WELCOME
TO
THE CURRAGH Where Champions Are Made Welcome to the Curragh for Day 2 of our Autumn Festival. We have had a great year of racing so far in The Curragh and it looks like we are in for more top-quality action this afternoon. This is a very special weekend as we welcome owners back to the Curragh. Owners make an invaluable contribution to racing and it is great that you are back with us today. We have two Group 3 races this afternoon. We would like to thank the Weld Family for their generous support of the Weld Park Stakes which looks like being a really interesting race. The Comer Group are great supporters of the Curragh and kindly sponsor all of our big staying races each year. We are very grateful to Luke and Brian for the continued support and look forward to a great renewal of the Comer Group International Loughbrown Stakes. We would like to thank our other sponsors this afternoon, The Irish European Breeders Fund, Heffernan Tyres, Mongey Communications, Sycamore Lodge Equine Hospital and Extra. ie which is part of DMG Media. We are very fortunate to have so many great sponsors in the Curragh and we would ask you to support them whenever you can. While we are sorry that we can’t welcome our supporters to the Curragh, we are pleased that you will all be able to engage with the Curragh in so many different ways. We are very pleased with the response to our new digital race card which allows people to get some of the race day experience in their own homes. Pat Smullen was not only a world class jockey but a true gentleman and we are all so sad at his passing last week. Pat spent much of his time on the Curragh as stable jockey to Dermot Weld but he also loved riding here, where he was a true master. Our thoughts are with Frances, Hannah, Paddy and Sarah. May you rest in peace Pat, you may be gone, but you left a lasting impression on us all that will never be forgotten. It is appropriate that Token Gesture, who won the Weld Park Stakes in 1996, was the first stakes winner of his illustrious career. I hope that you and your family are well and please stay safe and I look forward to welcoming you back to the Curragh before too long. PAT KEOGH Chief Executive

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. 5

PAT S M U L L E N
22 May 1977 - 15 September 2020 The word ‘legend’ is overused in modern society, but not in the case of Pat Smullen. A dedicated father, husband and jockey, Pat embodied everything that is great about humanity. His perseverance in the face of pancreatic cancer leaves a legacy that will stand forever, raising money and giving hope to others. A nine-time Irish Champion Jockey, Pat enjoyed memorable moments at the Curragh, winning the Irish 1,000 Guineas with Nightime and Bethrah in 2006 and 2010, with victories in the Irish Derby in 2004 and 2016 with Grey Swallow and Harzand respectively. Pat partnered Vinnie Roe to win four consecutive renewals of the Irish St Leger, and landed the National Stakes with subsequent English 2,000 Guineas winner Refuse To Bend in 2002. In organising the Pat Smullen Charity Race on day two of 2019 Irish Champions Weekend, Pat brought together a host of racing legends in a spectacle that will never be forgotten, raising over €2.5million for Cancer Trials Ireland, a cause that has helped so many people. Pat’s memory will forever live on in the hearts of those he touched.

VAN GOGH clearly sets the standard having only found one too good in the Group 2 Juvenile Stakes at Leopardstown earlier in the month and that was not his first good effort in Group company. Aidan O’Brien’s colt has to be given the utmost respect now that he has his sights lowered. Colour Sergeant is a consistent performer and he should be in the mix once again. National Ballet is out of a full-sister to the Group 1 winner Maybe, who is the dam of Saxon Warrior (also by Deep Impact), and he should not be underestimated despite his lack of race experience. Others to consider are Rince Beo and Wisteria Girl.

