THE JOCKEY CLUB WELCOMES YOU
Welcome to Epsom Downs Racecourse
A very warm welcome to Epsom Downs for Cazoo Ladies Day, on which we stage the third Classic of the season in the Cazoo Oaks and celebrate the very best in raceday style. It is wonderful to be able to open our gates again, having had two years of running this historic event either behind closed doors or with a spectator limit. I would like to thank Cazoo for their headline sponsorship of this two-day fixture, as well as their support of four of today’s seven races. My thanks also go to World Pool, DahlBury and Poundland for their generous sponsorship this afternoon. Among the most successful jockeys in the history of the Oaks is Lester Piggott, who won the race on no fewer than six occasions, including aboard Her Majesty The Queen’s Carrozza in 1957. The racing world has been in mourning since the news of Lester’s passing earlier this week and there will be a minute’s applause at 1.15pm today, when a wreath in the racing colours of Triple Crown-winner Nijinsky will be laid at his statue on The Queen Elizabeth II Stand Lawn. In today’s other Group One race, the DahlBury Coronation Cup, we will see the popular Pyledriver return to defend his 2021 crown, with connections hoping he will become the first horse to win back-to-back editions of the race since St. Nicholas Abbey between 2011-2013. Away from the track we are delighted to be hosting The Style Awards, celebrating the ever-changing and increasingly diverse world of raceday fashion and offering some wonderful prizes. We are thrilled to be welcoming drag star Cherry Valentine as part of an esteemed judging panel. No outfit is complete without a headpiece and some of the UK’s leading milliners have created a one-off collection of hats inspired by the seven decades of The Queen’s reign, which will be auctioned in aid of Brain Tumour Research. The hats are on display inside The Queen Elizabeth II Stand both today and tomorrow, with more information about how to bid available later in this racecard. We have some fantastic dining experiences on offer today including Chez Roux and Stanley’s, with the latter a new experience for this year from the popular Chelsea restaurant which will offer guests a taste of the very best seasonal British produce. Thank you for joining us on this special weekend. We hope that you have a wonderful day at Epsom Downs and I wish all of our runners and their connections the very best of luck.
Julia Budd Chair of Epsom Downs Racecourse

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

TODAY’S
TOP TIPS RACE ONE
The majority of past winners of this race since the turn of the millennium had won a race already and ran less than 23 days ago, so Blatant, Commander Straker and Legend Of Xanadu all fit the bill. But it might be worth taking a chance on the Richard Hannon trained SILENCER who looked green on his debut at Salisbury six days ago. This £160,000 Breeze-Up purchase will surely improve for that experience and could run a big race.
RACE TWO
This looks a highly competitive handicap and Excel Power, who secured the hat-trick at Windsor last month, will be high on the shortlist. The course and distance winning Oh This is Us brings plenty of experience whilst Carolus Magnus hinted at a return to winning ways at Newmarket last time. But TOTALLY CHARMING has looked progressive on the All-Weather this winter and may have more improvement in him this season.
RACE THREE
Manobo suffered his first defeat in six starts when headed late on at Meydan in March. We may not have seen the best of this Charlie Appleby-trained colt and he is fancied to take this step up in class in his stride. Pyledriver, the winner of this Group 1 last year will have plenty of supporters with Frankie Dettori taking over but HUKUM is selected to bounce back after not really getting the run of the race at Meydan last time.
RACE FOUR
Another super-competitive handicap but it might be worth taking a chance on GOOD BIRTHDAY. The Andrew Balding-trained gelding is only 1lb higher than when winning at Doncaster last summer and should progress from his Newmarker third last month. The hat-trick seeking Moktasaab will be popular despite a further increase in the weights whilst Love Is Golden could outrun his odds from near the bottom of the weights.
RACE FIVE
The second fillies’ Classic of the season has once again attracted a stellar field. The unbeaten EMILY UPJOHN oozed class when demolishing the field in York’s Musidora Stakes and It will take a huge effort to lower her colours. With The Moonlight was another emphatic winner when landing Newmarket’s Pretty Polly Stakes and she may well mount a serious threat along with Thoughts Of June who looked progressive when winning the Cheshire Oaks.
RACE SIX
Having won well on his reappearance at Doncaster DAWN OF LIBERATION disappointed in the Feilden Stakes at Newmarket, but Richard Hannon’s colt bounced back with a resounding success at Goodwood two weeks later. If he can build on that he could take all of the beating. With a 50% strike rate Ever Given will surely throw down a serious challenge, whilst the once raced Bass Player could be anything with improvement likely.
RACE SEVEN
Cazoo Ladies Day concludes with a tricky-looking seven-furlong handicap where any number are in with chances. Darkness has been slightly disappointing since arriving from France but his shrewd trainer will get to the bottom of him sooner or later. Top Secret has been improving with age and was unlucky not to make a winning reappearance but a chance is taken on ELDRICKJONES who could out run his odds on the best of his form. 10 10

