From the Editor
There is no April Fool to this issue. It really is full of great ideas for your next extended weekend getaway.
The intention of many of the following articles are to help you make sure you don’t miss the “must-visit” opportunities in each destination. So often, I’ve headed out to a new place for the first time and had no idea what awaited me until I arrived. After passing by all the alluring signs along the road on my way to the hotel and browsing the local brochures in the lobby, I would always find I had missed several places to go, things to do or people to see that I hadn’t fit into my already full schedule.
Upon returning home, friends would inevitably ask me, “Oh did you go see the ....?” And I would have to answer no. Then they would describe the best time they had ever had at the very location I just returned from without experiencing the fun I should not have missed.
So what is popular in each area on our bucket list? How do we keep from missing out on the can’t-miss destinations? This issue is a perfect beginning to your plans as the main theme this month is “Destinations 101.” Our writers have shared their experiences with the absolute best places to go, things to do and people to see in each of their articles. As I read through each page, I find yet another place to visit that will go on my already very long bucket list.
The point to this story is: My best advice before deciding where to go, what to do or who to see on your next extended weekend getaway, is to look to those who have already been there once or twice or ten times. They can give you pointers on what not to miss and what you MUST include in your itinerary. And THIS issue’s contributors are doing just that!
Happy Spring and Happy Travels

TRAVEL TRENDS Ready, Take, Action!
Have you ever watched a movie and thought , “I’d love to visit the place where that was filmed?” I know I did.
As a teen, when I saw the movie Blue Lagoon, I wanted to visit that place. I never imagined that visiting the sets of movies and TV shows would become a travel trend with a name.
What Is Set Jetting?
Set-jetting, also known as film tourism, is the practice of traveling to destinations featured in films or TV series. For example, set-jetting involves visiting the castles featured in the Harry Potter movies or touring the locations where Hallmark movies are filmed.
The trend began to gain momentum last year and is predicted to continue beyond 2024. Set-jetting is driving tourism growth and boosting local economies. According to Expedia’s 2023 travel trends report, two-thirds of global travelers have considered Set-Jetting, and 39 percent have booked trips to destinations they have seen in films or TV.
Karolina Turowska of photoAiD reported according to

their survey of 1,000 Americans, 78% are likely or very likely to opt for TV or Movie-themed trips.
Gaining In Popularity
Why is this so popular now?
Binge-watching of shows and movies became popular during the pandemic years. This provided inspiration to explore travel differently.
During a recent trip to Clearwater Beach, I visited Dunedin, Florida, where the Hallmark
movie A Taste of Love was filmed. We visited several locations where filming occurred.
When I was in Torrance, California, last fall, I visited the home where Buffy the Vampire Slayer was filmed and Torrance High School, which was the site of multiple movies and TV shows.
Last month, I learned about East Point, Georgia, where multiple TV shows and movies were filmed.

Beverly Hills, CA
Beverly Hills has been a backdrop for feature films and television shows since its inception. The city debuted ‘Happy Trails’ last year, making it easy for visitors to traverse the famed 90210. Happy Trail stops include:
● Urth Caffé - Take a page from Vince Chase’s book and grab an Entourage-inspired lunch at Urth Caffe.
● Beverly Hills City Hall & Civic Center - Follow in Axel Foley’s footsteps and admire the Spanish Renaissance-inspired architecture at Beverly Hills City Hall & Civic Center, seen in Beverly Hills Cop and other classics.
● Edelweiss Chocolates - Indulge in chocolate like Lucy and Ethel with an afternoon treat at Edelweiss Chocolates, home to their famed chocolate conveyor belt scene.
● Beverly Wilshire, A Four Seasons Hotel - Sip on THEBlvd Lounge’s movie-inspired ‘Feeling Pretty’ cocktail at Beverly Wilshire, A Four Seasons Hotel – most recognized as the hotel in the film starring Julia Roberts, Pretty Woman
● Electric Fountain - Channel your inner Cher, and check out the Electric Fountain glowing under the night sky, as seen in Clueless.
Oceanside, California
Oceanside, California, is a popular destination for set jetters. Several movies were filmed here, including the original Top Gun, Bring It On, and Purple Hearts on Netflix.
TV shows filmed here include The Bachelorette, Animal Kingdom on TNT, and Hayley’s On It (an animated Disney Show)
Georgia State Parks
As Georgia takes over the film industry and is touted as the “Hollywood of the South,” its diverse natural beauty proves to be the star of the show. From the mountains to the swamps and the coast, Georgia State Parks’ natural resources provide the perfect backdrop for some

of our favorite television shows and films.
“A Walk in the Woods,” starring Robert Redford, Nick Nolte, and Emma Thompson, had scenes of the Appalachian Approach Trail at Amicalola Falls State Park.
“Trouble with the Curve” starring Justin Timberlake, Clint Eastwood, and Amy Adams had a scene in Netflix series: “Cobra Kai” starring Ralph Macchio filmed their training scenes at Panola Mountain State Park in Stockbridge.
The television series The Walking Dead used Sweetwater Creek State Park in Georgia as the perfect backdrop for its gruesome zombies.
The list goes on and on, featuring numerous Georgia State Parks.
Mohonk Mountain House
New Paltz, New York
This 1869 Victorian Castle resort known as Mohonk Mountain House is situated just 90 minutes north of New York City and surrounded by 40,000 acres of pristine forest. It is a prime location in Upload, the sci-fi comedy TV series on Amazon Prime.
Additionally, Mohonk was recently featured in season five of SHOWTIME’s TV series, Billions. The resort was also the location of the 1994 film The Road to Wellville, which stars Anthony Hopkins and Matthew Broderick.
These are just a few of the hundreds of destinations in the United States that are helping to make “Set-Jetting” a top travel trend.

ennis has met its match—pickleball, one of the fastest growing sports in the world. Played with a paddle and perforated ball, the game is considered a low-impact, easy-to-learn sport for all age groups.
Pickleball was founded in 1965 by Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum on Bainbridge Island, Washington. According to USA Pickleball, the game got its name as a nod to the “thrown-together leftover non-starters in the ‘pickle boat’ of crew races.” And as the sport grew in popularity, a controversy ensued about the family dog, Pickles (who some insisted was the name behind pickleball.) But that was discredited by Pritchard and his family, who insisted the dog came after the game debuted, and that the dog was named after the game, not the other way around.
You won’t be in a pickle if you’re looking to find a getaway with a pickleball court. Cruise lines and resorts are
winning over travelers with pickleball courts and amenities. Here are some top resorts and cruises that offer pickleball courts, as well as instructors and tournaments.

Loews Coronado Bay Resort, San Diego <https://www. loewshotels.com/coronado-bay-resort>
Data from Google’s Year in Search released at the end of last year revealed that “pickleball courts near me” was the number one searched term in San Diego, more than any other city in the country. Loews Coronado Bay Resort was already ahead of the

West Virginia
Tennis always made quite a racket at The Greenbrier but it recently witnessed its ratio of tennis lessons to pickleball lessons advance to 60-40 in recent years, a huge increase in pickleball since the game was first introduced at the resort a few years ago. From 2022 to 2023, court time on the pickleball courts increased more than 30 percent.
“We saw the growth of pickleball throughout the

country and knew it would be something our guests would enjoy,” said Josh Beverage, fitness manager at The Greenbrier.
Because of an increase in demand, The Greenbrier installed three permanent courts last winter to take it from two courts to five total courts. The Greenbrier also offers clinics and individual lessons, family tournaments on many summertime and holiday weekends and has plans to host major pickleball events inside its 2,600-seat stadium, Center Court at Creekside in the near future.
Cape Cod
The outdoor pickleball season is short and sweet in this neck of the woods, which makes it all the more appreciated when the sun shines in summer. There are two resorts on the Cape with pickleball in their sports portfolio for pro picklers and newbies.
The Mansion at Ocean Edge, Cape Cod, Massachusetts
https://www.oceanedge.com
Six new pickleball courts are ready for play at this historic Brewster resort, with certified instructors offering personalized instruction. Nice: The resort accommodates solo travelers by pairing them with other players for doubles matches, enhancing the social aspect of the sport. There are also several pools, a beach, a golf course, a spa and the resort is located on the celebrated Cape bike trail, too.
And Wequassett Resort & Golf Club https:// wequassett.com in Harwich has two pickleball courts and a raised viewing terrace along with cookout spaces. Guests can take lessons with an onsite resident pro—who can also double as a partner for a game of doubles. Also, expect tournaments. The perfect way to end a session on the courts, indulge in the jacuzzi or cool off in the pool and hang in a poolside cabana with sips.

