Hello Lovelies! Welcome to the Winter/Spring 2014 edition of WedLuxe Magazine—The Art Issue.

Vancouver & Western Canada Edition VOLUME 8, ISSUE 1, NUMBER 15

FOUNDER, EDITOR-IN-CHIEF, PUBLISHER

After more than a decade working within the wedding industry, it has never been more clear to me that as much as weddings are a wonderful and meaningful celebration of love, they have also become a legitimate art form made possible by the dedication and talent of an industry filled with true artists. With that in mind, this issue references art in all of its forms— photographic, painterly, illustrative, fashion, etc. With art in mind, I want to take this opportunity to invite you to join the staff of WedLuxe and I, along with over 125 of the esteemed WedLuxe Glitterati members to The WedLuxe Wedding Show, hosted by The Fairmont Royal York in Toronto, Ontario on January 5, 2014 from 9am to 6pm.

textbook

romance

The story of Nazanin and Pedro starts with a chemistry book. Nazanin had enrolled in an organic chemistry course and needed to purchase the required textbook. Pedro had completed the course in the past and had placed an ad to sell the above-mentioned textbook on a student website. After an email and a phone conversation, Nazanin and Pedro met in front of the Woodward Library at the University of British Columbia and the book was sold. Pedro was unable to forget the short interaction he had with Nazanin. He began to contact her, resorting to any excuse he could find in hopes of seeing her again. After several months of text messages and random encounters on campus, the pair finally went for lunch and have been together ever since. a n i m at e d

proposal

Pedro orchestrated a very creative proposal! He commissioned a cartoonist to create an animated cartoon of a little boy and little girl that represented himself and Nazanin. The story plot included key moments of their relationship—how they met, their first kiss, and the many memorable moments they experienced over the years. The plot evolved to the present day, with the little boy and little girl on a couch watching a cartoon. At this point, Pedro (who was sitting on a couch with Nazanin) paused the cartoon and proposed. Nazanin said, ‘Yes, of course!’ After the proposal, Pedro and Nazanin headed off for dinner. As they descended from their condo into the lobby, they heard music playing from the building’s party room and Pedro suggested they explore the noise. When they entered, the room was filled with their families and closest friends awaiting the newly engaged couple.

The couple’s classic cream and black wedding stationery was a design from WILLIAM ARTHUR, purchased online. The design reminded Nazanin of the hand-carved mouldings in the Spanish Ballroom at the ROSEWOOD HOTEL GEORGIA where their reception took place.

planning

The couple were married at the ROSEWOOD HOTEL GEORGIA on June 1, 2013. Victoria Hart from STYLE SOCIAL EVENTS was hired to provide partial-planning for the event. fashion

Nazanin wore a Pronovias gown from CLARA COUTURE. “I’ve always wanted a big, princess gown, but finding the wedding gown did not come easy,” says Nazanin of her gown-shopping process. “I tried on over fifty dresses before I found ‘the dress.’ I love flowers, and my dress is decorated with delicate floral appliqués that give the design a romantic look. I fell in love with it instantly.” She also wore a Pronovias belt with sparkling rhinestones and a two-piece veil which included both a blusher and a floor-length veil. Nazanin’s headpiece had a vintage crystal floral design and was purchased from a boutique in Paris. Her pink Valentino pumps were purchased from HOLT RENFREW. Her hair and makeup styling was done by HALEH TAFTEH. The bridesmaids wore pearl pink dresses from ALEXIA DESIGNS.

Nazanin’s bouquet by THE FLOWER FACTORY was a simple yet elegant arrangement of closed white peonies wrapped in ribbon and finished with a brooch. “I love white peonies and now every time I smell the flower it reminds me of our wedding day,” shares Nazanin. promenade

The couple had a Western ceremony followed by a traditional Persian ceremony in the Promenade area of the ROSEWOOD HOTEL GEORGIA. The Promenade and aisle were decorated with various floral arrangements on tall white pillars. The couple walked down a custom white aisle runner personalized with their wedding date and monogram. Nazanin’s mother designed an elegant and extravagant Sofreh (Persian wedding table) for the couple. “I really loved what my beautiful mother did with the Sofreh. This display was the result of one year of my mom’s continuous work and effort to create such an elegant and elaborate table setting for us.”

