Christmas & New Year on the Costa del Sol
I think that this year many will spend Christmas & New Year in Spain Unfortunately there is so much trouble everywhere else that staying in Spain and celebrating the festivities right here in Spain is probably the best bet, however much the airlines are reducing their prices. 8

Although the 25th is more of a family and religious celebration, the Spanish traditionally celebrate their “gift giving” on the 6th of January, when, according to belief, the Three Kings arrived at the grotto, following the Star. New Year is another story when traditionally the first minute of the New Year is welcomed with the eating of 12 grapes, one for each stroke of the clock from midnight. Christmas in Spain can be quite a treat because nowadays Xmas is also celebrated on the 25th and the feast does not end until the 6th January. The giant multi-billion euro lottery, splendid nativity scenes, lots of great food and loads of good food and meals certainly make their mark during this season. Some may say that you need snow at Christmas, although the Costa is mild by comparison, it can get quite cold and you do not have far to go inland to find the snow with the result that different traditions have developed in different parts of Spain. For instance, December 21st, the shortest day of the year, is celebrated in Granada and nearby Jaen by jumping through bonfires for the fiesta de Las Hogueras. We are taught that children shouldn’t play with fire, however in these parts it is said to keep illness away. On December 22nd, El Gordo, the massive
Spanish lottery, is drawn, everybody plays it and they start selling it in August! Christmas Eve is the most important part of Christmas in Spain and the dinner that day is the biggest meal of the year, but there is nothing as ubiquitous as turkey. Most bars will be closed on Christmas day and there won’t be many restaurants open. It is when families unite as a follow on of the 24th. The only rule is that people eat well. Lobster is very common, and a roast of some sort is essential, usually lamb or suckling pig. In addition to all this, most families will also have fish soup and an abundance of other seafood, cheeses, hams and pates. Dinner starts late, at about 10pm and will go on for a couple of hours. Proceedings are interrupted at midnight by the chimes of the local church, calling worshipers to the misa del gallo’ (Mass of the Rooster), so called because it is said that a rooster crowded on the night Jesus was born. The most relevant ‘misa del gallo’ takes place at the Benedictine monastery at Montserrat near Barcelona. www.webexpressguide.com

Although some exchange of gifts is done on Christmas Eve, children will often get a little something, but they really have to wait until January. Couples will normally spend Christmas Eve with one set of parents and Christmas Day with the other. By the evening of the 25th, most shops and bars are open again and these days more and more youths have started going out on the town. Did you know that you can celebrate New Year as many as six times in Spain?

The first New Year’s Eve in Spain usually comes in on the second Thursday before Christmas. It is the Noche Vieja Universitaria (University New Year), which takes place in Salamanca. The University New Year is for students of the famous university who are unable to celebrate the normal New Year with their friends because of family commitments.

Next up is midday (not midnight) on December 30, at the Puerta del Sol in Madrid, for the bell-ringing rehearsal. Again, this is done for those who can’t attend the real celebration because of prior commitments or for those who can’t handle the idea of all the crowds that will congregate on the actual day (Puerta del Sol is as busy as Times Square or Leicester Square on New Year’s Eve).

Later, on the same day is the Alternative Bell-Ringing for Geeks which takes place at Plaza de Castilla, in front of the Pac-Man tree they set up there! The Spanish ‘friki’ (geek or nerd) subculture is quite big.

Also on December 30, at 8pm, the town of Lepe celebrates New Year’s Eve early (and they celebrate it again the following day too!).

Then, of course, comes the real New Year’s Eve on December 31. You may be surprised that, for a country famous for its drinking, that most bars will be closed on the stroke of midnight. This is because most people will be busy eating the 12 grapes for luck. However, the city’s main square will certainly give you that communal New Year’s feeling. Then, the parties are later.

Lastly, there is New Year’s Eve in August, which takes place in the tiny village of Berchules on the first Saturday of the month. Why? Because a power cuts in the mid-nineties meant that New Year’s Eve had to be cancelled, so they rescheduled the big event for August. The re-run was such a success that they have run this second New Year ever since! Whatever you do, don’t forget your grapes... good luck!

What is Shiatsu
Shiatsu is a natural healing technique that is taken very seriously in Japan In Japanese, SHIATSU means “finger pressure”, a technique that includes massage by pressure using fingers, thumbs, feet and palms. CHRISTMAS RECIPE:
Rosemary Citrus Glazed Ham Ingredients • • • • • •
1/2 cup brown sugar 1/4 cup Dijon mustard 1 tablespoon minced garlic 2/3 cup orange marmalade 1/3 cup grapefruit juice 1 tablespoon fresh rosemary, finely chopped • 1 teaspoon salt • 1 Smoked Ham
Method 1. In a medium sauce pan whisk together brown sugar, mustard, garlic, marmalade, grapefruit juice, rosemary, and salt. Bring to boil over medium heat; reduce to low and simmer 6-8 minutes. 2. Preheat oven to 375˚F. Place ham in large, greased roasting pan. Pour glaze over top of ham, covering as much surface area as possible. Loosely cover with foil and bake for 1 hour. Remove from oven and baste ham with sauce from bottom of pan. 3. Increase oven temperature to 425˚F. Return ham to oven, uncovered, and bake an additional 30-45 minutes, basting ham with sauce from pan every 15 minutes.
This year I think we should try something less boring than the traditional turkey, duck or lamb. A nice smoked ham seems like a great alternative! 24

4. When ham is finished baking, allow to rest for 20 minutes before carving. Just before serving, spoon any remaining sauce in the pan over the carved ham. Serve warm.

