PUBLISHER’S NOTE I think I was one of the very first to introduce desk top computers in a business back then when the Amstrad first came out; I bought 6 of them and I always did my best to understand and maximise their business function. In my usual tradition, our website has now been brought up to date with all the changes required to be compatible with mobile phones and tablets and I believe with any size screen. These amendments have resulted in a change of appearance which I quite like because it looks fresher and even easier to navigate. Over the coming holidays I shall be taking a closer look at the smaller details that might improve it even further. One thing is certain, Web Express Guide is even more Google friendly than ever before and all our advertisers can reap the benefit of this. We are the only internet portal (website) of the Costa del Sol which is also printed, we were the first ever media anywhere with a website and a printed magazine, everyone else just followed; what is most important for advertisers and users to note is that Web Express Guide is an international media for an international Costa and very different from conventional magazines and newspapers with a website as afterthought.

editor page The heavy rain has certainly disrupted the Costa’s routine; the water reached our door but though no damage was caused one of our vehicles was out of action for a week; a slight disruption but nothing in comparison to the floods in Malaga, Algeciras and Gibraltar. We are now looking forward to Christmas and the coming holidays to re-energise for the next year.

Did you know that..? A recluse believed to be Britain’s most obese person has died of suspected heart failure, aged 22. The body of Liam Johnston of Livingstone, West Lothian, who weighed 419kg (66st), was carried out on a bed frame after firefighters removed his front door to make room. Daily Express Are Britain’s clowns dying out? Clowns International, the country’s sole organisation representing the performers, has seen its membership drop from almost 1,000 in the 1980s to little over 100. The average age of members is rising, as fewer young people join the ranks. A growing number of people find clowns sinister, it is believed. Daily Mail 35% of Britons never do any exercise – less than the European average of 42%. Sweden tops the list, with just 9% doing no exercise; Bulgaria, with 78%, is at the bottom. However, 39% of Britons give up their time to coach others – behind Ireland (44%). Daily Telegraph There are 2,170 billionaires around the world with a combined worth of £3.88trillion, which is double the figure from five years ago. London is the #1 destination in Europe, with 67 billionaires buying their main home in the capital. Paris boasts 25 billionaires while tax haven Geneva has 18. Out of 145 samples, 43 were mis-described and 25 were beef. Which? Magazine, meanwhile, tested 30 takeaways in Birmingham and found 16 had no lamb. Parish newspapers. So where do you think your business fits in? Which type do you belong to? If you are looking for quality clients you have to be seen with quality advertisers. Quality product and qualified professional services simply do not fit in with certain other advertisers, it can cause your business more harm than good. Are you lowering your prices to fit in? Don’t be blinded by the high print runs, the response may be doubtful as they will not reach your targeted consumer, not just because of the excessive amount of wastage but also consider the well known short life of newspapers. What are the chances of a client from the back of beyond to come to you and afford to buy your product? Newspapers are read mainly by readers of the language they are written in, it is a fact. And they are expensive to advertise in four to five times each month. Horses for courses! To target a quality consumer you should not lower your image alongside advertisers selling second hand “bits & bobs”. If you do not protect your image how do you expect to sell your more expensive quality goods or services? By lowering your prices? By cutting your quality? Is this your answer? Remember you want to sell at the right price to the right consumers. Don´t drag yourself down to cheaper markets, they are never cheap enough anyway. To reach your target client know your market identify your clients according to your product and prices.

Of course one alternative is to advertise in glossy, table-top monthly magazines..

HOW CHEAP CAN YOU GET? Who’s kidding whom?

I can go to a D&G shop and buy an original handbag costing anything from €595 to €1250 or I can go to Puerto de la Duquesa to be approached by a peddler while eating at a restaurant offering a lookalike copy for €20 which I can actually buy for €10. As a matter of fact you can find a whole load of peddlers blatantly displaying their imitation bags, watches, shirts and much else. This is done at the expense of the shops that try to make an honest living by selling the correct products. If I went about wearing a fake Ralph Lauren “T” shirt am I kidding myself or others into thinking that I can afford luxury goods? Now, this is an interesting question!

