WELCOME TO DAY 2 OF LONGINES IRISH CHAMPIONS WEEKEND I extend a warm welcome to everyone watching in for the second day of Longines Irish Champions Weekend at the Curragh this afternoon. While the very best of racing is taking place this weekend, a vital ingredient is missing, one that makes a day’s racing in Ireland such a special occasion. The absence of owners, racecourse members, sponsors and racegoers alike has been keenly felt since racing resumed after a 10-week break in early June. This is particularly the case on big and important racing occasions such as Longines Irish Champions Weekend. It is truly disheartening that we will be running four Group 1 races, including the final Classic of the season, in front of an empty stand this afternoon. However that is what we must do in the current circumstances and many other sectors are suffering just as much, if not more. Since June 8th, every race meeting in Ireland has been run behind-closeddoors, meaning that only those working at a fixture may attend. We have implemented detailed safety procedures which have been well adhered to by trainers, riders, officials and stable staff. It is important that those in attendance at Irish race meetings keep following the protocols in place as they are the basis on which we are permitted to race. When the time is right and restrictions on gatherings of people at an outdoor event begin to ease, owners will be our first priority for a return to the racecourse. It will mean so much to get owners back to the racecourse to watch their horses compete. We are conscious too of a great number of people within our industry that have lost work over the past months in particular bookmakers, Tote staff, caterers and a multitude of other racecourse service providers. I look forward to the day that each and every one of you are back on the racecourse, contributing once again to an industry that we can be proud of. Finally, I would just like to sympathise with all families who have lost loved ones in this awful Pandemic and salute the medical staff and frontline workers who have worked selflessly and heroically so that the rest of the population may be safe and well. Míle Buíochas.

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. 9

CURRAGH COMMENT Romantic Proposal collared Gulliver on the line to take the Scurry spoils here and although she was a couple of places behind Downforce when fourth in Listed company subsequently, she is 9lb better off. Half Nutz is progressing well, while Treacherous spearheads the British challenge, but BARANIYA probably has the most potential. Dermot Weld’s filly handled the rise to Listed level when third over 7f at Naas and is fancied to improve again from the drop to a sprint.

IN THIS RACE LAST YEAR The Bold Lad always holds form very well, and the race we witnessed last year was no different. Ger Lyons’ Buffer Zone came out on top under a fine ride by Colin Keane, with subsequent multiple Listed winner and big improver Make A Challenge a length and three quarters back in second. The form gains a further strong look through the UK raider Gulliver, who was back in third, with the legendary Gordon Lord Byron, sadly no longer with us, and Curragh regular Blairmayne back in fourth and fifth respectively. Buffer Zone went to Ayr for the Gold Cup following this race last year but couldn’t get involved, however he’s shown his class with fine performances in Listed and Group races since the resumption of racing, notably beaten only half a length into third in the Group 2 Weatherbys Ireland Greenlands Stakes.

BOLD LAD The first race today honours the great Bold Lad. Trained by Paddy Prendergast, Bold Lad began his career in 1966 by winning the Youngsters Stakes in Ireland and was then sent to Royal Ascot to contest the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot in which he defeated a field which included Royal Palace. He won the Champagne Stakes at Doncaster defeating the previously unbeaten Ribocco, after which Prendergast described him as the best two-year-old he had ever trained, including Windy City. In September he won the Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket. In the Free Handicap, a ranking of the season’s best juveniles, he was rated three pounds clear of runner-up Royal Palace giving him Champion honors in Ireland and England. Bold Lad began his three-year-old campaign with a win in the Tetrarch Stakes at The Curragh in Ireland. Sent to England, he was the 100/30 joint-favorite with Royal Palace going in to the Classic 2,000 Guineas Stakes at Newmarket. He finished unplaced behind Royal Palace and Taj Dewan, having been denied a clear run in the closing stages. Bold Lad then started favourite for the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury but was beaten three-quarters of a length by the Irish-trained four-year-old Bluerullah. In the last race of his career, ran third to Reform in Ascot’s St. James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot. Retired to stud at a fee of 400 guineas, Bold Lad made a “spectacular” start to his breeding career, siring the 1000 Guineas winner Waterloo in his first crop of foals. He also sired the leading sprinters Boldboy and Never So Bold, the Richmond Stakes winner Persian Bold (sire of Kooyonga) and Ballad Rock, the sire of Chief Singer.