The couple commissioned Gloria Cheung of THE FLOWER FACTORY and Colin Upright of Upright Decor to design the floral and decor for their day. “The two of them created the allwhite fairy tale wedding that I had imagined,” says Nazanin. The couple’s reception was held in the Spanish Ballroom of the ROSEWOOD HOTEL GEORGIA where The Flower Factory and Upright Decor created a white wonderland inspired by Nazanin’s love of peonies and orchids. A long rectangular centre table was decorated with floral arrangements in tall fluted vases, accented with hanging crystals. The adjacent round tables were decorated with large crystal candelabras from Upright Decor topped with beautiful floral arrangements. “Hundreds of glowing crystal candles and candelabras created a romantic atmosphere as did the crystal Chiavari chairs,” says Nazanin.

chance

encounter

In May of 2012, Philip was seated alone at the bar of Vancouver’s Black+Blue steakhouse when Christene walked in with a girlfriend. “We made eye contact and smiled at each other, and this continued over the course of the evening,” recalls Christene. “My girlfriend and I were discussing being single in Vancouver and I commented that I had been smiling at a handsome man at the end of the bar all night. My friend gestured wildly to the man and gave him the thumbs-up to come over. He eventually made his way over, but he promptly left when his dessert arrived (he’s Belgian, I forgave him)!” “He gave me his card before leaving, and we texted the next day and decided to meet for dinner at the Hawksworth Restaurant in the ROSEWOOD HOTEL GEORGIA. We had our first kiss at the bar that night and haven’t been apart since. He gave me his keys three days later and we moved in together in August. We both knew 100% that this was different. I knew he was my guy—I didn’t know what it would lead to, but I knew it would be something very special.”

46

Winter and Spring 2014

venetian

proposal

In September of 2012, Philip proposed during a romantic gondola ride in Venice. Unbeknownst to Christene, he had asked her father for permission a few weeks beforehand and had told a few friends of his plans. Christene and Philip’s biggest priority for their June 1, 2013 wedding day was to keep the wedding intimate. “We were determined to keep our guest list small, and the details a secret! Our guests knew the wedding date and the requested attire—women all in white, men in black tuxedo and bow-tie, but no other details! When their invitation arrived they knew where to show up, but that was it.” fabulous

filosophi

Erin Bishop from FILOSOPHI EVENT PLANNING was hired to provide full-service planning and design for the wedding. The couple had come across Erin in a roundabout way, via a wedding Christene had attended a year earlier. That wedding featured an “amazing” band—SIDE ONE. Determined to book the band for her very own wedding, Christene sent an email to inquire.

WESTERN CANADA EDITION

As it turned out, Erin is not only a vocalist for SIDE ONE (and SAID SEBASTIAN) but she’s also a partner at FILOSOPHI EVENT PLANNING. “The minute we met Erin, it just clicked,” explains Christene. “Hiring Erin was the best decision we made regarding our wedding. We travel a lot, so we often had to rely on her flexibility and muscle to help us get things done.” Erin also loved working with Christene and Philip. “They are both very creative and visual people, so they had a vision for the wedding right off the bat when I met them. The challenge for me in this case wasn’t in coming up with creative ideas for their big day, but rather filling in the logistics and engineering their ideas into reality. The couple’s ideas were plentiful and where I was able to really shine was in the problem solving and engineering behind the scenes to bring their amazing visions to life. I am very proud of the feat that this wedding truly was, taking guests on a wild, through-the-looking-glass ride they won’t ever forget.”