For sure I am kidding myself because I can´t tell the difference and because I know it is a fake, however those who can afford to and do buy the originals certainly can tell the

difference. This means that the only ones fooled alongside myself are those, like me, who cannot afford to buy the real thing and cannot tell the difference. Do I really want to impress them? Does it satisfy my ego? At the other end of the scale, original brands are created to feed the ego of those who in their minds can afford to make themselves envied by everyone else. What is the difference between a Fiat and a Rolls Royce? After all are they not both cars? Are we about to see counterfeit Rollers? I heard you can in China, and loads more. Counterfeit is illegal because we all know that it is wrong to copy what others do, it is plain stealing, unfortunately it goes beyond this when it is done at the expense of a high earning industry that produces foreign income in its respective countries, often creating employment even in the Far East where some products and designs are actually 14

made following strict quality procedures. Furthermore I suspect that the income derived from the sale of counterfeit goods benefits the country where they are produced because that is where the proceeds are probably sent to. When identified, any counterfeit products are usually confiscated by the police and destroyed, however it seems rather obvious that the small peddler cannot afford to buy or import the merchandise he tries to sell, someone must be making it, or importing it into Europe and providing it to peddlers and even retail shops. Whether the presence of such outlets is legal or not is another matter. It is the source that should be

identified and put out of action. Counterfeiting is not limited to consumer goods; it does extend to money, bonds, documents, works of art, DVDs … I would like to know what this recent love affair with China is all about because most counterfeit goods are produced and manufactured in China, making it the counterfeit capital of the world. In fact, the counterfeiting industry accounts for 8% of China’s GDP. Joining China are North Korea and Taiwan. As a matter of fact, some counterfeits are produced in the same factory that produces the original, authentic product using inferior materials. Raids carried out in New York City resulted in the seizure of an estimated $200 Million in counterfeit apparel, bearing the logos of brands such as “The North Face,” “Polo,” “Izod Lacoste,” “Rocawear,” “Seven for all Mankind,” and “Fubu.” The crackdown on counterfeit imports must have made it easier to identify and capture those responsible. A word of warning; be wary of where you buy your next sun tan lotion from. Unfortunately when it comes to counterfeit products that you apply to the body or ingest, you need to be extremely careful.

“Warning on fake make-up tainted by CYANIDE and other dangerous chemicals: Counterfeit versions of leading brands are being cooked up by criminals in squalid underground labs Dangerous levels of lead, mercury and cyanide found in the fake make-up Bogus MAC, Benefit and Urban Decay products sold via eBay and Amazon Buyers risk severe allergic reactions as well as long-term health problems Officers suspended 5,500 sites for selling fake goods in past 18 months Counterfeit versions of leading brands such as MAC, Benefit and Urban Decay have been found with dangerous levels of lead, mercury and even cyanide.

Criminal gangs are using squalid underground laboratories to make huge quantities of the bogus cosmetics, which are then sold through websites including eBay and Amazon.” As I said, counterfeiting and copying is stealing therefore “stop thief ”! You do not have to buy counterfeit and help the criminals. Do you?

The term “hyperbaric” is derived from Greek roots: “hyper-” meaning above normal & “baros” meaning weight.

The first hyperbaric chamber was created in 1662 by British physician Henshaw, he named it a domicilium, and clinical use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy started in the mid 1800s. However it is the military for bellic purposes that in the 1930 have started testing and developing hyperbaric oxygen. With some 30 years of testing it was then discovered that hyperbaric oxygen treatment is applicable to a variety of other ailments and applications. The studies of this therapy continue today to improve it and find more and more uses for it as Hyperbaric Medicine.

