The criteria used seems to be one of copying other businesses because they seem to be doing well. Doesn´t anyone pay attention to market size? That is the number of buyers and sellers available for the product? The Costa del Sol is a small market and the volume of business it can support is limited to its size, which is further reduced by language and consumer level boundaries. The more competitors the more the size of the market is reduced with the result that a buyer’s market is created. This is when the buyer dictates the price and competitors have to reduce prices to be able to sell. Add to this the economic crisis and cheap is never cheap enough, there is always someone cheaper. Quality of product and services is then reduced and even lost to cut costs. So what makes the fish and chip shop owner owner think that he can become another publisher despite the excess of publications around? What makes a bar open near to or next to another? take part of the clients away so neither can make a living? If you need to go into business do not commit financial suicide, look for the right opportunities, research properly and be sure you can provide the right quality product at the right price.

This year Easter seems to have had more success than last year, the weather certainly helped to bring people to the coast. The Spanish press reports that the economy in Spain is improving, unfortunately you never know if this is true or just another distorted comment to spur people on. The fact is that wages on the Costa are still poor and visitors have less to spend per capita. I hope that this time we have touched bottom and are starting to surface, it is unfortunate that it is the working population and businesses that are paying for the blunders of politicians to save the economy. They seem to forget that it is the wealth of the people that creates the wealth of a nation, not the other way around. Este año la semana santa parece haber tenido más éxito que el año pasado, el buen tiempo sin duda ayudó a los turistas a visitar la costa. La prensa española informa de que la economía está mejorando en España, por desgracia, nunca se sabe si esto es verdad o sólo otro comentario distorsionado para estimular a la gente. El hecho es que los salarios de la Costa siguen siendo pobres y los visitantes tienen menos para gastar por persona. Espero que ya hayamos fondo y estemos empezando a resurgir. Es lamentable que la población activa y las empresas estén pagando por los errores de los políticos para salvar la economía. Parecen olvidar que es la riqueza de la gente la que crea la riqueza de una nación, y no al revés.

A simple demonstration for parents of skills acquired by their children of all ages. It was a most successful event and, as can be seen from the photos, it was extremely well attended by parents as well as Pony Club members and students. What noise? It’s fun! According to a report named “Noise & Health” Spain is the second noisiest country in the world after Japan, exceeding the tolerance limit of 65 dB set by WHO and affecting some 9 million people or 20% of the population. A survey among school children in the Balearic Islands showed that the hearing level of 10% of the children was below normal. Another report in Valencia stated that 40% of adults had a significantly poor level of hearing while the average for all of Spain is estimated at 35 percent. This might explain why so often people in Spain shout at each other as opposed to carrying out a quiet conversation. E.U. legislation has set 65 dB as the maximum acceptable limit of noise a person can tolerate on a daily basis, while levels between 70-125 dB can be painful, and the noise becomes unbearable when reaching 140 dB. A bird singing does not exceed 10 dB, sounding one’s horn may reach 90 dB, and a disco and a motorcycle without muffler may reach 110 and 115 dB, respectively. According to Antonio Flores, head lawyer at a Spanish law firm, every Town Hall in Spain counts with very specific rules on what is the maximum tolerable noise. These rules are pretty much standardized throughout the country, following the recommendations set by the World Health Organisation. The Town Halls have to act and stop any activity breaching the statutory noise levels. In the first instance the persons causing the nuisance are responsible, however if the Town Hall does not act, it becomes ultimately responsible. Antonio Flores quotes the “El Copo” case whereby the Andalucian Supreme Court ordered the Velez Malaga Town Hall to compensate 18 inhabitants for damages 12

with €5 million for not acting against a pub emitting noises in excess of 120 dB. All the same the fact is that Spain still is the second noisiest country in the world, probably because noise is not taken as seriously as it should, especially in the summer. It is all calm and quiet in winter, but as soon s the weather improves there go the bars with their loud music and karaokes, even in the streets with Town Hall permission; motorbikes with deliberately elevated noise levels; cars hooting even on Sundays early `hours; dogs locked out on balconies barking their heads off; loud motorised sweeping machinery; building noises after 8pm and weekends; but not once have I seen any preventive measures being taken or any motorbike being stopped for disturbing the peace. On one occasion, while having a supposedly nice quiet meal in a restaurant

with friends, we had to shout at each other because of the loud karaoke in a nearby bar. In the end I called the local police but they never bothered to turn up. What surprised me is the unreasonable amount of tolerance by the restaurant owner. Was it the case that he knew he’d be wasting his time? Sound is unwanted when it interferes with normal activities such as sleeping, conversation, or disrupts or diminishes one’s quality of life. Noise pollution is the disturbing or excessive noise that may harm the activity or balance of human or animal life. In addition to hearing loss, high noise levels can contribute to cardiovascular effects in humans, a rise in blood pressure, and an increase in stress and vasoconstriction, and an increased incidence of coronary artery disease. If there was some respect for other peoples’

rights and if people complained to make sure that their rights to health are protected, I think that Spain may then become a quieter and even more pleasant place to live in. The following is a guideline to different noise levels:

The most effective way to stop smoking is to just stop and I am talking from experience. Unfortunately the addictive nicotine combined with the psychological habit of placing a cigarette in the mouth repeatedly make giving up extremely difficult.

