Index What’s news
I don’t know why but it seems this winter is longer than usual. It may be because it has been colder than usual or because this year Easter is in Mid April. Whatever the reason we hope you will find this edition as useful and interesting, one thing is certain the magazines of our previous editions seem to have been collected by readers faster than we could distribute them, which we did more than three times in certain locations. Please remember that you can always get or read a copy online at www.webexpressguide.com. We always welcome any constructive suggestions of improvement from users and readers please tell us at editor@webexpressguide.com

whats news
Did you know that..? Four days a year ‘wasted looking for parking’. Drivers in Britain waste an average of four whole days every year searching for a parking spot, a new survey suggests. The issue seems to be at its worst in London, where the average time taken to find a spot after each journey is eight minutes. The survey of 2,000 adults also found that 59% are frustrated by other drivers who take up two spaces. The Evening Standard Bosses say Brexit is already damaging business. The EU referendum result is already damaging business, according to some of Britain’s biggest companies. Despite a raft of upbeat economic data, a survey of senior executives from more than 100 of the largest 500 companies found 58% felt last year’s vote was already having a negative effect on their business. A mere 11% found the Brexit decision had meant a positive impact. Daily Mail Economy set to slow down, says NIESR. The UK economy will slow down in the next couple of years, according to a report from the National Institute of Economic and Social Research. Although the body has revised up its forecasts for UK growth to 1.7% this year and 1.9% in 2018, both would constitute a slowdown from the growth rate of 2% recorded for 2016, when the UK was the world’s fastest growing developed economy. The Independent
Ukrainian-born Len Blavatnik, owner of Warner Music Group, has topped the Sunday Times Rich List with a £13.17bn fortune. Jumping from fourth last year, Mr Blavatnik is now estimated to be the richest person in the UK – despite being an American citizen. WGM Porsches and Bentleys, which – despite their hefty price tags – are the world’s least reliable cars, according to What Car? magazine’s annual survey. They’re also among the most expensive to fix. Japanese manufacturers dominate the top of the list for reliability chart. Hondas retained their title as the cars least likely to break down. Daily Telegraph Exercise is not the key to tackling the obesity epidemic say scientists, who have accused food companies of implying that physical activity can counteract an unhealthy diet. Writing in the British Journal of Sports Medicine the experts said exercise was beneficial to health but the only way to lose weight was to “eat less”. Daily Express A report by US scientists says one in six species on the planet could become extinct if nothing is done to stop climate change and global temperatures rise by 4C, as currently predicted. Worst-affected will be South America, with amphibians particularly at risk. The report is a meta-analysis of 131 studies. New York Times

