The decline of newspapers has been widely debated as the industry has faced soaring newsprint prices, slumping advert sales, the loss of much classified advertising and precipitous drops in circulation with the result that in recent years the number of newspapers slated for closure, bankruptcy or severe cutbacks has risen worldwide. Internet and television are the main reasons for the drop in newspapers demand, which, combined with the soaring print costs, wastage in circulation and short publication life, make newspaper publishing an unattractive business, especially with the reduced advertising revenue due to the crisis. and I look Although the same applies to all printed matter, professional magazines have some distinct advantage over newspapers. People like to flick physically through colourful, well designed pages and more importantly magazines can reach a targeted audience with a substantially reduced circulation loss. Whereas newspapers are discarded from one day to the next, magazines are kept on from one edition to the next; they are read by more than one person and even looked at or read more than once by the same person. Naturally I am talking of professional magazines and not a collection of adverts bound together to look like a magazine. Web Express Guide is well ahead of its time because it is the only internet Portal also printed as a magazine.

editor page If you wish to have a break from work, this is probably the best time of year for most of us, early November, before Christmas. I have just taken the opportunity to visit family in different parts of England and I am glad I have done so, I think it was well deserved, even if I say so myself. Clearly I did not miss out on anything whilst I was away and now it’s back to work and I look forward to the beginning of a new year.

IN MY OPINION
L’air de la Mer We are lucky to live by the seaside and more so on the Costa del Sol, but are we totally free from air pollution? NASA provides some answers. The number of privately owned motor cars registered in Andalucia continues to rise substantially, if you combine this with the number of tourist vehicles and other cars not registered in Spain, it is of little wonder that the air is just not as pollution free as it used to be. Considering that the only reliable way to travel in the region is by car it also stands to reason that the levels of pollution will continue to increase. WHO reports that in 2012 around 7 million people died globally as a result of air pollution exposure. “The risks from air pollution are now far greater than previously thought or understood, particularly for heart disease and strokes,” 12

said Dr Maria Neira, Director of WHO’s Department for Public Health. According to NASA and the Associated Landscape Contractors of America (ALCA), after a two year study they suggest that the common indoor plants may be an effective solution.
IN MY OPINION
A spokesman for NASA said that combining nature with technology can increase the effectiveness of plants in removing air pollutants as the roots of the plant slowly degrade the chemicals absorbed there. The study using about a dozen popular varieties of ornamental plants, NASA research on indoor plants has found that living plants are efficient at absorbing contaminants in the air. The research has consistently shown that living, green and flowering plants can remove several toxic chemicals from the air in building interiors. You can use plants in your home or office to improve
the quality of the air to make it a more pleasant place to live and work – where people feel better, perform better, any enjoy life more. Of course, in addition to plants, there are a number of “common sense” things we can do ourselves to reduce the level of pollution indoors as well as outdoors, for instance: • Turn off appliances and lights when you leave the room. • Recycle paper, plastic, glass bottles, cardboard, and aluminum cans. (This conserves energy and reduces production emissions.)
• Keep woodstoves and fireplaces well maintained. • Connect your outdoor lights and heating/ cooling to a timer or use solar power. • Wash clothes with warm or cold water instead of hot. • Use low water-based paints when decorating. • Choose not to smoke in your home, especially if you have children. If you or your visitors must smoke, then smoke outside.

Is it a dog’s life? Dogs give us total love and loyalty every day, but do we deserve it? Too many dogs are mistreated, made to fight, bred for profit and killed because they don’t have homes. What is it like in Spain?

