editor This month we are pleased to show we have enough credibility to be granted an exclusive interview by the Alcadesa (Mayor) of Manilva. After all we are the longest established media on this Costa and we have earned our credibility! As a business born in Sabinillas I sincerely hope that the area will keep improving and attract some professional businesses, which in turn can attract good quality consumers. With Easter round the corner, it is the start of the new summer season I think we should all make an effort to attract quality tourism by offering a quality, professional service. It’s what is needed.

SABINILLAS AN AUTHENTIC SEASIDE RESORT San Luis de Sabinillas is all you would expect of an attractive seafront resort, comparable to Torquay in England. Although there is no pier, the promenade, flanked by bars and restaurants, covers the entire length of the village and beach. Traditionally Sabinillas, a fishing village, was a preferred summer resort for the Spanish, now it’s the perfect seaside resort for families with children from all over the world. You can literally park your car for your entire stay and find all you need within walking distance. With lots of entertainment It is ideal for children, especially on the beach. The predicted popularity of this village has resulted in a good selection of holiday accommodation to include inexpensive hotels and many self-catering apartments and villas. On the map you will find some of the services nearest to the beach which we know can be recommended.

LÍNEA DIRECTA BECOMES THE FIRST INSURER TO SELL ITS PRODUCTS VIA MOBILE TELEPHONE Línea Directa has launched its new website for mobiles, which makes it the first insurance company to distribute its products via smartphones. The new site, which uses xhtml technology, is compatible with the iOS, Android and Blackberry operating systems and is capable of offering customers a price in under 3 minutes while asking them no more than ten questions. In addition, unlike other websites, which use “masks” in their mobile versions, LíneaDirecta’s new quoting system is 100% adapted to smartphone technology. The website will initially be available for offering car insurance quotes and will then be extended to cover the company’s motorbike and home insurance sectors.Linea Directa’s new page for smartphones also includes information on the insurer’s main products and services and offers a click-to-call service which allows users to send a request for the company to call

them if they have any questions or if they wish to purchase the policy with the help of an operator. With this new tool, the insurer hopes to record over 150,000 quotes per year and strengthen its position as the leader in Internet and mobile applications. The new quoting system has been designed taking into account aspects such as Internet surfing habits, easy operability, simplicity and user-friendliness for the customer. LíneaDirecta’s commitment to mobile technology is part of the growing importance of Internet searches on smartphones, due to the fact that in 2015 over half of all organic searches on the Internet will be carried out using these devices.

in my opinion

Monkey see, Monkey do! Mimicking must be something that humans have inherited from monkeys; it has never been more evident than now. Some helpful tips for the advertiser on the Costa del Sol – by Michael McCrae While it is true that there is nothing new under the sun (nihil novum sub sole), I do not know what makes some people think that they can copy and do as good a job as someone who has done it for years and even all his life. I think this must be one of the most irritating things for the established professionals.

10

www.webexpressguide.com

I can understand that everyone has a right to earn a living, however I think it is wrong to do so by copying ideas from established businesses and falsely convincing buyers they are better and/or cheaper. I have come across an increasing number of business people complaining of this problem, while buyers

in my opinion

eventually discover the truth for themselves the temporary distraction loses business for everyone. I can only comment on my own line of business and I can confirm that with fifty-two years of marketing experience worldwide, encompassing advertising and promotion over a span of more than 30 years, I have never seen so much incompetence and deceit as with some media on the Costa del Sol. Just because a publication is new or cheaper it does not mean that it is better than an established one. It is the longest established business that really knows its trade and the market in order to maximise results. Advertising is but a part of marketing, an important part perhaps, however it is wiser to examine one’s own business and one’s competition with the idea of advertising a real consumer need and not just rely on the media to perform miracles. If it doesn’t sell it never will, no matter what media is used. The grass is never greener next door; on the contrary, the longer a business has been on the Costa the more it should be trusted. How many media and publications have you seen come and go in the last 12 months? For a start there are some advertising basics well established since time immemorial that need to be taken into account and which will never change. For example newspapers are meant to provide daily information, on a smaller scale, weekly local newspapers are also acceptable. What is the use of providing the public with monthly newspapers full of “old hat” information, when the dailies and local weeklies are already available? Not unless we are talking of some remote village up in the mountains or a specialized paper like a police gazette or a local Parish publication.

As far as the monthly publications are concerned, these are represented by professionally prepared magazines, with articles covering various interesting topics or one specific topic (ie: National Geographic). A collection of advertisements bound in a booklet is most definitely not a magazine. Of course there are always the justifiable exceptions to the rule for specific marketing reasons as for instance “Azalea: A Magazine by Third World Lesbians” or Craft Magazine. For these a quarterly publication is more than sufficient but is does not serve the purpose required by most of the advertisers on the Costa who look for business from all directions and walks of life. Of course the cost of paper and printing is very high but it is wrong to suggest “cheaper” advertising because a publication is quarterly or even published 3 times a year. What is the point of that? Do you believe that such publications are printed and distributed every month? If that was the case it would defy the object of being quarterly and it would cost more. Any way what is the point in that? It is false economy to assume that a quarterly advert will have best effect. Any professional advertiser will tell you that advertising must be constant. The more you see it the more it works. Of course there are many more issues about advertising and marketing. Issues such as identifying and targeting specific consumers, location of consumers, identifying suitable media and much, much more. Marketing is a complex and profound science and an advert in any cheap or even very expensive table top publication without a good marketing justification is certainly not the answer that provides sales.

