Where has this year gone? It’s just 10 weeks to Christmas! True enough we have been busier than usual and with my wife Julia going back to teaching horse riding full time, I have noticed the difference she made. Most of the estate agents are still going and making a living on the sale of properties for investment, especially in Marbella where the properties are still worth noticeable money even though the prices have been slashed. On the other side of the coin, Spanish investors seem to be buying properties in London to get their capital out of the Euro Zone. Well, “c’est la vie”, as they say. I suppose it is another step in the right direction. Altough we have stepped up the circulation, last month’s magazine seems to have gone just as always, the difference is that we did not get any complaints about not finding Web Express Guide. Do not forget the magazine is what we publish on our internet portal. We are still the only website that is printed and distributed free.

DID YOU KNOW? Oprah Winfrey has been crowned the highest female earner in Hollywood having taken home an estimated $165m (£102m) last year. Britney Spears is next and Taylor Swift completes the top three. As the 007 film franchise turns 50, Pierce Brosnan has been revealed as the deadliest James Bond ever with the highest number of kills (76) out of the six actors to take on the iconic role. Press Association The average price of a home in Britain fell 0.4% in September to £159,486, down 1.2% on the year. Homes in London worth more than £10m are seeing a slowdown in price rises, up 1.8% in the three months to August against 3% in the quarter to May. Halifax To avoid developing high blood pressure, simply include yoghurt in your diet. Researchers in the US analysed 2,000 people, and found that those who got 2% of their calories from yoghurt were a third less likely to develop hypertension over a five-year period than those who did not. Times Did you know that 2,976 prisoners in England and Wales are allowed to watch Sky TV at taxpayers’ expense as part of an “earned privileges” scheme? Telegraph The governor of Spain’s central bank warned that the 2013 austerity budget would not be sufficient to meet the deficit target. But how dirty is dirty? A survey when the law was first introduced showed that motorists in Russia agree that a car is dirty when the number plate isn’t visible! in my opinion

A personal interview Count De La Perrelle,

I have been lucky enough to meet some very interesting and influential business people over the years and it is my intention to interview from time to time some of the noteworthy people whom I feel have independently given their time, business comprehension and acuity of mind to help bring significant change or influence to the Costa Del Sol and our area in particular. This month I kick off by asking Edwin Gladstone, pictured, the founder of Web Express Guide, about his business experiences here on the Costa del Sol. When and why did you start business here on the Costa? Having created the first Mortgage Shop in the UK, a very successful business, I became disenchanted with the politics of the 80’s & 90’s which resulted in the severe recession that followed. I had even contacted 10 Downing Street expressing my fears which in fact materialised with the first historical loss of “bricks & mortar” values and homes being repossessed at a rate of never before. I sold the business and decided to move to Spain for a better quality life because Julia, my wife, told me it was then a nice and a safe country in which to raise children. 10

in my opinion

Here I realized there was a real need for an effective Medium dedicated to foreign nationals on the Costa. In order to learn the market, I worked as a sales person for The Reporter magazine but, despite my successful contribution, a commission payment dispute convinced me to start my own business two years later. I love creating from new ideas and even if I knew little about the internet (no one else seemed to know much either at that time), I decided to create a Portal for the Costa del Sol. It was a failure because no one seemed to know it existed. This is when I decided to print the Portal and distribute it free as a magazine. I never looked back since. One thing lead to another and today I still have the only Internet Portal that invested over â‚Ź1.5 million in promoting its web address in print over the years.

What makes you different from all the other media? I thought it is obvious we print our website while others put their publications online, a substantial difference. I said at the outset that Internet is the future and it seems I was right, unfortunately it is not being used quite as it should because again greed seems to take over some people. Perhaps you will understand better what I mean when you actually realize that my website is one that makes the most appearances on Google searches and that most of my contents, including advertisers, appear on the first pages of Google searches. I don’t follow. What do you mean? Well, for a start our database goes back some 15 years, our present website is not just any cheap website, it took 3 years to develop and it has been designed and programmed to provide the results I am describing. So in the first place you need a fairly substantial investment to create a similar machine and I need to

