and Ghosts It’s that time of year again when children start ‘Trick or treating’ and adults dress up in silly costumes. - By Count De La Perrelle Interestingly the north of Spain tends to celebrate Halloween more than the rest of the Country. There is some evidence that northern regions had Celtic-speaking inhabitants around 2500-3000 years ago, mixing with the indigenous population and creating their own cultural region there. In fact in these particular regions today there is a growing Celtic revival which is proving popular with holiday makers from Celtic loving countries.
Halloween
developed from an ancient Celtic festival celebrated some 2000 years ago in the United Kingdom, Ireland, and north-western France. The festival was called

Samhain, which means “summer’s end.” It marked the beginning of the dark winter season and was celebrated around November 1st. In the 800’s, the Christian Church established the 1st of November as All Saints’ Day. All Saints’, called All Hallows, therefore the night before was known as All Hallows’ Eve, abbreviated to All Hallow e’en. Some old pagan customs were maintained and some people put out food for their ancestors, or they left a lantern burning in the window so that ghosts could find their way home for the night.
Dressing up:
All the costumes and funny faces have Pagan Celtic roots. One theory is they dressed as ghouls to fool evil spirits let loose on October 31, so as not to be possessed by them. Another theory is they
dressed in costume just for fun and to make mischief. Yet another theory is that faeries would dress as beggars asking for food, which would also be the origins of the “trick or treat” practice.
Trick or Treat: This practice might have
had its start in the legend from Celtic days that faeries would dress as beggars going from door to door asking for food, and those that did not show hospitality would be harshly dealt with by these magical faeries. On All Souls Day, the poor would beg for “Soul Cakes” (sweet pastries) in exchange for prayers for their departed loved ones, expediting their passage to heaven. Sometimes costumed groups would sing and perform in exchange for food, ale, or money.
‘Jack o’lanterns’: This hails from the Irish folk tale of Jack, who tricked the devil, but was not allowed in heaven or in hell. The devil, taking pity of Jack, gave him an ember to light his way on his eternal walks on Earth, carried in a hollowed out turnip. Because of their size and availability, pumpkins were substituted for turnips in the United States.
Ghost Stories:
Ghost stories probably have their roots in the original Celtic belief that the spirits of the dead (both good and bad) wandered the Earth on October 31 (Samhain). In the United States today, they are used to amuse and scare children (and some adults) to get them in the “spirit” of Halloween. It is interesting to note that many years ago there wasn’t even a hint of costumes, scary rubber faces and the latest in witch fashion here in Andalucia but now it seems that the Halloween phenomena has really caught on it is increasingly considered harmless fun rather than a satanic festival. Even the supermarkets have jumped on the Halloween bandwagon and are using it as an excuse to get the customers in, looking to buy ‘huesos de santo’ or ‘bunuelos de viento’ that are typically eaten at this time of year. I think that Halloween is now just another countdown to the inevitable Christmas.

Now pay for the Price of greed! Many have left the Costa, some have gone back to their countries, others have moved to what appear to be more appealing countries. What’s gone wrong?
There is always a valid reason when things do not quite work out to plan and the economic step back on the Costa del Sol is no exception. In my opnion that there are several reasons that have contributed to the economic setback. Yes, it is true that income on the Costa is “imported” from other countries, however I do believe that nowadays this statement needs qualifying somewhat. “Experts” and newspapers love painting dark, gloomy www.webexpressguide.com

pictures for the sake of making an impact. They told us that the weakness of the USA economy affected the stock market and therefore the economy globally, now they put the blame on China but the real truth is that the economic crisis persists all over the world. Whatever they want to try and make you believe, homes are still being repossessed by the score, unemployment figures are still high and poverty is still rife. I am no financial expert but commonsense dictates that indeed there is a serious crisis in most countries resulting in investors staying put, while property investment in Southern Spain has lost its appeal. However, in my humble opinion, the few will continue to prosper at expense of the many despite what
the experts say. This predicament is self inflicted as a result of greed. Take greed out of the equation and conditions will get into the right perspective again. One can start with excessive taxation that totally deflates any entrepreneurial enthusiasm. What people seem to ask themselves is “what is the point of working or starting business and employing others when all our efforts seem to be taken away by the government and banks?” What makes it worse is the knowledge that so much of our hard earned money is being devoured by politicians and others in power often to line their own pockets even through bribes, fraud and corruption. It is greed that has resulted in building massive surplus property stocks; it is greed that has encouraged the enormous borrowing needed to build such stocks; it is the estate agents who have incited investors to speculate “on plans” under the false prospect that sales at a profit before completion would always be possible, thus creating an upside-down pyramid. It is the army of estate agents, all competing for the same market that created a “gold fever” environment resulting in prices rising in all quarters. Food, rents,