WHATS NEWS

Escuela de arte Ecuestre Riding School Estepona Under its new management the Escuela de Arte Ecuestre Costa del Sol is now making enormous strides towards world recognition as the best and most modern school and equestrian centre in Europe. Such recognition and title is certainly well deserved. The Escuela de Arte Ecuestre in Estepona already figures very high with the Spanish Horse Riding Federation as well as the British Horse Society. It is not just the establishment that is impressive, what must also be taken into account is the quality of service and most of all the quality of teaching that is provided for students as well as other riders and visitors.

students and riders increase at a steady pace. This has been particularly noticeable at the Pony Club where children also have the opportunity to join the “Pony Club Membership and obtain some special privileges.

Five times declared absolute champion of Andalucia and three times Champion of the Spanish Yeguada, as well as the Seville Derby twice, he won some 54 National Grand Prix in Malaga, Seville, Jaen, Burgos, Logroño, Estepona, Badajoz, Valladolid, Las Palmas, Tenerife , Cordoba and others.

Now that spring is just around the corner, there is nothing more relaxing as well as exciting than visiting the Escuela de Arte Ecuestre and possibly consider joining some of the classes, if horse racing is considered the sport of kings so must be horse riding.

With regards to jumping, the Escuela gives a warm welcome to Aurelio Gutierrez Garcia, the new teacher who will present a formidable jump teaching team alongside Paul George. Both teachers are proven national and international champions. Paul George has jumped on more than 15 occasions for Great Britain in Europe winning an impressive number of classes in excess of 95 classes, not to mention local and

A crisis means

OPPORTUNITIES

In times of crisis there can always be a silver lining. By the Count De La Perrelle. We all know the seriousness of the crisis here in Spain. According to Madrid-based property consultants Acuùa & Asociados, there are around two million resale, ready-built and partially complete properties on the market, of which an estimated 11 to 17 per cent are owned by the banks. With such an oversupply of property, prices could still have some way to go, do bear in mind though that even if you want to bide your time for even bigger discounts, don’t expect to uncover high-end homes going for a song as that level of property seems to have levelled out for the moment. Remember that in times of crisis there can always be a silver lining. Across our area of the Costa del Sol there are many opportunities for budding entrepreneurs and for anyone looking to buy a home in an area of such natural beauty with access to international airports like Malaga and Gibraltar making travel to and from abroad fairly easy. Many economists justify these

times of crisis as the best times to take and create businesses. The same is true of the crisis in Spain. It is the most logical reason! When things are bad then they can only get better. Therefore after a period of crisis there will surely be strong growth and high prosperity. There are always opportunities if one is prepared to look for them. The tourism sector, which had declined since 2008, rose sharply in 2011 and is expected to reach higher levels in 2012 and 2013. Spain seems to be finding solutions to the crisis. In times of crisis, everything tends to be cheaper: labour, projects, facilities, etc ‌ In addition, with high unemployment in Spain, it is very easy to find the skilled and unskilled employees needed to staff any new

business venture. Perhaps the recession has another plus side too. It is a period when life has a way of sorting out the rubbish. Maybe this is a good time to inject

some new people with fresh ideas into areas that have become staid and slow. We have many such areas along the coast. Places that really could do with a kick up the proverbial and shake themselves into sorting out the wheat from the chaff. We are all aware that there will be many people who decide to pack up shop and go back home. In fact, according to some of the local removal firms, the majority of their business recently has been the exodus of Brits returning home. Perhaps it was time for some of them to go as the Costa del Sol is changing. Although some of these changes are due to mainly negative factors, I think that our area can only benefit ultimately from this exodus. Already, a large number of Brits and other expats have left the area between Marbella to Sotogrande, probably they were unable to make ends meet in this economic climate and I am sure that there will be many more who will follow in their footsteps. Let me be really honest here, in my opinion the whole area is beginning to feel much cleaner! Perhaps the people who enjoyed the boom and took advantage of it to make a fast pound were less than legitimate in their intentions. I am sure we are all aware of a few chancers and the not too desirable type of people with no manners, no experience and absolutely no class,