TRAVEL TIPS 101 PLAN AHEAD Before
Before I started travel writing, I often picked a vacation spot based on having heard it was a fun place. I would go and have fun but when I got home, inevitably someone would ask, “Did you see such and such there?”
Research The Destination
I did a press trip to Birmingham without checking it out once. It was a great trip and I got to visit a lot of the Civil Rights sites. Later, I discovered there is a jazz museum in Birmingham that would have been a must see if I had known it was there before, not after, my trip.
CVB Websites
Usually, every destination has a Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) or Chamber of Commerce. They will have a website listing things to see and do.
TripAdvisor
Don’t stop there. Check out TripAdvisor and see what other travelers recommend.
Publications
Definitely check out magazines and online publications like

a lot of flights leaving at that same time, TSA may be packed, and the two hours might not work.
Plane Hints
Everyone has heard the rule get to the airport two hours before your flight. But it is a good idea to check flight schedules around your flight time. If there are
Parking at large airports can be a pain. I use an offsite place like Park N’ Fly. I book a parking spot ahead of time, get there, and turn over my car, or park myself, and board the bus or shuttle that takes me right to the gate I need. It’s usually cheaper and much easier than using the airport lots where you often stand and wait many minutes for the bus.
It’s easy to use mobile boarding passes on our phones, but just in case there is a technological

Before You Go
glitch, it’s a good idea to have a printed copy. I usually put my phone, the printed pass, and my driver’s license in either my pocket or a small placard I can hang around my neck, so I don’t have to dig them out of my purse at TSA.
Other items
it’s a good idea to bring and have where you can get to them easily is some snacks. We all know you can’t bring water or drinks, but you can bring a bottle of frozen water or an empty refillable water bottle you can refill at most airports without paying a ton for a plastic bottle of water. It’s a good idea to wear your heaviest clothing and layers on the plane, so you get the most in your luggage. You want to wear shoes that are easy off and on. Do avoid underwires, bangle bracelets, and anything that might set off the metal detector. Sometimes it’s unexpected items. I’m past the age where I need to take off my shoes, but I have one pair of Earth Shoe Sandals that must have metal in the arch as they set off the alarm every time.
It’s important to download the airline’s app for whatever airline you are
flying on. It will alert you to delays and cancelations. On one delayed flight, those of us with the app got notifications before the desk attendants.
Flying on the day you need to arrive for a special activity is a way to avoid extra hotel expenses but in this time of so many cancellation, if you time it too close you may miss your activity altogether. Remember every airline has a different size limit for carry-on baggage, so check to be sure you carry the largest allowed but no larger.
Packing
When I am flying, I have found that by rolling instead of folding, I can get more into a suitcase. One thing to do is

organize around basic solid color pants or skirts. Then pack tops that can go with multiple bottoms. Add a few colorful scarves to change the look and you can get multiple wears out of one outfit while making it appear different.
I always try to pack clothes that will dry quickly and then rinse them out at my hotel as needed. One way to hurry the drying is after washing it in the sink, wring it out then wrap it in a dry towel and squeeze it some more. That will keep most lightweight items from dripping on the floor. If it is still drippy, hang it over the tub or shower at night. When I know it’s not dripping, I either hang it near an air conditioner or heater

vent. If you are lucky enough to have a balcony room, discreetly draping it over a chair or table on the balcony during sunny days does the job quickly. I try to use a “do not disturb” on my door if I have clothes drying in my room while I am out.
Save money by doing carry-ons.
I pack my carry-on then use my computer bag as my personal item putting my purse and other things I can cram in like phone and camera in the bag. Many flights, especially Delta, will announce just before the flight, “We have a full flight. If you would like to check your carry-on free to destination, see the attendant.” Rush to the desk and check your carry-on, then take your purse or other small bag out of the computer bag and arrange things so you still have a small personal item, and the computer bag becomes your little carry-on.
Driving hints
Driving is much more traveler friendly as you can stop whenever you want and unless you run into a bad road accident you usually know when you will arrive at your destination. I always use Google Maps while driving. Others had said Waze is great. Since I tend to have a heavy foot, I appreciate hearing that “Speed trap ahead” warning so I can slow down. It’s not infallible, how-
ever.
It’s a good idea if you plan a stop enroute to check hotel prices ahead of time. Waiting until you are tired and stopping at the next hotel you see sometimes means you miss a much less expensive place that is equally nice at the next exit. If you are on a tight budget, car camping is becoming popular. Truck stops like Pilot, Flying J, Love, and others allow RVs and cars overnight in their lots. If you do this, it’s a good idea to park in a well-lighted spot in the lot and keep your car doors locked. A small emergency bag with toiletries and a change of
clothes is handy to take into the rest room next morning to change. I tried it once at a Pilot. I parked right next to the side of the building, so I was near the rest room. Since I was only sleeping for a few hours and then heading home, it worked okay. Most of these places do have showers you can rent if you need to.
Another option is a state park camping ground. Most states allow car camping and are safe. I have camped in RVs many times in state parks and never had a problem. I did a car camping night a few years back at Palmetto State Park in Texas.
-18- | ExtendedWeekendGetaways ~ April 2024
I had attended a writers’ conference in Santa Fe and was heading to Beaumont and Port Arthur where the CVB was hosting me. It’s a long drive between Santa Fe and Beaumont. Palmetto State Park is located about midway. I booked a nice corner site next to the rest room for $15.
It was after dark when I arrived and I went straight to my site and set up. It was on a point and had the lake as my backdrop. The sites were large, and I had a fire pit, BBQ grill, and a picnic table. I picked one without electricity as I had no need for it. All my cooking items were fitted into one small bag. I brought just a tea pot that plugs into either a wall outlet or my cigarette lighter, a little cast iron frying pan, Irish potatoes, a package of precooked bacon,
a little margarine, some tea bags, and paper plates and plastic utensils, plus a fire starter and some charcoal and lighter.
Since I had already set up a small mattress from my travel trailer in the back, I just needed to smooth it out and arrange my quilt and pillows. I slept soundly and awoke to a beautiful morn-
ing.
There were a lot of dwarf palmetto plants, from which the park gets its name between me and the next campsite, so I had privacy while I cooked my breakfast on the grill. Much more comfortable than the truck stop lot. Most state parks have showers in the campsite restrooms.