fashion

notes

Christene wore a blush gown, called “Juliet” by Vera Wang. Extra fabric (blush organza and tulle) was ordered to incorporate into other wedding day details including Philip’s bow-tie and boutonnière. Christene was adorned with custom jewellery created by Elsa Corsi from JEWELIETTE JEWELLERY. Elsa also created a custom bracelet, earrings and a hairpiece with coloured Swarovski crystals. Christene’s sister served as her “best woman.” She wore a dress by Watters from FROCKS MODERN BRIDESMAIDS with jewellery by Elsa Corsi. Christene’s niece (and flower girl) wore a black tulle, balletstyle dress. The dress was accessorized with a thick sash made by Manuel Mendoza using tulle from VERA WANG. Philip wore a custom J.P. Tilford by Samuelsohn tuxedo from HARRY ROSEN. He also wore a custom bow-tie created by Manuel Mendoza that was constructed from black satin and the Vera Wang tulle that matched Christene’s dress. glorious

lion

The couple worked closely with Colleen Winton of FLOURISH to create their wedding invitations and stationery. The key graphic element was a lion—a design homage to Vancouver. “Philip lived in North Vancouver when we met, just a few blocks from where I was born in Lions Gate Hospital, so we spent a lot of time crossing my favourite bridge, the Lions Gate Bridge. Born here, the mountains known as ‘The Lions’ have always been magical to me, and we were getting married at the VANCOUVER ART GALLERY, the entrance of which is prominently bookended by two glorious lions. So, the lion became the symbol and key design element for our wedding,” explains Christene. “The lion that we came up with in our first meeting [with Colleen] was so pivotal to our wedding day that we are still incorporating him in our lives today!”

all

about

the

flowers

Erin Bishop worked with Evan Orion of FLOWERZ to design the floral and decor for the day. “Evan was amazing, period, ” notes Christene. Her bouquet was a large, round bouquet of bordeaux peonies and roses, loosely wrapped with a cloud of Vera Wang blush tulle.

pomp

and

ceremonies

On the wedding day, the couple had two ceremonies. The first (legal ceremony) was an intimate gathering with just five people, and took place on the roof of the Penthouse Suite at the ROSEWOOD HOTEL GEORGIA.

The remaining guests arrived at the hotel’s Reflections Outdoor Restaurant & Lounge for a champagne reception where they each had a polaroid photo taken for an art installation that would be revealed later in the day. During this time, Philip and Christene snuck away for a ‘blind’ photo shoot with each other in the art deco elevators of the hotel. “We were each in an elevator with the doors open, but couldn’t see each other. We snapped a polaroid there for a pivotal piece to add to the artwork later in the evening.”

Philip rejoined the party just as the couple’s nephews were handing out little invitation cards instructing guests to meet him in the lobby for next steps. “We thought it would take some time for everyone to finish their drinks and make their way down, but it was almost instant!” says Christene. Philip led the guests across Georgia Street and up the carpeted steps of the VANCOUVER ART GALLERY.

Once guests passed the (bow-tied) lion sculptures at the entrance, they were met with a white paper flower wall and huge bordeaux coloured floral arrangements. Four oversized images were hung in each of the four alcoves above the rotunda and dramatically uplit. They featured black and white prints of the couple, taken during their engagement photo shoot, and the couple’s lion emblem. The decor scheme of the second ceremony was black and white, which coincided remarkably well with an exhibit that was on display at the VANCOUVER ART GALLERY during the wedding. In the rotunda (where the ceremony took place), Evan Orion of FLOWERZ hung clouds of hydrangeas amongst the white hanging

