WELCOME

TO

THE CURRAGH Where Champions Are Made Welcome to the Curragh for our fourth August meeting. While we are sorry that we can’t welcome our supporters to the Curragh, we are pleased that you will all be able to engage with the Curragh in so many different ways. We are very pleased with the response to our new digital race card which allows people to get some of the race day experience in their own homes. We are delighted to welcome Scott Heider and his family as sponsors for the first time, but sorry that they will be unable to travel to Ireland for the race day. Scott has enjoyed great success on the track this year most notably with Crossfirehurricane and Pista. I would also like to thank Mrs Cristina Patino for her continued support of the Snow Fairy Stakes, which honours her champion race mare whose victory in the Irish Oaks lives long in the memory as one of the highlights of racing here. Miss Pat O’Kelly has also been a tremendous supporter of The Curragh and her position as one of the leading breeders in Europe was further highlighted with the win of Lucky Vega, who recently won the Keeneland Phoenix Stakes. We are delighted that her great mare Flame Of Tara is commemorated today I would also like to acknowledge the support today of our betting partner Paddy Power, together with TRM and Irish European Breeders Fund. Walls to Workstations are a first time sponsor today and we are delighted to have them on board They are a very successful Irish-based company who are associated with some of the leading businesses in Ireland. Sponsors make a very valuable contribution to racing and we are very fortunate to have great sponsors supporting us today. These are challenging times for all of us and we are very grateful to you all for your generous support of the Curragh. I would particularly like to thank the owners with runners here today. The owners make an invaluable contribution to racing, we are very grateful to you for your support and look forward to having you back in the Curragh again soon. We also miss our members and all our loyal customers who create great atmosphere in the Curragh, and we look forward to welcoming them all back as soon as it is safe to do so. We are now only two weeks away from Longines Irish Champions Weekend and although the event will take place behind closed doors there will be a variety of ways to engage with the weekend from home including extensive media coverage. I hope that you and your family are well and please stay safe and I look forward to welcoming you back to the Curragh before too long. PAT KEOGH Chief Executive

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. 6

CURRAGH COMMENT Flying Visit proved that he handles soft ground when a fast-finishing third over course and distance last week and a gruelling race in testing conditions may give him an edge, while Colour Sergeant is unproven on this type of sort of surface but hasn’t done too much wrong in three starts to date. However, Aidan O’Brien’s remarkable record in the race, winning seven of the last nine renewals, makes BRAZIL the preferred choice. He has shaped encouragingly in both starts thus far and can make it third-time lucky for the master trainer.

CURRAGH COMMENT Emaniya had Ahandfulofsummers (third) and Divinely (fourth) behind when getting off the mark at Cork and all three appear to be heading in the right direction, while Dolce Notte caught the eye when second on debut at Killarney and is worth her place at this level. Nicest opened her account at the first attempt and the American Pharoah filly is a must for the shortlist, but preference is for MEALA, who is the pick of Jim Bolger’s pair. The Epaulette youngster backed up her impressive Galway victory with a fine effort in the Debutante here last week and the step up in trip could bring about further improvement.

SNOW FAIRY

Snow Fairy

The legendary daughter of Intikhab, who was bought back by her breeder for just â‚Ź1,800 at Tattersalls Ireland in December 2008, won eight of her 21 starts, with six of her victories coming at the highest level. She retired with earnings just short of ÂŁ4 million. Trained in Newmarket by Ed Dunlop, Snow Fairy broke her maiden over six furlongs as a two-year-old and was supplemented for the 2010 Oaks after winning the Listed Height Of Fashion Stakes at Goodwood. Following her victory at Epsom, she ran in another 13 Group/Grade 1 races, adding the Darley Irish Oaks to her tally along with globe-trotting success in the Queen Elizabeth II Commemorative Cup in Japan two years in a row, as well as victory in the Hong Kong Cup and the Irish Champion Stakes. Her three-year-old filly Virgin Snow is a winner this year and has placed at Group 3 level. She has a beautiful two-year-old colt by Frankel, named John Leeper in memory of John Dunlop, who is in training with Ed Dunlop and she is currently in foal to Sea The Stars.

