GET NOTICED!!!!
Monthly
ADVERTISE IN LIFESTYLE MONTHLY MAGAZINE AND REACH OUT TO OUR LOYAL READERS
HAPPY NEW YEAR! Welcome to 2011 and the launch edition of Lifestyle Monthly’s travel-sized version. We have moved from A4 to a smaller handbag size, making it more user-friendly. This may well be the most compact magazine we have bought out but don’t be fooled by its size. It’s what’s inside that counts. Our research found readers preferred the idea of the travel-size magazine and we are making sure you have the opportunity to trial the new compact travel-size version. We’re about making life easier for you. We are confident we will be warmly received by you. Remember, here at Lifestyle Monthly we are as passionate about the brand as ever and intend to remain as Liverpool’s number one free, glossy, monthly title. We have so much to plan for the forthcoming year. As well as your monthly, glamorous dose of Lifestyle Monthly for you, we have a bumper calendar of events for you to get involved in. There’s the Wirral Fashion Festival in March, our Liverpool Lifestyle Awards, recognising all the fashionable and entrepreneurial talent in the city. And of course we will be holding Liverpool Fashion Week in the autumn following the immense success of last year’s most talked about event – The Daily Mirror rated our event better than London – we plan to do it bigger and better this year! But back to this month and we have some fantastic, exclusive interviews for you. Settle down with a cuppa and read all about Duffy’s new album. We were also fortunate to grab Jamelia when she came up to Liverpool to be part of The Prince’s Trust Diamond Ball. If your New Year resolutions include changing your body for the better, then keep up with our fitness gurus, Kane and Lewis from Elite Fitness who are keeping me fit and helping keep the flab at bay. They’re training people for Liverpool’s half marathon and if you’re planning on taking part then we’ll be offering you some tips to get you in shape ready for the big run. Finally our new columnist, Darren Lawrenson sheds light on keeping those resolutions. Now is the time to change your life for the better, but it’s not going to happen if you do everything the same as last year is it? Until February, thanks for picking up Lifestyle Monthly. And go to our website to book tickets for the Wirral Fashion Festival at Thornton Hall- spaces are limited so first come, first served! Stay warm and safe, Amanda Moss, editor

Janan, he has over 30 years experience in Japanese cuisine and has spent the last 2 years preparing Sakura's menu. He and head chef Girish Gopalakrishnan, former chef of 3 star Michelin Gordan Ramsay, work with 18 other highly skilled chefs from around the world to bring this gastronomical experince to life.
Restaurant reviews
If, like me, your only real experience of Japanese cuisine is the suishi counter at your favourite supermarket you really do need to get out more! After a weekend in New York City living on bagels and pasta -( carb loading and carb replacing )pre and post NYC marathon a visit to Sakura the new Japanese restaurant in Exchange Flags, Liverpool, was just what the doctor ordered-lots and lots of protein and in the form of some of the most beautiful fish ,chicken and meats cooked to perfection on open woks in front of our eyes. There is no doubt that Girish"s ( one of the 3 owners) boast that only the very finest cuts of meat and the very finest and freshest fish are chosen is true .You do not need to be a food conoisseur ( which neither myself nor my companion are, to appreciate this as well as to appreciate the fresh vegetables and other lovely fresh ingredients cooked with it. Oh and those fried shriumps are to die for! Masamitso Morino hasd been brought in a restaurant executive chef. Born in Osaka,
Page 18
Sakura is a restaurant where you get a cabaret act - knife juggling, egg throwing, and jokes by the dozen all provided whilst the talented and charismatic chef cooks fresh ingredients in front of your eyes and Jaz did a spectacular act I have to say .This is a great party piece for the family, especially young kids (I will certainly be taking mine, perhaps sunday lunch) and very good value -£25 for 3 courses and you get more than just 3 courses for this. The staff's attention to detail was amazing, we noted that every diner was treated like a VIP celebrity. The thing that stood out for me is that these guys can really cook and whilst the party atmosphere is great fun, they have not taken their eyes off the ball like some other eateries I can think of - because they know that food quality, taste and cooking is still what it's all about.-That and the friendliness and welcoming nature of the staff we have no doubt that Sakura will thrive.
I knew as soon as I entered Bem Brazil, the latest addition to Liverpool One’s growing list of restaurants, that I was going to love it. The cascading water feature and enormous amethyst crystal statue in the reception area immediately warmed me. That and the enormous smile of the staff who fell over themselves to be helpful. As a believer in crystal healing, amethysts reflects negative energy and are supposed to calm people down. Brazilians are known for their fiery passion so is this why this oversized crystal greets you?
where the tables are nicely spaced out. The authentic barbeque provides everlasting supply of juicy and mouthwatering meats. If like me, the thought of an all-you-can-eat establishment fills you with dread, fear not at Bem Brazil. The churrascaria (Portugese for barbeque) adventure is like no other. Brazilian food is as colourful, flavoursome and creative as carnival time in Rio de Janiero. As well as juicy steaks and sizzling barbeques, you’ll usually find a delicious array of homely dishes and fried treats and of course great cocktails.
We arrived early and settled into a game of table football by the bar while the table was prepared for us. We were offered cocktails from an impressive menu but I need to fill my rumbling tummy first!
I was impressed at the amount of variety of food laid out at the buffet, including to die for pan fried fish, which all made it difficult to decide what to eat and that is before I even considered the meats which came to the table as frequently as we requested them. I wanted to taste everything for a set price of £12.50 for lunch (£17.50 at weekends) and £24.50 for dinner , it’s not only tasty but delicious on your pocket as well.
Bem Brasil is a large, contemporary restaurant with 220 covers upstairs
The meats including all the usual suspects, pork, beef, chicken, sausage and ribs were for me cooked to perfection and tasted amazing and of excellent quality. My guest wanted

