HELLO! F R O M

T H E
E D I T O R
seven years ago, I stepped off an airplane in Grand Cayman for the very first time. I will always remember the visit because that’s when my love affair with The Cayman Islands began. Before that trip, I’d been to many other sun-filled Caribbean islands but had never ‘fallen in love,’ so to speak. Ironically, my first visit to Cayman was to celebrate weddings! It wasn’t my wedding, or even someone else’s. I had arrived for “Engage!” —an annual conference that brings together the most talented luxury wedding and event professionals in the world. Logically, the event organizers had chosen the Cayman Islands to host and cater to this incredibly discerning and very experienced group of 300 wedding planners, photographers, designers and media. Over three days and nights we descended upon Grand Cayman and collectively packed copious amounts of fun, dining (it IS the food capital of the Caribbean, after all), drinking fancy cocktails, dancing, exploring, relaxing, sunbathing, star-gazing and adventuring into our time together. In many ways, it was exactly the kind of trip you’d dream of having if we were all here for an actual wedding. I was hooked. Since that visit, I have returned to the Cayman Islands more times than I can count. I’ve brought my entire family back for several group trips (now an annual tradition!), met girlfriends for weekend getaways, and stayed for a month, a week, two weeks. Always wonderful times. Just never “enough” time! Naturally, Cayman Vows became an outlet for me to celebrate my girl crush on this Caribbean paradise. You see, when I’m not “on-island,” I live in Florida, where I spend my days fully immersed in weddings. I guess you could say I’m an expert on the subject matter because, in addition to this magazine, I’m also the founder and president of WedLuxe. Cayman Vows allows me to marry my expertise with my genuine love and passion for the Cayman Islands and the incredible and talented Caymanians I have met over the last seven years. It is my honor and privilege to showcase to you and our readers across the U.S. and Canada all the many reasons that the Cayman Islands is the ultimate location for your dream destination wedding or honeymoon. Relaxed, yet sophisticated. Casually chic. Effortless. Brimming with “Caymankind.” Always perfection. Now that you’ve discovered Cayman Vows, I hope you will be inspired to experience the magic of the Cayman Islands firsthand. I promise you, it will be love at first sight. With a seemingly endless stretch of pristine blue waters and warm white sand meant for strolling hand-in-hand, the Cayman Islands brings about romance at every turn. Now imagine over 200+ restaurants ranging from romantic beachside grills to fine dining, coupled with luxurious spa services, legendary diving, and two Sister Islands ideal for a private rendezvous, and you have the perfect match. Be it a cozy villa or one of our renowned resorts, couples are sure to fall head-over-heels for this unmatched Caribbean getaway. While only a short flight away from the United States, the Cayman Islands offers unparalleled experience for your honeymoon as well. Whether lazing on the beach with a tropical drink or enjoying more active pursuits, a honeymoon on the Cayman Islands is a paradise of indulgence. You’ll be treated to a magical expanse of lavish treats in one of the top destinations of the Caribbean, and perhaps even the world. Couples looking to spice things up with a touch of adventure flock to Cayman Brac for a crisscross of hiking trails culminating at a breath-taking 153 ft. bluff. Those seeking seclusion should consider Little Cayman, which is only ten miles long and one mile wide, with glistening salt ponds and where swaying palm fronds shade pristine beaches. For a true lovers’ escape, venture to Owen Island, a small islet only accessible by sailboat or kayak, to enjoy a picturesque picnic for two. The florist, the baker, the dressmaker—all can be found just steps from the sand in the Cayman Islands. Unmatched by Caribbean competitors, our wedding professionals will make you feel a world away on your special day. Whatever the heart desires… the Cayman Islands vows to deliver. With Caymankind Regards,
Rosa Harris

CAYMAN BRAC GRAND CAYMAN
Grand Cayman The capital island of the country is home to the vast majority of the 60,000 Caymanian residents. It’s also the number-one spot for visitors, who come to soak up welcoming culture, beautiful beaches and a dining scene unrivaled in the Caribbean. Seven Mile Beach runs along the western coast of the island and is considered one of the top beaches in the Caribbean, with five and a half miles of strollable sand edged by lapping waves and backed by numerous resorts, low-rise condo developments and beachfront restaurants. Further south, you’ll find the capital city of George Town, which is a busy cruise port by day and returns to its sleepier roots at night. Grand Cayman is also home to world-famous Stingray City, a natural sandbar where wild southern stingrays congregate and mingle with snorkelers. Don’t miss the wild beauty of the Atlantic-facing East End, the tony enclave of Cayman Kai, and the funky beach bars along the North Side.

