AI CAN DETECT ALCOHOL IN

An arti cial intelligence algorithm could give better results than current alcohol control devices in pubs and nightclubs

In a study at La Trobe University, in Victoria, Australia, scientists have developed technology that can instantly determine if a person has exceeded the legal limit of breathalyzer just by recording their voice for 12 seconds. This is an audio-based deep learning algorithm to identify alcoholic intoxication (ADLAIA).

According to the team, acute alcohol intoxication impairs cognitive and psychomotor abilities, leading to various public health hazards such as tra c accidents and alcohol-related violence. Intoxicated people are often identi ed by measuring their blood alcohol concentration (breathalyser) with breathalysers, an inaccurate, expensive, and time-consuming process.

A test that simply relied on a person's voice through a microphone could make it easier for law enforcement. In the study, the algorithm was educated on a database of 12,360 audio clips of drunk and sober speakers.

The researchers found that ADLAIA could identify intoxicated speakers (with a BAC equal to or greater than 0.05%) with an accuracy of nearly 70%. The algorithm outperformed, at nearly 76%, in identifying intoxicated speakers with a BAC greater than 0.12%.

The researchers suggest that a possible future application of ADLAIA could be integration into mobile applications and its use in settings such as bars and sports stadiums to obtain instant results on the intoxicated state of individuals.

Being able to identify intoxicated individuals based solely on their speech would be a much cheaper alternative to current systems, where breath-based breathalyser tests in these locations are expensive and often unreliable.

Once its overall performance is improved, ADLAIA could be integrated into mobile applications and used as a preliminary tool to identify people in a state of alcoholic intoxication.

Carnival in Spain

From Thursday, February 16, 2023 - Wednesday, February 22, 2023. Carnival is a very colourful celebration. Each city celebrates carnival in its own way. Carnival usually starts the weekend before Ash Wednesday.

Rio de Janeiro Carnival, Brazil

After being cancelled for the past 2 years, the 2023 celebration will take place from February 17 – February 25 at venues throughout the city and will feature samba music and dancers, famous Samba Parade, and epic parties.

Venice Carnival, Italy

Venice’s famous Carnival celebration has been around since at least 1296 and will take place from February 4 – February 21, 2023. Each year the event hosts a boat parade and light show on the Rio di Cannaregio canal. The 10-day celebration plays host to several masquerade balls where attendees wear period costumes and dawn fancy masks.

Mozzarella in carrozza (mozzarella in a carriage)

A classic Roman appetiser. Its name refers to the melted cheese strings that resemble horse-drawn carriage reigns. It's sinfully delicious.

INGREDIENTS

8 SLICES of white bread, crusts removed

2 L of large eggs

9 OZ. of cow’s milk mozzarella

METHOD

4 TBSP. of all-purpose flour

peanut oil salt

Cut the mozzarella into 4 slices and drain. Spread the slices on paper towels to dry. Place one mozzarella slice on four of the bread slices. Top with the remaining slices and press the sandwich edges so that they stick together well.

Heat the oil in a heavy bottomed frying pan until boiling around 350°F.

Pour 1” cold water into a shallow dish and the flour in another.

Dip the four edges of each sandwich in the flour, holding them tightly closed to prevent opening. Then dip the edges briefly in the cold water; this will form a protective layer to prevent the mozzarella from leaking out while cooking.

Beat the eggs with a pinch of salt. Dip the sandwiches in the egg mixture, one at a time, and let soak for 2 minutes on each side, allowing the bread to absorb a good amount of liquid.

Fry the mozzarella sandwiches until they are golden and crisp, turning often for 5-7 minutes. Drain on paper towels and eat while hot.

Varicose veins, a treatable condition

Varicose veins are the most common manifestation of chronic venous disease in Western countries and are very prevalent in Spain. Varicose veins are present in 25-30% of the female adult population and between 10-40% of the male adult population. The condition causes considerable suffering and use of health care resources, whilst the resulting complications are responsible for 2.5% of time lost at work.

Varicose veins in the lower limbs range from telangiectasias and spider veins to large bulging veins. Symptoms vary, ranging from a cosmetic problem to serious complications such as thrombophlebitis (a clot in the vein), or even skin lesions (ulcers) in 2.5% of cases.

Clinical examination, diagnosis and treatment by an Angiology and Vascular Surgeon is therefore important in the initial stages to establish early treatment and to prevent progression to late-stage disease with its resulting problems.