and clothes and so on, all increased rapidly and unreasonably, just because everyone wanted a piece of the action. Having said this, let’s add another two ingredients to the cocktail. Let’s start with the loss of confidence in the Spanish property market as a result of illegal sales we all know about. Then let’s move on to those unimaginative business people, who quite simply copy what others do because it seems to work, regardless of the fact that they have no idea of the trade or profession and even less idea of the market they just moved into. Too many estate agents, too many publications, marketing companies, furniture shops, web page and graphic designers, kitchen suppliers, interior designers and too many of several others, all trying to make a living from the same activity just because it seems to work, ignoring the market limits, under the wishful impression that they are better than those who know the market inside-out as well as the business. And the result? It is a small market, not large enough to keep everyone going. So, prices are coming down, rents are coming down, businesses are closing, people give up and move on to greener pastures, yet they can’t even sell up before leaving… Oh, how wrong you all are! There is no short cut to wealth and deception is short lived. Forget trying to make the “quick buck” and the easy life; stick to what you know, do it properly and, if you need to work for a company, do so conscientiously, earn your trust as well as your crust. It is the only way forward. I have lived through the previous recession here on the Costa; it was really bad and for very
similar reasons. Sheer hard, honest work was the answer. We have a better chance now with the greater number of available working population, if only taxation was less of a disincentive, banks were made to reduce their excessive greed and there were more effective controls as well as more discouraging punishment for fraudsters and drug trafficking. We need to encourage the return of foreign residents, the many more there are the greater will be the need for housing, food, entertainment, education, leisure, clothes and the rest. And… the more money the government will make even with a reduced level of taxation. Let’s be positive there is enough to go round to satisfy everyone but let us not be all estate agents, or publishers, or restaurants just because some seem to be making a living from it. Keep an eye on the size of your market, be imaginative, provide your own ideas create your own market demand. One successful restaurateur was telling me how angry he is because someone copied his entire menu, restaurant décor and layout duplicating everything 100%. A sure way to get a speedier and even more efficient treatment is to skip the free service and go private, unfortunately the cost of private treatment can be substantially more than one 16

rECIPE
Devil’s Food Cake Preparation method 1. Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4. Line the bottoms of two 20cm/8in sandwich tins with baking parchment and butter the sides, then put the cocoa and the dark muscovado sugar into a large bowl and pour in the boiling water. Whisk to mix and set aside. 2. Cream the butter and caster sugar together in a separate bowl, beating well until pale and fluffy. Stir in the flour, baking powder and bicarb. of soda together and set aside.

50g/2oz best-quality cocoa powder sifted 100g/4oz dark muscovado sugar 250ml/8fl oz boiling water 125g/4½oz soft unsalted butter plus some for greasing 150g/5oz caster sugar 225g/8oz plain flour ½ tsp baking powder & ½ tsp bicarbonate of soda 2 tsp vanilla extract 2 free-range eggs

125ml/4fl oz water - 30g/1oz dark muscovado sugar - 75g/6oz unsalted butter cubed - 300g/10oz best-quality dark chocolate finely chopped

3. Dribble the vanilla extract into the creamed butter and sugar mixing all the while then crack in 1 egg, followed by a scoop of the flour mixture, then the 2nd egg. Keep mixing after each addition while adding the rest of the flour mixture little by little, finally mix and fold in the cocoa mixture, scraping the bowl well with a spatula. 4. Divide the chocolate & batter between the two prepared tins and put in the oven for about 30 minutes. Cool on rack for 5-10 minutes, then turn the cakes out and set aside to cool. 5. Melt the water, muscovado sugar and butter over a low heat, when it begins to bubble, take off the heat and add the chopped chocolate, swirling the pan and leave for a minute to melt. Once melted, whisk until smooth and glossy. 6. Set the frosting aside for about one hour, whisking now and again until the cakes will be cooled, and ready for the frosting. 7. Set one of the cooled cakes, with its top side facing downwards, onto a cake stand or plate, and spread with about one-third of the frosting. Top that with the second cake spread the remaining frosting over the top and sides.

Chinese Open Buffet – Estepona Self service open buffet Chinese restaurants seem to have started a new trend here on the Costa del Sol. I am not sure about other parts of the globe, but I have certainly seen them in New York, when I visited recently. It stands to reason that the concept is appealing to diners when they are not restricted to a menu. There is no waiting and you can help yourself to a very wide variety of dishes including Sushi without restriction and at a fixed price. You can also help yourself to a good selection of fresh uncooked meats, fish, sea food and vegetables that can be stir fried for you by the chef on the spot. I have visited several such restaurants from Los Barrios to Marbella, but the one I liked best is without a doubt the Golden Wok. The ambience and decor are modern and up market by comparison, yet at the same price as any of the others. I also found that the service was excellent even for a self serve restaurant. I rather liked the presentation of the food in their white ceramic dishes: clean, fresh and rather appealing. The fact that you can enjoy your meal on the covered terrace by the swimming pool is an appealing added bonus. I love Chinese food and I recommend the Golden Wok; try it, you will not be disappointed 28

You can also peel and seed them and make a fruit smoothie, or put them in a salad.