(money does not indicate class) who made money out of fiddling the system and in turn just dragged the place down to a really chavvy state of affairs. Of course, now that the money is running out they are leaving. Good riddance! Off to find some other poor slob of a country to rip off. Many older residents who have been here for years and some of the new ones who have been disappointed at what they found are no doubt breathing a sigh of relief. I am sure that even the reputable businesses are happy to see the dregs depart. There have been too many chancers who have come over here to set up shop with no intention of ever paying full dues. It does the reputation of legitimate businesses no good at all. This could be the right time to take that chance you have always dreamt of, if so then consider making the most of that opportunity. Check your figures and do not be afraid to negotiate and barter for the best deal. Rents for business are not laid in stone so do not be afraid to suggest a more affordable price. Whatever you may decide to do, do it properly and be legitimate in your operation. There are some good businesses on the coast who will love the idea of fair competition as that is a good basis for business. Let’s keep this area clean and real. Have passion in what you wish to do and I wish you good luck. www.webexpressguide.com

Chic Classic Spring?

From white shirts to pencil skirts and the classic mac, we´ve got the basics covered. By Georgia Beck-Davies of Marbella Beauty Academy

18

www.webexpressguide.com

The classic white shirt has fabulous fashion potential, it will become your new best friend, and you can always depend on it. But like anything we come to know and love, we can take the white shirt a teensy bit for granted. I bet if I asked you how you wore it, you would probably say that it was mostly for work, yet it has so much more style potential. Think of Marilyn Monroe in Misfits wearing a man’s white shirt with simple jeans, she looks red hot! And that’s how your white shirt should make you feel. If you want to get away from the traditional work suit, match it up with a pencil skirt and some pretty little pumps or if you want to go for the more chic look, court shoes make a statement. Dressing down is the new dressing up, choose a shirt that’s a size or two bigger and you´ve got classic boy-friend style. Or if you don’t have one just nick it from your other half and give it a soft feminine touch, this is the perfect casual look. Match it with some skinny jeans, add some accessories and add a few girlie touches- quilted ballet pumps and some long necklaces. If you’re heading out for drinks at some point, style it up with some high, high heels, or just pair it with your favourite boots for a trés sexy look.

At Last! Genuine Italian Restaurant in Sabinillas Because of its popularity, the number of restaurants offering Italian dishes has grown to incredible proportions; however what many offer is nowhere near what Italian cuisine is all about, unless you know Italian food, it may be difficult to tell the difference. For this reason we are making a point of introducing “Pavarotti”. We are well pleased to have a genuine Italian cuisine restaurant right here in Sabinillas. Perfectly located on the Paseo Maritimo (promenade by the sea), Pavarotti presents an elegant atmosphere on the sea-front backed by good service and good fresh food at down t o earth prices.

Enzo, the owner and chef, is from Rome, the “Eternal City”, the home of many original well known dishes and ingredients such as fresh spaghetti alla carbonara, gnocchi, lamb, pancetta, ricotta, pecorino and so on. Not to forget the café espresso and the famous vino dei Castelli Romani like Frascati. While Naples is described as the home of pizza, you should try a pizza or a calzone in any restaurant in Rome! Pavarotti is committed to offering diners a comprehensive menu of classic traditional Italian dishes, to which in some instances Enzo will add some of his creativity to enhance some dishes with a modernized twist. Don’t take my word for it or anybody else’s, try and discover what good food is all about. Unsere traditionelle philosophie: Wir legen wert auf eine anspruchsvolle Qualitätsküche. There is a lot more to Spain than meets the eye.

“There is a lot more to Spain than meets the eye” Living on the coast one gets accustomed to a way of life which is way, way different from inland Spain. Try Benahavis. I recently had the opportunity to visit Benahavis. Although it is not that much “inland”, it certainly is a different world. Just 7 kms from the coast, this mountain village is surrounded by parklands that give it a cosy, romantic, secluded feeling. Situated between Marbella, Estepona and Ronda it enjoys some incredible sea views and easy access to 12 of the Costa del Sol golf courses. La Zagaleta, the highly exclusive mansion club contributes to Benahavis’ status as the richest municipality per capita in Andalucía. Thousands of visitors flock to Benahavis each year, but that’s not just because of the views, the golf and history it is because, renowned for its food and quality of restaurants, Benahavis has earned its name as the dining room of the Costa del Sol.

www.webexpressguide.com

This is where one can best appreciate a true Andcalucian lifestyle, genuine Spanish cuisine and most of all some genuine hospitality. There are so many restaurants that the air is filled with all the different aromas that will awake the most dormant of appetites. Of course, as a rustic mountain village, the main dishes highlight partridge, rabbit, lamb, venison and all kinds of pork products to include some excellent jamon. The proximity to the coast also guarantees some very fresh fish dishes and some international cuisine. Naturally you cannot have so much good food without the availability of some exceptional wines which we propose to introduce to you each month.

