WELCOME

TO

THE CURRAGH Where Champions Are Made Welcome to the Curragh for Keeneland Phoenix Stakes Day While we are sorry that we can’t welcome our supporters to the Curragh, we are pleased that you will all be able to engage with the Curragh in so many different ways. We are very pleased with the response to our new digital race card which allows people to get some of the race day experience in their own homes. This afternoon’s feature race is the Keenland Phoenix Stakes and I would like to thank Bill Thomason the current President and CEO of Keeneland, incoming President and CEO of Keeneland Shannon Bishop Arvin, Geoffrey Russell, Ed Prosser and all the Keenland team for their continued support of The Curragh. This is a very special race with a fine list of previous winners. Last year we had a great winner in Siskin and this year looks like being another great renewal. Today we also welcome Rathasker Stud as sponsors and say thank you to Maurice Burns, his daughter Madeline and all the team at Rathasker Stud for their generous support. I’m delighted that they got such a good line up for the Rathasker Stud Phoenix Sprint Stakes. I hope that this is the start of a long and very positive relationship. I would like to thank the Guinness/Diageo, Irish European Breeders Fund, Sheehy Motors and TRM for their generous sponsorship this afternoon. Sponsors make a very valuable contribution to racing and we are very fortunate to have great sponsors supporting us today. These are challenging times for all of us and we are very grateful to you all for your generous support of the Curragh. I would particularly like to thank the owners with runners here today. The owners make an invaluable contribution to racing, we are very grateful to you for your support and look forward to having you back in the Curragh again soon. We also miss our members and all our loyal customers who create great atmosphere in the Curragh, and we look forward to welcoming them all back as soon as it is safe to do so. This has been a very difficult time for everybody as we work our way through Covid-19. On behalf of the Board and all my colleagues at the Curragh, I would like to say a very big thank you to our frontline workers who have done such a wonderful job in getting us all through this. Thankfully, we appear to be dealing with this challenge well as a country and this could not have happened without the efforts of these heroes. I hope that you and your family are well and please stay safe and I look forward to welcoming you back to the Curragh before too long. PAT KEOGH Chief Executive

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. 6

RACE ONE

CURRAGH COMMENT Aidan O’Brien has a strong hand and it would be no surprise to see improvement from Baton Rouge and Iowa on their second outings, while the eye-catching debutant Tignanello is a Galileo colt out of an US Grade 1 winner. Noble Seal hasn’t been disgraced in two appearances over this trip at Leopardstown and is now tried in cheekpieces. However, preference is for COLOUR SERGEANT, who has made the podium on both sightings so far and it wouldn’t take much to see Ger Lyons’ youngster better his recent course-and-distance third.

CURRAGH COMMENT DACESA made a winning debut at Naas in June and she was far from disgraced when fourth in a competitive contest at Down Royal last time. The daughter of Tamayuz should appreciate this step up in trip and an opening mark of 80 appears to be workable. Tar Heel only found the useful Swiss Ace too good two starts ago and he should not been written off, while Procellarum is the pick of the remainder.

KEENELAND PHOENIX STAKES THIS YEAR’S KEY CONTENDERS

ADMIRAL NELSON (GB)

HH

KINGMAN (GB) - SHAMANDAR (FR) Trained by AIDAN O’BRIEN A winner on debut at this track, he’s failed to make his mark in Group 2 events at Ascot and Goodwood the last twice. He has a lot to do in this higher grade and a step up in trip in the coming weeks wouldn’t be a surprise.

GIORGIO VASARI

HHH

AIR FORCE BLUE (USA) - DREAM THE BLUES Trained by AIDAN O’BRIEN He may have took three goes to get off the mark, that win coming at Limerick, but he’s smartly bred and showed his class when easily dismissing 13 rivals at Naas last time out. He has more to find against rivals with Group experience in this race.

LAWS OF INDICES

HHHH

POWER (GB) - SAMPERS Trained by KEN CONDON This talented type showed his class and speed when winning at Navan back in June, and he backed that up when winning the Railway over course and distance last time out. This looks a natural step, and although he was a big price last time he’s dangerous to underestimate.

LUCKY VEGA

HHH

LOPE DE VEGA - QUEEN OF CARTHAGE (USA) Trained by JESSICA HARRINGTON This twice raced colt has plenty of scope to improve, but he has half a length to find with Laws Of Indices on their Railway clash. Nevertheless, he’s stabled with a good yard and there should be improvement lurking, but he’s vulnerable to one with more class.

ST MARK’S BASILICA (FR)

HHHH

SIYOUNI (FR) - CABARET Trained by AIDAN O’BRIEN Despite being sent off favourite for a maiden last time, he couldn’t reach the eventual winner. He was a touch green and should find more this time around and he has a superb pedigree as a half brother to Guineas winner Magna Grecia.