their steak cooked a little less rare and this was accommodated for with ease. I loved that we could pace our own meal but when we gave the signal the meat cames at us thick and fast and it was tempting to try everything by the experienced passadors who carved the meats fresh at our table.. The service was excellent, polished and professional. We were left wanting for nothing. And at the end, our waitress suggested we tried the cinnamon pineapple that turned out to be a taste sensation which accompanied my Choco Loco cocktail perfectly. Bem Brazil is a bright and buzzy Brazilian ‘churrascaria’ restaurant and deserves to be famous for its Brazilian steakhouse menu. The people who work at Bem Brazil really care about what they do and their passion is reflected in the way they look after you. Your feel like you have been invited to a party. And you are the guest of honour. Hanover Street Liverpool Merseyside L1 3DN 0151 709 0044

While most of you reading this will have had enough of turkey, at the time of writing this, 'twas the week before Christmas and turkey was the hottest thing on the menu at the delectable Formby Hall Hotel Golf Resort and Spa. Spending a leisurely lunch among the exquisite surroundings at Formby Hall was absolutely fabulous and it was nice to get out of the city for a couple of hours. Arriving with a whining 19 month child in tow, we were swiftly seated at a lovely table overlooking the golf course. The waiters swiftly attended to the baby by bringing her a plateful of crackers and fruit to soothe her before removing all glassware from her reach. It was a very thoughtful touch and did the trick. The Christmas party spirit was in full flow during our lunch, the restaurant was full with happy revellers of all ages and crackers were being snapped all over the place. There was a lovely, warm atmosphere and I loved the decor, it was fresh and cosy. We were given a set menu and the manager explained that although there was the option of the traditional turkey, throughout the year the restaurant always offers a fish main course, carvery roast and a vegetarian option.

For starters I had the melon balls with a gorgeous sweet and tangy lemon sorbet. I couldn't decide if it was a desert or starters, it would have suited both. My husband had the creamy pear and watercress soup. For mains I had the tradition Christmas lunch- roast turkey, roast potatoes, creamy mash, roast parsnips, carrots, brussel sprouts and stuffing. The kind of dish I could eat all year round, really. Served in a sea of piping hot gravy was just how I loved it while Simon had the lamb shank with butternut squash and sweet potato mash. Again, a winning combination. For desert it was a struggle to fit everything in, but I had a blueberry cheesecake on a delicious soft biscuit while Simon had the Christmas pudding, both washed down with lattes while the baby was given a warm hot chocolate. Perfect on a crisp winter's day.
Whilst dining I couldn't help feeling that I was on an elegant cruise ship. Given the shape of the room and the

When choosing somewhere to dine, a luxury hotel may not be the obvious choice but it's definitely a good one. I will return and maybe next time, make time for the spa as well. Maybe it is my age or maybe it was the time of year, but the lure of a beautiful hotel in luxurious surroundings is very appealing for a dining experience and Formby Hall Golf Resort and Spa ticked all the boxes for me. Give me a posh (but certainly not pretentious) hotel any day.
The attractive presentation of the dishes was a treat and I sunk into the chair very easily. Had we not received a call from the school to collect a poorly child we could have stayed much longer.

