editor We know that the Costa del Sol is a summer holiday location and we know how busy it can get then but I fail to understand why all the residents , foreign as well as Spanish, hide under the veil of winter. February is the shortest month of the year yet it is packed with events that should bring everyone out to celebrate and enjoy life. To mention the most important ones it is time to celebrate St. Valentine’s Day, it also marks the start of the Chinese New Year and then there is Carnival. All are joyful events that precede the start of spring and Easter. I hope that this small message will help to wake the sense of reality and forget the doom and gloom that some people and even governments like to spread. Ya sabemos que la Costa del Sol es un lugar de vacaciones de verano y sabemos cuanta gente hay por las calles en esta época, pero no entiendo por qué todos los residentes extranjeros, así como los españoles se ocultan bajo el bajo el velo de invierno. Febrero es el mes más corto del año, sin embargo, está lleno de eventos que deberían traer a todo el mundo para celebrar y disfrutar de la vida. Por citar los más importantes es el momento de celebrar el Día de San Valentín, también el inicio del Año Nuevo chino y luego el Carnaval. Todos son acontecimientos alegres que preceden al inicio de la primavera y la Pascua. Espero que este pequeño mensaje le ayudará a despertar el sentido de la realidad y olvidar el pesimismo que algunas personas e incluso los gobiernos le gusta difundir. Но я никак не могу понять, почему местные жители, как иностранцы, так и испанцы, прячутся под покровом зимы? What has love got to do with it? February 14th is when lovers exchange gifts in the name of St. Valentine, but what has a saint got to do with a pagan celebration? Al Capone chose the 14th of February 1929 to carry out the famous execution of his competing gang members. It was certainly not a favourable expression of love or romancing and the day has been known since as “The Saint Valentine’s Day Massacre”. The history of St Valentines Day and its patron saint is shrouded in mystery, but we do know that February has long been a month of romance. St Valentine’s day as we know it, still contains vestiges of both Christian and roman traditions. For eight hundred years prior to the establishment of St Valentine’s Day, the Romans had celebrated a pagan festival in mid February commemorating a young man’s rite of passage to the god Lupercus. The celebration featured a Lottery in which young men would draw the names of teenage girls from a box. The girl assigned 12

to each young man in that manner, would become his sexual companion for that year. In an effort to turn people away from the old pagan rites Pope Gelasius ordered a change in the rules of the “Lottery” and instead of the names of maidens being drawn from the box the names of saints were substituted, women were allowed to enter the draw as well as men and the object was to emulate the ways of the selected saint throughout the year. Instead of the pagan god Lupercus, the church looked for a suitable patron saint of love to take his place. They found
an appropriate choice in Valentine, who in AD 270 had been beheaded by Emperor Claudius II. So who was St Valentine and how did he become associated with this ancient rite? Today the Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred. One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. Emperor at that time, Claudius II decreed that single men made better warriors and with this thinking, outlawed marriage for young men. The injustice of this ruling forced Valentine to go against his emperor and perform marriages in secret for young soldiers and their sweethearts. The inevitable outcome was discovery and sentence to death. Other legends suggest that Valentine was a champion of Christian prisoners suffering
at the hands of harsh roman jailers, who would often torture or even beat inmates to death. According to one legend St Valentine sent the first “Valentine Card” himself, the story goes, that whilst in prison Valentine fell in love with a young girl, thought to be the jailer’s daughter and sent her a letter signed “Your Valentine” the traditional greeting still used to this day. The truth or otherwise of the many legends surrounding this enigmatic Saint have faded into insignificance when compared to the need for a recognized symbol of love and a yearly excuse for lovers to express their feelings for each other. There are varying ideas of what actually became of Valentine, some say he was beheaded whilst

others contend that he became ill and died in prison. In 1835 the remains, or what are believed to be the remains of St Valentine were given to an Irish priest named father John Spratt by Pope Gregory XVI, after Spratt impressed the pope with his passionate preaching during a visit to Rome. The gift, in a black and gold casket, can still be viewed every St Valentines Day, at the Whitefriars church in Dublin. The first true valentine card was sent by Charles Duke of Orleans to his wife in 1514, whilst he was imprisoned in the Tower of London. In England Valentines Day didn’t become popular until around the seventeenth century, although by the middle of the eighteenth century it had become common for people of all social classes to send some small token of affection to a loved one. These gifts would usually take the form of a hand written note, in which the recipient would be assured of the sincerest intentions of the sender. By the end of the century printed cards began to appear, due to the enormous advances in printing at that time. Ready made cards were an easy way for people to express their emotions at a time when strict moral standards made any form of affection difficult. Today, somewhere in the region of 4 billion Dollars is spent on Valentine cards and associated gifts every year, proving that romance is still very much alive. So I leave you with the words of Shakespeare; who, after all puts it better then anyone. 14