Hunting dogs are the most abused, many are strays and lead a life on the brink of starvation. They are kept chained up day and night or caged in tight cages, only released for hunting usually at weekends. Often at the end of the season or when the dogs are ill or are finished with, they are dumped and left to fend for themselves or die.
Хотя некоторые из отчётов шокируют, часть кодекса, относящегося к жестокости по отношению к домашним животным является расплывчатой. consider it a waste of time to pursue. For example the cases like the one in Tarragona when 15 dogs were horribly mutilated and left to die but there were no prosecutions. What surprises me is that I see reports about dogs being abandoned by their British owners in Spain. Britain is world famous for its love of animals and its animal protection law and enforcement, so why is it that some some British expatriates dump their dogs by the side of motorways or leave them to starve and die of thirst in houses as the credit crunch forces them to abandon their Spanish dream? Only recently there was another case of a dog that was luckily discovered abandoned inside a property with no means of escape. So what happens to decent people when they come to Spain? Yes it is true that the intake of animals by charitable organisations has outstretched the available limits but in my 16

view there is no excuse for cruelty. Especially now that the restrictions on animal travel, particularly dogs, have been relaxed to the extent that my daughter can take her dog whenever she travel to the UK and even to the USA. Dogs are members of their individual families which they love, protect and are loyal to without question,; would you be cruel to a member of your family? If you see a dog suffering, do something about it!

Gimme Shelter (2013)
RECOMMENDED DVD
Drama Director: Ron Krauss Stars: Vanessa Hudgens, Rosario Dawson, Brendan Fraser A 16 years old pregnant teenager flees life with her drug-addicted mother and ends up living on the street. When she finds herself pregnant and alone, she takes shelter with her biological father, a wealthy Wall Streeter living in a New Jersey mansion with his wife and two young children. Her inability to adjust to her new circumstances, and her refusal to terminate her pregnancy, soon force her back onto the streets. Inspired by the real-life, David-and-Goliath story of Several Sources Shelters founder Kathy DiFiore, award-winning writer and director Ronald Krauss wrote his original screenplay while spending a year in a shelter for pregnant teens, and based his poignant screenplay on the lives of several of the shelter mothers.

It’s not just the Argentinian beef at Gauchos! A fantastic meal, a fantastic service and a fantastic presentation is what makes a fantastic restaurant. Last month we spoke about the quality of Argentinian beef and why the Argentinian way of cooking on charcoal or wood fire brings out the best flavour and aroma that beef can provide. On this occasion, we would like to highlight the importance of quality service and presentation. To start with, Gauchos is located at Laguna Village, which provides an upmarket sensation, almost an island by the beach with its own water canals by the restaurants at the front, and you have to cross over a bridge to reach Gauchos. The service on arrival is impeccable; politely warm and welcoming, and you are shown to a table with the least delay. Shortly after being asked for your choice of drinks or aperitif, 26

you are presented with a very comprehensive menu which is seasonally adjusted to provide the freshest vegetables of the time. We did not have to wait long for our starter. I was really amazed at the presentation of the food. The salad starter that I had chosen was presented like something reminiscing of a 5 star hotel restaurant in London and it was absolutely delicious. Every single dish selected was just as well presented; can you imagine the beef steaks? Honestly, if you really want to enjoy a perfect Argentinian meal I have no hesitation in recommending GAUCHOS. I think the prices are just right and the best part of it is that I would expect to pay at least twice what it actually cost for the meal

HEALTHLY EATING Eating regularly during the day is a vital part of staying healthy It keeps your blood sugar levels stable and hunger at bay. - By Sonia Fendley, Director of STM Nummos Life SL. Eating regularly also ensures you get all the essential nutrients you need.
How your blood sugar levels affect you: If you go for hours without eating, your blood sugar levels can drop, causing you to feel shaky, weak and nauseous. Low blood sugar levels also affect your concentration, energy levels and mood. Carbohydrates such as sugars and starch mainly determine your blood sugar levels. The effect of sugars from sweets,
biscuits and chocolate is unhelpful because they are quickly absorbed into the bloodstream and cause a rapid rise in your blood sugar levels followed by a rapid drop.
your blood sugar levels by choosing starchy foods that are low on the glycaemic index (GI). Aim for foods that have a low or moderate GI count, such as oats, pulses and wholemeal bread.
The effect of starch from bread, pasta, rice, cereals, beans and lentils are more steadily absorbed by your body and they keep your blood sugar levels stable over a longer period.
Apart from stopping you from functioning at your best in the short-term, sharp fluctuations in blood sugar levels can affect your longterm health. Studies have shown that people who eat a lot of high-GI foods have a greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
Aim for a slower burn: You can control fluctuations in