I have had the great pleasure of being invited at the “LA ESCALERA” restaurant, in the heart of Benahavis, where I had the opportunity to savour both some excellent food washed down with some excellent Spanish wines, which I understand cannot be bought in supermarkets. These selected wines, supplied by “S.G. Pérez Vinoteca” are only available at “La Escalera” restaurant bodega once you have had the opportunity to try them with your meal or This month’s recommended wine at certain wine tasting events which hopefully we shall be able to announce as they become known. “La Escalera” is one of the oldest established restaurants in Benahavis where Manolo is not only the owner but also the chef who will make sure you enjoy your meal even if he has to entertain you himself. Manolo specialises in what can be described as a Mediterranean cuisine, using fresh daily produce to create local traditional dishes coupled with his own added originality to please even the most demanding palate. Do not hesitate to ask for Paella or a Chateaux Briand cooked at your table or a Sirloin cooked on charcoal with garlic sauce if this is what you prefer. Manolo delights himself in surprising diners with innumerable starters. Visiting “La Escalera” is a most enjoyable experience backed by an incredibly warm hospitality and service at very reasonable prices. Making a special trip just for the culinary experience is most recommended.

Wine is available through S.G. Pérez Vinoteca Tel: +34 690 714 927 Nocedal Crianza 2008 is a 100% Rioja Tempranillo. Bordeaux colour with a medium robe, deep, clean and bright. Very distinctive tertiary aromas, very persistent and aromatic. Fresh and flavoursome in the mouth with acidic hints, powerful but pleasant tannin, reminiscent of chocolate. Well balanced and sweet to the palate.

This month I have decided to give you a recipe to warm you up during this chilly time. Give yourselves a warm hearty meal after a long chilly week at work and treat yourselves to a glass or two of red wine, which will go perfectly with this meal.

Ingredients

• 450 g stewing beef steaks, e.g. shin of beef, or skirt, or chuck steak, cubed • 600 ml water • 4 large carrots, sliced • 1 small turnip, diced • 1 large onion, chopped • 1/2 a white cabbage, shredded • 10 medium potatoes, peeled and halved • 2 cube of beef stock • 2 sprigs thyme • 2 sprigs parsley • 2 tbsp plain flour • 1 pinches black pepper • • • • • •

For the dumplings:

220 g self-raising flour 0.25 tsp salt 110 g beef suet 2 tbsp parsley, finely chopped 1 clove garlic, crushed 1 dashes of cold water, to mix

1. Put the beef and water in a large saucepan and bring up to the boil. Simmer gently for 1 hour. 2. Add the vegetables, stock and herbs. Bring back to the boil then leave to simmer for 1 hour until the meat is tender, stirring occasionally. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

28

www.webexpressguide.com

3. Mix the flour with cold water to make a paste. Add this to the stew to thicken the broth. 4. Meanwhile, make the dumplings. Sift the flour with the salt, and then stir in the suet and parsley. 5. Add the garlic and enough cold water to mix to a soft but not sticky dough. 6. Divide into pieces about as big as walnut, and roll each one into a ball. 7. Add the dumplings to the stew, cover the pan and simmer for a final 15-20 minutes, until the dumplings are puffed and cooked through and stew has thickened. 8. Serve immediately. Chef’s Tip………Why not serve with mashed potatoes or baby new potatoes.

BUSINESS & MONEY

31st March 2013 Asset Filing Deadline

By Richard Alexander Dip. PFS

The potential cost of non-disclosure of overseas assets by Spanish tax resident expats could be up to 130% of the value of the assets themselves. Any assets held overseas should be considered and where the value of these exceed 50,000 Euros in one asset class, they need to be declared by 31st March 2013 to avoid the potential tax and penalties, which the Spanish authorities could levy. Take an undisclosed investment of 200,000 Euros, the tax on this would amount to 52% = 104,000 Euros. However, the penalty could be a further 150% of the tax which is an additional 156,000 Euros so not only would the whole asset be lost, you would still owe the Hacienda 60,000 Euros – non-disclosure simply is not worth the risk! These new rules took effect from 1st January 2013 with a requirement for non-Spanish assets to be declared between that date and 31st March 2013. Disclosure is necessary when the total value of an asset class exceeds 50,000 Euros, so for example, if you have 3 bank accounts offshore, each of which have a balance of 20,000 Euros, don’t be fooled into thinking you are below the threshold because you are not. These are all assets held in the same asset class and are aggregated for disclosure purposes and you will need to provide account numbers and details of the amounts held in each account as at 31st December 2012 or the average balance over the last three months of 2012 if higher. The different asset classes can broadly be identified as being cash on deposit, real estate, stocks & shares and collective investments. Be careful though, because if you are named as the beneficiary to any trusts, these amounts will also need to be declared because the Spanish legal system does not recognize trusts as having any legal status of their own and will look through the trust to see who the beneficiaries are. The need to declare this information comes at a time when the Spanish tax authorities are seeking to tax Spanish tax residents on their worldwide income and 30

www.webexpressguide.com

to levy heavy fines when they discover that assets have not been disclosed. There is no time to delay with dealing with this matter and if you have not already done so, you should speak to your tax advisers in Spain to ensure that you are fully compliant with these rules. With these new requirements, you should also focus your attention on whether your investments are held in the most appropriate way. For example, if you have money on deposit, which you do not need on a regular basis, either for capital or income, then the interest that you earn as a Spanish tax resident, should be declared and tax paid on it. However, by investing in a smarter way, you can avoid the need to pay any tax until such time as you draw down some of the money. This is not complicated financial planning but simply using some tried and tested, Spanish tax compliant investment vehicles, which are designed to defer tax until you make 13045 RAFP Web Express Magazine Ad REV_RAFP 06/07/2011 a withdrawal.

