editor page It’s incredible to think that 18 years have passed since I started Web Express Guide. What pleased me this week is meeting someone I had not seen since the early years actually remembering and stating in front of people that Web Express Guide was the first ever medium who devised the idea of publishing on the internet as well as in print. Regardless of people forgetting this we quite simply continue producing a small but quality, professionally published magazine and website. Always on the forefront, shortly we shall have something new to introduce to readers as well internet users. There is no question: we are by far the Ultimate Advertsing OIption available.

“Brilliant”
contemporary art by Roberta
Diazzi
Roberta Diazzi is an Italian painter
who draws inspiration from postmodern art to create works of light, faces from the social scene and wild animals. She has worked for illustrious families and exhibits around the globe.
B
orn on 5 April 1973 in Modena, the artist Roberta Diazzi graduated in 1992 from “A. Venturi” Art College, specialising in graphic techniques.
Diazzi is beginning to make an impact as an artist and has collaborated with numerous important national and international galleries, as well as taking part in various fairs in Europe, Asia (Hong Kong, Seoul, Singapore) and the United States (Miami, New York). Currently, her work is on display in Saint Petersburg at the State Russian Museum (Russki Muzei) and at the Moscow Museum of Modern Art (MMOMA). Diazzi’s oil paintings are identified by a sign - a sort of signature which makes her work unique. However, the artist’s hand is truly found in the use of hundreds of thousands of certified Swarovski crystals of different sizes applied to backgrounds which are usually black to heighten the sparkle, light and colours of the crystals. They’re not so much paintings as they are mosaics of light, calibrated and re-cut to bring energy and power to the figures. As an artist, Diazzi is inspired by postmodernism, linked to the original, comics-derived stylistic revision of Roy Lichtenstein and of the Pop Art of Andy Warhol, who made his portraits a “must” for the VIPs of his time.

D
iazzi’s work has been commissioned by illustrious Italian families, including the Ferrari family, the Montezemolo family and also Luciano Pavarotti himself. For quite a few years, her work has also been sought-after abroad: in the Principality of Monaco, Princess Caroline displays her work “l’œvre pop de Monaco” in her royal study. Last chronologically but certainly not least, is the portrait of Peng Liyuan, catalogued among the most important works in the private collation of the Chinese First Lady.
10
www.webexpressguide.com
Today, Diazzi places some important stars, perilously at risk of being forgotten, alongside the famous faces of the social scene. She can also be defined as a nature painter portraying wild, regal and even ferocious animals peering out directly at the viewer. Prisoners within their frame, they set their sights on us, walk and fly towards us, who stand and watch as we gradually destroy their world. Art is necessity, and the necessity of Roberta Diazzi is to bring their roar or cry to our collective conscience.
mAIN FEATURE
That said, this artist from Modena is a thoughtful and eclectic painter: she often paints urban landscapes and vistas, showing signs of globalisation and the mix of artistic cultures typical of contemporary Neo-Pop, and which she, as a dynamic and sensitive artist, fully captures exactly. The result is therefore a picture in which the harmony of contrast combines with the appeal of the artistic style, giving the viewer the privilege of things done aesthetically well.

rECIPE
This Thai fish cake recipe employs wonderfully fresh Southeast Asian flavours for a distinct kick. The sweet chilli dip is remarkably easy to make, and it’s fab.
KOKOMO’s CHEF SAYS WHAT ABOUT
Thai Fish cakes with Sweet chilli dipping sauce?
INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • 12
700g of whiting fillet 35g of fish sauce 35g of thai red curry paste 20g of fresh coriander 70g of spring onions 90g of green beans 2 red chillies 5g of lemongrass 15g of caster sugar 80ml of water 10ml of lime juice 1 pinch of salt 130g of egg 50g of breadcrumbs 25ml of water 1 pinch of cornflour 175g of caster sugar 12g of fish sauce 1 pinch of salt 85ml of white wine vinegar 1 red chilli 1/2 garlic clove 1 tsp fresh ginger 20ml of sunflower oil
www.webexpressguide.com
METHOD
1. Place the whiting fillets in a food blender and blitz into a smooth paste. Add all the remaining ingredients except for the sunflower oil and mix well 2. Weigh the mix into 80g portions and then roll each portion into a ball 3. Place each ball on a board and flatten gently with the palm of your hand, so each ball is turned into a burger-shaped patty 4. Heat the sunflower oil in a heavy based frying pan and fry the fishcakes for 5 minutes on each side. Transfer the cakes to a preheated oven set to 165°C/ gas mark 3 and cook for a further 5 minutes 5. For the dip, mix the water and corn flour together to dilute the corn flour. Place all the remaining ingredients in a saucepan and bring to the boil 6. Once boiling, whisk in the water and corn flour solution and boil for another 1-2 minutes. Serve with the Thai fish cakes