CURRAGH COMMENT ALBIGNA was a warm order for the Irish 1,000 Guineas following a strong juvenile campaign which saw her score at the highest level in the Prix Marcel Boussac. She was a disappointing sixth to Peaceful in the Classic but has reportedly been working well ahead of her comeback, where softer conditions might aid her cause. Lovelier (second) and Kiss For A Jewel (third) were closely matched in a Group 2 at the track last month and are expected to be in the mix along with So Wonderful, who has turned a corner by winning her last two starts.

CURRAGH COMMENT FLAMING MOON had shaped for a while as though stepping up in trip would suit him and that impression was confirmed when the three-year-old struck over C&D earlier this month. An 8lb rise makes life tougher, but time is on his side and he should get a nice pace to aim at. Njord was an unlucky loser twice during the Galway Festival and is fancied to go well again, while Laughifuwant should be sharper for his reappearance at Ballybrit.

THE CURRAGH TRAINING GROUNDS The Curragh Training Grounds has long been regarded as one of the best training grounds in the world and has been home to generations of Classic, Group and Graded winners. Set on approximately 1,500 acres in the heart of Kildare the Curragh Training Grounds has a variety of gallops to meet every requirement. Thanks to the generous support of Eva Maria Bucher-Haefner, a major refurbishment project is near completion. The range of gallops provides trainers with great scope to tailor each horse’s work to suit their individual needs, with gallops varying in length, gradient and surface. The natural turf gallops which have been nurtured for centuries in a unique environment are complemented by a range of artificial surfaces which can be used for all types of work during all seasons. With over 50 trainers currently on the Curragh, owners or prospective owners have a variety of yards to choose from in order to utilise the amazing facilities available. Any horse in training on the Curragh has access to the same facilities as champions such as Sea the Stars, Sinndar, Harzand or recent classic winner Search for a Song. The Old Vic and Free Eagle Gallops The Old Vic, originally commissioned by his Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and named after his 1989 Irish Derby winner, runs in front of the racecourse stands and climbs steadily for a mile and a furlong. It is the Curraghs flagship gallop for fast work and is used in the preparation for the big race day. The Free Eagle is a new 9-furlong sand and fibre gallop made possible due to the generous support of Eva Maria Bucher-Haefner and is a huge addition to the training grounds. The uphill gallop that runs alongside the Old Vic is named after Moyglare Studs Group 1 winner Free Eagle who himself used the Curragh facilities every day of his racing career. This gallop has all the attributes of the Old Vic but provides an alternative option for trainers to exercise a horse on a slower sand and fibre surface instead of woodchip.

32

S Maddenstown and the Little Curragh Maddenstown and the Little Curragh provide the boundaries on either side of the Curragh. Both facilities are steeped in history and have been home to countless Group 1 winners over the years. Maddenstown has its own 7-furlong grass gallop as well and a 7-furlong wood chip gallop. These have now been complemented by an 11-furlong sand and fibre gallop which will be huge addition to trainers that side of the Curragh. In recent times Group 1 winners such as Chelsea Rose and Saoire were trained in Maddenstown as well as speedsters such as Dandy Man, Arctic and Hit the Bid. The Little Curragh was home to one of the best racehorses we have ever seen in Sea the Stars and more recently the consistent Group 1 performer Romanised. The little Curragh offers a 7-furlong round woodchip gallop with a shoot as well as a 5 ½-furlong sand and fibre straight gallop. The Round Sand and Schooling To ensure that National Hunt trainers are well catered for, the training grounds have an all-weather schooling strip as well as extensive schooling options over both hurdles and fences on grass. The Round Sand is a 9 Furlong round circuit used for cantering flat and national hunt horses. The Round Sand provides the strongest test of the all-weather gallops available on the Curragh and therefore is widely used for fast work by national hunt trainers. Year in, year out the Curragh produces a number of top-class national hunt performers. The roll of honour is endless but includes champions such as Hardy Eustace, Our Conor, Like a Butterfly, Papillion, Comanche Court, Numbersixvalverde and most recently Cheltenham festival winner City Island.

