What is charity It’s the act of giving money, food or other help to people who need it or to an organisation that helps people in need with no strings attached or profit. There are many people who give to others or to charities to help the needy and they do so with no other reason other than to help. Others do it because they feel guilty for having what others do not or to try and clear their conscience for some reason. While others do it as a good cause in preference to paying tax on the money gifted. What amazes me is the number of charities and events with an ulterior motive that one sees cropping up time and again especially around this time of year. 12

An example of this is when a bar organises a raffle, bingo or quiz with the pretext of giving the profits to charity after deducting the cost of the event from the payments made by the players or contributors. In my book that is not a charity! That is creating an event to generate beer sales for the benefit of the bar owner, secondly I would like to know which charity will benefit from the presumed profits. I have heard of many such charities but not of the beneficiaries. Then you read about a charity event that had hundreds of people who

only raised about €1000. How sad! By all means organise a charity and give all the takings less costs. That’s charity so why not spare the effort and labour and just donate one day’s profit to a reputable charity? Take a restaurant offering a meal for say €25, followed by an auction to raise funds for charity. Is this not an excuse to sell the meals? Where is the charity in that? Of course, as we all know, legislation enforcement is

pretty relaxed here in Andalucía and without a “denuncia” nobody does anything, but did you know that charitable organisations need to be registered? This is a long and complex procedure. An easier way of raising money for charity is to contact an already established foundation; the process is much simpler and less time consuming. Simply explain what you want to do and they can then make you an official donor. This way, in addition to working within the legal framework, you may also have some say as to what the raised funds are used for. In Spain there is a special regime for nonprofit entities, in which, charities are included. This consists of an exemption in income tax for contributions, donations, subsidies, incomes obtained as a result of the activity including rents of real estate. An individual can claim 25 % of the donation on his/her income tax and a corporation can claim 35% of the donation (with a limit on the amount of the donations of 10% of the taxable profits). Surprise, surprise! Regrettably it would seem that the concession has been abused by salaried employees concealed as volunteer

workers, volunteers picking the best donated goods for themselves before offering them for sale to the public, fraudsters posing as charitable organizations and falsification of tax returns among others. It was recently detected that certain people linked with charities in Spain have accumulated great amounts of money that have been sent to tax haven territories; that is some €40 million in offshore accounts. In tax revenue, the loss is approximately €15 million. The Spanish Tax Administration has detected the abuse of charities by conducting analysis of flows of currencies between Spain and other countries and also by reviewing the information received from tax haven territories during the course of investigations carried out by judicial authorities. Does all of this mean that charity begins in one’s own home? That is not charity, surely!

Sherry Trifle Ingredients • 750g frozen summer fruits (raspberries, blackberries, red and blackcurrants) • 250g caster sugar • 9 sheets leaf gelatine • 75g custard powder • 1.2l milk Classic • 1½-2 Madeira cakes, cubed • 4 tbsp sherry or cassis • 300-450ml double cream • 1 tsp vanilla extract • 2 tbsp icing sugar • 2 crushed amaretti biscuits, to serve

Preparation method 1. Put the fruit in a pan with 200g sugar and 1 litre water and bring to a gentle simmer. Cook for 2 mins. then scoop out 6 tbsp fruit and 150ml juice. Now carry on cooking the fruit in the pan for 5 mins. 2. Meanwhile, soak the gelatine in cold water to soften it. A drink or two may help you to relax and socialise, it may even do you some good, but regular drinking presents various health risks. Sensible drinking involves knowing what your limits are and being aware of how much you’re drinking. It’s important to understand how to drink sensibly to enjoy alcohol in moderation as part of a healthy lifestyle.

The guidelines recommend not to regularly drink more than three or four units a day for men, and two or three units a day for women. Although ‘Regularly’ means every day, it’s a good idea to have at least two alcohol-free days a week. So over a week, men shouldn’t have more than 21 units and women shouldn’t have more than 14 units.

Within minutes of taking your first sip, alcohol enters your bloodstream through your stomach wall and is circulated to every part of your body, including your heart, liver and brain. It acts on nerve cells throughout your body and slows down the speed at which your nerves send messages to each other.

This does not mean you can save up all the ‘allowance’ for a weekend binge. A drinking binge is generally defined as drinking double the daily recommended units in one session. The recommended limits are lower for women than for men because women have different amounts of fat, muscle and water in their bodies than men. This affects the way 32

So I would like to share with my adoring fans some of my Christmas shindig, survival secrets. This month the Prickly Pair get full of Christmas Spirit.

The office party To the aesthetically challenged or IT workers, this is the one time of year that they are almost certainly guaranteed a shag, from the pimply post room boy, to the fat bird, who’s a computer genius, but good for F+++ all else. So how do you survive this clerical orgy, with your dignity and underwear intact? One way is to arrive late, all office parties start with an initial period of standing around, clutching a plastic cup of warm, fizzy, supermarket wine and talking b+++++ks, once the ice has been broken however, aided and abetted 34

Cold turkey At some stage during the

festive frolics it is inevitable that some well meaning hostess is going to thrust a pre-mauled Vol Au Vent under your nose, whilst these people are well intentioned they are dangerous. Christmas, like Easter is one of those occasions, when women whose usual culinary flair stretches only to grating a bit of cheese over the burnt bits, suddenly believe they have turned into Delia Smith. One way of cutting them off at the pass is to put it about that you are a vegetarian, although this is no excuse to the more determined hostess and you wouldn’t believe what some of those women get up to with a stick of Celery! Every Christmas the average couple will rush out at the last moment and buy 15 Kilos of Alka Seltzer in the misguided belief that it is a miracle cure for alcohol poisoning. If you drink Gin and tonic, then the chances are you will continue to drink Gin and tonic regardless of the occasion, but I would be willing to bet that you don’t buy “Quails eggs in Aspic” on your usual weekly jaunt to Mercadona. The point I am trying to make is that maybe alcohol gets all the blame when in

fact some of the bizarre food, bandied about at Christmas, may well be to blame for the traditional outbreak of puking and headaches (well that and the in-laws).

Aga-do It’s a shame, but the parties that promise to be the most fun, are invariably the ones you should avoid at all costs. Attending a classy, well organised soirée is one way of getting p++++d for free whilst still knowing that nothing outrageous will happen, but it’s not the kind of place where you will find yourself on the floor, with your skirt around your ears and a complete stranger between your legs singing Oops-Up-side your head and in my opinion is the poorer for it. Fancy dress parties always sound like a good idea, but keep in mind, that if you do manage to pull and end up going home with the dish of the day, then the inevitable outcome is that you will find yourself wandering the streets the next day in search of a taxi dressed as a 42 year old Britney Spears.