Suicide of the
British National Pride... what happened? By Count de la Perrelle
Is our pride gently disappearing into the abyss of complacency? We have and expect all the easy ways available to give us what we want....Cheap air travel, social media for contact and purchasing, just to mention two. We have now a younger and far more internationally minded generation who seem to be more adept and educated than ever before, thanks to access to Universities and higher education. Interestingly though, only about a third are likely to have a firm sense of British national pride. Totally different to the generation who grew up following the Second World War. There has been a study from the British Social Attitudes, who are apparently the most authoritative barometer of public opinion and they analysed responses from the general public to questions on topics relating to patriotism and feelings of connection to the UK from people in mainland Britain in 2003 and 2013.
Overall the general feelings of the public offered a fairly unchanged level of national pride. Interestingly though when they broke down the figures further with deeper analysis, there is a definite move away from strong British patriotism. Apparently 35 per cent of people questioned said they were very proud but another 47 per cent were not so sure and offered a feeling of diluted pride in the Country.
Why is this? In my opinion, during the past five years especially, I have seen, with total dismay and sadness, that the things we used to be proud of in our Country, like the Arts, Education, Health care are now systematically being undermined until they begin to tumble and perhaps totally collapse. We are being told by a ruling elite who seem to be arrogant enough to assume we will just put up with it.
www.webexpressguide.com
11
my opinion
Let us not forget that our Nation has a phenomenal history covering thousands of years to include engineering, inventing building, so much to be proud of. Oh and let’s not forget the Suffragettes, these women proved that they will not be passive doormats to be used and put in their place by the ruling body. They taught us that we are a nation who fights back against iniquities. Unfortunately today the media tends to manipulate the outcome by focusing the blame on groups who are just perceived as outsiders, immigrants and other minorities form other countries. I get really angry and I am saddened at the lack of jobs and the Zero contract scandal which is undermining the security of the general public but I cant abide these things being twisted into hatred of groups that have nothing to do with this issue.
So....with all this in mind is it at all surprising that national pride is waning?
12
www.webexpressguide.com
Our industries which are few and far apart are on the whole sold off or operated by foreign Countries and conglomerates. For example: Steel....sold to the Chinese because of cheaper manufacturing costs. Car industries and Electricity and power all have gone the same way. We have still got the financial sector of which we can be very proud but with the political tide moving in different directions we could see some of the major firms relocating elsewhere. With any decent manufacturing we have left in the UK it is not unfortunately always synonymous with quality. Many of the workers are from foreign lands outside the EU and are often from poor Countries where self pride and Country pride are not necessarily a given. Let’s be honest here... we all know where the fault lies. At the head of the British Government are a selection of Clowns who seem to me to be more interested in feathering their own nest rather than propagating a pride in a better future for the
my opinion
British people and the Country. It is fully understandable that people who want to feel a pride in Britain are fervently disappointed when they see the way the Government has been cutting and cutting from the most vulnerable targets:- The disabled especially and our treasured health service. I am increasingly appalled by the way it is just left to happen....Where are the opposition voices?
Famous British quality I remember the famous British Quality! The pride we had some years ago when we had ‘Made in Britain’ products which we were proud to own. It stood for a quality product. Even though I am an immigrant in my adopted Spain, I still love my country, I am a proud Brit. I am however seeing less to be proud of as I get older unfortunately. I am becoming mournful for what we have let slip away and for what has been stolen by greedy, amoral people who are apparently the ruling so-called elite

School of Russian Ballet Summer Intensive Programme
Summer is the busiest time for dance students. School is out, and long summer days can be dedicated to the pursuit of the favourite vocation, dance. Whilst summer programmes vary both in length and quality, all serve the purpose of advancing little ballerinas’ technique and enhancing their education. The Summer Intensive at the School of Russian Ballet is a prestigious and popular programme, and it brings together students from all over the world. Attracted by the reputation of the teachers, students travel to Spain from as far away as UK, Norway, United States, Egypt, France, Russia, Italy, and Japan. The School of Russian Ballet in Marbella offers the annual comprehensive summer intensive course in July. The course is designed for children aged 5 to 19, with students divided into appropriate groups 14

according to their level. Classes include ballet technique, Pointe and variations, contemporary dance, stretching and strengthening, character dance, and repertory for the younger students. Students are also introduced to seminal works of ballet and contemporary repertoire and are lectured on basic facts of dance history. The course culminates with the studio demonstration of the students’ achievements and a celebration. Café Pavlova, located in the same courtyard as the studios, provides healthy and nutritious meals for the students during lunchtime

RECIPE
The Chef at KOKOMO recommends a
Lemon Pavlova INGREDIENTS
METHOD
FOR THE MERINGUE
1. Preheat the oven to 160C/325F/Gas 3. Lay a piece of baking paper on a baking tray and draw a 25cm/10in circle on it. 2. Whisk the egg whites on the fastest speed mixer until stiff then gradually add generous teaspoons of sugar until the mixture is stiff and shiny and stands in peaks. 3. Blend the vinegar and corn flour together until smooth and stir this into the meringue mixture. 4. Spread half the mixture onto the paper. Fill a piping bag with a rose nozzle with the rest of the mixture. Carefully pipe about 10 separate little nests positioned equally around the edge of the circle. 5. Slide into the middle of the oven and bake for 1½-2 hours at 150C/300F/Gas 2, or until it easily comes off the paper. The Pavlova will be a pale creamy colour rather than white, leave in the oven until cold. 6. For the lemon curd filling, place a heatproof bowl over a pan of hot water, simmering gently. Add the egg yolks, sugar and lemon juice and whisk. Add the butter, whisking continually until it starts to thicken. It will firm up further once cooled. Whisk the double cream then swirl it through the cooled lemon curd. 7. Spoon the lemon curd and cream mixture into the middle of the Pavlova and spread over the base of the meringue nest. Spoon a lemon filling into each of the mini nests. Decorate by placing three chocolate mini-eggs in each of the 10 mini-nests around the edge of the dessert. 8. Put 100ml/3½fl oz water and the caster sugar in a pan. Bring to the boil, stirring. Add the zest and boil for 2-3 minutes, or until syrupy. Drain on parchment paper, roll in extra caster sugar and leave to dry in a warm place for a couple of hours, or overnight. Place a delicate mound of candied zest in the middle of the Pavlova, and serve.
6 organic Egg Whites 350g/12oz caster sugar 2 tsp white wine vinegar 2 level tsp corn flour FOR THE LEMON CURD FILLING • 6 free-range egg yolks • 350g/12oz caster sugar • 4 lemons, juice only • 225g/8oz butter • 450ml/¾pint double cream FOR THE CANDIED LEMON ZEST • 125g/4oz caster sugar, plus extra for coating the zest • 3 lemons, zest only TO SERVE • 30 chocolate mini-eggs

