And this is it! As one might say; the end of 2012 and the start of 2013. Was it good? Was it bad? It has got pretty quiet since the first week in November, but on the whole we have not had a bad year despite the crisis and despite the lack of cooperation from the bank. But then, even if I might say so myself, we are unique in what we do, it does work well and we are most competitive in price. We even increased our distribution! We do have a pretty good website and in 2012 we started to try and apply some of our technology to offer professional websites to others. We are most encouraged by some of the results therefore we have created a department specifically for it. Enough with shysters exploiting businesses! Although this is different with private numbers and addresses as they do not change much from year to year, nevertheless the world population currently stands at 7 billion and, allowing for an average number of annual deaths, it is increasing at the rate of 80 million each year, never mind the countless web pages on the net. Consumers know what they want and what services they are looking for, but they have no idea who provides them and where, this is why they look at and consult the internet, Google being the most popular search engine. For this reason every single business, large or small needs to have its own internet appearance, but what is even more important is to be found amongst the billions of pages within the net. Not only that, but unless it appears on the first page of a search, it is a known fact that the second page is skipped all together by the searcher. This is another good reason why you need to hand over a business card, a leaflet or advertise in print to make yourself and your web address known to consumers, the difference being 10

Accident black spots: the 15 most DANGEROUS Spanish roads Drivers on the M-40 in Madrid, the Avenida Diagonal de Barcelona or the Puente del V Centenario in Seville, must be aware of the fact that they are travelling on one of the three most dangerous urban areas in the country. This is the main conclusion of the study “Black spots: traffic accidents in Spanish capitals” carried out by Línea Directa Aseguradora in which more than 1.2 million motor vehicle accidents in provincial capital cities in the last six years were analysed. With myself and Julia being so busy and Cocomo so popular, I finally managed to reserve a table; I had been meaning to do so for a while and find out for myself all the good things I had been hearing about, the only drawback was that on the night it was not just raining, it was pelting down. Clearly this means that we had to be accommodated inside. While the decor and the ambiance are neat, modern and classy with very effective lighting, I can imagine how beautiful and magical it must be when it is possible to sit in the terrace. Have you ever wondered what makes his restaurant so popular? It was a full house, even in midweek! I then understood the wisdom of booking in advance, as a matter of fact I was lucky to manage to reserve my table for two. A friendly welcome was very warming and we soon got absorbed into the atmosphere created by the other diners who were all, without exception, clearly having a good time while enjoying their food and drinks. Having been given the opportunity to settle down and feel at home, we were soon approached by the waiter to take our order for the drinks, which were followed by the menu. Although I am not allowed alcohol, I can tell you that the wine list was good with plenty to choose from. It was not one of those endless menus, it was explained that everything on the menu was of the highest quality and from fresh produce of that day, especially prepared for that evening. The selection was certainly intended to please practically every palate. I ordered a Prawn Cocktail. It is not permitted to take photos but I hope you will take my word for it when I tell you that it was extremely well presented and quitar it certainly out of the ordinary. This was followed by the Thai Pork, which again was gifted with the same presentation. It is impossible to describe the taste, can I just say that, in my humble opinion, I think the chef belongs in one of those 5 star restaurants in the heart of London, Julia was more conservative in her choice and ordered the Scottish Smoked Salmon 16

I could not handle any more, I could not eat anything more but Julia did venture to order a dessert which she reluctantly let me try and all I can remember is that it was delicious and almost ordered one for me too. What was remarkable is the price. I thought that the 2 courses at €14 was superb value for money. The menu is very cleverly presented to give you the opportunity to have additional plates or courses if you so wish with the additional cost clearly shown. As I said, in my case the 2 course were more than I could handle, I really could not have eaten another thing after that. A modern pleasant ambiance, a good vibrant atmosphere, superb food accompanied by a good service and all at a remarkably much lower than anticipated cost. It is of no wonder that Cocomo is always full. I certainly recommend it but do make sure you book your table in advance, do not wait until the last minute.

Viva la Diferencia Christmas and New Year in Spain - By Count de La Perrelle. Goodness, another year almost over and 2013 is looming! I hope it is an incredible year for everyone. For those of you who intend to enjoy the Costa del Sol during the Christmas and New Year period here are a few interesting facts and snippets of information to help you with the Spanish way of celebrating Christmas and New Year. Christmas in Spain is quite a delight. The holiday period starts up in mid-December and it does not
seem to finish until after January 6th. There is the huge multi-billion euro lottery ‘El Gordo’, where you can spend several hours glued to the TV watching small children pulling wooden lottery balls out of a big revolving cage, only to discover that you haven’t won El Gordo yet again this year. There are also the fantastic nativity scenes, (Look out for the crapper, El Caganer this little figure has been defecating in the background of Nativity scenes since
at least the 17th century and the tradition has stuck in Spain and parts of Southern France). In Spain most people go to Midnight Mass (La Misa del Gallo). The Mass of the Cockerel, apparently a cockerel crowed the night that Jesus was born. On this important Eve most families eat their main Christmas meal before the Midnight Mass service. Lots of food is the order of the day and turkey as the main course meal of the dinner. The traditional Spanish Christmas dinner is ‘Pavo Trufado de Navidad’, this is turkey which is stuffed with truffles. Mushrooms can be used instead. The popularity of Turkey as a Christmas dinner item has declined over the years and although the use of pork has increased the Spaniards have recently had a deep likening for Lamb roasts. In some other parts of Spain seafood is the most popular meal, especially in Galicia, which is a region in the north west of the country. Lots of different types of seafood are eaten, including lobster and the small edible crabs. As the midnight bells ring out on Christmas Eve (‘Noche Buena’), from the churches people walk through the streets carrying torches, beating drums and playing all sorts of instruments. It becomes a real social occasion. The Spanish seem to feel that this night is really very special and not meant for sleeping. Traditional sweets such as Turron and Marzipan are very popular and given as gifts and enjoyed by all.
Balthazar, who has black skin and a black beard (or no beard!) and wears a purple cloak. He is the King of Tarse and Egypt. Balthazar represents the gift of Myrrh that was brought to Jesus. Myrrh is a perfume that is put on dead bodies to make them smell nice and showed that Jesus would suffer and die.
Melchior, who has long white hair and a white beard and wears a gold cloak. He is the King of Arabia. Melchior represents the Gold brought to Jesus. Gold is associated with Kings and Christians believe that Jesus is the King of Kings.
Gaspar, who has brown hair and a brown beard (or no beard!) and wears a green cloak and a gold crown with green jewels on it. He is the King of Sheba. Gaspar represents the Frankincense brought to Jesus. Frankincense is sometimes used in worship in Churches and showed that people worship Jesus
Christmas day tends to be a quiet time of gathering thoughts and for enjoying family and it is not until the 28th of December which is the ‘Day of the Innocent Saints’ (Día de los Santos Inocentes) that things start to liven up. This is a day of celebration which seems to be exclusively Spanish. It is a day which is very similar to April Fools day in other parts of the western world where people try to trick each other into believing balmy and asinine stories and funny jokes.
Apparently if you manage to trick someone then you have the right to call them innocent (Inocente). The 28th is also the day when people remember the babies that were killed on the orders of King Herod. New Years Eve (‘Nochevieja’ or ‘The Old Night’) is the most exciting night of all. The Spanish celebrate this night with real enthusiasm and seem to party all night. There is one special tradition which is to eat 12 grapes with the 12 strokes of midnight. It seems that each grape represents a month for the coming year. If you manage to eat all 12 grapes, which is quite a feat I can tell you, (I have tried it), then you are said to be lucky for the whole New Year. For some of the younger people the festival of the Epiphany is the most important time as it is on the 6th January that the three Kings or Wise men brought gifts to the new born child. This is the twelfth night of Christmas and is commonly known in Spain as the ‘Fiesta de Los tres Reyes Mages’ the party of the three magic Kings. Children do have some presents on Christmas day but the majority of the family gifts are given and opened at Epiphany. Many children believe that the Kings bring them the presents and they write letters to the Kings on the 26th of December with their requests. On the evening of the 5th they often leave their shoes on the window sills or the balconies and sometimes under the Christmas tree in the hope that they will be filled with all sorts of presents. Children leave a gift for the Kings in the form of a glass of brandy for each King and perhaps a satsuma or some nuts. Because the Kings will travel on camels a bucket of water is often left out. If the children have been naughty then bits of coal made out of sugar will also be amongst the presents. A special cake called ‘Roscón’ is eaten at Epiphany. Roscón means ‘ring shape roll’. Roscón can be filled with cream or chocolate and contain a little gift. Add to this the increasing number of information sharing activities which are going on between authorities, financial institutions and even utility companies, data is stacking up and being used to identify tax dodgers wherever they may be. So the answer to my question really depends on whether you have been declaring all of your income for tax or have been hiding under the radar as so many people have tried to do over the years in Spain. It is only a personal view, but I think those days are largely behind us when it was unlikely that tax dodgers would be found out – as time goes by, quite the reverse will become the norm and Big Brother is indeed watching! As always, if you want to sleep at night, then to declare what you should for tax purposes has to be the right way forwards and if in the past you have not done so, then it is far better for you to put your hands up now and take some advice rather than holding your breath in case your file is the next one to be scrutinized and waiting to be found out.

