editor page While one of the local papers is stating that the number of visitors is at record levels, at the same time the other paper expresses its concern at the lower number of visitors this year, in particular British. It seems you cannot believe what the papers say, so it’s best to use common sense, something that seems to be lacking more and more each year. Of course the number is down this year!! What do you expect with the terrible weather we have had so far this year all over the world? Oh well! Let’s do our job well! As an improvement to our service we are now in a position to tell advertisers the exact number of visitors they have had in our web pages, including when and even more. That certainly dispels any doubts and rumours. Pity it’s impossible to monitor how many calls they get through the adverts both online and printed.

WHATS NEWS

HONEY FRAUD Honey has never been so much in demand all over the world, especially Europe and the U.S.A., but is it really honey? Europe eats more honey than it produces, therefore it imports the rest and 50% of its honey imports come from China. The largest importers are the UK, Belgium and Spain. The odd thing is that, while naturalists seem to be concerned about the fall in the global drop of bees’ population, the amount of honey consumed greatly exceeds the total possible production of honey. At the same time, China has become the world’s largest producer of honey, with 473,600 tonnes produced in 2014 (compared to the EU’s 161,031). How is this possible? The answer is simple: FAKE HONEY & FRAUD. Sales of honey earned China $276.6 million (€231 million) in 2016.

Between 2000 and 2014, according to data from the Food and Agriculture Organization, its production has increased by 88% driven by a rise in exports. But the number of beehives over the same period only increased by 21%. China’s bee population is declining, like everywhere else in the world, due to pesticide poisoning, pollution, and a loss of bee habitat due to urbanization. So where does the Chinese honey come from? Unripe honey is harvested when it is still a watery soup with high water contents. It is then artificially dried, resin residues are eliminated by filtering, pollen may be removed or added to mask country of origin, and syrups are added to meet the different market prices. Quite recently China discovered that syrup created from rice and added to honey can remarkably increase the honey production while it is difficult to detect in a standards laboratory. Unfortunately greed is not a sin exclusive

6

Figure Rejected Honey Volume by Countries and Rejected Reasons by Import Batches

to the Chinese alone. Cheap Chinese honey has been an incentive for several European countries to import cheap honey from China and then re-export it as a local produce. As a result a number of European countries have seen their honey exports increase dramatically in parallel with their imports from China, mainly Spain, Slovakia, Portugal, Poland, Netherlands, Lithuania, Italy, Ireland, Germany and Belgium. The Chinese sanitary authority (AQSIS) is said to be severely controlling the quality of export honey. Can we believe it? It is a fact that fake honey has been driving down the price of bulk honey globally with the result that Chinese exporters now cannot compete with pure honey at current prices. They say that you are what you eat, but do we really know what we are eating? It really is up to us the consumers to be more aware of what we buy and what we eat, although sometimes it is difficult to do with some products when the correct labelling is not available.

The requirements for declaring the origin of honey are extremely low, most of the honey that you find is labelled blend of EU and non-EU honey but it does not tell you where it comes from. Counterfeit clothes, counterfeit labels, plastic rice, low hygienic standards fake foods and now also fake honey. You might never hear of Royal Jelly again! Perhaps some of us may not even know what it is. There is a desperate need to introduce a serious curb on Chinese imports and Chinese imports via third countries, labelling is not that effective when labels can be printed to say whatever one wants. It is high time that our governments start protecting their own people and even stop poisoning them for the sake of money. From where I stand it looks like China is getting wealthier at the expense of every man, women and child in our western worlds whilst fattening a few greedy politicians.

