GOODWOOD RACES 2020

SATURDAY 29th AUGUST OFFICIAL PROGRAMME

WHO TO WATCH Jon Lees, Ladbrokes Racing PR Manager, shares his thoughts on today’s racing 1.15 Ladbrokes Giving Extra Places Every Day EBF Fillies’ Novice Auction Stakes Crazy Luck built on a solid debut at Windsor to run out a comfortable winner of a maiden at Salisbury. That victory was recorded over 7f but Rod Millman’s filly had the race in the bag at the furlong pole so the drop back to 6f here should be no disadvantage. In another boost to her claims, the partnership with champion jockey Oisin Murphy is retained. 1.50 Ladbrokes Prestige Stakes With Billesdon Brook, the 2018 1,000 Guineas winner, among the former winners, this Group 3 prize is often a stepping stone to Group 1 honours. That is the direction Billesdon Brook’s trainer Richard Hannon hopes to be heading with Happy Romance. The filly has already banked £177,000 in prize-money for connections from winning the Weatherbys Super Sprint and the Goffs UK Premier Yearling Stakes and now black type is the goal. Her wins so far have been at 5f and 6f but her trainer rates her so highly she is expected to continue the run over 7f too. 2.25 Brian Chattaway Celebrating 50 Years At Ladbrokes Handicap Oh This Is Us recorded his last win this time last year and now could be the time for the seven-year-old to strike again and add to career winnings of more than £626,000. Despite a slight dip in form from his peak, he continues to run consistently well and has been given a chance here by the handicapper who has dropped him to 103. That is 2lb lower than the mark he won off at Chester last August, beating Alemaratalyoum with whom is now 4lb better off. He also has course and distance-winning form which is always an advantage at Goodwood. 3.00 Ladbrokes March Stakes A small but select field has one more chance to put forward a case to run in the St Leger in this recognised trial for the final Classic of the season. The filly Maid Up took the same step two years ago and another female Cabaletta is the choice to advance her Classic credentials. Being out of a French St Leger winner, staying should be her forte, and her second place behind Enbihaar over course and distance during the Qatar Goodwood Festival was boosted when the winner went on to capture the Lonsdale Cup at York last week.

3.35 Ladbrokes Celebration Mile A welcome return for one of the best horses in training in Benbatl who should have too much class for these opponents on his first start since February. He makes a slightly earlier start to his European campaign than last year when he won the Group 2 Joel Stakes by five lengths since when he has proved he is as adept on dirt as turf with a third place behind Maximum Security in the mega-rich Saudi Cup which has lifted his winnings beyond £5 million. He posted his one bad run on heavy ground at Ascot in last year’s Queen Elizabeth II Stakes and, provided there is no repeat of those conditions, the horse who ran the great Winx to two lengths should be up to securing his 11th win from 22 starts. 4.10 Ladbrokes Get Your Daily Odds Boost Handicap Singing The Blues goes for a four-timer here and a 5lb rise may not be enough to stop him if he can get things all his own way in front again. He has done a lot of his winning at Bath but is proven at this 1m6f trip and under jockey Daniel Muscutt has not finished outside the first two placings in five starts together. 4.45 Ladbrokes Best Odds Guaranteed Handicap Lawn Ranger is back to try to win the race he captured 12 months ago and after a back to form win at Chester last time there is every chance he can do it. Connections will want to forget his last visit to Goodwood when he was hampered early and was never able to get into the prominent position he favours. That was in a higher grade race during the Festival and when dropped in class last time he was able to dictate from the front to make all. A 2lb higher mark than a year ago may not inconvenience him. 5.15 Ladbrokes Supporting ‘Children With Cancer UK’ Fillies’ Handicap Although still a maiden Eastern Star has shown enough in four starts for Tony Carroll to suggest she will shed that tag before long. She has been ridden by an inexperienced apprentice in two of her runs in England but when professionally partnered she went down by a neck at Windsor. She kept on well when fourth at Bath last time over a slightly shorter trip and back at 6f she can go close under David Probert.

2019 WINNER: EPSOM FAITHFULL 2 8 11 Charlie Bennett 8-1 (Pat Phelan) 8 ran

Race Summary LULLABY MOON was well fancied for the Super Sprint at Newbury when finishing down the field on that occasion. However, she had won impressively here over 5f on debut and the change of stable to Ralph Beckett could see her get back on the right track. Crazy Luck won well at Salisbury on her second outing and is expected to be in the mix along with Spirit Of The Bay, an interesting newcomer for Clive Cox, and Rosemary And Thyme.