Biological CHAOS
The increase in world travel is causing biological clashes that tend to destroy or mutate the traditional fauna and flora of places. Most of these incidents are man-made others are caused through migration mainly via the same vehicles used for travel.
A famous example is the regrettable introduction of the African honey bee to South America; the European snails that escaped from a gourmet’s escargot farm and are now devouring the state of California; or the starling, 100 of which were released in New York’s Central Park in 1890 by a club of Shakespeare fans as part of a hare-brained scheme to introduce all the birds mentioned by the Bard. The traffic has worked both ways. The blight which cause
the Irish potato famine in the mid-19th century may have come from America. Another devastating example of an imported menace is the vine root louse, Phylloxera, which arrived in France with some vine cuttings from America and began to attack the local vines which, unlike the American stock, had no built-in resistance to the pest. First detected around 1868 in Bordeaux, within 25 years it had all but wiped out most of the vineyards in France, Spain, Portugal, Germany and Italy.
Gardeners in Spain are all too familiar with some of the other stowaways which have arrived in more recent times, in particular the citrus leaf miner and the South African geranium moth. The citrus leaf miner, which first made its appearance in Malaga in the early nineties, probably arrived here from Asia. Phyllocnistis citrella quickly spread, posing a threat to Spain’s citrus industry. 16

The geranium moth, Cacyreus marshalli, is a native of South Africa, as are pelargoniums, or geraniums. It thrives in Spain because here, unlike in its homeland, it has no natural predators. It is believed to have arrived in Mallorca with a shipment of plants around 1987. Soon afterwards local gardeners started detecting unexplained damage to their geraniums, and it wasn’t until 1989 that a German entomologist correctly identified the culprit. By 1992 it had reached mainland Spain, spreading to gardens on the Costa Blanca and Costa del Sol Other threats have reached Spain under their own steam, including one recent arrival, the Ruddy Duck which is originally American but flew here from England, of all places. Now it poses a threat to the rare local White-headed Duck. The Whiteheaded Duck was on the verge of extinction two decades ago, and only the constant vigilance of environmentalists helped bring the population back to a meager 400 or so breeding pairs which survive in the wetlands of Andalusia, representing some 20 per cent of the world population. But its cocky American cousin could reverse its timid come-back. These American ducks are all the descended from three pairs which escaped from a British bird-fancier’s menagerie in 1948. They became naturalized in the UK, where there are now several thousand, and many of them started heading south in search of fresh territory. They were first spotted in Spain in 1983, and ornithologists later were alarmed to discover that they were inter-breeding with the native species. Competition from their hybrid descendants may be too much for the White-headed Duck to cope with. MONSTER CATFISH More often than not, damaging species are
introduced purposely, either for commercial reasons or for sport. Fast breeding common partridges were introduced in central Spain by hunters, where they proceeded to interbreed with the native Red-legged Partridge. Non-indigenous deer and chamois have caused havoc to the ecosystems of Spanish nature parks. Spanish rivers have not been free from the meddling of over-enthusiastic sportsmen or even agricultural authorities. The native brown trout, for example, is being crowded out of its territory by the aggressive rainbow trout used to stock many rivers and streams. But perhaps the most spectacular example of an introduced fish species is the Siluro, the monster catfish which now lurk in the dams of the Ebro river. A native of central Europe, the Siluro, or Wels, will gobble up just about anything as it hunts along the muddy bottoms of slowmoving rivers and lakes. It feeds on fish, frogs, water birds, and even small mammals which have the misfortune to fall into the water. It is Europe’s largest freshwater fish, reaching a weight of more than 600 pounds and measuring up to 16 feet. www.webexpressguide.com

