WELCOME
IT HAS BEEN A WHILE SINCE WE HAD A WELCOME MESSAGE IN A RACECARD AT UTTOXETER – I FEEL LUCKY TO HAVE BEEN HANDED THE BATON BY OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR DAVID MACDONALD AS A ONE OFF!
As sad as it is not to have you all at the racecourse today, I really hope you still manage to enjoy the meeting with the ITV and Sky Sports Racing coverage from the comfort of your own living rooms. We have been kindly supported again this year by Marston’s Brewery – perhaps a few of you will enjoy a drink at home in front of the telly. The grounds team and I couldn’t be more excited about today – racing really is the focus – and it’s great to have been so well supported by owners, trainers and stable staff. Thank you, we really hope your horses run well and enjoy their day out. We have one of the highest quality and most competitive Midlands Grand National fields in recent years – it should be an exciting spectacle - and the shoulder races are also highly competitive. To be able to offer over £202k in prize money on the card, in conjunction with decent ground, really has attracted some of the best. I would like to thank our fantastic grounds team for all of their hard work in getting the racecourse and site ready. Like the brilliant army of stable staff, they work in all weathers to provide the best racing surface possible. There have been added challenges with furlough, tricky weather and staff changes which they have dealt with admirably. I feel very lucky to be working with such a brilliant group of people headed by our newly promoted Head Groundsman John-Paul Jakes who looked after the site throughout the first lockdown. I hope you have a successful day with your bets and enjoy the racing – fingers crossed it won’t be too long before we see you back at the racecourse! ELOISE QUAYLE CLERK OF THE COURSE

STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: ‘‘‘‘‘ Selected to win the race. ‘‘‘‘• Good chance of being placed. ‘‘‘•• By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims. ‘‘••• Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. ‘•••• Can be given little or no chance.
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non handicap races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

RACE SUMMARY
THEME TUNE wasn’t all that fluent at Carlisle but still came out on top and likely has plenty more to offer as his jumping improves. This sterner test will suit him and he can get the hat-trick up on his handicap debut. Saint Dalina is a solid alternative, while Steal A March retains potential for Nicky Henderson.

RACE SUMMARY
Competitive stuff but ST BARTS gets the vote to enhance his fine record under Rules to 4-7 having confirmed the promise of his chasing debut when making all at Newbury in December. With further improvement on the cards, he could be tough to pass. Shanty Alley continues to thrive and heads up the possible dangers, ahead of Ask Me Early and Eclair Surf.

2020: MAIN FACT (USA) 7 10 7 Mr Fergus Gillard 5-1 (David Pipe) 15 ran DECLARED RUNNERS 10 Tongue Strap worn by No. 2, 4, 7, 8, 9, 10. Sheepskin Cheek Pieces worn by No. 7, 10.
The day of all days since 1969 The race of all races the Marston’s 61 Deep Midlands Grand National is back for another year and our showpiece event promises to be yet another moment to remember. With a total pot of £202,000 on offer across the race card – an impressive £120,000 of which will be up for grabs in the feature race alone. The race is run over four miles and two furlongs, making it the second longest race in the National Hunt calendar after the Aintree Grand National. In 1969, winner Happy Spring was coming to the end of a fine career of which had seen him be one of only six horses ever to have beaten the legendary Arkle. Happy Spring and jockey Ken White galloped into the record books by becoming the first ever winner of the Midlands Grand National. In the decades since, the winner’s circle has never welcomed the same horse twice with 49 different winners taking first prize. And there have been some distinguished victors along the way. In 1975, Rag Trade, under the guidance of John Burke won the event and a year later put off Red Rum’s third victory in the Grand National by winning at Aintree. In 1986 The Thinker stormed to victory and just over 12 months on joined racing’s elite by winning the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
Just over a decade later in 1997, Seven Towers dashed hopes of racegoers celebrating a local victory as he defeated Lord Gyllene. The second-placed horse was owned by Staffordshire businessman and self-made millionaire Sir Stanley Clarke and his wife Lady Hilda. Whilst the boss of St. Modwen Properties narrowly failed to taste victory at his local course of Uttoxeter in the Midlands Grand National, his New Zealand bred gelding gave Sir Stanley his racing high point by winning the Aintree Grand National three weeks later. The victory of Lord Gyllene at Aintree is remembered as much for the circumstances surrounding the bomb threats and re-staging of the Grand National on the following Monday, as for his win itself. Then in 2010, racing royalty in the shape of legendary jockey AP McCoy and trainer Jonjo O’Neill enjoyed success with Synchronised. Once again, the horse showed success in the Midlands Grand National is a stamp of class as it went on to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup two years later. Between 2011 and 2014, trainer David Pipe, broke records winning the race four years in a row with Minella Four Star, Master Overseer, Big Occasion and Goulanes. Whilst in 2016 Fergal O’Brien’s much-loved Chase The Spud stormed to success in the final furlong. Who will be crowned the 2021 winner of the Marston’s 61 Deep Midlands Grand National?

RACE SUMMARY
Jonjo O’Neill holds a strong hand in next month’s Grand National and can collect in the Midlands version too with TIME TO GET UP, who had plenty left in the tank when scoring at Wincanton and remains very much at the right end of the handicap after just three chase starts. Irish-challenger Screaming Colours is another progressive sort and feared most, with Highland Hunter much respected too.

RACE SUMMARY
Gary Hanmer has his string in good form so CAPE FAIR could be the answer having performed with credit in a couple of C&D handicaps towards the end of 2020. Recent chase winner Gaia Vallis may provide the chief threat ahead of Lady Cylla, who has changed yards since her Stratford second in November.

GENERATION GAP and Frisson Collonges both remain with potential over the larger obstacles and may be the pair to concentrate on.
