EDITOR PAGE This year has been a much troubled year for everyone at all levels and I cannot say I am sorry to see it go. Between the USA elections, the uncertainties caused by the UK government with Brexit and the pandemic the repercussions have been and still are very serious. But every cloud has a silver lining and there is finally a glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel. The production of the vaccine, the conclusion of the USA elections and the finalisation of Brexit, with or without a deal, seem to indicate that we can possibly look forward to the start of normal life from April. All that remains to do in the meantime is to thank all our readers and advertisers for their support and to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and much better New Year.

WHATS NEWS

Did you know that..? Officials in Brussels say Brexit is 95% agreed. European Union officials believe a Brexit deal is 95% agreed. At a meeting of the most senior diplomats in Brussels, they were briefed about the state of Brexit talks by the European Commission’s Secretary General Ilze Juhansone, who told them the legal text of a trade deal was now finalised in almost all areas, covering almost all subjects. Sky News

Husbands ‘thrilled’ if they earn more than wife. A study has found that husbands feel a thrill if a pay rise widens the gap between their earnings and those of their lower-paid wives. However, the researchers found that women do not experience an ego boost if the tables are turned. The stereotype of the male breadwinner may still be bigger than we give credit for. The Sunday Times

Asia forms world’s biggest trade bloc. Fifteen Asia-Pacific countries signed the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), forming the world’s biggest trade bloc. The deal brings together Southeast Asia, China, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand - or a third of the world’s population - to lower tariffs and promote trade and investment in the region. First proposed in 2012, the deal is absent India, which withdrew on fears that local industries would be hurt by imports. It also does not include the US, which in 2017 left the Trans-Pacific Partnership, another Asiafocused mega agreement. Reuters

A radical idea to boost the economy. The only real growth as we recover from this epidemic is going to come from the gig and hustle economy. Lots of high-earning selfemployed professionals could be a lot more effective if they took on an assistant. But they don’t because it immediately traps them in the whole nightmare of employment law and tax and pension regulations. It would be easy to exempt the first employees from all those rules. Likewise, how about a £5,000 tax-free hustle allowance that allows people a side gig they don’t have to pay tax on? Both would create jobs. Editor

Covid-19 sees a surge in early retirement. The number of people retiring before the age of 65 rose by more than 55,000 as the UK went into lockdown, official data reveals, suggesting that Covid-19 may be driving an increase in early retirement. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said that in the March to May period of this year, the number of under-65s describing themselves as “retired” was 55,311 up on November 2019 to January 2020. THE BEST CONSUMERS’ MARKET ON THE COSTA is the middle represented by high level consumers who need to know you

To be known on the Costa you need to advertise your message all the time because PEOPLE COME AND PEOPLE GO CONSTANTLY Too many social media pages with announcements of short duration are time consuming for limited exposure.

Unless you can afford to advertise on National Radio and Television Channels your audience is limited to a few locals and only sometimes.

Unless you are as well known as Johnnie Walker or Pepsi Cola driving past large signs on the roads is not the answer.

Too many cheap publications promoting illegal businesses, leaflets and means to save money cannot have the desired effect on the desired market.

PRINTING IS YOUR BEST ANSWER BUT... Newspapers are expensive, they are not designed to target/reach your desired consumer, they do not represent the quality of your business and they mix your business with too many others including competitors.

Quality, expensive looking magazines are a good option but the cost is high and they do not justify the return.

Christmas and New Year? From family bubbles to keeping ski resorts closed, European leaders are having to make unprecedented and unpopular choices due to covid-19

What is certain is that the festive season is not going to feel the same this year. Governments across Europe have been holding meetings in recent days to work out how they can allow families to get together without risking a dreaded third spike in coronavirus cases. It comes as mini-lockdowns appear to be putting a cap on a second wave of infections that began after a summer of relaxed restrictions in the region.

14

www.webexpressguide.com

From family “bubbles” to no fireworks, the U.K., France, Italy and now Germany have released further details of what will, and will not, be allowed this Christmas and New Year. Scientists have warned a relaxation of critically important public health measures over the Christmas period could lead to greater transmission of the virus, and potentially further deaths. There are hopes that the holidays might be able to retain some merriment so here is what Europeans can expect this year.

SPAIN / ANDALUCIA Each region will have its own rules depending on where you live. In Andalucia new measures will come into force after the current rules end on Saturday 12th December. The restrictions will be eased in two phases, from 12 to 17 December and 18 December to 10 January. PHASE ONE In the first phase, people will be able to move between municipalities within the same province. Shops will be able to open until 9pm, but bars and restaurants will have to close at 6pm as now. The night curfew remains at 10pm during the first phase.

