This authentic Italian recipe will make you feel like you’re at a fancy ristorante

INGREDIENTS (serves 4)

• Fresh clams: about 4 dozen small live clams still in the shell

Olive oil: Use good-quality extra-virgin olive oil

Garlic: one large or two small cloves of garlic.

Red pepper flakes: A generous pinch, about ½ teaspoon.

METHOD

Dry white wine: Cooking wine doesn’t have to be expensive..

Linguine: A one-pound package serves 4 people.

Parsley: A shower of fresh flat-leaf parsley yo add colour to the dish.

Scrub the clams under cold running water or in a bowl of cold water. Pile the clams into a large bowl and cover them with cold water and add a handful of coarse salt l. Let the clams sit for 15-30 minutes. Then drain them and rinse to remove any additional debris.

Put the clams into a large sauté pan. Add 2 tablespoons of water, cover, and set over medium-high heat, 5-8 minutes. The clams will start to open within a couple of minutes. To avoid overcooking, stir and discard any unopened clams. Keep the clam juice left in the pan.

While the pasta water is coming to a boil, set a skillet large enough to hold the cooked spaghetti over medium-low heat. Add the olive oil, minced garlic, and red pepper flakes. Cook, stirring, until the garlic is softened and fragrant, about 5 minutes. Pour in the wine and raise the heat to medium-high then pour in the reserved clam juice for about 1 minute.

Cook until the noodles are al dente—a minute or two less than the recommended cooking time on the package.

Add the pasta to the sauce: Not the sauce to the pasta and let them finish cooking in the sauce, 1-2 minutes. Be sure to toss the noodles with the sauce to coat them well. Stir in the parsley and toss everything together before serving.

A SINGLE MOTHER BY CHOICE?

In recent years we have seen society change in many ways. One of these changes has been the emergence of new family models, distinct from that of the traditional heterosexual couple.

This openness to new family models has been significantly encouraged by women who have chosen to achieve pregnancy without a partner, and by same-sex female couples who have fulfilled their dream of starting their own family. In both cases it is clear that assisted reproduction has played a very significant role in the transformation of family models.

Has there been an increase in single motherhood?

During fertility consultations at HC we have witnessed how the number of women visiting us to achieve a pregnancy without a partner has increased exponentially during recent years.

Why do women make this decision? Although the answer to this question is a very personal one, we are convinced that when a woman wants to become a mother, there is no obstacle not worth overcoming for her to fulfil her dream.

When a women reaches a certain age, she may consider fulfilling her desire to be a mother even without a partner, or it may simply be that there has never been a suitable partner to start a family with. What we do know is that their decision to start their own family is a courageous, solid and enthusiastic one.

Has there been an increase in single motherhood?

Firstly, we must emphasise that women who visit assisted reproduction clinics to achieve a pregnancy often do not do so because of fertility-related problems. In the case of women who choose this reproductive option, they do so simply because they require an anonymous sperm donor to undergo treatment. In general, the treatments we perform most often are artificial insemination (AI) and in vitro fertilization (IVF), in both cases with donor semen. To determine which treatment is most indicated, an advance study of the patient’s fertility is required to rule out any potential problems that would hinder pregnancy.

Artificial insemination, this is recommended when there is good ovarian reserve and no infertility problems have been detected, it is the simpler of the two treatments. Following mild ovarian stimulation, the semen sample, having been treated and prepared, is introduced into the woman's uterus. You could say that artificial insemination is the treatment which is most similar to natural reproduction.

Alternatively, in vitro fertilization involves fertilisation of the patient's eggs in our laboratory using the donor's semen sample; this fertilisation produces embryos. Once the embryos have reached the appropriate stage of development, usually from day 5 to the blastocyst stage, they are selected by the embryologist and transferred into the patient. Although it is indicated in many different circumstances, it is recommended in cases where there is a condition that prevents the sperm from reaching the egg or when the patient's eggs are of low quality.

How are sperm donors selected?