stop feeding my database for the next 15 years before you can catch up with it. Do you aim at a certain market? How do you control this when the internet is worldwide? The publication is not a magazine it is a printed portal, this is why it has to be portable and not a heavy table top at the same time it must contain different articles and topics at monthly frequency. The publication is produced in a good quality paper, print, images and contents within a reasonable price. This means to say that it is intended for a quality market while still retaining its commercial power. We then control the distribution making certain that the publication is only available in quality locations and locations frequented by the right quality readers. This is why you will never see Web Express Guide in seedy little bars or similar. The articles we publish, and I remind you online as well as print, are originals and provided exclusively for us by a number of authors such as myself for a start, Count De La Perrelle, a secret writer (Prickly Pair), Chevalier de Fleury and others. What of the future? Fifteen years after its infancy, Web Express Guide is still here, live and kicking. I have seen media of all types and colours appear and disappear, some have even tried to copy what I do. They have gone! I expect others will follow in the future because in the first instance most do not understand or appreciate the size of this rather small multinational market, others do not have a clue of what publishing really means and entails while others believe that they can master the internet with a cheap website designed to impress the public with its appearance but not really doing the job. Unless the Mayans were right, I expect Web Express Guide will see many more Christmases yet whether with me at the helm or someone who takes over

I hope that you all had a great summer! This recipe is especially good for a late summer evening served with a jacket potato and green salad. This is a recipe to cook outside or with a grill pan inside.

Brush the fish lightly with oil. Season the outside of the fish with generously with salt and the pepper, to taste. Grill the trout ,turning once, about 5 minutes per side. Set aside for 5 minutes before serving.

Dressing

- 2 tablespoons white wine vinegar - 2 teaspoons finely grated orange zest (from 1 small orange) - 1/2 teaspoon Sea salt salt - Freshly ground black pepper to taste - 4 tablespoons Walnut oil

S

Directions

Heat an outdoor grill or preheat a grill pan to high. Pat the fish very dry with paper or kitchen towels. Season the inside of each trout with salt and pepper, to taste. Stuff each fish with a quarter of the butter, shallots and tarragon. Tie the fish closed with kitchen twine or thread the fish closed with a skewer.

Meanwhile make the dressing: Put the vinegar, orange zest, salt and pepper in a medium bowl. Gradually whisk in the oil to make a dressing. Snip off the string or remove the skewer and serve fish drizzled with some of the dressing. Serve on a bed of warmed orange and grapefruit segments

ACCORDING TO LINEA DIRECTA, 3 OUT OF 4 ACCIDENTS RESULTING IN INJURY OR DEATH ARE CAUSED BY DRIVER ERROR Whenever we find ourselves in a difficult or dangerous situation when we are driving we only have a fraction of a second to take a decision and carry it out correctly. Consequently, when drivers take the wrong decision, the number of accidents resulting in death or injury is tripled, as figures show that 73% of accidents are caused by drivers making a bad decision, compared to 27% in which they acted correctly. This is the main conclusion of the study “Decisionmaking when driving” in which 174,000 accidents resulting in injury or death have been analysed. This means that in the last 4 years, nearly 130,000 accidents resulting in injury or death could have been avoided if the drivers involved had been able to assess the dangers on the road correctly. The most common errors are due to drivers being distracted, joining roads incorrectly, turning badly, illegally overtaking and not maintaining a safe distance between the vehicle in front. As for

types of road, Línea Directa’s report confirms that conventional roads are the most dangerous, due to the fact that 76% of accidents take place on them. On dual carriageways and motorways, the most common types of accident caused by driver error are rear-end collisions and vehicle crashes, mainly due to sudden braking and the switching of lanes.

Driver Profile Men aged between 18 and 24 who have held a driving licence for less than two years and the over 65s are those most likely to be involved in accidents due to driver error. The former because they have a lower perception of risk and the latter because they have lost certain skills. On the other hand, women aged between 35 and 64, who have held a driving licence for 15 years or more are those who take the best decisions.

