EDITOR PAGE While the pandemic is flaring to unmatched proportions in India, we seem to have got over the worst here in Europe mainly thanks to the lock downs and the restrictions of movement. As the vaccination program gains pace we are starting to see a gradual lifting of restrictions leading to the beginning of summer. The UK is suggesting to allow travel again from May 17th, Spain on the other hand will only allow British tourists from June, probably subject to certain conditions to ensure the virus is not imported again. Let’s prepare and look forward to some normality starting now.

The ozone layer means life on Earth, it protects life from the harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays, unfortunately it is not recovering at the expected rate and the now big hole is located above Antarctica.
Its relevance is being noted now with a renewed concern on account of the climate change that has become extensively obvious.
The damage to the ozone layer is due to the emission of syngas containing chlorine and bromine, such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). Scientists had calculated that, since these gases persist for 50 years in the atmosphere, their ban would reduce their concentration in the stratosphere by 2% per year, which would allow the ozone layer to reform. However, in 2018, American researchers calculated that since 2013, the atmospheric concentration of CFC-11, one of the incriminated gases, fell by only 0.4% per year, a sign that 13,000 tonnes were still emitted annually somewhere on Earth, and the major culprits were found to be 18 Chinese factories still producing CFC-11, mainly used to make insulating foam.

After intervention by the Chinese government, new studies showed that CFC11 emissions started to decline again by around 1% per year. Another analysis based on Japanese and South Korean sampling stations also confirms that a major source of CFC-11 in eastern China has dried up.

Regrettably though there are plenty of other illegal sources left. The atmospheric surveillance network is still deficient in several regions of the world, notably in India and Brazil, which are also suspected of harbouring fraudsters.
Stratospheric ozone plays a crucial role in protecting life on Earth, additionally the increase in UVB is responsible for causing more skin cancer in many animals, especially humans, disrupting plant growth and affecting phytoplankton in the oceans.
In the course of 2020, ozone holes of record size and duration appeared and then disappeared over the Arctic between January and April, then over the Antarctic between August and December, under the effect of powerful polar vortices. The World Meteorological Organization fears that the combination of these vortices, which are gaining strength with climate change, and illegal emissions will make it more likely that large holes will form in the next few years.
The level of greenhouse gas emissions at the present rate is at the root of the climate change and will have to be reduced much further in order to keep the temperature rise below 1.5 ° C, the target set by the Paris Agreement, a tall order.

There is also a further concept that aerosols may play a larger role than what is believed in the variations in Earth's temperature. These aerosols are made up of all kinds of solid or liquid microscopic particles that rise in the atmosphere. They are emitted either naturally or by human activities, as for example the ash released by an erupting volcano, the smoke of forest fires, the soot or sulfur dioxide produced by the combustion of coal or gasoline, particles of sand or of salt, to dust. As recently discovered the amount of plastic pollution which is destroying our oceans is also greatly responsible for repealing into the air as microscopic particles as they gradually decompose. Not only are we eating the microscopic plastic particles ingested by the fish we eat but we now also breathe them into our lungs. But that is another story also created by human ignorance, greed and complete disregard of the gifts of nature.

One in five self-employed workers anticipates switching to other forms of employment, in a sign that the pandemic is reversing the long-term trend of growth in numbers of people working for themselves. Celebremos el día de la Poesía No debemos olvidarlo, la poesía es un escondrijo no un chalet adosado y son pocos los que acuden a su llamada furtiva cada día. Es la poesía un arte difícil que requiere de un aprendizaje previo que te permita saborear sus mieles de forma plena y gozosa, pero la poesía es el reducto más íntimo de la belleza, el último unicornio y el mejor bálsamo posible para estos tiempos dominados por el estrés y la estridencia. Acudir a una cita con la poesía o con la literatura en general es tan saludable como salir a la sierra a respirar aire puro, tan ventajoso como apagar el televisor y abrir un libro o como pasar toda la noche soñando maravillas. La poesía no es una secta sino una reunión placentera al calor de unos versos y unas metáforas para enriquecer el espíritu y sanear la mente. La poesía no es un círculo cerrado, siempre tiene las puertas abiertas de par en par para aquellos que quieran cruzar su zaguán y acceder a su abrazo beatífico. No es la poesía una aburrida cantinela sino la expresión de los acontecimientos