LEGENDS OF THE CURRAGH We live in the era of Aidan O’Brien’s domination, with the master of Ballydoyle continuing his winning streak in Ireland and the UK’s biggest races. His legacy in racing history is secure, so let’s take a look back on some other legends of the Curragh.
MORNY WING
A British and Irish Champion Flat Jockey, Morny relocated to Ireland after World War I and enjoyed a fine time of things, picking up multiple Championships and riding record numbers of winners in the Classics, records which still stand to this day. Seven wins in the Irish 1,000 Guineas and Irish St Leger and six in the Irish Derby highlighted a superb riding career that spanned from 1914 to 1949.
PAT EDDERY
11-time British Champion Jockey, Pat was born a stone’s throw from the Curragh, where he rode many a winner for Vincent O’Brien. His association with Sadler’s Wells, Danehill, El Gran Senor and Dancing Brave forms part of his great racing legacy, with the name P. Eddery inscribed on the most historic aspects of thoroughbred history. Pat rode during the golden years of racing, when the likes of Rainbow Quest, El Gran Senor and Sadler’s Wells all clashed, with his ride on Gundry in the 1975 King George VI Stakes famed as one of racing’s biggest spectacles, a race he won on Dancing Brave in 1985, beating Irish Derby winner Shahrastani.
VINNIE ROE
It takes a special horse to win four Irish St Leger’s, a feat which Vinnie Roe completed in remarkable succession. Trained by Dermot Weld, the star son of Definite Article was a stayer for a generation, winning the Irish St Leger from 2001 to 2004, with Pat Smullen on his back and sporting his easily recognisable sheepskin noseband. A horse who always gave his all and was an ever present for an era, he will be remembered as one of the best stayers to grace the Curragh.
26
MICK KINANE
County Tipperary man Mick won the Irish Champion Jockey title on 13 occasions, riding for Dermot Weld, as retained rider to Ballydoyle and latterly for John Oxx. A multiple big race winning ride in the UK too, his finest hour came with his association with the legendary Sea The Stars, on whom he won his third Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. He rode three winners of the Irish Guineas’, two winners of the Irish Derby and Oaks and landed back-to-back renewals of the Irish St Leger onboard Vintage Crop in 1993 and 1994. An elite jockey, Mick won everything there is to win in racing and his 34-year career will stand the test of time as one of the best jockeys in history.
JOHN OXX
A multi-generational winning trainer, John trains on the Curragh, making use of the facilities to land many superb Group wins. His training marvel is demonstrated acutely by Sea The Stars, whom he trained to perfection to be one of the stars of recent years. Sinndar landed the Epsom and Irish Derby’s for the great man, with Azamour another fine horse who excelled under Oxx’s watchful eye. His patient, expert handling of top level talent means John will always be regarded as one of the best trainers to grace the world of racing.

RACE TWO
Dermot Weld has won five of the last six renewals of this and relies on Amma Grace and Zawara, who accounted for the Derby third when opening her account at Naas. However, ONE VOICE has performed with credit behind Classic winners Love and Fancy Blue the last twice and could now get her moment in the spotlight. Stablemate Cayenne Pepper is respected dropping back in trip, while Roger Varian’s raider Gold Wand impressed at York and appears to be on the up. Lemista arrives unbeaten in four and has to be taken seriously, with Snow Fairy Stakes winner Thundering Nights and the globetrotting Magic Wand adding further substance to a quality line-up.
WIN: ONE VOICE
DANGER: MAGIC WAND
IN THIS RACE LAST YEAR The simple fact of this race is that Dermot Weld wins it. The legendary trainer made it four consecutive victories in this with the win of Tarnawa last year, ridden beautifully by Chris Hayes. Always prominent, Tarnawa demonstrated her superior class to clear away from the Aidan O’Brien-trained pair of Goddess and Credenza back in second and third. Still a relatively lightly-raced mare, she couldn’t make an impact on British Champions Day but has returned in fine form in her one start this season, winning the Give Thanks at Cork, beating a fine filly of Jessica Harrington’s. She looks a filly on the upgrade for a trainer who excels with these types, and make sure to watch for who Dermot Weld runs in today’s race.