Pawsitivity BEST TRIP
By Sarah Miller Freelance Travel Writer
Posh poodles stride into five-star resorts alongside mixed mutts. With tails wagging and lopsided-tongued smiles, the furry guests are greeted with open arms–or paws rather. Upon arrival, they receive a welcome package filled with treats, a dog-friendly itinerary, and a new fluffy dog toy. Are these dogs part of the Golden Preferred Pet Hotel Club? No, that doesn’t exist (not yet anyway). They are the lucky recipients of a new travel trend.
How many dog-friendly hotels exist?
would trade away an amenity for themselves for more pet-friendly policies.
A whopping 75% of American hotels ranging from luxury, midscale, and economy allow pets, according to AHLA. Dog owners are loyal to man’s best friend, so much so that a recent Wag! poll showed that 70% of frequent travelers almost always seek out pet-friendly hotels, and 94%
Being an avid traveler and new dog owner, I’ve learned plenty of tricks myself. At just a wee three-years-old, our Labradoodle, Bear, has traveled to 20 states. Bear has rested his fluffy head everywhere from camping to cabins – even high-end resorts, including a stay at Walt Disney Resort’s Yacht Club.
Dog Travel 101
Should Fido “Stay” or “Come?”
If the thought of leaving your dog behind on vacation leaves you– and your dog– whim-
pering with sad puppy eyes, that’s understandable. Dogs are part of the family, and they do not like to be separated from their pack either. Here are a few things to consider on whether your dog should stay or come. Look at your travel plans. Just because you’ve found a perfect pet-friendly hotel doesn’t mean your dog should come. If long days on the beach are on the plan, and the beach isn’t dog-friendly, then it’s probably best for Fido to stay.
Are you flying or driving?
Most dogs are not small enough to ride in the cabin. That means, the only option is cargo hold which can be

quite stressful on your dog. If your dog loves going for rides, a road trip would likely be a good option– go, have fun!
Safe Travels
Make sure your dog is secure while road tripping. Stop every two to four hours, so your pup can take potty breaks and walks. Pack your “Doggy Bag” with all the essentials.
•harness/leash •towel • water bucket for paws • food • food bowl •water bowl •water bottle •blanket •toys •treats •chews,bones •doggy doo bags• vaccination records • crate or travel carrier • first-aid kit• brush • medications if necessary (should all be current) Hotels 101
Book early, oftentimes there are a limited number of pet-friendly rooms available. Read the pet policy, is there a size limit (only dogs under 30 lbs)? What are possible charges for bringing your dog along? This can range widely from no charge to $150 a day–some charges are a flat rate for the stay.
Another thing I love to do is call ahead to ask questions. Call to the front desk or concierge if they have one. They can help beyond what’s on the website. Here are a few questions I’ve found helpful to ask.
1.What kind of greenspace is available for dogs?
2. Any good walking trails nearby?
3. What’s within walking distance? Dog-friendly restaurants, parks, attractions?
4 Are dogs allowed in the common areas?
Sit, Stay–Time to Play! Ready for a fun-filled trip with Fido, here are some travel tips and tricks.
1. Have a plan for activities that don’t allow dogs. Some dogs do not like to be left alone in a strange place. Having others to trade off with for sightseeing is one solution. When we took our pup to Walt Disney World, we met up with my parents. We took turns visiting the parks, while one or two of us stayed back to relax at the resort and walk the beautiful grounds.
2. Check out the BringFido website and app. The website and app are incredible. Here you’ll find dog-friendly places to stay including hotels, vrbo, and airbnbs that match your location. Plus, find attractions and restaurants that welcome dogs. The app even helps locate hiking paths for breaks while road tripping. By Renée Gordon Freelance History Travel Writer
Seeking Ghent’s Adoration of the
The name itself is a form of the Celtic word “ganda,” meaning confluence.
Travel and a good tale in a single destination is a dream come true. Ghent, Belgium, owes its settlement to the fact that it is located at the juncture of the rivers Scheidt and Lys. The first permanent settlement dates from 406 and by the Middle Ages it had grown wealthy from trade and textiles.
Ghent is notable as one of the most historic and beautiful cities in Europe filled with architecture that will take your breath away and artistic treasures that are unique. Everything about Ghent is extraor-
dinary, especially the manner in which the medieval and the modern blend and flow together seamlessly. Our search for Hubert and Jan van Eyck’s Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, and the stories surrounding it, will take us throughout the city and into some surprising places.
Our Ghent search is best begun in the Historium. There we embark on an experiential walk through a day in 1435 as seen through the eyes of one of van Eyck’s apprentices. Visitors walk through a series of galleries that spring to life

with the aid of modern technology incorporating life-sized dioramas, sight, smell, sound and visuals. In Jan van Eyck’s studio we meet him, see how his workshop functioned and watch as he paints The Madonna of Canon van der Paele. A trip through the Historium gives you an idea of the era and how paintings were accomplished in the workshop of a master artist.
The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, aka the Ghent Altarpiece, is actually the work of both Hubrecht (Hubert) and Jan van Eyck. Evidence proves that Hubert began the work and upon his death it was completed by Jan, at the 1432 request of Joos Vijd, and placed in a chapel in the Church of Saint John, currently the Cathedral of St. Bavos. It was dedicated on May 6, 1432 and this monumental polyptich was painted on oak panels with mineral pigments. Jan is best known as the artist who perfected the use of oil paints and this is considered his ultimate work. Internationally it is known as one of the most important artworks in the world, one of the first painted altarpieces and the most stolen.
The work has been involved in no less than seven thefts because of its beauty and religious significance. Twelve panels depict Catholic beliefs, some from the Book of Revelations, starting with the Annunciation and proceeding to the adoration of the Mystic Lamb, symbolic of the blood sacrifice of Christ. Almost from the beginning the work was so famous that there was a fee to see it. The frames of van Eyck’s works, unlike other painters of the era, were signed and dated. A quatrain discovered on the frame in 1823 confirmed

the fact that Jan completed the work after the death of Hubert. On the bottom of one panel there is a chronogram, words symbolizing numbers, that reveal the date the work was undertaken, May 6, 1432. The Mystic Lamb was on view until 1566 when it was hidden in a tower to protect it from revolting Protestants.
In 1794 the main panels were removed to Paris for Napoleon and not returned for 21-years. Some of the side panels were sold in 1816 and the remainder of this great artwork barely missed being destroyed by fire 6-years later and finally in 1920 it was reconstructed.
The trail and the tale become even more intriguing with the April 11, 1934 theft of two panels featuring “The Just Judges” and “St. John the Baptist.” A $1-million ransom was demanded and “St. John the Baptist” was returned as proof that the
panels were really in this person’s possession. Shortly thereafter Arsène Goedertier, a stockbroker, suffered a heart attack and as he was dying he claimed to know where the painting was. The authorities found incriminating information but never located the “Just Judges.”
The case is still an active investigation and the police continue to apply emerging crime solving techniques. In a macabre turn an amateur investigator disinterred Goedertier’s skull in 1995 in order to hold a séance to gain information concerning the heist.
During WWI neutral Belgium was invaded by Germany on August 4, 1914. They managed to resist for 11-days but were ultimately overwhelmed. Germany invaded the country again at the start of WWII on May 10, 1940. Hitler was set on obtaining the Ghent Altarpiece from the start of the war and in
July 1942 he ordered that it be surrendered. It was secreted within the Reich awaiting its removal to Hitler’s planned Führermuseum containing art confiscated from the conquered countries.
The US created the American Committee on the Protection and Salvage of Artistic and Historic Monuments in War Areas in 1943. The Monuments Men and women were supplied with lists of stolen artworks to trace and return to the owners. In 1944 they were given photographs of the altarpiece and were informed that the painting was hidden in an Austrian salt mine.
On May 12, 1945 they recovered The Mystic Lamb and more than 6,500 additional works. Because of its importance to the world in 1946 It was the first artwork to be returned.
Located outside of the cathedral is Ghent’s 1913 homage to Hubert and Jan van Eyck. The sculptural monument is a carved diorama depicting a number of people gathered to pay tribute to the artists. The brothers are seated in the center with Hubert, the elder, reading the Bible with the tools of his trade at his feet.
Jan looks forthrightly ahead while holding his palette and brushes. The Caermersklooster, Ghent Cultural Center, was originally a Carmelite friary that is now exhibition