This voracious fish from hell appeared in the Mequinenza dam in Aragon, northern Spain, not long after it was built 25 years ago. Apparently, siluro fry were smuggled into Spain by a group of German anglers who were tired of fishing in the rain and fancied the idea of hooking their favorite catch in the Spanish sun. The small catfish proceeded to eat everything the dam’s water could offer, and every year they increase in size, some recent specimens reaching more than 300 pounds. Spanish waterways are also threatened by invading Louisiana crayfish, which are a menace in two of Spain’s most valuable wildlife areas, the Doñana park and the Ebro delta, and a threat to Spanish rice farmers. Unlike the increasingly rare native crayfish, which only lives in the pristine, fastrunning cold waters of mountain streams, these American cousins will live just about anywhere. Furthermore, the females can lay up to 500 eggs at one go. This reproductive energy of the Procamabrus clarkii was precisely why they were introduced to southern Spanish fish-farms in 1974,

as a cash crop. It was not a very successful experiment - Spaniards much prefer the local seafood - and they soon outgrew the bounds of the farms and became naturalized as an extremely damaging pest: they feed off the local animal species, they devour the young shoots in rice fields, they undermine river embankments with their tunnels. But there was no stopping their spread, and within five years they had appeared in northern Spain. One more monument to the god of Really Bad Ideas. Alien Attack: The Killer Seaweed
Only those who meet the required standards are admitted as Interflora florists. I have often used the Interflora service to deliver flowers but only recently I have become aware that florists have to meet some stringent criteria before they are admitted into the largest flowers distribution network in the world. Even after admission, inspectors will visit these retailers anonymously to make sure they are maintaining the desired standards. It is all done to protect the brand. To start with would be members must operate from recognizable retail premises in acceptable condition and be able to supply quality fresh flowers and accessories at a level acceptable to Interflora. They must also be able to demonstrate an acceptable standard of floristry with all the facilities necessary for the reception, transmission and delivery of orders. After an examination by an Interflora Approved Examiner, evaluating the ability to service up to required standards as well as
the rest, a report is then sent to the Membership Committee for consideration. A minimum of 12 months experience prior trading is required before consideration. Not only must the required standards be met at the time of application, they must also be maintained. There is a range of considerations open in determining whether the required standards can be maintained on an ongoing basis. In addition to an application fee, a substantial Fidelity Bond must be deposited for the duration of the membership. Before you instruct the sending of flowers abroad or round the corner, the florist is a member of Interflora. Members are required to display the Interflora logo on all their literature and adverts.

280g good-quality dark chocola te, 70% cocoa solids • 284ml pot double cream • 50g unsalted butter
1. Chop the chocolate and tip into a large bowl. Put the crea m and butter into a saucepan and heat gently until the butter melts and the crea m reaches simmering point. Remove from heat, then pour over the chocolate. Stir the chocolate and cream together until you have a smooth mixture. Add any flavourings to the truffle mix at this stage (divide the mixture between bowls and mix in liqueurs or other flavourings, a tsp at a time, to taste. Try bourbon, Grand Marnier, coconut rum or the zest and juice of an orange), or leave plai n. Cool and chill for at least 4 hrs. 2. To shape the truffles, dip a melon baller in hot water and scoop up balls of the mixture, then drop the truffle s onto greaseproof paper. Or ligh tly coat your hands in flavourless oil (such as sunflower) and roll the truffle s between your palms. You could also use a pipi ng bag to pipe rounds onto grea seproof paper. 3. Coat your truffles immedia tely after shaping. Tip topping s into a bowl and gently roll the truffles until eve nly coated, then chill on greasep roof paper. Try: crushed, shelled pistachio nuts; truffle flavoured with orange zest lightly toasted desiccated coconut; or roll a and juice in cocoa powder. To coat in chocolate, line a baking tray with grea seproof paper. Melt 100g milk , dark or white chocolate for 10 truffles. Allow chocolate to cool slightly. With a fork, pick up one truffle at a time and hold over the bowl of melted chocola te. Spoon the chocolate over the truffle unt il well-coated. Place on the bak ing tray, then chill. 4. Store in the fridge in an airt ight container for 3 days, or free ze for up to a month. Defrost in the fridge ove rnight. To give as presents, plac e 8-10 truffles in individual foil or paper cases inside small, lined boxes tied wit h ribbon. Keep in the fridge until you’re ready to give them.

Chirimoyas or Custard Apples in English Although this tropical fruit has its origins in India and South America, it is very popular in Spain, where its trees are grown in the southern province of Granada, near the Costa Tropical. Chirimoyas are available from October throughout the winter in Spain and you must make sure to have a taste of these luscious, tasty tropical treats, before the season is over Served raw, they are great for breakfast, just cut them in half and scoop out the white, juicy flesh, picking out the seeds. You can also peel and seed them and make a fruit smoothie, or put them in a salad. Not only are they delicious but they are said to control blood pressure. Chirimoyas contain Vitamin A to keep skin and hair healthy and they are also known to cure indigestion problems. The copper content helps to cure constipation and to treat diarrhoea and dysentery. The small drawback is that they are high in calories. Cherimoyas are like avocados; they will ripen at room temperature right on your kitchen counter. If ripe, they will give to slight pressure. If you purchase a ripe fruit keep it in the fridge.

