welcome to the winter / spring 2017 issue of wedluxe, the statement issue. I founded WedLuxe as a daughter of design. Eleven years ago (which truthfully feels like yesterday!), I saw a vacancy when it came to showcasing the marriage of external forms of design (interior, fashion, graphics, textiles, etc.) with weddings. It continues to be a joy to celebrate design in this way, and it’s amazing to see how the world of weddings continues to evolve as contributors and readers become more globally aware than ever, with social media erasing borders, resulting in new inspiration being served up by the second!

It’s an exciting time to be a design enthusiast, yet one thing remains true: there is nothing that makes a statement more than bold and beautiful patterns. This issue, we were inspired by prints, patterns, and collaborations between artists of differing genres and how these statement pieces and projects influence the luxury wedding industry. On page 86, our team explored pattern and light with Light Matters, photographing the latest patterned and textured bridal fashion at the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto, Ontario; a venue that in itself is a pure celebration of pattern, design, and architecture. For our In Full Bloom editorial (pg. 222), we worked with the iconic house of de Gournay (known also for their collaborations with Chanel and the Met Gala in past years) to bring hand-painted, Chinoiserie-style wallpaper to life in the form of stationery, wedding cakes, floral design, and bridal fashion. Starting on page 170, we showcase the brilliant work and statement concepts produced by our WedLuxe Glitterati Members. The five featured collaborations between florists, planners, stationers, photographers, and other luxury wedding professionals are a love letter to statement print and pattern, ranging from Majolica pottery to tropical vibes—one of the hottest trends in floral design right now—we’re seeing shades of green, green, green, and palm fronds, in spades! In this issue’s Real Weddings, our couples and their creative partners stopped at nothing to create memorable, statement-making events! From large-scale hanging installations, to vividly-hued floral design, these bold design choices resulted in standout events. For brides and grooms-to-be looking to make a STATEMENT on their wedding day by working with the very best that the local luxury wedding industry has to offer, you won’t want to miss the sixth annual WedLuxe Show, taking place in Toronto on Sunday, January 15th, 2017, hosted by The Carlu and presented in conjunction with our partners Oliver & Bonacini Events and Catering. ROUZHIN NARAM and

An Ode to Marie Antoinette’s “Enchanted Garden”

Rouzhin’s engagement ring was designed and purchased from westrock diamonds.

aram mansour first caught sight of rouzhin mehdizadeh in july 2005 at an orientation lunch at the schulich school of business. “i first noticed her smile and thought she was stunning,” says naram. a month later, during the school’s Frosh Week, Naram decided to approach Rouzhin with the excuse of discussing a school-related matter and soon they found themselves talking all night. It was another month before Naram made the bold move of asking Rouzhin for her MSN contact information and in October they went on their first official date. A decade-long relationship followed, before the couple were engaged.

A few days before Rouzhin’s birthday in 2015, Naram surprised her with lastminute plane tickets to Miami. One evening, while they were walking along the beach to dinner, Naram took her hand and pointed to a sand sculpture on the beach that had “She said Yes,” etched into it. Rouzhin thought that this was left from another couple’s proposal and carried on walking to their dinner, but Naram pulled her back and showed her that their initials were also etched into the sculpture. When she turned to look back at him, she found him down on one knee. “He was so nervous, it melted my heart,” shares Rouzhin, “I, of course, did say yes!” They ended the evening with a celebratory dinner of seafood and bubbly, toasting to their future. Rouzhin enlisted Laura Atendido of laura & co. events to provide full-service planning and design assistance and make their Marie Antoinette-themed wedding a reality. Rouzhin had long dreamed of her wedding and had always imagined an event that referenced Sophia Coppola’s 2006 film, but in an unexpected and fresh way. The unexpected element they decided upon was the concept of the “enchanted garden,” which would be realized through the extensive use of greenery throughout the decor, created by designer Rachel Clingen of rachel a. clingen wedding & event design.

The couple’s stationery was designed by Beckee Kavanagh of paper & poste. Beckee created a shimmery, blush invitation using thermographic printing that featured a border of white laser cut vines. The invitation and inserts were presented to guests in a box filled with real moss. The completed boxed invitation was tied with a sheer, blush ribbon featuring a die cut keyhole sticker and a vintage brass key. Rouzhin and Naram exchanged vows twice—their first vow exchange was held at st. paul’s basilica on July 30, 2016, with a Catholic ceremony representing Naram’s Chaldean Iraqi background. Following the Catholic ceremony, guests made their way to the art gallery of ontario (ago) where the second vow exchange took place with a Sofreh Aghd, in acknowledgement of Rouzhin’s Iranian roots, in a ceremony at the modern Walker Court.

