When we talk about aesthetic medicine, the first things that come to mind are botulinum toxin, commonly known by patients as “Botox,” and hyaluronic acid.

The former represents the most commonly performed facial treatment, accounting for 42% of facial treatments carried out in Spain. Hyaluronic acid is a close second, although its purpose is completely different.

What are they?

Although both are given by injection, neither their composition nor their indications are the same. Botulinum toxin is a drug that acts as a neuromodulator, this means that it infiltrates the muscles and alters the strength with which they act. Alternatively, hyaluronic acid is an absolutely biocompatible molecule, in other words, it occurs naturally in our own bodies, and has a great capacity for the uptake of water molecules, so can therefore be used as a dermal filler.

Use of botulinum toxin and hyaluronic acid

Botulinum toxin inhibits the muscle’s nerve impulses, achieving muscle relaxation and allowing prevention, attenuation or elimination of expressive wrinkles.

Its effect is dose dependent, when a high dose is applied, the patient’s muscle can be blocked, but, if a moderate dose is applied the muscle simply relaxes, the correct dose can therefore ensure that the result will be completely natural.

Botulinum toxin does not only have applications in aesthetic medicine, it can also be useful in those patients who suffer from bruxism. Bruxism is hypertonia of the masseter muscle, one of the muscles used for chewing, this produces a feeling of pressure in the jaw, and can even cause long-term dental problems, headaches...

It may also be used for hyperhidrosis: excessive underarm sweating, soles of the feet and palms of the hands.

Botulinum toxin has historically had numerous applications in medicine, including for headaches, urinary incontinence and focal dystonia (involuntary muscle contractions).

Alternatively, the purpose of hyaluronic acid is to generate volume and hydrate and revitalise the skin. This is achieved thanks to its ability to attract and retain water molecules, capturing up to 1,000 times its own weight in water.

Depending on the type of hyaluronic acid used, it can deliver different results. Cross-linked hyaluronic acid is used to volumize or fill, with lip augmentation being the most popular treatment.

Now imagine tourists wondering in the street of any sea-side town in the middle of the night, well drunk, extremely rowdy, chanting or arguing and fighting not just one night but every night of every summer or holiday time. What town in the UK would allow this to happen?

Local people have their own life to live, they need to sleep to go to work, they need to have their un-interrupted family life and they need some peace in the middle of the night to rest. How much are the local residents supposed to tolerate for the sake of tourism?

It is of little wonder that some Spanish localities have had enough and have started to take some action to discourage this unruly with limits on sale of alcohol and some hefty fines.

Unfortunately it is the British tourists that are mostly to blame for this behaviour mainly in the three most affected localities which are NOT on the Costa del Sol nor the mainland. This also tends to discourage the better class and more affluent tourists.

Mallorca (Magaluf especially) and Ibiza are Mediterranean islands belonging to Spain that for some reason have fallen into a reputation that attracts all night party goers, rowdy or noisy behaviours and unlimited alcohol drinking.

It is regrettable that the British press keeps on painting the wrong picture of Spain. Are they jealous of the best, nearest and cheapest location for a decent, sun blessed, trouble free holiday?

Of course you can drink as much as you like with your meal, or in the privacy of your accommodation. Of course prices have gone up but not as much as they have gone up elsewhere. Sure the climate change affects Spain too but definitely it is not that much hotter than usual for the time of year, it is what makes Spain attractive. The 40º never happened when they said and the highest temperatures occurred inland like in Seville and Cordoba where it is always hotter than other places in Spain.

There are about 8,000 kilometres of coastline in Spain, producing some of the richest landscapes and beaches in all of Europe. What difference can it make if two small beaches will be closed until July for improvements? Ok it is interesting to know but why make the point to warn people?

It is absolutely true, you cannot believe everything you read in the papers, all they try to do is to shock people into buying their papers. The worse they paint a picture the more papers they think they can sell.

I wonder if this is true in the long run when readers realise the information they print is not accurate.

We are usually so engrossed with our old habits that we seem to forget the size and the variety of Spain as a nation.

Every year we get thousands of tourists to the Costa del Sol looking for their favourite spots in the sun while at the same time traffic and getting about gets busier and more difficult because of the ever increasing number of visitors.

But the Costa del Sol is just a strip of land between Malaga and Gibraltar, get past this and you find yourself in the Cadiz region, which I call the real Spain, still unspoilt and even preserved unlike the over commercial Costa.

The beauty is that you do not have to go far to enjoy the difference, and one such places, Barbate, is a coastal town located on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, close to the Strait of Gibraltar

Barbate has a long history of fishing stretching back to Roman times when fish salting was at its peak.

Extremeño a ncado en Manilva desde hace décadas, Rogelio Martínez es uno de los más rmes baluartes de la literatura en nuestro municipio. Miembro activo y entusiasta del Ateneo Libre de Manilva, con varios premios en su haber y una obra comprometida con la sociedad que vivimos y los tiempos que corren, es un animador cultural de primera magnitud en el Campo de Gibraltar y la Costa del Sol.

Ágil y ameno conversador, incómodo contertulio que siempre pone el dedo en la llaga y la sal en la herida, escueza a quien escueza, moleste a quien moleste, Rogelio Martínez Arévalo es además un poeta comprometido con sus creencias y sus ideales, que gusta de decir las cosas a las claras sin alharacas ni palabras hueras, sino de forma directa, a quemarropa, sin miedo a los efectos colaterales que pueda ocasionar.

¿Y qué decir de su faceta como narrador y más concretamente como novelista? Pues que es un escritor de raza, el a sus principios e ideales, conocedor del léxico preciso para contar lo que pretende con conocimiento de causa y llamando las cosas por su nombre y que, tirando de historias que conoce al dedillo, es capaz de transmitir la emoción y la pasión que él siente por los hechos acaecidos a un público

que queda desbordado por todo ese despliegue de sucesos, anécdotas, vivencias, emociones, diatribas, dudas y luchas internas que el autor sabe extraer de la mente, el corazón y el alma del protagonista para transportarla a la mente, el corazón y el alma del lector que queda marcado para siempre por una historia verídica, narrada de una manera justa, exacta, verosímil, adornada con todo lujo de detalles, de matices, de aristas, que hacen de lo contado una experiencia emocionante e irrepetible.

Por ello, mi objetivo con este artículo, es, sencillamente hablaros de las magní cas facultades para contar historias que tiene el autor, al que conozco bien y con el que he compartido muchos eventos literarios, tertulias cinematográ cas, recitales de poemas y viajes emocionantes. He leído sus emocionantes novelas, La Republicana y La Vida golfa de Carlos, así como sus poemarios y sus interesantes relatos, y he escuchado directamente de su voz limpia y rotunda todos sus proyectos venideros que vendrán a enriquecer aún más su portentosa obra siempre comprometida y acorde a sus creencias, sensibilidades, experiencias e idiosincrasia como su novela, Un hombre sencillo, a la que espero con avidez e impaciencia por su autenticidad.