PHASE TWO From 18 December until 10 January, movement from province to province across the region will be permitted. The curfew will be put back to 6 am to 11 pm and shops can go back to their normal opening hours. Bars and restaurants must close at 6pm, but can open again between 8pm and 10.30pm. On Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve the curfew moves to 1.30am. Between 23 December and 6 January, travel outside the region will be permitted to meet up with family members. On 24, 25 and 31 December and 1 January gatherings of up to ten people will be allowed, although the limit remains at six for the rest of the period.

NB: this is information (E & OE) is indicative of the restrictions as we know them at the time of printing. Please make check carefully within your own area to avoid possible hefty fines. LEAVE YOUR COMMENTS ON OUR BLOG ONLINE AT FOOT OF ARTICLES

FRANCE •

The French President Emmanuel Macron unveiled that the second national lockdown will gradually begin to be lifted and shops be allowed to reopen.

Then, from Dec. 15, lockdown in France will be lifted further if the health situation permits. This could allow people in France (who under lockdown could not leave their homes without specific reason, to go food shopping, for example) will be able to travel around the country and to see family and friends.

A curfew will remain in place between 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. but this will not apply on Christmas Eve, or on New Year’s Eve, although no big public gatherings will be allowed.

For skiing fans, there might not be such a merry Christmas this year, with President Macron saying in a televised address that a decision has not yet been made over whether ski resorts will be allowed to open this year.

You can only meet your christmas bubble in private homes or in your garden, places of worship, or public outdoor spaces

You cannot meet someone in a private dwelling who is not part of your household or christmas bubble

After a month-long lockdown is lifted on Dec. 2, England will return to a tiered system in which the severity of restrictions on social gatherings will be dictated by the infection rate in that area. In all tiers, from Dec. 2, Non-essential shops will be allowed to reopen, as well as gyms, hairdressers and churches. Whether pubs, bars and restaurants are allowed to admit customers will depend on the tier they’re in.

Cinemas and theatres will be allowed to reopen on Dec. 15 although bars, restaurants and gyms will remain closed until later in January.

U.K. The four nations that make up the U.K. (England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland) came to an agreement to allow families across the kingdom to get together at Christmas, recognizing that separate policies could play havoc with families spread across Britain. The U.K. government said that restrictions on social gathering will be relaxed between Dec. 23 and 27, allowing up to three households to form an “exclusive ‘Christmas bubble.’” namely:

ITALY

ITALY

Italy’s prime minister also set out the country’s rule relaxations telling the nation that while he had ruled out big gettogethers at Christmas, the country should not have any so-called high Covid-risk “red zones” by the time of the holidays.

Italy too has a tiered system of areas or zones in the country designated as high, medium and low-risk areas. Red zones are currently under a second mini-lockdown with people not allowed to leave their homes unless for specific reasons and most shops and other public venues closed.

If the contagion trend continues downward, there won’t be any more red zones in December, according to ANSA news agency. However occasions for socialising in the Christmas period cannot be allowed, starting with indiscriminate holidays on the snow.”

If red zones are lifted in time for Christmas, Italians will be able to visit family elsewhere in Italy. For now, however, Calabria, Lombardy, Piedmont and Valle d’Aosta are red zones with residents unable to leave until Dec. 3.

In the run up to Christmas (starting December 1) the number of people that can meet socially will be limited to five, but this will then be raised to 10 people over the Christmas and New Year period (Dec. 23 to Jan. 1) to allow friends and family to meet (children under 14 are exempt from the limit).

Germans are being encouraged to avoid contacts for seven days before Christmas to try to minimize the chance of infection.

New Year’s Eve could be a quieter affair in Germany this year, with the letting off of fireworks in public areas banned in “busy streets and squares.” Ski tourism has also been banned until at least January 10.

GERMANYITALY German Chancellor Angela Merkel met with federal state leaders to decide on what restrictions to lift for Christmas, just as the number of daily cases of coronavirus and deaths from Covid-19 remain worryingly high in the country that has, until recently, seemingly been less badly affected by the pandemic than its neighbours. •

Germany’s 16 states, which have largely been allowed to set their own restrictions, came together with Merkel and decided to extend what’s been seen as a “lockdown lite” (with shops and schools open but bars and restaurants shut) until Dec. 20, in order that the restrictions can be relaxed over Christmas — before they are then tightened up again into January. “This is absolutely not the time to sound the all-clear,” Merkel said on Wednesday in a press conference after meeting state leaders.