PROPERTY INVESTMENT

Build your own property in Spain To ensure a good investment in exactly what you wanted. By Sebastian Polinares Whether you are looking to own a residential or a commercial/industrial property, you can buy your own plot of land and build according to your own design and specs to the standard you require. True! But not that simple! Spanish red tape and their unusual ways of doing things can turn your project into a nightmare fraught with problems. That is unless you employ a professional architect/building management firm that will ensure and personally guarantee that your job is done according to your requirements, in the standard and quality you expect and, what is more important, within the specified time and costs. A slight deviation from the plan can make s serious difference between profit and loss. As we have illustrated in previous editions, if you are buying land, make sure that you are aware of the differences between Rustic and Urban plots, which can also vary between one local council and another. Considering the types of land, the building regulations, the required licences, the purchase of materials, the use of materials and the controls necessary to building within the 8

www.webexpressguide.com

costs and time required, it makes good sense to employ the services of a Spanish reputable architect that will guarantee adherence to the agreed budget and building time. Of course choosing the right firm is important and one such firms is MATECNO S.L. who undertake to investigate the feasibility of each project assimilating every aspect to present the promoter with two or three highly detailed budgets highlighting the differences in costs and advantages between different materials, qualities, builders and timing to completion They will cover every single possible aspect of the building procedure and report on a daily basis starting from licences, building permissions, compliance, architectural feasibility, just about everything including banking costs, notary’s costs and the rest. The importance to note is that Vicente Boscá, at the head of his team will guarantee adherence to the financial and timing budgets. He believes in making absolutely certain that any deviation from the forecast is an improvement and not a step back whilst maintaining the highest standard of quality desired.

Did you know that..? Statistic of the week. In the five months from June, more than 24,000 attempts were made to access “inappropriate” websites from the Houses of Parliament – even though Parliament was not sitting for much of that time. That amounts, on average, to 160 a day. Allegedly, most were accidental. The Times

Why a tipple may benefit your brain. Drinking two glasses of wine a day could be good for brain – and may even stave off Alzheimer’s a study suggests. Researchers found that consuming 1.5 pints of beer or two glasses of wine a day may reduce inflammation of the brain and help to clear toxins, including some which have been linked to dementia. However, the study involved mice, not humans…! Scientific Reports Brexiteers plot 'dream team' of Boris, Gove and Mogg. Boris Johnson, Michael Gove and Jacob Rees-Mogg are being lined up as a "dream team" by Brexiteer plotters. The Tory trio are reportedly planning to bid for power if Theresa May decides to remain in the customs union. However, under the headline "all for one, and none for all?". The Sunday Times Support for second EU referendum grows. British voters support the idea of a second EU referendum by a 16-point margin, according to an ICM survey for The Guardian. The study found 47% of people would favour having a final say on Brexit once the terms of the UK’s departure are clear, while 34% oppose reopening the question. The research also found that 43% of voters are worried Brexit will have a negative effect on the UK economy. The Guardian 12

Prostate cancer kills more than breast cancer. Prostate cancer has overtaken breast cancer to become the deadliest form of the disease in the UK, new research has revealed. Prostate cancer now kills 11,819 men every year, while breast cancer kills 11,442 women. Breast cancer death rates have been reduced by a national screening programme and significant research. Daily Telegraph. Children like digital assistants. A report has found that 42% of children aged nine to 16 use voice recognition technology, such as Apple’s Siri and Amazon’s Alexa. These are often useful for helping with homework, but the report warns that barking out orders to the devices risks making children less polite: the likes of Alexa do not demand a “please” or a “thank you”. Russian Ballet Association at Marbella Dance School Founded by Caterina Chisesi in 2007, the Marbella Dance School is the only Academy on the Costa del Sol permitted to examine and issue certificates based on the Vaganova Russian Ballet Method.

COVER FEATURE

The Russian Ballet Association, represented on the Costa del Sol by the Marbella Dance School, and whose Patron is the famous Bella Ratchinskaia, is dedicated to the teachings of the Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet, the school of classical ballet in Saint Petersburg, Russia, established in 1738 during the reign of Empress Anna. Graduates of the academy include some of the most famous ballet dancers, choreographers and teachers in history and many of the world's leading ballet schools have adopted the Vaganova Russian Ballet Method method into their own training. The Marbella Dance School academic year starts in September to 30th of June each year and quite recently a number of students have been examined and have obtained their relevant certificates according to their grades. Classes are available at all levels, including professional and tuition can begin with children from age 2.