space. Both permanent and temporary exhibits are presented in the center. STAM, the Ghent City Museum’s highlights include a panoramic view of the city and a maquette of Ghent on a 1:1000th scale. The city’s story is told from the 1400s.
The Ghent Altarpiece has undergone damage, theft and restoration over the course of its 589-year history and in 2012 the Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage Museum of Fine Arts began a stateof-the-art $1.4-million-euro ($110-million) restoration. One panel was restored at a time and a replica was exhibited in its place. The work was completed in 2020.
We have reached the end of our search. The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb is on exhibit, for a small fee, once again
housed in St. Bavos Cathedral. The cathedral is not the first house of worship on the site. The earliest church dates from 942 but the earliest archeological evidence on-site is a 12th-century Roman nave that is within the crypt. The structure was started in the 1300s and was completed in 1559. It is virtually a museum of ecclesiastical art.
The 16.5-ft. by 11.15-ft. Ghent Altarpiece is awe-inspiring from the moment you enter the room. Audio guides are
available and interpret each individual panel. Moving to the rear of the painting you can obtain a view of the additional panels that were only visible when closed. Of special note is the humanistic gaze of the lamb. There is limited seating for contemplation. Ghent is charming by day but by night it becomes spectacular. The historic center is illuminated with special architectural lighting until midnight each evening giving the city a glow that will linger in your memory.

RECIPE FOR LIVING Nothing New Under
“There is nothing new under the sun.”
All my research agrees this statement is from the book of Ecclesiastes in the Bible. Although quoted by many, it is attributed to Solomon as the first person to say it.
Oftentimes, we like to think something is new because it is the first time we have encountered it. However, this simple, timeless bit of wisdom suggests everything we experience has already transpired in some form or fashion.
I must admit I shake my head in disbelief every time some product is touted as being New and Improved. How is this possible? If it is new, there wasn’t anything prior to improve. And if it was improved, then they had to have started with something which needed improving. In my mind, this proves it isn’t new.
Travel writers rarely experience anything which is not similar to something they’ve already seen and written about. This includes hotels, resorts, museums, amusement parks, restaurants, attractions, concerts, sports events, fairs, festivals and most anything else you
can recall. Some people look for the new, different, bizarre, rare, crazy, kooky or just plain weird while others want the familiar, similar and repetitious. Perhaps they are trying to recreate previous memories.
That being said, sometimes a location gets a facelift, added features, etc. These are fun because you can relive the familiar and experience the newness at the same time. Sometimes in our travels, we come across something which is unique to us, and that is when the fun really begins. Yes, we could read about it and look at the pictures, but being there in person makes a difference. So, if you are ‘thinking’ about going somewhere, do it! The memories of time spent with family and friends are priceless.
Our goal is to present options to you, the reader. If you like to return to favorite vacation spots, we try to keep you posted on current activities in the area. At the same time, we strive to inform our readers about upcoming events worth attending. Perhaps the only reason some stay close to home is because they just don’t know what else is out there. Believe me, there is a lot of interesting and fun things waiting to be discovered and explored.
I feel the same way about a new recipe. Perhaps we repeat menus quite often because we just aren’t aware of other options. Almost ten years ago, I found a flowchart which depicts the all too familiar process of trying a new recipe. It’s embarrassing to admit its accuracy.
You know the process. We see a photo of food which looks
-32- | ExtendedWeekendGetaways ~ April 2024
Under The Sun
quite appetizing so we decide to try it. This requires finding the recipe when we are actually ready to cook, so we do one of several things. In times past, we would tear it out of the newspaper or magazine. Then we might tuck that scrap of paper somewhere such as with a stack of mail or stuffed into a recipe box.
More recently, we are prone to
By Kandy Derden Go, See, Do Editor
slip it under a magnet on the refrigerator or snap a picture of it. In this case, we transfer it to our computer. From there, it will either be lost, deleted or possibly posted on Pinterest where someone else will continue the process.
The upstart of the whole Disappearing Recipe Syndrome is how often we continue to make all of our old standbys. This could be because we don’t have the ingredients on hand for something new or we’re too tired to think. But mostly it is because we can’t find the recipe since we can’t remember where we put it. Admit it. You know I’m right. Even the above-mentioned flowchart ends with all steps leading to the same option: make what you always make.
Such is the case with this recipe. It isn’t new. I got it from a friend in college. Please don’t ask me how many decades ago that was. I’ve never made it, until now. I found it in one of my many recipe boxes while seeking inspiration for dinner. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve paused, skimmed through the ingredient list and then put it right back in the stack. It has always sounded interesting, but either I was missing a key ingredient or didn’t have time for it to chill or it just wasn’t suitable for my purposes. But this time it was different. I stopped,
read through the ingredient list and pulled it out to try it.
FROZEN LIME MINT SALAD
1 pkg. lime Jell-O (3 0z.)
1 can crushed pineapple and juice (20 oz.)
miniature marshmallows – to taste
1 cup butter mints – chopped or crushed
1 – tub Cool Whip (8 oz.)
¼ c. chopped toasted pecans (optional)
Mix together undrained pineapple with dry Jell-O. Fold in marshmallows and mints. Fold in Cool Whip and nuts. Cover and place in freezer for several hours or overnight. Serve with a garnish of fresh mint leaves and/or fresh raspberries. This is a light and refreshing side dish or dessert which is easy to make. It could easily become a long-standing favorite.
As a side note, the original version of this called for package sizes which are no longer available. This resulted in making some very minor adjustments to the ingredients. So, there you have it, a recipe which is New and Improved.
Oops! There’s that silly sentence again. Perhaps we should just say, Old and Updated.

“Follow your eyes to wherever they lead you…and the world should begin to change for you.”
The nine Muses were goddesses of the Ancient Greeks charged with inspiring those with all forms of artistic ability to attain ever more greatness. Their parents are Zeus, King of the Gods, and Mnemosyne, the Goddess of Memory. The basis for our current word museum is “Museion,” the place of the Muses. Alexandria, Egypt was the site of the most
renowned museion and the famed library.
The earliest, documented, public museum predates the Alexandrian structure by more than 1,000-years. In Ur, believed site of the birth of the People of the Book’s patriarch Abraham, 2,500-years ago Princess Ennigaldi-Nanna established a museum. She was a priestess who was
in charge of educating the younger women and she founded her museum in 530 BC within the palace compound. The empire, and her museum, ended circa 500 BC. mymodernmet.com/ennigaldi-nanna

some of the displays from the museum. Also unearthed were the world’s first museum labels. Ennigaldi-Nanna had curated the artifacts, some dating from as early as 2600 BC, with etched clay cylinders in three languages, describing the displayed article. Wooley is credited with excavating as many as 35,000 objects.
Museums are commonly an outgrowth of an individual’s private collection that is gifted or bequeathed to showcase. Ennigaldi-Nanna’s father, Nabonidus, king and archaeologist and King Nebuchadnezzar II’s collections were the foundation of her museum. The Philadelphia museums in this article are the results of personal tastes and a desire to expose the public to what they love. Philadelphia boasts nearly 100 museums but the three highlighted should not be missed. The Mütter Museum of medical history, part of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia, was established with an 1858 donation from Dr. Thomas Dent Mütter. It was initially on Locust Street but was relocated, with original display cases, in 1909 to 19 S.
22nd Street. Mütter was the chair of surgery at Jefferson College and pioneered both plastic surgery and the use of anesthesia. He died at the age of 48 and gifted his massive collection of antique medical tools, models, anatomical specimens and bodies, along with $30,000 ($1,135,339.02) to erect and maintain a building, to the College of Physicians. The museum was only accessible to medical professionals
until the 1970s when the public was allowed entry.
The museum is internationally famous. Highlights of the exhibited collections are slides of Einstein’s brain, an 8-ft. long and 29-inch around colon, 139 human skulls, the death cast of Siamese twins Chang and Eng and President Grover Cleveland’s jaw tumor. The collection has grown to 25,000 artifacts.