REMEMBERING NIJINSKY 50 YEARS ON FROM HIS TRIPLE CROWN VICTORY Legends of the thoroughbred racing world are few and far between, but there are exceptional horses than live on through their achievements. Nijinsky is one such name. The first Triple Crown winner for 35 years, he progressed from an incredible two-year-old season to become only the fifteenth winner of the prestigious trio of races. Born in Ontario, Canada, the bay came from the second covering of mares by Northern Dancer, arguably the most influential sire of the 20th century. Nijinsky’s pedigree was fitting of his racecourse success, his dam won Canada’s oldest race, the Queen’s Plate, in 1962, although she only produced two other foals. The first, a mare called Fleur, foaled Derby winner The Minstrel, with the second named Minsky, a classy two-year-old. Vincent O’Brien masterminded the purchase of Nijinsky and was trained by the great handler at Ballydoyle. Although his famed success came in the UK, Nijinsky first caught the eye at the Curragh, where his first four runs took place. A maiden win was followed up by victories in the Anglesey and the Railway Stakes, before he stepped up to a mile to win the Beresford Stakes, beating the subsequent Irish 2,000 Guineas winner. His first run in England came at the end of his two-year-old career, where he routed the field in the Dewhurst to take his place as the most exciting juvenile prospect in training. An opener for his tilt at the Guineas came over seven furlongs back at the Curragh, before the English 2,000 Guineas was at his mercy, a race he won easily under a stylish ride from Lester Piggott. Although the Derby was a tougher race on paper, the victory was relentless. Never challenged, Piggott and Nijinsky demolished a classy field, in a style rarely seen in one of the most competitive Classics. Nijinsky returned to the Curragh for the Irish Derby, where he added yet another prestigious success to his CV, winning by three lengths. He faced older rivals for the first time at Ascot in the King George VI, where he hammered a host of top-class middle-distance horses to win decisively. The St Leger beckoned, but ringworm struck, and it took all of O’Brien’s patience to get his horse back to full strength. Although he only won by a length, the margin of victory doesn’t reflect his utter superiority in landing the most prestigious thoroughbred achievement available - a feat which is yet to be matched to this day.

THE DERRINSTOWN STUD FLYING FIVE STAKES A fast and furious sprint over the minimum distance, and our first Group 1 here today. A recent addition to the Group 1 list, this race can count Sole Power, Caravaggio and Havana Grey among its previous winners. The man who took the first renewal also holds the record for most winners in this race. Dermot Weld’s five victories take him two ahead of his closest pursuers, and Rosewell has turned out some good winners of this recently. Flowing won back-to-back renewals in 1991 and 1992, with Tropical repeating the double in 1993 and 1994. Sole Power was a stalwart of the sprinting scene for many years, and won this race in 2015, beating Maarek by a head. The two eight-year-olds battled it out in a head finish, with another veteran, Take Cover, back in third. Bullet sprinter Caravaggio won this two years ago in the hands of Ryan Moore. The victory took the son of Scat Daddy’s record to 3-3 here at the Curragh, and paved his way to a stallion career. Sole Power
Caravaggio
A fellow dashing grey would follow up a year later in the form of Havana Grey. Trained by Karl Burke, the son of Havana Gold became the second consecutive three-year-old to win the race, with Fairyland making it three on the bounce last year for Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore. The pair defied a wide trip to land the race by a short head from stablemate So Perfect.

LAST YEAR’S WINNER
A great field assembled for this last year, with the likes of Australian raider Houtzen, fine filly Mabs Cross and the improving favourite - Soffia. However, it was a case of stick to what you know as Aidan O’Brien led home the first two, with Fairyland delivering on her juvenile promise to see off stablemate So Perfect by a short head, in a thrilling duel between Ryan Moore and Donnacha O’Brien. With the fillies coming to the fore, it was left to James Tate’s Invincible Army to trail home a length and a half back in third, with fellow UK raider Soldier’s Call back in fourth. A storming run down the far side saw Fairyland come home in great style, defying So Perfect, who beat her conqueror in the Nunthorpe a few starts previously.

CURRAGH COMMENT MAKE A CHALLENGE has really come into his own of late, backing up his bloodless 6f victory here over this shorter trip at Navan. The UK raiders pose a huge threat to him, though, with Nunthorpe second Que Amoro a real speedball who should be battling on all the way to the line. The likes of Equilateral, A’ali, Glass Slippers and Liberty Beach are others who have been defeated by Battaash at some point this term but cross the Irish Sea with live chances. Of the remaining home-based contingent, Sonaiyla may well have more to offer and is no forlorn hope for a place.
WIN: MAKE A CHALLENGE
DANGER: A’ALI
IN THIS RACE LAST YEAR A great field assembled for this last year, with the likes of Australian raider Houtzen, fine filly Mabs Cross and the improving favourite - Soffia.