It’s hard work putting people down with a glance or a comment or both; anyway as I was saying, they are hardly going to try to insult you by calling you a superior being. Are they? Do I wish to have more friends? Hmm, not exactly! I could easily acquire them if

Then proceed to add their friends as well so I could also be considered for entry to this not so exclusive club; or I could gain entry if I were an alcoholic or ex alcoholic, or a certain kind of woman of a certain age who likes to hang around ports and karaoke bars even when the normal people have had a pleasant evening and gone home while back stabbing and gossiping behind said friends’ backs. On the other hand I could, even in this day and age, take in clothes to wash and iron so as to have friends and everybody could look down on me as I’d pose no threat, or so they might think. Social media is here Sure, but let’s not confuse this with marketing or interactivity with consumers. Of course I am all for Facebook and Twitter and the suchlike, but I believe it is important to maintain a professional business image and not be taken for a peddler or Dell Boy using such means only to avoid paying for advertising and even legitimate taxation at the expense of those who do. Some advertising agents go as far as offering to maintain and update your social page, though I do not think what good that does when your announcement will only last a few hours, sometimes even minutes, before it is pushed all the way down out of sight by all the others. And if you keep sharing the same announcement you make a nuisance of yourself.
Telling your circle of friends and family about your business is only a very small part of what is intended by marketing, there is a big difference between advertising and promoting a business in the market and pushing the information to friends, family and anyone else on social media. Interactivity is when a business interacts with the consumers. 56

Some intermediaries offer to make comparisons online for different products, with the idea to save you time in searching and money in finding the cheapest provider. These are certainly not social media. Many advertise quite heavily especially on television, but has it ever occurred to you where does all that massive advertising investment come from to offer you such a service free of charge? You of course!! They are agents; Insurance Agents, Car Sales Agents, Travel Agents and so on. The minute you decide to buy something, your purchase price pays them a commission which in turn pays for their profit and for advertising their own business. Quite frankly, if it is money I

Regrettably some advertising agencies are aiding such intermediaries to acquire a certain status they do not deserve. Take Tripadvisor as a classic example. Tripadvfisor is not a social medium; it is a Travel Agency for flights, hotels, accommodation earning its money through the bookings made through them and now also trying to extend its potential earning services from restaurants and other possible services. They are entering the restaurant sphere by pretending to be a social medium contributed to by the consumers themselves. Damn it, it is clear that they do not bother to provide a professionally researched service for genuine users and rely entirely on unprofessional opinions and views expressed by users, a system that is abused by restaurants themselves paying others to say how good they are or paying others to say how bad a competitor might be. Some consumers are known to use the threat of a bad review in order not to pay their bills or get a reduction. The reviews are certainly not all unbiased and the proof lies in the number of
serious complaints and court cases against Tripadvisor worldwide. How else would you explain some opinions about the famous Ritz Hotel in London: 43 said it was average, 31 said it was poor and 22 said it was terrible. Contrary to what some advertising agencies may tell their clients, Tripoadvisor is most certainly not a reliable source of information, even assuming there are genuine reviews by consumers, they could not be reliably provided by unbiased trade professionals. On the other hand, trying to contact Tripadvisor to inform them of an incorrect piece of information, like “the restaurant is not closed”, or a defamatory comment on their website is quite impossible, not even by phone. Clearly not a social media!! They could not careless. The next time an advertising agency tries to sell you their marketing services on Soicial Media, especially Tripadviosor, your answer should be “Bollocks”. www.webexpressguide.com

Hasta entonces había escuchado la palabra en alguna que otra ocasión, pero no sabía realmente cuál era el trabajo realizaba un “coach”, ni para qué podía aplicarse esta disciplina que ahora está tan de moda, pero que realmente lleva años utilizándose con buenos resultados en grandes empresas. Después de conocer personalmente a varios coach y de disfrutar durante un fin de semana de todas las actividades que se realizan en este tipo de cursos me pareció una disciplina tremendamente interesante y que debería enseñarse desde los primeros años de vida. Porque al fin y al cabo, se trata de técnicas de motivación. De dar a la persona las herramientas necesarias para poder sacarnos el máximo partido. Gracias al coaching podemos optimizar nuestro rendimiento con 60