I

prickly pair

And what was your new year’s resolution? Yes, it’s that time of year again! The quality street tin is down to its last coffee cream, you’ve memorized every answer in the trivial pursuit game and the only drink left in the house is a bottle of Morrison’s port. Now that the massive hangovers have subsided as well as the massive feelings of guilt that encouraged you to resolve and make that list of things to give up, how many of those spur of the moment, good intentions have actually made it this far?

32

www.webexpressguide.com

I would be the first to admit that in my house the only thing with a well defined bone structure after Christmas was the turkey carcass, but that doesn’t fill me with a rush and unnecessary urge to give up my few innocent little pleasures. So why do people who thought it was a fantastic idea to eat their own bodyweight in chocolate and drink like a George Best/Oliver Reed reunion, suddenly develop a sanctimonious desire to embrace clean living? We all know well that Saturday/Sunday morning “Oh my God! How much did I drink? Never again!” feeling, in fact it is possible to feel that way a full 52 times a year. But only after the night of the biggest p**s up of the Gregorian calendar, do people actually mean it (well at least for a full 24 hours). Another group, desperate to go trotting along the path of righteousness, are fat people. January the 1st should be made St Lettuce day, because it’s the day when all manner of previously happy gluttons, take up grazing, in the misguided belief that six months of eating hippy food, will wipe out a lifetime of worship at the temple of Mc Donald. Sex is something else that receives the New Year cold shoulder, although this is probably the shortest lived resolution of the lot; I will never be convinced that anybody, who’s entire belief system revolves entirely around sleeping with as many different people as is humanly possible, will just give up their hobby, because of some weird, outdated, post p**s-up guilt trip. We live in a world that is becoming increasingly PC and as a consequence increasingly boring! I am too young to have joined in the good bits back in the 60s but I am sure that I would have done and I do strongly believe that the reintroduction of copious guilt free sex, in a consequence free environment would certainly perk things up a bit!

some non smoking, clean living, and sanctimonious git preaching away on St Hangovers Day. Getting more exercise also is a phrase you will hear at some point early on, during practically every New Years Eve party in the universe. The way to treat this one is with the contempt it deserves; this much hackneyed piece of nonsense will usually be bandied about by the person least likely to get more or indeed any exercise at all in the whole room. The people advocating more exercise are also the same people doing the “giving up sex” thing, so I will leave you to try and work that one out. Exercise and especially the kind to be found at gymnasiums, is the work of the devil and should be avoided at all costs; instead there are people out there who not only volunteer to put themselves through self inflicted purgatory, but actually seem to enjoy it! Still it takes all sorts to make a world, as they say, and who am I to pass judgement on a bunch of masochists. For myself, last year has been a bit of a b**tard at times, but I managed to end on a high and not being one to wallow for too long in the mire of despair I find myself looking forward to the new year with a feeling of optimism; so let me leave you with a couple of valuable thoughts I picked up along the way. Firstly, don’t give up anything that you enjoy and feels right for you, regardless of outside pressure. Always keep in mind that life is the real thing (you don’t get a trial run) and finally, if you find during the course of the year someone special, remember the odds of doing so are usually stacked against you, count yourself lucky and treat that person accordingly.

Smoking is probably number one on the “I must stop” list. Smoking is undeniably bad for you and I wouldn’t disagree with anybody wishing to give it up, what I do disagree with however, is the timing. Waking up on January the 1st feeling like s**t, is no time to suddenly give up a whole host of little habits all in one go. You stand a far greater chance of success by doing these things slowly and without www.webexpressguide.com

Are you safe to travel?

Now is the time of year when many plan their holidays. One of the things often overlooked is travel insurance. By Leslie Thomas of STM Nummos S.L.

Travel Insurance:

Stress - Packing, travelling to the airport, long queues

If you are travelling outside of the EU and do not have international medical cover, then travel insurance is essential unless you want to risk incurring potentially crippling medical bills.