THE MOYGLARE STUD STAKES Seven furlongs is the trip for this talented group of fillies. Many Classic horses have come out of this race in recent years, will we see another classy filly this time around? A prestigious prize with a roll of honour to match. Listing the classy fillies to have won this race would take too long, so here are a few highlights. It’s no surprise that Ballydoyle have enjoyed tremendous success in this race. However, some notable UK-trained fillies sneak on to the list, with the likes of Chimes for Freedom, trained by Henry Cecil and ridden by Steve Cauthen, with the superb Sky Lantern and Cursory Glance prevailing in recent times. Sky Lantern would progress to achieve remarkable things in her three-year-old season, winning the English 1000 Guineas, Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Sun Chariot back at Newmarket. Off the track, fillies who have excelled in Sky Lantern this race have also achieved remarkable things in the bloodstock world. 2010 winner Misty for Me has produced star sprinter U S Navy Flag and Group 1 winning mare Roly Poly, with subsequent winner Maybe producing English 2000 Guineas hero Saxon Warrior. Minding In recent times, we witnessed the spectacular Minding win this, the first of many Group 1 wins for this champion mare, and a generational talent emerged last year in Love. She now sits at the top of the market for the Arc this year, where she faces a fascinating clash with Enable.

LAWMAN (FR) - LADY GORGEOUS (GB) Trained by JOSEPH O’BRIEN A wide margin win at Bellewstown on debut was followed by a defeat at the hands of Shale at Leopardstown. GALILEO - HOMECOMING QUEEN Trained by DONNACHA O’BRIEN This talented filly is out of a 1,000 Guineas winner and she looks one to follow as a three-year-old. Has work to do with Pretty Gorgeous but will be bang there at the finish.
THUNDER BEAUTY
NIGHT OF THUNDER - QUIANIA Trained by KEN CONDON A winner over six furlongs on debut, this filly steps up a furlong in trip but on pedigree that should suit perfectly. Represents a team in great form with their juveniles and is respected.
AUNTY BIRDY
CAMACHO (GB) - BENEDICTE Trained by JIM BOLGER Has won over course and distance, winning a typically hot fillies’ maiden. She should improve further for that and is with a top team to make her mark at this level.

LAST YEAR’S WINNER
It’s plausible that nobody, expect those at Ballydoyle, could have foreseen just how good Love would turn out to be in the aftermath of her win in this race last year. A consistent juvenile, she got the Group 1 win here, beating the Roger Varian-trained Rockfel winner Daahyeh in second and stablemate So Wonderful back in third. The form holds a strong look, with Under The Stars and Albigna further back in the field, but this was all about the winner, who demonstrated professionalism and a staying power that would help her progress to be the best three-year-old middle distance filly in training the following year. Now a warm favourite for Paris showpiece the Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe, she’s excelled this season, winning the English 1,000 Guineas and Epsom Oaks, before landing the Yorkshire Oaks in sublime style.

WIN AND YOU’RE IN THE BREEDERS’ CUP CONNECTION Two of today’s Group 1 races, the Derrinstown Stud Flying Five Stakes and the Moyglare Stud Stakes, are part of the ‘Win and You’re In’ series for the Breeders’ Cup, where the winner automatically gains entry to the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint and the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies’ Turf respectively. While the Flying Five hasn’t yielded competitors in it’s American counterpart, very few European sprinters are yet to take up their place in the Sprint contest. Soldier’s Call brought a level of American form to the table in the Flying Five last year, as he ran at Churchill Downs as a juvenile in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint in 2018, before finishing a close fourth in the Flying Five last year. The Moyglare form translates better over the Atlantic, with recent placers in the two-year-old contest running at the Breeders’ Cup. While last year’s winner Love didn’t take up the option of running at Santa Anita, Daahyeh, who was second, ran in the race, Daahyeh finishing a good second under William Buick and landing valuable black type. Albigna, sixth in the Moyglare, improved to finish fourth behind Daahyeh. In 2015, Alice Springs finished a length and a quarter third behind the talented Minding and Ballydoyle in the Moyglare, before being denied a follow up win at the Breeders’ Cup, going down by three quarters of a length at Keeneland to the Mark Casse-trained Catch A Alice Springs Glimpse. In recent times, September finished third in both the Moyglare and the equivalent race at Del Mar, and the search for a filly capable of winning both races goes on.