Each year, more than 1.200.000 people are diagnosed with lung cancer worldwide (30.000 in Spain) and 70% of these cases are diagnosed at advanced stages, when the cancer is unlikely to be cured. Cigarette smoking is the number one risk factor for lung cancer as 80% of the cases are linked to smoking. The risk of lung cancer increases according to the number of packs of cigarettes smoked per year as well as the duration of exposure to tobacco smoke.
How to Prevent Lung Cancer? To this date, quitting smoking is the best way to reduce mortality, which is why medical advice, nicotine replacement therapy and anti-smoking advertising campaigns are so important. Late diagnosis of cancer is caused by a lack of symptoms 32
www.webexpressguide.com
in earlier stages. For this reason, developing population-screening tools can help diagnose the disease in its early stages. Prospective trials of lung cancer screening using chest radiography or sputum cytology have yielded negative results and are therefore not recommended methods at this time. The National Lung Screening Trial (NLST) was conducted on 53.454 patients aged 5574, who smoked 30 packs/year or had quit smoking less than 15 years prior. The results were published in 2011.
Participants who underwent low-dose computed tomographic screening had 20% lower risk of death than those who only underwent chest radiography. Therefore, lung cancer screening can reduce mortality in high-risk patients. The greatest risk is obtaining false-positive results, which could lead to unnecessary biopsies, but a PET scan could confirm the results without having to resort to the biopsy. At HC Marbella we use automatic exposure control systems for dose reduction in chest computed tomography (Siemens CARE Dose4D™), which reduce the side effects of radiation. Not all patients need the same dosage to obtain optimal images for analysis. Therefore, we make sure that no patient receives a higher radiation dose than is strictly necessary
Patients at high risk for cancer must discuss the pros and cons of the screening with their doctor, who will ultimately be the one to prescribe the test.
How often to undergo screening? CT scans must be performed annually until the patient reaches the age limit or a co morbidity emerges that would impede curative surgical treatment. In addition to screening, we offer quit smoking medication to all active smokers, in order to eliminate the main risk factor. Here at the Pneumology Department of HC Marbella, we recommend you consult your doctor if you have any current lifestyle risk factors.
Who is a good candidate for screening? In the guidelines from the main health organizations such as the American Cancer Society (ACS), the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) and the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN), there is some discrepancy about who would most benefit from low-dose CT scans.
Pneumology Department of HC Marbella www.hcmarbella.com +34 952 908 628
In summary, the ideal candidates are: •
Patients aged 55-80
•
Patients who smoke more than 30 packs/year. You can calculate your cigarette consumption here: http:// www.semergencantabria.org/calc/ cocalc2.htm
•
Patients in good health, with no co morbidities that would require curative surgical operations.