OPINION

FINANCE

Why is it that some people

do not pay their bills? With the wisdom and experience acquired in my advanced age I find that nothing can dampen your enthusiasm more than not getting paid for the work done or supplied.

FINANCE

On the one hand it makes you angry and on the other it can make you feel depressed, especially you cannot pay your own bills because of it. I have come to the conclusion that there are just two main reasons why people do not pay their bills: 1) They just Cannot Pay Their Bills. For some reason, usually outside of their control, they cannot afford to pay an account or their bills. Loss of a job/redundancy: Losing one’s job or being made redundant, is one major reason people find themselves suddenly unable to afford to repay their debts and monthly bills. Medical Issues: Not being able to work due to illness is once again out of your control. When you want to pay your bills and you cannot due to not having the money, it creates a double stressful situation. Bad Cash Flow Planning: Lack of reserve capital to face unexpected eventualities in business, forcing suppliers to involuntarily provide a shortfall or lack of bank support. 2) They Just Do Not Want To Pay Their Bills. There are times when people just don’t want to pay their bills, and while it can fall under not being able to pay the bills, there is a conscious decision being made not to pay them.

Sociopaths: Oddly enough, there are those people that feel society’s conventions are not meant for them. They are sociopathic in how they live their lives. Not paying bills means giving reasons and making excuses. Some of these reasons are like the “dog ate my homework” excuse that a child may give. The cheque is in the post: pretending the payment or bank transfer has gone astray. Fear of a low balance: Not paying a bill for not wanting to see the bank account balance drop. New bank account: “I have opened a new bank account and have not transferred my direct debits over yet”. Issues with prioritising: There are those people that struggle in deciding what bill is to be paid first and what is further down the billchain. December – January: Some people do not pay their bills in December so they can have a good Christmas, before tackling the bills in January. Not a good excuse. It should be noted that unless someone falls into category 2, and just does not want to pay bills, the majority of lenders and creditors are willing to help those who believably want to honour their commitments.

Substance Abuse: If someone has an alcohol or drug addiction, paying their bills is one of the last things on their minds. Fortunately once they stops paying their bills, their credit gets trashed can no longer get credit, loans or accounts. Kindness Abusers: The downside is that some people live a perfectly good and normal life, and then go off the rails, and choose to stop making payments.

RECIPE

Orange–Coriander Glazed Ham

INGREDIENTS • 1/2 fully cooked bone-in ham (about 7 lb total; preferably shank end) • 3 tbsp. coriander seeds or 1 1/2 tsp ground coriander • 1 1/2 tsp. black peppercorns • 1 jar orange marmalade (about 1 1/2 cups) • 1/4 c. white wine vinegar or cider vinegar

METHOD 1. Heat oven to 375°F (190ºC). Place the ham, cut-side down, on a rack set in a roasting pan; add 1/4 cup water to the pan. Score the ham, if desired. Cover the ham and the pan with foil and bake for 40 minutes. 2. Heat oven to 375°F. Place the ham, cut-side down, on a rack set in a roasting pan; add 1/4 cup water to the pan. Score the ham, if desired. Cover the ham and the pan with foil and bake for 40 minutes. 3. Meanwhile, using a heavy pan, crush the coriander seeds and peppercorns; place them in a bowl. Add the marmalade and vinegar and whisk to combine. Transfer 1/2 cup of the glaze to a small bowl and reserve for serving. 4. Brush half the remaining glaze (about 1/2 cup) over the ham and bake, uncovered, for 20 minutes. Brush the remaining glaze over the ham and bake until the ham is heated through and the internal temperature registers 140°F, 15 to 20 minutes more. Serve with the reserved glaze.

DEEP SLEEP CAN PROTECT FROM ALZHEIMER’S During deep sleep the brain eliminates waste products that increase the risk of Alzheimer’s disease

