editor page We are nearly half way through the year and, apart from the unpredictable weather, a lot seems to have happened all over the world, unfortunately most of the news everywhere were not pleasant. However now with the coming of the warmer weather, the Costa del Sol begins to notice the number of weddings taking place before it gets too hot to have a reception in a Mediterranean style. Perhaps the most spectacular wedding this year is the royal wedding, everyone else has to be contented with a comparatively modest celebration, but certainly one to remember.

Did you know that..? Grapes overtake apples to become top selling fruit. The increasing popularity of snack packs has seen grapes overtake apples to become Britain's best selling fruit for the first time. A record £604m was spent on grapes in the last 12 months, while just £600m was splashed on apples and £551m on bananas. Metro Empty-nesters ‘resent live-in adult children’. Parents whose adult children return to live in the family home suffer stress and conflict, a new study has found. So-called ‘emptynesters’ showed lowered quality of life when their children lived with them, according to researchers at the London School of Economics. The study analysed data from people aged between 50 and 75 from a total of 17 European countries, not including the UK – but it is thought British data would be similar. Wedding Day

No, not the Royal Wedding, I mean your wedding day, the memorable, important day that will be remembered for evermore. Some arrange to celebrate in faraway places like the Far East, the Middle East or some Pacific Island, but quite frankly you cannot beat a wedding in Andalucia, where it is practical to even expect families and friends to attend and floow on to a terrific reception.

Bearing in mind that Spain is a Catholic country, getting formally married means formalities and as a foreigner either living on these shores or a foreigner coming over for that special occasion there are certain legalities which need to be adhered to.

Andalucia is probably one of the best locations for weddings abroad and if you happen to be a resident in Spain, then it is even better and more practical.

The minimum mandatory age for marriages is 18 and there are 2 types of legal ceremonies, civil and religious. Civil marriages are performed by the Judge in charge of the Civil Registry or by the town’s Mayor. Religious marriages can be of the Catholic, Protestant or Jewish faith but please make sure you register the certificate of marriage with the Spanish civil registry after the wedding in order to get an official marriage certificate.

The idea of an Andalucian wedding can conjure up beautiful thoughts of sunshine, blue skies, beaches with expanses of sparkling blue sea and silvery sand, white villages with traditional, classical looking churches and romance.

OPINION WHAT'S NEWS

There are various documents that will be required and they are as follows: •

Passports.

Original birth certificates.

Marriage application form duly completed.

A form from the civil registry of your home country to prove that both parties are single.

If previously married, the original Absolute Divorce Certificate or Death Certificate of partner.

Residence Certificate. If you are nonresident, a certificate of Affidavit made before your Consular Officer.

If it is a Catholic Church wedding, you will also need your Baptism certificate.

All documents in a foreign language must be translated into Spanish and authenticated by apostille.

8

www.webexpressguide.com

Of course, there are more expedient ways to get hitched Andalucian style. Often couples have the ceremony at home (Registry Office or Church) and then come to Spain either for a church blessing or a celebratory reception. There are some firms of Wedding Planners who can organise absolutely everything for you. They can of course also help to arrange the actual wedding if it is your preference to have the whole thing done in Spain. Alternatively, there is Gibraltar, made famous by John Lennon and Yoko Ono who flew there in a private jet on 20th March 1969, went directly to the British Consulate and were married in a 10-minute ceremony performed by the Registrar. In so doing, you can then follow on with a glorious reception in Spain with all the lovely attributes it has to offer. It is advisable, to book the Registrar several weeks ahead and this can be done by telephone but remember to complete the paperwork in advance as a special license is required for non-residents. With a bit of forethought and planning your wedding day in Andalucia should go without a hitch making it the day everyone remembers.

WHAT'S NEWS

A most sought-after English Restaurant (by E.G.)