To signal the start of the ceremony, the vocal group SAID SEBASTIAN (with wedding planner, Erin Bishop as a member) sang an acapella version of the song ‘My Heart With You’ by The Rescues as the couple’s family were escorted to their seats. The wedding party walked down the aisle to the song ‘Skinny Love,’ and the vocals of the song faded out as Christene’s dad walked her down the aisle. Laurie Barnes was the officiant. “Laurie was the girlfriend I was with the night I first met Philip. From the moment we first started talking about our wedding, Philip and I knew we wanted it to be more personal than an unknown officiant,” explains Christene. “It was also a secret that Laurie was marrying us.” After the ceremony, guests were led into the forecourt of the gallery for cocktail hour where passed canapés catered by SAVOURY CITY CATERING & EVENTS were served. One end of the space featured a large custom wall built by PROMOSA. The installation featured graphic frames that showcased guest names with descriptive words and stories pertaining to each person, as written by Christene and Philip. Two black frames were placed in the centre of the wall featuring

designs that Philip and Christene had created for each other. “During our elevator shoot we had FILOSOPHI EVENT PLANNING snap a photo of each of us separately and one in the elevators. The separate ones went up in our frames and the one of us together went up in an oversized frame with the quote ‘the sum of the whole is greater than the sum of the individual parts,’ which really sums up our relationship and our wedding, and our marriage so far!” The custom art installation was a conversation starter during the cocktail hour. When the newlyweds rejoined the party an hour later, Christene’s dad gave a toast, and referenced the ingenious and thoughtful display. The wall was then parted which allowed guests to walk through to the other side of the VANCOUVER ART GALLERY lobby, where the dinner reception took place.

One long and dramatic dining table was designed by Evan Orion of FLOWERZ with low bouquets of white peonies and hydrangeas along with Mercury glass candles spanning the length of the table. Hanging chandeliers were decorated with hydrangeas. The guests dressed in white (which included the female guests, plus the couple’s fathers’) sat along one side of the table while all the guests in black (the male guests, the couple’s mothers’ and Laurie) sat on the other side of the table. Each guest’s place setting (or one per couple) included a white frame containing a corresponding version of their individual wall design, along with their photo that was taken earlier in the day. The custom art pieces were finished during the cocktail hour by KIMPRINTS and were put in white boxes for guests to take home at the end of the night. The favors were sealed with a sticker featuring the couple’s monogram and lion emblem with ‘a great day for the pride’ printed below. Another graphic showstopper was the collection of Louis Ghost chairs that featured the lion emblem applied to the back of each chair. (The designs were printed on removable vinyl so they could be easily applied and removed). Evan Orion also created custom antique mirror top tables. Event planner Erin Bishop also took art that the couple owned and hung the pieces at one end of the room, so the space felt like an extension of their home. There were vignettes with small lamps and family photos in black and white frames which added to a “living room feel,” says Christene. “We also asked all of our nieces and Philip’s daughters to do an art piece that we placed on the walls during the wedding.” cakes

For dessert, guests were served a selection of custom cakes by Saskia Nollen and Heather White of ORIGINAL CUPCAKES BY HEATHER AND LORI. (Heather also happens to be the wife of the groom’s best man, Trevor!) “Serving the cakes was a highlight of the evening,” recalls Christene. “The women were all served a random assortment of cakes, a cake server and an extra plate. When we cut our cake, we had the women cut themselves off a piece and share the rest with the guest sitting across from them. This was quite the moment as many people ended up sharing with everyone around them to sample them all.” Christene and Philip enjoyed a small chocolate cake (a nod to Philip—the Belgian!) topped with a smaller coconut cake (for Christene).

Christy and Peter were both studying overseas (in England) when they met for the first time over dinner in 2008 while joined by a mutual friend. It was love at first sight for Peter, who asked Christy to join him at many more dinners over the next few months. “He consistently asked me out and told me our mutual friend would be coming as well, but it always ended up being just the two of us. He actually didn’t invite our mutual friend at all,” jokes Christy while recounting the early stages of their relationship. In June of 2012, the pair decided to embark on a holiday through Ireland. Lori Fraser of LORI L. FRASER SIGNATURE EVENTS provided full-service planning and design for Christy and Peter’s over-the-top wedding that unfolded on June 22, 2013. The day started at the PAN PACIFIC VANCOUVER with a ceremony, cocktails and lunch reception followed by a second cocktail hour, evening reception and opera performance at THE FAIRMONT WATERFRONT. Essentially, it was as if they had two complete weddings in one day! Under Lori’s skillful direction, the complex arrangements of the day were handled seamlessly. “Our goal was for the wedding to be of quality, and for our guests to enjoy the entire day from beginning to end,” says Christy.