If you have an activity measuring bracelet, it is very likely that it will tell you how many hours of total sleep you sleep per day, and of those, how many hours of deep sleep. Deep sleep is the phase in which it is most difficult for us to wake up, the activity of the brain remains low and cell regeneration occurs. Nothing to do with REM sleep, in which the brain is active dreaming. Without enough deep sleep we wake up tired and groggy. A new study from the University of Berkeley published in the journal “Current Biology” has found that this phase of deep sleep can help reduce levels of the proteins beta-amyloid and tau, two of the risk factors for Alzheimer's disease. Poor quality of sleep has been known for decades to be linked to long-term problems with memory and cognition. During the 32

www.webexpressguide.com

experiment, the levels of beta-amyloid accumulated during sleep were measured by 32 people out of 70 using a brain scanner. The results show that people who slept less soundly had more beta-amyloid. Other studies have found that a lack of deep sleep is associated with higher levels of tau, another protein found in the neurons of people with Alzheimer's. In 2019 it was discovered that during the night there is a greater transfer of brain fluid that coincides with the slow brain waves of deep sleep. Scientists propose that during deep sleep the brain "washes" itself, removing both beta-amyloid and tau. This is very important for people with sleep apnea, in which the airway becomes blocked and leads them out of deep sleep. These people are at higher risk of dementia in old age.

HEALTH

Early checkups are important to prevent lung cancer Pneumological diseases are highly prevalent and of great importance, unfortunately people are not aware of it. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer mortality in the world, responsible for 28% of the annual cause of death, above breast or prostate cancers.

Dr. Aguilar Perez Grovas, Ricardo Specialist in Pulmonology

It is a silent disease, normally showing no symptoms in the early stages because the lungs do not have the capacity to produce pain. The disease begins to be noticeable when the more severe symptoms appear in advanced stages, usually stage 4, when it may be too late to administer a curative treatment.

34

www.webexpressguide.com

This is why it is very important to carry out an adequate program for the early detection of diseases such as lung cancer. Dr Ricardo Aguilar, specialist in pulmonology at the HC Marbella international hospital, tells us about the importance of early checkups for the detection of lung cancer.

Who should make a lung checkup?

How often should I make a checkup?

Tobacco use is the main cause for lung cancer and it represents 80% of cases. The risk is higher depending on the number of packages / year smoked and the duration of exposure.

It depends on the person, their backgrounds, age, and risk factors. After a first evaluation based on the results and the risk factors, it may be recommended to repeat the checkup every year or every 3 years depending on the case.

People over the age of 50 who are at high risk of respiratory diseases such as smokers or exsmokers or patients with a pulmonary history of lung cancer should have a lung checkup. What is involved? Checking for lung diseases is very simple. An initial consultation is carried out by the pulmonologist performing a physical examination to investigate the general condition of the patient. We then perform a spirometry to carry out a complete study of the lungs condition and capacity, and finally a low-radiation chest CT scan is performed to loosely examine the morphological status of the lungs and check that there are no suspect lesions.

To what extent are they important to prevent any health problems? Since 2018, thanks to a European study called Nelson, it has been proven and established that lung cancer screening programs are as effective as a mammogram, cytology or prostate examination. It is a very effective test in detecting lung cancer in its initial stages when patients are still susceptible to curative treatment. This is why it is very important to be aware of the importance of pulmonary checks

HISTORY

A slave dessert The origin of this tradition would seem to coincide with the celebration of the Saturnalia festivals in ancient Rome. These celebrations took place in the period equivalent to our month of January, when round cakes were made with figs, dates and honey and were distributed to both commoners and slaves. Since the 3rd century, one bean was included in the cake and whoever found it was named "king of kings" while the festivities lasted.

The current recipe The chronicles speak of of different types of sweets in Navarra and Andalusia, probably inherited from the Romans, but the current recipe is due to the chef of Slavic origin from the court of the French King Louis XV. During the Epiphany feast, the chef wanted to treat the sovereign with a dry sweet in the shape of a crown, inside which he hid a diamond necklace. The Spanish King Felipe V, a relative of the French sovereign, who was present on that occasion, was so delighted with the dessert that he asked for the recipe and brought it to Spain.

With cream and fruits? The original recipe that Felipe V liked so much did not contain cream or any other addition. It was a dry bun sprinkled with some sugar. Candied fruits began to be added in the late 19th century, and the use of cream did not become widespread until the 1960s.

In what other countries do you eat Roscón de Reyes? The Spanish have exported the roscón to the countries of Latin America, and it has become especially popular in Mexico and Colombia. All the same, in some European countries there are other vaguely similar desserts that are also eaten on these dates. In France there is the Galette de Rois, which is a puff pastry filled with almond cream. And in Italy they eat the Fugassa de la Befana which, unlike the roscón, has no hole in the centre and is filled with “panna” instead of cream.