At sea level a person is being exposed to normal atmospheric pressure or 1 ATM and breathes approximately 21% oxygen. In a hyperbaric chamber this is increased to 100% oxygen and greater atmospheric pressure. This allows the blood to carry more oxygen and deliver more oxygen to the tissues and organs of the body. In the U.S.A. the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society lists the following indications as approved for hyperbaric oxygen therapy: • • • • •

rECIPE

SALMON EN CROÛTE The Chef at COCOMO says that Wellingtons are very fashionable again, but they don’t have to be expensive or contain beef. A whole salmon en croûte is an amazing Christmas party centrepiece.

Ingredients • • • • • • • • • •

2 medium cucumbers, peeled 4 tbsp Dijon mustard 3 tbsp honey 1 tbsp white wine vinegar 50g fresh dill finely chopped salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 x 380g ready-made puff pastry sheet plain flour, for dusting 1 x 2.8kg salmon skin removed and filleted into 2 pieces 1 free-range egg, beaten, combined with a little milk

Preparation method 1. Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4. Line a large baking tray with baking parchment. 2. Slice the cucumbers lengthways, scrape out the seeds with a teaspoon, and chop into 1cm thick pieces. 3. Place the cucumbers in a mixing bowl 20

with the mustard, honey, vinegar and finely chopped dill. Season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper and set aside.

4. Roll the pastry out to 40cm/16in x 30cm/12in on a lightly floured surface. Lay on the lined baking tray 5. Lay one fillet in the centre of the pastry, pile half of the filling on top and then cover with the second fillet. 6. Brush the edges of the pastry with the mixture of milk and beaten egg. 7. Fold the pastry over the fish, sealing the edges by pressing them together, leaving a gap in the centre, so that you can see inside. 8. Brush the pastry with more beaten egg and milk and bake for 45 minutes. 9. Serve with the remaining cucumber mixture

Discovering

Georgian Cuisine We are delighted to have discovered Tbilisi Georgian CafÊ This style of cuisine, new to most people, is becoming extremely popular. All major cities in Russia have several Georgian restaurants, even Russian restaurants feature Georgian dishes. In New York City alone, five Georgian restaurants have sprung up in the last three years and now this delicious food has reached the Costa del Sol. The cuisine is one of the most important attractions of Georgia and culinary feasts are an integral part of the culture; Georgian food is described as bright, original, exquisite, unique and unforgettable. All types of meat are used, poultry, beef, mutton, pork and the distinctive feature of Georgian cuisine is the abundance of different sauces. One and the same dish can be served with various sauces changing its appearance as well as the taste and the aroma. Of course other culinary elements are present such as fresh vegetables and an abundance of cheese, however all types of spices figure highly in all recipes. Such good food needs to be washed down with as good a wine and Georgia is one of the oldest wine producing regions of this world going back thousands of years. It may may be a pleasant experience to try Georgia’s distinctive orange wine which seems to be gaining worldwide popularity. 22

El Cordero

Restaurante Asador A unique good food experience, in a relaxed and pleasant environment. get the best out of anything cooked in it. The flavour is quite unique. There is a substantial menu and everything, except perhaps the salads and the pastas, is cooked in the oven. Steaks, Chicken, Lamb, Piglet and yes even fish. As a matter of fact the fish is exceptionally good. One of the most important improvements made by the new owners was to build an exact replica of an authentic wood burning oven. The exact shape, construction and materials used are crucial to creating this very special oven in order to obtain the best possible level of cooking and flavours. Kaki or Caqui Another exotic fruit, originally from Japan, now also grown in Spain. Autumn and winter is the season and you will find it in every fruit shop and supermarket, but it is best if you do not try to eat them when they are hard and unripe, they will dry up your mouth. When ripe they are soft and absolutely delicious, the riper the better. They can be peeled or eaten with the skin or cut into quarter and eaten off the skin or with the skin. They will ripen on their own if you leave them for a few days, or even better, you can place the fruit in a saucepan with a small glass of clear alcohol in the centre, vodka for example, place the lid on and leave it to ripen, all of the astringency will disappear. An alternative is to slice the fruit into thin round slices and dry them in the oven or near a log fire, this will also remove the astringent element and they will make a very nice, chewy snack full of vitamins.

