WELCOME
TO
THE CURRAGH Where Champions Are Made Welcome to the Curragh for our second August meeting. While we are sorry that we can’t welcome our supporters to the Curragh, we are pleased that you will all be able to engage with the Curragh in so many different ways. We are very pleased with the response to our new digital race card which allows people to get some of the race day experience in their own homes. This is a very special year for The Irish Field who celebrate their 150th anniversary. It is also a very special year for the Royal Whip Stakes which is celebrating its 200th renewal of the race. We are delighted that we are having a join celebration this afternoon with the Irish Field Celebrating Royal Whip Stakes. In 1821 King George IV presented the whip that became a perpetual trophy presented to the winning owner each year. In 1830, King William IV replaced the original whip with a beautiful gold one which is the magnificent trophy. We are delighted that H.E. Ambassador Robin Barnett will present the Royal Whip to the winning owner in the coming days. The Comer Group are great supporters of the Curragh and this afternoon we stage the Comer Group Irish St Leger Trial Stakes. The winner will receive an entry to the final classic of the year on Longines Irish Champions Weekend in September. We would like to thank the Comer Group for their continued support of the Curragh. I would like to thank all our other sponsors this afternoon, Big Picture Communications, Irish European Breeders Fund, Sir Edmund and Lady Sue Loder of Eyrefield Lodge Stud, Holden Plant Rental and TRM who continue to support our Stable Staff Appreciation Month Sponsors make a very valuable contribution to racing and we are very fortunate to have great sponsors supporting us today. These are challenging times for all of us and we are very grateful to you all for your generous support of the Curragh. I am pleased that we continue to honour the memory of Derek O’Sullivan. He left a wonderful legacy having been one of the founders of the Racing Academy and Centre of Education which is such an integral part of the our racing industry. I would particularly like to thank the owners with runners here today. The owners make an invaluable contribution to racing, we are very grateful to you for your support and look forward to having you back in the Curragh again soon. We also miss our members and all our loyal customers who create great atmosphere in the Curragh, and we look forward to welcoming them all back as soon as it is safe to do so. This has been a very difficult time for everybody as we work our way through Covid-19. On behalf of the Board and all my colleagues at the Curragh, I would like to say a very big thank you to our frontline workers who have done such a wonderful job in getting us all through this. Thankfully, we appear to be dealing with this challenge well as a country and this could not have happened without the efforts of these heroes. I hope that you and your family are well and please stay safe and I look forward to welcoming you back to the Curragh before too long. PAT KEOGH Chief Executive

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. 6

Eyrefield Lodge Stud Leading Thoroughbred breeding operation owned by Sir Edmund Loder.
Eyrefield Lodge has belonged to the Loder family for more than 100 years. Eustace Loder, great great-uncle of the present owner, bred Pretty Polly there and raced her to win 22 of her 24 races she was unbeaten in nine runs at 2, won the 1,000 Guineas, Oaks and St Leger of 1904 and the 1905 Coronation Cup. She is the ancestress of many great racehorses and has major races named after her at both the Curragh and Newmarket. Eyrefield Lodge Stud now occupies 160 acres between the Curragh and Kilcullen and has some 40 boxes. Marwell and Marling were both bred there; Marwell, winner of 10 of her 13 races including four Group 1 prizes, and her Group 1 - winning daughter Marling, also a four time Group 1 winner, are the best horses to carry Sir Edmund’s famous colours.

CURRAGH COMMENT There are a number of powerful stables with newcomers in this line-up and the betting market could prove a good guide as to what is expected of them. Connla is interesting with Shane Foley booked while Ubuntu represents a stable in fine form at present, but it might pay to side with the experience of TALACRE. A half-sister to the top-class Siskin, she is certainly bred to have plenty of ability and looks ready to win following solid placed efforts at both Bellewstown and Leopardstown.

HORSE WELFARE - A PRIORITY At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority. THE ASSOCIATION OF IRISH RACECOURSE VETERINARY SURGEONS (AIRCVS)

CURRAGH COMMENT FRENETIC didn’t have any excuses when beaten in Listed company at Naas earlier this month, but she has enough about her over 5f to win more races this season and this looks a shrewd bit of placing by Ger Lyons. She is 7lb ahead of likely danger Chief Little Hawk on the official ratings, and the latter hasn’t built on his debut Navan success in June. Blue Cabochon is slowly improving and might prove the each-way value in the race.

CURRAGH COMMENT MASTER OF REALITY was only fifth behind impressive winner Search For A Song in last year’s Irish St. Leger, but his form this year is more encouraging than that of Dermot Weld’s filly. Behind stable companion Twilight Payment over C&D the last twice, including when second in the Group 2 Curragh Cup latest, the son of Frankel can get back to winning ways with Twilight Payment not involved this time. Search For A Song was a little better over an inadequate trip in the Tattersalls Gold Cup last month and is noted, while Micro Manage is a fascinating contender despite his absence. Course winner Delphi is the pick of the three-year-olds going to post as he’s unbeaten in three starts this year and really appreciated going up in trip at Leopardstown last time.