Caterina, a professional ballet dancer herself since the age of 4, has made certain that the Marbella Dance School is now proven to be a great success with several teachers offering classes for both children from age 2 and adults at all levels, not just in Russian Ballet but also in Jazz, Hip Hop, Salsa, Flamenco, Yoga and more. The school’s students often publicly demonstrate their achievements in a theatrical performance at the Teatro Ciudad de Marbella and also at the Teatro Auditorio Felipe VI in Estepona. Their most recent choreographic performance, as announced recently is to be shown at the Teatro Ciudad de Marbella. Entitled “IMPULSES” the students will take the audience in a journey through dance. A journey intended to infuse the audience with feelings and emotions shared with the dancers. It is a contemporary representation of the new sounds and styles that make up the broad spectrum of dance. A performance that should not be missed, not just for the parents and families to be proud of what our Costa del Sol children and adults are capable of, but also as a symbolic demonstration of art and culture that does exists. www.webexpressguide.com

Nonsurgical Facial Rejuvenation You are 52 years old and you feel good, you have always taken care of yourself, exercised, watched your weight and followed beauty secrets to fix your first wrinkles. However, you abused the sun in your youth, the more suntan the better! Now you notice your skin is dull and limp, lacking life. Dark facial spots have appeared due to the excessive sun exposure! If you had only known‌ From the age of 50 on, due to hormonal changes and menopause, women’s skin loses elasticity and dries out, the oval of the face loses firmness and more wrinkles and expression lines appear in the face, neck, and cleavage. It’s now that you want to rejuvenate without losing naturalness, as the specialists recommend. There are different strategies to rejuvenate your appearance Additionally to the hyaluronic acid and toxin fillers, among those that we have already spoken about, nonsurgical facial rejuvenation treatments are prescribed based on either slight or moderate levels of aging. For those severe cases of looseness or hanging skin, it may be necessary to apply minimal invasive surgical techniques. In this article we focus on one of the most effective techniques for facial rejuvenation, the fractioned CO2 laser. The fractioned CO2 laser is a skin rejuvenation treatment It is true lifting, where the deepest layers of the skin are destroyed, withdrawing damaged collagen and encouraging the regeneration of new collagen. It is recommended for both the treatment of deep wrinkles, superficial wrinkles and expression lines.

30

www.webexpressguide.comHC

How does the fractioned CO2 laser work? The fractioned CO2 laser emits ultrafine beams of light that penetrate to skin to the dermis, alternating micro zones of vaporized tissue with those of intact tissue. The laser energy penetrates to the deep dermis, causing a thermal effect that stimulates collagen formation and regenerates the epidermis. A single session is enough to revitalize the collagen and it is not usually necessary to repeat it for 3 to 5 years. The treatment is done with cream local anesthesia, in the consultation. A surgeon is not required. Post-treatment care consists of smooth facial creams and antibiotic pomades to avoid any infections. The initial inflamed appearance disappears within 4 to 5 days, allowing the application of makeup. Sun exposure should be avoided, and it is necessary to apply sunscreen to avoid pigmentation. The treatment is very effective and there is a positive balance between discomfort and benefit. Various sessions may be needed in cases of keloid scar, caused by excessive tissue growth by burns, stings, piercings, etc.

Marbella International Hospital

HEALTH

A second session may be necessary, 6-12 months later for eye-lifts and stretch marks. By improving the texture of the skin with this technique, a more effective and longlasting surgical technique is achieved. You should know:

At HC Madrid we listen to you and carefully study your case in order to offer you the best recommendation possible. We will help you to regain your best appearance, in a comfortable, modern, and stress-free environment, where you will feel at ease.

The fractioned CO2 laser enjoys various recommendations: Facial rejuvenation: •

Reduction of wrinkles and improvement of expression lines

Improvement of scars (acne or surgical) and stretch marks

Pigmentation spots. Improve benign pigmented lesions, freckles, moles, brown spots, and liver spots caused by ultraviolet radiation, chloasma, and melisma produced by hormonal changes or pregnancy.

