editor page Summer is well and truly over, now we start looking to the end of year festivities as the usual low season kicks in. Our first edition was dated the 1st may 2000 and I am proud to say that we have put 17 low seasons under our belt when other publications have disappeared, some even only after a couple of editions, while others have reduced to bimonthly or quarterly editions under the pretext to reduce prices and increase distribution, which clearly does not make sense. The fact that we have always produced 12 editions every year, I believe, is a high recommendation that makes us a reliable and credible media, most importantly a professional media of the Costa del Sol.

COVER FEATURE

The innovative scenario of the artist and marketing expert Marifé Nuñez By Carla Bordoli

When you enter a contemporary art gallery, you immediately feel the energy impact created by the artists displaying their works of art as well as the personality of the gallery owner. But what if the artist and the owner happen to be the same person with the added qualities of a marketing and advertising expert? I believe the result can be explosive: and this is exactly the impression I perceived when I entered es.Arte Gallery in San Pedro Alcántara (www.esartegallery.com), Marbella, and I met the owner, Marifé Nuñez. A very sensitive, polite and elegant woman, artist herself, and also owner of the marketing Agency es.Arte & Publicidad (www.esartepublicidad.com) The main difference between es.Arte Gallery 8

www.webexpressguide.com

and other galleries in Marbella is precisely in that this project starts with the artist herself after traveling for years, moving works from one place to another, waiting for doors to open, which fortunately they did in New York, Milan, Vienna and Korea. However, as an artist, she always felt that you never have control of what happens and where you move to. When the moment presented itself and she found these beautiful and bright premises in Marbella, she seized the opportunity of a perfect place where she could work and have her atelier. Speaking with Marifé Nuñez, she also explained that when she exhibited in New York, she was able to see how a professional gallery is conducted. So, thanks to her creativity as an artist on the one side and her

COVER FEATURE

experience as a marketing designer on the other, she immediately realized the business potential in having control over the management of her own work and at the same time offering something different to other artists like herself. In her own words, with great enthusiasm, she states: “Normally, the relationship between gallery and artists is generally not so fluid, mainly because the filter is sometimes too rigid, so there are always different levels in this type of relationship. I decided to break away from this and get control of the management of my own career as an artist, and also create a circle of people and other artists looking for the way to be recognized locally, nationally and even internationally in the world of art.” This is also the reason for her wanting a good positioning in internet and also to start selling works of art online, not just for herself but also other artists. Indeed, it is true that she wants to be exclusive in the selection, but for Marifé Nuñez it is fundamental not to follow the rules dictated by the art circuits because she dislikes how those already at the top decide if a person and an artist is valuable or not based just on economic interests. “I want to be able to position artists with talent and not just exhibit(s), therefore not limit my field to people already in a good position. In fact, there are unknown young and talented artists with good potential.” www.webexpressguide.com

9

COVER FEATURE

The gallery’s unique originality is to combine Marifé’s marketing knowledge and experience with the possibility to offer her artists the right tools to position themselves, be it catalogues to promote their works of art and style, consulting services, or all that an artist needs commercially to present his or her works. Surely this is also an added value to the gallery. She finally smiles and concludes the interview by saying: “It is variety that makes the difference as well as my personal professional experience as an artist. I think this is important in the relationship between es.Arte Gallery and the artist.” Just to give a bit of information, the gallery was opened on the 15th of last May and the 10

www.webexpressguide.com

official inauguration took place on the 6th of July when it was attended by many guests and press representatives from the Coast and abroad. At present the gallery is exhibiting the work of Eugenio Pardini (1912-2003) on loan until the 9th of November from the collection of Sean Hepburn, son of the famous actress, who agreed with Marifé Nuñez to bring to Marbella’s art collectors the artist’s colours and style. The smaller pieces, drawings, water colours and other Pardini’s little treasures will still be available at the gallery for collectors. From the 10th to the 30th of November there will be a new exhibition with the collaboration of a Gallery in Vienna (Burn In).

The Chef at KOKOMO says:

rECIPE

Braised feather blade of beef has grown in popularity.

