wealthy people on the Costa del Sol or anywhere. If they are that wealthy they can buy whatever they want anywhere they want and not where they are told. I grant you that if they need something while they are here they might aim for a well known brand or name for practicality, but quite frankly why go to a local shop when they can see the lastest and fullest range of products in Paris, Milan, Rome, London, New York and anywhere else at a drop of a hat. What is the point of joining a luxury shopping club other than false snobbery, the real rich do not need to show off and wealth takes you anywhere you want. Mind you, a plausible reason for joining might for instance be to get interesting members’ discounts, or perhaps some special presents when buying from the recommended shops or even a special treatment different from other customers otherwise what is the point just to be recommended to the most exclusive (expensive?) local outlets.

The food that’s killing us By Chevalier de Fleury

A recent article in the “Daily Mail” (18-11-13) reported on a survey highlighting the fact that fish sold by supermarkets can be up to three weeks old. In the early days of retailing, all products were generally served by an assistant from shelves behind the merchant’s counter while customers waited in front of the counter waiting to be served. Most foods and merchandise did not come in the individually wrapped consumer-size packages that we take for granted today. The fish was purchased at the fishmongers, the meat at the butchers, the fruit and greens at the greengrocers and the tins or groceries, non perishable foods, were sold by grocers. 12

www.webexpressguide.com

O.K. so it was a bit of a bind to have to go round so many shops, probably on a daily basis when it came to buying fresh produce like meat, fish and vegetables. The shopping process was slow and the number of customers who could be attended to one at a time was limited by the number of attendants employed in the shop. One thing is certain though, fresh meant really fresh. According to the Smithsonian Institution, the first true supermarket in the United States was opened by Michael J. Cullen, on August 4, 1930, inside a 6,000 square foot former garage in New York City. The store, King Kullen traded under the slogan “Pile it high. Sell it low.” The self service idea and bulk buying practices

bread, fish or meat and vegetables that have gone off, with the result that supermarkets had to find ways to extend the life of fresh supplies so as to keep them fresh looking for as long as possible. Regretfully the companies in question have become so big that they have an unbalanced place in the market with the ability to abuse their position, while their immense buying power puts undue pressure on other parts of the food chain, from farmers and the environment to consumers and competitors. The bigger the supermarket chain, the more ability it has to abuse its position setting prices and demanding longer and longer shelf life for its products.

of grocery stores did not take long to be accepted by the public. The saving of staff costs and cost of supplies bought in bulk was immediately welcomed by the consumer when such savings were reflected on the cost of weekly groceries. This was the beginning of supermarkets growing in numbers all over the world but greed prompted them to supplying perishable foods too and the idea of doing the whole shopping under one roof was certainly found to be most convenient by shoppers. The problem is that buying in bulk foods that have limited shelf live becomes an expensive proposition. Consumers would not buy stale

But what does this really mean to us? What are we really eating when we go the supermarket and purchase our food supplies for the week? Everything is nicely wrapped, clean, well presented and even marked with a sell by date, but are we sure that we are eating what we think we are eating? Perhaps the most honest supermarkets are those that sell frozen produce, at least you know irt was fresh when frozen. Or was it? Vacuum-cooling the produce where it is cooled in a reduced pressure environment prior to packaging, certainly lengthens shelf life by slowing the growth of bacteria and fungi, however it is a relatively expensive method. Fresh can only mean one thing: FRESH! Available to consumers with a few hours of it being picked or caught or killed or cooked. It is the bacteria in the air that cause food to literally rot away, but there are many methods devised for preserving food. Below is a list of

www.webexpressguide.com

13

commonly used preservation techniques, they all in some way either eliminate the microbes or slow their growth, but no way can they qualify food as fresh, even if some methods give the food that appearance. Refrigeration/Freezing – Pasteurization Canning – Pickling - Salting/Sugaring Fermentation - Chemical Preservation Dehydration - Freeze Drying – Irradiation Canning, pickling, freeze drying, dehydrating, salting, sugaring are obvious methods of preservation but the food is no longer fresh although we might like the taste of the altered state of the food such as jams, pickles, etc.. What I really find deceitful are the other methods of preservation, devised to give the false appearance of freshness to deceive the consumer.