HEALTH & BEAUTY
Preparing for your Skiing Holiday is important Extract taken from BUPA Global health advice provided by Sonia Fendley, director of STM Nummos Life Injuries are common on the slopes, not least because skiing uses completely different muscle groups to other more conventional types of cardiovascular exercises. Some simple preparation leading up to a ski trip as well as doing exercises while on your holiday can help improve your ski performance and help avoid strains and aching joints. Stand in front of the mirror in shorts with feet parallel in a skiing position and check the following
Knees Draw an imaginary dot on the centre of your knee cap and make a vertical line down to the floor. This line should land in a central position between your second and third toe. In most people the line will drop closer to the big toe or even onto the floor between the feet. This means you won’t be able to carve properly on the slopes, in particular the uphill ski will not hold an edge, and it can cause problems with the knee cap joint. 36
www.webexpressguide.com
• •
Move your knees up and out so that they are central. Do 30 reps of the corrected alignment every day, until it becomes your default form.
Pelvis Examine your body from the side. Make sure your bottom is not sticking out too much or tucked in too far. You need to find the position in which your muscles work best, keeping your upper body relaxed. •
• • • •
To find the neutral stance, stick your bottom out and up – this is one extreme of the movement ,then tuck your bottom right under,– this is the other extreme. Your pelvic neutral is half way between these movements. Practice bending your knees into a skiing position maintaining pelvic neutrality – 30 reps every day until it feels natural. Bend your knees into a skiing position, keeping your pelvis neutral, and see where your hips move to. Stand up again and this time as you bend your knees make sure the weight is coming forwards, as if you are going to tip over.
•
You should not have any body weight on the front of your ski boots but by balancing the weight forwards from your core you are ensuring your weight is balanced over the centre of your skis, affording maximum control and ability to turn the skis smoothly.
Quads training is an often neglected element of strength. Doing step downs off a step is a perfect way of working your quads eccentrically. Make sure your alignment is perfect. Start with 30 reps and add weight when it begins to feel easy to do.
Glutes Next, work the lateral hip muscles. There is no sport that relies on external hip rotation as much as skiing, so the importance of training these muscles cannot be underestimated. • •
•
Lie on your side with your hips and knees in a skiing position. Keep your ankles together and your hips steady as you lift your top knee, like a clam opening and closing. You should feel the muscle working in the outside of your buttock. Repeat 30 times. Practice the same movement in a standing position, so you can learn to use those muscles while skiing.
Once you have built up your strength and
fitness, move onto propulsive movements. A good place to begin is jumping sideways on and off a step, starting with a low step and gradually making it higher – this will particularly help on steep narrow slopes where fast movements are essential. Always make sure your alignment is perfect.
Cardiovascular fitness If you are fit you may be able to get away with a lower level of cardiovascular exercises. However, for most of us, interval training is the most efficient form of cardiovascular training. Try cycling or a step machine to work some of the muscles used in skiing. Remember to build up slowly
Flexibility Skiing does not require too much flexibility – except when you fall over. Work on strengthening the calves taking care when stretching out. muscles It’s worth noting that if you experience any form of discomfort or pain during any of the following exercises, stop the exercise and see a physiotherapist for help. Note that comprehensive travel insurance covering skiing trips are available. www.webexpressguide.com

Self-employed Social Security Contribution cost? (For Autonomos)
Self-employed persons, must contribute every month from day one and the amount is not dependent on your revenues but on a theoretical income that you can choose within certain parameters. Autonomos are assumed to have a regular salary as if they were employed. This reference salary, the contribution base wage, will also be taken as a base for calculating the pension and other social assistance (maternity pay, sick days payment…) that the autonomo may need to receive in the future. Therefore choosing the appropriate base wage, and paying accordingly, deserves some thoughts.
Other concepts that can increment your contribution.
1
. Work Accident and Occupational illness cover. In the preceding case, the autonomo would only be covered in a non-work-related illness. If he wanted to be covered under an work-accident, this coverage adds a percentage to the autonomo’s contribution. This is compulsory for the following groups: •
Autonomos performing activities with risk of accident or associated occupational disease. The percentage goes from 1.6% to 6.3% depending on the activity.
In 2017 the contribution base wage is within 893.10€ and 3751.20€.
•
Those who want to receive benefits for unemployment (cessation of activity)
The autonomo’s payment is a percentage of the reference wage.
The minimum contribution including this cover is 271€ per month.
However, there are special reductions for autonomos that register for the first time and meet other requirements. This is an opportunity to build up a business before full payment of the autonomo fee is due.
2
Autonomo’s minimum contribution
Of course, the more you pay, the mote you get. An autonomo who gets off-sick due to a non-work-related illness and pays the minimum contribution would received about 18€ per day out of work between the 4th and the 21st day of the off-sick period, and 22€ per day thereafter. Should he pay the maximum contribution, he would receive 75€ between the 4th and the 21st day, and 93€ thereafter.
44
www.webexpressguide.com
. Cease of Activity (unemployment) This cover adds the right to receive a payment in case of unemployment. (About 620€ per month) However it is not straight forward and there are other requirements to meet (difficult). This benefits requires adding 2.2% of the reference wage to the contribution. The minimum contribution with Cease of Activity is 292€.
3
. Autonomos who act as Directors/ Administrators of limited companies. This type of autonomos have a minimum contribution base wage of 1056.76€ in 2017, leading to a contribution of 318€ with the exception of administrators of limited companies during the first year of activity after incorporation, in which case they can adhere to the standard of 267.04€.