There are hundreds of restaurants on the Costa del Sol, some are good and many are not so good. Some are even excellent but rather expensive. What consumers look for in a restaurant is quality food, excellent service and good ambiance at value for money prices. This is why I find that Kokomo is probably a best choice restaurant that can comfortably be recommended for its high standards at sensible prices. The high quality and presentation of food is due to the experience of Simon Taylor-Lane, a known chef who worked

at the Savoy in London and who decided to open his own restaurant on the Costa del Sol. However, quality and presentation are not enough without the taste that Simon packs into his dishes. I can think of no better place for lunch where the menu presents 15 main courses split into 3 price groups of, 5€, 6€, & 7€, with veggie extras and desserts at just 1€, but with a quality and presentation that you would expect to find in Marbella restaurants at 5 times the price. It is ideal for a business

lunch and present your guests with a good image. The evening menu is just as impressive as for example the 14.95€ two course table d’hôte menu with 10 mouthwatering starters. The customer comes first and all meals are presided by Maître D’ Sally and her friendly staff who cannot do enough to please and ensure that all diners are well looked after. The most delightfully surprising finale to every meal at Kokomo is the bill and the exceptional value for money it represents.

RECIPE

The Chef at KOKOMO says

Eton Mess is a must

This has to be the most quintessential English dessert, but an absolute favourite and I can honestly say I don’t think I know anyone who doesn’t like it. It’s a quick easy dessert you can make in less than 10 minutes. A sure winner! INGREDIENTS • • • •

500 ml of Lightly Whipped Cream with a dash of vanilla 400gr mixed fresh red berries (raspberries, strawberries, blue berries, red currents) 50gr icing sugar 250gr Broken Meringue

METHOD 1. Place the whipped cream into a cold bowl and add the icing sugar 2. Mix gently as you don’t want to over work the cream now add the broken meringue and fold on gently 3. In a separate bowl add the berries and a little sugar

14

4. Now crush them only slightly to let the juice come out of the fruit mix it in with the sugar and add the cream and meringue mix 5. Now fold it in gently as to marble the cream mix, spoon into chilled glasses and serve

Grants for home restorations Briefly explained by Matecno S.L. as a general guidance.

Starting this year, more than 18 million homes in Spain can request government aid in order to restore the home and improve the energy efficiency. The Plan de Vivienda 2018-2021 is set to consider the allowance of grants for urban renovation, the saving of energy and improved accessibility. One of the important elements of this is to encourage the younger generation to purchase their own home. With the object to encourage the renovation of urban areas with some feasible criteria, the Ministry of Development have prepared a concrete plan in respect of electric energy. Qualifying buildings need to have been built before 1996 and must be intended for family main residence as well as 2nd residence. An indication of how much can be granted would seem to be about 40% of the renovation cost, increased to 75% for applicants earning less than 3 times the IPREM or if the renovation includes the cost of accessibility (intended for invalid residents of persons over 65).

24

www.webexpressguide.com

Having said this the government has placed a fixed ceiling of 8,000 Euros for apartments and 12,000 Euros for family homes. An extra 1,000 Euros can be available in case of properties of cultural interest. As far as land intended for commercial use is concerned, the ceiling is placed at 10 Euros per m2. The qualifying purpose for eligibility is the improvement of the thermal surrounding of the property such as the installation of heating systems, refrigeration, production of sanitary hot water and ventilation for the thermal conditioning, or the increase of the energy efficiency of existing ones; the fitting of energy generating equipment or those which allow the use of renewable energies; improvements on noise reduction on or the installation of systems that contribute to reducing the interior contamination of the property.

For further, more accurate information and possible eligibility please contact MATECNO S.L. who will be delighted to advise you.

LIVING WITH PAIN AFFECTS THE QUALITY OF LIFE

Dr Thomas Boerger, specialist in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery at HC Marbella, explains knee surgery. performed in Spain every year. The main causes being severe fracture of the joint in road traffic accidents, degenerative disease, causing deterioration of the bone and cartilage in the joint and the development of joint tumours.