Deep vein thrombosis - Deep vein thrombosis

If you are travelling within the EU, a European Health Insurance card will cover you in the event of a medical emergency, but this will only cover you in state run facilities and to the levels which apply in that country. It will not cover you for private treatment.

year and flying has been named as one of the safest modes of transport. However, the health effects of flying have given rise to much public concern in recent years. With the growing number of people travelling by air there is more opportunity for health problems. It’s important that you are aware of the risks and take steps to prevent them. Keep the following tips in mind for a healthy flight and you should feel fresh and ready to go at your destination.

at the check-in desk and delays can raise your heart rate and stress levels. So how can you have a stress-free flight? Allow plenty of time to get to the airport and plan your trip in advance. Once onboard, settle back and relax as much as possible. The in-flight videos offering relaxation tips are very useful, and can help you relax and sleep. (DVT) is when a blood clot forms in one of your deep veins, usually in your leg. Flying may increase your risk of deep vein thrombosis by slowing blood flow and causing it to collect in your legs. However, it’s not limited to flying - anyone who sits in the same position for a long period of time can develop DVT.

Flight socks can help if you’re travelling for at least six hours and you’re at an increased risk of DVT – for example, if you’re

WHATS NEWS

I stockings should be enough for your flight - but make sure they fit correctly. Walking around the cabin and doing lower leg exercises in your seat are simple options that may also help.

Airborne diseases - It may surprise you to know

that you’re no more likely to catch an infection when flying compared with in any other environment. The air in the cabin passes through filters that trap bacteria and viruses – similar to the filters used in operating theatres to keep the air clean. If you’re feeling under the weather after your flight, the air in the cabin isn’t to blame. It’s probably because you have caught a virus or infection from sitting close to people. If you’re feeling unwell, the best way to prevent infections from spreading is to delay your journey until you have recovered.

Ear problems - You may be familiar with pain and pressure in your ears during take off or landing. As the plane climbs, the pressure in the cabin decreases, causing air to escape from your middle ear and sinuses. When the plane descends, air must flow back into your ear to equalise the pressure differences. If this doesn’t happen, your ears will feel blocked and painful. Often the best ways to equalise pressure are the simple remedies of chewing gum or yawning. Dry skin and eyes

- Low humidity in the aircraft cabin can lead to dry skin and eyes. Applying moisturiser and wearing glasses instead of contact lenses should help to prevent dryness. It’s a myth that low humidity reduces your fluid levels and causes dehydration. You may be tempted by the free tea and coffee on-

36

www.webexpressguide.com

board but try to limit these and also how much alcohol you drink – too much can lead to dehydration during long-haul flights. Drinking water should help to keep your fluid levels topped up.

Jet lag - If you fly across several different time zones, your body’s normal body clock can become out of sync. It can take your body several days to adjust to the new rhythm of daylight and darkness. To try to ease this, if you’re flying east, sleep on the plane if it’s night time at your destination and don’t sleep during the day when you arrive. If you’re going west, try to stay awake for as long as possible. Children and flying - Although flying shouldn’t

pose any particular health risks to youngsters, the baby may have difficulty equalising pressure. Breast or bottle feeding your baby, or giving your child a drink during take off and landing, can help. Be safe and enjoy your holidays!!

VIRTUAL HUMOUR

I saw a poor old lady fall over today on the ice!! At least I presume she was poor - she only had €1.20 in her purse.

I was driving this morning when I saw an RACQ van parked up. The driver was sobbing uncontrollably and looked very miserable. I thought to myself that guy’s heading for a breakdown. Statistically, 6 out of 7 dwarves are not Happy. I sat opposite an Indian lady on the train today, she shut her eyes and stopped breathing. I thought she was dead, until I saw the red spot on her forehead and realised she was just on standby When I was in the pub I heard a couple of plonks saying that they wouldn’t feel safe on an aircraft if they knew the pilot was a woman. What a pair of sexists. I mean, it’s not as if she’d have to reverse the bloody thing! What is the definition of Mistress? Someone between the Mister and Mattress I bought some ‘rocket salad’ yesterday but it went off before I could eat it! A teddy bear is working on a building site. He goes for a tea break and when he returns he notices his pick has been stolen. The bear is angry and reports the theft to the foreman. The foreman grins at the bear and says “Oh, I forgot to tell you, today’s the day the teddy bears have their pick nicked.” Murphy says to Paddy “What ya talkin to an envelope for?” “I’m sending a voicemail ya thick sod!” Just got back from my mate’s funeral; he died after being hit on the head with a tennis ball. It was a lovely service. 19 paddies go to the cinema, the ticket lady asks “Why so many of you?” Mick replies, “The film said 18 or over.”

Family Guy Director: Seth MacFarlane. Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Giovanni Ribisi, Mila Kunis, Seth MacFarlane Comedy

WOOL Hugh Howey Published by Ebooks and Simon & Schuster

This author can really write, and the dystopian life he has imagined is, at times, truly disturbing. This is a world where the air is deadly, and where humanity has lived ever since anyone can remember, in a giant underground silo, a bunker hundreds of storeys deep, creating everything people need beneath the earth. The outside world can only be seen through a blurry image projected onto a wall, “lifeless hills ... a familiar rotting skyline ... ancient glass and steel”. The filth of the atmosphere gradually coats the cameras capturing the view, and the silo’s capital punishment is “cleaning”: the criminal is sent outside to polish the lenses before being overcome by poisonous gases.