Anyone for

coffee?

Statistics show that in Spain over 22,000,000 people drink at least one cup of coffee per day by Sonia Fendley. Director STM NU Nummos Life SL Caffeine is used by millions of people every day to increase wakefulness, alleviate fatigue, and improve concentration and focus. Roughly the amount of caffeine in four cups of brewed coffee is safe for most healthy adults. In fact, a caffeine habit could even reduce risks of cardiovascular disease and type-2 diabetes. Just make sure you take it easy on the milk and sugar. All the same, it’s important to listen to your body. Some people can drink a strong cup of coffee and feel fantastic. Others may drink half a cup and feel jittery and be left with an upset stomach. Consider what feels best for you. If you have stomach ulcers or acid reflux you may want to cut back on your coffee intake because caffeine stimulates acid secretion. If you have an anxiety disorder and get more jittery after

a coffee switch to decaf or skip coffee entirely. All of us are different... After decades of controversy and conflicting evidence, there’s still no consensus on how much caffeine is safe during pregnancy. To err on the side of caution, it is recommended that pregnant women limit their caffeine intake to about one 12-ounce cup of coffee. Other research has shown that newborns whose mother consumed more than 500 mg of caffeine a day had faster heart rates and breathing rates and spent more time awake in the first few days after birth. Although some studies show an association between high caffeine consumption and a slight reduction in the baby’s birth weight, other research has shown no link

HYPERBARIC OXYGEN = QUALITY OF LIFE Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) means placing a patient in a hyperbaric chamber under increased atmospheric pressure so he can breathe 100% oxygen; Under this condition, oxygen becomes a medicament that begins therapeutic treatments on the body. The treatment is particularly recommended for reducing inflammation, generally helping wounds to heal, as well as difficult to heal wounds, like ulcers or diabetic foot. It can prevent the need of amputation. The beneficial effect on post operative recovery, including plastic surgery, is well proven.

It is also recommended for sports injuries, bone fractures, neurological damage, autism, relief from the effects of radiotherapy or burns, and reducing stress and chronic fatigue. It is the greater concentration of oxygen going through the blood that aids the body all-round. The hyperbaric chamber at the Hyperbaric Medical Centre is made of entirely transparent material with room for one person, allowing for direct communication with the medical staff. It is hygienic, comfortable, private and unhurried.

whats news

Spam? Scam? Or both? I have recently received the enclosed email. I have definitely not sent it and I do not know Steve who is obviously trying to contact one of my client offering to get more Tripadvisor clients for free. I am not sure if he has been put up by Tripadvisor or if he calls himself an adviser for Tripadvisor, either way no one does anything for free. I believe that once on the phone he will also try and sell you a website, which may be his

He says “We’ll promote positive reviews about your business; we can respond to your online reviews in a professional manner that sells to future clients, you’ll get a mobile friendly webpage to capture online bookings 24/7” So beware of Steve ex-Costa del Sol now in Tenerife, and so much for the veracity of TripAdvisor reports.

in my opinion

The rich get richer and the poor get poorer. They say that the crisis in Europe is over, but is it? Let’s take Spain as an example, because the problem in one way or another is quite similar all over. ( S.Polinares) The wealth of the one hundred richest Spanish families grew by some 9.2% in the course of the past year, accumulating more than 164,424 Euro millions, equivalent to 15.6% of GDP. In the same period of 13 million people in 2014 had to live at below poverty level with an income of less than 8,000 Euros, equivalent to 700 Euros a month.