Most Importantly Marrying Here
The Cayman Islands make having a destination wedding a breeze. Non-residents can wed the day they arrive as long as they have a non-residents marriage license and a letter from the authorized Marriage Officer set to officiate. You’ll also need proof of citizenship and age (18 is the minimum legal age) and proof of marital status, plus $250 for the marriage license itself. The country is home to a host of talented wedding vendors who can work directly with you or with the international wedding planner of your choice.
Cayman Brac
Little Cayman
Getting Here
Only about 3,000 residents call this island home, which is exactly the appeal for visitors. It’s a popular weekend-vacay spot for upscale Caymanians and a low-key escape for international visitors looking for sea and sky. This long, skinny isle (approximately 12 by 1 miles) is named after its most notable physical feature, a bluff (“brac” in Gaelic) that at its highest point towers 140 feet above sea level. Cayman Brac is home to a few small hotels, most notably Soleil D’Or and Cayman Brac Beach Club. Scuba diving is big here, with divers lured by steep drop-offs and the wreck of the MV Captain Keith Tibbets. But it’s not just water; the bluff has become a popular rock-climbing spot, and birders can sight an estimated 120 species, including peregrine falcons, brown boobys and the local Cayman parrot.
Situated 60 miles north of Grand Cayman and five miles west of Cayman Brac, the appropriately named Little Cayman is the smallest of the trio; only about 170 people call it home. Scuba divers come from all over the world to see sites like Bloody Bay (a sheer vertical wall) and Jackson’s Bight, and take in the abundant sea life from sharks to sea turtles. Most stay at Little Cayman Beach Club or Southern Cross Club, or visit via dive-centric liveaboards that sail around the islands. The island is home to the largest redfooted booby rookery in the Caribbean.
The Cayman Islands have their own national airline, Cayman Airways, which flies to U.S. mainland cities on a seasonal basis, along with Caribbean nations of Cuba, Honduras and Jamaica. The country is also served by numerous major airlines, notably American, Delta, JetBlue, Southwest and United from the U.S., Air Canada and WestJet from Toronto; and British Airways from London. Cayman Airways Express serves the smaller isles with multiple daily flights from Grand Cayman.

What’s flat, 22 miles long and four miles wide, and about twice the size of Manhattan? Yup, GC! While the Caribbean island lulls you to a restful state, its adventures, food and wellness amenities can keep you with a pretty good buzz. No one knows a destination like a hotel insider. We spoke to five of the best to get their takes on what’s tops.
Stingray City is one of the most popular to-dos on the island, but not everyone wants to battle boats and crowds. That’s the appeal of a private helicopter, says Ann Whiting, concierge at Luxury Cayman Villas. In the 45-minute aerial overview, the water is so crystal-clear that you can see the stingrays fluttering among the swimmers. Other sites are the shipwrecks that are on divers’ bucket lists, Pedro St. James Castle, the super tropical East End, and Rum Point. Call it GC’s heli-primer.
The two most captivating amenities of Le Soleil D’Or appear courtesy of nature: the stars and the waters. You can see the Milky Way from Cayman Brac, where there’s practically zero light pollution, says Lucia Poleon, guest relations coordinator. Holistic and spiritual wellness is a key at Cayman Brac’s Le Soleil, where guests can tailor scrubs, masks and detox juices by harvesting ingredients from the onsite 20-acre farm.
Seven Mile Beach. Beautiful, absolutely. Popular, without a doubt. Elena Karpechenko, an events manager at The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman, recommends an alternative spot, Smith Cove, near George Town. It isn’t unpopular, particularly on the weekends but it feels like a giant swimming pool with the added benefit of a drop-off close to shore. Bonus: The cove is protected from stronger winds. (Translation: snorkeling spectacular.)
The stand-up paddleboard is the current choice activity for many beach goers, but Kimpton Seafire Resort & Spa puts a new spin on it. The instructor not only teaches newbies how to SUP but also how to do yoga and other fitness moves while afloat, explains Virgil Napier, director of sales and marketing. You can even pair your workout with kombucha or fresh juice (or the poison of your choice). Afterward, take your newfound balance and hit the sea on a kayak, Hobie cat or jet ski.