La NASA descubre
7 exoplanetas

I am scared at the thought of my husband’s death. I am glad about your invitation to share and help with our thoughts and fears of death. A few years ago I lost my dad in his early 60’s; he suffered a heart attack quite suddenly and there was nothing anyone could do. I was not that close to my dad yet I did love him and I believe his sudden departure seems to have had an effect on me. I often get this sudden anxiety at the thought of losing my husband who is so much older than me. He is the only person in my life who is there for me, understands me and also the only person I trust, if something happened to him I don’t think I could cope; our 3 kids are now grown up, but I worry about them too because they are so very close to their dad. Can you help me to overcome this horrible, depressing feeling? No, I can’t., but what I CAN do is to share my view based on my field of expertise.
of your sakes. Preparing is NOT accelerating but postponing is a recipe for disaster. If you have done everything you need to take care in the event of his death, then you best need to channel your concern into something more useful. Find some activity that will help you take your mind off that thought. Finding a professional that you trust BEFORE the inevitable is a way of enormously reducing one of the biggest aches at that time…”Can I trust this person?” Knowing and being prepared with what you will need allows you to further reduce the stress factor. A simple thing like an envelope in a well known place with copies of your passports and NIE as well as the emergency telephones will also be of great help. Having these few things in place has in many cases considerably alleviated the recurring thought of one’s partner passing and the ache it will create.
Fear of losing someone you love is a common fear. Mind you, you may be worrying about something that might not happen as you might die before him, irrespective of age. In my job I have seen this happen more often than I care to mention.
On a brighter side, this might be part of the reason why we feel compelled to say “I love you” a lot, there is no point to the fear. Spend time with him, show him you love him, these are actions that will make you feel more connected and able to overcome the anxiety. Such bonds as you describe are unbreakable even after death.
However, let’s not discount the fact that he is much older and that nature takes its course. Fear is good; it’s a sign of things that need attending to. Have you done everything you can now, to protect him? And yourself? Life insurance, end-of-life documents, plans, wills, etc.? If not, take useful action for both
Our bodies stop working, the heart stops beating, the muscles won’t work, and the brain won’t think, but the spirit goes on in our hearts and minds. I pray this may have helped a little. My parking nightmare I believe it could be solved if only the local authorities could see the possible benefit to themselves, to the local businesses and the local residents. Every morning when I leave home, or whenever I want to use the car, firstly I have to try and remember where I parked it. It is quite a nightmare remembering while going round the different streets. Why? Because I am forced to park my car in a different place practically every time I return home. The coming home of course is another nightmare, unless you have a private garage within your building, it is practically impossible to park legally anywhere near your home. This is because during the day the majority of legal parking spaces are occupied by employees working in the businesses in the area as they pounce on every free legal space available; in the evenings the same happens with evening workers such as restaurants, bars and their clients... This is so counterproductive! Apart from the nuisance and the waste of time in both looking for a parking space and then for the car itself, the same problem is met by shoppers and visitors who would like to park their vehicles and spend some money visiting the local businesses. It is of little surprise that some businesses are suffering and some even close down. I cannot think of anyone who wants to go to a decent restaurant and come back to a parking fine. I for one prefer to go where I can park peacefully. It has been said that local authorities restrict the number of parking spaces to subsidise their income with multas, but then there are more intelligent ways 52
www.webexpressguide.com
of making money while solving this horrendous parking problem. I believe that the first thing to do is to force apartment buildings to provide garage space for its residents instead of shop spaces that remain empty due to the lack of business for the lack of parking spaces. And‌ make a separate higher rate charge that the condominium needs to collect from the tenants. Individual properties, such as town houses, that cannot possibly accommodate any garage space, should be allocated residential parking spaces in front of the house. I am certain that these dwellers would be only too pleased to pay for their space, even though they already pay the council for the use of their car on the road. I have seen tourists parking their cars in legal spaces for the duration of their vacation forcing me to park illegally and pay the multa they have caused; they should be made to pay for the privilege of parking their cars. As a matter of fact long staying visitors could be allocated paying spaces for the duration within specified council car parks. Every other space available can then be charged for as the local authorities best see fit and even earn some more money in addition to the multas given against transgressors, which I am sure will still be around, but not at the expense of residents and local businesses. www.webexpressguide.com