RACE FOUR
CURRAGH COMMENT Aidan O’Brien has won five of the last 10 runnings of this race and Mother Earth looks to be his best chance today, but the master of Ballydoyle could be overshadowed by his sons on this occasion. Donnacha O’Brien will be hoping Shale can do the business and she was impressive when beating PRETTY GORGEOUS at Leopardstown two starts ago, but the latter, who represents Joseph O’Brien, improved to slam Shale in the Group 2 Debutante Stakes over course and distance last time and she is very much the one to beat. At longer odds, Bubbles On Ice can run well on her 7f debut.
WIN: PRETTY GORGEOUS
DANGER: SHALE
IN THIS RACE LAST YEAR It’s plausible that nobody, expect those at Ballydoyle, could have foreseen just how good Love would turn out to be in the aftermath of her win in this race last year.

THE GOFFS VINCENT O’BRIEN NATIONAL STAKES A fascinating race in prospect, as we will witness yet another superb renewal of this quality race. First ran in 1849, this contest has witnessed the emergence of some of racing’s greatest. In the early days, the legendary Vincent O’Brien unleashed his most talented in this race, with the likes of El Gran Senor and bloodstock phenomenon El Prado, sire of Medaglia Mastercraftsman d’Oro and Kitten’s Joy to name a few. In recent years, another O’Brien has taken over the domination of this race, with Aidan emerging as a force to be reckoned with. Hawk Wing, One Cool Cat,George Washington and Mastercraftsman made the 2000’s a roaring success for Ballydoyle.
Away from County Tipperary, a host of racing giants have won this race. Sinndar gave John Oxx, Johnny Murtagh and the Aga Khan a memorable win back in 1999. Dubawi took the 2004 renewal for Godolphin, with Jim Bolger supplying back to back winners Teofilo and New Approach. Bolger and Charlie Appleby have stopped the Ballydoyle battalion in recent years, winning New Approach with Verbal Dexterity and Quorto respectively, with the Godolphin blue carried to victory for a second successive year following the demolition job by Pinatubo last year.
ONES TO WATCH
We could see a potential racing superstar emerge in this classy contest.
LUCKY VEGA
BATTLEGROUND (USA)
LOPE DE VEGA - QUEEN OF CARTHAGE (USA) Trained by JESSICA HARRINGTON Winner of the Keeneland Phoenix Stakes over six furlongs last time, he comes here as a leading contender. He won that Group 1 with ease but faces classy rivals in this contest.
WAR FRONT (USA) - FOUND Trained by AIDAN O’BRIEN A colt with a fine pedigree, being out of an Arc winner who was a fantastic filly. He landed a Listed race and Group 2 race the last twice and he could be a very special horse.
MASTER OF THE SEAS
DUBAWI - FIRTH OF LORNE Trained by CHARLIE APPLEBY The yard have won this race the last two years (Quorto & Pinatubo), and this colt looks a type with plenty of upside. Winner of a Group 2 last time out and is an interesting runner.
THUNDER MOON
ZOFFANY - SMALL SACRIFICE Trained by JOSEPH O’BRIEN Very few colts win in the manner he did on debut over course and distance. Some question marks over the form but he has to be considered off the back of his debut success.

LAST YEAR’S WINNER
Charlie Appleby made it back to back wins in this race with his talented juvenile Pinatubo, who followed in the footsteps of Quorto to win in the Godolphin blue. A torrent of rain couldn’t stop the unbeaten son of Shamardal, who continued his prodigal juvenile career to power away, winning by a widening nine-length margin, a margin which doesn’t tell the true story of just how dominant he was. It’s never an easy feat to see of Aidan O’Brien two-year-olds in a race of this nature, but he demolished Armory and Arizona, two of Ballydoyle’s brightest juveniles, and stamped his authority as one of the best juvenile’s seen for a long time. While he hasn’t quite continued the winning streak as a three-year-old, he was only beaten narrowly in the English 2,000 Guineas and St James’ Palace Stakes, before gaining a Group 1 win at Deauville.