14

www.webexpressguide.com

Can’t you tell the difference? Fruit is usually intended to be picked when ready to eat, not kept from maturing on cold shelves or other method for it to rot soon after you purchased it. Fresh fish means fish that is still wriggling when you buy it, certainly not 3 weeks old! While supermarkets are excellent and good value for money in many respects, they should be banned from selling fresh, perishable produce intended to be consumed “fresh”. We should refuse to buy such products from the superstores and look for and encourage the specialized green grocers, butchers, fishmongers and bakers. It is of little surprise that the world is so plagued by obesity and diabetes when our choice of food becomes more and more limited to foods processed for long shelf life or artificially given a fresh look for the same reason.

CARS

LÍNEA DIRECTA REPORTS ON DRIVING IN WINTER Línea Directa is one of the key players in the fight to reduce the number of accidents on our roads. For almost 20 years, it has promoted research into accident rates in order to encourage safe driving habits. Due to the risks involved with driving in winter months, it now offers advice on how to act in adverse weather conditions.

With respect to the car:

With respect to driving:

1

If you often drive in snow, consider buying winter tyres. In any case, avoid any sudden movements and, as a general rule, do not overtake. Take special care with snow which has turned into ice and always drive at low speeds.

1

2

2

3

Check your car, especially the mechanical components. Pay attention to brakes, lights, windscreen wipers and break fluid, antifreeze and oil levels.

Don’t forget to check the condition of your tyres including the spare wheel, checking pressure, tread and the grooves of each tyre, which must have a minimum depth of 1.6mm.

3

Always take a reflective jacket, two warning triangles and a torch with you. Also ensure that your mobile is charged in case you need to use it in an emergency.

If it is foggy or raining, adapt your speed and distance from the vehicle ahead to the weather conditions. Do not brake suddenly to avoid skidding.

Aim the vehicle’s heating system at the windows to prevent them from fogging up as a result of humidity.

4

When overtaking, reaching crossroads, leaving tunnels and in open spaces, be careful with any sudden gusts of wind, which might lead to a loss of steering and the vehicle overturning.

IN MY OPINION

United Europe?

Is that a joke! We are as far from a United Europe as Earth is from Venus I don’t mean inaccessible but I do mean quite far. I remember my younger school days when I used to converse with my fellow students and share the dream of a very possible unification of Europe so as to be able to stand up and defend Europe from American interference, because after all they used their political and financial might for their own sole benefit. The United States of America are really lucky in a way because it is a nation of immigrants of all nationalities united by one common cause and 16

www.webexpressguide.com

that is the desire to be free and independent from any other nation outside its territories. Despite the wounds of a segregated America and a civil war, they were still bound as one united nation. “United we stand and, divided we fall” has never seen a truer example. Of course I now come to realise that the unification of Europe as a single state is not such a novel concept. I suppose the Romans were an early example of an attempt to create a single nation in Europe. They achieved this for a short era in history through their military power. One could say that Napoleon and even Hitler were inspired by the Romans to achieve the same objective. Others such as George Washington, Giuseppe Mazzini and Victor Hugo predicted

IN MY OPINION

it may happen democratically. As a matter of fact George Washington wrote to the Marquis de La Fayette that “one day, on the model of the United States of America, a United States of Europe will come into being”. But will it ever happen? We have two World Wars in the twentieth century, with their floods of European blood that firmly established the need for political unity in Europe. A unified, single European nation means a single central government, a single central bank, and a single central set of legislation and we have never been so disunited and confronted with such financial disarray, economic misery, and political chaos as we have now all over Europe. A United States of Europe can only be achieved when all nations and its representatives finally wake up and start thinking of the common good of Europe as opposed to their own personal ones. All religions believe in God so why is it that they kill each in the different names of their God? What Europe needs is real leaders, not weak politicians content to be a big fish in a small tank, leaders who have the vision to see the benefits and strength derived from a united nation. How can this be achieved when Scotland wants its independence, Wales want its independence Britain sits on the USA’s lap, refuses a single European currency and is even considering leaving the E.U., while Germany still thinks it can conquer Europe, dictating through its financial current advantages?