Dr Thomas Boerger. Specialist in Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology of HC Marbella Orthopedic surgeon at the Saint Bernard Hospital in Gibraltar The knee is the hardest working joint in the human body, in time, wear and tear can result in arthritis, a degenerative condition which causes discomfort, pain and even deformity of the knee, severely affecting a person’s quality of life. The pain can be treated with injections or analgesia and anti-inflammatory medication, but there comes a time when it becomes unbearable and daily activities such as walking, bending down, climbing stairs or even sleeping cause problems. At this time a knee replacement can be the best option to restore quality of life. Knee replacement surgery is quite a common operation, around 55,000 operations are 30

www.webexpressguide.comHC

With a partial knee replacement the affected part of the knee is replaced and with a total knee replacement all three sections of the knee are replaced. The anterior and posterior “cruciate ligaments are conserved in a partial replacement but are removed in a total knee replacement. In the past, partial knee replacement was only considered in patients over the age of 60 with a sedentary lifestyle, but currently, with new implants and new, improved, surgical techniques, at HC Marbella we are using them in active patients more frequently. A partial prosthesis preserves the range of movement and function of the knee much better in comparison to a total knee prosthesis. For these reasons, patients tend to be more satisfied with a partial knee replacement especially as, if required, they can always undergo a total replacement in the future. If degeneration is severe, there is no alternative but to resort to a total knee replacement.

Marbella International Hospital

HEALTH

At HC Marbella we use the Biomet Corporation, OxfordÂŽ partial prosthesis as it has already provided some excellent results in 95% of cases, lasting 15 years or longer. Often total knee replacement is NOT required following the OxfordÂŽ prosthesis which is so successful that since 2013 its manufacturer, Biomet, has provided a lifetime guarantee with the implant. At HC Marbella we perform a thorough investigation in every case to identify the area of knee pain and the range of movement and stability. Although we will determine if the knee is eligible for a partial knee prosthesis with an X-ray, we can never know with 100% certainty if the patient is a good candidate until surgery has commenced. In the case of patellar or patellofemoral arthritis in young adults and it causes recalcitrant, anterior knee pain which does not respond to conservative measures such as weight loss, physiotherapy or oral/injected medication, surgery should be considered.

It is essential that patients are well informed of the steps involved:

1

.Preparation for surgery: Make sure you know what medication you are taking, you will probably have to stop taking medications which slow down blood clotting such as aspirin, ibuprofen, or naproxen as well as any anticoagulant medication such as warfarin (Sintron) and other similar drugs.

2 3

.Before surgery: one of two types of anaesthetic will be given, general or epidural. An anaesthetist will be present in theatre throughout the operation.

.During surgery: The surgeon will make an incision of approximately 3 to 5 inches (7.5 to 13 cm) in the knee. The damaged tissue and bone will then be removed and the prosthesis will be implanted; once in the correct place it is fixed with bone cement. Finally the wound is closed with sutures or staples.

Total knee replacement has shown to be effective In patients with severe patellofemoral arthritis with great prospects of rehabilitation. However, a partial prosthesis appears to be a better option, as it can be implanted at a younger age without the risk of loosening which can occur with a total prosthesis.

At HC Marbella we take special care to ensure recovery is as speedy as possible to enable knee function to be restored in the shortest possible time. In our experience the majority of people recover quickly and have much less pain than they had prior to surgery. It is possible to move the knee the day after the operation. Our team of physiotherapists work with patients to mobilise the knee whilst in hospital, this continues for 2-4 weeks following discharge 1 to 2 days after surgery.

In knee arthroplasty surgery, we take damaged tissue and bone from the knee joint and replace them with a synthetic implant, called a prosthesis.

High impact exercise or jogging/running must be avoided for a period of time, as the prosthesis includes a support surface which could be damaged.