EPSOM RACE SUMMARY
Blatant was very impressive when winning eased down at Leicester last month and, if he improves again, he may well do the business. However, he might not get his own way on the front end and has to give 5lb to ESTATE. Beaten less than two lengths at Bath on his second start, he is 8lb better off, when taking into account jockey claims, with the reopposing winner Commander Straker and may well reverse that form. Silencer is another to consider.

GREAT BRITISH BONUS SCHEME The Great British Bonus (GBB) offers multiple bonuses of up to £20,000 per eligible race for British-bred fillies and mares.
DID YOU KNOW? Epsom Downs’ catering team will use the following over the two days of this year’s Cazoo Derby: 1,400 pints of milk, 1,000 punnets of strawberries, 3,000 scones and 60kg of clotted cream!
1947 Older than the Derby by a year, the Oaks was the brainchild of Johnny Burgoyne, a soldier, playwright and politician who married into Lord Derby’s family. Burgoyne had passed on the lease for his Surrey mansion, the Oaks, to his nephew, the 12th Earl of Derby, and persuaded the nobleman to create a race over a mile and a half for three-year-old fillies in response to the St Leger, which had been founded at Doncaster as a two-mile contest for colts of the same age in 1776. The first Oaks, named after the nearby house, took place in 1779. The winner was Lord Derby’s Bridget.

REMEMBERING THE QUEEN’S OAKS WINNERS CARROZZA AND DUNFERMLINE
18
As we celebrate The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, we look back at two of Her Majesty’s five Classic winners during her 70-year reign – Carrozza and Dunfermline, who landed the Oaks in 1957 and 1977 respectively. Carrozza was foaled in 1954 and leased to The Queen by The National Stud. Sired by Dante, winner of the last wartime Derby at Newmarket in 1945, her dam was called Calash. Although only successful in one race, Calash was a full-sister to the great Sun Chariot, who won the Fillies Triple Crown of the 1000 Guineas, Oaks and St Leger in 1942 for King George VI, The Queen’s father. Trained in Newmarket by Noel Murless, Carrozza triumphed in only one of her three starts as a two year old, before making a winning reappearance in the Princess Elizabeth Stakes at Epsom Downs, which at the time was staged at the Spring Meeting and served as a Classic trial. On the back of that success she started favourite for the opening fillies’ Classic of the season, the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket, but could only manage fourth behind the Aga Khan’s Rose Royale, who she had previously beaten into second place at Epsom Downs.
Her first start of 1977, the year of The Queen’s Silver Jubilee, saw Dunfermline break her maiden tag in style as she took the Pretty Polly Stakes at Newmarket by four lengths under Willie Carson, who was riding her for the first time in his new role as Hern’s stable jockey.
Bookmakers were of the view that Rose Royale was the superior filly and she started the 11-10 favourite for the 1957 Oaks. Carrozza, with Lester Piggott in the saddle, was sent off at 100-8 - the longest-priced of The Queen’s two runners behind Cheshire Oaks winner Mulberry Harbour, who started at 11-4.
At Epsom Downs she was sent off at 6-1 and after making steady progress up the home straight she battled courageously in the final furlong to win by three quarters of a length from Freeze The Secret. Official duties prevented The Queen from being present at Epsom Downs, with The Queen Mother representing her.
Given the perfect Epsom Downs ride by Piggott, Carrozza took the lead a furlong out and looked set for an easy success as she went clear. A strong late challenge emerged from Silken Glider and she required all of the legendary skill of the “Long Fellow” to get Carrozza home to win by a short head.
After being unsuited by the slow pace when third in the Yorkshire Oaks in August, Dunfermline headed to Doncaster for the final Classic of the season, the St Leger.
As an overjoyed Queen came down to lead her winner into the famous winner’s circle at Epsom Downs, Carrozza proved herself unwilling to step forward. However, Her Majesty demonstrated her expertise as an outstanding horsewoman and led Carrozza forward to rapturous applause. Sadly a setback prevented Carrozza from running again, although her Oaks success played a major part in The Queen becoming Champion Owner in 1957.
Despite her status as a Classic winner, Dunfermline was sent off at 10-1 at Doncaster. The unbeaten Alleged, who had emerged as potentially the best colt of his generation over the summer and would go on to win the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe twice, was the odds-on favourite. When Alleged took the lead three furlongs out, it was only Dunfermline who could go with him, once again showing both stamina and courage as she wore him down to win by a length and a half.
Dunfermline was bred by The Queen and a daughter of 1967 Derby hero Royal Palace out of Strathcona. She was sent into training with Dick Hern at West Ilsley. Despite not managing to win as a two year old, Dunfermline showed great promise when runner-up in both the May Hill Stakes at Doncaster and Fillies Mile at Ascot.
Carrozza and Dunfermline – two great fillies who gave Her Majesty two wonderful days at Epsom Downs.