42

www.webexpressguide.com

Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane brings his boundarypushing brand of humor to the big screen for the first time as writer, director and voice star of Ted. In the live action/CG-animated comedy, he tells the story of John Bennett (Mark Wahlberg), a grown man who must deal with the cherished teddy bear who came to life as the result of a childhood wish…and has refused to leave his side ever since.

Skyfall Directed by: Sam Mendes Cast: Albert Finney, Daniel Craig, Judi Dench, Ralph Fiennes, Gordon Milne, Javier Bardem, Ben Whishaw, Helen McCrory, Naomie Harris, Rory Kinnear, Berenice Marlohe, Ola Rapace, Nicholas Woodeson, Bill Buckhurst, Peter Basham Action. Release 18/02/13

Bond’s loyalty to M is tested as her past comes back to haunt her. As MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost. Great family entertainment. Excellent action and adventure

The Dark Knight Rises Director: Christopher Nolan Starring: Anne Hathaway , Gary Oldman, Marion Cotillard, Matthew Modine, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Christian Bale, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Tom hardy. Action

It has been eight years since Batman vanished into the night, turning, in that instant, from hero to fugitive. Assuming the blame for the death of D.A. Harvey Dent, the Dark Knight sacrificed everything for what he and Commissioner Gordon both hoped was the greater good. For a time the lie worked, as criminal activity in Gotham City was crushed under the weight of the anticrime Dent Act.

whats news

An Exclusive, non political, interview with the Mayor of Manilva It is not often that one gets elected a second time. What do you think has convinced the people to vote for you for another term of office? I believe that as a woman, given a blank cheque, I am quite close to my electorate and I think that it was essential to identify the needs of this pueblo which comprises Manilva, Sabinillas and El Castillo and I realised that with 6500 empty dwellings, 15,000 registered residents and more than 40,000 summer visitors the first need was to achieve political stability, cleanliness of the municipality and security but mostly an investment needed to improve the equipment and infrastructure of the area. It was necessary to provide the people with more than just a house such a parks, remodelling of all streets, ensure that the 8km of beach are in good condition. This is where I concentrated my efforts in my first term. It was necessary to re-organise the internal affairs of the Town Hall but most of all to change the image of the municipality offering greater facilities to its inhabitants such as parks for the children, additional schooling facilities, the guarderia, the new health centre. It is all this that helped to start changing the image of Manilva and this has evidently been noticed by the electorate.

WHATS NEWS

Sabinillas has become a seaside resort, but the recession seems to have hit traders pretty hard. We have a fantastic paseo that does attract visitors of all nationalities with good spending power, unfortunately the parking problem discourages them from coming to the area. The ₏200 parking fines most definitely put people off. Will something be done about the parking problem? You can tell your readers that for this summer, after Easter, the council will make available to the public the parking lot in the new sport centre. As the sale of these parking places has not yet started, the space will be made available free of charge to relieve the problem that visitors have when coming to Sabinillas. This represents additional parking for some 300 vehicles, which I think is sufficient to relieve the problem. I think the problem extends to residents too like me. Imagine coming home after a long day at work, hungry and tired and not be able to park? Is it not possible to provide some sort of parking advantage to residents, like it is done elsewhere? This is somewhat more complicated, there is very little space available left between the carretera and the paseo, nevertheless I shall look into this and discuss it with the local police. However I do think that the additional 300 spaces will relieve this problem too. I think that we need to attract quality visitors, albeit consumers. What else is being proposed to improve the image of Manilva? Manilva, is a place of natural beauty and tourist attraction and the Council does and will provide services of the highest possible quality, however the businesses in the area, especially restaurants must also be willing to provide a top quality service. People do not mind paying a little more as long as they get quality. It is not all down to the Council, everyone has to cooperate to ensure the growth and prosperity of this Pueblo. Mediocrity is not the future. This year, the Council will be investing more than 2 million Euros of its money in Sabinillas alone. In the first place the 4 teachers’ houses obstructing the paseo will be demolished and the paseo will be extended all the way to the camping. Furthermore, as from March, we are starting another phase at the sports centre to complete and provide a first class gymnasium manned 44

www.webexpressguide.com

by qualified personnel. Is the public aware of this? I think they know but do not believe it! What is being done to improve the Puerto de la Duquesa? The port is a beautiful place with good quality businesses. I have discussed with the Local Police measures such as music licences, correct opening hours, opening licences and so on in order to maintain certain standards of trading and a balanced equilibrium between businesses and residents. What I cannot do is control the running of businesses and their mentality. Anything you might like to add with regards to the future? We must not forget Manilva which has its own attraction and history yet is so little-known even by neighbouring pueblos. We are creating an informative centre, next to the fire station, where, from May onwards, visitors can obtain all the information they want about the area and even taste our own great wine produced from our own muscatel grapes. We live in difficult times one of my priorities has been to re-organise and sanitise the Council, which has grown in size and wisdom, the accounts have been brought up to date from year 2001 up to 2011 thus achieving credibility and respectability. Additional parking is being provided in Manilva itself and two more parks are planned for. We are not forgetting the maintenance and preservation of our heritage like the famous Church of Santa Ana in Manilva and the Castillo. I am also hoping to reach an agreement with the various presidents of the different urbanizations in the area, in order to improve their roads, some of which have deteriorated quite a bit after some 30 years.

