LOS MEJORES DIBUJANTES DE CÓMIC SON CAMPOGIBRALTAREÑOS Si nos adentramos en el minoritario y a veces demonizado mundo del cómic observamos estupefactos que bajo la punta del iceberg que estaría representada por el dibujante sanroqueño Carlos Pacheco que goza de merecido reconocimiento mundial y que ha sido elegido en los últimos años, por la prestigiosa revista Wizard, mejor dibujante de cómics del mundo, hay toda una pléyade de nombres y hombres nacidos o residentes en nuestra comarca que sitúan a nuestro estrecho territorio en una auténtica potencia mundial en el ámbito del cómic atesorando una calidad y una cantidad que asombra a propios y extraños.
Ismael Pinteño es más pintor que dibujante, pero se adentra con éxito en el mundo del cómic y de la ilustración de libros. Ganador de premios internacionales es, sin duda, el mejor recreador del mundo de Tolkien en nuestro país y acarició el Goya en el documental 30 años de oscuridad. Ahora trabaja para grandes empresas de cine americano y famosos museos de todo el mundo y es el autor de portadas de libros o de los carteles de Algeciras Fantástika.
El granadino residente en Algeciras Jesús Merino fue el entintador de Pacheco en innumerables trabajos, desde su periplo en la Marvel a su posterior labor en la DC. Superman fue uno de sus grandes trabajos, un Superman lleno de matices nuevos y de aristas que conformaron un personaje renovado, reciclado en sus planteamientos y mucho más profundo en su psique. Tras aquella etapa, se ha convertido en un grandísimo dibujante que ha trabajado en las más grandes multinacionales del mundo, dándole su impronta personal a muchos personajes que acarreaban ya en sus espaldas el cansancio de su larga vida.
Su Conan por ejemplo es apoteósico, así como personajes como “Lobezno” o “Spiderman”. A Antonio aún le falta un descubridor que lo lance al estrellato que sin duda merece. Ahora ya está más cerca del éxito mayoritario con su particularísima fusión que ha hecho de Gandhi y Hulk.
El algecireño Jesús Barony ha trabajado más para empresas francesas o americanas que para editoriales españolas y sin exagerar es más conocido y respetado en París o en Nueva York que en Algeciras. Juanjo Ryp, también algecireño, triunfa en grandes publicaciones de tirada mundial, ilustró webs de grandes estrellas del cine y trabaja sin descanso para medio mundo sin que se enteren en la casa de enfrente de su residencia algecireña. Fue entre otros grandes logros el dibujante para todo el mundo de Robocop.

So what’s the big deal
with fishing? According ton the Cabinet Office minister, Michael Gove, the agreement the UK has struck with the EU was the “best possible deal” for the fishing industry as a whole. Well it’s just as well that his living does not depend on his daily catch. Here is the deal as agreed in 1200 pages: · EU boats will continue to fish in UK waters for some years to come · But UK fishing boats will get a greater share of the fish from UK waters. · That shift in the share will be phased in between 2021 and 2026, with most of the quota transferred in 2021. This is known as the “adjustment period”, giving EU fleets time to get used to the new arrangements.
· The EU wanted it to be longer, the UK wanted it to be shorter - it looks like they’ve met somewhere in the middle, with an end date of 30 June 2026. · After that, there’ll be annual negotiations to decide how the catch is shared out between the UK and EU. · The UK would have the right to completely exclude EU boats after 2026 · But the EU could respond with taxes on exports of British fish to the EU or by denying UK boats access to EU waters.

SO WHAT’S GONE WRONG? Previously, the UK fishermen had access to the EMF, which is the EU fund according to their maritime and fisheries policies, this ended in 2020. The new long term EU budget now runs from 2021 to 2027, it has been proposed at 6.14 billion Euros under a simpler and more flexible fund. with a particular focus on supporting small-scale fishermen. This means the the UK fishing industry lost out twice, the first time because they did not make use of the funds to modernise their boats in order to compete with the EU fishermen. The second time because the UK is out of the EU and now the fishing industry is begging the UK government for help. The additional problems that have surged recently are due to the fact that fish has to be delivered fresh. Considering that at least 50% of the UK catch is sold and exported to Europe, the new custom arrangements have been causing such large delay that the fish actually is rotting in transit.
To make things worse, the EU requirements for live animal imports, makes it impossible for the UK to export shellfish like oysters, clams and similar as well as crustaceans such as lobsters, crabs without the due certificates required by the EU, which the UK is not geared to produce. This was a protection for the UK when part of the EU and was not required when exporting to Europe, but now required as EU imports from outside the territory. In 2019, the total fishing contribution to the UK GDP was £437m of which more than 333,000 tonnes of fish were exported to the EU. That accounted for nearly half of the total catch of the UK fishing fleet and roughly three quarters of total fish exports from the UK. Some parts of the industry, such as shellfish, are totally dependent on such exports. It is not difficult even to just imagine the disaster that Brexit has caused to the fishing industry The fishing agreement was one, if not the major, sticky point required by the UK to reach an agreement, wasting 4½ years of every body’s precious time and money in futile negotiations.
HOW DID THE OLD FISHING SYSTEM WORK? As part of its membership of the EU, the UK was subject to the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP). Many of the rules of the CFP were first established in the 1970s when every fishing fleet from EU member states had equal access to European waters.
Ordinarily, each country would control access to their Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), which stretches up to 200 nautical miles from the coast, or to a maritime halfway point between neighbouring countries. In the EU, fishing rights are negotiated annually
by ministers from each member state, who gather for marathon talks every December to haggle over the volume of fish that can be caught from each species. National quotas are then divided up using historical data going back to the 1970s, when the UK fishing industry says it got a bad deal.