INGREDIENTS • • •

1kg/2lb 2oz feather blade steak, trimmed and cut into 250g/10oz pieces 3 tbsp oil 3 banana shallots or 1 medium onion, sliced

METHOD

• • • • •

2 celery sticks, trimmed, sliced 2 carrots, thickly sliced 2 garlic cloves, crushed 250ml/10fl oz red wine 500ml/17fl oz beef stock

• • • • •

2 tbsp tomato purée 4-5 sprigs fresh thyme 1 bay leaf 1 tsp English mustard sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

1. Preheat the oven to 160C/320F/Gas 3. 2. Season the beef on both sides with salt and lots of freshly ground black pepper. Heat one tablespoon of the oil in a large heavy-based frying pan. Fry the steak pieces over a medium-high heat for 2-3 minutes on each sides, or until browned. Transfer the beef pieces to a casserole dish. (You may need to do this in batches.) 3. Return the frying pan to the hob and reduce the heat. Add the remaining oil and gently fry the shallots, celery and carrots for 6-8 minutes or until golden-brown and softened. Stir in the garlic, cook for a further minute and add the mixture to the casserole. 4. Deglaze the pan with wine and allow to bubble for a few seconds, stirring constantly and pour over the meat and vegetables. Stir the stock and the tomato purée. Strip the thyme leaves from the stalks and scatter into the pan, add the bay leaf and mustard and stir until well combined. Bring to the boil and remove the dish from the heat. 5. Cover the surface of meat and liquid carefully with a piece of greaseproof paper. Place a lid on top and cook in the oven for 3-3½ hours or until the beef is very tender. Skim any fat away from the surface that appears during cooking. 6. Transfer the meat to a plate. Strain the cooking liquor and vegetables through a sieve into a large non-stick frying pan. Press the vegetables with the bottom of a ladle to extract a rich purée and stir into the cooking liquor. Add salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste. 7. Bring the mixture to a simmer for 3-5 minutes, or until the sauce is well reduced, thick and glossy. Add the beef to the liquid and heat through for 3-4 minutes, spooning over the sauce to glaze. Serve with some green vegetables and mashed potatoes. 12

What’s cooking in Benahavís? For a Christmas party or New Year’s Eve celebration? Benahavís enjoys the status of the richest municipality in Andalucía, that’s because its boundaries include La Zagaleta, one of the most exclusive residential communities on the Costa del Sol, however the natural beauty of the location is just as relevant. Mountains, rivers, woods and local fauna all contribute to make Benahavís a well sought after location.

18

www.webexpressguide.com

food hall

Due to its popularity with visitors that come to enjoy the panoramic views and the surrounding closeness to nature, the small town has built a portfolio of some 50 restaurants offering all kinds of gastronomic delights that are predominantly of an Andalusian style, hence it’s acquired the name “the dining room of the Costa del Sol” Walking through the street of Benahavís it’s hard to choose where to eat; you will find a restaurant in every corner, all presenting their menu outside their doors; their impeccably well laid out tables are certainly irresistible just as their cuisine. Despite the variety and selection of wines available with meals, the prices are quite sober. A recent trend has contributed to extend the variety of cuisine available beyond the traditional Andalucian style. The menus are now much more varied and do include French, Italian and other types of cuisine. The type of eateries is now more varied and better distributed between restaurants, bistros and tapas bars.

As a matter of fact there is even a school offering cooking courses and training for waiters, “La Escuela de Hostelería”, naturally, with its own restaurant annexed. Are you thinking of Christmas and New Year? It seems to me that this year Benahavís offers the ideal solution for a quiet “tête a tête”, a family Christmas meal, or indeed even a company yearly celebration.

This month introduce:

Roble - DO Ribera del Duero GRAPES VARIETY: 100% Tempranillo ALCOHOL: 13% Vol. TO THE EYE: Red cherry colour with violet glints. Thick layer. TO THE PALATE: In the mouth it gives a fleshy sensation, slow and with good acidity. It follows with an intense creamy sensation and ripe tannins with a well balanced fruit flavour, especially well rounded. The tannins are sweet on the tooth and long, with hints of roasted light coffee. AGEING: After a malolactic fermentation which is made with the lees, the wine is kept in new French and American oak barrels for at least four months. AROMA: On the nose we get a tingle of forest fruits such as blackberries and blueberries, toasted flavours from the new oak barrels with sweet, spicy notes (black pepper). We also notice clear balsamic hints, resulting in great freshness. SERVING TEMPERATURE: 16-18º C.