48

www.webexpressguide.com

While the wealth of the rich continues growing with little or no effort, the number of poor at the other end of the scale also keeps growing. They say Spain’s economy is growing and that the end of the crisis has been reached, quite true, unfortunately as the economy improves so does the inequality. Some say that the level of taxation in Spain is the cause

of this inequality. There is no denying that the level of tax and even social security contribution needs to be adjusted. As an example, it seems unreasonable that an individual wanting to be self employed should have to contribute some €300 of social security per month before earning a single penny. It is an abnormality that needs correcting and brought to level with

income as there is a number of other tax abnormalities, also in the working of the system, that discourage people from working. Well, why work or work more when it’s taken away by the powers above? With the result that workers are content to limit their income to the level they need to survive. It is human nature and for this reason a strain is placed on social benefits, especially in countries where the reward for not working, single mothers etc. become more attractive than working. Cutting down on government spending to make up for the growing demand on social services and education is a short sighted solution that creates even further inequalities. So how is it possible that the economy keeps improving and unemployment growing? Is it conceivable we are overlooking the amount of immigrants many of which are actually working illegally for little money? Of course the rich employer gets richer when preferring to give work to immigrants at a lower rate and tax free! It is human nature at the other end of the scale. I really do not understand what is happening to the understanding of the laws of nature and more importantly the laws of economics. It makes me wonder about the intellectual level of politicians all over Europe and their level of schooling. We have made such a spectacle of our economy that the number of migrants and refugees entering Europe by sea last October was roughly the same as that for the whole of 2014, according to UNHCR & Reuters, and such numbers are expected to continue.

I cannot deny that many are running away from the atrocities taking place in their countries but let’s not overlook the fact that they cannot resist the temptation of moving into countries that offer labour, however cheap, and social assistance. Naturally those countries that have shown the most of these two, yes, benefits become the greater targets, mainly UK and Germany, but when it comes to it – anywhere in Europe will do. Sure, it is difficult to refuse help to refugees, most of them have lost children and members of their family and their homes because of the atrocities they suffered, but then we must remember what I was told about trying to save a drowning person who can drag you down and drown you through fear & panic. It is all very well to say we must take so many and share them throughout all European countries, but quite frankly this is where we now have to start considering very seriously the impact on Europe as a whole and start reading and learning from some books on economics and human nature. Really, there is no need to be a professor in economics to realize the additional strain on health services, housing, education, social services, integration problems, further lowering of wages through surplus to demand, growing underground economy, resulting in lower tax income (vat, income tax etc.), loss of currency sent abroad (moneygrams). What is most important, that seems to have been also forgotten, is the law of diminishing returns. For example, take a factory with X number of workers to make its product, while all other factors remain the same, as the labour force increases, at some point each additional worker will be producing less and less output than before. That is less returns for the money invested, lower efficiency, www.webexpressguide.com

49

in my opinion

overall lower production and overcrowding. The additional problems also comes with the need to deal with an increased crime rate, the disparity in levels of culture that creates racial extremism, the resentment of the existing population not finding work at any price and the infiltration of terrorists pretending to be refugees; not forgetting that when admitted in the country they will reproduce. Hundreds of pro-Assad militiamen reporting to the Syrian regime are believed to be mixing with asylum seekers. Several thousand refugees and migrants have perished while trying to find safety in Europe so what is the answer? Allowing some 50

www.webexpressguide.com

of them to stay does not solve the problem, it is just a drop in the ocean. In my view I believe it may well be more expedient to accommodate them only temporarily and take whatever steps are necessary to make their own homes safe again and send them all back. I do not have a calculator at hand but I think this may well work out a lot cheaper, more humanitarian and better for all concerned in the long run.

in my opinion

Oh! It is Christmas! How sad! We all know that July and August represent the peak for businesses here on the Costa del Sol, after all the Costa and Southern Spain in general is a very attractive proposition for families of holiday makers from all over the world.

52

that take advantage of the cheaper end of season travel.

To start with it is very accessible and not too far from anywhere, it is in Europe and fairly safe to travel to and stay. The added bonus is the sunshine, the sea, beaches and mountains, lakes, rivers, the cheaper drinks, the Mediterranean diet, and all that goes to make a pleasant holiday, whatever your language.