Vaginal rejuvenation(VINCULAR) •

The fractioned CO2 laser produces a thermal effect that stimulates the production of collagen in the cells and tissues of the vagina – allowing an effective, safe, and nonsurgical treatment to counteract the effects caused by pregnancy, births, age, or menopause, thus considerably improving the quality of life.

MY OPINION

Making a living in Spain It is well worth doing it well. Initially most of the residents on the Costa were retired British pensioners. As residents in ever increasing numbers with needs to live on the coast, they created a market for home repairs, food needs, etc. Available markets attract suppliers, in this case with the added bonus of climate and cheaper living. First came the cowboys, that’s the guys who made you believe they were experts and better than anyone at what they did. These mostly comprised builders and decorators, would-be financial experts, pension and insurance brokers and some but very, very few mortgage brokers (and that’s because you needed to speak Spanish to deal with lenders). To be fair, some were genuinely seeking to build their own little business while learning from their mistakes and improving as they went along, they were pioneers with no competition at the time. Learning at the expense of the consumer was marginally tolerated as long as the intentions were good.

But then there were the others, those who just did it for the money and for the day, the hell with the consequences. They included most of the p..s artists, who couldn’t get a job or keep it and those who just did it because they were, quite simply, dishonest. Up to some years ago, all these fantastic traders and service men who, by the way, did not speak a word of Spanish, only had one market, the foreign residents market of the Costa, using the English language inspire confidence. Although the Costa del Sol is still a small market, it has now evolved substantially; with the amount of growing discontent in other countries, the attractive Spanish climate and food as well as lower prices the ranks of foreign residents of all nationalities have grown substantially. The Coast without its foreign residents and foreign tourists would not present such an attractive proposition, especially after the chaos created by Brexit. Does this mean that things have changed? Hell no! It just means that there are more

37

MY OPINION

people at it with an additional slant to it. What I mean is that, in addition to watching out for the above described cowboys, you now have to realise that the number of opportunities available for new businesses is reducing fast with the result that the newcomers are creating a surplus supply of goods and services that are not really needed. Despite the fact that the market has grown and has become more varied the number of businesses competing with each other has grown out of proportion usually in the areas of business that does not require much capital to get it started. I mean, have you noticed the number of estate agents that have cropped up everywhere? What about the mortgage brokers and financial advisers? Isn’t that ludicrous when in fact you are probably better off dealing with any Spanish bank direct? To make things worse, the Spanish residents have learned to communicate in English and have learned how to cater for the foreign residents. What I believe needs to be realised is that after all this is Spain. Visiting Spain on a holiday is very different from living in it. Apart from the language, which is essential for dealing with banks, tax departments, the law and the way things are done can be very different from what one is used to in other countries. Anyone not able to run a successful business in his own country should forget about trying it on the Costa where it is actually much harder. It would be more beneficial all round to offer one’s skills and services to an employer. Just because it has worked somewhere or because someone else is doing something succesfully it does not mean that it will be so for you. How can it possibly bebetter than what others have already been doing for years? 38

www.webexpressguide.com

There is a genuine demand for good, loyal, trustworthy employees. Unfortunately the lack of such quality employees over the time has made employers very wary. Why not stick to what one knows, earn the trust and let the more experienced employer do the rest and save getting all that egg on one’s face when the money actually runs out? Wages may not be comparable with UK or Germany salaries but they certainly are

MY OPINION

adequate to keep in with the standards of living one is used to at home, probably even better. Just because we are on the Costa it does not mean that we can start leading the life of Hollywood film stars overnight. The real bonus is the healthier and happier life. Because of the growing level of businesses and competition between them it may sound like good news for the consumer when the cheaper price becomes the buying

motivation, unfortunately this can backfire because when prices are reduced below their real worth, quality of product and service has to suffer. A last word of advice, avoid businesses with no address and showing mobile numbers or using accommodation addresses and P.O. Boxes, they can vanish overnight. If they do not disclose their whereabouts they are hiding it for a reason www.webexpressguide.com

THAT'S LIFE

Why am I not scared of death? Now that is an unusual question!