After fish exporters held demonstrations outside government departments in central London, warning their livelihoods were under threat, the British government announced, on 19 January, a £23m compensation scheme to support fishing firms. One trade group commented that the fund was “welcome” but no more than a “sticking plaster”. A further investment of £100m was promised by the government to modernise the fishing industry and will be consulting on how the money is to be spent. Another promise that may or not be kept?

Businesses are being advised by “the British Government” to open branches and warehouses in the EU to counteract the new restrictions and regulations. They really are taking the “micky”! Apart from increasing the costs, whatever they do, goods have to go through the importation process. If they are exported from the UK to importers, consumers or their own premises in the EU, they still have to go through the EU importation procedures and requirements. And that is just one problem, now imagine and multiply by all the other problems relating to all other types of finance, commerce, and industry, in order to come to the “common sense” conclusion that the whole thing has been staged for the benefit of a few but to be paid for by the loss and suffering of everyone else.

The planet is warming and we have already exceeded the historical average prior to the industrial revolution by one degree. However, this increase in temperatures makes extreme weather events more frequent and violent.
69% of extreme weather events are caused by climate change Heat fires in Alaska and Australia, increasingly frequent and devastating hurricanes in the Caribbean, floods in France or heat waves in China - these are all extreme events. In a Carbon Brief report that gathers data from 300 attribution studies, it was found that 69% of extreme weather events have humaninduced global warming as a common cause. It is true that the most common extreme events caused by climate change are droughts and heat events, which account for half of the cases. However, extreme cold and snowfall, although less frequent, can also be produced with greater virulence due to climate change.
The first mechanism by which climate change could have affected the storm is quite basic: warming temperatures leads to evaporation of water, leading to a more humid atmosphere, leading to more precipitation. More rainfall means greater chances of flooding, but also of snowfall, when temperatures are low enough and humid air collides with a cold air mass. This is precisely what has happened with the storm Filomena that swept Spain in January. A water-laden Atlantic storm has encountered a stream of cold air from the North Pole, leaving snowfalls and low temperatures that had not been recorded for half a century. It is still not known with total certainty to what extent global warming has determined this specific storm, for this an attribution study is necessary once it has passed. Scientists have long warned that climate change will bring more frequent, wetter, and slower-moving storms. If the next storm shows us anything, it’s that climate change doesn’t just mean more drought and more hurricanes.

In a large bowl, mix together oil, vinegar, prunes, olives, capers, bay leaves, garlic, oregano, 2 tablespoons salt, and 2 teaspoons pepper. Add chicken to marinade and cover tightly with plastic wrap. Marinate for 2 to 6 hours, tossing mixture every few hours to ensure even marination.

Preheat oven to 350°. Transfer chicken and marinade to a large roasting pan. Pour wine all over and sprinkle brown sugar over chicken.

Bake chicken, basting every 20 minutes with pan juices for 50/60 minutes.

Increase oven to 500° and roast until chicken skin is deeply golden.

Remove chicken, olives, and prunes onto a platter and cover loosely with foil. Bring the juices to a simmer in a pan over medium heat and let reduce by half. Season to taste with salt and pepper and whisk in cold butter and parsley.

Serve chicken with a drizzle of pan juice reduction.