Ghouls &

It’s that time of year again when the end of summer really hits home. When the children of all ages try ‘Trick or treating’ and adults find time to dress up in silly costumes. - By De La Perrelle In Spain Halloween is still a fairly new phenomenon and is known as Noche de los Muertos (Night of the Dead), or El Dia de los Muertos. (Day of the Dead), or if you are in the farthest northwest of Galicia, Noite dos Calacús (Night of the Pumpkins). Interestingly the north of the Country tends to celebrate Halloween more than the rest of the Country. The reasons for this are in fact quite ancestral. There is some evidence that many regions, especially those in northern Spain had Celtic-speaking inhabitants who arrived around 2500-3000 years ago in Iberia and mixed with the indigenous population and made their way into many of the remote regions of the North and the Northwest thereby creating their own cultural region there. In fact in these particular regions today there is a growing Celtic revival and this is proving popular with holiday makers from Celtic loving countries.

Halloween: This developed from an ancient pagan festival celebrated by Celtic people over 2,000 years ago in the area that is now the United Kingdom, Ireland, and north-western France. The festival was called Samhain (pronounced SOW ehn),

20

www.webexpressguide.com

which means “summer’s end.” The festival marked the beginning of the dark winter season and was celebrated around November 1st. In the 800’s, the Christian Church established a new holiday on this date, All Saints’ Day. All Saints’ Day was also called All Hallows’. Hallow meaning saint, or one who is holy. The evening before All Hallows’ was known as All Hallows’ Eve, or as it came to be abbreviated, All Hallow e’en. A couple of hundred years later, the Christian Church added All Souls’ Day on November 2nd. This day was set aside for people to pray for friends and family who had died. People made many of the old pagan customs part of this Christian holy day. Some people put out food for their ancestors, or they left a lantern burning in the window so that ghosts could find their way home for the night.

Dressing up: All the costumes and funny faces

have Pagan Celtic roots in Samhain. One theory is they dressed as ghouls to fool evil spirits let loose on October 31, so they would not be possessed by these spirits. Another theory is they dressed in costume just for fun, and to make mischief. Yet another theory is that faeries would dress as beggars asking for food, which would also be the origins of the “trick or

& Ghosts treat” practice. After the Catholic Church replaced Samhain with All Saints Day, people would dress as dead Saints and devils for their festivities. Trick or Treat: This practice might have had its start in the legend from Celtic days that faeries would dress as beggars going from door to door asking for food, and those that did not show hospitality would be harshly dealt with by these magical faeries. On All Souls Day, the poor would beg for “Soul Cakes” (sweet pastries) in exchange for prayers for their departed loved ones, expediting their passage to heaven. Sometimes costumed groups would sing and perform in exchange for food, ale, or money.

‘Jack o’lanterns’: This hails from the Irish folk tale of Jack, who tricked the devil, but was not allowed in heaven or in hell. The devil, taking pity of Jack, gave him an ember to light his way on his eternal walks on Earth, carried in a hollowed out turnip. Because of their size and availability, pumpkins were substituted for turnips in the United States. Ghost Stories: Ghost stories probably have their roots in the original Celtic belief that the spirits

main feature

of the dead (both good and bad) wandered the Earth on October 31 (Samhain). Later, when the church replaced Samhain with All Saints Day and All Souls Day, the dead were remembered, and spoken about. In the United States today, they are used to amuse and scare children (and some adults) to get them in the “spirit” of Halloween. It is interesting to note that many years ago there wasn’t even a hint of costumes, strange rubber faces and the latest in witch fashion here in Andalucia but now it seems that the Halloween phenomena has really caught on. It seems that Halloween is becoming increasingly considered harmless fun rather than a satanic festival. Even the supermarkets have jumped on the Halloween bandwagon and are using it as an excuse to get the customers in, looking to buy ‘huesos de santo’ or ‘bunuelos de viento’ that are typically eaten at this time of year. It seems that Halloween is now just another countdown rather like bonfire night in the UK to the inevitable Christmas period. Whatever it is, enjoy.

and shoes Weapons of seduction and fetishism. - By Benjamin Friman What woman can be said not to like these items? Nowadays they are just as important as the dress itself! Leather, suede, crocodile, ostrich, iguana skin all possible combinations have a distinct place in my new collection. Shoes may or may not match match the handbag, however stilettos with curved heel, strips in black leather or olive green, lamb suede, three colour combinations and a touch of platform, are made to match handbags using identical colours. The high boots and mid cut boots in my collection are intended to suit someone who exceeds all imagination. These are for the woman with a sure step, they are shoes created for those women who wish to be taken immediate notice of; shoes that will boost even more the appearance even when not posssible; shoes that will distinguish the wearer. It is my intention that the shoes I created be functional and timeless. Shoes that can be worn at the office. And, why not, at dinner or a gala as well! My true obsession was to create a shoe that will simply be adored in a shape ingeniously studied that that can be worn at any time of the day without noticing its height; a real and powerful fetishist weapon. Well studied, my collection with its summarily pampering colours and shapes will take you to conclude that they are intended to please and make others dream of whoever wears them. I give them the name vertigo not because of height but for the desire to feel a strong sensation of nervousness knowing that your shoes are unique, unrepeatable and very exclusive. Just one pair per style and colour created just for you. Do come and visit us.