BENAHAVÍS
A
part from the golf courses, beaches, and the landscape one of the most important attraction must also be the Mediterranean food, wine and olive oils. Although good restaurants and good food is available all over Spain one must not overlook Benahavís, a mountain village just 7 kms from the coast between Marbella, Estepona and Ronda. Benahavís is a gourmet delight and is referred to as the dining room of the Costa del Sol. 16

Readers who have followed our promotion of the BODEGON GALLERY in Benahavís I am sure will agree with us that it really is a rather special place. Not just a select, important Wine Club but a fully pledged rustic and elegant restaurant offering a first class cuisine with select wines to accompany each course or type of course. Next month, given the cooperation of the Mayor of Benahavís, Don José Antonio Mena Castilla, we now propose to introduce our readers on and off line to even more of the culinary specialities that make Benahavís such an exceptional location to visit.

Dermatology
Health
Skin Cancer Prevention “Now people are aware that not just melanoma but also skin ageing is related to sun exposure” Adolescents and young adults – the focus of dermatologists’ attention. The lack of interest in sun protection on the part of younger people greatly worries dermatologists. Despite the availability of unlimited information, having a tan and looking good is seems more important to them than the health factor.
Melanoma: when skin neither forgives nor forgets. 80% of the solar radiation reaching our skin is received before the age of 18; therefore adolescence is key to avoiding skin damage.
“Skin damage caused by exposure to the sun is cumulative; the patients we are seeing with skin cancer now are those who had excessive sun exposure in childhood and adolescence and who are now suffering the consequences” explains Dr. del Boz from the Dermatology Department. For example people born between 1940 and 1960, when no one was aware of the dangerous effects of exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays and, to make matters worse, healthcare professionals then believed that the sun was beneficial in every sense. In reality around 80% of skin cancer cases could have been prevented. >> Using sunscreen to prolong sun exposure time. Sunscreen protects well against ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation, but this is not the whole picture. Some lotions do not protect against ultraviolet A or infra-red radiation, with wrinkles and cancer resulting as long term effect. Also lotions are often not applied correctly reducing their effectiveness. This is why it is wrong to rely entirely on the sunscreen for very prolonged exposure to the sun. >> Sunbathing around the middle of the day. How often have our children asked to stay at the beach and eat with their friends? And then get home with a sunburnt back having forgotten to apply a sunscreen? The middle of the day is the most dangerous time with the highest radiation intensity. >> It is prudent to dry off and then re-apply the sunscreen after each swim. The effect starts to be lost after drying or rubbing with a towel. >> Not applying the correct amount. It is recommended to always use a sunscreen with a factor of 30 or above because we know that on average only a quarter or half of the recommended amount is usually applied. >> Not applying sunscreen when already tanned. Do not lower your guard! ALTHOUGH dark or very tanned skin has a higher sun resistance it does not mean it is protected from the damaging effects of solar radiation. These are just a few recommendations. If you are concerned that a mole has changed shape or colour, or you have a lesion that does not heal, or even if a new skin appears, it is always best to consult a dermatologist. So, if there is a problem, it can be detected and treated quickly in the simplest way possible.