THE GOFFS VINCENT O’BRIEN NATIONAL STAKES (GROUP 1) HONOURING A TRUE LEGEND OF THE TURF If ever a man deserved to have a Group One race named in his honour, Vincent O’Brien does. From humble beginnings in Co. Cork, O’Brien quickly developed into the most dominant National Hunt trainer of his era. To name but a few, he saddled Cottage Rake to win three successive Cheltenham Gold Cups (1948-50), Hatton’s Grace to win three consecutive Champion Hurdles (1949-51) and perhaps most remarkably, he trained the winner of the Aintree Grand National in three consecutive years with three different horses (1953-55). Hatton’s Grace was sold at Goffs as were O’Brien’s 1955 Grand National winner Quare Times and 1953 Gold Cup winner Knock Hard. However, it wasn’t until Vincent bought and built up a new training base at Ballydoyle in Co. Tipperary and turned his hand to training Flat horses that his influence became truly worldwide. Having partnered with John Magnier, the owner of Coolmore Stud and a multitude of prominent racehorse owners, most notably Robert Sangster, O’Brien helped to change the world of thoroughbred breeding by strongly supporting the progeny of a diminutive Canadian-based stallion called Northern Dancer. That proved to be inspired, as Northern Dancer would go on to establish himself as one of the most influential sires of all time and Vincent trained such talented and influential sons of his such as Nijinsky, Be My Guest, The Minstrel, Sadler’s Wells and El Gran Senor. The big-race wins that O’Brien enjoyed on Flat are too numerous to list in entirety, but there are many highlights, with his record in Classics being particularly noteworthy. In total, O’Brien saddled 27 Irish Classic winners including six in the Irish Derby, as well as 16 British Classics including six Epsom Derby winners - including Larkspur who was purchased at Goffs. At the inaugural yearling sales held at the new Goffs complex in Kill in 1975, a son of Northern Dancer became Europe’s highest priced yearling of all time. The colt, Lot 419 who was offered by Moyglare Stud with a nomination for the National Stakes at the Curragh, was purchased by Vincent O’Brien for 127,000gns. The yearling was named Be My Guest and went on to become European Champion Sire in 1982. Of the dozens of Group 1 races Vincent won throughout his career, the Group 1 he won on more occasions than any other was the National Stakes at the Curragh. Often targeting his best two-year-old at it, he saddled the winner of it on no less than 15 occasions, with perhaps his most memorable winners of the race being the legendary Sir Ivor (1967) and El Gran Senor (1983). Thus, it is fitting that the National Stakes should nowadays be known as The Goffs Vincent O’Brien National Stakes in recognition of the remarkable contribution that Vincent O’Brien made to making Ireland the leading thoroughbred nation in the world. Hopefully today’s renewal will live up to the high standard that Vincent helped to set in the race during the course of his remarkable career. Lester Piggott aboard Nijinsky

PURPLE, whitein seams, sleeves, purple cap Got off the mark a maidenstriped over 6f here last time having shown promise when behind Lucky Vega in the Phoenix
CURRAGH COMMENT MASTER OF THE SEAS created a very big impression when winning the Superlative Stakes by three lengths at Newmarket in July. The son of Dubawi had more in hand that day than the winning margin suggests and he can make it a hat-trick of victories in this race for connections. Lucky Vega bounced back from a defeat to easily take the Phoenix Stakes over 6f here a month ago. The step up in trip should not be a problem for this colt and he may even improve for it. Battleground has to be of some interest following his Royal Ascot and Goodwood victories and he completes the shortlist.
WIN: MASTER OF THE SEAS
DANGER: BATTLEGROUND
IN THIS RACE LAST YEAR Charlie Appleby made it back to back wins in this race with his talented juvenile Pinatubo, who followed in the footsteps of Quorto to win in the Godolphin blue.
HORSE WELFARE - A PRIORITY At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse.
RACE FIVE
The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority. THE COMER GROUP INTERNATIONAL IRISH ST LEGER The feature staying race of Longines Irish Champions Weekend is steeped in history. Legends of racing have won this race, with many horses completing doubles and even trebles of success. Talented stayers feature through the history of this race. Originally restricted to three-year-olds, in 1983 it became open age and a key target in the calendar for stayers. Dual winners include Vintage Crop, Oscar Schindler and Kayf Tara, now a highly successful National Hunt stallion. In recent years, Yeats took this race in on his path to glory, and the talented Sans Frontieres, trained by Jeremy Noseda, landed the spoils in 2010. Duncan and Jukebox Jury deadheated in a thrilling race in 2011, while Brown Panther became another Yeats UK-trained winner in 2014 for Tom Dascombe and Richard Kingscote. Mention of course must go to Vinnie Roe, who won this race an astonishing four times, winning as a three, four, five and then six-year-old, each time partnered for Pat Smullen for Dermot Weld.
Order of St George
The talented stayer Order of St George won renewals of this race under Joseph O’Brien and Ryan Moore, whereas Wicklow Brave took the 2016 renewal when the outsider of four. The O’Brien domination was continued by Flag Of Honour two years ago but Dermot Weld trained the tough, improving filly Search For A Song to victory in the Classic last year, capping a memorable Irish Champions Weekend for Chris Hayes.
ONES TO WATCH
The feature race of the day and it certainly won’t disappoint.