All the same, the increasing popularity of e-cigarettes is also giving rise to other arguments, some of which demand they should be banned, which of course is ridiculous. The argument being that you are inhaling substances not meant to enter your lungs because the chemicals used in the vapour are not fully disclosed. There is no evidence so far that e-cigarette are a health threat so why not ban conventional cigarettes instead? What chemicals are being used in conventional cigarettes?

The other argument is that while there is no evidence that people are quitting to smoke as a result of using e-cigarettes, they express concern that the use of flavours such as candy, bubble gum and chocolate are targeting children and teenagers in order to cultivate a new generation of users.

This month we are introduced to an easy but refreshing and delicious starter named after Vittore Carpaccio, the Venetian Renaissance painter known for his use of brilliant reds and whites.

Ingredients FOR THE SAUCE: • 1 egg yolk • 1 tsp. white wine vinegar or red wine vinegar • 2 pinches dry mustard • Salt and freshly ground white pepper • ¾ cup olive oil • Juice of ½ lemon • 1–2 dashes Worcestershire sauce, or to taste • 1½ tsp. milk • Salt and freshly ground white pepper

FOR THE CARPACCIO: • 1½ lbs. boned shell of beef, trimmed of all fat, sinew, and gristle

Preparation: 1. For the sauce: Make a mayonnaise by putting egg yolk, vinegar, mustard, and a little salt and pepper in a medium mixing bowl and whisking until foamy and thoroughly blended. Add ¼ cup of the oil drop by drop, whisking constantly. Gradually add the rest of the oil in a thin, steady stream, continuing to whisk as the mayonnaise thickens. Add 1 tbsp. of the lemon juice and seasoning, whisking in a little beef or chicken broth (or water) to thin the mayonnaise, if you like. 2. Put ½ cup mayonnaise (keep the rest) in a small mixing bowl; whisk in Worcestershire and ¼ tsp. of the lemon juice and enough milk to make a thin sauce that just coats the back of a wooden spoon. Season to taste with salt and pepper. 3. Make sure the beef is very cold, and then slice into the thinnest possible slices, using a razor-sharp slicing knife. Divide slices among six small chilled plates, arranging them in one thin layer, covering the surface completely. Drizzle some of the sauce over the meat on each plate and serve immediately. 18

“The king of fruits” is one of the most popular, nutritionally rich fruits with unique flavour, fragrance, taste, and heath promoting qualities make it a common ingredient in new functional foods. Mangoes have been cultivated in South Asia for thousands of years and they are also grown in Andalucía, one of the few places in mainland Europe that allows the growth of tropical plants and fruit trees. Unripe mangoes can be kept at room temperature for a few days to ripen keep them in paper covers.

Health benefits of Mangoes 1. Mango fruit is rich in pre-biotic dietary fibrer, vitamins, minerals, and poly-phenolic flavonoid antioxidant compounds. 2. According to new research study, mango fruit has been found to protect against colon, breast, leukaemia and prostate cancers. Several trial studies suggest that polyphenolic anti-oxidant compounds in mango are known to offer protection against breast and colon cancers. 3. Mango fruit is an excellent source of Vitamin-A, 100 grs. of fresh fruit provides 25% of recommended daily levels of vitamin A. It is also a very good source of vitamin-B6 and vitamin C 4. Additionally, mango peel is also rich in phytonutrients, such as the pigment antioxidants like carotenoids and polyphenols, but eating the skin can cause dermatitis. 20

The Golden Wok Chinese Open Buffet â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Estepona Self service open buffet Chinese restaurants seem to have started a new trend here on the Costa del Sol. I am not sure about other parts of the globe, but I have certainly seen them in New York, when I visited recently. It stands to reason that the concept is appealing to diners when they are not restricted to a menu. There is no waiting and you can help yourself to a very wide variety of dishes including Sushi without restriction and at a fixed price. You can also help yourself to a good selection of fresh uncooked meats, fish, sea food and vegetables that can be stir fried for you by the chef on the spot. I have visited several such restaurants from Los Barrios to Marbella, but the one I liked best is without a doubt the Golden Wok. The ambience and decor are modern and up market by comparison, yet at the same price as any of the others. I also found that the service was excellent even for a self serve restaurant. I rather liked the presentation of the food in their white ceramic dishes: clean, fresh and rather appealing. The fact that you can enjoy your meal on the terrace by the swimming pool is an appealing added bonus. I love Chinese food and I recommend the Golden Wok; try it, you will not be disappointed.