Philadelphia’s Jules E. Mastbaum’s admiration of French sculptor Auguste Rodin resulted in an unparalleled collection of his works displayed in the sole Rodin Museum not in France. Mastbaum, after making a fortune in cinema, became a serious art collector. Between 1924 and 26 he purchased more than 200 of Rodin’s works, some of which were cast personally for Mastbaum. Eventually his collection would include drawings and small pieces. In 1926 he requested permission to build a museum for the public from Fairmount Park Conservancy and received land on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. He hired architects to build a museum that blended art and the natural landscape. It opened on November 29. There are approximately 150 works in the Rodin collection. Featured pieces include The Eternal Springtime, Young Mother in a Grotto, Sorrow and The Thinker. The real museum showpiece is the first bronze casting of Rodin’s 37-year project, The Gates of

Albert C. Barnes was born of a poor family and worked his way through the University of PA Medical School. While working as a researcher he and a partner created Argyrol, an anti-infective that made him wealthy by age
35. He bought out his partner in 1908 and as owner he integrated the workforce by race and gender, shortened his staff’s workday to 6-hours and added a voluntary educational component. Twoyears later he sent two men to Paris to collect paintings. They returned with 30 paintings. He continued to collect and was the first collector to amass African works as art and not utilitarian cultural icons. He was deeply involved with the Harlem

Renaissance and African American art.
He opened the Barnes Foundation in 1925 within a purpose-built neoclassical mansion with an arboretum in suburban Philadelphia. His collection grew to include Native American, American, European art as well as furnishings. His arrangements, he referred to as ensembles, of artworks blend cultures, style, genres, colors and shapes in order for viewers to connect with the art in a variety of ways. He died in 1951 and left behind his foundation and a number of rules to govern its management. No works in the collection were to be copied for retail use, the number of visitors was limited and no work was ever to be moved from its original gallery placement.
The city immediately set out to take ownership of the $25-billion collection. They moved it to a 4.5-acre site in Philadelphia. The original Barnes was replicated at the
heart of the larger foundation. All of the galleries are as they were originally and no object is more than 1/2-inch from its former placement. Among the 4,000 rare artworks on display are 179 Renoirs, 69 Cezannes, 59 Matisses. Highlights not to be missed are “The Bathing Group” (Renoir), “The Dance” (Matisse), “The Card Players” (Cézanne), “The
Postman” (Vincent van Gogh) and “Redheaded Girl in Evening Dress” (Modigliani).

Family Fun GASLAMP QUARTER
While the historic Gaslamp Quarter in San Diego may be known for its buzzing nightlife and club scene, it’s also a perfect destination for families who want to spend time together in the city.
You’ll find family-oriented museums, restaurants, hotels, and things to do, so you can bring everyone from infants to grandparents. The Gaslamp Quarter transforms from a vibrant daytime hub to a lively nightlife scene that’s equally enjoyable for families with children. When I visited the area, I was around 7 months pregnant and slowly waddling everywhere. The Gaslamp has lots to see, do, and eat within a small area, allowing you to conveniently walk or drive where you want to go.
What to Do
The New Children’s Museum should be at the top of the list of things to do with kids in San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter. There are workshops, art installations, toddler classes, sensory-friendly mornings, community programs, and more. They’re open from 9 am to 4 pm every day except Tuesdays when they’re closed. Bring babies, toddlers, and kids to this inclusive museum.
Work together as a family to complete a mission by solving puzzles and finding clues at The Escape Game San Diego. They have different escape rooms for varying skill levels and

each escape game has multiple rooms that your family can explore. It makes a fun family activity.
Grab some sweets and treats at IT’SUGAR to take back home as a souvenir or to nibble on while you’re at the hotel. The large store has candy, chocolate, gummies, and snacks of all kinds. They do have a slightly more mature adult area toward the back with candy underwear and other novelty items, but there are plenty of goodies for children throughout the shop.
Take the kiddos of all ages to watch a baseball game at Petco Park, home of the San Diego Padres. They have family restrooms and allow strollers as long as you don’t block the aisle. They even have KidsFest on Sundays in Gallagher Square from when the gates open until first pitch. There are games, face painting, bounce houses, and other family-friendly activities.
Other nearby options include walking around Waterfront Park for a blend of city and bay views. Spend the day watching the animals at the San Diego Zoo or take a Trolley ride to Balboa Park.
Where to Eat
There are many places to eat with children in the Gaslamp Quarter, whether you’re there for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Cafe 222 closes early but it’s a terrific spot to stop by for breakfast or lunch. Their kids menu boasts goodies such as a strawberry shortcake short stack to a breakfast with egg, sausage, potatoes, and toast.
For cheese-loving kids, The Melt might be a marvelous spot to grab a bite to eat. The kids menu has macaroni and cheese, cheeseburger, and grilled
cheese, as well as fries, shakes, and desserts on the regular menu. It opens in time for brunch and stays open late in case you arrive in town at night and the children need something to munch on.
Werewolf is family-friendly before 9 pm, particularly for bigger kids and teens simply due to the seats. City Tacos has a bunch of tacos with different meats and fillings, making it a quick stop to find a taco or two to suit each person in the family. Order at the counter, wait a few minutes, dig in, then you can be on your merry way. They’re open from 11 am to 8:30 pm, so your family can find something to eat if need be.
Where to Stay
No need to leave your pup with a sitter. Hilton San Diego Gaslamp Quarter has pet-friendly rooms so you don’t have to leave any member of your family behind. They also have an on-site restaurant and bar, making it a convenient place to grab breakfast or dinner. I was pregnant when I stayed there and if you’re in the mood for a mocktail, they can customize most cocktails into a non-alcoholic version if you ask.
If your kids like adventures and the outdoors, the Westin San Diego Gaslamp Quarter might be your best bet. The has a rooftop pool to enjoy the weather and views as well as hotel bikes to ride. Get a bang for your buck. Through May 1, 2024, kids under the age of 12 can eat for free at Bronze Bird, the on-site restaurant, with the purchase of an adult meal.

The Outback is located within the largest, contiguous, pristine dark sky zone in the lower 48 states, and this certification helps to protect a large portion of the designated zone. Within the Oregon Outback International Dark Sky Sanctuary (OOIDSS) are the unincorporated communities of Adel, Plush, and Summer Lake, the Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge, a portion of the Fremont-Winema National Forest, nearly 1.7 million acres of land managed by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Summer Lake Wildlife Area, nearly 80,000 acres of state-owned rangeland, and the Oregon Outback Scenic Byway.
The intentions behind pursuing a large-scale sanctuary are to protect much of the unique, pristine, dark sky zone, to keep any additional dark sky recreation dispersed (as it is now), to allow a number of incorporated gateway communities to economically benefit from the same project, and to more effectively and efficiently manage a certification within a remote area. [AG3]
Oregon’s DARK SKY SANCTUARY
“As the population of Oregon and the trend of light pollution continue to rise, the unparalleled scale and quality of the Outback’s dark skies will long serve as a starry refuge to people and wildlife alike,” said DarkSky Delegate Dawn Nilson, the environmental consultant who managed and authored the application. “Adherence to the Lighting Management Plan (LMP) will allow this large expanse of land to serve as a demonstration site of sustainable lighting principles not only within southeastern Oregon but possibly the Pacific Northwest Region.”
“This four-year collaboration brings together so many of the elements we try to achieve in regenerative tourism,” said Bob Hackett, Executive Director of Travel Southern Oregon. “It not only elevates the destination experience for visitors to Lake County and opens up opportunities for local businesses, but it also helps agencies and residents stew-
ard their lands in ways that celebrate a legacy of starry night skies for generations to come.”
The OOIDSS is situated in the northern extent of the Basin and Range Province of the Western United States. It’s sparsely populated, very remote, and primarily comprised of public lands. It’s a high desert area characterized by sage scrub and abrupt changes in topography that alternates between narrow faulted mountain chains and flat, arid valleys and basins. Within this unique geography of geological wonders is priority habitat for an array of wildlife, including American pronghorn, bighorn sheep, sage grouse, white-tailed jack rabbit, and migratory birds navigating the Pacific Flyway. The region is also culturally significant and is home to a 13,000-year-old human occupation site. Dispersed within the OOIDSS are hot springs, wild horses, private rangelands, ranches, and cattle.