EPSOM RACE SUMMARY
In a competitive event the marginal preference is for OH THIS IS US, who caught the eye when finishing fourth at Chester last time and he is 1lb lower today. The veteran has a very good record at this track and he won the Group 3 Diomed Stakes at this meeting 12 months ago. Corazon Espinado also goes very well here and last year's winner should not be underestimated. Others to note are Excel Power, Fantastic Fox and Fireworks.

DID YOU KNOW? The Oaks was first run in 1779 when won by the Lord Derby-owned Bridget. The fillies’ Classic is a year older than the Cazoo Derby and takes its name from the Surrey mansion whose lease was passed on to Lord Derby by his uncle Johnny Burgoyne.

A RACE STEEPED IN ROYALTY 120 YEARS OF THE CORONATION CUP five British Classics that The Queen has not won. She came closest in 1953 when Aureole was runner-up to Pinza. The 1953 Derby was staged on a Saturday 6th June, four days after The Queen’s own coronation. While Aureole may not have won The Derby, his subsequent achievements mark him out as the best horse owned by The Queen so far. In 1954 he returned to Epsom Downs for the Coronation Cup and gained some compensation for his Derby defeat of 12 months earlier as he scored impressively by five lengths. He followed up with victory in the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot and enjoyed great success as a stallion, being crowned champion sire in 1960 and 1961. His progeny included St Paddy, the 1960 Derby winner. While Aureole is the only Royal winner of the Coronation Cup, it is a race that has been won by some of the all-time greats including Pretty Polly, Petite Etoile, Mill Reef, Time Charter, Triptych and Yeats. We are delighted to welcome DahlBury as the new sponsor of the race in 2022.
The Group One DahlBury Coronation Cup at Epsom Downs today achieves a notable milestone as it celebrates its 120th anniversary. Staged over the same mile and a half course as the Oaks and Derby but for horses aged four and older, the Coronation Cup first took place in 1902. The race was first run to celebrate the accession to the throne of King Edward VII, who enjoyed three victories in The Derby thanks to Persimmon (1896), Diamond Jubilee (1900) and Minoru (1909), as well as winning the Grand National at Aintree with Ambush II (1900). Edward VII was The Queen’s great grandfather and her only equal as sovereign in his passion for racing. In this year of Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee, The Derby remains the only race among the

PYLEDRIVER bids to defend his crown having toughed it out in this contest 12 months ago before finishing runner-up in the Hong Kong Vase in December. He suffered an interrupted campaign. The five-year-old didn't get the rub of the green when fourth in the Sheema Classic at Meydan and boasts strong credentials, despite this potentially being a stronger race than last year. High Definition finally put it all together when runner-up in the Tattersalls Gold Cup and he enters calculations along with Manobo, who commands plenty of respect dropping in trip.

DID YOU KNOW? Frank Buckle is the most successful jockey in the history of the Oaks, triumphant nine times between 1797 and 1823.
Imprudence’s victory in The Oaks in 1947 was the first time a horse trained overseas had won the race. Since the French horse triumphed 23 other overseas-based fillies have won the Classic, 14 of them from Ireland and nine of them from France.
1802 When trainer Robert Robson first won The Oaks in 1802 with Scotia, no one could have known he would go on to become the most successful handler in the race’s history. He won the fillies’ Classic 13 times in total, adding to his first victory with Pelisse (1804), Meteora (1805), Briseis (1807), Morel (1808), Maid of Orleans (1809), Music (1813), Minuet (1815), Landscape (1816), Corinne (1818), Pastille (1822), Zinc (1823) and Wings (1825).

Lester Few people receive such worldwide acclaim that they can be identified by their first name alone. Lester Piggott, who passed away peacefully aged 86 last weekend, was one.
Retiring from the saddle having won a record 30 British Classics, Lester will be remembered as one of the most iconic sports stars of his or any other generation.
Downs where his achievements remain unrivalled. A record nine Derby victories, six Oaks winners and an unprecedented nine Coronation Cups may never be eclipsed.