What chance is there of a United Europe when politicians, especially in Spain, Italy and Greece get away with robbing their people blind and then make them pay for the deficit? Yes sure you can impose stringent measures for them to follow in order to remain in the EU. but that does not stop them dipping their sticky fingers into the funds, it merely imposes even more burdens on the people. No wonder Spain is in such deep recession. The people have very little or nothing left to be taken so they are turning to luring other nationals to “Invest? Visit?” or shall we say leave their money in Spain and go back whence they came from? Europe needs a central government, a central law court, a central bank and most of all a central enforcement body to be elected democratically in the best interest of all the people of Europe. Enough with individuals who are only interested in single national power for their own personal ego or to line their own pockets! So how far are we from Venus? Do you think that different languages present an

insurmountable obstacle? No doubt it would become more easily achievable if everyone understood one language. www.webexpressguide.com

MUSHROOMS

Be careful if you pick your own

Regrettably we have had one unfortunate incident this year when a man in Olvega died after eating a poisonous mushroom.

It is said it was a “Death Cap”. This variety is extremely dangerous and it will almost always kill whoever eats it. It can easily be mistaken for one of the harmless types this is why it is essential you know what you are doing when you pick your own mushrooms. Someone who eats a Death Cap will not feel any symptoms for 10 to 14 hours. Then vomiting, diarrhoea, and cramps will follow. After awhile, these symptoms will go away and the person will feel fine. Unfortunately three or four days after eating the mushroom, the person will have kidney or liver failure and will die five to ten days after eating the Death Cap. The Death Cap looks a lot like other edible mushrooms. It has a cap up to six inches wide, and a stalk up to five inches tall. The cap can be yellowish, brownish, whitish, or greenish in colour, often sticky to the touch. Underneath the cap, white gills and a white cup at the base. Death Caps are seen from September to November underneath pines, oaks, dogwoods, and other trees. For more information see:

A delicious recipe provided by

Enough with savouries COCOMO what about a tasty cake?

Cocktail Bar & Restaurant

This is a Christmas cake that matures if kept. You can make it weeks beforehand and if there is any left over you can also have it for New Year. You can place the finished cake on a round cake board and either place in a fancy round tin or wrap in clear film and tie with a bow.

Ingredients •

350g raisins

275f sultanas

275g currants

4 tbsp brandy or port

1 tsp cinnamon

250g butter, softened

1 tsp grated lemon rind

250g dark muscovado sugar

50g mixed peel

350g plain flour

100g glace cherries, halved

1 tsp baking powder

100g pecans, chopped

Pinch of salt

125g apricot jam

6 eggs

2 to 3 tbsp water

50g ground almonds

Extra glace fruits and pecans for

1 tsp mixed spice

decoration

Preparation: • Put the raisins, sultanas and currants in a large bowl and pour in the brandy and port. Leave to soak overnight. • Next day, line and grease a 23cm (9 in) diameter cake tin. Tie a double thickness of brown paper around the outside to come about 4 cm (1 ½ in) higher than the cake. Pre-heat the oven to 150C/300F/Gas. • Beat the butter and sugar together until fluffy. Sift the flour, baking powder and salt. Beat in the eggs one at a time, adding some of the flour mixture with each egg. Beat in the remaining flour and almonds. Add mixed spice, cinnamon and lemon rind. Finally mix in dried fruit and nuts. Spoon into the tin and level. Bake in the centre of the oven for about 2 and a half hours (after 1 hour, cover the cake with greaseproof paper), or until the cake is firm to the touch and a skewer in the centre comes out clean. Leave to cool in the tin for about 30 minutes. Turn out on to a wire rack and cool and then wrap in aluminum foil and store. • To decorate, warm the jam and water in a saucepan, sieve and brush some over the cake. Alternatively simply warm the apricot glaze and use that instead. Arrange the glace fruits and nuts and brush on more of the glaze. Finally tie a wide ribbon around the cake. 24

I love SUSHI Sushi is one of the most popular dishes in Japan and the best known Japanese dish all over the world.

Not to be confused with Sashimi, which means “sliced raw fish”, Sushi means “seasoned rice” and it was used as a method of preserving fish. Today’s sushi comes in many forms and can be eaten with chopsticks or the hand.

unusual types of sea life, such as urchins or fish eggs. The seafood is wrapped in seaweed and shaped like a boat, usually resting on a little pile of rice. It is definitely for the more adventurous and not recommended for beginners.