Most trips pass off without incident but if the worst happens through serious illness or accident, it can be devastating emotionally and financially for you and your family.

EU Citizens travelling within the EU:

The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is valid for temporary visitors to another EU country without it you may be charged for your treatment. The application should be made before travelling and it is usually valid for three to five years. If you stop being a UK resident, you need to return your EHIC to the Department of Health. As a UK state pensioner living in Spain and registered for healthcare with an S1, the UK will issue your EHIC to use on a temporary stay in the UK and a third EU country. For more information call the Overseas Healthcare Team on +44 191 218 1999. If you work in Spain and pay social security there, you will get the Spanish health card from the local social security office. The EHIC gives you access to temporary medical health care provided by the state under the same conditions as a national of that country. Be aware that each country’s healthcare system is different. Free services at home might not be free in Spain (i.e.: prescriptions). The EHIC does not give you access to private healthcare and you will be expected to pay at the time of such treatment. So, the EHIC is not an alternative to travel insurance. It does not cover any private healthcare neither does it cover costs such as a return flight or lost/ stolen property.

Cover from other sources: If you have private insurance in your home country, check your policy to see if it offers cover whilst 34

temporarily abroad. For example Sanitas offers 10,000€ health cover per trip abroad, so check the limits of your cover and any restrictions. Also check for any geographic limits, some insurers may not cover you outside Europe, while others like for example Bupa International, only cover you in the US if you have specifically purchased that cover. Some credit card companies and banks offer their customers travel insurance as part of the deal, but check the terms and make sure they meet your needs. Most policies are reasonably priced and give peace of mind however it is important to choose one that meets your needs. Here are some facts to consider. 1. Most policies do not cover pre-existing conditions. However, you may be covered if your condition is stable and needs control by medication. You must make a full and accurate declaration of your medical history so you know exactly what you are covered for. 2. Check the geographic and financial limits and make sure they meet your needs. 3. Check it covers activities you may undertake whilst abroad and the definition of “dangerous activities” – you may be surprised! 4. Do you want to include non medical cover – loss of luggage, money etc 5. Is there a 24 hour emergency helpline and what services do they offer.

6. If you are a frequent traveller check if an annual policy is available and take care of insurance needs for the year.

So where is this pleasure dome? Nestling quietly in the foothills with uninterrupted views of the magnificent countryside; Alhaurin Prison has become the favourite “Hide-out” of the rich and famous of Marbella. It isn’t difficult to see why Marbella’s society have decided to head inland this summer and wait for the “Heat” to die down on the coast. So just what does Alhaurin Prison have to offer for the jet set? For those used to fine cuisine and having 40

their pick of the five star restaurants of Marbella; Alhaurin Prison’s “Canteen” may seem a little rustic. The set menu is probably your best option and offers a limited but wholesome choice of brown stuffs in thin gravy. You may opt to try the “Tray” meal, this is quite an experience for the first time visitor to Alhaurin Prison and there are strict rules of etiquette involved, but these are usually quick and easy to pick up and there are always a few long term guests hanging around who are more than happy to explain the intricacies to you.

Once you have been served your meal it is customary to “Shuffle” slowly to one of the long tables, where, if you are lucky, you will find one of your former colleagues enjoying their chosen repast. However, the dining hall does become rather full at certain times of the day and you may find yourself sharing a table with some of those charming, aforementioned long term guests; this is the perfect opportunity for you to practice some of those negotiating skills for which you are so famous, and by the simple act of bartering some of your brown lumpy stuff in exchange for a much lower value potato, you can forge strong, valuable future friendships. After your meal why not relax over a game of Pool; here again, the tables do become very busy, so be prepared to stump up quite a lot of “Snout” to secure a game; however, this can be won back if you are willing to challenge the player already on the table. Make sure you fully understand the rules before offering to make the challenge and that it is the game of Pool you are referring to; painful mistakes have occurred in the past when a new guest has offered to “pot some balls” without making it quite clear he meant on the snooker table. Moving on to the evening’s entertainment, a strict dress code operates at all times and you will be expected to wear this year’s “must have” suit.
