DO IT YOURSELF

Jean-Marc Monbec has lived and worked in La Clusaz since 2004, is a self-taught candle maker, and now since November 2018, a master candlemaker. Previously a confirmed city dweller, he worked in the service sector and candle making was a completely new departure in life for him. On discovering La Clusaz he was immediately seduced by the pace of life in a village, where human contact and relationships replace the anonymity of cities. He seized an opportunity to start an artistic and craftsman’s trade and took over a candle shop.

Jean-Marc Monbec 50 jaar, is sinds 2004 in La Clusaz gevestigd. Deze ambachtelijke waswerker en vervolgens Maître Artisan sinds november 2018 is een autodidact voor wie kaarsen een echte omschakeling vormen. Deze voormalige werknemer in de tertiaire sector is zelfstandige geworden in een ambachtelijke, artistieke activiteit. Als stedeling ontdekt hij een aantal jaar geleden La Clusaz en het dorpsleven, waarin menselijke relaties het anonieme leven in de stad vervangen. Het is een openbaring ... Vervolgens krijgt hij de gelegenheid om een kaarsenwinkel over te nemen en begint het verhaal.

En nu kunt u zelf uw eigen kaars maken!

EQUIPMENT REQUIRED

Plant based wax and a cotton wick (can be found in an arts and craft store). A recycled mould e.g. a milk carton cut in half or individual cake moulds. Short wooden sticks (kebab sticks for example). Two pans: a large one to do a Bain Marie and a smaller one.

BENODIGD MATERIAAL

A small quantity of vegetable oil. Plantaardige was en een gemonteerde katoenen lont (in een hobbywinkel). Gerecyclede vorm (bijvoorbeeld een afgeknipt melkpak) of kleine taartvormpjes. Klein houten stokje (een satéprikker bijvoorbeeld). Twee pannen: een grote voor een bainmarie en een kleinere. Een heel klein beetje plantaardige olie.

METHOD

Melt the wax in the Bain Marie. While the wax melts, lightly oil the chosen mould. Place the foot of the wick at the bottom of the mould and hold it straight by rolling it round the wooden stick. When the wax has melted, gently pour it into the mould. Regularly check that the wick stays in place at the bottom of the mould, if needed,

replace it with a wooden twig.

UITVOERING

De was au-bain-marie laten smelten. Ondertussen de gekozen vorm heel licht invetten. Zet de voet van de lont onder in de vorm en houd de lont recht door deze rond het stokje te draaien. Als de was gesmolten is, giet u de was langzaam in de vorm. Controleer regelmatig of de voet van de lont op zijn plaats onder in de vorm blijft, vervang deze indien nodig met een houten stokje.

ADVICES & TIPS

The slower you pour your wax, the better the candle, this avoids the withdrawal effect that often occurs around the wick. Leave your candle to cool for several hours until it has completely hardened. Remove the wooden stick and cut the wick to 1cm. Take the candle out of the mould.

Greasing your mould facilitates the removal from the mould. Your candle is ready!

For your candle to burn well, regularly trim the wick before relighting the candle (we recommend 1cm).

ADVIES EN TIPS

Hoe langzamer u de was opgiet, hoe mooier uw kaars wordt want u voorkomt zo de ‘krimpput’ die gewoonlijk rond de lont wordt gevormd. Laat uw kaars een paar uur afkoelen tot deze geheel gestold is. Verwijder het houten stokje, knip het lontje af op 1 cm. Haal uw kaars uit de vorm.

Dit zal eenvoudiger gaan als u de vorm hebt ingevet.

Uw kaars is klaar! Om de kaars gelijkmatig te laten branden, raden wij u aan om de lont regelmatig af te knippen voordat u deze weer aansteekt (aanbevolen lonthoogte: 1 cm).