The bride’s ines di santo gown was purchased at the designer’s boutique in Toronto. It was Rouzhin’s final appointment and she went in feeling slightly dejected, worried she would never experience that indescribable feeling when trying on the perfect gown. However, the moment she slipped on the lace ball gown, it was love at first sight. “There were tears everywhere,” says Rouzhin. Her tulle and French lace-embroidered veil was from padina bondar designs, who happens to be the bride’s cousin.

Bridesmaids wore dresses custom made by Padina Bondar Designs. schulz beauty provided hair styling services, creating milkmaid braids for the ladies. Their makeup was applied by May Nguyen of muah beauty.

The bride’s branchinspired headpiece, hair comb, and bracelet were custom made by blair nadeau millinery. Her earrings were from bhldn.

“Our Persian ceremony was very poetic, sentimental, and tied in my family’s traditions. It was very special to both of us,” reveals Rouzhin. bits and blooms inc. designed the Sofreh and Rouzhin’s mother contributed meaningful family pieces to the design, including the candelabras that were used at her wedding 35 years before. Bits and Blooms Inc. incorporated imported tiles from Iran and intricate food carvings into the design, while rachel a. clingen wedding & event design accented the table with lush florals.

After the ceremony, guests were able to enjoy treats from a vintage gelato truck courtesy of dolcella gelato. The truck was surrounded by boxwood hedging by rachel a. clingen wedding & event design to accent the area around the vehicle.

Persian tea and coffee from bargesabz farzad persian tea & food catering were on offer, with servers dressed in traditional attire.

Lexi McKenna of paper & poste designed the coupleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Sofreh ceremony programs that through custom illustrations outlined for guests the symbolic meaning of each item featured on the table.

A round bar from contemporary furniture rentals inc. was topped with floral by Rachel A. Clingen Wedding & Event Design and featured a monogram designed by paper & poste, which was produced by event graffiti. A lillet rose signature cocktail was offered to guests upon their arrival. An 8-ft tall escort wall was placed at the front of the reception venue featuring a boxwood hedge from landscape sculptures, which was decorated in a lattice design of blush ribbon by Laura & Co. Events, and accented in fresh, fragrant blooms by Rachel A. Clingen Wedding & Event Design. Paper & Poste designed the white laser cut escort cards pinned to the structure.

In the centre of the room, a canopy of greenery and hanging wisteria was suspended over the dance floor and decorated with five glittering crystal chandeliers from three design. “eventure custom environments and event draping was commissioned to line the room in a stunning three-dimensional room liner. White fabric spanned each wall, from floor to ceiling. Soft, pink silk panels were suspended in front of the drape line to create a dramatic effect,” says Laura Atendido of Laura & Co. Events.

All of the floral and decor installations were made possible by Alan Bisson and his team at firedog creative, who provided live event support services, including rigging, audio, visual, and lighting. The 12-ft long by 20-ft wide canopy took the team seven hours to construct!

GRAND DESIGN The couple’s 16-ft long head table featured greenery and pastel blooms. Behind the table stood a 6-ft tall boxwood hedge wall from landscape sculptures, topped with a garland of blush and lilac flowers by rachel a. clingen wedding & event design. Hanging above the table were seven crystal chandeliers from three design laden with trailing Italian Ruscus, completing the setting’s transformation into a lush, indoor garden.

Laura Atendido of laura & co. events worked with event graffiti to design a marble tiled dance floor that mimicked the tiled floor found in Marie Antoinette’s Petit Trianon, located on the grounds of Versailles. Low boxwood hedging from Landscape Sculptures was placed in white planters and framed the dance floor.

Guest tables were lined with low, coordinating florals in crystal bowls featuring roses, fluffy stock, and mixed greenery, along with floral trees. Breathtaking 4-ft long custom floral boxed chandeliers were suspended over tables, which allowed for unobstructed views and encouraged guests to mingle and truly admire the spectacular designs. Blush linens covered the tables and blue mum hemstitch napkins from around the table and gold Tiffany chairs from detailz couture event rentals completed the dreamy design.

Place settings captured a feeling of old-world opulence with gilded flatware and gold-rimmed stemware from chair-man mills, gold-rimmed chargers from detailz couture event rentals, and a dash of Marie Antoinette romance with lilac water goblets from plate occasions as well as Majestic China and Blue Marie salad plates from Chair-Man Mills. Attached to each guestâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s menu was a complimentary ticket to the ago for a return visit.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;We practiced our first dance in the art gallery before any of the guests came in and it felt like a dream to be amongst the hanging greenery, chandeliers, and candelabras all by ourselves,â&#x20AC;? shares Rouzhin. Guests were entertained by ballerinas from hit & run dance productions and an Iranian and Iraqi folk dance performance from Iana Komarnytska, paying homage to their roots.