Ever Thought You May Be Paying Too Much Tax?

By Richard Alexander Dip. PFS

You may be inclined to argue that paying any tax at all is paying too much but then of course our society needs tax revenue to function. We have all read about the rights and wrongs of tax evasion and tax avoidance and of course there is a huge difference, the former being illegal and the latter being totally legitimate but sometimes appears to be in the realms of the very wealthy only. I think it is reasonable to say that no one should pay more tax than they need to and that it is prudent to ensure that you do not pay more than is necessary. In this way, you can sleep at night without the concern that the taxman may be knocking on your door any minute but also safe in the knowledge that you have made your contribution to society. So how can you make sure that you are paying the right amount of tax? Well that is likely to involve a closer look at where you keep your capital and what your sources of income are. With regard to capital, whether you are Spanish or UK tax resident, there are different types of investment that can enjoy either a tax-free environment or a tax-deferred basis. It is important that your investments are able to grow with little or no tax being applied and that it is only when your “take some money out” that you need to account for the tax due on any gain being realised. This will mean that you will need to keep only a minimum amount on deposit earning interest, as interest is taxable, whether you intend to use it or not and that the majority is sheltered in an appropriate investment wrapper. With regard to income, your tax residency will again have a bearing and if you are one of those people who have been living in Spain for a number of years but are still paying taxes in the UK, you might find that you are paying more tax on your income than you need to. This could be particularly true if you are in receipt of pension annuity income. In the UK every penny

will be assessable for income tax but in Spain, only a proportion would be and the resulting tax payable would quite possibly be lower than in the UK. With various authorities and financial institutions sharing information more than ever before, no longer is it safe to try to “sit under the tax radar” and hope that you don’t get found out. It is much better to take some advice and ensure that your financial affairs are in the best shape they can be and this includes looking at the tax implications as well. I know that planning finances can be pretty boring stuff, so why not make it a bit more interesting by combining it with a visit to the Homes, Gardens and Outdoor Living Show in Estepona on 9th& 10th of November. You will find us on Stand no 6 and you might just pick up a few good ideas for your home while we have a look 13045 RAFP Web Express Magazine Ad REV_RAFP 06/07/2011 at your finances.

So, you wanna talk about it? What is it about a recession crisis that brings out a whole bunch of people who are suddenly experts on how we can dig ourselves out of the current economic situation? And why is it these so smart executives and so called leaders of everything come up with conferences ideas. Who is that smart arse who comes up with “hey everybody is so desperate to survive that maybe we should gather them all in some city in Spain, charge them and give them advice on everything from surviving the crisis to saving tax and to saving the world.” Perhaps if these so called experts spoke up a bit earlier on they might have saved themselves the trouble now. The recent one I stumbled upon the other day was “The Business and Eco-environmentalism”. From what I gathered, if businesses think to the future and spare a thought for the environment all will be fine. Well, excuse me! I think everybody’s footprint has shrunk since the recession. Well, for a start, packaging and plastics have surely gone down a couple of sizes; let’s face it ,surely poor people are certainly buying less food and packaged items and as for fuel consumption I don’t suppose they drive much more, certainly not at the current petrol prices and yes, you have guessed it, I suppose aviation fuel pollution has dropped off a tad.