Where does
charity begin
Don’t get me wrong, I think that fundraising for charity is a great thing and there are commendable people and organisations truly dedicated to this magnanimous activity. But…
There are many collections for animals’ protection, illness cures and prevention, old age poverty and so on; this is all good. But what is it with all these events that constantly go on up and down the Coast on a regular basis? Can you really call them charities? Not long passes before a singer groups together with anyone at all to bring out a… charity disc! As far as I can see this is more of a self promotion than charity and after more than a year of trying he should give it up. Obviously nobody wants to buy the record and he’ll probably never be a proper singer. Of course we must not ignore the people who organise all these so called charity events. They seem to dedicate their whole life to it. What would they do without charities? Ah! Have we all heard about the master of charity events, Mr Maurice Boland? 58
www.webexpressguide.com
The man who really did give a lot of himself to charities and shows such as the ‘Wow’ factor? What a guy! Well we do know and have read about what happened with him. Every now and then you read about a charity event where hundreds of people turn up to raise about €1000. How sad is this? I am sure that if all those people searched down the back of their sofas for spare change they could have raised a lot more money. Perhaps I could hold a charity event to raise funds for ex charity fund raisers. And here’s another thing. How come all the people sitting outside supermarkets begging for food and money are so fat? It doesn’t make sense. And how come all these great singers I never heard of have never had a hit record? Oh! I know! They’re c..p, that’s why! When a club or a restaurant have a charity event held there and the guests pay, say €30 per person for a 3 courses meal followed by a charity auction to raise money, why don’t the guests just give the €30 to charity instead of having the meal? As I am sure that the said club or restaurant does not give the food for the meal for free. Surely not! They make money out it, right? May be I am wrong and if I am I am sure somebody will put me right. An organised meal for number of persons at a fixed price pays for the meal and the related costs and probably

a profit for the restaurant, surely going without the meal to raise money for starving people would raise a more substantial amount and it would be sort of more appropriate for a charity raising money to help people suffering from hunger. Don’t you think? The funds raised raffling some cheap donated “T” shirts, possibly free advertising material provided by drink or food suppliers, are no longer a charity but a poor excuse to raise funds for other reasons. The of course we have the beggars that approach you for money whilst whinging about their poor, hungry children? Apparently it would seem that being penniless is a great cure for impotence. The moral of the story seems to be that having no food makes you fat and having no money makes you randy, whilst, if you can’t sing, you should bring out countless charity discs. On the other hand if you are raising money for starving children, go to a restaurant have a 3 course meal. I really don’t get it, maybe I am sick, and perhaps I’ll go and see if there is a charity to help me get over it.

In the near future, humanity has mastered holographic and robotic technologies. However, some unknown calamity causes the human civilization to collapse, leading machines to dominate the planet. Many years later, the remaining humans have regressed to primitive tribal societies, with their technologically advanced predecessors vaguely remembered as the “Old Ones”. Despite living at the mercy of the machines, humans have been able to peacefully coexist with them, only having to occasionally hunt machines for parts