THE BEST CONSUMERS’ MARKET ON THE COSTA Is the middle represented by high level consumers who need to know you

To be known on the Costa you need to advertise your message all the time because PEOPLE COME AND PEOPLE GO CONSTANTLY Too many social media pages with announcements of short duration are time consuming for limited exposure.

Unless you can afford to advertise on National Radio and Television Channels your audience is limited to a few locals and only sometimes.

Unless you are as well known as Johnnie Walker or Pepsi Cola driving past large signs on the roads is not the answer.

Too many cheap publications promoting illegal businesses, leaflets and means to save money cannot have the desired effect on the desired market.

PRINTING IS YOUR BEST ANSWER BUT... Newspapers are expensive, they are not designed to target/reach your desired consumer, they do not represent the quality of your business and they mix your business with too many others including competitors.

Quality, expensive looking magazines are a good option but the cost is high and they do not justify the return.

Breast Cancer How the mind can help the body Some 185,000 women in this country realise they have breast cancer. As less than 25% of cases are due to genetic or other known risks, the diagnosis is often distressing. In this article we are looking at the psychological impact and offer some advice that can help to adapt to the condition and help to overcome it.

30

www.webexpressguide.comHC

One of the worst moments for most women is finding out they have cancer, while some suspect a possible diagnosis others refuse to quite believe it and look for a second opinion or insist to retake the tests. What is sad is the mental confusion and emotional numbness on confirmnation of the diagnosis. If you are diagnosed with breast cancer by the team at OncologĂa de HC Marbella International Hospital, we would like to make some suggestions that might ease getting over this phase:

Marbella International Hospital

health

Give yourself time to assimilate the diagnosis.

Ask the doctor all you need to know about the illness and the treatments and take active part with the medics.

Surround yourself with your loved ones and tell them what you feel, it will help you feel better.

Remember that the treatments are every time less toxic and more effective

Also remember that the rates of cancer survival are increasing.

The anguish usually continues even after overcoming the initial shock and these negative emotions can induce habits bad for health which is particularly worrying for the seriously ill. Our Oncology Unit suggests the following to overcome this other phase: •

If you have had to have a mastectomy, ask for a breast reconstruction at the same time and avoid the experience of seeing yourself without breasts. With modern techniques it is now possible to reconstruct breasts with texture and shape very similar to the original. Psychologists and other mental health professionals can be of enormous help. Their main aim is to help women overcome the physical and emotional changes and how to deal with their partners. Flexibility and family unity, with an open communication, will greatly help the whole family to adapt to the

situation, in cases it can even strengthen the bond. After the cure, while some women feel that cancer has been a devastating experience with fear of the return of cancer, others tend to describe it as something that has helped them to appreciate life much more. Our advice to help you overcome this phase is to:: •

Try and concentrate on the present.

Do some physical exercises. It has been proven that the medically prescribed exercises even during chemotherapy and radiotherapy are rather beneficial.

Gradually get back to your usual routine, but not before your physical an mental rehabilitation.

And never forget to cry when sad. The heaviest tear is the one that you do not shed, but remember to be strong.

Do consult us about yourself or another close person. Our specialized oncologists are leaders in Spain and recognized throughout Europe. They work together in multidisciplinary committee groups to offer you a coordinated team, all of them are dedicated to getting the best results.

How to find your partner at a Halloween

party! Imagine going to a party dressed up as Tinker Bell and encountering Peter Pan. You have to at least snap a photo with your other half ... but maybe there’s potential for something more. Or not!

Finding romance on Halloween can be tricky, because costumes can deceive. On a day when dressing in a ludicrous manner becomes the norm, plenty of people jump at the chance to become someone else and play a different character for one night. I recall about 20 years ago at a Halloween party, someone I know came dressed as Pebbles from “The Flintstones and there she spotted someone dressed as another member

of the Stone Age family from Bedrock. He looked just like Fred Flintstone, he had black hair and a husky build and wore an orange top with black dots and black tights. The two thought it was a funny coincidence that they were both dressed as Flintstones, so they decided to go on a date. Singles looking for romance at a Halloween party should put some thought into the

messages their outfits may be sending. What you choose to wear on Halloween may not reflect your true self, but it can still say a lot about you. Experts offered a few tips for how to pick a costume. Consider who you want to attract. For women, wearing a risqué outfit, like a sexy nurse or cheerleader, may send the message you’re on the hunt for a one night stand, which is fine if that’s what you want. A sexy costume will invoke a sexual response. A clever costume is going to invoke a response from people who ‘get it’ and like “it”. Costumes that require a little more thought have a better chance of sparking a conversation. 38

