A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN - FRIDAY 7 MAY 2021 WELCOME TO DAY THREE OF THE 2021 BOODLES MAY FESTIVAL – CHESTER CUP DAY It gives me great pleasure to welcome you back to Chester Racecourse for the final day of the Boodles May Festival, a day in which the highest profile race of season is run. Once again, it was a joy to see Owners and Trainers back at Chester Racecourse yesterday for our first Ladies Day fixture of the year. We are indebted to the support that we receive from professionals within the racing industry and the Owners and Trainers who choose to run their horses at Chester. We look forward to welcoming you back to Chester Racecourse again this season. The Boodles May Festival is an incredibly important and popular date in the racing calendar and would traditionally attract crowds of around 20,000 on each of the three days. It is of course unfortunate that we are not yet in a position where we can welcome back full crowds, but we are all counting down the days to when spectators can once again be welcomed. Today we look forward to the running of another seven races, including our highest-profile race of the year, The Tote Chester Cup. The Tote Chester Cup, the most valuable race in Chester’s calendar of fixtures and arguably the most exciting, has produced some fantastic battles on the Roodee Turf. In 2019, Making Miracles lived up to his name on Chester Cup Day, delivering course specialist Franny Norton and trainer Mark Johnston a first Chester Cup win. Supported by the Huxley Stakes and The Tote Chester Plate, a consolation race to the Tote Chester Cup; Tote Chester Cup Day would normally command the largest crowd of the three days and a fantastic rousing atmosphere that would filter through the city. May I thank today’s sponsors; Nicholas Wainwright and the team at Boodles, continuing their title sponsorship of the festival for an eight term and Tote who begin their sponsorship of the Chester Cup. Additional thanks go to our race sponsors: Tote, Melodi Media, Boodles, Retraining of Racehorses and Racing Welfare Supporting Racing’s Workforce – your support is greatly appreciated. As ever, we have been working hard to bring new developments to the racecourse and today we unveil a new enclosure, the Champagne Garden. Brand new for the 2021 season, the Champagne Garden is the perfect spot to get close to the action with prime views over the Paddock and Parade Ring. May I remind you that we are still operating under strict COVID-19 guidance and ask that you read the Owners Code of Conduct on pages 4 & 5 to ensure a safe day for all at Chester Racecourse. I wish you all an enjoyable and memorable day’s racing and a safe journey home. We look forward to seeing you at Chester Racecourse again later in the year.
Ian O’Doherty Chairman 1

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

BOODLES MAY FESTIVAL – CHESTER CUP DAY HISTORY THE FINAL DAY OF THE PRESTIGIOUS BOODLES MAY FESTIVAL SEES THE HIGHEST PROFILE AND MOST VALUABLE RACE OF OUR SEASON TAKE PLACE, THE HISTORIC TOTE+ CHESTER CUP. IT IS SUPPORTED BY ITS CONSOLATION RACE, THE CHESTER PLATE, AND THE CARD ALSO FEATURES THE GROUP 2 HUXLEY STAKES. The Chester Cup started its life as the Tradesmen’s Plate back in 1824 when it was first run. Originally, the Stand Cup was the feature race of Chester’s May meeting, when this was the only fixture held each year on the Roodee. However, the Tradesmen’s Plate (then the Tradesmen’s Cup) quickly became the feature race of the meeting in the mid-1800’s before its name was changed to the Chester Cup in 1892. As the longest race run at Chester with the biggest field each year, the Chester Cup is the highlight of the year at the course and one of the major handicaps of the British racing calendar. Nine horses have famously won the race twice, with dual winners including the likes of Rainbow High, Top Cees, Anak Pekan and the Champion Hurdler Sea Pigeon. The last two editions of the race have provided winning connections with particularly memorable victories, as 2018 saw Magic Circle storm clear to make it a fourth Chester Cup win for Dr Marwan Koukash, ten years after the owner’s first success which also came with trainer Ian Williams. This was followed by a first win in the race for course specialist jockey Franny Norton and trainer Mark Johnston, who teamed up for an emphatic win with Making Miracles.
MAGIC CIRCLE, 2018 CHESTER CUP
Earlier on the card, our Group 2 Huxley Stakes is named after the small village located on the outskirts of Chester and the origins of the Tradesman’s Cup go back to 1824 when the Chester Cup was originally run under this name. Despite the Huxley Stakes only first being run in 1999, it has already established a top-class roll of honour which led to the race being upgraded to Group 2 status for the first-time in 2018. The most successful horse in the Huxley Stakes is Maraahel who completed a remarkable hat-trick of wins in the race between the year of 2005 and 2007 for Sir Michael Stoute, before only missing out on a fourth victory by a neck in 2008.
NOBLE MISSION, 2014 HUXLEY STAKES
Other leading performers to have won the Huxley Stakes include John Gosden’s Debussy who was an impressive winner of the race in 2010 and it served as a springboard to further success as the four-year-old won the Grade 1 Arlington Million before finishing a close third in the Champion Stakes at Newmarket. The 2014 edition saw Frankel’s brother Noble Mission make just about all under a fine front-running ride from James Doyle, ahead of a field that included the 2013 Huxley winner Danadana and Sir Michael Stoute’s Telescope. Noble Mission finished off an excellent campaign with success in the Champion Stakes at Ascot in October beating a quality international field; a clear indication of the class of runners this race attracts to the Boodles May Festival meeting. 11