During the nomination process, stakeholders also participated in night sky monitoring, lighting inventories, lighting improvements (i.e., decommissioned 14 lights and retrofitted 60 lights on public and private land). Education and outreach efforts included: Stargazing & Natural Night Skies Webinar Series, screenings of the film Saving the Dark, tri-county library access to Night Sky Adventure Kits, dark sky gatherings, local dark sky videos, educational exhibit tables coinciding with popular local events, dark sky presentations and workshops, and library programs as well as partnering with the neighboring Idaho Dark Sky Alliance to cohost educational events.
About the International Dark Sky Places Program: Founded in 2001, the International Dark Sky Places Program is a non-regulatory and voluntary program to encourage communities, parks, and protected areas around the world to preserve and protect dark sites through effective lighting policies, environmentally responsible outdoor lighting, and public education. When used indiscriminately, artificial light can disrupt ecosystems, impact human health, waste money and energy, contribute to climate change, and block our view and connection to the universe. The Oregon Outback International Dark Sky Sanctuary now joins more than 210 Places that have demonstrated robust community support for dark sky advocacy and strive to protect the night from light pollution.” Learn more by visiting www.darksky.org/conservation/idsp.

Revving Into Adventure
By John Arnwine Freelance Contributor
As the trees start budding and the roads awaken from winter. it’s time for the Sedalia Motorcycle Associations biannual pilgrimage to and through the winding roads of Arkansas. As a member, I always enjoy the ride. This is a group of fellow enthusiasts who meet twice a month and celebrate the diverse world of local and statewide motorcycling of all facets. Including, but not limited to street bikes, dirt bikes, as well as all-terrain vehicles. we usually get away in early fall and late spring.
Our journey begins with the thrill of the open road, leaving behind the mundane highways for the crooked and steep paths that promise adventure at every turn. Whether it’s through Eminence, Missouri, or across Peels Ferry at Bull Shoals Lake, each route offers a unique tapestry of landscapes to feast our eyes upon. My personal favorite? Taking the 65 Highway south to Fair Grove, Missouri, then down the 125 Highway, where the real excitement begins. The sooner we can get off the state
highways and onto the crooked and steep roads the better.
But no trip to Arkansas would be complete without a pit stop at the iconic gas station/burger joint in Oark. Tucked away amidst the Ozark Mountains, this hidden gem is a magnet for adventurers of all stripes, from sports cars to street bikes. Despite the hour-long wait for a cheeseburger, the allure of their
famous pie and quirky charm is irresistible.
The Oark General Store is located in the Ozark Mountains off State Highway 215 about 21 miles north of Clarksville (Johnson County). Many believe it to be the oldest continuously-operating store in Arkansas. It was added to the Arkansas Register of Historic Places on March 3, 1995.

Adventure on 2 Wheels
Our rides to Arkansas are generally 12 to 20 motorcycles. All of the fellows that we ride with are very experienced motorcyclists. But, even experience will not keep you out of trouble. Safety and being seen are always at the top of our list.
Our first day’s ride was approximately 360 miles, and we stayed in Mountain View, Arkansas. Mountain View is known for its old-time music on the Courthouse Square and city park. It is not uncommon to find six to 10 different groups of people playing together. Stand-up bass, fiddle, guitar, banjo, and harmonica are the “go to“ instruments.
We generally get a bite to eat at the rainbow café and then stop in for an ice cream before going to listen to the music. Typically, when we stay in Mountain View we will stay at the Parkwood Inn and suites. Usually our second day of writing will take us between 225 miles and 275 miles. Usually six hours of riding. Six hours a day of riding is more than enough to make a full day. When we get done, most of us are ready to get a steak and call it quits for the day. The roads that we take throughout Arkansas are crooked and steep, twisty, and turny. The more switchbacks the better.
All of us really enjoy riding
our motorcycles… they are our favorite toy. The scenery in Arkansas is beautiful and we go there for that as well as the pristine roads. There is a motorcycling map, “Butler Maps,“ that designates what roads are the best. They are color-coded. Orange being good, red is better and gold being the best.
My favorite destination would be Colorado. I love all of God’s creation, the state of Kansas is just down on the “love list” a
bit. Beautiful state, but a long, flat drive to get to The Rockies. Arkansas is only a couple hours away. My motorcycling club “ The Sedalia Motorcycle Association” have several members who are men of faith and we feel blessed to ride each time we get together.
My advice to newcomers would be this: 1. Ride with folks who are of your skill level. 2. Take your time and allow plenty of time to take in the sights. 3. Get a Butler map. 4. Avoid holiday weekends. 5. Go early or late in the riding season to avoid the the heavier traffic on the twisty, curvies and steepies :). 6. Avoid all flat, straight roads...they are boring.

“When I received an intriguing email from a Public Relations firm extending an invitation to come to Lubbock, Texas, I immediately thought, “Great, a community I know nothing about.”
Where is Lubbock?
It is located approximately 350 miles West of Dallas in the Texas Panhandle. The countryside nearby is flat and is actually at 3500 ft elevation. Upon checking, I learned Lubbock is far from a sleepy town, for it is home to Texas Tech University, with nearly 41,000 students, making it the 6th largest University in Texas.
Once I started working on airline reservations, I learned it is a community easy to access. I flew from Palm Springs International Airport to Dallas and then transferred to Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport for a short, over-anhour flight to Lubbock.
LUBBOCK of Great Surprises
Cotton Court Hotel
In 1979, three large tornadoes came together and devastated downtown Lubbock. This horrific storm resulted in businesses and residents recreating their lives on the city’s perimeter. Thus, several hotels, including name brands like LaQuinta Inn, Red Roof Inns, and Extended Stay, were built to accommodate visitors.
However, the Cotton Court Hotel now stands proudly in the center of Downtown Lubbock. Cotton Court Hotel exudes its namesake, cotton.

Is Full Surprises
atmosphere to relax at the end of a busy day.
Wineries in Texas?
Over the three days, I had the opportunity to visit three wineries located on the 290 Wine Trail, which includes 60 wineries. Yes, I know it is surpris-ing that there are so many wineries, but the elevation of 3500 ft provides the perfect environment for grapes, including Sangiovese, Malbec, and Tempranillo.
English Newsom Cellars is a picturesque venue about 10 miles from downtown Lubbock on 140 acres on the Wine Trail. It is considered a premier facility in the area and named one of the top 20 wineries in Texas.
From the cotton-themed décor in the lobby and cotton products in the gift shop to the spray of a dried cotton plant hung on one wall of my room. I noted the shower curtain and even the Kleenex box were woven from cotton.
My second-floor balcony room had the southern feel the minute I approached it, for by the door was a delightful red rocking chair. Sitting in the chair at night, I could view the large courtyard with a large, heated year-round pool, firepits, and comfy lounge sofas, creating the perfect
McPherson Cellars
McPherson Cellars is housed in a former Coca-Cola Bottling plant. You quickly recognized the signature design and familiar red facade as you approached the building. The casual seating provides an inviting place to meet your friends while tasting their small-batch wines. They were among the first to grow Sangiovese in Texas and won over 600 medals in state, national, and international wine competitions.
Llano Estacado Winery
Llano Estacado is the largest and best-selling premium winery in Texas. It is located 11 miles from Lubbock and surrounded by cotton fields. The dog-friendly tasting room is a comfy place to relax and taste outstanding wines. It differentiates itself from other Texas wineries by producing white, red, sweet, and dry wines.