GLUTEN FREE
The protein component of a number of grains including wheat, oats, triticale, rye and barley.
Extract from Bupa Health advice provided by Sonia Fendley, director of STM Nummos Life
What’s wrong with gluten? Although gluten-containing foods are a normal part of many people’s diets, some people have a condition that makes them sensitive to gluten and their immune system overreacts damaging the lining of the small intestine over time. This can interfere with their ability to break down and absorb nutrients in food, often leading to reduced absorption of necessary nutrients. Besides causing symptoms like fatigue, stomach cramps and diarrhoea, this untreated (celiac) disease can result in deficiencies in important nutrients like foliate and calcium, reproductive problems such as infertility and miscarriage and may increase the risk of osteoporosis and some cancers. Some people only have similar symptoms without the disease. This type of intolerance seems to be on the increase possibly due to how food is processed these days.
What if you suspect you have a problem with gluten? If you suspect you have a problem with gluten, there are good reasons to see your doctor first; an accurate and correct diagnosis requires evidence showing if the small intestine lining is damaged. If you’re being investigated for coeliac disease, it’s important that you don’t go gluten free on your own as it can affect the accuracy of the tests and the diagnosis. Self-diagnosing a problem with gluten and 32

avoiding grains containing gluten can leave you short on important nutrients.
What alternatives to grain foods can people eat on a gluten-free diet? There is currently no known cure for coeliac disease, but it can be managed with a glutenfree diet. If you have been diagnosed with coeliac disease or gluten intolerance, you need to know what foods to avoid, and what foods to replace them with to make sure you get all the nutrients you need. Apart from obvious foods such as bread, cakes and pasta made from grain products containing gluten, other processed products such as battered or crumbed meats, dairy products, canned vegetables, condiments, sweet and savoury snacks and even alcoholic drinks may also contain ingredients from gluten sources. However, you can still enjoy an interesting and varied diet, there are now many glutenfree products available. These include bread made with soy flour, rice flour and buckwheat, gluten free pastas, rice, brown rice, rice noodles, polenta, buckwheat, amaranth, lentils and quinoa. But just because a food says it’s gluten-free doesn’t always mean it’s healthy — like any other processed foods, some glutenfree products are also high in sodium and saturated fat. Many of them are also low in fibre. Always check the nutritional information on the label.

Summer and the moving hordes
The travel industry is now the largest employer worldwide contributing some 6.4 trillion dollars to the world’s economy, but is it destroying our world as we know it?
A
s soon as the travel season starts, it has become a standard practice to see local authorities boasting about the higher level of employment, followed by the news of greater unemployment claims at the end of the season. The ever growing world’s population and its growing hunger for finding the ideal locations for a truly memorable break certainly helps to improve the economy of those places blessed by nature for their attraction but is there a price to pay? Left unchecked and without some sort of control the influx of people can also destroy what was attractive to start with. The most recent example of this has been
shown on the news following a short Italian video that went viral within hours about a tiny village in Switzerlad. The comparison of Lavertezzo in Switzerland, just one hour’s drive from Milan, to the Maldives, showing a magnificent canyon crossed with emerald waters and people diving into it resulted in an unexpected influx of cars and visitors to the dismay of residents complaining that their beautiful valley was being turned into a an open air toilet by tourists running semi-naked in the streets. Not to mention the amount of litter left behind. Surely now hotels can be built, parking places created, restaurants and all those that www.webexpressguide.com

serve tourism as an industry which in the end drives out the locals who can’t afford the higher rents propelled by foreign demands while souvenir shops and highend foreign boutiques tend to replace the essential local services ranging from schools to clinics to bakeries and green grocers. That as it may does bring greatly desirable prosperity however the greater problem is created by the lack of respect that tourists show for the places they visit and the amount of littler they leave behind, often causing a pollution that seriously affects nature itself, especially on beaches by the sea. To prove the point, why has the following image in Facebook not gone viral? Lavetezzo is not the only place that Instagrams have ruined, if not instantly, certainly over a period of time. The tourists’ numbers to Santorini has reached such proportions that a limit has been imposed on the number of cruise ships visiting the Greek Island. If you care to search the internet you will find that some of the best and even most expensive locations are just not what they used to be as for instance Portofino 38

