editor page September, end of summer, back to school; although this summer was unusually hot and rather crowded, I think it may have shown the world that the Costa del Sol is after all one of the best options available for a holiday or indeed even a new home. The increase of French, German, Italian and even other nationals seems to have compensated to some extent for the reduction of English residents and Russian visitors. Hopefully we shall soon return to business the whole year round and not just in summer. TRIPADVISOR IS A DISGRACE Italy fines TripAdvisor €500,000 (£392,000 / US$600,000) over false reviews – It is very clear that TripAdvisor has no way of detecting fake reviews and / or damaging lies. Yet again TripAdvisor shows it has ZERO ways to safeguard the listings that are “Forced” onto their site, but is completely open to devastating abuse against establishment owners.

El Castillo restaurant in Benahavís is NOT CLOSED despite what Tripadvisor states on its useless and often defamatory information pages. Trying to put this right has been impossible unless one send an email disclosing one’s own information or using your Google or Facebook account allowing them to obtain details of all your contacts. If eventually you find a phone number you then discover how uninterested they really are in correcting their business destroying information and just simply ignore your request to correct. Search for Italian restaurants in Benahavís. You know what? Tripadvisor shows there are 3, a complete lie. They are restaurants all right but far from Italian. This is pure deception. In my opinion

Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s look at one of the clearest examples. It took some 500 years for the Roman Empire to become the greatest world superpower so much so that in our modern civilisation most countries recognised and adopted their democratic political system (Senatus Populusque Romanus) even most of todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s legislation has been modelled on Roman Law. So what happened? The decline and final disintegration is due to some very clear events that seem to be repeating themselves in present times yet we are failing to take warning The most obvious cause of the collapse has been attributed to some 300 groups of barbarians (the Visigoths, the Vandals, the Huns etc) invading and attacking the empire from all sides, diluting the military power, traditions and beliefs to its final disappearance. Now compare this to the daily invasion of refugees coming from Africa and Middle Eastern countries. What are we doing about it? Are we such magnanimous humanitarians that we are prepared to sacrifice our values, traditions, religions and beliefs to be drowned and dissipated by such invaders? Unfortunately, once they are here they do not adapt, they multiply and even expect us to adapt to their customs and beliefs. Granted no fighting is taking place, it is all done civilly, except perhaps for the exceptions that started to rear their ugly head in Greece. Nevertheless it is an invasion not dissimilar to that of the Roman Empire. So what are we doing about it? Romans lost their trust on their leaders as we seem to have lost it in ours and the banks. One other relevant factor that contributed to the downfall of the Empire has been the loss of religious beliefs, traditions and Roman values as they were gradually replaced by the growth of Christianity. We certainly seem to be losing our faith in Christianity while other religions, one in particular, are getting an increasingly stronger foothold. The fall of the Roman Empire is not an isolated case; one can take a look at other historical events that caused the fall of other great empires. China was also a mighty Empire once, however its collapse is due to the unwillingness to trade with foreign powers and the change from monarchy 14

to a corrupt democracy where political corruption yet again plays an important destructive role. China today is one of the largest world economies due to its massive 1.3 million population playing an influential role on the global economy yet it is still considered a developing country. Corruption, overproduction for the export sector and the ban on Chinese to invest abroad combined with the massive amount of corporate borrowing over several years to build high rise constructions in different towns which remain mainly unoccupied might explain the Chinese market crash in July and the more recent devaluation of the currency that wiped out trillions of its people’s savings. Doesn’t this represent another case of failing to learn from past history? “Nihil novi sub soli” (there is nothing new under the sun) so why do we keep repeating the same mistakes over and over again? We do not seem to learn do we? Clearly corruption and fraud driven by greed are the underlying factors that lead to the destruction of individuals and nations but I really fail to see where the remedy might lie. If religion and the fear of God are intended to touch the conscience and curb corruption we seem to be on a loser.

The recipe by the Chef at COCOMO Cocktail Bar & Restaurant

Pork with asparagus, piquillo peppers and Butter Beans with chorizo Ingredients • • • • • • • • • • • •

500g/1lb 1oz Pre Cooked Butter beans 3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 1 banana shallot, peeled, finely chopped 125g/4½oz spicy chorizo (picante), cut into thin slices 1 tbsp chopped fresh flat leaf parsley 4 pork chops 2 garlic cloves, peeled, finely sliced 8 piquillo peppers sliced 200g/7¼oz asparagus 2 tbsp sherry vinegar Salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 tsp Spanish smoked paprika

4. Add the cooked butter beans to the pan and, using a the back of a fork roughly crush the beans. Stir in the chopped parsley and keep warm. 5. Meanwhile, heat an ovenproof griddle pan until hot. Rub one tablespoon of the oil over the pork chops and fry for 3-4 minutes on each side. Transfer to the oven to roast for a further 4-5 minutes, or until cooked through.

1. Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6.

6. Heat the remaining tablespoon of oil in a frying pan and fry the garlic for 30 seconds. Add the pepper and asparagus and cook for a further two minutes.

2. Cook the Butter beans in a pan of boiling water for 12-15 minutes, or until tender. Drain and set aside.

7. Deglaze the pan with the vinegar and season, to taste, with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

3. Heat one tablespoon of the olive oil in a frying pan and fry the shallot and chorizo for 2-3 minutes, or until the shallot is soft and oil is released from the chorizo.

After a break of almost 2 and half months during which bedtimes are later than usual getting back to normality can be a struggle. Although the return to school for us parents is good news, for the children it is a different matter. In most cases it is difficult for them to adapt themselves to the school routine in the first weeks; we must understand them because it also happens to us. Which one of us is happy to return to work following a few days without obligations? Who jumps with joy at the prospect of returning to the office after a holiday? It helps them to see that we understand and we must look for the positive points of the return to the school: •

It is also important to involve the child in the purchase of the school kits, choosing colours, etc. together. We must make them participants of all the changes that affect them directly. It is also advisable to commence earlier bedtimes sooner so that the change is not so sudden. Our children are our mirror: If we are enthusiasts and happy, they also it will be. If however we are negative and pessimists, they will be timid and shy children. If possible accompany your child to school on the first day of term; this small effort can help immensely in settling their anxieties. Remember to keep goodbyes brief or you will make it more difficult. Collecting them later that afternoon they will be full of stories about their day, enjoy listening.

Who do you think What you see is what you get; I have never pretended to be someone else. I have always done the job I was trained for and I am quite happy and proud to admit it. However, living here on the Costa del Sol, I can see how tempting and how easy it can be to be someone else. With a bit of P.R., a lot of charity dos attendances and quite a lot of bullshit I could have been a descendant from German aristocracy and, as my ancestors were Jewish, I could very easily become Prickly von Cohen. But there is a trick in reinventing yourself in the first place and this is that you must inject just a tiny amount of truth, hopefully something that appears reasonable but that cannot be easily checked. After the number of years that I have lived on this Costa, I have seen some incredible transformations; from some rich business man’s humble bit on the side mistresses to company directors of all types of businesses, normally something of which they know nothing about, yet suddenly they seem to have studied and trained for it since childhood. Businesses that are set up with payoffs from said rich men when they were replaced by younger models or when they decided to stay with the smarter wife, as mistress was the cheaper option (no kids). Common sense should also tell these transformers, as I call them, that if they used one organ on their bodies 46

to get where they are, there’s no point now trying to use another organ (the brain) to suddenly become the female version of Stephen Hawkins. Some typical examples of transformations are: • Wall painters suddenly transforming into interior designers. • Opticians transforming into eye fashion experts. • Women who shopped a lot, suddenly become fashion designers just because they get a photographer, a hotel and some friends to some get together. Go on impress me! Get Kate Moss, Claudia Schaeffer or even Naomi Campbell! Not! • The sad computer nerds changing into graphic designers & CEOs. •

Some are selling second hand dresses and calling them vintage Haûte Couture. • Others making cheap rubbish jewellery and pretending to be the Coast’s answer to Cartier. • P.R. and promotion experts thinking that getting a load of half dressed wannabe models, dressed as Rio Carnival dancers for local beach bars means putting them in the same bracket as Saatchi & Saatchi. • Others who started by clipping cheap photocopies together and reporting what’s going on locally (usually dogs shows) and boring dinner dances for old people at golf courses in aid of dogs, suddenly become Rupert Murdock. • Doctors of cosmetic surgery suddenly are harmonising art and science when I thought they just sucked out as much fat as possible or cut bits out. Well may be I am just old fashioned but not gullible.

• Somebody who can use an old fashioned camera becomes a society photographer, magically up there with David Bailey. Show me your photos of real stars love, not other transformers at beach bars in the summer. Even I can do that! Still next time I see you out and about and give you that knowing wink, you’ll know I have transformed momentarily into being discreet as usual.