Buddy Holly Center
Buddy Holly grew up in Lubbock, Texas. Unfortunately, he was killed in a plane crash at the age of 26. The Buddy Holly Center has been created to honor Buddy and showcase his influence on music during his short life.
The Center has a number of individual showcases. One contains his leather-making tools and examples he created, a hobby he enjoyed. Another contains his guitars, and still another highlights his actual performance schedules. As you are about to exit, a showcase holds the black, broad-dark-rimmed signature glasses he was wearing when he was killed.
National Ranching Heritage Center
The National Ranching Heritage Center has 55 historic structures that served as welcoming shelters or homes for cowboys and ranchers. Moved from various locations through-
out the state to these 19 acres, people can walk the paths and view how the structures evolved through time and the settling of the West.
The Welcome Center has outstanding exhibits to help educate people about the various aspects of ranching. Hundreds of schoolchildren come here to learn about a way of life that is still maintained today. The extensive gift shop has the book series Hank the Cow Dog, which is apparently a mustread for anyone growing up in Texas.
Art District and Art at Texas Tech
To help revitalize the downtown area, city officials have now embraced approximately a four-block area, making it an official art district. An artist, Charles Adams, donated funds to create the Charles Adams Project, which now houses, among other things, a printing studio, a clay studio, and a metal studio where artists can come and create.
Nearby is housing for the artists, where they can live and work among creatives to share ideas. The LHUCA non-profit provides space where the art is displayed and attracts buyers.
If you want to see large public art installations, head to the Texas Tech Campus, where approximately 100 large installations spread throughout the campus. The University is thriving, new buildings are being built, and the 1% rule for art is triggered, allowing for sizeable outstanding art to be incorporated into the design or grounds.

Pie for breakfast
Having worked in Texas years ago, I was prepared for dining and receiving large portions of food when dining. Nothing has changed— portions are still enormous.
When was the last time you were expected to eat pie for breakfast? I sat down, and six different kinds of pie were placed in the center of the table. Admittedly, I smiled when I saw the fluffy coconut cream pie near my seat. How did the universe know I love coconut cream pie? Let’s say I was not disappointed. This tradition started here because the pies are so good they sell out early in the day at the Cast Iron Grill.
Casual meals were at Evie Mae’s, Neighbor F&B, and Monomyth for a quick breakfast with fantastic quiche. West Table, an upscale restaurant with New American cuisine, provided an excellent opportunity to try familiar food with a global twist. La Dosa Cellars provided a fun atmosphere the first night, where we drank sangria and stuffed ourselves on their outstanding tapas.
The Nicolett
This elegant Nicolett restaurant downtown Lubbock was the final evening gathering place for the journalists, who readily admitted they were all surprised at what we learned about this city. Dining in a former greenhouse with vines creeping up the walls and the sun setting gracing its light through the glass panes seemed the perfect cocoon to share a fabulous meal and conversation.
Impression of Lubbock
After returning home, I went to the BNP Paribas Open in the stadium with 16,000 people. A conversation with the man sitting beside me revealed that he grew up in Lubbock and left right after graduating from high school.
After listening to me and everything I told him about Lubbock, he said, “You know what? It is the 50th-year reunion of my class. I wasn’t going to go, but after hearing what you saw and did, perhaps I will go.” There is no better way to sum up how people’s perception of Lubbock, Texas, is not an accurate image.
The next time you drive through the area, I urge you to make Lubbock, Texas, a stop on your itinerary. You are bound to be as happy as I am that I accepted the invitation to learn about this thriving city.

From two previous visits to San Antonio
I thought I knew what this city had to offer visitors.
There’s the Alamo of course, the Riverwalk, and plenty of restaurants serving Tex Mex food. But my third visit opened my eyes to what this town really has to offer; cuisine from around the World, a pioneering craft beer scene, 500 years of American history, a passion for public art, and plenty of festive outdoor spaces.
If you’ve never been to San Antonio–or if it’s been a while–you really need to visit soon. It
A Perfect Long In Historic SAN
will surprise and delight you.
Exploring the Riverwalk on land and water
My first experience of San Antonio’s River Walk was in February of 2015. It was cold, windy, and mostly deserted, so I’ll admit I didn’t enjoy it. Fast forward to September of 2023 and this time it was a whole different experience.
Located in the heart of the city, The River Walk is three
and half-miles of paved and landscaped paths along the San Antonio River. Flanking the walkway are restaurants, shops, hotels, museums, parks, and public art. It’s colorful, sometimes noisy, and always interesting. My favorite way to explore it is on foot, early in the morning. But I also enjoyed evening strolls as bars filled with patrons and live music began to play.
Another option is to purchase
-106- | ExtendedWeekendGetaways ~ April 2024
Long Weekend SAN ANTONIO
a ticket for the Go Rio San Antonio River Cruise. These 35 minute narrated rides give a different perspective of the River Walk while the guide shares the city’s history and the stories of colorful characters.
Remembering the Alamo
As the site of one of the most famous battles in North America, the Alamo looms large in our imaginations. But the remaining buildings are quite small, centered mostly on the flat-fronted church. Don’t let this deceive you. Centuries of history unfolded here before and after the 1836 battle. In addition to touring the small church, be sure to walk through the grounds to see where pivotal events took place.
The highlight of my visit to the Alamo was the recently opened Ralston Family Collections Center. Here you’ll find hundreds of artifacts documenting the history of The Alamo particularly and the Southwestern United States more broadly. Many of the artifacts once belonged to the collection of pop star, Phil Collins, before his donation in 2014. Weapons, letters,
painting, flags, musical instruments, military uniforms, and much more help bring history to life.
Shopping and dining in the Pearl
Located at the heart of the Pearl is a century old brick brewery that at one time was the largest brewing company in Texas. Today this historic building has been carefully refurbished and reborn as a boutique hotel, upscale restaurants, and a gourmet market.
Surrounding the original
building are a collection of shops, restaurants, and outdoor gathering places. I visited the Pearl three times in four days, once for lunch and twice for dinner. Needless to say, I loved this spot. Each time I watched couples and families socializing, eating, and shopping. It’s a comfortable place for kids to run around and play in the fountains while their parents relax with a beer or glass of wine. I highly recommend dinner at Carriqui and Southerleigh Fine Food & Brewery. The first describes itself as Southern Texas food and it