in Italy, Copenhagen “The Little Mermaid”, Barcelona and even the Great Wall of China where you have to elbow your way through the crowds. Yes of course the nations and local authorities that
want and do attract tourism need to cater for it. They need to find the equilibrium between number of tourists and available infrastructure; they also need to show some dutiful consideration for the residents who pay their local taxes and sustain the local

discourage some of the bad behaviour. You cannot have naked British tourists run naked in the streets such as we have seen in Magaluf they should be arrested and immediately deported back. Heavy penalties could be introduced for littering the streets and especially the beaches. Granted it does mean more policing but at least it saves the attraction to tourism. It is refreshing to learn that Marbella now will fine anyone male or female walking the streets without a shirt, risking a fine. Airlines are doing their part in discouraging drunken and disorderly behaviour, quite simply by calling the police on landing and having the person or persons responsible arrested.
government. Having said that, it would also seem that the tourists themselves need to be educated, they may have paid their money to entitle them to a good and fully enjoyable hioliday, but it
does not mean that they are allowed to spoil it for future tourists. Not an easy task when there are so many irreverent and ignorant people around, however I believe that the local authorities can help
Tourism is great but it has to be controlled and pitched at the right level to maintain a reasonable standard and quality of visitors. What is the point of having thousands of tourists that just come for the beach, even just for the day without spending any money, and by the same token I believe that the looky-looky men peddling their Chinese cheap rubbish should be barred from pestering visitors, especially in restaurants. www.webexpressguide.com

OPINION
LETTER TO THE EDITOR
The following letter (abbreviated)
was received by a reader who took exception at our last Prickly Pair article. I feel he has a right to voice his opinion therefore we publish it. Dear Editor,
I speak French but I am Belgian. I know your ‘Prickly Pair’ article is meant to be amusing but I found it a bit arrogant. After 8 years as an engineer in the merchant navy and having and enjoyed and blown away all my money at the age of 29, I decided to come to the Costa with my girlfriend and start a business and a family. This was in 1979, four years after Franco’s death. What you say about writers, starting a business here is not simple and easy and I am definitely not an old fart. In those days it was tough dealing with officials, getting denuncias with the police at the work shop every other day. It was just a small workshop 28m2 for 100,000 Pts. in Estepona port where there were still 6 different types of police: Green Guardia Civil, Blue Control de Aduana, brown Policia National, black Policia Municipal, White Comandancia de la Marina and the Malaga Vigilancia de Aduana Flying brigade where one could get a payment for making denuncias. Talking about uninteresting anecdotes, I am very sorry to say but I would never like to re-live again or wish onto anybody my first 6 years in Spain. Imagine, I arrived here with my girlfriend’s R5 and my BMW motorbike on a trailer and we got called “los capitalistas”. What we lived then was not an “uninteresting little anecdote” but a cruel reality. With regards to the 8th paragraph, I don’t think my life is more interesting, Spain was indeed a third world backwater: I got picked up for no reason, customs took whatever they could that did not seem to have legal paperwork, my bike was confiscated, 60% of my time was spent running after paperwork . They even wanted to put me on a plane back to Belgium, luckily then I had 2 children born here. I have may be 50 of these little stories and the b******s in the article upset me.
Obviously the author did not start a business or lived on the Costa in those days. Maybe he was one of those mentioned in para. 7, taking care of his villa, with an open car roof and English plates telling everyone how successful he had been at home or indeed as president of an urbanisation that they love so much to be. I have met so many such people coming to the Coast thinking they made it,
but I have seen them go back even quicker. Life was not that rosy after all. Yes I am still here, I survived it, and I can show my face everywhere with n-one pointing a finger at me. I am very proud of it and I "do" speak French . Best regards. www.webexpressguide.com