Guests dined on a delectable Persian-inspired dinner catered by Chef Annick Le Goaix of the ago that featured a pistachio crusted lamb rack. Laura Gulshani painted the ceremony live and later in the evening, rendered fashion-inspired portraits of guests.

A lounge area featuring furniture from contemporary furniture rentals inc. served as the perfect spot for guests to pause for a moment, mingle, and relax.

Alexandria Pellegrino of cake opera co. created the couple’s opulent cake, inspired by Marie Antoinette and the infamous quote attributed to her, “Let them eat cake!” The six-tier powder blue confection featured carved gold painted accents, which included a gate that opened to an enclosure of sugar flowers. A macaron and a meringue tower flanked the main masterpiece, and all were placed atop a surface of decorative plaster moulding. This presentation was made complete with the 6-ft tall boxwood hedge backdrop that was accented with pink roses and custom decorative moulds from Cake Opera Co. Music during dinner was provided by DJ Milad from sole power. outside in studio was on hand to capture and commemorate the opulent event on video for the couple. The dance party was kicked off with music by percussionist Sahab Habibi and violinist Alireza Firoozi. “Having drums beat on the dance floor will always make the party go wild!” exclaims Rouzhin. A late-night buffet of wings, lobster mac and cheese, fried chicken on waffles, and maple sriracha glazed mini beef and cheese sliders was catered by the ago. Transportation services were provided by a celebrity limousine and a rolls choice. A week after the wedding, the couple jetted off to East Africa for a four-week safari adventure, where they visited the bushes of Tanzania and Kenya. From there, they ended their epic trip with a healthy dose of relaxing and scuba diving excursions in the Indian Ocean around the island of Zanzibar. “It was as if we walked into an issue of National Geographic and went on an expedition for a month; it was all so magical,” shares Rouzhin. The newlyweds reside in Toronto where Rouzhin is a marketing and brand manager and Naram is a real estate developer.

“Adventures in Wonderland”

lexandra golovenko and pavel zvonov first connected in august of 2006. although she describes herself as “quite traditional in most ways,” alexandra created an online dating profile that summer. after scrolling past a few undesirable candidates, she finally landed on Pavel’s profile. Alexandra was pleasantly surprised to see that everything he had written spoke to her and drew her to him; it was as if she had written his profile herself. Needless to say, she didn’t waste much time before initiating a conversation. Soon after, they agreed to meet at the art gallery of ontario (ago) to see the Andy Warhol exhibition and their online connection translated into a real-life romance. While on a trip in Havana, Cuba that coincided with Pavel’s 30th birthday, the couple visited the preserved set of their favourite film “Strawberry and Chocolate,” which has, since filming, turned into a restaurant named la guarida. In such a meaningful location that was so dear to them, it felt natural for Pavel to take the opportunity to ask Alexandra to be his wife. Without hesitation, she said “yes.” “It was magical!” she shares.

When the couple began the wedding planning process, they knew there was no theme better suited for their personalities than one based on Lewis Carroll’s “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.” As the owner of tableauscapes, a luxury boutique tabletop rental and styling company, Alexandra felt very passionate about perfecting each and every detail for the occasion, especially the decor design. white dove invitations, one of the bride’s companies, designed the couple’s “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland”-inspired invitations, which resembled an antique storybook and featured a die cut keyhole.

Prior to opening her own company, Alexandra had been a bridal consultant for nearly three years, and felt as if she had seen nearly every gown on the market. She was looking for something especially unique for her special day and after much research, she found herself drawn to Israeli gown designers and Inbal Dror in particular. “Inbal Dror’s balance of classic couture and modern, skin-hugging silhouettes won over my heart,” Alexandra shares. Finally, after months of tracking down the exact design she had in mind, Alexandra had the opportunity to try on the gown. “When I stepped out of the fitting room, and my gaze met my reflection, I was short of breath. It was absolutely stunning,” she says. To achieve the perfect fit, she contacted the designer directly, and they met at her studio in Israel to customize the gown in a way that would flatter Alexandra and add an extra touch of old-world elegance. Together, they added a shorter, detachable train, cap sleeves, and a lace-covered back with buttons. “The final product was classic, elegant, ethereal, romantic, and oh-so-me!” she exclaims. Taking advantage of her collection of antique lace and tulle, the bride designed her veil herself. “It turned out even better than I imagined,” she shares.