“I have taken care of all my funeral arrangements with Francisco Camero, as you well know. I selected the type of funeral, the method of my burial, the type of ceremony, music and even guests’ list. I paid the cost of it all with one of your ‘Dignity pre-plans’ so as not to give anyone the trouble after my death and… to make sure it is done my way. I have done all this thinking about my inevitable end, yet I am not scared! Almost everyone I have talked to seems terrified about dying, why am I not scared?” While most of the questions that I am asked deal with the fear of death, I thought that this question put to me recently was quite out of the ordinary. Of course I cannot disclose the identity of the person nor can I say what was discussed in detail apart from the comments that follow. The most relevant aspect of all this is that this person has accepted the inevitability of death and disposed of one of the main worries regarding what happens immediately after death. Some say that once you are dead, you are dead, but all the same there is a concern as to what problems

one leaves behind for the survivors and whether the remains are dealt with according to one’s wishes and beliefs. Past that, it is useful to take a hint and decide in advance when you think you should pass away. Like making your own horoscope and predicting a date as far ahead in the future as possible and stop worrying about it until that day, which may probably be well past your prediction. There are many ways and products aimed at stopping aging, so turn your attention to these to help you determine as far ahead a death day as possible. When death comes, you won’t be there and when you are there it won’t come. Thomas Jefferson summed it in saying “Death is something to be expected but not feared of ”.

FINANCE

EXPENSES that are NOT tax deductible Claiming a non-deductible expense in your accounts can result in an increase of tax liability (when removed) and a fine. Find here a list of expenses that you cannot include in your books. . IVA paid in your purchases. (With one exception). Normally the IVA included in our purchases is treated separately and only the net non-IVA amount is a deductible expense. However if you make purchases in another EU country and obtain an invoice with foreign VAT you can include the total with VAT as expense. (As you cannot offset foreign VAT against the IVA collected in your sales you are allowed to offset it against Income Tax). Income Tax paid. The payments made for income tax are not tax deductible. However it’s a business deductible expense if the tax is paid for other reasons such as property tax (if the property is owned by the company) or if the tax is paid to the town hall to obtain a trading license. Fines and overcharges. Fines and overcharges paid to the Tax Office or Social Security are not tax deductible. To give an example, if we miss a payment of the regular autonomo fee we will need to pay a surcharge, yet we can only claim for the principal amount in our books. Paying back a loan. The paying back of a loan is not an expense, just as receiving a loan is not an income for which we need to pay tax. 44

www.webexpressguide.com

Confusion can arise if we use the loan to buy an asset. For example, assuming that we obtain finance payable over 4 years, to buy a car, obviously every repayment represents the payment for the car, therefore it can be considered a deductible expense… Logical as it may seem, the answer is no! The cost of assets is offset against tax as they depreciate, or lose value, along their utility life. The official depreciation tables indicate the scale of devaluation of assets. In the case of a car, the fastest it can be depreciated is 6.25 years. This means that even if we pay the car in less than that we can only offset a maximum of 16% of its value every year (16% for 6.25 years is 100% of the value) There are other concepts that are not tax deductible when they exceed a particular amount. In each of the following categories you will need to consider specific rules for each case. • •

PRET A PORTER

Plata (o plomo):