Now for the futuristic future technology, the thing we should be looking to, Bio- monitors will analyze your sleep pattern and wake you all at the exact time so as to maximise the feel-good factor. Really! I don’t know about you, but at whatever time I wake up, it’s never enough sleep. So analyze that! Oh! Not slept enough hours? Well thank you Bio-monitor, I would have never worked that one out by myself. Also in the future there will be showers with preferential heights & temperature. Do you think the smart inventors took into account Pedro at the end of the street hitting a water main while laying paving slabs? What about the wireless electricity touch pad etc. etc. which sounds great until Pedro turns off the whole town’s electrics while starting up the feria lights. Then there are the futuristic travel flying cars. Virtual travel, that’s all very well but after speeding fines, petrol or whatever fuel they use, would the environment really benefit? Oh and there’s also talk of “Mass Tourism” which is great until a few baggage handlers in France go on strike and when they all want to park their hired cars in non existing car parks, but never mind why don’t we all get together and have a big conference or Mass Debate, if you prefer. So here’s to the future! Until Next month anyway...

the book

the films People Like Us Director: Alex Kurtman Starring: Chris Pine, Elizabeth Banks, Olivia Wilde, Michelle Pfeiffer, Mark Duplass. Drama

Sweet Tooth By Ian McEwan Serena Frome, the beautiful daughter of an Anglican bishop, has a brief affair with an older man during her final year at Cambridge, and finds herself being groomed for the intelligence services. The year is 1972. Britain, confronting economic disaster, is being torn apart by industrial unrest and terrorism and faces its fifth state of emergency. Set mostly in London during the early 70s, it is told (in hindsight from the present day) by Serena Frome, a bishop’s daughter brought up in the genteel “walled garden” of a cathedral precinct. We learn in the first paragraph that she was sent on a secret mission 40 years ago, and that it ended badly for her and her lover. Almost a hundred pages pass before we discover the precise nature of this mission; a more leisurely prelude than usual, but just as mesmerizing as its predecessors, with every page adding some new hint that deepens or adjusts our sense of what is going to be at stake in Serena’s story. Canning dumps Serena with sudden and (to her) inexplicable cruelty, disappearing out of the story for a long time, and as Serena takes up her career at MI5 other themes emerge. 32

Sam is a workaholic who is forced to drop everything in New York and return home to attend his father’s funeral. Sam’s girlfriend, Hannah accompanies him on the trip only to return to New York after a few short days – when Sam throws a self-centered fit following the discovery that his father left $150,000 to an estranged daughter.

The Expendables 2 Written and directed by Sylvester Stallone. Starring: Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Jason Statham. Action

This is an improvement over its predecessor in almost every way, building a more satisfying structure around the tolerable but middling foundation of the original – so while this sequel continues the original’s disposition of being both highly flawed and fun, it still feels as if there’s a better Expendables film waiting to be made.

The Dictator Director: Larry Charles Starring: Sacha Baron Cohen, Anna Faris, Ben Kingsley, Sayed Badreya, Megan Fox

ACTION/COMEDY/ROMANCE

Sacha Baron Cohen, Academy Awardnominated and Golden Globe-winning writer/performer and creator of such indelible characters as Ali G, Borat and Bruno, now steps into the autocratic and very shiny shoes of General Admiral Haffaz Aladeen, a dictator who risks his life to ensure that democracy will never come to the country he so lovingly oppresses, in The Dictator.

HoroscopeS Your future as foretold by the Sabinillas gipsy LIBRA

(September 23-October 22)

October 7 to 21 will give you strength and a strong sense of purpose. Now more focused and determined to achieve your goals, Mars will allow you to harness the wild energy of the Uranus moon and initiate positive changes in your life, instead of letting change happen to you. This will be most strong for the few days around Monday the 15th of October with Mars trine Uranus in the sky. This energy favors the brave and taking a few risks now should pay off. This also applies to relationships as you will be giving off a very exciting kind of attractive energy

SCORPIO (October 23-November 21)

The October 29 Full Moon in your birthday week is a good omen for your year ahead in general but especially with regard to your home and family, close relationships and career. With this moon highlighting your Saturn transit already mentioned, plus your Pluto transit, the theme is one of substantial transformations. Hard work, persistence and determination will be very well rewarded.

SAGITTARIUS

(November 22 - December 21)

Mars from the 21st of October until early November is going to drastically increase you desire to get ahead in all areas of life. You should be feeling more aggressive, assertive and pumped up, but now is not the time to pick fights or take risks. It is time for measured responses to any provocation.