GALILEO - POLISHED GEM Trained by DERMOT WELD Last year’s winner hasn’t sparkled in her starts this season but this has been the goal all along. LAST YEAR’S WINNER
Fresh from the success of Tarnawa in the Blandford, the Dermot Weld-Chris Hayes juggernaught rolled on to win this premier Classic with Search For A Song. The three-year-old filly was dominating, and given a superb ride by Hayes, who let his eager mount stride on a mile out and take it up, confident the filly would make the best of her way home. Her staying power came into full force and she saw off the talented Kew Gardens and Southern France back in second and third, with Melbourne Cup winner Cross Counter unable to land a telling blow back in fourth. The Moyglare filly has been brought along this season with a repeat victory in this race as the target, and if there’s anyone that could be trusted to reapeat the feat it’s Dermot Weld.

THE RACE THAT STOPS A NATION FROM THE CURRAGH TO MELBOURNE In recent years, the path to Melbourne has taken horses through County Kildare and the racecourse on the Curragh. What better place to start than with Vintage Crop? The dual Comer Group International Irish St Leger winner (1993 and 1994) won the Melbourne Cup in 1993, becoming the first European-trained horse and the first Irish-bred horse to win the race.
Vintage Crop
The talented gelding has a statue at the Curragh, commemorating his staying abilities, and although he couldn’t win a second Melbourne Cup, he returned Down Under in 1994 and 1995 where he finished seventh and third respectively. In many ways, Dermot Weld’s star stayer paved the way for European runners in the Melbourne Cup. The legendary trainer repeated the feat in 2002 with Media Puzzle, albeit via a different route of contesting more Australian races. In recent years, Wicklow Brave finished fourth in the 2017 Curragh showpiece, a year after he’d won the race, before finishing mid-division behind an Irish-trained 1-2-3 in Rekindling, Johannes Vermeer and Max Dynamite, landing a big win for Joseph O’Brien and owner Lloyd Williams. The colours of Lloyd Williams have become synonymous with the Melbourne Cup-Irish raid in recent years, with 2018 Irish Derby winner Latrobe a highlight. He didn’t run in the Cup that year, but Charlie Appleby’s Cross Counter won the race that year, and he was sent off favourite for last year’s Comer Group International Irish St Leger, but was only able to finish fourth. Master Of Reality was fifth and was just denied in the Melbourne Cup, finishing fourth by a head, and all roads lead to Melbourne for him again this year following a facile win at Down Royal. He will face tough competition though, with recent Comer Group Master Of Reality International Irish St Leger Trial winner Delphi looking a big threat to his rival, having recently been purchased by Lloyd Williams. Former stablemate Il Paradiso also looks to be a threat if improving on his close third in the blanket finish from the race last year.

SOVEREIGN was a surprise winner of last year’s Irish Derby when benefiting from a forceful ride on the front end, and Aidan O’Brien’s colt arrives having attempted to give Enable a race in the King George at Ascot. The return to 1m6f, a trip over which he finished third on his return at this track, might yield further progression from the four-year-old. Fujaira Prince justified connections’ patience by landing the Ebor, having gone up 9lb for winning at Royal Ascot the time before. He enters the reckoning along with Micro Manage, who remains open to improvement, and last year’s heroine Search For A Song.

