ON BEHALF OF THE DIRECTORS, SHAREHOLDERS AND STAFF, I AM DELIGHTED TO WELCOME YOU BACK TO NEWTON ABBOT FOR OUR ELEVENTH FIXTURE OF THE 2021 SEASON.

We have on offer £64,472 with seven competitive races this afternoon. I would like to thank all the Owners with us today and those that will be at home watching on Sky Sports Channel 415 for running their horses. I have sent you all a digital racecard via Weatherby’s which you should have received yesterday. We remain having the number of badges for the Owners to 3, this has been agreed in line with the latest Government guidelines and with the Safety Advisory Group and the local Environmental Health Officer. A copy of the digital racecard has been sent to the ROA and hopefully posted on their website. I would like to thank all our sponsors today: Cath King we wish you a very happy birthday, Willian Hill, Talk Tidy Marketing, The Racing Partnership and The Newton Abbot Bookmakers with a tribute to the Honourable Mike Bolitho. Since our last meeting on 12 July I have been in talks with the Safety Advisory Group and the Environmental Health Officer regarding the possibility of getting back to normal following the Government’s announcement of getting back to normal. We have agreed that the meeting on 26 July will be the last fixture where we have a limited crowd of 500. We will therefore have a month to reconfigure the racecourse to go back to some sort of normal. The meeting on 21 August will be a normal meeting but still be protecting our Jockey’s. Further news of those protocols we have to adhere to, will be shared when we have finalised those. However we will have our facilities back for the general public. Once again, I thank all the Owners that supported Newton Abbot last season and we hope that continues this year. We certainly hope at some point soon that we can all get back to normal operations as safely as possible. Best wishes PATRICK MASTERSON MANAGING DIRECTOR

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

LAST MEETING REVIEW |MONDAY 12TH JULY 2021

1

Last Monday was very much a day for favourites and punters will have gone home happy with four out of seven favourites obliging. However the day was not a day to remember for everyone and our thoughts go out the connections of Theo who was sadly fatally injured.

2

Nick Schofield had one of the easiest winners he’s likely to remember as the 1/5 shot Small Bad Bob never came out of a canter to win the first. The eventual winning distance of the Visit attheraces.com Novice’s Handicap was just over six lengths but that doesn’t justify just how easy it was. Nick sat quietly in behind the leader and never even asked for an effort and instead just picked off his toiling rivals to bring home the first favourite of the day.

no-one could have predicted the end result and what looked set to be a great match between two talented 4 hurdlers ended with a tragic result after Theo went wrong after the 5th hurdle. Coole Well took the prize but it certainly wasn’t the way they would have liked to have won.

Next came the Tigers Selling hurdle, which saw two rivals that could hardly be separated in the betting. Theo for the Doctor Richard Newland team was sent off the marginal outsider of the two and it looked set to be a straight boxing match between him and the even money favourite Coole Well. Unfortunately

Harry Fry got himself a winner in the third, overturning the Paul Nicholls trained Kilmington Rose. Black Mischief was having his second start after a 741 hiatus from the track. His third behind Proschema was an encouraging enough effort and he was certainly the unknown quantity in the race. Kilmington Rose is a

newtonabbotracing.com

DIV INE TARA LEADING THE FIELD IN THE FINAL RACE OF THE AFTERNOON

solid hurdler in his own right and for Black Mischief to dispose of him by an emphatic 23 lengths means Harry Fry might have a very talented horse on his hands. The fourth race was a controversial one and Phoneix Dawn was awarded the race despite not being first passed the post. Invincible Wish had been dropped 4lb and was returning from wind surgery, which looked to have finally been the key too opening his account after a positive ride. Invincible Wish had been in front a long way and hung left in the final furlong, which eventually resulted in the stewards awarding the race to short priced favourite Phoneix Dawn. Darling Du Large found just enough to give him his first win since entering the national hunt game. He has been frustrated to watch for punters as he can often look the winner but once asked the question has nothing left to give. Those who stuck with him on Monday will have been overjoyed to see him just keep his head in front.

The penultimate race of the day saw the biggest shock when the 33/1 outsider Candyman Can gave us one of the gamest performances you’re likely to see. He looked beaten after taking them along but despite Joly Makers best efforts to pull clear the Laura Hurley trained gelding just kept finding more for James Best. Laura suggested after the race that Candyman Can enjoyed the softer conditions underfoot and the race was a brilliant spectacle. The favourite was disappointing after finding two runs in two days all too much. Mattie Ross made sure the bookmakers went home empty handed, after she duly romped home in our final race of the day. Daniel Hiskett looked supremely confident when winning what looked a relatively poor race and she probably did not need to improve too much to win. Div Ine Tara ran a much better race from the front and appreciated the change in tactics. She should be picking up a race of her own shortly if she continues an upward trend.