Lester with his first Oaks winner in 1957 and it required all the skill of the jockey known as “The Long Fellow” as she held on to win by a short-head.
A further tribute followed in 2019, when William Newton’s life-size bronze statue of Lester was unveiled by The Queen next to the Epsom Downs winner’s enclosure.
Petite Etoile was his next Oaks winner in 1959. Among the very best fillies to have graced the turf, the grey was owned by Prince Aly Khan and trained by Noel Murless and her prowess around Epsom Downs was reinforced when she returned to claim the Coronation Cup in 1960 and 1961.
This year The Jockey Club has honoured the world’s most famous jockey by renaming tomorrow’s Cazoo Derby as The Cazoo Derby (In Memory of Lester Piggott). Join us all today for a minute’s applause at 1.15pm to celebrate the life of Lester Piggott. Champion. Genius. Icon.
The success of Valoris in the 1966 Oaks marked the first time Lester linked up for a major triumph at Epsom Downs with Vincent O’Brien and the legendary Irish trainer would go on to supply Lester with four of his record nine Derby winners in Sir Ivor (1968), Nijinsky (1970), Roberto (1972) and The Minstrel (1977). Further Oaks success came for Lester on Juliette Marny (1975), Blue Wind (1981) and Circus Plume (1984), with his final ride in the fillies’ Classic coming on eighth-placed Marillette in 1993. The first of his record nine Coronation Cup wins came in 1953 on Zucchero, a talented but quirky horse who two years earlier had left Lester at the start on his first ever Derby mount aged 15. Further Coronation Cup victories followed on Nagami (1959), Petite Etoile (1960 and 1961), Park Top (1969), Roberto (1973), Quiet Fling (1976), Sea Chimes (1980) and Be My Native (1983). Roberto holds the distinction of being the last Derby winner to go on to Coronation Cup success. Lester’s sheer longevity in the saddle was also unsurpassed. Having ridden in his first race as a 12 year old boy, the first of Lester’s record 36 Derby mounts came as a 15 year old in 1951, before his final ride in the world’s greatest Flat race aged 58 in 1994, when he partnered 33-1 chance Khamaseen into fifth place. Put simply, “The Lester Piggott Years” began when Sir Winston Churchill was Prime Minister and ended with John Major inside 10 Downing Street. When he finally called time on his career, Lester was commemorated at Epsom Downs with the opening of the Lester Piggott Gates, officially unveiled by The Queen on Derby Day in 1996. Later that afternoon, Shaamit landed the premier Classic and was, appropriately, trained by Lester’s 31

Given the nature of his last two wins, MOKTASAAB is expected to land a third victory from as many runs. He kept on well for his Newbury success in April and defied a 7lb rise in the handicap at Goodwood, so there could be more to come. DID YOU KNOW? Four fillies were successful in both the Derby and the Oaks - Eleanor (1801), Blink Bonny (1857), Signorinetta (1908) and Fifinella (1916).
1844
KNOWN AS THE ‘DIRTY DERBY”, THE 1844 RENEWAL ENDED WITH AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE HORSE FIRST PAST THE POST, RUNNING REIN. IT WAS REVEALED THAT THE HORSE WAS NOT RUNNING REIN BUT IN FACT FOUR YEAR OLD MACCABEUS. RUNNER-UP ORLANDO WAS AWARDED THE RACE.

OAKS ANNIVERSARIES IN 2022 One of the very best Oaks winners of the 20th Century, Time Charter ended 1982 with victory in the Champion Stakes at Newmarket. Further Group One success came in the 1983 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot and the 1984 Coronation Cup back at Epsom Downs. 50 YEARS AGO (1972) - Ginevra handed a first Classic success to trainer Ryan Price, scoring by a length and a half under Tony Murray. Originally focusing on Jump racing, Price was one of Britain’s greatest dual-purpose trainers who also sent out winners of the Champion Hurdle, Cheltenham Gold Cup and Grand National.
10 YEARS AGO (2012) – Was became the fourth Oaks winner to be trained by Aidan O’Brien as she got the better of Shirocco Star by a neck in a thrilling finish. A 20-1 chance, Was gave jockey Seamie Heffernan a first British Classic success. Although she didn’t win again, Was remained a consistent performer at Group One level and her progeny at stud includes Concert Hall, a leading contender for this afternoon’s Cazoo Oaks. 20 YEARS AGO (2002) – Heavy rain resulted in the Oaks being run on soft ground, which proved very much to the liking of Godolphin’s Kazzia, who made all under Frankie Dettori. Subsequently successful in the Grade One Flower Bowl Invitational Stakes at Belmont Park in the USA, Kazzia went on to be a successful broodmare with her progeny including Group One winner Eastern Anthem. 30 YEARS AGO (1992) – Bill Gredley’s homebred User Friendly landed the Oaks on just her third start. It was a first win in the race for trainer Clive Brittain and jockey George Duffield. A fabulous summer then saw User Friendly go on to further Group One success in the Irish Oaks, Yorkshire Oaks and St Leger. She was also the narrow runner-up in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. 40 YEARS AGO (1982) – Time Charter won in race-record time for owner Robert Barnett, trainer Henry Candy and jockey Billy Newnes.