SPORTS IN THE SPRING Don’t let allergies force you to stay at home People who enjoy practising sport in the open air await anxiously for spring to arrive; however, for many springtime also means allergies. Learn about some tricks to fight them off or at least considerably reduce their effects. Allergies occur when the immune system reacts in an exaggerated way to an external agent that generates a series of inflammatory and other similar responses in our body. There are different types of allergens. The most common are caused by pollens – mainly from trees, grasses and shrubs – and mainly occur during the spring when they usually flower.

Tricks for practising sport with allergies •

Be careful with contact lenses and use your glasses if necessary. Use an elastic band on them so they don’t fall off.

Sunglasses will also help to alleviate any trouble with bright light on delicate eyes. Nasal lenses will help you breathe better.

If your eyes feel itchy, don’t rub them. It’s possible that the allergy is not the only thing to blame since this could be the result of dust or other matter accidentally getting into the eyes. You could damage the cornea which is very painful and this could have negative consequences for your vision.

Using a face mask helps to reduce the amount of pollen inhaled. Choose disposable ones and change them after each training session. Wash all your equipment as soon as you return home so as to get rid of any pollen that might have clung to it.

Where and when to practise sport

32

If you don’t want to give up sports in the open air, the best thing to do is to go out when levels of pollen in the atmosphere are at their lowest. These levels can be consulted online or on specific applications on your smartphone.

Pollen levels escalate at certain times during the day. The concentration is significantly greater between five and ten in the morning and later in the day (from seven in the evening).

Practise sports in an enclosed area such as a gymnasium, an indoor court or a swimming pool. This will help you gain strength and stamina and work muscles that are generally ‘abandoned’.

Keep away from contamination in parks. The combination of pollen and pollution aggravate the effects of allergies.

MY OPINION

Welcome to the Costas in Spain! It is of no surprise that the Costas have become internationally attractive not just by the number of tourists that visit regularly every year but also by the incredible number of foreign nationals who decide to make Spain their home. Foreign visitors and residents have become the back bone that makes the Costas flourish.

customs, habits and yes even laws which can be very different from what one is used to.

Using English as the most used language to communicate between the different nationalities, including Spanish, one must bear in mind that after all it is Spain whose larger population is Spanish with its own

On the other hand one has to be aware of the general every day behaviour and customs that can be disconcerting and even annoying to other nationals. It is probably impossible to tackle every single one of the in one article

The common denominator is very simple to describe, once you get to know the Spanish, they are friendly, easy to communicate with and, helpful, who can be good, loyal and respectful friends.

37

MY OPINION

but understanding some of the most relevant could be useful to make life easier.

Talking Loud One of the most irritating things is not being able to converse with my partner at a restaurant, bar or other public place because of someone having a conversation making sure that everyone around is in on it. Mind you that can also be because they cannot converse quietly on account of so much noise everywhere. It has been stated that Spain is the noisiest country after Japan.

Opening hours & time keeping habits When a coffee shop says it opens for breakfast at 8, I expect to be served at 8 and not have to wait for them to turn up, put the lights on, clean the tables etc. This could well be because workers seem to have their breakfast during working hours, usually at 11 am. Maybe it is their elevenses?

38

www.webexpressguide.com

Siesta time is still widely practised after lunch from 2pm to 5 pm in the afternoon, I find it quite refreshing especially in summer but what is irritating is making an appointment with someone who does not turn up on time or even forgets all together. Time keeping is a serious problem.

Any excuse for a fiesta. Apart from the summer fiestas of every village, which are a social event that cannot be missed, we now find that that Spaniards will also celebrate any custom followed by ex-patriates like for instance Halloween. Even their Xmas usually celebrated with gifts on the 6th of January is now also done on 25th December. Staying up late is part of daily life in Spain even dinner is usually at 10 pm. The night does not end at 2am and work is maĂąana, when we could be late. Some pride themselves of going to work after being up all night.

MY OPINION

They like to be in a crowd The Spaniards are very gregarious and they all go out for a stroll at the same time and usually to the same places. Sometimes with friends, and other times with family, but very rarely alone

Jumping the queue Of course, people will queue, but the annoying part is when someone just walks in in front of you with the excuse they are asking a simple question and end up having a whole conversation being indirectly attended, while you are left standing there fuming.