RACE ONE
CURRAGH COMMENT
CHARLIE WELD
Charlie Weld was one of the most respected and successful dual purpose trainers of his generation. He was responsible for approximately 1000 winners during his training career which spanned 1950, 1960 and the early 1970s. Initially based close to the Phoenix Park, he later moved to Rosewell House on the Curragh where he enjoyed the majority of his success. The victory of Decies in the National Produce Stakes was one of his most notable flat wins but the performances of the ultra-consistent Farney Fox deserves special mention. The versatile performer not only was ridden to victory in the 1960 Irish Lincoln by TP Burns, but leading jump jockey Paddy Powell also rode the son of Archive into second place in the Champion Hurdle. Always a trainer with great foresight and ambition, he sent Mrs M Donnelly’s stable star to compete in the Washington DC International race and in so doing became the first Irish trainer to have a runner in what was then the world’s greatest international race. Other top class flat performers included 1963 Phoenix Stakes winner Right Strath and Wily Trout, who won the Cumberland Lodge Stakes at Ascot. Charlie also enjoyed tremendous success with some of his National Hunt performers. These included 1959 Galway Plate winner Highfield Lad and the brilliant young chaser Coniston, who won both the Champion novice chases at Punchestown and Fairyhouse. He was ridden both times by Joe Malone. Galway Hurdle winner Ticonderoga was another notable winner as he also landed the Galway Amateur Handicap for Charlie’s 15-year-old son Dermot!

MARGUERITE WELD
Originally from Kilsheelan in County Tipperary, her love of horses was engendered quite early in her life and she started to ride from the age of 3 and experienced her first hunt at the age of 10 with the Waterford Hunt. Her father was a dairy farmer but also kept and trained horses. She went to school in the Ursuline Convent in Waterford and during holidays competed in showjumping at various shows. After school she worked for the Department of Agriculture in Naas. During the war years, she regularly won point-to-points with the Naas harriers. It is during this time she met Charlie Weld at a meet with the Kildare Hounds. After their marriage they moved to England when Charlie took out a trainers licence. After a few years, they returned to Ireland and based themselves close to the Phoenix Park during the 1950s. They subsequently moved to the Curragh to be based at Rosewell House and Charlie’s career went from strength to strength with his wife playing a very important role in that success. Breeding horses was a huge interest to her. Initially she owned Glenvale Stud in Carrick on Suir and following its sale, she purchased Pipers Hill Stud in Naas. She later moved to Springbank close to the Curragh where she bred many top class performers including Irish Derby winner Grey Swallow and Nightime winner of the Irish 1,000 Guineas. She resided at Springbank until her death at the age of 98 in 2014.

THE WELD PARK STAKES This Group 3 is gaining prominence as a key race for late blooming two-year-olds, with the seven furlongs of the Curragh a fine litmus test for Classic contenders and top class prospects in the making. A quick look down the roll of honour will highlight two names - Mick Kinane and John Oxx. The former won this race seven times in the saddle, the first being Lone Bidder in 1980 and the last Eva’s Request in 2007. John Oxx gave Mick one of his wins with Arch Swing in 2006, and landed the race in 1994 with the classy mare Ridgewood Pearl under Johnny Murtagh, before Christy Roche took over in the saddle to land a memorable victory in the 1995 John Oxx 1,000 Guineas. In recent years, Coolmore have emerged as a dominating force, with a huge battalion of top-class two-year-olds. David Wachman trained Chintz and Chrysanthemum to win the race in 2008 and 2010 for Seamie Heffernan and Wayne Lordan respectively, and Aidan O’Brien has a fine record in this too. The master of Ballydoyle won this with Magical Dream in 2012, Qualify in 2014 and Coolmore in 2015, all ridden by Joseph O’Brien. Ryan Moore was in the saddle for subsequent English 1,000 Guineas winner Hermosa’s success in 2018 (the race took place at Naas), before jockey-turned-trainer Joseph O’Brien landed the race last year Hermosa with New York girl under a fine ride by talented young rider Shane Crosse. The much missed Pat Smullen guided Eziyra to victory in 2016 for Dermot Weld.
ONES TO WATCH This looks a particularly strong renewal of the Weld Park Stakes, with a number of leading yards represents. Dermot Weld runs A Ma Chere, who has finished behind Shale in Group 3 and 1’s the last twice, and the Moyglare form is also represented by Jim Bolger’s Aunty Bridy, who was sixth in that race. The yard also run debutant Halla Rince, a daughter of Parish Hall. Joseph O’Brien runs Thinking Of You, a daughter of American Pharoah who runs in the Tabor colours. In the same ownership is the Aidan O’Brien-trained Monday, who won the Listed Ingabelle Stakes last time out, the first race of Irish Champions Weekend. She is hugely respected, as is the Ger Lyons-trained Angel Palm, a classy daughter of Dark Angel who showed significant promise when winning a maiden at Leopardstown back in August by a wide margin. No Speak Alexander wasn’t far behind Monday and is worthy of respect. 14

