HEALING TRAUMA WITH BRAINSPOTTING Did you know that only about 10% of the population has not suffered from one or more traumas during their life? Trauma is a psychological response to an event that is perceived as lifethreatening or dangerous. It can be caused by a variety of unique events, natural disasters, wars, accidents, a violation, grief, separation, being a witness to a traumatic experience from another person, but also repetitive stress causing experiences such as abuse, humiliation, abandonment, or violence to name a few. If trauma has not been properly processed, it can have long-lasting effects on a person’s mental and physical health, including anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, loneliness, lack of sense of life, anger, addictions, psychosomatic illnesses and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Every experience is stored in the body, especially the traumatic ones that frequently get blocked in the deepest part of our brain, the reptilian brain. This primitive part of the brain can only react with attack, flight or freeze. The American psychotherapist David Grant developed the Brainspotting twenty years ago, a groundbreaking technique to process trauma. He realised that where you look affects how you feel. The brain can be activated by focusing a “brainspot”, which is a point in the visual field that provokes a reaction in the client and at the same time corresponds to the location of the trauma in the brain. Meanwhile, the client connects with physical and emotional sensations related to the treated issue. This releases blocked energy, and the traumatic experience is processed, healed and integrated. During the session the client is also lead to a resource point where they feel grounded and safe. This supports self-healing. Apart from Brainspotting, María Degen also offers Gestalt therapy, family constellations, Mindfulness and personal growth courses, also Shiatsu (Japanese massage). Caramelised Onion & Squash Baked Ricotta Serve this delicious vegetarian centrepiece at the table alongside your turkey and other meats!

INGREDIENTS (serves 8) 500 g butternut squash, peeled and halved lengthways 4 tsp. olive oil, plus extra to grease 1 large red onion, thinly sliced 2 tsp. sugar 1 tbsp. balsamic vinegar 500 g ricotta 2 medium eggs 50 g vegetarian hard cheese or hard goat’s cheese, finely grated 1/4 tsp. freshly grated nutmeg 3 thyme sprigs

METHOD 1. Preheat oven to 190°C (170°C fan) mark 5. Line a baking tray with baking parchment. Slice squash into 1cm-thick wedges and toss with 2tsp oil and some seasoning. Arrange in a single layer on the lined tray and roast for 20-25 minutes, until just tender. Set aside until cool enough to handle. 2. Heat remaining oil in a medium frying pan over low heat. Fry the onion stirring occasionally for 10-12 minutes until softened. Add sugar, vinegar and a pinch of salt, increase heat to high and bubble for 1-2 minutes, until reduced and sticky. Remove from heat and set aside. 3. In a bowl, whisk together ricotta, eggs, cheese, nutmeg, ¾tsp salt and some freshly ground pepper. 4. Lightly grease and line a 900g loaf tin with a strip of baking parchment. Put thyme sprigs in the bottom of the tin, then arrange the squash slices neatly on top in 2 layers. Spoon over onions in an even layer, followed by the ricotta mixture, smoothing to level. Put on a baking tray and cook in oven for 45-50 minutes, until just set firm. 5. OPINION THE PROBLEM FOR THE AIR TAXIS OF TOMORROW Buildings in cities could affect the future of air taxi due to the effects of wind gusts passing between them.

The air taxi market is almost ready to take off, with companies like Boeing, Hyundai, Airbus and Toyota building fleets to take travellers into the skies. Europe and the United States have drafted new rules that will pave the way for air taxis to begin operating this decade, and Australia's Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) will follow suit. Increasingly sophisticated studies in recent years, including recent work by RMIT University's unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) research team, have measured how sudden wind gusts form around city buildings can destabilise aircraft. Lead researcher and aerospace engineer Dr Abdulghani Mohamed, who has been studying wind gust dynamics for more than a decade, says this needs to be properly addressed in Australian and overseas regulations before we fill the skies over our cities with air taxis and other drones. Low-flying aircraft are at risk from wind gusts because they land and take off at low speeds, explains Mohamed, and RMIT research reveals that sudden wind gusts can pose significant safety problems for air taxis and airlines and drones in less than a second. As a result, air taxis and drones will need more power to land or take off in cities compared to an airport or open space, he explained. "These aircraft need powerful engines that can quickly change the thrust generated by the propellers to quickly force the vehicle back onto its trajectory, a process that requires more energy," said Mohamed of the School of Engineering. 'Existing buildings can also be reused as vertiports, but may need to be modified to improve aerodynamics near the runways. The effectiveness of these design features can be evaluated through scale experiments in wind tunnels or full-scale measurements.

"When determining the location of the 'vertiports', where these vehicles will take off and land, we must also determine the dangerous regions to avoid. This will improve safety and reduce disruption to a fleet due to wind conditions,” Mohamed said. “In Australia, it is not yet clear whether this falls under the jurisdiction of CASA or the Bureau of Meteorology, however air taxis will need to receive weather information at much higher resolution and speed than is currently possible. This is important for flight planning. "The margin of error will be much smaller than at airports, where large planes can tolerate much stronger gusts. “We won’t have that flexibility with air taxis in cities.”

'Comprehensive full-scale wind flow mapping will no longer be daunting in the future. "We continue to develop our wind detection drones - a swarm of drones instrumented with wind anemometers - to map with great precision around large infrastructure." The recommendations could contribute to the regulation of vertiports, flight paths and air taxi requirements in Australia and potentially around the world. Researchers track wind gusts around buildings and study different forms of construction that can minimize adverse effects. They also continue to delve into the sensitivity of vehicles to gusts and turbulence, as well as flight stability technologies.