Manolo DĂaz Continuing on a similar theme, this month we introduce Manolo Diaz who also paints portraits but is more dedicated to hyperrealism, surrealism and particularly fantasy paintings. Manolo, 48, was born in Madrid and started his painting career when he was 13 and took part in numerous art exhibitions from his 15th birthday. To earn a living, he worked as a free lance photographer for various agencies and his interests started to develop into digital imagery and drawings, being one of the first artists to use touch up programs and image composing programs in the late 80’s. He evetntually fell in love with Photoshop.

BECAUSE NO ONE SHOULD FACE CANCER ALONE STM NUMMOS LIFE WILL BE HOSTING A MACMILLAN BIGGEST COFFEE MORNING IN SEPTEMBER FOR THE 3RD YEAR RUNNING, HELPING TO RAISE FUNDS TO HELP THE WONDERFUL WORK OF THE GIBRALTAR CANCER CENTRE (FORMALLY KNOWN AS THE LADY WILLIAMS CENTRE). The first centre was sited in a room at Transport House and known as the Lady Williams’ Cancer Day Care centre in recognition of Lady Williams. The support was immense and continuous from the community. The service expanded and moved to Devil’s Tower Road where for almost 30 years the service has provided support for people living with cancer in the community The New Centre is housed in a beautifully, restored colonial building in South Barracks Road on the south side of Gibraltar enjoying landscaped gardens and spectacular views. The restoration has been achieved thanks to the Gibraltar government with its interior re-designed in close collaboration with the Society to meet the needs of people who use the facilities. It is staffed by a registered nurse and a team of volunteers and is visited regularly by other health professionals such as dieticians and physiotherapists. There is a close partnership with the Gibraltar Health Authority Palliative Care team. A weekly survivors coffee morning is held every Monday. THEY HOPE TO EXTEND THESE SERVICES IN THE FUTURE AND ANY FUNDS RAISED WILL HELP TREMENDOUSLY.
Plans to run nurse led clinics, G.P. consultations, community physiotherapy sessions, a professional counselling service and a programme of therapeutic activities all of which will be tailored to suit the needs of the individual patient. This programme will include: • A NURSE ASSESSMENT: This one to one consultation with a specialist registered nurse usually takes 30 minutes. The nurse assesses a patient’s individual needs and concerns and is an ideal way for patients to get to know the staff who will be supporting them and to discover all that is on offer in terms of dedicated care and support. The patient is then offered a programme of care tailor made for their needs. • A YOUNGER PERSONS SESSION: This is dedicated to meeting the needs of the under 55s through individual and group support. • YOGA: As an aid to relaxation and a sense of well-being, offered by local yoga practitioners. Winter fun for those who look for it! Andalucia is one of those few places where you are spoilt for choice with the amount of activities that you can pursue, including winter sports. In fact Sierra Nevada is Europe’s most southern ski resort. Sierra Nevada (2100m to 3300m) offers direct access to 79 individual pistes, served by 24 ski lifts. The ski resort itself is above 1500m, so skiing or boarding back to the resort is usually possible. Pistes above 2500 m, guarantee skiing throughout the season. In any case the 25 snow cannons can increase the amount of natural snow if needed. Should you not wish to drive all the way there, Granada Airport is just 1 hour away from the resort. The ski courses, well above the treeline, are mostly long wide trails over a
healthy vertical drop of 1,300 meters. For beginners there are 3 ski schools available within the Borreguiles beginners’ area. Sierra Nevada is a medium sized ski area; nevertheless there are some exciting runs on the Monachil area as well as the steep descent from the top of Valeta II back down to Borreguiles. The resort is also offers a variety of snow sports including cross-country skiing, artistic skiing, telemark skiing, trekking and adventure skiing. Of course ski rental services are available. Remember you are still in Andalucia and even there it has built a reputation for aprés ski and for late night action. The bars and discotheques start to get busy after midnight and they carry on until 6 or 7 in the morning, when hopefully you will be sober enough to find your piste.