The couple had eloped in Havana, Cuba in January 2016, so their wedding on June 10, 2016, at graydon hall manor was an especially symbolic event for their family and friends.

The couple’s welcome table featured an “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” pop-up book for guests to sign.

Following the ceremony, a cocktail reception was held in the courtyard, where games such as Jenga, bocce ball, and flamingo croquet were set up in the rear of the garden for guests to enjoy.

WHIMSICAL WONDERLAND An al fresco dinner was held on the patio overlooking the picturesque grounds of graydon hall manor. Tables were covered in blush linens from around the table with a lace overlay from ettridges the studio luxury wedding & event designers. Sèvres-inspired charger plates, gilded Oneida flatware, goldrimmed glasses, and hemstitched napkins from tableauscapes completed each place setting. Every reception table was decorated with an extraordinary centrepiece that represented a character from “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland,”

including the Cheshire Cat and the White Rabbit. Alexandra custom designed and commissioned each figurine from various Russian and Ukrainian doll makers. Each character was encased in a large glass dome, which was encircled by a wreath of foliage and blooms for a finishing touch. “Our guests marvelled at these extraordinary designs while they enjoyed their meals,” says Alexandra. “They really made the wedding unique and thematic.”

The seating chart was designed and produced by white dove invitations and featured gold foil on pearlescent paper.

lisa roberts cakes designed the spectacular twotier cake decorated with gilded filigree details and a delicate scalloped trim. A cartouche emblem featuring a floral image transfer taken from an 18th century Haviland Limoges plate accented the top tier and a spectacular array of sugar flowers cascaded out of the tilted teacup topper and down the side of the cake. “In designing the cake I could finally realize my love affair with Marie Antoinette. It took four months to find the perfect hand-painted teacup for the cake topper, but the end result was well worth it!” Alexandra shares with us. Surrounding the cake was a spread of cupcakes presented inside vintage teacups, each topped with an elaborate sugar flower and a small label that read “Eat Me,” echoing the classic labels in “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.” The focal point of the reception was undoubtedly the dessert table, which featured a spread of tarts, petit fours, gold sprinkled eclairs, macarons, chocolatecovered strawberries, creme brûlée cups, and traditional Russian slices of Napoleon cake prepared by couture cuisine & event artistry. The table, a Provence-inspired piece from luxe modern rentals inc., was flanked by a seating nook with French Provence sofas and benches from contemporary furniture rentals inc. This location quickly became the hub of the event, with guests converging in the area, mingling and sampling the sweet delicacies. Alexandra and Pavel intend on honeymooning in France and Italy where they plan on visiting Paris, the Loire Valley, Venice, and Florence for the ultimate romantic escape. A Spectacular Spring Wedding

or janelle wood and aaron rowlatt, it was love at first swipe. despite matching on the fast-paced app tinder at the start of the summer of 2014, the pair took their time getting to know one another. janelle admits she initially played “a little hard to get,” but by the time the summer came to a close, it became clear that they were both in it for the long haul. A year later, with Janelle’s father’s blessing, Aaron was prepared to propose to Janelle. A typical weekend jaunt to the cottage took a romantic turn when one evening while standing on the dock, after a boat ride and just as the sun was setting, Aaron asked Janelle to be his wife. Caught completely off guard, Janelle emphatically said “yes!” When they returned back to the cottage, the newly engaged pair shared their happy news with Janelle’s family and immediately popped a vintage bottle of Veuve Clicquot to celebrate. Festivities continued the next day, with Janelle’s Great Uncle taking the couple out on an antique “putt-putt” boat that had once belonged to Janelle’s Great-Grandfather. “Everyone cheered as we toured around our Bay. It was a spectacular weekend and I will never forget it!” remembers Janelle.

The wedding took place on April 16, 2016 in Toronto, Ontario. Lisa Garofalo of bliss toronto inc. provided same-day event coordination. “Although we only hired her for same-day coordination, she was involved way before that. She made sure the day ran smoothly,” shares the bride, who eagerly took on the task of planning her own wedding, and enjoyed every moment of the process. “Aaron was really involved in the whole process and my mother, Cindy, helped me with many details. It was so much fun!” rachel a. clingen wedding & event design provided all of the floral and decor designs for the wedding, including Janelle’s fragrant bouquet of white ranunculus, cream roses, orchids, and freesia.

Janelle’s Malis-Henderson hair comb, Maria Elena bracelet, MM Crystal earrings, and necklace were all purchased from kleinfeld hudson’s bay. A vintage purse belonging to her maternal grandmother served as her “something borrowed.” The purse held added meaning as it had been carried by her grandmother at Janelle’s parents’ wedding.