The real Japanese Sushi is not to be confused with the run of the mill Sushi that is found in different types of restaurants, it has a taste and aroma of its own and once tried it can be quite an addictive delicacy. Sushi usually can be found in four basic forms:

Temaki is a cone-shaped piece of seaweed

Maki-sushi, which consist of a roll of sea

weed (nori) on the outside with a middle layer of rice and an innermost layer of fish and/or vegetables. This is the ideal Sushi for the first time beginner.

Nigiri-sushi is the most familiar to sushieaters. It consists of a piece of fish resting on top of a block of rice. The fish is usually raw, and sometimes a strip of seaweed is used to hold the fish and rice together. Gunkan sushi is a

little more exotic. It tends to use

26

(nori) on the outside with the ingredients inside the cone like an ice cream and it is eaten with fingers.

To appreciate a good “Sushi” it is important to choose the right place to have it. Quality is of the utmost importance. The best place where I have had Sushi here on the Costa is Wasabi, in Puerto Banus. It is a proper Sushi bar as you would find in modern Japan. They specialise in Sushi and Sashimi and their available selection is very extensive, even to include “fried rolls” to subdue the taste of raw fish for the beginners. Remember to order a variety of sushi. Different flavours complement one another, and this gives the chef an opportunity to show off both his fish and his talents. Most sushi chefs season the short grained rice with vinegar and sugar after it is cooked. Soy sauce is used for dipping the fish part of the sushi before eating, Wasabi, a green horse radish paste, is also used as a condiment, like mustard. Papery thin slices of ginger are

served to cleanse the palate between different types of sushi. The chopsticks should never be used for drumming, flipping, or sharing food. If you must pass a piece of sushi from one plate to another, use the opposite ends of the chopsticks that have not touched your mouth, try and eat it in one bite, it is considered improper if you don’t. Tea, sake, and beer are considered acceptable beverages when eating sushi. Or you might want to try it with some Oroya white wine, a wine made in Castilla (Spain), by a Japanese oenologist and which goes particularly well with sushi. Do not pre-judge Sushi, and make sure you try it at Wasabi where I know you will get as good a serving as you would in Japan.

ART

Daniel Rubio We are launching this new section with the introduction of this Spanish painter whose work is so realistic that it seems photographic. Born in Zaragoza, Daniel Rubio began his artistic career in the early 90´s as a sculptor During these first stages of his development, he took part in numerous exhibitions within Aragon and Navarre standing out especially with his wood carvings, his favourite material for sculptures. He then discovered that his real passion was painting to which he dedicated more and more time. 28

He moved to Malaga in 2000 where he developed even further his personal portrait painting technique with particular interest in expressing the soul of the subject especially in humans. During these last years he has taken part in several Southern Spain exhibitions and most of his paintings are now in the hands of private owners in Spain and the USA. He is now trying to make himself known in other parts of Europe and to exhibit to a wider audience. We are showing here some of his work, which I am sure you will agree is impressive.

Most common age

for health

‘wake-up call’ The average person is struck by a health ‘wake-up call’ at the age of 39, new research has revealed.

As people approach the age of 40, it appears that is when they really start to worry about the long-term health implications of the bad habits and poor diets they enjoyed earlier in life. A study of 2,000 adults aged 25 and over found that 85% have reached a point in their life where they have started to worry about the health implications of their lifestyle. The research, shows three quarters of the population are so concerned they have gone on to make serious lifestyle changes such as giving up smoking or alcohol, exercising more, eating a healthier diet and even quitting their job. But almost one in two admits they are worried about whether it will be possible to reverse the damage caused by their previous lifestyle. And 64% regret not making more effort with their health when they were younger.

“This survey is yet more evidence of that - it seems that people leave it until they reach the age of 39 before they start to take their health seriously. “Research shows us that the more you look after yourself in your early years, the more likely you are to live a longer and healthier life.” Fear of turning 40 drives lifestyle changes - contact your doctor for a health check as many conditions can be helped if diagnosed early