It’s always someone else’s fault.

Jumping at zebra crossings The sensible thing is to remember to look before crossing to make sure it is safe because cars travel on wheels and cannot stop dead, or might not have seen you due to obstructions. No chance! The Spanish seem to think they have priority over cars no matter what and will jump on the crossing right in front of you. Some serious education is needed here.

Hazard lights are an excuse for anything

Putting used toilet paper in the bin

Drivers will stop and leave their cars anywhere with flashing light on including roundabout, pavements, footpaths, in the middle of a one-way narrow street and even just behind you stopping you from moving from your legal parking place. There is nothing more infuriating than being blocked in, but of course it is all right because their hazard lights where on.

Do not be surprised if you find a bin full of used toilet paper in a public lavatory. Thank goodness it is becoming rarer, however there are still some old buildings about with narrow piping and sceptic tanks where toilets cannot be flushed without blocking the system.

I am sure these peculiarities and many more may require a lot of understanding and in some cases patience, but we are in Spain! So enjoy! It can only get better.

Everyone can make mistakes it is a human thing to do. You will find it difficult to get a Spaniard to admit his mistake, often accusing you of causing it or indeed someone or something else.

Not picking up dog poo Although they say that stepping on a dog’s poo a sign of good luck, I am glad that the local councils have now introduced some hefty fines, to stop this most complained habit.

THAT'S LIFE

“I am not afraid to die. I just don’t want to be there when that happens.” (A quote by Woody Allen) Following last month’s article about not being afraid to die, I had another call from a 70 years old gentleman who amusingly quoted Woody Allen. He then added he had not made any funeral arrangements because he did not see any point in dying. I really had to go back to basics with him. Having explained the advantages that we all know about pre-planning his funeral, I had to convince him that, like everyone else on this earth, he will die however many hypothesis and theories there are regarding this. As far as our existence is concerned, like every living thing on this planet, it is the pure and simple cessation of all the vital metabolic activities in our living system, both clinical and biological, even though responding quickly enough to a clinical death (eg. drowning) can prevent the biological death, when the brain cells die due to deprivation of oxygen and final death occurs.

It is a fact that the sooner one accepts death’s inevitability and stops wondering and speculating about it, the sooner a greater peace of mind will be achieved, especially after making the necessary funeral arrangements. Make the waiting as pleasant as possible for yourself and everyone else around you, while enjoying your trip to the time of passing away. Let me help you with any doubts you might have, it will also help me to understand my job better.

Whether there is life after death or not, whether we come back to a new life after death, no one can say for sure, but one thing that is 100% definite is that the end of physical living will come for everyone.

FINANCE

BEWARE of the NEW MEASURES against tax fraud on rental transactions From 2018, holiday rental online platforms such as HomeAway or Airbnb have to report their users to the Spanish Tax Office. This applies whether they charge the user for the service or not. Their newly acquired obligations are to report and identify the user, report the number of days the property is being rented for as well as the amount charged. Of course, this may not be the only way used to uncover rented properties. Armed with all this information, Hacienda have all they need to prosecute property owners who do not make their tax declaration or differ the information on their tax declaration. Last year, Hacienda warned 21,500 people that it was aware they had rented out a property. If you rent out your property, from now on do not take the risk. Make sure you include every transaction in your tax declaration.

What would you need to report/pay? As owner of a property in Spain you might be in one of the following situations, each one with its corresponding obligations. 1. The property is only available to you and your family. You do not rent it out. In this case you will pay tax for an attributed income based on the property value, similar to a wealth tax.Of course, this does not apply if the property is your main residency. (Obviously, this could not be the case if you are not officially resident in Spain) 2. You keep the property exclusive for rent. Hacienda would expect then that you declare your revenues; quarterly if you are non-resident or annually if you are resident. 3. You use the property for both the above purposes. You would have to meet with the two obligations. In this scenario, the tax payable for option 1 is proportional of the time when the property has been empty (available)

THATS LIFE

PRICKLY PAIR

Summer is approaching, how’s your figure? Is obesity your problem? Thankfully God blessed me with a super figure with curves in the right places and all that, but don’t hate me, I have had my weight problems like everyone else, well may be not as some of you who are obese, inactive, overindulging and generally life threateningly fat. Obesity is quite a large subject, it may even take more than one edition to cover it. On the other hand, one doesn’t really want to be too skinny. You need to find a balance between size ‘0’ and a ‘whopper’, which, according to Burger King, means a lump of meat.

58

www.webexpressguide.com

I think models have naturally arrived at size ‘0’ through evolution in order to scale down their B.M.I. (Body Mass Index) to match the amount of their brain cells they actually use. As a matter of fact, underweight models have been banned by Spain. Well, what do you expect with the strong similarity in pronunciation between ‘Guapa’ and ‘Whopper’ and a Mediterranean diet, it is not easy to find many underweight Spaniards. As a matter of fact, I do believe that such models have been banned by all countries with a Mediterranean diet. So much for that myth!

PRICKLY PAIR

As I said before, just because I have been blessed with a virtually perfect figure, it does not mean to say that I have not found myself having to shift that dreaded couple, of pounds. I can tell you I have found myself still sitting up at 3.30 in the morning, taking out yet another cigarette, not bothering to turn on the lights or the telly, gulping down another glass of water. My hands shaking and the stomach feeling as empty as if my organs had been removed, even my hearing became supersensitive hearing every snoring breath and fart, not just from my partner, but the next door’s neighbours too. I even felt light headed (shame it wasn’t 20 kgs lighter). And that was just with only a couple of pounds to shift! I did not bother weighing myself or joining a slimming club or gym; nobody binges in those places and I don’t like anyone telling me what I can or can’t eat. Anyway, I can’t see another dozen fat women from the slimming club coming round at 3.30 in the morning to give me moral support. Here is a tip. Before starting I wrote down a list of can eats and can’t eats. It was not difficult. The dos was grilled, boiled, greens, fruit, some pasta soups, etc and lots of water. The don’ts was everything I live on; you know, bread, butter, choc, crisps, nuts, and so on.

You see, my sister in law had an overactive thyroid and she was always slim though she was always out of breath, something to do with her heart rate. Well, I am always out of breath and I am sure my heart rate isn’t that good. So, what’s the difference? She seems to have got to be slim into the bargain. I suggested we could have a transplant. She could have my bust and I could have her gland. Imagine how much that would save the NHS! After making the list, it will become obvious why you are fat. Most of your usual food will be in the right-hand column, on the “don’t eat” list. It is not the thyroid problem, nor the slow metabolism, not the huge bones or water retention. It is your mouth all along; you just can’t stop putting fattening stuff in it. The problem is not so much eating what you can’t eat but knowing when to stop. So, remember, ladies, try not to become obsessed while you are dieting, and avoid thinking about food twenty-four hours a day. On the other hand, maybe that is where you’re going wrong; if you spend more time thinking about food and less time doing it, you wouldn’t be so fat in the first place.

You see? I know all about slimming. I think that all fat people do. Don’t bother to go the doctor to have your thyroid gland checked; you already know why you are fat:- you can’t stop pigging out. www.webexpressguide.com

DETROIT: BECOME HUMAN

STATE OF DECAY 2

Detroit: Become Human is an action-adventure game played from a third-person view, which is subject to a set and controllable perspective. There are multiple playable characters in the game who can die as the story continues without them; as a result, there is no "game over" message following a character's death. The story will branch out depending on which choices are made. The player will be able to rewind to certain points in the story to reshape decisions in the event of regret.

State of Decay 2 is a zombie survival game in which gameplay is experienced from a third-person view. The game is set in an open world environment and features cooperative gameplay with up to three other players