Win: Lullaby Moon

Danger: Crazy Luck

The connections of the winner, if qualified under the Rules of the Plus 10 bonus scheme, will share a prize of £10,000.

GREAT BRITISH BONUS SCHEME The Great British Bonus (GBB) offers multiple bonuses of up to £20,000 per eligible race for British-bred fillies and mares. 9

Race Summary HAPPY ROMANCE looked better the further she travelled when successfully trying 6f for the first time at York nine days ago and Richard Hannon's filly could claim a fourth career success. The two-year-old handled an ease in the ground well on that occasion and could claim some valuable black type here. Pomelo couldn't have been more impressive when making a winning debut at Newbury last month, while Isabella Giles lost her unbeaten record at Ascot recently but won't mind switching to 7f.

Race Summary Magical Wish appears the obvious starting point having been raised only 2lb for his narrow victory over this trip at Doncaster, though it might be worth taking a chance on Stuart Williams' ALEMARATALYOUM. The selection is proven at this track and will relish any juice lingering in the ground. Mick Channon's Listed winner Milltown Star is worth a market check on his seasonal bow, while the progressive Breath Of Air is also expected to show up well.

IN MEMORY OF

John Dunlop John Dunlop, who sent out more than 3,500 winners from his Arundel stables in West Sussex, was a man who embodied the spirit of Goodwood, Dunlop was crowned Champion Trainer in 1995 and sent out a total of 10 British Classic winners, including two Epsom Derby victories with Shirley Heights (1978) and Erhaab (1994). A previous Director of Goodwood Racecourse, John enjoyed nearly 200 winners here, starting with Storm Bird taking the 1967 New Ham Stakes and including one of his career highlights when the Pat Eddery-ridden Posse landed the 1980 Sussex Stakes. In addition to these successes, John trained Sheikh Mohammed’s first Group race winner here at Goodwood when Hatta won the Molecomb stakes in 1977.

‘This place is close to my stable and close to my heart. I have raced all over the world and I think it is the most beautiful racecourse in the world.’ John Dunlop

Race Summary CABALETTA, who saw off some useful rivals when landing a Listed contest at Newbury on her penultimate start, lost nothing in defeat when second to Enbihaar in a course-and-distance Group 2 last time. That rival has since franked the from with victory at York so everything points to a bold showing from Roger Varian's filly. Subjectivist disappointed at York most recently, but his earlier efforts offer plenty of encouragement, while Celtic Art wasn't disgraced when reappearing over 10 furlongs here and the step up in trip may suit. Table Mountain completes the line-up following an impressive win in an Ascot handicap last month.

RACE FIVE

Regal Reality had Positive held in third when running out an impressive winner of the Sovereign Stakes at Salisbury earlier this month and could have plenty more to offer here. DUKE OF HAZZARD was disappointing when finishing eighth on that occasion, racing far too freely, but is chanced to bounce back at a track where he has a fine record and could successfully defend the prize he plundered 12 months ago. Any rain would boost the chances of Century Dream, while the globe-trotting Benbatl is foolish to ignore on his first outing on UK soil this year.

Race Summary FRONTISPIECE only found a progressive rival too good at Newbury on soft ground earlier this month and wouldn't be scoring out of turn after a solid start to his 2020 campaign. Carrying top weight makes life tougher, but he seems incapable of running poorly currently and stays this trip well. Mr Chua has taken time to come to hand but battled bravely to strike at Chester when last seen, while recent Sandown hero Seinesational is also noted under a penalty.

There didn't appear to be any fluke about JUNKANOO's course victory at the Glorious meeting, despite being 3lb out of the handicap, and Gary Moore's gelding is open to more improvement after that success. Lawn Ranger returned to winning ways at Chester in a tight finish earlier in the month which featured Kryptos, who was half-a-length third, and the pair are likely to be competitive once again, while Exec Chef has the ability to get involved.

2019:NO CORRESPONDING RACE LAST YEAR

Yukon Mission has been hammering on the door and looks sure to be in the mix again, while Must Be An Angel could be competitive off a mark of 72 on her handicap debut. Dubai Elegance and Porto Ferro are just a couple more with claims in a competitive finale, but a chance is taken on SWEET PURSUIT. An ever-decreasing handicap mark means she is now 3lb lower than when runner-up on heavy ground over C&D last September and the booking of Oisin Murphy suggests that a big run is expected.

Win: Sweet Pursuit