Did you know that..? On the 27 August 1955, the first ever Guinness Book of World Records was bound and printed in Fleet Street. Sixty years later, the book has sold more than 100 million copies in 37 different languages – and broken its own record for the world’s best-selling copyright book in the process. The book resulted from the frustration of Sir Hugh Beaver, then managing director of Guinness breweries, who was unable to verify his claim during a pub debate that the golden plover was Europe’s fastest game bird. Who is responsible opening it? Thank you Lord Sugar. It is about time someone spoke up and denounced those irresponsible people who effectively imparted lies to the voting population. Thank you for voicing the truth and stating that: Boris Johnson and Michael Gove should be in prison for Brexit lies. See video* Members of parliament are duty bound to tell the truth to the people they represent. The people who elected them to do the job of protecting them and the nation’s best interests. So why did they lie about the cost of the EU and the investment of 350 million pounds that would be invested in the NHS? There is no logical explanation other than for personal advancement and ambition. So much for caring about the people’s and the nation’s best interests. I would go further than sending them to prison I would bar them from politics for life and I would include Nigel Farage.
But I do not think this is the whole picture, all the British nationals living abroad for more than 15 years whose whole life would be greatly affected by Brexit, were not allowed to vote. Had they been allowed to do so the result of the referendum would probably have been a lot different. Who is to blame for this? Mrs Theresa May? Is she really any different, pursuing a cause that clearly means hanging on to Nº 10 by her fingernails? The best thing that should be done is to recognise the serious error that has been committed and either have the balls to retract art. 50, or at the very least, take a new referendum to verify the wishes of the people under the present knowledge of the truth. A real can of worm is being opened for the advantage of a few irresponsible clowns and to the detriment of what used to be a great nation and its people.

PRICKLY PAIR
FAKE LABELS!
It would seem that the designer goods industry is losing about 9 billion a year because of fakes.

PRICKLY PAIR
Good Heavens! Those lookie-lookie men down the various ports up and down the coast must be richer than I thought!
year olds in India can make them just as good?
Some advice is being offered on how to tell it’s a fake. Apparently paying only €10 for a pair of Gucci glasses after bargaining Mr Lookie down from €15 is not enough of a sign that they are fakes. Der!!
Let me pass on a tip. If half way through a DVD, bought from the said Mr Lookie man down at the port, you see people’s shadows walking in front of the film, the chances are it is a fake, as if paying €3 did not already start your alarm bells ringing.
I also assumed that Victoria Beckham, Ivana Trump, Kate Moss and their type would normally wear the real thing while the cheap, low class old dogs hanging around the port, drunk wear the fakes. May be I got it wrong but I don’t think so. Anyway I would assume that if they paid around €12.99 for a pair of shoes, their Dior glasses with diamonds are definitely a fake. Personally I would never buy through eBay. I can’t really knock it but if I was offered an 8 karats diamond ring for €15, my alarm bells would ring; or is it just me? There was another tip on an article; it said: check that the designer jeans are an actual photo of the jeans and not just a photo taken from the designer’s website. Surely, if I was going to con someone, the photo I would place on eBay would be the photo of an original, and, after receiving the cash, I would then send out the fakes. It also says that you should check the tag inside the jeans, but what if the con artist also placed a photo of the real designer’s tag on the site? Der, again!! Personally, I would not want to buy a fake, but if it were not for fakes, common women would never get to feel better than they really are. Anyway, if it is really that difficult to spot a fake, does it mean that the fakes are as good as the real thing? If so, why are the real goods so expensive and exquisite if four
Another thing if Mr Lookie man buys 100 pairs of Gucci sunglasses that would cost him thousands of Euros, so now listen carefully: - why would he sell them for €10? If he could afford to buy original Gucci glasses he would not have to drag around the port all night with all those glasses and certainly not alongside some €15 ebony elephants and an armful of fat ladies dresses (one size fits all). But still why stop at fake sunglasses? Why not fake boobs, 3 for the price of 2? Fake nails, fake hair - oh no that is acceptable, fake pout lips? Why pick on designer goods on eBay? And what about all these dating sites? “Athletic, good looking, caring man seeks lasting relationship”. Well come on ladies! Is that the biggest fake going? Or,“Cuddly, homely mature women” Fake! It really means fat old hag, still not taken, getting desperate. O.N.O. W.A.A. (will accept anybody). So for a bit of advice, Designer Labels lower your quality. Lower your prices and you could be €9 billion better off between you if Mr Lookie can do it so can you. Save your fake prices for your fake celebrities. www.webexpressguide.com