Heider Family Stables The Curragh would like to acknowledge the generous support of Scott Heider and his family today and celebrate the first running of the Heider Family Stables Round Tower Stakes. Scott Heider and his family has been involved with racing in Ireland for 5 years now. The history of the Irish horse is what initially drew them in and caused them to expand their racing operation from The States to Ireland. Scott Heider commented “It’s just been a fantastic experience for us. We love our partnership with Joseph O’Brien and we’ve been very fortunate to race sometalented individuals on Irish racecourses the last few years including “Crossfirehurricane”, “A New Dawn”, “Take A Deep Breath” and our latest winner, an American Pharoah filly named “Pista”.” Horse Racing Ireland has been a pleasure to work with as they always seem to go out of there way to make sure our experience is quite special.” “I began racing and breeding thoroughbreds with my father 25 years ago in The States. We’ve enjoyed some terrific times and been blessed with a number of high caliber horses including 2019 Grade I winner “Mia Mischief”. But there’s something extra special about racing in Ireland with it’s incredible history. I’ve enjoyed reading everything I can get my hands on the last few years starting with several biographies about the iconic Vincent O’Brien. I have to admit I’ve developed an appreciation I thought I’d never have for horse’s over the jumps! It’s safe to say, we’re here to stay racing in Ireland.”

CURRAGH COMMENT CHIEF LITTLE HAWK has been very active in his juvenile campaign and sets the form standard on his efforts when fourth in the Molecomb, runner-up in a 5f Listed race here and when landing a sales race at Naas latest. His stablemate Giorgio Vasari is similarly exposed but ran below par when behind him last time, so exciting improver Coill Avon and Teresa Mendoza, who made a winning debut over track and trip last month, could emerge as bigger dangers.

CURRAGH COMMENT Arcanears had Sendmylovetoyou (fourth), Blairmayne (fifth), Celtic Manor (ninth) and Master Matt (11th) behind when third at Naas last time and could be capable of confirming that form, though he was less impressive when down the field, albeit in a blanket finish, at Dundalk last time. Tresorier was ahead of Arcanears on the all-weather there and could be a factor in this, but preference is for MIACOMET. Jack Davison’s sprinter was not far away when second here last time and appears happiest in soft ground, so should get her conditions in this.

CURRAGH COMMENT Shambara has steadily been edging closer to the target with each start thus far and warrants respect on her 7f debut, while Cursory Exam’s form behind Hudson River two starts ago stands out and he was by no means disgraced at Galway last time. Omakase has yet to run a bad race and shouldn’t be too far away, but the vote goes to STAR IMAGE. This progressive daughter of Sea The Stars ran well on soft ground at Galway latest and, partnered by top apprentice Gavin Ryan on her handicap debut, she is fancied to go close.

HORSE WELFARE - A PRIORITY At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority. THE ASSOCIATION OF IRISH RACECOURSE VETERINARY SURGEONS (AIRCVS)

CURRAGH COMMENT MYRCELLA opened her account at Killarney last week on the back of some fine efforts in defeat this summer and the consistent filly is backed to thrive once again now dropped back to 7f off a 7lb higher mark. Caesar’s Comet was sent off favourite when finishing not far behind the selection when they met at Leopardstown earlier this month and has to be respected, along with Ramiro, who has been knocking on the door this summer. Trueba was a winner here on his penultimate outing and wasn’t disgraced off this rating last weekend, with handicap debutant Puddle Of Luck also of interest following an encouraging third at Tipperary.

WIN: MYRCELLA

DANGER: RAMIRO

TRM RACE SERIES TRM have partnered with The Curragh throughout August to promote Stable Staff Appreciation Month. This initiative includes the sponsorship of 4 races by TRM. The leading trainer following all four races will win a prize to benefit their staff.