HISTORY

The Christmas Tree origin In the 8th century Saint Boniface was preaching amongst the Germanic peoples. In the midst of the rhetoric, it is still not clear why, the saint cut down a huge tree which fell and knocked down several others. Somehow, a small fir tree was saved from the tragedy and Saint Boniface took advantage of this to say: “Here is the tree of the Lord. Call it from now on the Tree of the Child Jesus” (Ecce arbor Domini; vocate illum abies Iesu). From that moment, with the arrival of Christmas, first the Germans and then other European peoples adorned a fir tree with paper flowers, apples, gold leaf and candies to celebrate the birth of Jesus. This tradition became so popular that in the year 1560, an Alsace edict prohibited the settlers from having more than one tree in their houses and not exceeding 2.50 meters in height (about 8 feet). The candles (the current lights) were added later to reflect the souls of the dead relatives. Apparently, the promoter of the Protestant Reformation 40

www.webexpressguide.com

In Germany, Martin Luther, was the one who decided to add the candles to enlighten him. It is believed that this way it attracted more attention from young children when approaching the "Tree of Jesus." From then on, the practice became common and spread throughout the rest of Europe. The first Christmas tree in Spain was erected in 1870 in Madrid, in the Alcañices Palace, located in the current building of the Bank of Spain. The custom of decorating trees in Spanish homes was brought by a princess of Russian origin named Sofia Troubetzkoy, who contracted a second marriage with a Spanish aristocrat, José Osorio y Silva, Marquis of Alcañices (therefore, owner of the palace). When the Christmas holidays arrived, she decided to decorate her home in the purest European style and, for this she decided to use a huge illuminated fir tree as the centre of her decoration. This is how this was the first of many that began to be used from that moment in the city and in the rest of Spain.

Pedir ayuda a otra persona sigue siendo ayudar.”

WHICH IS MORE IMPORTANT?

When single people have strong friendships, they don't give as much importance to finding a partner, according to a recent study

According to a new study published in the “Journal of Social and Personal Relationships”, single people who are more satisfied with their core of friends have less interest in finding a romantic partner, and they value friendships more than romantic ones. In Spain the number of singles increases every year. In 2005 they represented 32% of the population and in 2019 they were already 36%, a total of 14.4 million people.

Elyakim Kislev, a researcher at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and author of the study, estimates that, of the total number of singles in the world, around 20% are not interested in finding a partner. "I think it is important to study what their lives are like as there are new communities of singles, new ways of life and new patterns of behavior," says Kislev.

THAT’S LIFE

"People who have been single for a long time have larger social networks, which helps them reduce their feeling of loneliness" The study consisted of analysing the data from the Pairfam (German Analysis Panel on Intimate Relationships and Family Dynamics). This study is carried out by different German universities with the aim of analysing the lifestyles of families in the country. To collect the data, more than 12,000 people are surveyed and asked about how much they would like to have a partner, how much social life they have, or the level of importance they give to friendship.

THE PAIRFAM STUDY Analysing the Pairfam data, Kislev found that of all the singles, those who were not interested in dating were the ones who gave the most importance to friendship and those who had the highest level of satisfaction with their friendships.

"Wanting to have a partner is fine as long as it is in line with our goals and not with those of our family or the society that surrounds us" The opposite happened with single people who did want to have a romantic relationship: they were less satisfied with their social life and they gave less importance to friendship. According to Kislev, these results challenge the misconception that single people do not want a partner because they have trouble relating socially. Kislev says that singles with little desire for romantic relationships may also transfer the responsibilities that the nuclear family assumes to their networks of friends. Elyakim Kislev

HISTORY

How much will spend to celebrate chritsmas? What have been the most expensive Christmases in history?

It is difficult to know, but surely Henry VIII would be a good candidate to win that title. As revealed by the documents preserved in the National Archives, the sovereign spent all the annual taxes in celebrating 1509, his first year of reign.

64

Marinated wild boar and roasted swan were served at the Christmas banquet. The luncheon culminated in a choir performance, to which Henry presented the equivalent of two hundred pounds. But, in addition, he added expenses such as the 41,000 pounds that he paid to a goldsmith for various jewels, or the two thousand pounds that he gave to the blind court poet Bernard André.

It is estimated that the monarch spent the equivalent of sixteen million pounds of tax payers’ money in today’s value.

The king, for his part, also received gifts. Cardinal Wolsey, for example, presented him with a gold cup worth the equivalent of 30,000 pounds today.

But in what? The first in sumptuous banquets. The celebrations lasted twelve days, reaching the climax on Three Kings Day.

In later years, it was Henry VIII who would also establish the custom that the turkey was to be on the menu at the Christmas meal.