CURRAGH COMMENT
THE PAT SMULLEN CHAMPIONS RACE FOR CANCER TRIALS IRELAND The undoubted highlight of last year’s Longines Irish Champions Weekend was the coming together of Irish racing to raise money and awareness for Cancer Trials Ireland,in support of legend of the weighing room, Pat Smullen. You can watch a replay of the race and the interviews afterwards by clicking on the image at the bottom of this page. AP McCoy showed that his winning streak hadn’t disappeared despite retirement, as he guided home Quizical, trained by Sheila Lavery, to roll back the years and win the mile contest from Ruby Walsh and Aussie Valentine back in second and Johnny Murtagh and Red Striker in third. A year on from what was a memorable day at the Curragh, the work of Cancer Trials Ireland continues, hugely benefitted by the massive over €2.5 million raised through initatives following the race, charity events and a well-supported online auction. On what was a special day, the rallying call of Ireland elite jockey’s was answered in some style, as nine of Irish racing’s biggest and best names turned out to provide a spectacle of racing unlikely to be repeated. After the race, Smullen said “I never dreamed that we would reach a figure like this and it is a tribute to the kind nature of everyone in the racing and breeding industry – I am overwhelmed! Sunday at the Curragh was a special day and a huge ‘thank you’ to everybody who came along. I don’t think we’ll ever see a race like that again and I owe so much to my good friends, the nine champion jockeys, who came out of retirement to ride in it, as well as the race sponsors, owners and trainers who made the race possible.”

CURRAGH COMMENT STAR OF ORION has made the frame in both starts since making a winning debut at Newmarket in July and he was last seen finishing third in a nursery at York. That form was boosted when the winner won again at Doncaster this week and this son of Footstepsinthesand merits the utmost respect this afternoon. Eastern Voice bumped into a useful rival when second at Roscommon late last month and that form gives him a chance today, while Night On Earth and Shark Two One are others to note.
WIN: STAR OF ORION
DANGER: EASTERN VOICE
IN THIS RACE LAST YEAR The UK raiders continued their domination of this valuable sales race, making it four consecutive victories with Michael Bell’s Stone Circle, partnered by Andrea Atzeni. The UK contingent landed a 1-2-3, with Archie Watson’s Maystar and Hugo Palmer’s Hamish Macbeth finishing just a head and neck ehind the winner, who gave away weight to the rest of the field. He seemed suited most by the six and a half furlong trip, with the draw in 14 not proving an issue. Stall 26 may have been the difference for third-placed Hamish Macbeth, but there’s no denying the winner battled on bravely to land the big prize.
PLUS 10 BONUS SCHEME The connections of the winner, if qualified under the Rules of the Plus 10 bonus scheme, will share a prize of €12,500.

CURRAGH COMMENT It could be SONNYBOYLISTON who lands the knockout blow in the finale. Johnny Murtagh’s son of Power has won two of his three outings since the resumption of racing and, equipped with first-time cheekpieces, he looks capable of defying a further 13lb hike in the ratings. Numerian has been running consistently well in Group company and makes plenty of appeal switching to handicap level, especially with top apprentice Gavin Ryan taking 3lb off his back. Simsir, Finans Bay and Taramansour are just a few more with claims in a wide-open contest.
WIN: SONNYBOYLISTON
DANGER: SIMSIR
IN THIS RACE LAST YEAR The story of One Cool Poet wouldn’t be out of place on the big screen, with the Matthew Smith-trained gelding landing three back to back Galway handicaps, progressing from a mark of 66 to 90, with only a blip at Leopardstown coming between him and a completed four timer with a win in this race. Billy Lee was at his best to land this race, giving his mount a great hold up ride and stylishly guiding his mount between weakening rivals, gathering momentum as he went and using all his mount’s staying power to win by three quarters of a length from Numerian in second and Saltonstall back in third.
NORTHFIELDS The 8th race today honours the great Northfields, (Chestnut 1968, by Northern Dancer – Little Hut, by Occupy), winner of the 1971 Louisiana and Hawthorn Derbies and Kent Stakes, purchased privately in mid-October by the British Bloodstock Agency from John M Olin. The colt was to stand in 1972 at the Dowdstown Stud, Maynooth, Co Kildare. The earner of $195,071 is a half-brother to the champion European miler Habitat and to two other American stakes victors, Hardware and Guest Room. Principal Irish winners: Northern Treasure – 1976 Irish 2000 Guineas and Blandford Stakes (K Prendergast) North Stoke – 1977 Irish Champion Stakes (John Dunlop) Aviance – 1984 Phoenix Stakes (David O’Brien) Northern View – 1976 Madrid Handicap (Stephen Quirke) Miami Springs – 1978 Tyros Stakes (MA O’Toole) [Sweeney Guide to the Irish Turf] Principal English winners:
