Surprise growth rate in China. China’s economy has recorded a growth rate that surpassed expectations. GDP grew 4.8% in the three months to the end of March compared with the same period last year – faster than the 4% year-on-year increase it registered in the previous quarter and also ahead of the 4.4% growth rate forecast by a Reuters poll of economists. The government has set its 2022 growth target at around 5.5%, the lowest in three decades. CNN

She becomes the first qualifier in the Open era to win a Slam and is elevated to British number one. At the start of the year, this inspirational young woman was ranked number 345 in the world and less than three months ago was sitting her A Levels. Life expectancy lowest for a decade. Life expectancy in England has fallen to its lowest level since 2011. Public Health England (PHE) said excess deaths due to the Covid-19 pandemic caused life expectancy to fall by 1.3 years for men, to 78.7, and 0.9 years for women to 82.7. As well as pointing to the pandemic, PHE said there had been an “unprecedented” rise in deaths caused by alcohol use, up 20% last year compared to 2019. The Independent

Covid lowers life expectancy. A worldwide study has found that the Covid pandemic has caused the biggest decrease in life expectancy in Western Europe since the Second World War. Even bigger declines were seen among males in the US, with a decline of 2.2 years relative to 2019 levels, followed by Lithuanian males (1.7 years). Last week the Office for National Statistics estimated that life expectancy for men in the UK had fallen for the first time in 40 years because of the impact of the pandemic. The Daily Mail