Aaron’s cufflinks and bow tie were from harry rosen, and his pocket square was from t.m. lewin. Janelle gifted Aaron with an engraved Raymond Weil watch prior to the wedding.

The monogram was featured as a design and decor element throughout the wedding. Janelle’s ines di santo wedding gown featured a hidden sentimental detail, in honour of the close relationship shared between the bride and her mother. A square piece of lace from the train of Janelle’s mother’s wedding gown was sewn into the dress by a dear family friend, along with the letters “J” and “A.” Although not visible from the outside of the dress, Janelle and her mom both knew the detail was there.

CEREMONY HIGH NOTES The couple was married at grace church on-the-hill where they exchanged “tried, tested, and true vows.” Floral arrangements by rachel a. clingen wedding & event design were affixed to the church pews with cascading ribbon. Oversized arrangements of magnolia, roses, hydrangea, and greenery displayed in tall, white lacquer vessels flanked the altar.

Music played an important role in the ceremony. “Your Song” was played in honour of Janelle and her mom’s favourite singer Elton John, after which Janelle walked down the aisle with her father to “Trumpet Voluntary” by Purcell—the same song that was played when her mother walked down the aisle 34 years ago.

A MODERN ODE TO SPRING For the reception, rachel a. clingen wedding & event design created a spring-inspired, modern-meets-romantic setting using hues of blush pink and white, accented with graphic pops of black. The focal point of the room was a grand magnolia canopy, underneath which sat the couple’s sweetheart table. “It was truly a show stopper,” says Janelle.

The intimate table for two—a white round wood table from contemporary furniture rentals inc.—was surrounded by stunning flower arrangements displayed in various vessels including a set of four tall white flower boxes filled with mounds of fragrant fresh blooms. The front of each flower box featured a thin black geometric trim, adding a modern graphic detail to the soft, feminine space.

A SWEET SENDOFF

bobbette & belle created a five-tier white and silver wedding cake decorated with sugar magnolia flowers, hand-painted sequins, and a ruffled bottom tier.

The live event band saturday night jive truly brought the party to life. At one point in the night, nearly all 315 of the guests were on the dance floor celebrating with the newlyweds. When “You Make Me Want to Shout” by Little Richard came on, some of the couple’s friends hoisted the couple up in the air on their shoulders. “I could not stop smiling,” remembers Janelle.

Guests were presented with a jar of homemade tomato sauce, produced by the bride’s family according to a traditional recipe. The tasty takeaway was inspired by the family’s tradition of gathering together every September to make enough sauce for the entire year! The jars featured a custom label designed by paper & poste.

For their honeymoon, Janelle and Aaron spent two weeks traveling across Italy’s Amalfi Coast and the French Riviera—describing it as “the best, most fantastic vacation, ever!” The couple had the time of their lives eating and drinking the best food and wine while celebrating their newlywed status. The couple resides in Toronto where Janelle is an elementary school teacher and Aaron is an investment advisor and equity trader.

A “Vibrant Summer Garden” Wedding for a Style-Savvy Couple

little traditional matchmaking brought emily hazan and mikki levy together in december of 2010. mikki’s mother, emily’s then boss, decided to play cupid and set her son up with Emily. While Mikki was away in Australia, Mikki’s mother set the groundwork by raving about Emily’s wonderful qualities, all while doing the same to Emily about Mikki. A year later, when Mikki came home, the pair finally had the chance to connect in person. “When we met, I felt like I already knew him. In fact, I may have already been in love with him,” recalls Emily fondly. In 2015, Mikki asked Emily to help his mother plan a surprise birthday party for his father, and she happily helped plan what she thought would be a beautiful event for him. When she and Mikki arrived at the party that day, the home was oddly quiet, and Emily immediately went into party-planning mode and panicked thinking nothing had been properly prepared. To assuage her, Mikki suggested they venture out to the backyard to see the decorations and as they walked outside Mikki led her to the birthday cake that was supposed to be for his father. “My heart sunk when I saw the cake,” says Emily. Instead of the hockey-themed cake they had selected, she saw a heart shaped cake with Mickey Mouse proposing to Minnie Mouse. When she turned to look at Mikki, she saw him down on one knee, holding a ring. The party had all been for her, a clever ruse for Mikki to propose!

As an art director and graphic designer, Emily felt it would be natural for her to design their invitations, which were then produced by the write invite. She opted for a circular shaped design with a letter pressed floral border that featured their names printed in rose gold. The invitations were then sent in soft, shimmery pink envelopes with custom stamps.

