E D I TO R’ S L ET T E R

WELCOME TO THE MAY WEDLUXE GLOBAL TREND REPORT!

Having just returned from an inspiring trip to the United Kingdom to shoot an editorial for our next issue, we’re more inspired than ever to show you the latest exciting developments in bridal fashion, wedding design, luxury travel and decor from around the world. I also couldn’t be more thrilled to announce that the theme of our next print issue (on newsstands next month!) is the VANGUARD issue. While we’re busy producing what we believe will be our best (and biggest!) issue yet, we invite you to check out page 8 for a taste of what you can expect. For instance, Minneapolis-based Gretchen Culver of Rocket Science Weddings & Events found vanguard inspiration in famed painter Francis Bacon’s “1946” painting. While Bacon’s work is often seen as distressing and, at times, disturbing, Gretchen saw beauty in darkness, and brought a styled shoot to life that avant-garde brides and grooms will adore. Flower lovers won’t want to miss the rose and gloriosa-filled engagement party at Toronto’s Ritz Carlton Hotel on page 38. It only makes sense that a floral spectacle of this nature was self-designed by a florist whose true passion for her craft is evident in her own engagement celebration. Read more about Michelle Tran and her new business, Fleurité in this feature. Israeli designer Nurit Hen was the first designer to grace the cover of our inaugural WedLuxe Global Trend Report last July. This year, her Royal Couture collection for 2016 has stunned us yet again, with cutting edge gowns that truly stand out from what is often seen in bridal fashion at the moment. You can see more of this beautiful collection, as well as stunning lookbooks from Berta Bridal, newcomer Lurelly and more, starting on page 44. Is there a wedding industry Vanguard whose work we need to see? A bridal event you need an outfit styled for? A luxury property you’re booking a flight to visit? We want to know what you’re obsessing over. Who knows, you might just see it in our next issue!

Creatively produced by Gretchen Culver of Rocket Science Weddings and Events

BEAUTY IN THE DARKNESS PHOTOGRAPHED BY CADENCE & ELI

A painting like Francis Bacon’s “1946” is not your typical source of conventional wedding inspiration. While the great artist’s works typically touch on themes of anguish and distress, and are what some would call disturbing in nature, this did not stop Gretchen Culver of Rocket Science Weddings and Events from finding beauty in the darkness. As Gretchen, the creative designer of this styled shoot said, “it is easy to use beautiful art to inspire beautiful design. I wanted to flex my creative muscle.” And flex this muscle, she did. This season at WedLuxe, we’ve been ruminating on the concept of taking an unconventional icon and finding inspiration in their influence. This shoot is the perfect opportunity for us to reveal the theme of our upcoming Spring/Fall 2016 Issue, the Vanguard Issue! Hitting newsstands next month, prepare to be wowed by what we’re calling our best issue yet! With styled shoots inspired by unconventional influencers and bridal fashion editorials like you’ve never seen, this isn’t an issue you’ll want to miss.

Tell us about your interest in flowers — where did it begin?

What are some of your favourite flowers to work with?

Both my mother and my grandmother are gardeners, and I grew up surrounded by flowers. Even now when I come across flowers like chrysanthemums, the scent brings me back to the time I used to gather them with my grandma and dry them to make tea. I eventually took a floral course at the Canadian Institute on Floral Design, where I became passionate about the subject matter, arriving to class early every day and collecting pictures of all my work. That is where it all began.

I find that for events, I have been using Gloriosa quite often. I also work a lot with roses, as I love the many varieties of them. It is amazing how one type of flower can open in so many different ways, come in so many different scents, and have different petal shapes, sizes and colours. All flowers are so beautiful in their own individual way, I can’t really say I have a true favourite.

D ES I G N S POT L I G H T

Who inspires you?

Of course, my children inspire me the most. As adults, we often worry so much that we make a situation more difficult than it truly is. My kids remind me that sometimes things are quite simple. There are many hard-working and inspiring women who I have met recently who have been huge influences in my life. Christina Matteucci, Sarah Haywood, and Marcy Blum are all strong businesswomen who manage to be caring, nurturing and funny too! Another person whose drive and determination inspires me is Jarvis Lawhorn, who I met at Engage! in Orlando. I believe he is going to be a big name in the event industry one day. I have been very blessed to come across all these people in recent years.

If you were a flower, which one would you be and why?

If I was a flower, I would be a Gloriosa. I would like to be thought of as delicate and elegant, but statement-making. To me, a Gloriosa epitomizes all of this. I am actually a certified etiquette instructor, and like my favourite flower, I like to appear refined, yet push boundaries through my fashion sense. What is your hope for the future of Fleurité?

I would like to take my floral designs to an international level. I would like to create a bespoke experience for my clients. It is a true blessing that I get to work with beautiful flowers everyday, and I appreciate every moment of it. I cannot wait to create incredible events for my clients.