www.webexpressguide.com

Be creative, but not offensive. It is recommended to wear costumes that are timely and with reference to what’s going on in the news or pop culture. But be careful not to be insensitive. For example, it would be a bad idea to dress as anything related to Ebola or the Islamic State militant group. Don’t hide your face. Masks and heavy makeup can make the costume, but they’ll reduce your odds of meeting someone new. Camouflaging your face can make you less approachable and cause any encounters to be fleeting. People might stop to take a picture with you, but they are not likely to stick around to meet the person underneath the mask.

opinion

Dress for your body type. Think about your best assets and find a wardrobe that highlights them. Bell-bottoms are routinely flattering for those with pear or T-shaped bodies. People with square or round body types should opt for clothing with an even, boxy shape throughout. Pull from your wardrobe. Halloween is only one night a year, so there’s no reason to shell out for an expensive costume. Take stock of your wardrobe and play around with different pieces or head for the charity shop. For a 1950s look, women can combine a flowing skirt, collared blouse and pearls with an updo hairstyle; while men can channel Don Draper of the early “Mad Men” seasons by wearing a tailored suit and tie, and hair smoothly combed with gel cream, a fedora hat and briefcase would be nice additions. To flash back to the 1980s, wear anything and everything neon, and layer as much as possible. A couple of clever costume suggestions could be Theresa May with a P45 in her hand or dress up as the ghost of Monarch Airlines. On the other hand you may just want to try and find your other half or even go the party with your partner and the most researched costumes for couples are: • Bonnie and Clyde • Beauty and the Beast • Forrest Gump and Jenny • Lilo and Stitch • Tarzan and Jane www.webexpressguide.com

That’s life

DO YOU REALLY CARE? Show me you do and call me. Even better come over and see me

This month I received a call from someone who is not worried about death as much as she is worried about dying alone. “Years ago, we moved to Spain to retire and lived for many years a happy life together. Unfortunately my husband became ill and passed away last year. Now I am on my own, despite my advanced years I am well and can look after myself perfectly well, but the thought of dying alone in the house does frighten me somewhat. Who will know? Who will find me? What will happen to me? I have no one I know to talk to”. I wonder what is more frightening, the thought of dying alone or the thought of not being discovered to receive a proper burial. I rather think it is probably the thought of seeing oneself out alone with no one to help overcome the trauma because once one is dad nothing earthly really matters any more. This is exactly what I mean about talking. Through talking to someone such fears can be overcome, when you talk to someone you are not alone anymore and at the same time you also help someone else, simply by talking. So come on! Talk to me! It’s good for you and it certainly does me a lot of good to talk to you. As a matter of fact you now have a unique opportunity to come and see me in person at the 50 Plus show on Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd of December at the Hotel IPV Palace & Spa, Fuengirola. You will find me on stand Nº29, help me to help you.

FINANCE

Is a dinner with a potential client a deductible expense? What if you decide to give your employees a seasonal company dinner? Or some Christmas presents like a holiday? (By Limit Consulting) These are some of the types of expenses that fall in the grey area because they present an ideal opportunity for fraudsters to deduct a considerable amount of doubtful expenses. So, what does the law say and what are some measures that will ensure that your legitimate expenses are not contested? Spanish Corporation Tax, allows the deduction of expenses such as the “acquisitions of gifts to clients or suppliers with a limit of 1% the turn-over”. This means that if you have a turn-over of 50,000€ in 2017, your deductible expense as gifts and special attention to clients is 500€. The challenge, however, is proving that the invoice of that sizable dinner is actually related to one of those concepts. It is the responsibility of the company or business to prove that these expenses fall under the above mentioned categories. It is not sufficient simply to present the invoice of the restaurant in order to have the expense offset. Of course, at the time of accounting for the invoices and submitting your results hardly anybody is going to object to that (possibly your accountant will advise you not to do it without proper justification). However, if you ever have to face a tax inspection these will be the first invoices to be disallowed from your books! Remember, that when an expense is removed from your calculation, you do not only have to pay back the difference in the resulting tax 44