The theme of the wedding was a “Vibrant Summer Garden” with romantic and delicate touches. “I didn’t want another average wedding, I wanted something wow-worthy!” says Emily. She worked with Sarah Cherry of cherry & baker event specialists for the occasion, who provided full-service planning and design assistance.

CELEBRATION OF STYLE

The fashion-forward couple took great care to select pieces that really embodied their personal style and made a statement. Emily selected a glamorous gown featuring subtle lace detailing and a veil by Israeli designer Tal Kahlon. She completed her ethereal look with a delicate, floral headpiece designed by Efrat Cassouto. Brad Smith of nous design group designed the floral for the wedding, including Emily’s romantic bouquet which consisted of hundreds of exquisite wire cymbidium orchid petals assembled together to create one massive flower. It took more than three hours to create the arrangement!

BLUSH-HUED WEDDED BLISS Emily and Mikki wed on August 21, 2016, at château le parc event centre. The couple’s outdoor ceremony was punctuated by songs Emily had carefully selected that were, as she describes them, “extremely untraditional.” She even walked down the Italian Ruscus and wild Smilax-lined aisle to a version of Beyoncé’s “Crazy in Love.” The couple’s garden-inspired chuppah was draped in blush linens with scaling Mandavilla vine and white and blushhued roses. To add to the soft, romantic feel of the ceremony, guests were seated on light pink Chiavari chairs from detailz couture event rentals that glistened when the light hit them.

The celebration continued inside chĂ˘teau le parc event centre, where the reception was held. Guest tables were decorated with tall centrepieces composed of greenery and blooms in vibrant, summer hues sitting atop pewter vases or candelabras wrapped in scaling vines. Small vessels filled with bright roses, lisianthus, and azaleas offered additional bursts of colour to the rich green arrangements.

GREEN GALA With so much colour used in the centrepieces, Brad from nous design group opted to create a spectacular white and green floral design for the couple’s head table. An 8-ft tall canopy of greenery and hanging wisteria was constructed over the table with wood stems supporting the extravagant design. Garlands of vines

were strewn across the cream linens, further enhancing the organic, woodland feel of the design. “It was ridiculously beautiful, the team at Nous Design Group brought my vision to life,” says Emily.

Guests were treated to mango sorbet served in lime-rimmed glasses and raspberry sorbet in citrus and coconut-rimmed glasses prepared by Raphy Amar of beverly hills catering who catered the wedding meal. 139

Hans Von Rosenberg of the park hyatt designed the couple’s three-tier grey ombré wedding cake with large molded chocolate pieces. “I loved the abstract, untraditional, raw look of the design,” shares Emily. The first tier featured a madagascar vanilla base with a turtle cake filling with caramel and candied pecans, the second tier’s base was made of crushed hazelnut with a crème brûlée cake with caramel filling, and topped off with a third tier of a Callebaut chocolate base and divine red velvet and fig filling. magen boys entertainment provided a DJ, Israeli singer, and soft, ambient lighting for the reception. In addition to the DJ, a 15 piece band from the toronto symphony orchestra entertained guests throughout the evening. The couple followed the wedding with an idyllic 17 day-long honeymoon vacationing in Rome, Mykonos, and Santorini.

Emily changed into a second Tal Kahlon gown for the end of the night celebrations.

After three years of dating, Robert popped the question when the couple was visiting the romantic island of St. Martin. Shortly after they got engaged, the bride began imagining an elegant, romantic wedding with a white and metallic colour palette. Marisa enlisted Shealyn Angus of shealyn angus weddings & events to execute her dream. “Shealyn was amazing. She took my vision from just a thought and made it a reality,” says Marisa. The couple exchanged vows on June 25, 2016, at st. james’ cathedral in a traditional Catholic ceremony. Opera singer Michael Ciufo performed a rendition of Ave Maria during the signing of the register. “With the beautiful church organ music playing in the background, we got goosebumps! The reception was held at the ritz-carlton, toronto. Upon entering the Grand Foyer for cocktail hour, the guests were met with a show-stopping white floral tunnel designed by rachel a. clingen wedding & event design. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Nobody had ever seen anything like it!â&#x20AC;? shares Marisa. The tunnel was 12-ft tall and 12-ft long and took Rachel and her team over eight hours to construct, as every element needed to be assembled on site. White cherry blossom branches and hundreds of white wisteria stems were used in the design. Over 500 fresh, white long-stem roses were suspended from the ceiling of the canopy and used to embellish the sides of the ethereal structure.

Electric violinist Dr. Draw entertained guests when DJ Floh Back wasn’t spinning music that had everyone tearing up the dance floor late into the night. After the celebration, the couple travelled to Bora Bora, staying at the st. regis bora bora resort before moving over to the four seasons resort bora bora. “We couldn’t decide which one to stay at, so we just did both!” says Marisa.