ARMORY posted a strong effort when fourth in the Irish 2,000 Guineas and if he can reproduce that form over this longer trip he’ll take plenty of beating on these terms. This looks easier than his previous 1m2f assignment in the Tattersalls Gold Cup. If he fails to stay the distance then course-and-distance winner Leo De Fury could pick up the pieces. Sixth behind the selection in the aforementioned Classic, Sinawann is going the right way and is another interesting three-year-old to consider.

THE ROYAL WHIP The visit by King George IV to the Curragh in 1821 was an occasion of great excitement. £3,000 was raised to erect a new stand and marquees were installed for the masses. The King presented The Royal Whip, with a handle covered in finely wrought solid gold shamrocks to the Curragh, one of the finest trophies in racing. He said: ‘I intend this whip to be presented to the owner of the best horse in Ireland weight for age… and, as I wish to encourage the breed of strong horses in this country you will take care to make the weights very heavy and that no horse younger than four years shall be permitted to run for it’. A copy of the original whip was later presented by King William IV to the Irish Turf Club during his visit to the Curragh in 1830.

CURRAGH COMMENT This represents a huge drop in class for GOLD MAZE, who didn’t disgrace himself in either the Irish or English Derby and it will be disappointing if he gets beat. We know he handles the track and his only previous start over this trip, finishing runner-up in the Gallinule here in June, was arguably his best effort to date. He has yet to win, though, and there are a few respected in opposition. These include Avarice, Daylight Come and Karbasann, who all look fairly solid and should run well.
WIN: GOLD MAZE
DANGER: DAYLIGHT COME
THANK YOU The Curragh would like to thank Eva Maria Bucher–Haefner’s Moyglare Stud for generously sponsoring complimentary refreshments available to stable staff working today. 32
DEREK O’SULLIVAN AN APPRECIATION
This afternoons’s apprentice race is the thirteenth renewal of an event in memory of Derek O’Sullivan, founding Director of RACE from 1973 until his untimely passing in 2002 and it represents a fitting tribute to a man who devoted so much time and energy to the training and development of young people in the horse racing industry. Originally from Dublin, Derek served his time as an electrician and worked his way through college, completing a social science degree before first meeting Stan Cosgrove in 1971 and accepting the challenge of setting up a school for apprentice jockeys as a form of social project. RACE opened its doors in September 1973 and for the first few years Curragh House was a hostel for a small number of young apprentices, offering lodgings, educational and social supports. The original Trustees/ Committee included Stan Cosgrove, Joe McGrath (Turf Club Senior Steward), Michael Osborne (Irish National Stud), Tom Ryan, Tom Casey, Jim Marsh (stipendiary steward of the Turf Club) and Tom Brophy (local auctioneer in Newbridge). From such small acorns do giant oaks grow and the fledgling apprentice centre has evolved over more than 40 years into a broad-based academy offering professional training for jockeys, stable staff, trainers, breeders and farriers with a campus and facilities that are the envy of the racing world. Great appreciation is due to the Army Equitation School in the Curragh Camp who provided practical training facilities and support during all those formative years and to FÁS who structured and funded the initial training programmes from 1978 and to Kildare Wicklow ETB who still support the Trainee Jockey programme. Derek had a vision for RACE that extended far beyond Kildare town and his pioneering work led to an enduring friendship with Japan and the setting up of a training school in Hokkaido for the JRA. Ireland was put on the map as a centre of excellence for training racing staff and riders from around the globe and Derek was one of the founders of the European Association of Racing Schools (EARS). Derek always envisaged that RACE would be a catalyst for change in the Irish racing industry and he fought passionately for more investment in the professional training and education of young people and the welfare of stable staff. He understood that the all-round development of the person is what creates the foundation for a successful career and a fruitful life and his legacy is evident in the hundreds of RACE graduates who have made their mark in Ireland and around the world. SUPPORTING THE NEXT GENERATION Racing Academy & Centre of Education (RACE) is a national academy offering professional training and certified educational programmes for more than 700 people each year on its Kildare campus. The Trainee Jockey programme has achieved worldwide recognition and produced an outstanding list of successful graduates over the past thirty-nine years. RACE provides young people with the foundation for long-term success in a racing career. For more information on career and educational opportunities for young people, Junior Academy activities, exercise rider programmes, Open Days and school tours, see www.racingacademy.ie or follow RACE on Facebook or Instagram.

CURRAGH COMMENT DARK MAGIC has won two of his last three for Johnny Levins and he is expected to remain very competitive despite being forced up in grade. The six-year-old only just does enough, and should be suited by another likely strongly-run race here. Out On Friday battled well to land a bit of a gamble at Galway last month and has to be taken seriously despite a 12lb rise, while Intervention and Legal Thriller are others to consider.

CURRAGH COMMENT Morrone is worth a market check now going handicapping off an opening mark of 52 for Edward Lynam, who excels with his sprinters, but BAHLWAN appears the most likely winner and looks the one to be on. Denis Hogan’s five-year-old had the Lynam-trained Teddy Boy back in fourth when scoring over course and distance last time and is expected to take an 8lb rise in his stride to remain competitive.