is said to derive from the Latin “Carne Vale” meaning “farewell to the flesh” again a merry making celebration to make the most before the start of lent. While most Latin countries make a big “fiesta” out of the theme this is not so in Spain due to the fact that it had to be discreetly celebrated because of General Franco’s oppression, whereby Carnival celebrations were abolished. It is only quite recently that Spain has started to see fancy dress parades and fancy carnival costumes in the streets. Elsewhere the celebration has gained ever increasing popularity throughout the Catholic world; “Il Carnevale” is celebrated in Venice, which is considered the birth place of Carnival, a tradition that still holds true and reflected throughout Italy. The most famous “Mardi Gras” is celebrated in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil and this year’s Rio Carnival 2014 dates: February 28th until March 4th. Rio has transformed this festival into the most exotic and best known carnivals in the world, turning it into a competition between the various districts of the city. The winner is the one that parades the best, the loudest, with the most “over the top” floats carrying bands and accompanied by dancers and
other performers wearing the most exotic and extravagant costumes. This is some party, I tell you! A most enjoyable events takes place in New Orleans, French Louisiana, known for its famous Mardi Gras Parade. The introduction of this festivity in North America is said to have taken place in 1704, when the King of France Louis XIV ordered the brothers Iberville and Bienville LeMoyne to sail from France to defend the French territories, which include the areas that now represent Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi. Upon arriving, the LeMoyne brothers found the mouth of a body of water, now known as the Mississippi River, and sailed upstream for a few miles until they located the perfect place to build a colony and nominated the area as “Point du Mardi Gras” now known as Venice in Louisiana. Unless you travel to celebrate a glorious carnival in Venice or Rio or elsewhere, perhaps you will make the most of what we have here on the Costa to re-educate and to make sure that indeed February is not a short sad month of the year as they would have you believe.

Romance is very much alive! This month the Prickly Pair rise to the occasion of St Valentine’s Day. It had to be said. Many thanks to all our readers for their valuable comments received over the Christmas and New Year period. I am glad you all enjoyed and survived the festivities intact. I like to think, in part, due to the many useful tips we provided and my selfless work for the Samaritans; yes I do like to give a little something back and manning the phones with my usual mix of common sense and morbid fascination for the poor unfortunates of society, gives me a cosy glow; not to mention some really good ammunition. So what do these sad B*****ds all have to whinge about? Well it would seem on average the main gripe would be loneliness and a general inability to get a hold of someone to s**g. 44

I would not be the sort of person to be too familiar with this particular malaise, but that doesn’t mean I can’t sympathize with Jane and Johnny no-mates, after all beauty as they say, is only skin deep. So what kind of advice do I offer to the Grinch’s? Well, luckily enough there is one day a year that could have been made for these poor unfortunates; a day when, without fear of ridicule, even Quasimodo himself can walk loud and proud into a card shop and buy a big, soppy, flower covered, overpriced piece of paper for the Esmeralda of his dreams. I am talking St Valentine’s Day; now nobody really knows the
actual truth behind the patron saint of ugly people, but it can be safely assumed that he was, like myself, a caring humanitarian and maybe even a latter-day champion of the underdog, again, like myself. One thing is certain however, and that is, thanks to his legacy, the aesthetically challenged are guaranteed at least one leg-over a year or at least a shot at one. The first port of call therefore, is the flower shop; all women like to receive flowers (Unless you are taking no chances, and going for a blind girl). Now the trick here is to bite the bullet and go for a really expensive bunch, a single red rose is all well and good if you have the kind of looks to carry off such a stingy gesture, but unless you are the Milk Tray Man type, do yourself a favour and look as if you don’t mind paying for a bit of the other. Chocolates are traditionally a love token, here again, you need to go for a big flash box, a family bag of “Revels” just isn’t going to swing it, and if I might add a word of advice, hold back on handing over the chockys until you see the way things are shaping up, after all a 10 euro box of chocolates is quite an investment and if the ice queen isn’t going to give out, you will need something to eat whilst waiting for your bus. What to wear is important, try not to wander too far away from
your usual mode of attire, keep in mind that you wear what you wear because you feel comfortable in it, being in a strange place, with a complete stranger, for the first time is uncomfortable enough as it is without having the point of a brand new Ben Sherman shirt collar burrowing its way into your shoulders. Avoid buying any new items of clothing as you may find yourself in some unfamiliar positions (if your luck is in) and therefore don’t want to be squirming about in too much polyester, I am sure I don’t need to tell you that a build up of static electricity, could lead to some nasty scorching! A favourite starting point for the repugnant Romeo is a darkened restaurant and this time honoured tradition of meeting the intended victim in the dark and filling them up with alcohol as quickly as possible has worked miracles for some over the years, take for example Chris Evans and Billie Piper (although having said, a few million pounds works just as well as a bat cave!) At the end of the day, the path of true love never runs smooth and beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so my advice to all those seeking true love but carrying the burden of severe ugly stick abuse, would be, remember, not all frogs turn into prince charming, but that didn’t stop Miss Piggy and she was a bit of a babe!