que acaecen en nuestros nervios de la forma más profunda y original posible. No acorralemos a la poesía en una reserva para especies protegidas por peligro de extinción. El ser humano necesita a la poesía para sentirse vivo y despierto. Es la poesía sorpresa y conmoción que te agita las médulas extasiadas de tus entrañas y te hace reaccionar ante el incisivo estímulo. La poesía no debiera dejar indiferente a nadie. El que no reacciona es que tiene oxidado el corazón. Es la poesía una puerta a la ilusión y una ventana a un mundo menos prosaico, menos inhumano, más habitable. Es una senda a la belleza y como dice Ramón Trecet, hay que buscad la belleza porque es la única protesta que merece la pena en este asqueroso mundo. Por lo tanto, haz el amor y la poesía nunca la guerra o la entropía. Hagamos poemas de cada derrota, de cada rendición. Sólo así volveremos a levantar la cabeza y arrimar el hombro a la vida. Hagamos de cada día un nuevo poema lleno de ilusión y de renovadas esperanzas.

Preheat oven to 400°. Line a large rimmed baking sheet with foil and grease with cooking spray. Season salmon on both sides with salt and place in centre of prepared tray.

In a medium bowl, whisk to combine Sriracha, butter, honey, garlic, and ginger. Season with salt and brush all over salmon fillet.

Placed lime halves cut side down on baking sheet and bake until salmon is cooked through, about 15 to 18 minutes.

A reaction characterized by the formation of antibodies that activate platelets in the presence of heparin, a drug that is also found naturally in the blood and is an anticoagulant. This reaction has a high genetic component, and therefore people with a known tendency to thrombosis do not have to be at greater risk from the vaccine. In fact, thromboses have occurred less frequently among vaccinated people than among the general population.

In very rare cases, antibodies generated by the body in response to the vaccine may trigger the same symptoms as in HIT. However, it is not yet clear which antibodies are involved. Time goes by rather quick, it seems like yesterday that my wife and I decided to move to the Costa del Sol, this was mainly because in our mind we wanted to provide a better future for our 3 very young children and in a better climate.

Working has never frightened me or my wife and it was not long before we learned to communicate in Spanish and get busy earning our living and abiding by the rules of the land. Those many years ago, apart from the summer tourism, Spain was extremely popular with retired British residents who found the high value of the pound provided a much cheaper way of living in a more pleasant climate. Although the number of resident pensioners has greatly reduced in accordance to the lesser benefits provided by a lower value pound, the British residents still represent the largest number of foreign residents living in Spain… with a difference.

MY OPINION
With the growing number of immigrants into the UK, creating a larger number of unemployment and less opportunities, many younger people, couples, even families have been attracted by the idea of moving their roots to Spain, which was especially favourable when the UK was part of the EU. Little realisation was made of the fact that Spain is in fact a different country with a different language and different customs. Therefore for many it became difficult to earn a living unless they could work “under the radar” to avoid the high costs of Social Security, IVA and other taxes and even regulations. Naturally this was disliked by the authorities as much as it was disliked by other businesses who have to pay for the privilege of working while competing with unauthorised businesses.
Brexit has therefore provided Spain with an opportunity to reduce, if not eliminate this kind of nuisance problem. The UK is no longer part of the European Union, it is now a third country, therefore any “foreign” non EU person must abide by the legal requirements that Spain demands to allow that person to live permanently in Spain. As one of the main Spanish papers put it, “the British press have got it all wrong, and are presenting the wrong picture to the British public”.
In conclusion there is no doubt whatsoever that UK’s visitors are and always will be welcome to Spain, despite what some British papers may insinuate when referring to the refusal of entry for non-compliance with Covid-19 restrictions.
Just to give an example, using the social pages online, one of the most common services was to provide a taxi service at much cheaper rates, even when using a UK registered vehicle. Apart from the fact that by law a special insurance is required to carry passengers, one has to have a local council’s license to do so, which is very expensive. You can imagine how official taxi owners felt about this after having to pay all the basic costs to register the business as well as the costs of running a licenced vehicle.
The other disliked activity was that of supplying food (takeaways) prepared at home, in the kitchen. Again this was objected to by bars and restaurants who have to pay for their premises, the insurance, running costs and staff as well as the social security for everyone. That is without mentioning the strict health inspections they have to comply with to keep the licence.
The British people are and will always be welcome in Spain with open arms but they must realise that they must follow the rules, it is the “under the radar” pirates that are not welcome.
All British residents already resident or who have registered for NIE prior to 1st January 2021 are safe otherwise their stay in Spain is limited to a maximum of 90 days in a period of 180 days. Exceeding this period in Spain or any EU country may trigger an immediate deportation or a fine unless a visa is applied for. To make it more difficult to work “under the radar” drivers may not use a foreign drivers’ licence for more than 6 months just as foreign registered cars may not be driven in Spain for more than 6 months. A longer term visa can be granted for different purposes such as employment, students or other as long as the application is made in Britain and among other items one must show an income or means of self-sufficiency while staying in Spain.