special

day

Wendy and Ian were married on June 30, 2013 in Banff, Alberta; although they were forced to contemplate cancelling their entire wedding day only a few days before! The dramatic set of circumstances was brought on by one of the largest natural disasters to ever hit the province of Alberta. “It was the week right after the big flood in Calgary. Our wedding day was on the verge of cancellation due to road closures from Calgary to Banff. There was no alternative venue. We absolutely wanted our wedding to be held at THE FAIRMONT BANFF SPRINGS HOTEL and it was was an all or nothing deal. We were incredibly lucky that the roads reopened just a couple of days before our wedding and that all of our guests were able to travel to Banff. We were also very fortunate to have such beautiful sunny weather on our special day. Thankfully, everything worked out just as planned!” says Wendy. planning

venue

Wendy and Ian chose the renowned fairytale setting of THE FAIRMONT BANFF SPRINGS HOTEL for sentimental reasons. The pair— who visit the historic hotel during every Christmas season—had always imagined how wonderful it would be if they got married at the iconic property. “We share many happy memories there. When the time came to decide on the venue, there was no doubt in our minds that we both wanted to have our special day there.” With the magical mountainside location top of mind, it was very important to Wendy and Ian that their guests (who were coming from Vancouver, Northern BC, Edmonton and abroad) would enjoy a quintessential Rocky Mountain experience over the course of the wedding weekend. “We wanted to spend the weekend visiting with everyone, since we no longer live near our family and close friends.” Jennifer Bergman of JENNIFER BERGMAN provided same day co-ordination and design services for the occasion.

It truly felt like Ian and I were the only people in the room.” cake

The Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel created the couple’s wedding cake upon a last-minute request. The couple had originally booked with another cake company but that supplier was unable to deliver due to the flooding. “Despite the change and stress surrounding the cake, it turned out beautifully!” The cake consisted of three round tiers covered in ivory fondant with two whimsical bluebirds pulling at the ribbon on the top tier of the cake. The cake sat atop a “cloud” of baby’s breath. After a few fun-filled hours of celebrating and dancing—Wendy, Ian and their guests enjoyed a late night snack comprised of mini beef sliders, mini grilled cheese sandwiches (accompanied by tomato soup shooters) and mini cones of french fries. At the end of the evening, guests were gifted with packages of pink marshmallows from BUTTER BAKED GOODS. “We shipped these all the way from Vancouver because they’re one of our absolute favourite treats and they complemented the wedding so well—blush pink, and soft and airy.”

the

first

meeting

In the summer of 2009, Taryn was living in Portland and Greg was living in Texas. Their first meeting took place during a get-together with a mutual friend in Portland (whom Greg was visiting while on an extended work assignment in the Pacific Northwest.) “Greg felt a spark instantly and followed me around that evening. I had a feeling there was something there, but I didn't realize it until we met again a few weeks later in Seattle for 4th of July,” remembers Taryn. On the second meeting, they mutually knew there was something special between them but unfortunately Greg’s work project was done and he had to return home to Texas. In 2010, Greg followed his heart and moved to Portland to be with Taryn. engagement