New Years Resolutions? Pores for thought... We start every year off with the best intentions of ditching the bad habits in favour of a new healthier lifestyle. Here are a few resolutions to get your skin looking and feeling better: 1. Invest in a good moisturiser with an SPF and a night cream to 2. Eat a healthy balanced diet including plenty of water 3. Cleanse, Tone and Moisutrise daily 4. Exfoliate weekly 5. Make sure you’re getting enough sleep every night
We all have days when no matter what we do our skin can become irritated and problematic. For these days, make-up is your best friend! For covering and concealing problem areas you want products that are lightweight yet durable. I use a lot of products by Benefit Cosmetics for personal use and for my kit. They are really not too heavy like most corrective products yet hide a multitude of sins! To obtain a natural, fresh faced look for in the day, firstly use That Gal brightening face primer (£20.50) it can be worn alone or under base. It instantly gives you a more radiant complexion. For concealing I would highly recommend Erase Paste (£18.50), with this product a little goes a long way not only does it cover imperfections brilliantly it doesn’t clog pores and is really light. For brightening those dark circles under eyes, Ooh La Lift (£15.50) is perfect, known as the ‘instant eye lift’ tired, dull eyes will be a thing of the past! Product of the Month: Brows a Go Go by Benefit (26.50): I absolutely adore this palette it comes with a wax to hold stray hairs down and in place. 2 Brow powders to fill in any gaps. A highlighter to accent the brow bone and a product to brighten the inner corners of your eyes. Complete with tweezers, mini angled brush and eyeliner this palette is all you need to create perfect defined brows. It also comes with a step by step guide for those unsure how to use the products. For info/advice or to book an appointment contact me via my website: or alternatively via my Facebook Fan Page Sian Faulkner Makeup Artist.

Health & Fitness
Diary s s e n t i F of the editor with her personal trainer
Well it's the beginning of the new year and as my life coach says, nothing is going to change unless I actually make the change. I am not going to lose a stone just by declaring that I am going to lose a stone. I have changed my diet. The lattes and the diet cokes have been reduced to one or two a week now, which is impressive for me. But no matter how much I exercise, no matter how much fitter I have become, those bouncy buttocks aren't going to tighten unless I give up the sweeties. I am 40 this year. Oh. My. God. I always thought 40 was really old and I now I am heading that way. So it's really important that I look fabulous and not my age, I mean I certainly don't act it. Kane wants me to up my training sessions to three times a week with him but , logistically, it's not going to happen. It's hard enough running a family and a magazine without finding extra hours in the day to train. He tells me that I need to find three hours a week to myself. I say that's impossible, as any working parent will tell you.
Lewis
Even though there are some benefits to training. Last week I turned up to a session
Bailey
uptight and stressed out. My heart definitely wasn't into a workout and and my warm up definitely lacked lustre. Kane knew exactly what to do. He whipped out the boxing gloves and within ten minutes I was envisaging the faces of the people who had wound me up and boy, was I giving it some welly. I spend 45 minutes right hooking, jabbing and throwing some fine punches. The anxiety drained away and I hardly noticed my aching arms and shoulders until I got home. By then I had laughed so much during the session I was almost crying. Who says training has to be hard? Well ok, it is, but it's also enjoyable. I have been fortunate to find a company, Elite Fitness, who actually care about their clients and listen to their needs, how they want their bodies to change and how they can help them in their personal fitness journey. Owned by Lewis Bailey and working along side him, Kane Warren, these two guys are in my eyes, the number one personal trainers in Merseyside, I am sure of it. I mean they have put up with me for the last year. 2011 is the time for me to to pay them back for their time and stamina in dealing with me- I am going to get those results. I am now squatting with 10 kg dumbells on each arm, I am doing up to 150 lunges per session, (not without moaning, though). This year, however, I am going to change. Bring on those ab crunches.
Lewis Bailey guides you in the right direction

ALMA DE CUBA LAUNCH NEW ALBUM Liverpool's Alma de Cuba has teamed up with "Orquesta Buenos Tiempos" to release their first album. Recorded live from the streets of Havana, Cuba, the album has been created by Alma de Cuba’s resident band 6ix Toys, with friends, under the working title "Orquestra Buenos Tiempos". "The idea behind the project was to create a unique mix of soul, blues, funk, jazz, rock and Afro-Cuban Latin. We are incredibly proud to combine some of the hottest young UK talents alongside Cuba's finest musicians," says producer of the album Fredo. It contains a mix of popular songs, with a strong Latin American beat, and authentic Cuban sounds from their journey weaved into the production. The track list includes versions of Blur’s Song 2, Yolanda Be Cool’s massive summer hit, We Don’t Speak Americano and Michael Jackson’s Black or White. A launch party took place recently at Alma de Cub where guests could buy the album. Helen Tweed, marketing manager at Alma de Cuba, said: “Alma de Cuba isn’t just a venue, it’s an experience. The album is a real World Class fusion of Cuban and popular music, and the sounds Orquestra Buenos Tiempos pefectly depict how we wanted the venue represented."