Health & Beauty
Don’t skip breakfast: Your blood sugar levels drop at night, it’s important to refuel your body first thing in the morning. Ideally, breakfast should contain about 25 percent of your daily calorie intake, and have a good mix of starchy carbohydrates, protein and fibre. It’s also a good opportunity to add a serving of fruit to help clock up your recommended daily allowance. Healthy breakfast choices: Muesli and porridge contain plenty of slow-burn starchy carbohydrates and fibre. Fruit such as dried apricots, grapefruit, kiwi fruit, bananas or oranges are rich in vitamins and will help to sweeten your cereal. Dairy products such as skimmed or semiskimmed milk and low-fat yoghurts are rich in protein and calcium.
Make time for lunch: Lunch should be the largest meal of the day, but often this simply isn’t practical. Some people miss lunch entirely, or grab a sandwich and eat it on the move. Stop yourself from falling into the trap of missing lunch, plan ahead and prepare a healthy packed lunch to take to work. A lunch based heavily on carbohydrates can sometimes leave you feeling sluggish and sleepy in the afternoon. Eating protein-rich foods with smaller portions of bread, potatoes and rice should help to prevent this. Adding a
34
www.webexpressguide.com
piece of fresh fruit or a salad will help to keep you on course for the recommended daily five servings of fruit and vegetables.
Healthy lunch choices: Protein-rich foods such as chicken, lean meat, oily fish (such as tuna, smoked trout or mackerel), eggs, tofu, and nut or bean pâté. also nuts cheese, cottage or yoghurt rice, pasta, cooked chickpeas, beans, kidney peppers, raw sliced vegetables, grated provide a variety for a lowfat soup or a sandwich. Rye bread, pumpernickel, pitta bread and oatcakes are ideal slow-burning accompaniments for your salad, soup or sandwich.
Snacking sensibly: There is nothing wrong with having a snack to overcome the occasional energy dip during the day. The trick is to go for low-fat snacks that will satisfy your hunger for longer; such as fresh fruit, dried fruit, raw vegetables, a handful of nuts and seeds, even a low-fat fruit yoghurt or fruit smoothie or one rich tea biscuit. Drink plenty of fluids : Dehydration causes loss of concentration, dipping energy levels and headaches, and it’s easy to forget to stay hydrated when you are busy. Keep your fluid levels up by drinking water, juice or herbal teas. Aim for at least six to eight glasses of fluid a day and limit your caffeine intake.

