WELCOME
TO
THE CURRAGH Where Champions Are Made Welcome to the Curragh for Day 1 of our Autumn Festival. We have had a great year of racing so far in The Curragh and it looks like we are in for more top-quality action this afternoon. This is a very special day as we welcome owners back to the Curragh. Owners make an invaluable contribution to racing and it is great that you are back with us today. While we are sorry that we can’t welcome our supporters to the Curragh, we are pleased that you will all be able to engage with the Curragh in so many different ways. We are very pleased with the response to our new digital race card which allows people to get some of the race day experience in their own homes. The feature race this afternoon is The Alan Smurfit Memorial Beresford Stakes which is kindly sponsored by the Smurfit Family. Unfortunately, Alan passed away recently and this race honours his memory. This Group 2 contest has produced many great champions over the years going back to Sadler’s Wells and more recently, Sea the Stars and Japan. It is always a great indicator of future stars and this year looks like being another great renewal. Our other Group race is the Renaissance Stakes is kindly sponsored by Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club and we are grateful to them for their generous support. We would like to thank our other sponsors this afternoon, The Irish European Breeders Fund, Foran Equine, Clark Recruitment, Equisoft, Tipperary Crystal and Manguard Security. We are very fortunate to have so many great sponsors in the Curragh and we would ask you to support them whenever you can. Pat Smullen was not only a world class jockey but a true gentleman and we are all so sad at his passing last week. Pat spent much of his time on the Curragh as stable jockey to Dermot Weld but he also loved riding here, where he was a true master. Our thoughts are with Frances, Hannah, Paddy and Sarah. May you rest in peace Pat, you may be gone, but you left a lasting impression on us all that will never be forgotten. I hope that you and your family are well and please stay safe and I look forward to welcoming you back to the Curragh before too long. PAT KEOGH Chief Executive

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. 5

CURRAGH COMMENT BELMONT AVENUE only just failed to make a winning debut at Cork 10 days ago and the son of Zoffany should be very hard to beat with that experience now under his belt. My Minervina has a similar profile to the selection and she is an obvious threat, while Snap Chap and Hector De Maris are others with valid form claims. Santa Barbara is an eye-catching newcomer, being a half-sister to the multiple Group 1 winner Iridessa, while Bamboo Bay and Bonte Moi also merit market inspections.

PAT S M U L L E N
22 May 1977 - 15 September 2020 The word ‘legend’ is overused in modern society, but not in the case of Pat Smullen. A dedicated father, husband and jockey, Pat embodied everything that is great about humanity. His perseverance in the face of pancreatic cancer leaves a legacy that will stand forever, raising money and giving hope to others. A nine-time Irish Champion Jockey, Pat enjoyed memorable moments at the Curragh, winning the Irish 1,000 Guineas with Nightime and Bethrah in 2006 and 2010, with victories in the Irish Derby in 2004 and 2016 with Grey Swallow and Harzand respectively. Pat partnered Vinnie Roe to win four consecutive renewals of the Irish St Leger, and landed the National Stakes with subsequent English 2,000 Guineas winner Refuse To Bend in 2002. In organising the Pat Smullen Charity Race on day two of 2019 Irish Champions Weekend, Pat brought together a host of racing legends in a spectacle that will never be forgotten, raising over €2.5million for Cancer Trials Ireland, a cause that has helped so many people. Pat’s memory will forever live on in the hearts of those he touched.

CURRAGH COMMENT HUDDLE UP took a huge step forward from his racecourse debut here when successful at Cork last month and could continue on the upwards curve this autumn giving his liking for soft ground. Willie McCreery’s charge can put his experience to good use against the well-bred Ones Are Wild, who is related to a couple of precocious types and represents a powerful yard. Belle Image was a 33-1 third here a fortnight ago and is fancied to build on that.

CURRAGH COMMENT BROSNA EMPRESS has stepped forward with each start in her career and went very close to gaining her first success when second at Cork last week. The handicapper only raised her 1lb for that effort and Jessica Harrington’s filly boasts strong credentials in her bid to go one better. Dreams Delivered made a winning start to life in nurseries when scoring at Fairyhouse on Monday and he is expected to be in the mix along with Barretstown, who went close to shedding the maiden tag at Down Royal earlier in the month.

HORSE WELFARE - A PRIORITY At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority. CURRAGH COMMENT SOUL SEEKER did well when making the podium in both outings last autumn and ran with plenty of credit when fifth on his reappearance at Navan last month. That will have blown away the cobwebs and the well-bred son of Oasis Dream could be the answer here. Stalingrad did little wrong when rattling the crossbar on debut and is likely to be thereabouts, while the improving Midnight Fire also makes appeal following his recent Cork second. More experienced trio, Glow Worm, Laurel Grove and Soineanta also enter calculations in a competitive event.