Two years later, the couple began building a house together. One day, while on one of their frequent home site inspections, Taryn caught a glimpse of something not commonly seen at a construction site! “I noticed something off the back deck (of what is now our master bedroom)... a table, champagne and flowers,” she explains. “Startled, I turned around and Greg had gotten down on one knee and proposed. He succeeded in surprising me and making our first very special moment in our new house.” The couple chose Whistler, BC as the setting for their February 23, 2013 ‘destination wedding’ and worked with Roxanne Cave of CELEBRATE EVENTS who provided full-service planning and design services. Whistler has played an important role in Taryn’s life for over twenty years—she grew up spending Christmas holidays there at her family’s property. As a meteorologist she wanted a winter wedding in order to avoid rain. “Not that rain would have been bad, but we decided that one way to avoid it was to have a winter wedding,” she explains. “Having grown up going to Whistler and having so many special memories up there, Whistler was the natural choice for our special day.” i n v i tat io n s

The whole wintery romantic feel was further achieved by CELEBRATE EVENTS by using an abundance of candles and log seats. Roxanne Cave and her team from CELEBRATE EVENTS were instrumental in the design process of the wedding which originated from a wedding ‘brand book’ and creative vision board that Taryn and Greg shared in the early phases of planning. The ceremony—officiated by Darcy Reimer— took place just before sunset. “I remember standing outside with my dad waiting to go in and the sun was out,” recalls Taryn. “We walked into the building and I got my first look of the decor and it was amazing. The trees and flowers were so dramatic, I walked down the aisle and was so excited to see Greg. As our officiant spoke I noticed through all the windows in the room that the sun was going down. By the time we said our vows it was darker in the room with the candlelight creating a very intimate space. I often felt like it was just us standing there. It went by quicker than I expected and before I knew it— we were married!” “After we walked out we gathered with champagne just outside the room with all of our guests and my dad gave a toast. It was a very nice way to start the rest of the evening.”

ambience

Once at THE VANCOUVER CLUB, the string quartet from MUSICAL OCCASIONS also performed during the couple’s cocktail hour. In addition to floral design, Evan Orion of FLOWERZ provided full-service decor for the reception and cocktail hour spaces, described by Lindsay as “classic and elegant.” Large, tall centrepieces included hydrangeas, peonies, roses, and orchids. Circling the bottom of the centrepieces were small, short bouquets of white hydrangeas and candles. Tables were covered with silver linens and guests sat on silver Chiavari chairs with white cushions. The chairs at the couple’s large, rectangular head table were decorated with ruffled linens in shades of white, silver, and gray, accented with sparkling brooches. Table numbers were placed in mirrored frames and centrepieces sat on mirrored trays/coasters. The head table had a long “runner” of mirrors down the centre. Elegant white and black menus topped silver charger plates. Guests enjoyed a lavish meal catered by The Vancouver Club. cake

The couple had a five-tiered, white and gold wedding cake. “There were alternating layers of solid ivory with ivory and gold stripes. It was decorated with a train of white orchids down one side and candles around the bottom. The four bottom layers of the design were faux-cake and were purchased from Jenni Funk at SWEET RETREAT. Shobna Kannusamy of SOIRETTE MACARONS & TEA created the top layer of real cake that was made to match the faux base.

Day-of stationery included a seating table chart, name cards and menus by WINTONS SOCIAL STATIONERY to match the invitations.

DJ MARY MAC turned the wedding into a dance party after dinner. “She was great and so much fun.” The couple also provided their guests with the fun of a photo booth—from PHOTOBOOTH VANCOUVER—that printed out strips of photos with the couple’s names and wedding date at the bottom.

A donation was made to the MAKE-A-WISH FOUNDATION in lieu of favors. “The best part of planning our wedding was knowing we were putting together a beautiful day, and sharing a very special part of our life with our family and friends,” says Lindsay. honeymoon

The newlyweds honeymooned in French Polynesia where they enjoyed overwater bungalow accommodations in Tikehau (TIKEHAU PEARL BEACH RESORT), Moorea (HILTON MOOREA LAGOON RESORT & SPA), Bora Bora (HILTON BORA BORA NUI RESORT & SPA), and Vahine Island (VAHINE ISLAND PRIVATE ISLAND RESORT).