52

www.webexpressguide.com

PRET A PORTER

PRET A PORTER

PRICKLY PAIR

Has anyone found himself yet? Please do not contact the Prickly Pair direct but any hate-mail will be kindly received and passed on. Spain has been for many years the Nº1 ”fun in the sun” spot for families, 18-30 singles, stag & hen parties, etc. In fact since the 70’s, when Sir Freddy Laker (God bless him) opened up the ”Hi-De-Hi” horizons of the great un-washed, although the popularity of Spain as the first choice holiday for Mr and Mrs average does go up and down, like an up and down thing, there is still no denying the track record of a destination that, at the end of the day, does still offer guaranteed sun, reasonable good value and, let’s face it, cheap drink and fags. But lurking in the background, like an elusive scent behind the more familiar ’in yer face’ pong of coconut after sun and Hawaiian Tropic, is that almost extinct creature, the “went away to find myself ”. Back in the swinging 60’s, when, if you didn’t disappear up some mountain, you were the odd one out, Spain was great because it is full of mountains without being too far away and needing five years grant money to get there; and although you didn’t get to meet the Dalai Lama, no doubt you were too stoned to know that Jose from Jimena wasn’t in fact the Dalai Lama. So, forty plus!! Yes, forty plus years later, what has happened to these higher mortals? 58

www.webexpressguide.com

Ibiza, 1976. Oriol Maspons Well, scratch under the surface of the everyday folk, living and working and leading ordinary lives in Spain, and let’s face it not as windswept and interesting as they would have their green with envy friends back in Blighty believe, and there they still are, as reclusive as a badger with a secret, but still spreading peace, love and bad paintings around like confetti. Listening to me, you would think that I have some kind of chip on my shoulder in respect of these lentil-eating, dog saving, bad art campo dwellers. On the contrary, in fact I think we need more of them! My family and I lived in Spain, the “Real Spain” that is, over forty years ago, in what was then an unspoiled mountain village,

PRICKLY PAIR

and, although I was a child at the time, I was privileged to have met some of the original “Scooby Doo” types. Now I am living on the Coast and, to be frank, I am finding it a bit like Great Yarmouth with palm trees. One English bar, near where I live, even has a group of ladies of genteel disposition who meet to play Bridge and drink lemon tea. Yes, Bridge if you don’t mind! You cannot move for the ‘Big Screen Sport’s Bars’ and even the Spanish bars sell bacon without bristles! Where will it all end? So what happened to the ‘Free Spirits’? I hate to say it, but they seem to have become respectable; there are a few old timers happily smoking and drinking themselves slowly to death, and, fair play to them, I am glad to say not a compromise in sight. But on the whole, the new crop has wandered a long way from the path of enlightenment. The modern day ‘Velma and Shaggy’ come to us hot foot from a killing on their Right-

to-Buy council house, bringing a variety of elderly pets with them, two point four scared stiff children and an outdated desire to find and buy a bit of the “Real Spain”. It is a sad fact, however that the “Real Spain” has long gone, Jose from Jimena sold it to Taylor Woodrow for more millions than he could fit on his mulo; and anyway, could these modern day drop outs from society really live in the ‘Eldorado’ of the past? Way back then the’ finca’ on the campo consisted of four damp walls, a leaky asbestos roof, no water, no electricity and no toilet facilities, a place that even “Man Friday” would swim to freedom from. So what does all this tell us? Quite simple really, the “Real Spain” has been sold, the Spanish bars have sold out, the ‘finca’ on the campo is a home from home and the original free spirits had necks as hard as jockeys b****cks!! So did anyone ever really ever find himself or did he just get lost trying? www.webexpressguide.com

FAR CRY 5

GOD OF WAR

The game takes place in the fictional Hope County, Montana, where charismatic preacher Joseph Seed and his cult The Project at Eden's Gate holds a dictatorial rule over the area. The story follows an unnamed Junior Deputy, who becomes trapped with their task force in Hope County and works alongside factions of a Resistance to liberate the county from Eden's Gate.

Many years have passed since Kratos took his vengeance against the Olympian gods. Having survived his final encounter with Zeus, Kratos now lives with his young son Atreus in the world of the Norse gods, a savage land inhabited by many ferocious monsters and warriors. In order to teach his son how to survive in such a world, Kratos must master the rage that has driven him for many years and embrace his newfound role as a single father and mentor. Kratos must also contend with the Norse gods themselves as they are taking precautions against him, due to them being aware of his role in the destruction of Olympus