All traders on the Costas should be happy and start looking forward to Christmas and the New Year, but do they? Hell No! I can understand that some foreign residents who live in Spain may wish to take their own holiday away from the sun. They wait for the schools to close for the winter term and fly away to meet their families, snow, Christmas decorations and will not return until schools start again in January. But is this just their excuse for saying there is nothing to stay on the Costa for?

September is still quite active mainly with couples and others that prefer less heat and then comes October also visited by tourists

There is no excuse for closing down businesses and restaurants until Easter, just so as to benefit from the start of the next

www.webexpressguide.com

season. The real problem is that come October, taxes need to be paid and then this is followed by All Saints Day in November. Not a happy a happy ending to the season but it should not sound like the end of the world. It is the lack of atmosphere and activity that are causing this deplorable anticlimax during winter. Not everyone wants to go back to his country, some of us prefer it here where our home now is and at the same time there are thousands of people from all over Europe getting away for Xmas and New year in search for a different ambiance and even climate. So why does everybody shut down? Of course course you cannot beat the summer crowds but there is no need to turn it into a funeral. It is not Papa Noël and Coca Cola alone that make Xmas it is the shops, the shop windows, the bright lights, the advertisements, the shows, the children’s entertainments. All businesses, including the authorities, are obsessed with promoting the Costas’ beaches, the sun and so on for summer holiday, what about promoting the Costa for winter holidays? What happened to advertising when clients are most needed?

We still have a warm climate by comparison, we are still by the sea, mountains, lakes etc. we are even not too far from snow and ski slopes. Let’s not forget the Mediterranean diet, drinks, restaurants of all kinds and nations. Take Tenerife, of course they always have a fantastic summer season, nevertheless, year after year they have kept on advertising and promoting their winter trade. So much so that Christmas and New Year in Tenerife has become a tradition. We have so much more to offer right here on the Costa if only businesses stopped taking this defeatist attitude and started to create the right inviting atmosphere. Make music, be merry brighten up with lights and windows displays! Most of all tell the world and advertise where the news can be seen by the right people. Invest in creating your 12 months per year business; it was almost there just before the crisis, let’s get it back. Why should people go to Tenerife? Indeed I could also say why they go to Egypt and those places where you may be asking for problems.

www.webexpressguide.com

Genres: Drama The story of the foot soldiers of the early feminist movement, women who were forced underground to pursue a dangerous game of cat and mouse with an increasingly brutal State. These women were not primarily from the genteel educated classes, they were working women who had seen peaceful protest achieve nothing. Radicalized and turning to violence as the only route to change, they were willing to lose everything in their fight for equality – their jobs, their homes, their children and their lives. Maud was one such foot soldier. The story of her fight for dignity is as gripping and visceral as any thriller, it is also heart-breaking and inspirational.

Genres: Drama Based on the NY Times #1 Best Selling Hardcover novel of the same name, the movie Room tells the story of a young boy who is raised within the confines of a small shed. prickly pair

What happened to real Spain? You can’t move for the “Big Screen Sport’s Bars” and even the Spanish bars sell bacon without bristles! Where will it all end?

56

Spain has been for many years the Nº1 “fun in the sun” spot for families, singles (1830), stag & hen parties, etc. In fact since the 70’s, when Sir Freddy Laker (God bless him) opened up the “Hi-De-Hi“ horizons of the great un-washed, although the popularity of Spain as the first choice holiday for Mr and Mrs average does go up and down, like an up and down thing, there is still no denying the track record of a destination, that at the end of the day, does still offer guaranteed sun, reasonable good value and, let’s face it, cheap drink and fags.

pong of coconut after sun and Hawaiian Tropic, is that almost extinct creature, the “went away to find myself ”.

But lurking in the background, like an elusive scent behind the more familiar “in yer face”

So, forty plus!! Yes, forty plus years later, what has happened to these higher mortals?

www.webexpressguide.com

Back in the “swinging 60’s”, when, if you didn’t disappear up some mountain somewhere, you were the odd one out, Spain was great because it is full of mountains without being too far away, needing five years grant money to get there and although you didn’t get to meet the Dalai Lama, no doubt you were too stoned to know that “Jose from Jimena” wasn’t in fact the Dalai Lama.