Vanessa wore two dresses, a white Vera Wang floor-length gown from BLUSH BRIDAL & SPECIAL OCCASIONS and a rose Valentino party dress (a gift from her mother) for both celebrations. She also wore a diamond tennis bracelet that was a wedding gift from her mother. Her makeup and hair was styled by Jayna Marie from JAYNA MARIE MAKEUP AND HAIR.

The bridesmaids wore coral and lace ‘cupcake-style’ cocktail dresses from TOPSHOP at THE BAY, along with Michael Kors and Gucci pumps. Scott wore a tuxedo by Tom Ford from HOLT RENFREW. floral

decor

Evan Orion of FLOWERZ designed the floral and decor for both wedding celebrations. He embellished the Owner Suite’s existing teak gazebo with copper-wire twinkle lights that almost disappeared into the wood. Gorgeous glass balls filled with luscious dahlias hung from above. He also placed floating glass balls filled with candles and flowers in the suite’s meditation pond. The decor also included floor-length crisp white linens, beautiful custom made green toile-inspired napkins and an incredible flower chandelier cascading with pink astilbe. christmas

event

A week later, on July 20, 2013, Vanessa and Scott hosted part two of their wedding celebration with a “friends only” dinner reception in the The York Room at Hawksworth Restaurant in the ROSEWOOD HOTEL GEORGIA. The only family in attendance were siblings and a couple of cousins. Hand-delivered dinner reception invitations (presented in silk gold boxes) were created by PAPIER BY JUDY and were filled with coral and aqua-coloured French macarons with gold leaf accents, created by Paulin Calot of GOURMAND MACARON & PASTRIES. The invite itself was gold foil accented and sat atop the macarons. Upon arrival to Hawksworth Restaurant, guests were served two custom cocktails— “The Airmail” and “The Princess Grace.”

The dinner reception was French-themed— loosely based on a Marie Antoinette editorial the couple had referenced from a past issue of WEDLUXE. Floral and event designer Evan Orion of FLOWERZ used a mix of peach and cream roses, hydrangeas, lisianthus, stock, and dahlias to bring the vision to life. Round tables were topped with custom-made gold, aqua, and peach tapestry-style overlays set atop floor length faux silk turquoise shimmer linens. The tables were also adorned with a collection of gold candelabras and candleholders, and bright aquamarine coloured napkins from PEDERSEN’S RENTALS in Seattle. UPRIGHT DECOR provided gold rimmed glassware. The gold Chiavari chairs with custom made gold chair pads were from A&B PARTYTIME RENTALS LTD.

Each couple received a bag with a bottle of Moët & Chandon champagne and two crystal French-theme inspired champagne flutes. All of the favors were sourced and assembled by event planner Genève McNally. The dinner was followed by a late night after-party held on THE WEDDING YACHT with unobstructed 360-views of the Vancouver shoreline and cityscape. “We decided to hire the yacht because we knew we had to party past Vancouver’s boring liquor curfew of 1:00 a.m. If you are on Federal waters the laws do not apply, so we could party all night long!” says Vanessa of their late-night soirée! Once on the yacht, guests enjoyed “throwback cocktails of yesteryear” including “Ginger of the Indies Gin Fizz,” “Lost at Sea Lemonade,” “Dark & Stormy,” and “Patron Lime Rocks Margarita.” The yacht itself was transformed into what Vanessa describes as a tropical party oasis, “French Riviera-style!” Here, Evan (from FLOWERZ) used palm trees, hot pink and purple uplighting, gold draperies, gold cushions and a gold lamé dance floor to create the look along with hot pink carpet (placed outside the yacht) from LONSDALE EVENT RENTALS. “The overall look and luxe transformation of THE WEDDING YACHT was spectacular. It was super impressive and dramatic! When we pulled up we were blown away and thought is this our yacht?” remembers Vanessa.

