ON BEHALF OF THE DIRECTORS, SHAREHOLDERS AND STAFF, I AM DELIGHTED TO WELCOME YOU BACK TO NEWTON ABBOT FOR OUR SEVENTH FIXTURE OF THE 021 SEASON. TODAY’S AFTERNOON FIXTURE IS FOLLOWED TOMORROW WITH AN EVENING MEETING, USUALLY OUR LADIES EVENING.
We have on offer £50,836 with seven competitive races this evening. I would like to thank all the Owners with us today and those that will be at home watching on Sky Sports Channel 415 and ITV for running their horses. I have sent you all a digital racecard via Weatherby’s which you should have received yesterday. We have increased the number of badges for the Owners to 3, this has been agreed in line with the latest Government guidelines and with the Safety Advisory Group and the local Environmental Health Officer. A copy of the digital racecard has been sent to the ROA and hopefully posted on their website. I would like to thank all our sponsors today: Talk Tidy Marketing, St Austell Brewery, TRP The Racing Partnership, Sky Sports Racing and Attheraces. The past 13 months have been extremely difficult for everyone in the country and most businesses. All racecourses have their own stories to tell and Newton Abbot Racecourse is no different. Last season when we were about to start racing Covid-19 raised its ugly head, this meant losing eight meetings. Jump racing started a month later than the flat on 1 July. Newton Abbot started on 7 July and we managed 10 meetings all behind closed doors and therefore no crowds, no hospitality and no happy faces. A huge effort was made behind the scenes to get the course compliant with Covid regulations. The weighing room was moved to the betting hall. Owners when allowed were moved upstairs in the Paddock Suite. Move forward to April 2021 and we have hope with the roll out of vaccines. However, from a business point of view, we have racing back but no crowds, no in-house catering, and little income. The four point plan to get back to normal will for almost all racecourse rely on the removal of the 2m distancing rule. We are planning for crowds and smiling faces, but there remains a nervousness. Since our last meeting on 11 June I have been in talks with the Safety Advisory Group and the Environmental Health Officer regarding the possibility of crowds returning, it has been agreed that the meetings on 21 & 22 June together with the meetings on 2 & 12 & 18 & 26 July we will continue to have a small crowd of 500. The meeting on 26 July could however be a normal meeting depending on what the Government say on 19 July. Once again, I thank all the Owners that supported Newton Abbot last season and we hope that continues this year. We certainly hope at some point soon that we can all get back to normal operations as safely as possible. Please enjoy the racing this evening. Best wishes

STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

Trainer Dan Skelton was the winner of the feature race on the card on the 11th June will in the Class 2 Racing Partnership Handicap race with Hatcher. The Newton Abbot Racecourse On Facebook Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle started off a fabulous evening on racing. The Paul Nicholls-trained Kilmington Rose went got favorite back off to a good start when surging clear of the other 6 runners to make all, albeit not the most fluent as some of her hurdles, she was an easy winner of at a short price of 4/6. Nostalgica finished 21-lengths behind in second for James Davies but was obviously no match for the run-away winner who has subsequently raised been rasied 8lb after a solid performance in the opener. There was another classy performance

onthe second race on the card in the 0-100 Watch Free Race Replays On attheraces.com Handicap Hurdle over 5 2m1f. The Brian Barr-trained Manor Park recorded just his second win over hurdles in 18 starts, when much-improved on his recent performances, and won with a lot in hand to score by 13 lengths. Patrick Cowley claimed 3lb and held this horse up in midfield before making smooth headway to get on terms with the leaders 3 furlongs out and went clear two furlongs out, being eased down towards the finishing line at 8/1. The gelding has been raised 14lb for this success over Youvebrokenmydream so he could struggle next time out off a mark of 105.

HATCHER won our feature Class 2 handicap chase
It was almost an identical ride for Page Fuller in the next race as she booked her place in the winners enclosure on Solstalla for the David Weston yard. The 9-year-old was another comfortable winner on the day and this mare went clear 2 out after given a patient ride in midfield the whole race, eventually winning by 6½ lengths in the Talk Tidy Marketing Mares’ Handicap Hurdle at a bigger price of 11/1. Second in the race to become Newton Abbot’s top-trainer is Paul Nicholls and he bagged himself another second place with Staley Stanley who outrun his odds, while 8/11F Sainte Doctor was unable to back up his win around here on the 5th May meeting. The feature race on the card saw 9/2 shot Hatcher come home in front at 9/2 for the Dan Skelton stable in the Racing Partnership Handicap Chase. Another one on the day to come from off the pace, Harry Skelton gave this horse a brilliant ride and went third 2 out, before being niggled along after to get close to the leaders, and readily went clear on the run-in to score by 6 lengths. The wel-supported Coole Well could only finish in fourth at 6/4F.
The second favourite to land on the evening was Shortcross Storm who landed the 2m½ Sky Sports Racing Sky 415 Handicap Chase, jumping 13 fences in total. Off a mark off 100, the Chris Honour-trained 6-year-old made all, setting a brisk pace throughout, and put 6 lengths between himself and any other rival with one circuit to go. 3lb claimer Bryan Carver shook the reigns up entering the home straight and despite making an error two-out, he ran on gamely to win well after a bolt front-running display. Tactics came into play for the 3-runner newtonabbotracing.com Novices’ Chase over 3m2f where the outsider of the small field came home to win at 6/1 The Katy Price-trained Premier D’troice won well after keeping on gamely in the dying strides to win by a short head over Ballymoy in second, while Eglantine Du Seuil fell 2 out as the 10/11F, but looked a tired horse. The final race to complete the evening was the newtonabbotracing.com Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race over 2m1f. In this bumper we saw the biggest price winner on the card as Holerday Ridge won at 25/1, making rapid headway through the field from about 6f out , and despite showing signs of greenness when edging left, she ran out a good winner by 2½ lengths to conclude another excellent evening of racing here.