THE ROAD TO
THE CAZOO OAKS
WITH THE MOONLIGHT The Betfair Pretty Polly Stakes Newmarket Sunday 1st May
THOUGHTS OF JUNE The Weatherbys Bloodstock Pro Cheshire Oaks Chester Wednesday 4th May
With Godolphin landing the 2000 Guineas in both Britain and Ireland, it would be tough to not give Charlie Appleby’s charge a mention. A dual-winner as a two-year-old, progressing with each start, this smartly-bred daughter of Frankel could prove to be stronger than the market suggests. There was plenty of buzz around the John Gosdentrained Crenelle in the Betfair Pretty Polly Stakes but she easily dispatched the strong favourite and oozed class to score impressively by four and three quarter lengths lengths when stepping up to 1m2f for the first time. Unexposed over this trip but could be worth a go.
Beaten in all three starts prior to her win in the Cheshire Oaks, Thoughts Of June won at the fourth time of asking. A solid debut in what looked a hot maiden at Cork, she took a step back on her next outing at Leopardstown. However, Aidan O’Brien continued his dominance in the Cheshire Oaks as he held the 1-2 with Thoughts Of June and Above The Curve, with the form being reversed when the pair met at Leopardstown in April. The daughter of Galileo made virtually all that day when stepping up in trip and, this form has been boosted further with the runner-up landing the Group 1 Coolmore Prix Saint-Alary overseas.
EMILY UPJOHN Tattersalls Musidora Stakes York Wednesday 11th May
CONCERT HALL The Tattersalls Irish 1000 Guineas Curragh Sunday 22nd May
A sole winner on her only start as a juvenile, Emily Upjohn prevailed on debut at Wolverhampton. She then headed to Sandown Park under a penalty, where she blew her opponents away by nine and a half lengths lengths under the Frankie Dettori drive. The daughter of the almighty Sea The Stars was very strong in the market again in the Tattersalls Musidora Stakes where she where she justified her short price with another very impressive performance, kicking clear with ease to win by a wide margin. Although this looks to be her toughest task to date, she looks the class act of the field and is the one to beat.
40
The most experienced runner in the race is Concert Hall but by no means does this affect her ability to win. She contested a few of the top prizes as a juvenile, landing the Weld Park Stakes at the Curragh, while also running with credit in the Moyglare Stud Stakes and Fillies Mile. She justified favouritism after a near 200 day break in the Salsabil Stakes at Navan by a short head, before running a blinder to finish third in the 1000 Guineas. Given Aidan O’Brien’s incredible record in this race, it is hard to rule out this smart filly stepping up in trip.

EPSOM RACE SUMMARY
John Gosden and Frankie Dettori both have a fine recent record in this race and EMILY UPJOHN could be yet another superstar from the Clarehaven conveyor belt. An impressive winner of both starts this season, including the Musidora last time, the step up in trip should hold no fears being a daughter of Derby winner Sea The Stars and related to another in Harzand. Stablemate Nashwa arrives with a similar unexposed profile, whereas Tuesday brings solid Group 1 form to the table having placed in both the English and Irish Guineas. Running on behind her at the Curragh was Concert Hall, who gave every indication that she will relish this step up in trip. Thoughts Of June and With The Moonlight are not dismissed either.

EPSOM RACE SUMMARY
Dawn Of Liberation could be a tough nut to crack after his comfortable Goodwood success and he is not easily overlooked, but a chance is taken on OSCULA. She was all at sea on the Riyadh dirt last time and should be a lot happier back on turf now. Her placed efforts in Group company at Newmarket and Longchamp last year suggest that she can be very competitive at this level, and she won't mind any cut in the ground. Bass Player is the unknown quantity after one successful start.
WIN: OSCULA

SALEYMM has acquitted himself well in defeat this season, most notably when runner-up in the Lincoln at Doncaster, and the use of Harry Burns' 5lb claim gives him every chance of getting his head back in front. Mykonos St John arrives in decent form, having placed at Chester last Saturday, and he must enter calculations, while Orbaan also holds claims.