GREG

PHOTOGRAPHED BY DANIELLE DOBSON PHOTO

High school sweethearts Lori and Greg met in the Fall of 1997. The pair were engaged in August of 2012 while enjoying a camping trip with their daughter and close friends at Cultus Lake. “I was lying on a water float when Greg and our daughter came up to me. My daughter asked if I would marry her Daddy! It was so cute, and of course I said yes!” remembers Lori when asked about the adorable proposal. planning

The couple enlisted Jayleen Deelman from DREAMGROUP PRODUCTIONS to provide full-service planning for their August 24, 2013 wedding day. The celebration took place in the backyard of Lori’s parents’ house in Langley, British Columbia. Lori wore a gown designed by San Patrick from IVORY BRIDAL. She accessorized her gown with diamond earrings that were borrowed from her mother, a bangle covered in rhinestones from VIVAH JEWELLERY, and a silver rhinestone clutch from a Vancouver boutique. Lori—a professional hair stylist and makeup artist—fittingly did her own hair and makeup for her wedding day.

The bridesmaids wore black chiffon dresses with a pewter rhinestone belt from LE CHÂTEAU. Greg’s formal wear was from MEXX and KENNETH COLE. Lori carried an oversized, cascading bouquet made of white orchids with hints of purple. The bridesmaid’s bouquets were a cluster of orchids in different hues of purple. All floral for the day was created by Suzane Lee from GRANVILLE ISLAND FLORIST.

The beautiful outdoor ceremony was short and sweet and filled with humour. “We wrote our vows together, so we recited the same promises to each other,” says Lori. After exchanging their custom vows, Lori and Greg performed a sand ceremony with their daughter where three containers of sand were poured together as one. Another personalized and sentimental aspect of the ceremony was that Lori’s wedding band was custom-made using four diamonds from her grandmother’s wedding ring that Lori has had since she was four years old. “It is very special to me,” she says of the ring and its symbolism.

The ceremony decor was elegant and simple. Two lavish floral arrangements on white pillars were placed at the beginning of the aisle and the end of the altar. The arrangements were made of purple and white orchids with strands of crystals hanging from the clear vases. Hundreds of white and purple petals lined the outdoor aisle while guests were seated on clear Chiavari chairs with white seat cushions. The reception also took place at the bride’s parents’ house. A lounge area was created using all-white furniture rented from UPRIGHT DECOR.

Florist Suzane Lee of GRANVILLE ISLAND FLORIST worked with Colin Upright and his team from UPRIGHT DECOR to transform the residential location into a spectacular wedding site. Purple uplighting and suspended crystal chandeliers lit a beautifully draped tent. An extraordinarily large “king’s table” was the focal point of the tent. The extra-long table was placed down the centre of the tent and featured crisp white linen offset with a sparkly, pewter table runner. Tall floral centrepieces of alternating purple and white orchids in clear vases lined the table. Three cylinder vases with floating orchids separated each of the bountiful centrepieces.

Raquel Do of INSPIRASIAN CREATIONS created the couple’s wedding stationery including a large, unique seating chart. The chart was white, purple, and black with sparkly details. Place cards were created from white shimmery paper and were decorated with purple swirls and rhinestones. The wedding meal was catered by SAVOURY CHEF FOODS who provided an elegant and tasty buffet featuring seafood ceviche shots, crab legs, tuna, prime rib and chicken. “The food was beyond excellent!” cake

Jill Shumka of THE UNCOMMON CAKE created the couple’s three-tiered, white and sparkly

wedding cake. The cake stand was made of rhinestones and decorated with fresh orchid petals. “It was simple, elegant, and sparkly!” remembers Lori. end

Her only advice for other couples? “If I could have done anything differently, I would've made my day longer so I could've enjoyed the beauty of it all!”

notes

Guests enjoyed dancing the night away to music spun by Aimee Hawker from GIRL ON WAX and each took home mini champagne bottle favors (with custom labels) from ON CLOUD WINE.

“It was the best day of my life. I married my best friend in an absolutely stunning setting in the home that I grew up in, surrounded by fabulous people and great food and drinks. Everything looked amazing,” recalls Lori.