People are surprised to discover the amount of culture on the island, says Danielle Wolfe, general manager of boutique Caribbean Club hotel. Half the island are expats, and they bring their traditions with them—in art, in food and in music. Check local listings for art gallery openings at The National Gallery, plays being performed at the theaters, or local live musicians playing at Havana Club Cigar Lounge or The Wharf. Barefoot Man and Hi-Tide are two top draws.

- Racing Hearts at the University of Pennsylvania where they both attended college and ran track. “We would see each other every day out on the track, and kept eyeing each other before we even mustered up the strength to say ‘Great race!’,” says Paige. “Then we saw each other out at a track party and were able to have our first real conversation without shying away from one another! From there on we basically ran into each other’s hearts and were inseparable.” Jeremy proposed to Paige while the pair—who describe themselves as avid travelers— were on vacation in Italy. One night after dinner, they found themselves stargazing from the private rooftop deck of their hotel when a shooting star flew across the twinkling night sky. “Before I knew it, Jeremy was on one knee proposing!” recalls Paige. (Jeremy claims that the starry sighting was confirmation that it was the right moment to propose.) “And it was,” says Paige. “I said yes in pure shock and utter happiness.” PAIGE AN D JE R E M Y M ET

- Back To Paradise to host their wedding because it is their favorite island to visit. “The diverse population, the courtesy and generosity of everyone, the service provided and the safe culture are just a few of the gems that this island provides. It’s our paradise and brings us back every year!” On February 11, 2017, the couple were joined by fifty-five of their nearest and dearest for a romantic, rustic, fun wedding at Kaibo, planned by their in-house event planner Elina Zavala. “She coordinated and executed everything amazingly, and put our stress points at ease. We felt very comfortable arriving in the Cayman Islands having not picked out anything in person,” says Paige. “Kaibo provided great hospitality throughout the entire process, and multiple amazing services for us. They were a venue, furniture provider, and catered a killer beach BBQ that all of our guests can’t stop raving about!” The bride and bridesmaids got ready at Kaibo, while the guys arrived Cayman-style by way of boat. “For a lot of our guests, it was their first time traveling to the islands so it was awesome to be able to show them what paradise truly embodies,” shares Jeremy. “They all loved the island and said they want to make this an annual trip!” CAYM A N I S L A ND S WA S A NAT U R A L C H O IC E

The newlyweds honeymooned at Three Little Birds VRBO in Kai Gardens and enjoyed an incredibly romantic experience––a private Bioluminescence Tour. “The other party didn’t show up, so my husband and I had the tour guide and boat to ourselves!” says Paige. “We were able to take a personal boat ride under a sky full of stars, learn about the constellations, see a starfish flip over on its own (never knew they could be so flexible!), and then swim underwater in the bio bay with one another while illuminating the waters around us. It was such a romantic and amazing experience.” 2 0 1 7 E D I T I O N / CAY M A N VO WS .C O M

CAR LOS
ME T
in January 2012. Krissy was working for a retailer in the Houston Galleria. One day, Carlos came into the store, shopping for his mother and sister. After a brief conversation, Carlos snatched Krissy’s email, and they hit it off right away. In June 2015, Carlos joined Krissy and her parents for a vacation in Grand Cayman (the trip and location being an annual tradition for Krissy and her family since childhood). The group was enjoying dinner on the second night when suddenly Carlos’s sister and mom appeared, surprising Krissy at the table. It wasn’t a surprise to Carlos, who had secretly flown them all the way from Panama to be there for what happened next. Krissy was completely in shock as she turned to look at Carlos, who was by then bending down on one knee asking her to marry him! “It was flawless,” says Krissy of the romantic surprise. When it came time to decide where they would get married, Grand Cayman was an obvious choice as Krissy has always known she wanted to get married there, “her favorite place to visit.” On April 30, 2016, Krissy’s dream came true as almost 100 guests joined the couple in the Cayman Islands for their beautiful destination wedding. The couple commissioned Andrea Gergely of Celebrations Ltd. to plan the destination wedding. Celebrations Ltd. also provided all of the floral, event design, decor, and rentals.
THE GOWN
Krissy’s gown by Stella York originally featured lace in the front and back but she had a tailor remove the back panel. “I wanted to have a beach look, but at the same time I wanted it to be very elegant!” she shares. Krissy wore a pair of earrings that belong to her mom. As a further nod to ‘something borrowed,’ the earrings had been worn by both of her sisters at their weddings, too. Krissy gifted each of her bridesmaids with gold-set diamond studs.