Based on Human Reproduction Law, to be able to access our donor programme at HC Fertility both sperm donors and egg donors are subjected to exhaustive psychological, genetic and immunological checks and tests. All donors must be negative for transmissible diseases in order to guarantee maximum safety and the best results for our patients.

WHEN STRESSED PLANTS MAKE SOUNDS TO COMMUNICATE

For the first time in the world, researchers from Tel Aviv University recorded and analysed sounds clearly emitted by plants. The clicks, similar to the popping of popcorn, are emitted at a volume similar to that of human speech, but at high frequencies, beyond the range of hearing of the human ear. The sounds of plants are informative: they are emitted mainly when the plant is under stress, and they contain information about its state.

The researchers recorded mainly tomato and tobacco plants, but also wheat, corn and cacti. This means that an idyllic field of flowers can be quite a noisy place, even if we cannot hear the sounds.

The sounds that plants make when they are under stress vary, and each plant and each type of stress is associated with a specific identifiable sound. Although imperceptible to the human ear, the sounds emitted by plants can probably be heard by various animals, such as bats, mice, and insects.

The study was conducted and led by researchers at Tel Aviv University. The work was published in the prestigious scientific journal Cell. It was known from previous studies that vibrations were recorded when vibrometers were attached to plants, but until now it had not been verified whether these vibrations were converted into airborne sound waves, that is, into sounds that can be recorded at a distance. This is a question that researchers have debated for many years.

In the first phase of the study, the researchers placed the plants in a loudspeaker box in a quiet, isolated basement with no background noise. Ultrasonic microphones were placed at a distance of about 10 cm from each plant, recording sounds at frequencies of 20-250 kilohertz (the maximum frequency detected by an adult human is about 16 kilohertz).

Before placing the plants in the acoustic box, they were subjected to various treatments to stress them: some plants had not been watered for five days, in some the stem had been cut, while others were intact. The intention was to test if the

Este poemario que supone la ópera prima de su autora está henchido de poemas variados y distintos: los hay amorosos, sentimentales, reflexivos, de denuncia, vitales, paisajísticos, y todos conforman un libro espléndi do donde ha reunido composiciones de muy diversas fases de la vida dLa poética de Mariluz Reyes está en consonancia con su forma de ser: luminosa, alegre y positiva. Si tienes el placer de conocer a la autora que es una mujer que irradia luz y belleza y que siempre adorna su rostro con una sonrisa generosa y te recibe con un abrazo amplio y sincero, y con palabras cálidas y amables. Así en sus poemas apreciamos su pasión por la vida, por amar física y químicamente todo lo que le apasiona, por contarnos sus sentimientos, aunque sean íntimos, y su idiosincrasia personal e intransferible.

Mariluz no puede vivir sin convertir en versos aquello que siente, aquello que le molesta, aquello que le hace vibrar de pasión. Necesita la poesía como catarsis, como expresión de su forma de concebir al mundo. Y como a la poesía necesita la pintura, como otro lenguaje diferente, pero que se complementa con el de los versos.

Así entre pinceladas y metáforas despliega un mundo creativo rico y luminoso, que ha tenido siempre en su poder, pero que no ha sido hasta ahora, cuando se ha

decidido a compartir con todos los que acudan a su llamada, esos poemas que atesoraba desde hacía muchos años. Ha sacado su luz interior al aire para que la respiremos todos, para que su aura nos envuelva a todos los que la queremos y la consideramos una nueva voz, alta y firme que viene a enriquecer el crisol de voces poéticas que nos hemos reunido en este coro que ha surgido en torno a la bodega “Take a wine” de la plaza Manilva de Estepona, gracias a la iniciativa de Tere Floro y del grupo “Taw cultural” que se conforma a posteriori, junto a la tertulia “la balada nómada” que vienen a completar de forma brillante una pléyade de iniciativas y actividades que nos han convertido a todos los asistentes en una familia bien avenida y entusiasta.