www.webexpressguide.com

liability, but you also are going to be fined for cheating the tax-man! There is no particular strategy to follow. However, the idea is to provide as much information as possible along with the invoice to help justify the expense with the resulting sale or service. 1. If you are having a dinner with a potential client, ask the restaurant to note down on the invoice the name of your client. That information, along with the date of the invoice, together with the contract or your invoice to your client will connect the two events. 2. If you are having a dinner with a regular client that you visit periodically in another town, the above-mentioned information will surely be complemented with some travel expenses to that town. 3. Your dinners will always have to be on working days. Likewise, if you decide to give a gift to some of your good clients, make sure that you are able to justify the expense. Perhaps you could attach to the invoice a copy of the official company’s letter (or gift card) that you addressed to the client with the gift. These measures do not guarantee that the tax inspector will not have any doubt but they will increase your likelihood of success in proving your case.

A new survey suggests there is a growing backlash against social media among young people, with almost two-thirds of 5,000 schoolchildren saying they would not mind if the technology had never been invented. That’s Life

Empieza a hacer.

PRICKLY PAIR

Mystic cures on the Costa

The Prickly Pair wish to thank you for your mail, in particular “thank you” to Pete from the campo de Jimena for his interesting suggestion as to what to do with lentils (Ouch!). Should we soak them first? In the unenlightened good old days, if you felt under the weather, you popped along to your doctor and you left with a prescription for some pills that made you feel better. Nowadays it’s all different; your first port of call is the Alternative Practitioner. Now I am not totally cynical and, if there does exist an alternative that hasn’t been previously stuck in some poor Beagles eye, then I would be all for it. But, as with anything that appears to be slightly removed from the norm, it

58

www.webexpressguide.com

will always attract that certain element. You know the ones I mean, yes they are still at it, groping around trying to get on top of the mysteries of the Universe that they are convinced the rest of us are missing. All this nonsense started a little while back, sometime in the eighties, with Feng Shui, when a flock of housewives from adult evening classes would break into your house and re-arrange your furniture. All well and good as long as you are not blind!!

PRICKLY PAIR

Thankfully, that particular form of madness seems to have died a death and the only people lamenting its demise would be gold fish and pea shingle salesmen. However, hot on the heel of Feng Shui, comes Reiki. I am not at all sure what these so called Reiki Masters are up to, but I can’t get out of my head the picture of that big rat in the dressing gown that lived in the sewers with some teenage turtles. The closest I have got to a plain English explanation is, and I quote: -“It is not just Reiki that can bring about positive changes in the way we think and behave, but more about our own beliefs about us. The answer lies within”! Now, I for one could certainly do with some positive changes to my usual behaviour, but I think that maybe ‘Betty Ford’ would make a better job of that than a so called Reiki Master. I am being perhaps a little unfair here, Reiki doesn’t actually claim to be an alternative medicine, and my mentioning it was solely for the sake of a cheap swipe at something that I am sure is very beneficial to a lot of people. It’s a free world after all and, if some sad s**s really believe that “ the answer lies within”, then who am I to try and winkle it out of them. No prisoners, however, should be taken from my next lot; I recently stole a flyer from a window at a coffee shop, advertising an invitation to meet angels. I stole it from the window for two reasons. For one, I didn’t want anybody, who might know me, to see me reading it and, two, I wanted to take it home, so I could p**s myself in the comfort of my own home!

The information gleaned from this flyer seems to be that we are surrounded by angels and, with a little help from the people in the know, we can actually get to meet them and, unlike those shepherds tending their flocks by night, we won’t be scared sh**less by the experience. Oh no! Quite the contrary, our lives will be enriched and rewarded by the whole thing for a small donation of just 50€, even though a “loaves and fish” buffet and a healing crystal are very kindly thrown in. Under normal circumstances, for me, a donation of 50€ conjures up more spirits than I can humanly handle and the only angels I would be seeing are nurses. Joking aside, these people are more worrying than the Reiki rabble, by using the terms “Angels” there is an obvious religious connotation and using religion to prey on people’s gullibility is a bit like playing your Joker. I like to see a fair fight, there are plenty of people out there desperate to believe in something and most of them would worship a golden dog’s t**d, if it was given the right P.R. It all just goes to prove it’s a funny old world we live in, but, I for one, would prefer not to be given a rub down with a bit of glass by an ex hairdresser from Ongar called Steph the next time the Arch Angel Larios has visited me.