The reception took place on the Governors Lawn at The Westin Grand Cayman. Fans of Fox’s hit music-industry primetime television soap opera Empire will recognize Grace Byers (née Gealey) and Trai Byers as two of the show’s main characters. Trai plays Andre Lyon whose on-screen father Lucious Lyon, (played by Terrence Howard) just married his second wife, Grace’s character, Anika Calhoun! In real life, it’s Trai who got the (Caymanian) girl! In April 2016, the real-life couple made a homecoming of sorts to Grand Cayman for their beautiful, intimate wedding.

- Destination Homecoming in Grand Cayman (her mother’s native country), bride Grace returned ‘home’ for her destination wedding to co-star and life partner Trai. It was a natural choice—even though early on in the planning process, the celeb couple briefly debated on other locations. “We heavily considered eloping to some far-off unknown place for the most amount of privacy, but my husband knew that as an island girl, there was no place quite like home for me,” says Grace. “So in the end, we decided on a small and intimate affair on Grand Cayman.” The celebrity couple wed on April 14, 2016, at Tranquility Cove Estate, a property managed by Luxury Cayman Villas. Situated in a gated estate on the East side of the island, the location offered sentimental meaning since Grace’s family originates from the same area. For help with planning their big day, the couple commissioned Grand Cayman-based event planner Ann Ogden of Uniquely Annz, who orchestrated all on-island vendors to produce their dream wedding. “After meeting, we were sure that her expertise, skillful design and attention to detail would help create our vision of an elegant, classic, intimate setting with a warm island and vintage flair. Ann transcended our expectations with the highest level of professionalism and execution. Planning an overseas wedding can be a truly daunting task to undertake but Ann helped to make it seamless, calm and efficient. Talk about relief!”

The couple tied a Unity Cord based on a biblical passage that reads; “Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.” Each strand was a different symbolic color; gold to represent God, burgundy for the groom, and white for the bride.

Del Child from The Flower Dell provided all of the floral design for the wedding including Grace’s bouquet of crimson roses tied with burlap and lace and secured with pearls. A picture of Grace’s mother, from her own wedding day, was clasped to the bouquet and provided the traditional ‘something old’ element. Grace’s sister Faith was the maid of honor and carried a bouquet of white roses, also tied in burlap. Bridesmaids Brandy and Destiny, Trai’s sisters, each carried white hydrangeas tied with twine.

Grace and Trai hired two incredible island-based photographers, David Goddard and Rebecca Davidson to capture their wedding day. “Not only are they both phenomenally talented, but their integrity, humor and rare ability to snap the most intimate of moments blew our minds,” says Trai. “The flashes of life they were able to capture left us in awe. We couldn’t be happier.” This beautiful portrait of the newlyweds was captured by David Goddard.
STYLE NOT ES
Grace’s champagne-hued Monique Lhuillier gown was purchased at Ultimate Bride in Chicago. She paired it with a blush-hued, crystal belt and a birdcage veil and custom-made fascinator, both by Debra Shirley of millineryetc.com. Beverly Jo ‘BJ’ Pryor provided makeup services for Grace and her bridal party while Melissa ‘Missy’ Forney provided hair styling services for the group. Hairstylist Brent Flournoy styled Trai and his groomsmen.

The event was catered by Chef Remy Azavedo of Rent-a-Chef Cayman. The menu included marinated conch, filet mignon, lobster and herb-roasted chicken. “He was nothing short of stellar,” shares Trai. “He is, without question, one of the best chefs we have ever encountered.”

