SPANISH BANKS NOW REQUIRED TO REPORT ALL PAYMENTS TO SELF-EMPLOYED
For many years, Spanish banks only flagged financial transactions exceeding €3,000 Amounts below this threshold typically required no identification, making them easier for customers to access without raising questions Withdraw €2,000 or €2,500, and the process was seamless, but crossing the €3,000 mark triggered extra scrutiny, including documentation and forms
However, the €3,000 threshold is no longer a safe zone, at least for the self-employed. A recent policy change has dismantled this longstanding rule Spanish banks are now obligated to report every single payment made to self-employed workers, no matter how small
A Game-Changing Decree
The change was quietly introduced through a royal decree that also includes adjustments to corporate tax rates for multinational companies The result? Spain’s tax authorities, commonly known as Hacienda, now have access to a granular level of detail about financial transactions conducted by self-employed individuals Payments made through traditional banking methods or mobile platforms, such as the widely used Bizum, are subject to the same reporting requirements
Under this new framework, banks must submit monthly reports covering all transactions involving self-employed clients The move has sparked widespread frustration among freelancers, entrepreneurs, and small business owners, many of whom are already grappling with economic challenges
WORKERS
Eduardo Abad, president of the Professional Association of Self-Employed Workers (UPTA), expressed his concerns, highlighting what he views as an ongoing pattern of targeting this essential segment of the economy. “Spain seems determined to make life harder for self-employed workers,” he said, adding that while other Western European nations support entrepreneurship, Spain appears to take the opposite approach, piling on administrative burdens instead.
Challenges for the Tax Office and Banks
Critics of the policy question whether Hacienda has the capacity to handle the massive influx of data generated by these new reporting requirements With over 3 3 million self-employed individuals in Spain conducting millions of daily transactions, the volume of data could overwhelm both tax authorities and banking institutions
Some argue that this level of oversight is unnecessary and impractical, especially when the government could instead focus its resources on tackling corporate tax avoidance by multinationals As one disgruntled freelancer put it, “Why not target tax havens instead of small business owners just trying to get by?

Season’s ice-cream cake
Method:
Step 1
445g (21⁄2 cups)
Sunbeam Mixed Fruit
65g (1⁄2 cup)
Sunbeam Slivered Almonds, toasted
60g (1⁄3 cup) icing sugar mixture, sifted
2 tbsp brandy, sherry or liqueur of choice
1 orange, rind finely grated
1 lemon, rind finely grated
1 tsp mixed spice
2L vanilla ice-cream, softened slightly
200g dark cooking chocolate, chopped
Sunbeam Glacé Cherries, to serve
Chocolate shards, to serve
Grease a 1 5L (6 cup) pudding basin and line with plastic wrap, allowing it to overhang the side. Combine the mixed fruit, almonds, icing sugar, brandy, orange rind, lemon rind and mixed spice in a large bowl. Set aside for 1 hour to macerate
Step 2
Add the ice-cream to the fruit mixture and stir until well combined. Spoon into the prepared pudding basin and smooth the surface. Cover with plastic wrap and place in the freezer overnight to set
Step 3
Place chocolate in a heatproof bowl over a saucepan of simmering water, making sure the bowl doesn’t touch the water. Stir until melted and smooth Set aside for 10 minutes or until cooled and thickened slightly
Step 4 Dip the base of the pudding basin in hot water and turn the icecream cake out onto a serving plate. Spoon over the cooled melted chocolate Top with glacé cherries and chocolate shards Serve immediately

Cuando, hace bastantes años ya, vi por primera vez el cortometraje de Miguel Becerra, titulado Teatro de sombras, en el festival de cine de San Roque, me quedé profundamente impactado y no pude levantarme de la butaca del cine en muchos minutos
La película me transmitió una desazón y un desasosiego tan grandes que me quedé atrapado en esa oscura trama de amor, sexo, frustraciones y miedo que protagonizan Umberto, Luis y Giovanna, dando forma a un triángulo amoroso bizarro y aberrante, que llega, incluso, a agredirte fieramente las sensibilidades. Me pareció un cortometraje valiente, osado, transgresor, oscuro, perturbador e hipnótico que callaba mucho más de lo que mostraba en su corta, pero intensa duración
No sabía entonces que, tras esa película de breve formato, se ocultaba una novela tremenda y siniestra, apasionante y adictiva, donde se desarrollaban con mucho más espacio las historias de los tres personajes principales y aparecían otros, policías en su mayoría, que completaban el círculo de la trama de una forma genial e inteligente
Esa novela fue escrita por Miguel Becerra en 1994 y permanecía, manuscrita a bolígrafo, en una carpeta blanca que se fue ajando con el tiempo hasta que hace unos meses llegó a mis manos como si fuera un tesoro escondido, que pedía a gritos ser descubierto y desenterrado. Me pedía mi admirado Miguel que me peleara con ella, que la pasara a ordenador y la corrigiera a fondo.
Yo la leí casi del tirón antes de acometer la ardua tarea de escribirla en el ordenador, desentrañando la no siempre fácil caligrafía de mi amigo Miguel, corrigiendo, sobre la marcha, todos los pequeños errores de diversa índole que iba encontrando en la densa trama Posteriormente, la leí por segunda vez, eliminando elementos redundantes y adelgazando algunos párrafos demasiado abigarrados e indigestos, pero sin alterar en modo alguno la esencia de la novela ni cambiar un ápice la filosofía de la obra
No creo que sea tarea del corrector entrar a saco en el libro que corrige ni que pueda notarse, en modo alguno, su presencia en la novela a la que ha sido invitado meramente para eliminar defectos e inconveniencias únicamente. Así, mi labor ha sido la de limpiar, fijar y dar esplendor a una obra ya de por sí portentosa y certera, rotunda y en muchos aspectos irrepetible. Miguel nos dejó abruptamente hace un año, dejándonos huérfanos de su talento. Ahora saldrá su libro de manera póstuma para rendiré el más hermoso de los homenajes. No duden en colaborar.