logros concretos. Ese, es uno de los pilares fundamentales del desarrollo personal y la autoestima. Y lo cierto, es que después de un fin de semana de trabajo, es imposible no salir con ganas de comerte el mundo. Pero como todo, no es suficiente con asistir a un curso o leerse un libro para triunfar. Para poder empezar a notar resultados exitosos en nuestra vida personal o profesional, necesitamos trabajo, compromiso y constancia. Porque, aunque cualquiera puede aprender, no todos estamos dispuestos a esforzarnos para conseguirlo. Pero, ¿qué es esto del coaching? El coaching es una disciplina que está desarrollándose en Europa y en España en los últimos años y que procede de los Estados Unidos. Consiste en una relación profesional continuada que ayuda
a que obtengamos resultados en la vida, profesión, empresa o negocios de las personas. Mediante este proceso, las personas podemos profundizar en nuestro propio conocimiento, aumentar el rendimiento y mejorar la calidad de vida. Uno de los ámbitos de trabajo en el coaching personal es la gestión del tiempo, de los conflictos, de los hábitos, la gestión del estrés y de las emociones. Algo que es muy útil en nuestro día a día. Y es que quién no ha dicho alguna vez ¿Me faltan horas en el día?, o ¿no tenía que haber dicho eso? Situaciones a las que nos enfrentamos de forma cotidiana y que gracias al coaching podemos ser capaces de controlar. Esta disciplina tiene el objetivo de que la persona progrese de forma rápida y eficaz y alcance una autonomía en la resolución de los problemas importantes y cotidianos. Nos permite que la persona aligere el peso de la vida personal y profesional con un estilo de vida más confortable en todos los aspectos en el menor tiempo posible. Y es que ¿quién no quiere tener una vida más cómoda? ¿Un mejor sueldo, unos mejores resultados, una mejor relación con tu pareja, hijos o familiares? Pero, ¿Por qué el Coaching es tan eficaz? Esta disciplina consigue que las personas tomemos consciencia de qué es lo que queremos conseguir en la vida. Muchas veces actuamos por inercia. Estamos tan preocupados en sobrevivir que no nos
paramos a plantearnos si donde estamos o donde nos lleva lo que estamos haciendo nos hace felices. ¿Por qué conformarnos con algo que no nos satisface? Pero para conseguir llegar a donde realmente queremos debemos asumir responsabilidad. Gracias al coaching podemos determinar y aclarar la responsabilidad que uno mismo tiene de sus circunstancias. Comprender que somos capaces de cambiar cómo enfrentarnos a la vida da el valor y la confianza suficiente para saber que se puede conseguir. Eso hace que desarrollemos la confianza en nosotros mismo. Esa confianza proporciona la voluntad, seguridad y perseverancia necesarias para conseguir el objetivo. Con todos estos argumentos, y sobre todo después de ser testigo de un fin de semana de aprendizaje, del que salí sintiendo que realmente es posible vivir la vida que uno quiere, estoy completamente a favor de generalizar esta disciplina. Porque lograr ese objetivo, convierte a la gente en personas felices. Y las personas felices son mejores personas, más eficaces en su trabajo y además viven mejor. www.webexpressguide.com

The Academy students, staff and guests celebrated with a BBQ, sangria, drinks, and a wonderful and exquisite 20th anniversary celebration cake made by the local Monda bakers.
The 1st August 2008 Marbella Design Academy was relocated to its new state recognised premises and university campus in Monda 15km from Marbella, to allow for natural progress and on the back of continued success. The beautiful building was purposely designed by the Danish founder, Helle Byrn
and built to accommodate every design education facility imaginable reflecting a modern day “state-of-the-art� international design school.

Pedestrians!
They need to be severely educated. Let’s start from the basics. Roads are built for cars to drive on and pavements for pedestrians to walk on in safely. It is a crime to drive cars on pavements why do pedestrians think they have priority on roads?
At some point pedestrians and cars need to cross over each other’s paths so traffic lights were created for the purpose as well as zebra crossings. Caution and common sense must prevail in respect of the latter, and pedestrians are more vulnerable therefore they should exercise more caution than they do. There is nothing more annoying and dangerous than a pedestrian racing a car to a crossing, and even starting to cross to 64

Some countries like the UK have embarked on expensive campaigns to educate pedestrians to crossing roads safely and not just on zebra crossings. It enrages me when I am given a dirty look by pedestrians who force their importance on crossing the road even when there is no crossing. Should they be required to take a test and be licensed to walk in the street? Vehicles drive on wheels and cannot stop dead; it could injure its passenger in so doing. Motorists are required by law to stop for a pedestrian waiting at a pedestrian crossing only if he indicates his intention to cross; they certainly do not carry a crystal ball and cannot read the mind of pedestrians around. Having said this, and if you are a pedestrian, it’s never safe to assume that you have the right of way as a pedestrian crossing in Spain, particularly in villages and cities, where motorists are very reluctant to stop, possibly because there are far more crossings created than are necessary causing severe impatience with drivers as well as traffic jams. But that is another story.