Plitidepsin An antiviral produced by Pharmamar in Spain, is up to 27.5 times more potent against the coronavirus than remdesivir A study carried out by the University of California together with the Pasteur Institute in Paris has verified the efficacy of plitidepsin, an antiviral treatment produced by the pharmaceutical company Pharmamar. This antiviral treatment is extracted from Aplidium albicans , a siphonshaped marine filter animal. Plitidepsin can reduce the viral load in the lungs by 100 times, and is 27.5 times more effective than remdesivir, the most widely used treatment so far. Efforts to achieve an effective vaccine against the coronavirus have already paid off and the population has begun to be vaccinated around the world. However, people who are already sick with COVID-19 need treatments that combat the symptoms and damage caused by the infection. However, current treatments are not as effective as would be desirable . So far the European Medicines Agency has approved several drugs for the treatment of COVID-19. Among them dexamethaxone and remdesivir. Dexamethaxone is a corticosteroid that prevents excessive inflammation, which reduces lung damage caused by overloading the immune system. On the other hand, remdesivir is an antiviral, developed to treat Ebola, which has shown its effectiveness in reducing the multiplication of the new SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. seriously ill patients in recent months in hospitals around the world. Plitidepsin is not a drug that "attacks" the virus, but a therapy aimed at protecting the host. Viruses need the machinery of human cells to multiply. Plitidepsin blocks the human eEF1A protein and thus prevents the virus from using our cells to make copies of itself. Plitidepsin had been listed since 2003 as an orphan drug for the treatment of multiple myeloma, a type of cancer and a rare disease. The name orphan is used when medicines are not profitable for pharmaceutical companies to manufacture. In May 2020 PharmaMar began clinical trials for its use as an antiviral against COVID-19, and is currently in phase II and III of clinical trials for this purpose. Research at the University of California focused on the new British variant of the coronavirus, the most contagious, and showed that plitidepsin was also effective against this mutation. It was found that this drug is able to reduce lung inflammation, which is one of the most serious side effects of COVID-19. Also Plitidepsin has an advantage over those that directly affect the virus: viruses are less likely to develop resistance to this type of antiviral. This is why it continues to be effective even against new coronavirus variants.

PLAYING THE VICTIM AND THE OFFENDED IS ASSOCIATED WITH MORE INSECURITY AND LESS EMPATHY A recent study indicates that people who play the victims have negative personality traits: they believe they are morally superior, they have a lack of empathy, a greater need for recognition and more repetitive thoughts. Surely you know someone who, in the face of any conflict, uncomfortable circumstance or discussion, believes that everyone is against him and thinks that he is always the injured, offended or insulted party. Research from Tel Aviv University published in the journal “Personality and Individual Differences” has identified a new type of personality that has been called the Tendency to Interpersonal Victimization (TVI). A person who fits into this classification is characterized by assuming the role of victim in most of their interpersonal relationships. An example of these interactions would be someone interrupting us as we speak. There are people who, although it bothers them, quickly forget it and continue the conversation. However, others feel offended and it affects them deeply, because they see it as an extremely serious personal attack.
The first three studies showed that having a personality with TVI is characteristic of people with moral elitism (they believe themselves morally superior), lack of empathy, need for recognition and repetitive thinking. The authors indicate that this type of personality could have its origin in the parenting ways. In two other studies, participants were asked to imagine different scenes in which they felt uncomfortable or upset about someone’s behaviour. Some of those scenes were, for example, receiving a negative review from a teammate or losing in a game. People who scored higher on TVI were more likely to want revenge on the other person. The authors hope that this new study will help psychologists and psychiatrists treat people with this personality type. They also warn that it would be interesting to investigate what happens when people with high TVI reach positions of power.

A published study reveals that the very thin female body type prevalent in the media is less admired by men than women believe. Many women are dissatisfied with their bodies and research indicates that this is largely due to the unrealistic portrayal of female bodies in the media. The idealization of very slim female bodies creates an expectation in women that they have to achieve that body type in order to be seen as attractive by their romantic partners. However, many studies indicate that both men and women are much less demanding with the physique than it seems. Data indicates that women think that men prefer very slim female bodies, such as those of runway models. A new study published in the psychology journal “Sex Roles” has found that this is not necessarily the case. While much of the earlier research asked male participants to rate female bodies, the study by researchers Sarah N. Johnson and Renee Engeln is different. Instead, they asked volunteers to rate images of real women in the media. The study was conducted on a group of 548 students evenly divided by gender. The men were asked to rate thirteen images of female models, which had been chosen to be representative of the models’ body types that frequently appear in women’s magazines.
The participants rated the size of the models’ bodies on a scale from 1 “too thin” to 7 “too fat”, and the attractiveness of the bodies on a scale of 1 “extremely unattractive” to 7 “extremely attractive. The participants were then asked to fill in this score a second time, but indicating the points they believed would be awarded by people of the opposite sex. Although the scores were similar between men and women, when it came to assessing how the opposite sex would respond they did not give a single one. Women felt that men would not rate magazine models as too thin, and that they would also find them more attractive. Something similar happened with men. The researchers call this a “parallel misconception.” Johnson and Engeln then conducted a second study with a larger sample of 707 people but broadening the age range between 18 and 86 years. This time they were more likely to think the magazine models were “too skinny.” However, when it came to guessing how the other sex would respond, the same pattern appeared from the previous study. Both men and women thought that the other sex would rate the bodies of slim models as more attractive than they actually did. The authors believe these studies can help mitigate the negative impact of unattainable beauty standards in the media. Beyond telling women that these female bodies are not realistic, they believe that interventions should focus on making them see that they are overestimating the preferences of the opposite sex for such bodies.