An All-White Wedding Filled with Cherry Blossoms and Pops of Peonies

ara bank and jordan tannenbaum were brought into each other’s lives on may 25, 2010, on jordan’s 20th birthday. although Jordan had long been a good friend of Sara’s sister, he and Sara had never crossed paths before. Sara attended the birthday celebration with her sister and she and Jordan quickly hit it off and spent the entire evening together. Five years later, in Trinity Bellwoods Park, on a quiet fall day after a quick stop to pick up coffee and macarons from nadège patisserie, Jordan asked Sara to be his wife.

Sara and Jordan were wed on June 26, 2016, at the fairmont royal york in a celebration that resembled a modern daydream. Sara enlisted Melissa Baum of melissa baum events to provide fullservice planning and design assistance for the event. “She planned and executed the most spectacular wedding, which completely exceeded our expectations, and we were so grateful to her,” shares Sara. “From the beginning, she made us feel like family rather than clients.” Having to plan an event for 350 people was no easy feat, but with Melissa’s help, they were able to create a wedding that celebrated Sara’s love of flowers and floral patterns, all grounded in a colour palette of dove grey, ivory, blush, and rose gold.

palettera custom correspondences designed the couple’s invitations, which when opened resembled a blooming flower. They featured a custom illustrated, blind debossed, floral pattern inspired by Sara’s gown.

Fiona Liston of stemz provided all of the floral designs for the wedding, including Sara’s soft bouquet of blush peonies, her favorite flower, with small groupings of delicate pink sweet peas. Her engagement ring was custom made by Edan Twena of edan diamonds and her pink quilted Miu Miu clutch was purchased from holt renfrew. Her Jimmy Choo heels were from saks fifth avenue in Toronto.

The bride wore a Monique Lhuillier gown from white toronto paired with David Yurman pearl drop and diamond earrings from Holt Renfrew.

Cherry blossoms were featured prominently in the design of the wedding.

Bridesmaids were outfitted in blush-hued gowns of their choosing from White Toronto, kleinfeld hudson’s bay, and Saks Fifth Avenue in Boston. Sara’s sister (and maid of honour) wore an Amsale gown with a crystal belt from White Toronto. They all carried petite bouquets of white peonies.

It was modern and romantic and looked so grand and beautiful in the ballroom.”–sara AN ETHEREAL CEREMONY The couple exchanged their vows in the ballroom of the fairmont royal york beneath an ethereal chuppah designed by Stemz, which was constructed using thousands of cherry blossoms and branches that complemented the curved, oplulent ceiling. Tall lucite pedestals filled with pillar candles and roses lined the white carpeted aisle from reznick carpets, leading to the grand structure. The

ceremony began with an instrumental rendition of Dave Matthews Band’s “You and Me” and as Sara walked down the aisle towards Jordan, Marla Joy Cohen of sole power sang Josh Groban’s “You Raise Me Up,” inciting goosebumps in everyone in attendance. “Walking down the romantic aisle to my handsome, soonto-be husband was a moment I’ll never forget,” recalls Sara.

WHITE WONDERLAND

Following the ceremony, guests were ushered into the Concert Hall of the fairmont royal york where they were welcomed by a white cherry blossom oasis. The windows of the space were covered with custom made window treatments by stemz, who also provided decor design services. Tables alternated between towering white arrangements of cherry blossoms and low peony, garden rose, and sweet pea-filled centrepieces. sole power provided lighting for the event to achieve the warm, enchanting ambiance Sara and Jordan had in mind. Glowing candles of varying heights were placed on dining tables in between centrepieces to create a dramatic floral runner effect. To incorporate a subtle, glittering pop of metallic, rose gold votives from Stemz were also integrated into the table design.

A life-size pink cherry blossom tree greeted guests as they walked into the reception. A mirrored table from detailz couture event rentals displayed place cards designed by Palettera Custom Correspondences.

Tables were covered in pleated silk linens from have a seat inc. and guests were seated on white Grace chairs from Detailz Couture Event Rentals. paleterra custom correspondences designed the coupleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sleek dance floor showcasing their monogram and a floral pattern, which was then produced and installed by event graffiti.

As Jordan is a cocktail aficionado, it was only natural for the couple to enlist specialty bartender Kyle Hillman from clocktower bar to create and serve four signature cocktails for the occasion.

Crystal cut chargers from chair-man mills completed the place settings and were chosen specifically as not to compete with the rest of the show-stopping decor.