English Garden Party Meets Tropical Vibes
- Blueprint For Love K IMB E R LY, A CAY MANIAN, and
James, a Brit, first caught sight of each other during a 30-day yoga challenge in the autumn of 2011. The pair exchanged glances throughout but didn’t formally introduce themselves until they bumped into each other again the following December at a coffee shop. “After we shared in a smile and a warm hello, James sat next to my sister and I where we continued in conversation for a while,” shares Kimberly. “Our blueprint was set!” James proposed during a visit to England in the beautiful countryside of Ashbourne. Kimberly caught the sparkle of something dangling from his chain in the candlelight, which he playfully swung in front of her until it ‘clicked’ and then he asked her to marry him. “It was perfect,” she says. The pair wed on January 2, 2017, at The Ritz-Carlton Grand Cayman and enjoyed a delightful English Gardenthemed brunch reception which perfectly represented their British/ Caymanian roots.

INTIMATE EXCHANGE
Before the official ceremony, the couple decided to do their ‘first look’ on a pier off-site. With just their photo and video crew in attendance, they exchanged informal personalized vows.
- Happy Tears at work in January 2014. A close friendship developed over the course of a year, until their romance officially kicked off. By the winter of 2015, the couple was living together. One evening, Vanessa found herself waiting for Payton, who was late returning home from picking up her dog, Deke, from doggie daycare. “I texted him asking what was taking him so long,” remembers Vanessa. “He said traffic. About twenty minutes later, my dog rushed in with red roses tucked into his harness and a red bow made from ribbon tied around him with a ring on it. Deke instantly shook and all the roses fell to the ground!” Payton then walked in, got down on one knee and proposed to Vanessa, who said “yes” through happy tears! She later learned the delay was because Payton had been practicing in the hallway with Deke, trying to train the dog (unsuccessfully) to not shake off the roses! Having their wedding in Grand Cayman was an easy decision for the couple, especially for Vanessa—who had grown up visiting the island since she was a little girl. “After I had brought Payton to visit a few times, it just felt like the right place for our special day,” she says. “Barefoot, blue water and a beautiful sunset…how could you not choose a Cayman Islands destination wedding!?” In February of 2016, almost 50 friends and family members joined the couple at the luxury all-suite boutique hotel Caribbean Club, located on Seven Mile Beach, for their seaside wedding. met on a hot summer night in New York City. Six months later, Mihir proposed to Amee. The very next day he surprised his new fiancée with a trip to Grand Cayman where he had prearranged a variety of wedding planning appointments. He knew the Caribbean location was a fun ‘meet in the middle’ compromise where their international guests could join them for a three-day Indian wedding, and Amee agreed. Exactly one year after their first encounter, 225 of their friends and family members joined the couple for a multi-day celebration at the Grand Cayman Marriott Beach Resort. Event planning services, floral design, decor and event rentals for the festivities were provided by Celebrations Ltd. Amee’s gowns were custom-designed and made in India. Bridesmaids wore pink and gold sarees, also from India. Jackie Soriano provided hair and makeup styling services for Amee and the bridal party.