In many parts of Spain the centre piece of Christmas dinner is the “pavo trufado de Navidad” or Christmas turkey stuffed with truffles. (Mushrooms can be used instead). Recipe • • • • • • • • • •
Remove the sliced truffles and the strips of ham and belly of pork, and reserve. Then fold in the beaten eggs. Spread out the skin of the turkey on a clean surface and lay the fillets on top of it. Spread some of the meat mixture onto the breasts, then put a layer of strips of ham , pork belly , turkey fillets and slices of truffle, repeat until the ingredients are all used up. Sew together the edges of the skin 30

First thing is to bone the turkey. It is best to place the bird upside down and cut the skin along the spine. Using your fingers ease away the skin in one piece if possible first on one side then the other. Take the breasts apart, open them up like a book and flatten them out. Cut into strips and mince. Add the pork, veal and turkey mince into a bowl and mix well. Season with ground pepper and salt, add the truffles, ham and pork belly cut into fine strips on the top of the mix, sprinkle with the brandy and sherry and leave to marinate for around 4 hours.

and seal up any holes. Place on a clean muslin cloth, roll and secure with string. Put into a large saucepan, together with the carcasses cut in small pieces and cut up vegetables and add some dry sherry. Cover with 3 litres of cold water. Bring to the boil and allow to cook at a gentle simmer for 3 hours. Make sure that it is evenly cooked, then remove the roll and leave it on a dish to drain and cool.

Remove the cloth and place the roll onto a wire rack for few minutes to strain. Does the Archangel “Larios” visit you? The Prickly Pair look at some of the medicine alternatives available on the Costa del Sol. In the unenlightened good old days, if you felt under the weather, you popped along to your doctor and, unless your doctor was Harold Shipman, you left with a prescription for some pills that made you feel better. Nowadays it’s all different; your first port of call is the Alternative Practitioner. Now I am not totally cynical and, if there does exist an alternative medicine that hasn’t been previously stuck in some poor Beagles eye, then I would be all for it. However, as with anything that appears to be slightly removed from the norm, it will always attract that certain element… You know the ones I mean, yes they are still at it, groping around trying to get on top of the mysteries of the Universe that they are convinced the rest of us are missing. All this nonsense started a little while back, sometime in the eighties, with “Feng Shui”, when a flock of housewives from adult evening classes would break into your house and re-arrange your furniture. All well and good as long as you are not blind!! Thankfully, that particular form of madness seems to have died a death and the only people lamenting its demise would be gold fish and pea shingle salesmen. However, hot on the heel of “Feng Shui”, comes “Reiki”. I am not at all sure what these so called “Reiki Masters” are up to, but I can’t get out of my head the picture of that big rat in the dressing gown who lived in the sewers with some teenage turtles. 32

The closest I have got to a plain English explanation is, and I quote: “It is not just Reiki that can bring about positive changes in the way we think and behave, but more about our own beliefs about us. The answer lies within”. Now, I for one could certainly do with some positive changes to my usual behaviour, but I think that maybe “Betty Ford” would make a better job of that than a so called “Reiki Master”. I am being perhaps a little unfair here, Reiki doesn’t actually claim to be an alternative medicine, and my mentioning it was solely for the sake of a cheap swipe at something that I am sure is very beneficial to a lot of people. It’s a free world after all and, if some sad s**s really believe “The answer lies within”, then who am I to try and winkle it out of them. No prisoners, however, can be taken on my next lot; I recently stole a flyer from a window at a coffee shop, advertising an invitation to “meet angels”. I stole it from the window for two reasons. For one, I didn’t want anybody, who might know me, to see me reading it and, two, I wanted to take it home, so I could p**s myself in the comfort of my own home! The information gleaned from this flyer seems to be that we are
surrounded by angels and, with a little help from the people in the know, we can actually get to meet them and, unlike those shepherds tending their flocks by night, we won’t be scared by the experience. Oh no! Quite the contrary, our lives will be enriched and rewarded by the whole thing for a small donation of just €30, although a loaves and fishes buffet and a healing crystal are very kindly thrown in. Under normal circumstances, for me, a donation of €30 conjures up more spirits than I can humanly handle and the only angels I would be seeing are nurses. Joking aside, these people are more worrying than the Reiki rabble, by using the terms “Angels” there is an obvious religious connotation and using religion to prey on people’s gullibility is a bit like playing your Joker. I like to see a fair fight, there are plenty of people out there desperate to believe in something and most of them would worship a golden dog’s t**d, if it was given the right P.R. It all just goes to prove it’s a funny old world we live in, but, I for one, would prefer not to be given a rub down with a bit of glass by an ex hairdresser from Ongar called Steph the next time the Arch Angel “Larios” has visited me. Adios.