Jessica Harrington’s filly handles varying ground and has the most solid profile in this contest. Thinking Of You impressed when making a winning debut at Limerick despite missing the start, while Aunty Bridy was far from disgraced in Group 1 company here recently.

HORSE WELFARE - A PRIORITY At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority. CURRAGH COMMENT A STEP TOO FAR has been in fine form this summer and made it five victories in a row when getting the better of the reopposing Goodnight Girl (second) at Cork. Kieran Cotter’s thriving four-year-old is just 3lb higher now and could continue her excellent winning streak with first-time cheekpieces applied. Stablemate Inflection Point was only beaten a short head last time and strengthens the handler’s grasp on this contest, while Blairmayne rattled the crossbar over 6f here earlier this month. Denis Hogan’s pair of Breakfast Club and Boughtinthedark also make plenty of appeal, the former a winner on debut for his trainer at Navan recently.
WIN: A STEP TOO FAR
DANGER: GOODNIGHT GIRL
The Joe McGrath Premier Handicap pays tribute to one of the leading figures in Irish racing who died in 1966. He was one of the most influential figures in Irish politics and business and can also take a huge amount of credit for the success of the Irish racing industry today. He enjoyed plenty of racing success most notably with Arctic Prince who won the Epsom Derby in 1951.

CURRAGH COMMENT SIMPLY A BREEZE was disappointing in a Group 3 at Gowran last time, but she had previously run a cracker to be fourth in the same grade here, with a subsequent Listed winner behind her. Johnny Feane’s charge could find this company a lot easier and she is taken to strike. Unknown Pleasures ran a solid enough race behind Ennistymon on her reappearance in June and is interesting, while Secret Pulse went close at Cork earlier this month and could be a player. Salsa is a possible contender back at the same venue that saw her go close in June.

CURRAGH COMMENT ORDER OF AUSTRALIA has just a Dundalk triumph to his name, but it is his performances before that that make him the one to beat here. Aidan O’Brien’s colt’s comeback third to classy stable companion Tiger Moth earned him a shot at a couple of Classics and he held his own by finishing fourth in the Irish Derby and seventh in the Prix du Jockey Club. Sea The Lion and Mirann are more than useful but shouldn’t be up to successfully conceding weight to the exciting Ballydoyle representative.

CURRAGH COMMENT Kastasa slammed 2018 winner Cypress Creek in this event 12 months ago but after returning with a Gowran triumph, she then had to settle for third in the Stanerra Stakes, with Traisha just ahead of her. In any case, giving 7lb to DAWN PATROL may prove beyond both fillies because the Aidan O’Brientrained son of Galileo made the frame in the Irish Derby in the summer. He also ran well in another Classic when sixth in the Doncaster Leger and, as long as he stays, could be a class above these.

CURRAGH COMMENT SURE CERT hadn’t shown much in three starts in maiden company, but the switch to a handicap sparked Thomas Foley’s charge into life at Fairyhouse six days ago as she virtually made all off a mark of 68. A 6lb rise seems fair and the four-year-old can double her career tally. Everyhouronthehour was successful at Gowran Park last weekend and Sam Ewing’s claim negotiates part of a 5lb rise for that, while the consistent Lady Savanah is also taken seriously.