The popularity of owning a 2nd home in Spain has not faded in the slightest. Home owners retain the nights to own properties in Spain but it does not affect the terms of stay which is limited to the 90 days every 180.

Rotary clubs keep moving on despite the pandemic In the course of this last month there has been a number of new developments starting with the visit of a speaker guest, Willlem Falter from the RC Guadalmina, who illustrated the enormity of the problem caused by pollution, followed by his invitation to join the “Plastic Soup” project with over 1000 other clubs all over the world with the object of cleaning up our environment.
Following our previous request for help, the RC Marbella East are still providing food to the Estepona comedor and we are very grateful for the help.
The other good news is that we deposited some 250 books at the Ateneo de Manilva, books that are to be donated to the international library of Algeciras.

Gibraltar the end of a tax heaven New Gibraltar Treaty On the 4th March 2019 there was an agreement signed by Spain and the United Kingdom on Gibraltar, it’s the first international treaty signed since the Utrecht Treaty of 1715, when Gibraltar was ceded to the UK. The agreement struck between Spain and the United Kingdom came into force on the 13th March this year, which means that Gibraltar is no longer a tax haven. The idea of the treaty is to eliminate tax fraud and the detrimental effects of a tax system that allowed people to pay corporate tax only on the profits they made in Gibraltar. “The agreement resolves the fiscal sovereignty of the area and ends an anachronistic and tremendously damaging situation for Spain without weakening its position on the sovereignty of the Rock,” said the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Arancha González Laya, in Congress.
The new treaty establishes clear rules on tax and residence and prevents people who are resident in Spain from taking advantage of Gibraltar’s tax system. Legal tax residence will be determined by several factors: the location of the majority of a person’s assets, where most of their income is generated and whether the majority of owners or managers are tax residents in Spain, making it an effective tool in the fight against tax evasion. The new treaty also establishes an increase in Administrative cooperation and reinforces cooperation through a liaison body and a joint coordination committee. Foreign sources have assured that the Agreement does not imply any change with respect to the Spanish or British position regarding sovereignty and jurisdiction in relation to Gibraltar.

The questionnaire was developed from a study published in Aging that used AI in an attempt to identify the key characteristics of psychological aging and the main risk factors that affect mortality. The most interesting thing is that they have linked psychological attitudes with feeling more or less young, and have linked it to biological health. That is, with certain vital attitudes, you feel younger than you are, and that makes you live longer and have better health. when you are collecting retirement. But it goes beyond this. It is developed with an important scientific basis, an AI that predicts age. It is the first AI designed solely to analyse psychological aspects to predict age. The researchers hope that it can help to understand the role that psychological clocks play in general aging, as well as improve mental health and the feeling of youth. The program is based on two predictive technologies: PsychoAge, which predicts chronological age, and SubjAge, which predicts how old you perceive yourself. For SubjAge, the goal is to identify which personality traits help to "feel younger" and whether this can affect mortality. There are previous studies that relate the perception of age with health factors. That is, people who feel older than their biological age tend to have more health problems.