Christmas & New Year in Andalucia It may be this time of year all over the world, but there are some differences in Andallucia. We speak of the Spanish Christmas on the 6th January and the 12 grapes at midnight on the 31st of January. But as a matter of fact Christmas in Spain is quite a treat. The action gears up in mid-December and continues until January 6th. In between there is the giant lottery, splendid nativity scenes, lots of great food and a big New Year’s Eve. Although Andalucia benefits from a mild climate on the Costas, it can be quite cold in winter, but this does not discourage the locals from using every opportunity to celebrate with various different traditions in different parts of Spain. For instance, December 21st, the shortest day of the year, is celebrated in Granada and nearby Jaen by jumping through bonfires for the fiesta de Las Hogueras. El Gordo, the big lottery is drawn on the 22nd December. Every town and Village has its own traditions; however Christmas eve, on 24th December is a family affair, the most important part of Christmas and the meal on that day is the biggest of the year. There is nothing as ubiquitous as turkey, the only rule is that people eat ‘well’. Lobster

is very common, and a roast of some sort is essential, usually lamb or suckling pig. In addition, most families will also have fish soup and an abundance of other seafood, cheeses, hams and pates. Dinner starts late and will go on for a couple of hours. Proceedings are interrupted at midnight by the chimes of the local church, calling worshipers to the ‘misa del gallo’ (Mass of the Rooster), so called because it is said that a rooster crowed on the night Jesus was born. The biggest ‘misa del gallo’ is at the Benedictine monastery at Montserrat near Barcelona. Adults exchange gifts on Christmas Eve and kids will often get a little something, but they have to wait until January 6th (Los Reyes) for that new Playstation. This is when the Three Kings will `parade the streets distributing sweets to crowds of children. Like Christmas Eve, Christmas Day in Spain is traditionally a family day. Couples will normally spend Christmas Eve with one set of parents and Christmas Day with the other. By the evening of the 25th, most shops and bars are open again and these days more and more youths have started going out on the town. The New Year is welcomed with fireworks and the eating of 12 grapes on each stroke of the clock to ensure good fortune for the next 12 months.

FIESTAS PARTIES

“¿Qué me pongo para estas fiestas?” “What shall I wear?” By Maribel Pichaco Gonzalez

December and January are months of cold weather, snow and festivities. It is time for the Christmas lights, homemade cakes, gifts and parties when we gather with family and friends and when most women ask themselves the eternal question: “What am I wearing?”

pret a porter

I have put together some suggestions which you might like as black dresses with lace are a hit this season and, according to the accessories you choose, they can be worn at a serious dinner with your bosses or as crazy party dress

Every woman’s companion is the makeup that completes the look to show a perfect and bright skin, using yesteryear’s eye marker and metallic shades with greater shine and glossy effect for the night with lips in intense dark red colour.

And what about red? It is a classic for Christmas times, in both long and short versions.

And finally what do you think of this fun nail design for a very special evening? www.webexpressguide.com

Attending a classy, well orga free for soirée is one way of getting p++++d whilst still knowing that nothing outrageous will you happen, but its not the kind of place where around skirt your with , floor the on will find yourself your your ears and a complete stranger between my in and head legs singing Oops-Up-side your opinion is the poorer for it. Fancy dress party’s always sound like a good do idea to start with, but keep in mind, that if youthe manage to pull and end up going home withis that dish of the day, then the inevitable outcome ts the you will find yourself wandering the stree next day in search of a taxi dressed as a 42 year old Britney Spears. So the moral seems to be, steering a fine line between having a kneesup, but managing to keep them together! Happy Christmas!

YES IT’S TRUE

HUMOUR

The year you stop believing in Santa Claus is the year you start getting clothes for Christmas. Why is Christmas just like a day at the office? You do all the work and the fat guy with the suit gets all the credit. On the first Xmas, the first of three Wise Men stepped carefully into the stable but sank his golden slipper into a big pile of manure.”Jesus Christ!” he yelled. The woman beside the manger turned to her husband and said, “Now, Joseph, isn’t that a better name for the kid than Irving?”

Why is Santa Claus always so happy? Because he knows where all the naughty girls live. Anyone who believes that men are the equal of women has never seen a man trying to wrap a Christmas present. It was Christmas and the judge was in a merry mood as he asked the prisoner, “What are you charged with?” “Doing my Christmas shopping early,” replied the defendant. “That’s no offense,” said the judge. “How early were you doing this shopping?” “Before the store opened,” countered the prisoner. On New Year’s Eve, Marilyn stood up in the local pub and said that it was time to get ready. At the stroke of midnight, she wanted every husband to be standing next to the one person who made his life worth living. Well, it was kind of embarrassing. As the clock struck, the bartender was almost crushed to death. 48