Choose your weapon:
Pen or Sword? Unfortunately I don’t speak French and was therefore unable to understand your correspondence; they say that French is one of the world’s most beautiful languages (well the French do) however, some of the words I looked up in the phrase book weren’t very beautiful at all! I can only assume that I may have inadvertently upset some of my French fans. Edward Bulwer Lytton once
36
www.webexpressguide.com
said “The pen is mightier than the sword” and in the hand of Mr. Lytton it may well have been, but as a weapon for the average man. or indeed woman, the humble pen can become a lot more frightening than any sword you are likely to encounter. Ex pats from all over Europe have come to roost in this glorious part of Spain, even some French! And by and large, the majority of settlers
tend to behave themselves. However, a small contingent seem to suddenly develop an overwhelming desire to take up their pen and proceed to bore to death as many people as possible by churning out a never ending stream of drivel. Now, if back in your own country you were a hairdresser, in the SAS, a milkman or aircraft engineer, then that is what you were. James Bond is a secret agent
and I wouldn’t mind betting that he never had a summer job at Burger King, by the same token, Shakespeare is remembered as a writer; nowhere in history does it mention that before taking up his mighty pen, Mr. Shakespeare had a burgeoning career emptying middens. To real writers (those of us that do it for a living) this deluge of boring, waffling old nonsense creates a niggling little problem. If you pick up a magazine and find yourself confronted by the never ending, never interesting, saga of some boring old farts earlier life as a younger fart, then you may be, understandably, wary of picking up a magazine ever again. This is the problem therefore for professional writers; the literary waters are being muddied by bored ex pats, with too much time on their hands and a misguided belief that anybody would be remotely interested in what they got up to during their little stint in the army, police force, boy scouts or anywhere else come to that. Another little group wishing to share their yawn making experiences with us are the “long term” ex pats (you know the ones, “we have been here 10, 20, 30 years”) SO WHAT? These people are terminally boring and will proceed to tell you that they remember “when all this was just fields/Fincas/Cockroach farms etc... ad infinitum. The worst of this particular bad bunch are the ones that started businesses here a few years ago and now feel the need to share their knowledge with us, not to mention their hilarious little anecdotes and failures. It has always been my experience that people who feel the need, and indeed encourage having words like “the warped mind of ” levelled at themselves, usually are the complete opposite and if you are expecting to be greeted by a zany, laugh a minute raconteur, then you are going to be sorely disappointed meeting the only person guaranteed to send you to
sleep faster than the Sandman. The world has shrunk since “warped mind”, “Zany”, “crazy” guy/gal thought that drifting around a few bits of the Mediterranean was sooo… Bohemian and nowadays Mr and Mrs Average are visiting far flung places that these previous people have never heard of, yet alone visited. The difference, luckily, is that the modern traveller doesn’t feel the need to start writing all about their little jaunt (except for the blogs on the internet, but no one takes any notice of those anyway) plus, exercising a far less selfish and cavalier attitude towards their children’s future and education by not dragging them away from their schools or potential universities, simply to satisfy their own misguided ends. The world is full of people who think that their lives have been more interesting than anybody else’s, but the fact of the matter is, as far back as Georgian times young people were travelling all over Europe on their “Grand tours” so let’s face it, there was nothing left to discover here 20-30 years ago that wasn’t already passé. It is also so archetypal British to talk about the Spain of 20+ years previous as if it was some third world backwater; the bloody old nuisances who turned up here at that time, love to use the phrase “undiscovered Spain” which is b*****ks really, as between the Romans, Moors and the Spanish themselves there can’t have been much left for a few drunken, halfwit Brits to stumble upon. Where I come from there is a very nice Spanish restaurant run by a guy from Seville, he has owned his business in England for over 30 years and in all that time he has never once felt the need to write to the local magazines with uninteresting little anecdotes, he has never claimed to have “discovered” unspoilt Romford and I have never heard him say “I remember Southend when it was all just fields!” www.webexpressguide.com

VIRTUAL HUMOUR
When I was younger I hated going to weddings... it seemed that all of my aunts and the grandmotherly types used to come up to me, poking me in the ribs and cackling, telling me, “You’re next.” They stopped that shit after I started doing the same thing to them at funerals. A lawyer, an economist, and a teacher were going to the bathroom. The lawyer gets done, washes his hands, and then proceeds to use almost the entire roll of paper towels to dry his hands. He says “I was taught to be thorough.” The economist gets done, washes his hands, but uses only one paper towel. He says “I was taught to be environmentally friendly.” The teacher gets done and leaves without washing his hands. He says “I was taught not to piss on my hands.” There are a lot of people who can’t understand how we ran out of oil here in the USA. Well, here’s the answer: It’s simple... nobody bothered to check the oil. Didn’t know we were getting low. And of course the reason for that is geographical. All the oil is in Texas, Oklahoma and Alaska, and all the dipsticks are in Washington, D.C. A little boy asked his mother: - Mummy, why are you white and I am black? - Don’t even ask me that, when I remember that party..., you’re lucky you don’t bark.

editor@webexpressguide.com
www.webexpressguide.com
«licencia de obras»).