Dessert was a top priority for Sara. She selected Christina Wong of truffle cake & pastry to design a five-tier ivory cake with textured floral embroidery, clusters of blush sugar peonies, and a double band of brushed gold fondant around the bottom tier. In addition to the cake, Christina also created a 12-ft long colour-coordinated sweet table with miniature doughnuts, cupcakes, macaron towers, and so much more. “It was almost too beautiful to eat and somehow tasted even better than it looked!” says Sara.

The fairmont royal york provided a delectable catered meal for the event of beef tenderloin, arctic char, and vegetable strudel, which was topped off with an indulgent late-night delivery of mcdonalds. The evening culminated in a dance party with music from sole power. big ticket productions was on hand to capture the momentous day on film for the newlyweds. The evening after their wedding, the couple embarked on their California honeymoon, first flying to San Francisco, from where they drove a Mustang convertible to Napa Valley, ending their trip with a tour through the historic wineries of the region. The pair resides in Toronto where Sara is a preschool teacher and Jordan is an investment banker.

Ballet slippers from etsy were provided for guests who wanted to change into dancing-friendly shoes.

The wedding meal ended with a dessert trio created by the Fairmont Royal York.

arina alexandra saltsov and pavel shteyn were introduced to one another through mutual friends in 2010, but it seemed to everyone that they did not take an instant liking to one another. Little did Marina know, Pavel had actually long-harboured a secret crush on her. She was often off the market, so it was some time before the stars aligned and he finally had the chance to ask her on a date. After a whirlwind two-monthlong courtship, Pavel was certain that Marina was the woman he wanted to spend the rest of his life with. He whisked her away to New York and while in her favourite city, feeling on top of the world, he popped the question on top of the Empire State Building!

In addition to being a family friend of the groom’s, Anya Bortnik of la chic soirée was familiar to Marina for her talent as a wedding and event planner and was hired to provide full-service planning and styling for the couple’s wedding. “It was very important for me to work with someone who would understand my vision and style,” shares Marina. Having been greatly influenced by the striking colour palette of Victoria and David Beckham’s unconventional wedding, Marina knew Anya was the right person to entrust with her modern interpretation of a regal-meets-Tuscan-inspired wedding.

The wedding’s regal theme was discernible from the outset, with guests receiving invitations designed by esco invitations that were placed in intricate, gold laser cut sleeves.

Marina and Pavel were married on August 14, 2016, at bellvue manor in a traditional Jewish ceremony. The aisle was lined with gold, mirrored pedestals, topped with tall, textured centrepieces filled with greenery, bold-hued blooms, and the unexpected addition of red apples.

Sarah Goncalves of precious flowers n’ things created the bold floral designs for the wedding, including Marina’s bouquet of red roses, black ranunculus, black calla lilies, and red amaranthus, accented with gold brooches.

Upon entering the reception, guests were welcomed with an expansive gilded mirror from Precious Flowers N’ Things dressed in a garland of bold blooms that showcased guests’ seating in calligraphy by impresa events inc. 161

Guests were seated at tables covered in gold pleated linens from have a seat inc. Tall centrepieces filled with red apples, purple and red hydrangea, Italian Ruscus, and hanging red amaranthus, left sight lines undisturbed, while maintaining the dramatic floral impact.

Guests were seated on matte gold Chiavari chairs from detailz couture event rentals.

To further enhance the sense of intimacy at the coupleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sweetheart table, enzo mercuri designs added floor-to-ceiling draping and designed an asymmetrical 3D backdrop behind the coupleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s glittering mirrored head table and white Swarovski chairs from Detailz Couture Event Rentals. This dramatic setting was embellished with three suspended crystal chandeliers and a blanket of purple hydrangea, orange garden roses, red amaranthus, trailing Italian Ruscus, and accented with apples, echoing the feel of an Italian palace-like setting.

A waterfall of sugar flowers in the couple’s chosen colour palette adorned their wedding cake created by Fine Cakes by Zehra. Hidden inside the delectable masterpiece was a Ferrero Rocher chocolate crisp and raspberry white chocolate crisp filling.

To satisfy guests’ sugar cravings, fine cakes by zehra and dessert trends bakery designed confections for an extensive sweet spread.

The undisputed highlight of the evening was when the newlyweds took to the floor for their first dance to Robbie Williams’ “Angels.” “We had rehearsed it in a matter of three hours, only two days before the wedding day…and nailed it!” exclaims Marina. There was no denying that guests were left with a lasting memory of the dramatic and elegant affair. elle & be films produced the couple’s wedding video and A DJ from vamos events kept guests dancing all night long. After taking some time to enjoy wedded bliss, the couple travelled to Italy for the honeymoon of a lifetime.