Thank you DoĂąa Antonia, I sincerely look forward to finding myself living in a quality, sought after pueblo

HoroscopeS Your future as foretold by the Sabinillas gipsy PISCES

(February 19 – March 20)

Partnerships can be challenging at times, and especially around the 23rd. Allow others space and time to sort things out. Reconnecting with people from your past might figure strongly now. Finances can be up and down in February - there can be small windfalls and unexpected expenses. Overall, however, you are in a personally powerful position, particularly after the New Moon in your sign on the 21st.

CAPRICORN

(December 22 - January 19)

Money matters in general can improve, and conditions are favorable for loans, support, and taxes. More creativity and imagination are brought to your communications - your writing and speaking. You’re developing entirely new interests and absorbing more information naturally. Intuitive powers are strong now.

AQUARIUS (January 20-February 18)

Your high spirits can lead up to an emotional declaration around the 7th. Money matters are generally good, but complicated at times in February. Differences in values can spark a conflict around the 23rd. While you’re becoming decidedly more creative when it comes to making money, and your intuition tends to serve you well, the tendency to overlook important facts is strong as well.

ARIES

(March 21-April 19)

The 7-10 is especially strong for your social life and possibly romantic excitement. Your intuition is becoming a stronger part of your life this month, and many of you will be feeling a little more psychic. Be wary of behind the scenes activity with a friend or co-worker around the 23rd, when a secret could be revealed or jealousies could surface.

TAURUS

(April 20-May 20)

New contacts might intimidate existing ones or a romantic interest, however. A friend might reveal something you’d rather keep under wraps around the 23rd. Some challenges can surface in a romantic relationship or in relationships with your children this month and next. It’s time to make some changes in your approach.

GEMINI

(May 21-June 21)

Work conflicts might be the source, particularly around the 23rd. Things may not be moving at the pace you’d like, but it’s important to be patient. Despite small inconveniences, career matters are strengthening for you. A more creative direction is possible now, and

48

www.webexpressguide.com

you’ll find that it suits you very well. Intuition is beginning to play a strong role in your professional life.

CANCER

( June 22-July 22)

You may find the pace of your daily life challenging in February, however. Responsibilities on the home front can be daunting, and finding the time to run errands and handle paperwork may be a challenge. Others might complain that you’re not keeping in touch. Disagreements are more likely around the 23-24.

LEO

( July 23-August 22)

You are growing towards a more romantic or spiritual approach to your intimate life. Watch for struggles with money or values, particularly with a partner, around the 23rd. It can also be a time of confusion or misunderstandings occur regarding finances and ownership matters.

VIRGO

(August 23-September 22)

You’ll be at your strongest if you tame impatience and work on projects that need fine-tuning or completion rather than adding more to your plate. Your partnering needs are metamorphosing now and in coming months. A stronger desire for a soul mate-type bond is with you.

LIBRA

(September 23-October 22)

In general, it’s not the best time to ask for commitments from others. Living in the moment, and enjoying it, without too many expectations is your best bet right now. Work is strong towards the end of the month, and you’re likely to immerse yourself in it.

SCORPIO (October 23-November 21)

February 7-10 can bring surprising developments surrounding work and career. Associates and higher-ups are paying attention, so make sure you’re shining. A little healthy showing off won’t hurt at this point. While romantic relationships strengthen in general towards the end of the month, a conflict with or about a friend can surface around the 23rd.

SAGITTARIUS

(November 22 - December 21)

Pressures can mount on the professional front, and you may be experiencing delays and assorted slowdowns. Try to steer clear of differences of opinion and other conflicts. Watch for gossip or misunderstandings especially around the 23rd. Romantic surprises or upsets can occur around the 9-10 and 15th. While your charm is strong this month, some relationships can fall short of expectations.

FISKER KARMA ECOSPORT The 2012 Fisker Karma is a four seat plug-in hybrid electric luxury sedan. For up to 50 miles, the vehicle drives gas- and tailpipe-emissions-free using electricity stored in its lithium-ion battery. When the Karma’s battery runs low, a gas-powered, engine/generator seamlessly operates to extend the driving range another 250 miles on a full tank. The battery can be charged with a standard household 120-volt outlet in about 14 hours, or in about six hours with a 240-volt outlet. A glass solar roof panel converts radiated power from the sun into stored electrical energy, effectively increasing the electric range of the Karma. The Fisker Karma is a vehicle that will appeal to any environmentally-conscious consumer.