STEEL BULL

HHHH

CLODOVIL - MACARTHUR’S PARK Trained by MICHAEL O’CALLAGHAN A sublime win at Goodwood saw him change hands, and this colt looks all about speed. He demonstrated a fine turn of foot at Goodwood and the fact connections have supplemented for this shows how highly regarded he is. A massive player for a great team.

THE LIR JET

HHH

PRINCE OF LIR - PAPER DREAMS Trained by MICHAEL BELL A winner at Yarmouth on debut, he changed hands and repaid that when winning the Norfolk at Royal Ascot, beating a speedy Wesley Ward type. He raced on the outside at Chantilly and a different track position this time should see him in a better light, although he was only beaten a short head.

VENTURA TORMENTA

HHHH

ACCLAMATION - MIDNIGHT OASIS Trained by RICHARD HANNON A gutsy and likeable type who debuted in the Norfolk at Royal Ascot, finishing a fair sixth considering it was his first run. He turned the tables on softer ground last time but there’s no reason why today’s conditions won’t suit for a stable in great form.

ALOHA STAR

HHH

STARSPANGLEDBANNER - ZAIN ART Trained by FOZZY STACK This quick mare got off the mark at Bellewstown and stepped up in trip to win the Airlie Stud Stakes last time out. That experience will be extremely valuable, and although she was a big price when winning, she showed great speed and shouldn’t be underestimated today.

BUBBLES ON ICE

HH

STARSPANGLEDBANNER - MEDICEAN STAR Trained by FOZZY STACK She got off the mark at Killarney last time and steps back in trip for this, which might not be a positive. She’s bred to be quick but looked comfortable over a mile last time and has work to do on that bare form, although she made her racecourse debut over this course and distance. 16

LAST YEAR’S WINNER

An electric two-year-old, recently seen on the big stage at a mile, it was his performance in this last year that marked him as a superstar in waiting. Unbeaten in his three starts before lining up here, he showed a dazzling turn of foot to put the race to bed and a strong finish saw him run out the winner by three quarters of a length. Always a hotly contested affair which has been won by some stars of racing, who will graduate to the top level today?

THE VERDICT A great renewal of this race to see who will be crowned top two-year-old so far this season. St Mark’s Basilica is bound to improve from his racecourse debut and is a big player given his fantastic pedigree. The filly Aloha Star gets a handy weight allowance is a Group 2 winner so shouldn’t be underestimated, neither should Ventura Tormenta. Steel Bull was devastating at Goodwood and showed unmatchable speed, but a stronger test of stamina here could expose any vulnerabilities. Laws Of Indices put up a great performance over course and distance to win the Railway and winners of that have a great record in this race, highlighted by last year’s winner. He will be a big player, as will The Lir Jet for Michael Bell, but he looks a colt with great speed and some potential dig in the ground wouldn’t necessarily look to suit him. 17

CURRAGH COMMENT STEEL BULL overcame traffic problems to win the Molecomb at Goodwood in impressive fashion when being value for a bit further than the three-quarters of a length winning margin suggested. The step up to 6f is unlikely to pose any concerns and Michael O’Callaghan’s colt is taken to maintain his unbeaten record. The UK raiders Ventura Tormenta (first) and The Lir Jet (second), fought out the finish to the Prix Robert Papin at Chantilly last month but the latter could reverse that form with a more likely even pace on this occasion to suit.

CURRAGH COMMENT MILLISLE landed the Cheveley Park at Newmarket last season and was quickly brought back to sprinting after finishing in midfield in the 1000 Guineas. A solid fifth in the Commonwealth Cup and second in a Naas Group 3 signalled a return to form and she absolutely bolted up in the Ballyogan Stakes last time. Jessica Harrington’s filly can get the better of Speak In Colours here, as although the five-year-old was a commanding winner at Fairyhouse last time, he might find giving the selection 9lb too much. Sonaiyla and Glen Shiel are others to note.

CURRAGH COMMENT Boundless Power beat plenty of these when second past the post over C&D a couple of weeks ago but he was subsequently disqualified for drawing the incorrect weight. The son of Slade Power should go well once again but preference is for MUDAWY, who was fourth on that occasion. The son of Dark Angel was making his debut and was slowly away, but he caught the eye when finishing fast. With that experience now under his belt, the three-year-old could be very hard to beat this afternoon. Others to note are Call Of The Jungle, King Of Stars, I Am Thunder and Taggalo.

CURRAGH COMMENT Hell Left Loose won well at Naas last time and has to be considered, but TEDDY BOY was just over two lengths behind him there, despite meeting all sorts of trouble in running. Edward Lynam’s charge is 3lb better off here and would surely have gone close with a clear run last time, so can exact his revenge. Snow Patch ran well over track and trip latest and could figure.

WIN: TEDDY BOY

DANGER: HELL LEFT LOOSE

HORSE WELFARE - A PRIORITY At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority. THE ASSOCIATION OF IRISH RACECOURSE VETERINARY SURGEONS (AIRCVS)