What are the symptoms of varicose veins?

The main symptoms include: pain, heaviness, tired legs, itching, tingling, heat, cosmetic changes and inflammation. They are usually more noticeable when it is warmer or when standing for a long time.

They may be associated with episodes of venous thrombophlebitis which cause pain, inflammation and heat in the vein. These must be treated medically to prevent progression of the thrombus.

In the late stages, they can lead to skin alterations in the form of discolouration (varicose eczema) and hardening of the skin, this can lead to venous ulcers which cause pain and severely affect quality of life.

What are the risk factors?

Their origin may be an injury to the venous wall or venous valves, or due to venous thrombosis or venous malformation.

Other risk factors include:

• Family history: a family history of varicose veins in first-degree relatives is one of the most significant risk factors.

• Age: deterioration of the venous wall increases with age.

• Sex: varicose veins are more prevalent in women because of their relationship to hormonal factors.

• Pregnancy: seems to be the greatest contributing factor to increased incidence of varicose veins in women, due to the physiological changes that occur in the female body. The higher the number of pregnancies, the more likely that varicose veins will appear.

• Obesity: the higher the body mass index, the greater the likelihood of varicose veins. Standing for prolonged periods: movement activates the muscle pumps in the leg which prevent the development of varicose veins.

What complications arise from varicose veins?

• Ulcers: over time, varicose veins cause skin damage ranging from discolouration (varicose eczema) and thickening of the skin to painful ulcers that require long-term treatment.

• Thrombi: blood accumulates in varicose veins and thrombi can develop causing pain and inflammation in the trajectory of a vein, they should be treated as soon as possible.

• Bleeding: veins near the surface of the skin can tear when bumped and cause venous bleeding.

When to go to a specialist

If you have symptoms of heaviness or swelling in the legs at the end of the day, especially in summer, or the varicose veins are visible, it is advisable to make an appointment with an Angiology and Vascular Surgeon.

During the consultation, your varicose veins will be examined using a Doppler ultrasound mapping study, to detect the cause of their origin and plan the most appropriate type of treatment.

What treatment options are there?

• Preventative medical treatment: helps to prevent the disease from progressing.

• Non-surgical treatment: chemical elimination of spider veins.

• Surgical treatment: thermal ablation techniques (radiofrequency or laser) or adhesive ablation (VenaSeal) to eliminate the cause as well as the varicose veins.

THE WORLD'S OLDEST TORTOISE TURNS 190

The longest living land animal is named Jonathan

Jonathan the turtle became the oldest turtle recorded by humanity in 2022, receiving the Guinness Book of Records award after turning 190 years old. It has been accepted that he was born in 1832 based on photographic records, but it wasn't until November of this year that he was finally granted an official birthday. Jonathan's birthday was declared December 4, 1832 by the governor of the British Overseas Territory, Nigel Phillips, the Guardian reports. It was celebrated with a three-day party at his house on the island of Saint Helena, in the South Atlantic.

The party was held at the governor's house and was completed with a turtle birthday cake. A fitting tribute to a creature that is both the oldest living animal in the world and the oldest turtle on record.

Jonathan is a Seychelles giant tortoise, and he snatched the prestigious crown from the clutches of Tu'i Malila, a radiated tortoise who died at the age of 188 in 1965. Technically, his official title is that of oldest chelonian, an order of shelled reptiles that includes all tortoises, freshwater turtles, and tortoises.

In the absence of official documents, the turtle's age is an estimate based on an old photograph showing his arrival in Saint Helena from the Seychelles in 1882. In the photo, Jonathan appears fully mature, so he is probably at least 50 years old. , which suggests that he was born at least in 1832.

In his impressive passage through the Earth he has seen 39 presidents of the United States parade and he almost did not meet Napoleon. His slow pace of life allowed him to fall behind in certain activities, and he did not bathe until he was 184 years old.

Although he has been better than any land animal for 190 years, time is beginning to take its toll on him: Jonathon has gone blind and has no sense of smell, but he continues to have a hearty appetite, with favourites such as bananas and lettuce heads.

This is the time of year when most people start planning their summer holidays, in some cases it may also be a time when some may be looking for a better quality of life.

The moment you switch on your television all you get is one holiday advert after another, but where would you go that can offer a quality stay, affordable and safe. Yes with all the climate and also political instability where can you go for an enjoyable peace of mind?