Stingray City + Rum Point Catamaran Tour
Stingray City is an offshore sandbar and feeding ground for a fever of southern stingrays, and the most popular attraction in the islands. Red Sail Sports pairs their morning visit with an afternoon at Rum Point, where you can snorkel and swim on your own, or lunch and nap under the palms.
Cayman Spirits Co. Distillery Tour + Tasting
/ 94
Crystal Caves Grand Cayman’s newest attraction was actually formed millions of years ago when seawater interacting with native limestone created massive underground caverns. Explore three walk-in caves holding unique treasures, from flora and fauna (don’t worry, the resident bats are sleeping), jaw-dropping formations of stalactites and stalagmites, and even an underground lake.
Grand Cayman may be small, but their onsite distillery is making waves worldwide, thanks to their Seven Fathoms rum (aged in oak barrels seven fathoms under the sea) and artisanal flavored rums, liqueurs, vodka and gin. Take a tour of their impressive distillery, then hit the tasting room to choose your fave.
The Flavor Tour
Camana Bay is Grand Cayman’s one-stop spot for dining, shopping and strolling, all set along an open-air, waterfront complex. This progressive tasting kicks off with bubbly at West Indies Wine Company, before taking you to four different restaurants for sample plates, paired with cocktails. The itinerary changes, as do the dishes, depending on what’s freshest at that week’s farmer’s market. 2 0 1 7 E D I T I O N / CAY M A N VO WS .C O M
Yachting with Cayman Luxury Charters Sometimes the best plan is to have no plan. That’s where Cayman Luxury Charters comes in. Their two SeaRay yachts (29” and 42”) are for private hire only, which means the itinerary is up to you, whether you want to meet the stingrays in style, snorkel the secluded North Point or find a beach for swimming and lunch of fresh conch ceviche.
Welcome Gift Goodies Cayman Sea Salt
The Lobster Pot
A Grand Cayman staple since 1965, this casual eatery sits in the heart of the capital. The nautical-style main dining room is lined with picture windows, and the adjacent deck offers prime viewing of the harbor goingson. It’s especially scenic in the late afternoon when the cruise ships pull up anchor and depart to distant isles.
Ocean water is solar-evaporated on recycled glass tables, then packaged and sold in a table salt shaker, in a gourmet spice mill, or in a spiced BBQ rub. Want to taste it first? The 100% pure salt is used tableside at Blue by Eric Ripert, and in the Salt Glow treatment at the Silver Rain Spa, both at The Ritz Carlton, Grand Cayman.
Grand Old House
Cayman Pepper Patch Pepper Jelly What exactly is pepper jelly? Creator Carol Hay guards her recipe carefully but will share that it includes Scotch Bonnet and Seasoning peppers, plus Jamaican pimento, nutmeg, cloves and other West Indies spices. The result: a versatile condiment that works as a glaze for meats or fish, a tasty topper for cheese and crackers, a secret addition to salads and slaws, and a spreadable addition to sandwiches.
Beach Bubbles Cayman These 100% natural soaps, lotions and body butters are made on-island by the talented Nina Squires, using ingredients such as shea butter, goats milk and a host of fragrant oils. Go for the ocean-scented Cayman Breeze, brighten things up with sunsetstriped Mango Papaya Guava bar, or get exotic with Heavenly, which incorporates Bulgarian lavender and vanilla. Step into her store in Bodden Town to sniff them all.
Deck Front Dining
It doesn’t get much more romantic than this Grand Cayman icon, set in a restored circa-1908 Great House from Petra Plantation. One of the island’s original fine-dining restaurants, it’s set on the waterfront in a quiet neighborhood just south of George Town. For a romantic meal for two, we love the multi-level deck, built out over the rocks and strung with twinkling white lights.
Powder Monkey Marshmallows Powder Monkey is the brainchild of Cayman-born, Lydia Ray. Ray has created an upmarket line of gourmet marshmallows with Caribbean-inspired flavors like coconut, passion fruit and rum, as well as peppermint, rose water, and chocolate chip varieties. The fluffy mounds of goodness are sold online and available in select retail stores in Grand Cayman. The cost of the marshmallows varies depending on the flavor and whether or not they contain alcohol.
Tortuga Rum Cake You’ll find these tasty treats all over the Caribbean, but they originated here, as an outpost of the homegrown Tortuga Rum Company. The base is a family recipe that goes back four generations, perfected and sold in 1990 as the Caribbean’s first commercially produced rum cake. The line also sells coffees, sauces, fudge and chocolates.
Kaibo Restaurant and Beach Bar
In the tony enclave of Cayman Kai sits this two-story restaurant overlooking the North Sound inlet. Casual beach club by day, boaters, and swimmers gather with feet in the sand to dine on barbecue at waterside picnic tables. Come evening, the upstairs dining room opens, serving some of the island’s most creative cuisine. For a safe, guilt-free fun time, try the water-taxi service from Camana Bay.
Calypso Grill This cheery eatery is packed most nights with equal parts locals and visitors, and with good reason. See those fishing boats bobbing by the dock? That’s how the daily fish comes in, caught early each morning for patrons to enjoy grilled, broiled or sautéed. Save room for Chef George’s famous sticky toffee pudding, so good that the Cayman Islands named a street after it.
/ 95
The Cracked Conch by the Sea
You have to go all the way at the tip of West Bay to find this locals’ favorite, but it’s worth it for the stellar views and lively atmosphere. Dig into conch served cracked, ceviche or chowder-style, and take in the sunset from the westernmost tip of Grand Cayman. Afterward, pop down to Macabuca, the open-air tiki bar, and continue the party.
