WELCOME TO THE SPRING EDITION

FRESH SCENT This Spring, Miu Miu launches their follow-up fragrance, entitled Miu Miu L’Eau Bleue, with notes of lily of the valley and Akigalawood lending to the scent’s fresh and carefree spirit. MIUMIU.COM

Traditionally speaking, spring is the season for starting afresh, and we at WedLuxe are definitely feeling the desire to shake off the dark and dramatic trends of the winter months, and embrace wholeheartedly all that is light, fresh, exciting and boundary-pushing. In this seasonal report, we’ve outlined the key patterns, colours and motifs currently trending that we think will inspire all aspects of your wedding day design starting on page 6. We’re also taking you with us to Indonesia (page 50), where event, floral and fashion designers in Jakarta are producing some of the global industry’s most cutting-edge creations. Back in Toronto, we spoke with Virna Chakardemian (page 18), the Creative Director behind Yeprem, a fine jewellery house that rebels against traditional jewellery designs, and instead forged their own path by creating entirely new shapes and silhouettes. As always, we’ve included international hot happenings, Bridal Fashion (page 60) and engaging Styled Shoots (page 88) in excess! We hope what’s inside this issue will inspire you to embrace all the fresh trends this season brings. ANGELA DESVEAUX, EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

Thank you so much for meeting with us during your trip to Toronto! Can you tell us a little bit about the origins of the Yeprem brand?

The company was established by my father in 1964. Yeprem was his first name, and my brothers and I are the second generation. Yeprem started as a revolutionary in the jewellery business. We wanted to create something totally new and we thought differently than any other jeweller. We think of our pieces as art that completes the female silhouette. Most of our pieces are moveable and complex, but we make sure they are always comfortable. Your hand can fully function while wearing our big hand pieces, and they can be easily removed. My older brother develops all of our designs, he is behind the production of everything. A special kind of engineering must come into creating something so intricate!

Exactly. It is not easy to create a piece that is complex but at the same time comfortable. Once before the Grammys two years ago, Madonna contacted us to create a customized piece for the launch of her new album, Rebel Heart, and for her to wear during her performance. We were inspired by the album and we had only two weeks to design it and send it to her, taking into consideration that we didn’t have her exact hand measurements. But we had it ready on time, it fit perfectly, and she even wrote us a letter thanking us for the work that we did.

What other celebrity highlights have there been for your company?

There’s Lady Gaga, Mila Kunis, Katy Perry… the list goes on. Jennifer Lopez wore our earrings to the opening ceremony of the World Cup and Beyoncé wore one of our hand pieces in her video for “Formation.” Oprah wore the eyebrow jewellery we created. It was something very different and new at that time. That piece is particularly special, because it can be worn across the eyebrows or further up as a tiara, and we have had a lot of brides wear it that way. A lot of our pieces have multifunctional ways of being worn. 18

Do you have a favourite Yeprem piece?

My personal favourite is the Camouflage, which I wear every day. It comes in white, pink and yellow gold. Only mine is in black gold, so it is exclusive to me. But aside from this, the Claw is our most famous piece, as well as the LoveFlake, which is the smaller version of the SnowFlake. Can you tell us a little bit about your latest launches?

We work by collection, and some of the latest collections are Pink Strada and M-Pulse. Pink Strada was launched during Christmastime and M-Pulse was launched for Valentine’s Day. We did these two collections to target the lower price point of our target market. They are a bit more affordable than our regular line, as they are done in pink gold, which I love. It’s a bit more fashionable and very on-trend. What prompted you to create pieces at a lower price point?

Some people think Yeprem only creates big diamond hand pieces, so we wanted to produce more of a range and show that we can target almost anyone. What else are you launching this year?

We are launching a baby line [Y-Land by Yeprem] at our show in Doha, as well as watches at Baselworld in March. What does the baby collection look like?

It’s like the miniature version of our major pieces. We did some of our earrings, rings and hand pieces. It’s mini-Yeprem! For us, it’s something very new. It’s the line we had never thought of doing. But we want to target everyone, every age, every budget. Start them young so they grow into the obsession!

Yes! We’ll have them addicted at a very early age.

We often find that the big trends are coming out of Lebanon right now. Lebanese weddings are out of this world!

Lebanese people like to really get dressed up, they like to always see change in everything. The way we live, we really live it to the maximum. Lebanese people like to see novelties and experience new things. My brother’s wedding was in January and it was really something! We wanted to do something special, because he was the last Yeprem to get married. Can you tell us a little bit about your own wedding?

My wedding was in 2007 and it was something really big for that time, taking into consideration that the political situation was bad in Lebanon. My wedding dress was custom-made with diamonds and semiprecious stones. My father asked me what jewellery I would like to wear on my wedding day, but because I grew up in the jewellery business, no particular piece of jewellery stood out. Instead, I created a dress full of semiprecious stones, diamonds, and pearls. I actually kept it, and it’s displayed in our boutique in Lebanon. One of the trends we’ve been seeing for luxury weddings is the newfound importance of a gift of fine jewellery, either from the bride’s parents or her groom. What Yeprem piece would you recommend for a bride on her wedding day?

Well, it depends on the bride’s style. Most of our jewellery, except I think pink gold pieces, could be worn by the bride, from the crown, to our earrings, or our big necklaces, as all of them are really detailed. Right. In addition to them being beautiful from afar, they’re even more stunning close up.

The detail that symbolizes what Yeprem is all about is the marquise stones. The marquise cut goes back to our DNA, and we use marquise in almost every piece we create. Why is that?

Because marquise used to be a very classical stone shape, but since we were thinking outside the box, we decided to use a classical shape in a super modern piece. If you imagine our pieces only done with roundshaped diamonds, they would have looked very simple. When we added the marquise diamond, it gave a different, more modern twist, yet the elegance and classic touch remained. So we tend to use marquise cut stones in almost all of our pieces. It’s in our DNA; the desire to be different is in our blood.

WINTER 2016/2017

Inspired by the work of great Dutch painters of the likes of Rembrandt and Vermeer, this styled shoot brings the dimly-lit and dramatic still life paintings of the 17th century to the wedding realm with this season’s striking bridal fashion, cake artistry and floral design.