To me this translates into a sense of insecurity and even a feeling of lack of purpose, a purpose and a reason that require an answer. I regret to say that this is also a weakness, something that some people exploit to the 38

Psychological abuse is equivalent to psychological violence, emotional abuse, or mental abuse, characterized by a person subjecting, or exposing, another person to behaviour that may result in psychological trauma, including anxiety, chronic depression, or post-traumatic stress disorder. Abusers have learned to abuse in order to get what they want including, often, money. The abuse may be physical, sexual, emotional, psychological and even financial. Abuse is an intentional act that one person uses to control another. The result can be devastating on the abused, resulting in anxiety, chronic depression, paranoia, suicide, schizophrenia or posttraumatic stress disorders, to name a few. Both Google as well as YouTube, give internet users the opportunity to report abusers but they only pre-classify them as follows: Spam, malware, phishing, Violence, Hate speech, Terrorist content, Harassment, bullying, Threats, Sexually explicit material, Child exploitation, Impersonation, Personal and confidential information, Illegal activities, Public streaming, Copyright infringement, Content use and submission Harassment and cyber bullying, Copyright issues, Hijacked account, Flagging videos, Privacy issues, Suicide threats.

Camouflaging under “preaching one’s belief and freedom of speech”, unfortunately the rogues who twist people’s minds for their own gain or satisfaction seem to escape the present preventive measures. It would seem that most of the problem originates from the United States, although it seems it is fast catching on elsewhere. I do not know what the answer is and how the evil aspect of this can be discouraged. Would it make sense to introduce some sort of an official licensing permission to be granted, subject to vetting and approval of use? Should we have a special Internet Police body to catch them out? One thing seems certain, the problem is growing.

is that doggie in the window?! It does seem like a good idea to surprise someone you care for with a cuddly little dog or a fluffy cute kitten, they are adorable. Unfortunately you must remember that animals cannot be returned to the shop or exchanged. Your children may well be begging for you to get them a pet but are they going to look after it after the first few days? Of course a pet as a present for someone you care for is but before you do it may be a good idea to think carefully:

Always ask first. Never give someone a pet as a surprised gift. Even if you know that the person wants a pet, you need to be sure which kind of pet they want before you buy them one.

Give pets to immediate family only. Buying someone else’s child a puppy or giving your friend a new pet kitten is not a good idea, even if you think they want one.

Make sure they can care for the pet properly. Before you buy anyone a pet, you need to make sure that the pet will be properly cared for.
Avoid impulsive decisions. Buying a pet is not a decision that should be taken lightly and it is certainly not something you should do on a whim, it is a decision the whole family needs to be in on.
Before you buy that fluffy puppy in the window at the pet store as a gift for your child or loved one, think carefully about whether it is really the right choice, you do not really want the poor creature to end up in a shelter or worse abandoned in the street.

N e w Ye a r ’s E v e C h a m p a g n e P u n c h While partying and waiting to pop the champagne cork at midnight, warm up with a tasty champagne cocktail. This simple mixture of Champagne and orange juice was “invented” in 1925 at the Ritz Hotel in Paris by bartender Frank Meier. He used as 50/50 mixture of orange and champagne but it may be better to lean more towards the Buck’s Fizz for a dryer, more Champagne-forward brunch beverage. INGREDIENTS 2 OZ ORANGE JUICE 4 OZ CHAMPAGNE Pour the Champagne into a flute. Top with orange juice. Do not stir the drink, it will mix together on its own. ALTERNATIVELY pour an entire bottle of Champagne into a pitcher, topping it up with half a gallon of freshsqueezed orange juice.
There are endless variations on the Mimosa. Some of our favourites include floating a half-ounce of Grand Marnier on top for a Grand Mimosa and experimenting with different types of juices, like blood orange and pomegranate (throw in some seeds for a sparkling winesoaked snack when you’re done). If you replace the orange juice with peach purée, congratulations, you’ve just made a Bellini.

What’s new for the 2018 income declaration? Officially, from the 4th April, tax payers will be able to file their return by phone and via the web as well as downloading the tax forms on their mobile. Although there are not many novelties affecting tax declarations, it is well worth noting if some of the following basic ones could apply to you. The refund of the land clause is not taxable The refund of amounts paid on a mortgage subject to the abusive “soil” clause do not have to be declared nor does any tax need to be paid on any compensation so received. Tras la muerte de Savita Halappanavar, la investigación demostró que hubo 13 oportunidades para salvar su vida durante los siete días que estuvo bajo supervisión médica si se le hubiera permitido abortar el feto de 17 semanas de edad. El caso de Savita se convirtió en el medio para pedir un referéndum histórico en Irlanda en el que más de un 65% de la población apoyó la derogación de la octava enmienda del país que hacía imposible que las mujeres abortaran aún con riesgo de muerte para la madre. Así es la carta abierta de Emma Watson en homenaje a Savita Halappanavar y a favor del aborto: No querías convertirte en el rostro de un movimiento. Querías una intervención que te salvara la vida. Big jugs Dear prickly Pair, Mine is not so much a problem as more of a question. I have been left a pair of large jugs in my grandmothers will; they date from the Victorian era and are very ornate in the typical Victorian style. I live in a very modern warehouse conversion and, try as I may, I cannot find a suitable location for them and they are of no value according to the auction house. You are obviously a bit of an insensitive cow. the fact that you have already had the vultures from the auction house around to value your poor old granny’s legacy shows that you have a cold side to your nature, I personally couldn’t bear the thought of a bunch of strangers handling my old girls jugs. Consider what they meant to your family; maybe they were a wedding present all those years ago? And your grandfather would have had many years of pleasure from your granny’s old jugs. Don’t be negative; there is always a place for a pair of mature jugs, just stand them proudly erect and close together as a constant reminder of all the years of pleasure your granny had playing with her big old jugs! 58