Well, scratch under the surface of the everyday folk, living and working and leading ordinary lives in Spain, and let’s face it not as windswept and interesting as they would have their green with envy friends back in Blighty believe, and there they still are, as reclusive as a badger with a secret, but still spreading peace, love and bad paintings around like confetti. Now listening to me, you would think that I have some kind of chip on my shoulder in respect of this lentil eating, dog saving, bad art campo dwellers. On the contrary, in fact I think we need more of them! My family and I lived in Spain, the Real Spain that is, over forty years ago, in what was then an unspoilt mountain village, and, although I was a child at the time, I was privileged to have met some of the original “Scooby Doo” types. Now I live on the Coast and, to be frank, I am finding it a bit like Great Yarmouth with palm trees. One English bar, near where I live, even has a group of ladies of genteel disposition who meet to play Bridge and drink lemon tea. Yes, Bridge if you don’t mind! You can’t move for the “Big Screen Sport’s Bars” and even the Spanish bars sell bacon without bristles! Where will it all end? So what happened to the “Free Spirits”? I hate to say it, but they seem to have become respectable, there are a few old timers happily

smoking and drinking themselves slowly to death, and, fair play to them, I am glad to say “not a compromise in sight”. But on the whole, the new crop has wandered a long way from the path of enlightenment. The modern day “Velma” and “Shaggy” come to us hot foot from a killing on their “Right to Buy” council house, bringing a variety of elderly pets with them, two point four scared stiff children and an outdated desire to find and buy a bit of the “Real Spain”. It is a sad fact, however that the “Real Spain” has long gone, “Jose from Jimena” sold it to Taylor Woodrow for more millions than he could fit on his “mulo” and anyway could these modern day drop outs from society really live in the “Eldorado” of the past? Way back then the “finca” on the “campo” consisted of four damp walls, a leaky asbestos roof, no water, no electricity and no toilet facilities, a place that even “Man Friday” would swim to freedom from. So what does all this tell us? Quite simple really, “the Real Spain” has been sold, the Spanish bars have sold out, the finca on the campo is a home from home and the original “free spirits” had necks as hard as jockeys’ b****cks!! So did anyone ever really “find himself ”’ or did they just get lost trying? Adios!! www.webexpressguide.com

QUE ÉS

crowdfunding ?

Call the Crowd!

MOTORING

Beware of cyclists! The need to be educated even more severely than pedestrians.

64

www.webexpressguide.com

Motorist have to pay for maintaining their car, for road taxes, for fuel taxes, for insurance and are obliged to pass a driving test to follow the road traffic rules to the letter. Naturally I resent the arrogance of cyclists who seem to think they own the road and can do as they please. A cyclist can cause serious damage to pedestrians, cars and property yet they are not required to have a driving licence nor insurance, they do not make any contributions to road maintenance, they do not need vehicle inspection certificates yet most of them seem to believe they own the roads.

I find it most annoying when cyclists ride their bicycles on pavements and pedestrian only areas, even at speed. I get most upset when my car is stopped at a pedestrian light for a cyclist to cross it on his bike, there is a €200 fine for doing this..

I wonder what the devil are cyclists doing on the A7 (N340), this is an autovía; they are not allowed to be on it unless they are over 14 years old and only use the hard shoulder if available. Yet they even travel side by side, on the road, forcing vehicle to overtake them often when unsafe to do so.

Let’s be clear, cyclists are required to use cyclists tracks where provided, even in town, and always follow the same rules of conduct as motorists. Mobile phones and headphones are strictly forbidden and so are passengers. Their maximum speed allowed is 45 Kmph Yes of course motorists have to be considered and not endanger cyclists giving them priority and overtaking them safely, but surely this is no excuse for letting them get away with so much abuse. Let’s make them take a test and a driving licence.