I, for one, have no regrets. I moved permanently to the Costa del Sol, it has become one of the best holiday destinations but also a place to live in. To start with I feel quite safe living in a relaxed and laid back place that is far from troubled areas. I simply had had enough of England, and Europe presented a great opportunity to start a better quality life in a friendlier climate.

With over 320 sunny days per year, providing a warm climate year-round and the cultural and gastronomical facilities and leisure on offer, together with the excellent quality of life make a perfect location that attracts thousands of tourists every year.

The Costa means some 140 kilometres of beaches, which means the Mediterranean Sea o ering one of the greatest quality and healthy food varieties, especially fresh sh, but then if you fancy something di erent you are spoiled for choice with restaurants of all nationalities from Chinese to Italian or Indian and the rest, yes even sh and chips.

While the beaches on the Costa del Sol get all the shine, let’s not overlook the mountains and their villages. Here you’ll nd white-washed houses and winding side streets so beautiful they can compete with anywhere in Europe, it’s what I call the Real Spain.

One thing is certain, you may relax if you so prefer, on the other hand there is an abundance of outdoor activities too. While the weather and the beaches perfectly lend themselves for boating, jet skiing, and other fun water sports, there is also plenty of hiking, gol ng, horse riding and a number of other activities to keep you t.

You may well need to seek an activity that suits you because the greatest danger you may be exposed to is falling for the relaxed and laid back lifestyle that may lead you to obesity. I mean what is better than a cold glass of beer and a few tapas while sitting in the shade admiring the sea? But then there was no problem there either, I found that the National Health Service and hospitals are second to none.

Russell Tyrone Jones (November 15, 1968 – November 13, 2004 better known by his stage name Ol' Dirty Bastard (often abbreviated as ODB), was an American rapper. He was one of the founding members of the Wu-Tang Clan, a rap group primarily from Staten Island, New York City, which rose to mainstream prominence with its 1993 debut album Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers).

His professional success was hampered by frequent legal troubles, including incarceration.[5] He died on November 13, 2004, of an accidental drug overdose, two days before his 36th birthday.

ÉXITO EN EL DEBUT LITERARIO DEL MANILVEÑO DIEGO AMADO

Diego Amado y este que les habla, Juan Emilio Ríos, se conocieron en el mejor sitio posible para que ese encuentro fuera de los de envergadura, en los estudios de la Radio Televisión Municipal de Manilva donde él trabajaba por entonces y donde hacía programas iconoclastas y osados como “Radio Terror Manilva” y yo colaboraba altruistamente, dirigiendo un programa musical llamado Disidencias, que sigo haciendo en la actualidad, y participando asiduamente en espacios como “Cineadictos”.

Por entonces apenas intercambiamos algún saludo, pues no coincidimos prácticamente nada, pero el mero hecho de coincidir en un lugar tan creativo, nos unió de alguna manera para que, en el futuro, ahora, ese mínimo contacto allanara el camino para esta atípica colaboración literaria que nos une en esta publicación.

Pasaron los años y uno de los redactores de la emisora, David Gil, me volvió a dar noticias de Diego, diciéndome que había escrito un libro y que quería publicarlo. Yo ese mismo día leí los textos de “Historia de corazones” y me parecieron interesantes y enigmáticos, cargados de crítica social y donde tocaba prácticamente todos los temas candentes de la actualidad de una manera bastante aguda.

Eran una serie de microrrelatos protagonizados por personajes en apuros, que, a duras penas, podían salir a ote en una sociedad viciada y enferma. Me gustaron y rápidamente me puse en contacto con el autor.

Pocos días después estábamos almorzando magní camente en un conocido restaurante de Estepona y madurando el asunto de la publicación de su opera prima, acordamos de mutuo acuerdo, tras su generosa invitación, que yo me sumara al proyecto, aportando textos inéditos que tuviera en mis archivos.

Entonces recordé que poseía un poemario de 14 poemas titulado “La mente es humo” que estaban destinados a publicar bajo el nombre de “Smoke your mind”. Y para completar la heterodoxa obra añadiría mis poemas agrupados bajo el título “Los crímenes del poeta”, que estaban inéditos.

Así que, querido lector, tiene usted en sus manos una rareza auténtica, un libro surgido de la nada gracias a un encuentro fructífero y afortunado entre dos autores que apenas se conocían, pero que han empastado a las primeras de cambio y que prometen proyectos conjuntos en un futuro cercano.