CAPRICORN

(December 22 - January 19)

The Sun could have you butting head with people as they seem to get in the way of your progress. They may be reacting to what they see as your abrasive or egotistical nature at the moment. It’s not the best time to force your will onto others or push too hard at achieving your goals. Better to take a more defensive approach.

AQUARIUS (January 20-February 18)

The luck continues for you guys with a trine from the Sun between October 2 to 13. This confidence building transit comes on top of your longer term growth oriented Jupiter transit and culminates on Tuesday the 9th of October with the Sun trine Jupiter in the sky. This makes for you a wonderful pattern called a Grand Trine, which can promises riches.

PISCES

(February 19-March 20)

Friendships, groups and gatherings are a focus of growth, change and development all month, and sometimes it’s plain sailing, sometimes a rollercoaster, but the underlying vibe is positive progress, even with a rather challenging new moon on the 27th. Romance feels fun and contented around the 10th, and deepens in intimacy after midmonth.

38

www.webexpressguide.com

ARIES

(March 21-April 19)

You could be a bit cocky at the moment with Jupiter bolstering your ego, but you have good reason, because this is a time of life where you should be feeling proud and expecting the best for yourself. Sun trine Jupiter on Tuesday the 9th will certainly have you feeling exuberant and larger than life, this is the perfect time to enjoy yourself and try your luck.

TAURUS

(April 20-May 20)

Mercury is sextile to Venus for nearly all of October and is the major influence for you. This combination is very sociable, light-hearted, and generally pleasant, giving an appreciation for beauty and art. You are most affected by this friendly influence from October 12 to 20 and it peaks with the exact transit on Tuesday the 16th.

GEMINI

(May 21-June 21)

The Sun brings smooth sailing and harmony to all your relationships. You can much more easily forge ahead with your personal and career goals now. Growth certainly is a big theme for you at the moment with Jupiter turning retrograde. All the very best of this transit can be expected on Tuesday, the 9th of October, with Sun trine Jupiter in the sky bringing exceptionally good fortune.

CANCER

( June 22-July 22)

From October 2 to 13, the Sun may bring a few challenges from power trippers trying to get the better of you. With no other influences during this time, the key to dealing with this is fairly straight forward. You just have to back down a bit and wait for a more opportune time to push ahead with your personal and professional goals.

LEO

( July 23-August 22)

The luck continues for you guys with the Sun sextile from October 2 to 13. This culminates on Tuesday, the 9th, with Sun trine Jupiter triggering your extremely fortunate and growth oriented Jupiter transit. I would be taking full advantage of this great opportunity to make substantial gains in any area of your life.

VIRGO

(August 23-September 22)

Next up Mars from the 21st and this is more challenging to deal with. Mars is urging you to act in a more aggressive way, to take risks and have your way no matter what. For a few days around Sunday the 28th, Mars opposite Jupiter in the sky is going to aggravate this feisty energy which will have you feeling boisterous and cocky, but now is not the time to push your luck or take risks.

VIRTUAL HUMOUR

Q. What did the police officer say to the midget complaining that someone picked his pocket? A. I can’t believe someone would stoop so low. The boss was complaining that he A guy makes an emergency call to his vet. does not get enough respect, so he “Please come quickly! My dog has placed a sign on his door that said “I swallowed a condom!” am the boss!” About ten minutes later, he calls back. Later, when he returned from lunch, “Nevermind! It’s okay now, I found another he found that someone had taped a one!” note by the sign saying: “Your wife called, she wants her sign back!” A customer sent an order to a distributor for a large amount of goods totalling a great deal of money. The distributor noticed that the previous bill hadn’t been paid. The collections manager left a voice-mail for them saying, “We can’t ship your new order until you pay for the last one. “The next day the collections manager received a collect phone call, “Please cancel the order. We can‘t wait that long. ” One afternoon, in a land where Eskimos and Scotsman run into each other on the highway fairly often, an Eskimo was driving down the road when his truck breaks down. Shortly after, a friendly Scotsman pulls off to the side of the road to help him. Upon inspecting the smoking engine, the Scot proclaims to the Eskimo, “I looks like you blew a seal!” Abashed, the Eskimo replied, “Yeah! Well... you guys screw sheep!” A man went to apply for a job and after filling his application he waited anxiously for the outcome. “We have an opening for you!” said the employer. “Oh great!” he replied. “What is it?” “It’s called the door”