THE SMURFIT FAMILY AND THE CURRAGH The Smurfit Family have enjoyed a successful association with The Curragh for many years, and in particular one of racing’s finest ever stayers. Known for his fine association with Dermot Weld, the pair enjoyed many successes on the racetrack, both on the flat and in the National Hunt sphere. At the Curragh in particular, the Gladness Stakes of 1988 marked the start of an era, with Mick Kinane guiding Careafolie to victory in the seven furlong Group 3 for Dermot Weld. Two of Dr Smurfit’s horses clashed in the 1991 Macdonagh Boland Stakes, a Listed race over seven furlongs, with the Jim Bolger-trained Ballyloop under Christy Roche getting the better of Pre-Eminent in the same colours for Dermot Weld and Mick Kinane. A few years later, Vintage Crop emerged. A victory in Newmarket’s Cesarewitchunder rider Walter Swinburn marked him as a stayer to follow, and he improved to win the 1993 Curragh Cup under Mick Kinane. A short break followed, before he made a promising return over a mile and a quarter and took a step forward to land the Jefferson Smurfit Memorial Irish St Leger in 1993, beating Richard Hannon’s Assessor and Foresee back in second and third. A historic and ground breaking victory in the Melbourne Cup followed, before he returned to the Curragh for victory in a conditions race to prepare the talented stayer for a repeat victory in the feature St Leger. The victory did indeed follow under Mick Kinane, winning by a widening margin of three lengths to see off John Oxx’s Rayseka and Johnny Murtagh. The Smurfit silks were also carried to victory by talented mare Cheviot Amble, trained by Patrick Flynn. The tough mare was a multiple Listed winner, landing the Mooresbridge Stakes in heavy conditions in 1994 under John Egan. Humbel too was a smart horse for Dermot Weld, winning the 1995 Blandford Stakes (then a Group 2 over 11f and open to colts), and although Media Puzzle only won once at the Curragh, he too was a smart stayer in the hands of Dermot Weld, winning the 2002 Melbourne Cup under Damien Oliver. Michael’s son Tony has continued the family’s interest in horse racing with a number of horses currently in training with Johnny Murtagh including the Group 3-placed Pronouncement. 29
THE ALAN SMURFIT MEMORIAL BERESFORD STAKES This race has always been a good marker for success. Since Sadler’s Wells took the 1983 renewal, we’ve seen thoroughbred giants win this on their way to big success. El Prado was victorious for Vincent O’Brien and Lester Piggott in 1981, before the Aidan O’Brien domination began with Johan Cruyff in 1996. In recent times, we’ve seen stars of the track come out in force for this race. Azamour took the 2003 renewal for Sea The Stars John Oxx and Johnny Murtagh, with the superb Sea The Stars and St Nicholas Abbey winning back to back renewals in 2008 and 2009 respectively. In what was truly a golden age of racing, Casamento added to the already illustrious roll of honour and cemented his place in history. The domination of Aidan O’Brien since then is yet to be stopped.
Saxon Warrior
His representatives have took the each and every renewal of this race since 2010 and he bids to make it an astonishing 10 wins in a row here today. Recent successes for Ballydoyle have come in the Derrick Smith colours, with the talented grey, and future English St Leger winner, Capri landing the race in 2016.
Subsequent English 2,000 Guineas winner Saxon Warrior took the race in fine style a year later, before the talented Japan capped three consecutive wins in the race last year for Ryan Moore. Last year we saw Innisfree win under Donnacha O’Brien, and although we haven’t seen him since, his second to subsequent Guineas winner Kameko at Newcastle after this win means his return to the track is highly anticipated.
ONES TO WATCH Aidan O’Brien is trebly represented in this year’s renewal, with Brazil, High Definition and Sir Lucan. High Definition is the preferred runner, given his course and distance success back in August, and he’s a full-brother to last year’s winner Innisfree. Ger Lyon’s Ides Of August won on debut at Leopardstown before finding a Group 2 at Leopardstown a little much. With that run under his belt he can take a step forward and find more improvement, as can Jack Duggan, who was last at Leopardstown. Wuqood represents a very powerful yard and won on debut at Gowran, proving a mile is perfect for him at present. He’s bred very well, Dermot Weld trained the mare and this runner is related to Rakan, who the yard train. Also trained by Ger Lyons is Reve De Vol, who runs in the Moyglare silks. He fared best of a bunch at Leopardstown and is respected as such. 30

CURRAGH COMMENT Aidan O’Brien has won the last nine runnings of this contest and he fires three bullets at today’s race, with HIGH DEFINITION fancied to build on his impressive course-and-distance debut success and land the spoils. Green and last at halfway, there was much to like about the way he powered home to win a decent-looking maiden here last month and he will no doubt have learnt plenty from that experience. Reve De Vol had a number of these behind when third in a Leopardstown Group 2 two weeks ago and he is likely to be in the shake-up again, while Monaasib has every chance if getting home on his first start beyond 7f.

Earlier in the season the four-year-old only found Speak In Colours a head too good in a Group 2, also over this track and trip, and it would be no surprise to see her play a leading role today. Summerghand also struggled at Haydock but he was not disgraced on that occasion and he could prove to be the main threat to the selection. Others to consider are Ventura Rebel and Urban Beat.

CURRAGH COMMENT FULL MOON MAGIC returned to form when second at Killarney over further last month for Joseph O’Brien and could take a bit of stopping here now dropped to her preferred distance. This progressive four-year-old won’t mind whichever way the ground turns and might prove too strong for Peregrine Run, who fell over fences six days ago at Listowel and could restore his confidence with a sound run now on the level. Place Des Vosges may prove best of the remainder.
WIN: FULL MOON MAGIC
DANGER: PLACE DES VOSGES

CURRAGH COMMENT CARRYTHEONE was unfortunate on his handicap debut when clipping heels and going through the rail over C&D last month. He remains open to significant improvement based on his maiden success the time before and can continue his stable’s excellent run of form. Dance Jupiter can enter the reckoning following his second at Galway earlier in the month, while the hat-trick seeking Khafaaq and Mudlahhim, who finished first and second respectively at Tipperary earlier in the month, are others worthy of consideration.
