GOODWOOD RACES 2020

FRIDAY 28th AUGUST OFFICIAL PROGRAMME

WHO TO WATCH Jon Lees, Ladbrokes Racing PR Manager, shares his thoughts on today’s racing 12.15 Chichester Observer Nursery Handicap Sibaaq runs here under a 6lb penalty after a convincing win at Beverley ten days ago, for which he has been put up 11lb. That makes him 5lb ‘well in’ in this contest. Mark Johnston horses typically progress the more they race and stable runners have a prolific record at Goodwood. On his debut Sibaaq finished sixth behind London Palladium, to whom he was conceding 3lb. Sibaaq now gets 5lb off that rival, strong grounds to expect the tables to be turned. 12.45 Ladbrokes Giving Extra Places Everyday Novice Stakes With five runs under her belt Quickstep Lady boasts the most experience, which she should use to her advantage to get off the mark. She has run two thirds and a second this year and was a beaten odds-on favourite at Windsor last time. However that race, in which the first two finished eight lengths clear of the third, was over 6f and the return to 7f should suit, with champion jockey Oisin Murphy in the saddle to ensure she gets the job done. 1.20 Ladbrokes Best Odds Guaranteed Handicap Trainer Richard Hughes hopes to strike while the iron is hot with Old News, a winner in first time blinkers at Salisbury just a week ago under today’s jockey Finlay Marsh. In the change of headgear he was able to take advantage of having dropped 16lb in the weights from his peak mark to win by two and three quarter lengths, for which he has been given an 8lb rise for future races. So he is 2lb ‘well in’ with Marsh taking 3lb off. 1.55 British Stallion Studs EBF Novice Stakes Group 3 winner Volkan Star and Floating Artist, rated in the 100s, won the last two runnings of this contest so it’s not unreasonable to expect another useful prospect to emerge from today’s edition. Lone Eagle, a son of Galileo who cost 500,000gns, is the obvious candidate. A Derby entrant, he ran a race full of promise when making his Sandown debut, in a race won by Too Darn Hot two years ago, running on nicely to go down by just a head with the third horse five lengths adrift.

2

2.30 Ladbrokes Get Your Daily Odds Boost Fillies’ Handicap With only one win in 17 starts Strict Tempo has regularly found herself vulnerable to less exposed opponents, but there was enough encouragement in her latest start to give her another chance. Slowly away at Sandown leaving her with plenty to do in the straight, she managed to thread her way through the field but all too late to trouble the first two home. On that evidence the extra furlong of today’s 1m race should benefit as long as Oisin Murphy can avoid any traffic problems, which is never guaranteed at Goodwood. 3.00 Ladbrokes Watch Racing Online For Free Handicap Being a colt by Dubawi out of 1,000 Guineas winner Sky Lantern, who was bought back at the sales for 625,000gns, a novice race at Catterick might not have been the expected setting for Noonday Gun’s first victory. Yet only three races into his career there is still scope for him to make his mark in handicaps. He stepped up two furlongs to get off the mark by seven and a half lengths, for which he was put up 10lb by the handicapper so under a 6lb penalty he is 4lb ‘well in’ for this quick reappearance. The further he went, the better he looked at Catterick, so a try at 2m may reveal more potential if he can cope with the burden of 10st 1lb in soft ground. 3.30 Ladbrokes Handicap The 11-year-old Pettochside has come a long way down the weights as he has got older but remains competitive despite his years, particularly at Goodwood where he has won six times. He secured his 14th career win at Windsor just two starts ago but couldn’t follow up under an extra 6lb at Salisbury. He has been given no more leeway by the handicapper here but Kieren O’Neill teamed up with trainer John Bridger to win this race two years ago and that is taken as a positive sign here. 4.05 Ladbrokes Supporting ‘Children With Cancer’ UK Apprentice Handicap Alba Del Sole could go well here if turned out again quickly after a slow start cost her at Chelmsford yesterday, provided she can avoid the kind of traffic problems that hindered her chance at Bath on her penultimate start. Having won off a mark of 46 in June, she has improved with nearly every run and would have gone very close at Bath 13 days ago under her 7lb claimer had she not been repeatedly checked. Up another 2lb, the more experienced Pierre-Louis Jamin does the steering this time.

Sibaaq took a huge step forward in his development when getting off the mark at Beverley earlier this month, but softer ground isn't sure to suit Mark Johnston's charge under a 6lb penalty, and perhaps LONDON PALLADIUM can strike for a yard threatening to hit top form. Second on ground with some cut at Chester last time, the two-year-old sets the standard with a rating of 79 and may improve for the step up in trip. Rommel is also noted.

Win: London Palladium

2019: NO CORRESPONDING RACE LAST YEAR STEWARDS NOTED: STRANGE BREW:Following its run on 21/12/2019 it was reported that the horse lost a shoe.

Race Summary Greycoat made a promising start to his racing career when third over this trip at Chelmsford in October and he warrants plenty of respect on his return to action, but QUICKSTEP LADY's race fitness and more experience could see her through. She didn't look quite pacey enough when tackling 6f on good to firm ground at Windsor latest and stretching back out in trip on a softer surface should do the trick. Smuggler runs for the first time since being gelded and also has a squeak on his seasonal reappearance.

Race Summary LONE EAGLE was touched off by a head over this trip on debut at Sandown but the experience gained is unlikely to have been lost on him and he's taken to go one better this afternoon. Zakaria steps up in trip as he bids to build on his debut effort over 7f and could take closer order, while any money for Richard Hannon's newcomer, Clay, would also be worth noting.

Race Summary OTI MA BOATI handles varying ground conditions and bounced back to form on reappearance for William Haggas when successful at York last month. The three-yearold has gone up 6lb for that, but was held in high regard during her two-year-old career and could rate higher still. Lady Lynetta's recent Haydock triumph was boosted when the runner-up was successful on the Knavesmire last week, while Strict Tempo is another interesting contender but most of her best form is on quicker ground.

2019 WINNER: RED STRIPES (USA) 7 8 7 Gavin Ashton 3-1 (Lisa Williamson) 6 ran STEWARDS NOTED: SOMETHING LUCKY:Following its run on 13/8/2020 it was reported that the horse reared as the stalls opened.

EQUIPPED is backed to build on some fine recent efforts and make a return to the winner's enclosure off the same mark as when rattling the crossbar at Wolverhampton last week. The veteran course-and-distance winner Pettochside can never be ruled out at this venue and placed off this rating at Salisbury last time, while John Bridger's track-and-trip winners Firenze Rosa and Shani warrant plenty of respect, with the latter beaten only a length off this figure at Lingfield earlier this month.

Race Summary ALBA DEL SOLE failed to land a blow after a slow start at Chelmsford yesterday, but she had been running consistently well before that and could be considered an unlucky loser when second earlier in the month at Bath having been denied a clear run at a crucial point. She may be worth another chance today. Daring Guest has gone close on his most recent outings, finishing second at both Windsor and Lingfield, and he is respected along with Ahorsecalledwanda.