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a seven furlongs about 127 yards handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 86 to 105. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

HORSE WELFARE At all of our race meetings, there are three equine vets on duty. They are equipped and positioned to give immediate care to a horse should it require it. This may involve screens being erected around a horse to give the veterinary team privacy to administer treatment and does not necessarily mean the worst. The same applies with doctors and jockeys. 15

Unlike in a handicap when a horse’s official rating reflects the weight that they must carry, in a Group 2 all runners carry the same weight regardless of any previous form. In this case colts and geldings carry 9st 1lb and fillies 8st 12lb, although penalties are then awarded to horses that have already won above a certain level - 3lb for a Group 2 victory or 5lb for a Group 1 success.

2m 2f 140y
For four yrs old and upwards Total race value £125000 Owners Prize Money. 1st £50788, 2nd £25400, 3rd £12700, 4th £6350, 5th £3175, 6th £1588. (Penalty Value £64425) Weights raised 4lb and paragraphs 27 to 31 of the Weights and Handicapping Code complied with where applicable. 26 Eliminated Under Rules (I)9 and (I)10. RACE DESCRIPTION This race is a two miles, two furlongs about 140 yards handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from within a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Despite having no rating restrictions attached to it the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tend to make open handicaps very competitive races.

PLAY SMARTER
The suggestion in what looks a particularly open renewal is GLENCADAM GLORY who is well treated on his Ebor second last year and his prominent-running style is often seen to good effect around here. Not So Sleepy is another likely to be ridden on the pace if getting out sharply from stall 13 and he rates a threat. Cardano and Who Dares Wins, who has twice been placed in this, are also shortlisted.

THE RETRAINING OF RACEHORSES HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 2)
1m 2f 70y
For four yrs old and upwards Total race value £20000 Owners Prize Money. 1st £8126, 2nd £4064, 3rd £2032, 4th £1016, 5th £508, 6th £254. (Penalty Value £10308) RACE DESCRIPTION This is a one mile, two furlongs about 70 yards handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 86 to 105. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 105 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 100.

A cracking Chester Plate in which ELYSIAN FLAME is hard to side against given he saddles just a 3lb penalty for his useful win in a strong 2m Newbury handicap and promises better to come over this marathon trip. Roger Varian’s lightly-raced Postileo is a likely improver too at this distance and feared most, although recent scorers Brasca and Hydroplane need a second look.

For four yrs old and upwards Total race value £10749 Owners Prize Money. 1st £4063, 2nd £2032, 3rd £1016, 4th £508, 5th £254, 6th £246, 7th £240, 8th £240. (Penalty Value £5154) RACE DESCRIPTION This is a one mile, four furlongs about 63 yards handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty, which is based on the age of the horse in this race.