was here I enjoyed the best frozen margarita of my life. Southerleigh also serves Texas inspired cuisine and offers an excellent selection of brews and cocktails. If you love tacos as much as I do, Chilaquil is the ideal stop, especially for a casual and affordable lunch.
Sampling local beers
I always love trying local beers while I travel so I knew I would enjoy visiting a few breweries during my time in San Antonio. What I didn’t expect was meeting the man responsible for kick-starting the black brewers movement in the U.S. Marcus Baskerville is the founder of Weathered Souls and a very innovative brewer. But he is also the man behind the National Black Brewers Association, an organization committed to helping brewers of color get started in this lucrative industry. If you’re visiting San Antonio, you must pop into Weathered Souls and sample several of their beers.
Other highly recommended local breweries include Alamo Beer Company, Roadmap Brewing Co., and Künstler Brewing.
Art in the city
I was struck by the number of murals and sculptures I saw during my strolls along the River Walk. It turns out the city is a hotbed of public art, and as I looked closer, I saw it everywhere. Fortunately there’s a directory that details every artwork in the city.
If you enjoy modern art museums as much as I do, be sure to set aside a few hours to visit the McNay Art Museum. Part of this museum is located in the former home of its founder, Marion Koogler McNay. The home, the grounds, and the art make for a great way to spend a day.
Where to stay
Over the course of three trips to San Antonio I’ve stayed in various places in the city, but I
definitely prefer to stay along the River Walk. And the Hotel Valencia might just be the perfect spot along the river. This Spanish themed hotel is located on a quieter stretch of the River Walk, so you get the views without the noise. The decor is warm and inviting, the rooms are large and comfortable, and the staff friendly and helpful. The doormen are so attentive that the front doors opened every time I approached, even before I could reach for the handle. There are a dozen or so restaurants and cafes within walking distance, most along the historic Houston Street.
San Antonio is a city worth the effort to visit. It could be a great stop as part of a Texas roadtrip, or a destination all on its own. The Alamo City has much to offer whether you enjoy history, gastronomy, art, or shopping.

(StatePoint) There are few words more synonymous with Kentucky than horses. In fact, just saying the words together evokes images of thoroughbreds and jockeys adorned in vibrant colors, as they thunder into the homestretch at Churchill Downs - all competing for the dream of winning the Kentucky Derby.
Horse racing and the Kentucky Derby are so ingrained in Kentucky culture that the first Saturday in May, or Derby Day, as Kentuckians call it, is akin to a state holiday. More than 150,000 people travel to Louisville every year to witness the most exciting two minutes in sports. Millions more, particularly those in the Bluegrass State, throw Derby Parties and tune in at home. Since 1935, the city of Louisville begins celebrating a full two weeks early with elegant balls, a marathon, concerts, and community events during the aptly named, Kentucky Derby Festival.
This year will be particularly special because it’s the 150th “Run for the Roses,” making it the oldest continuous American sporting event. Over the last one and a half centuries, the size and scope of the venerated race, and horse racing

culture, have grown exponentially.
As massive as the Derby is in the world’s consciousness, it’s just the beginning when it comes to Kentucky horseracing. Here’s what to know, about all of Kentucky’s thoroughbred racetracks, whether you are a horse enthusiast or just looking for a fun way to spend your afternoon:
Churchill Downs
With approximately 70 days of live thoroughbred racing a year, Churchill Downs is a busy place. Every year, the mile-long course and the barns next to it house, train and race more than 1,400 horses and welcome more than a quarter of a million visitors. Meets at
the “Twin Spires” include the Spring Meet, which begins after Derby Day, the September Meet, and the Fall Meet. If you find yourself at Churchill Downs on a day without races, check out the Kentucky Derby Museum next to the track, where you can also book racetrack and barn tours to get an insiders’ look at what makes Churchill Downs so special.
Keeneland Race Course
Keeneland in Lexington has been a horseracing hub since its first races in the late 1930s. With a Spring Meet in April and a Fall Meet in October, Keeneland features around 30 days of racing annually, and each year, its four thoroughbred auctions result in more than $500 million in sales.

The Thrill Of Horse Racing
Keeneland, a National Historic Landmark, offers year-round tours of its grounds and training facilities as well as the opportunity to watch horses conduct morning workouts.
Turfway Park
A few miles from the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Airport, Turfway Park holds two meets each year: The Holiday Meet in December and the Winter/Spring Meet from January to late March. Turfway originally opened in 1959 as Latonia Race Track and has featured several prestigious races over the years, including the Jeff Ruby Steaks and the John Battaglia Memorial, both of which are included on the “Road to the Kentucky Derby.” Due to its winter and early spring races, Turfway’s
track is made of synthetic material that makes racing safer during bad weather.
Kentucky Downs
Located just north of the Kentucky-Tennessee border in Franklin, the all-turf flat racetrack at Kentucky Downs is beautiful, and the only European-style track in North America. Kentucky Downs only holds one meet a year during late summer, making it one of the most exclusive racing events around. During these seven race days, Kentucky Downs offers experiences ranging from VIP treatment at the finish line to free tailgating and general admission on the final turn and stretch.
Ellis Park
Positioned just north of the Ohio River and just south of
the Kentucky-Indiana border in Henderson, Ellis Park Race Course holds meets from July to September. Designed after the Saratoga Race Course in New York, the 1.125-mile dirt track features a 60,000-person grandstand offering amazing views of the racing action.

Virginia’s 140-miles long Shenandoah Valley lies between the Allegheny and the Blue Ridge Mountain. This incredibly beautiful region has been a staging ground for history since the 1600s and for Native Americans for approximately 11,000 years prior to that.
The Chester and Manassas Gaps afforded natural access for people and goods into the valley via the Shenandoah River. In 1788 Front Royal was formally founded as a river town. During the Revolution the area supplied much needed goods to the colonists and they continued to supply both America and Europe in the 19th-century. discoverfrontroyal. com
Front Royal was originally named LeHewtown, in honor of the French Huguenot landowner who held 200-acres in 1754. The origin of the city’s name is unclear, but some

believe that early French inhabitants referred to it as the royal frontier or, “le front royal,” or, that the colonial militia had difficulty following directional commands so they were told to “front the Royal Oak,” a giant oak tree on the parade ground. The city was made Warren County’s seat in 1840. The Alexandria, Orange and Manassas Gap Railroad began service in the 1850s and that, other transportation routes, Valley’s geography and its food production, made the city of enormous strategic importance to both sides during the Civil War.
The Battle of Front Royal Driving Tour consists of ten stops that interpret antebellum and Civil War history. Each stop is designated with a marker and brochures with driving directions, maps and site information and are available at the Visitor’s Center, the point of departure. The 16-mile trail winds throughout the town and along the banks of the Shenandoah River. Much of the landscape has undergone very little change. The 170-acre Front Royal Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002. There is a 33-site walking tour. warrenheritagesociety.org
Because of the number of troops in Front Royal it was also a hotbed of spies the most famous of which was the notorious Confederate spy Belle Boyd. The 19-year old Belle and her mother relocated from Winchester after her father joined the Confederate army.
In 1862 a Union soldier insulted her mother and Belle shot him. At the time of the Battle of Fort Royal she managed to pass through enemy lines and give information to Stonewall Jackson and facilitated his decision to attack the Union. Belle was sent to prison three times. She survived the war, wed three times and became an actress. She may have been the model for Scarlett O’Hara.
The Belle Boyd Cottage is a typical 2 over 2 with a central hall. There are no original furnishings but the flooring is original. High-
lights of the tour are the many photographs of Belle and an outstanding portrait that symbolically captures her life and spirit.

The Shenandoah received its name, “ClearEyed Daughter of the Stars,” from a Native American legend. The first nonindigenous people to view the valley were English settlers in 1716 and within 20-years immigrants, mainly from PA, moved into the region. They followed an established Indian path that they named the Great Wagon Road. Thomas Jefferson’s patent was registered in July of 1774. He paid 20-shillings, $24,675.70, for 157-acres of land and constructed a 2-room log dwelling in 1802 and left a black man, Patrick Henry, as manager. Henry was given land and a cabin by Jefferson and he lived there as manager until his 1829 death.
In 1831 22-year-old Cyrus McCormick invented a mechanical reaper that cut, threshed and bundled grain using horsepower. Prior to his reaper it took one man one day to harvest 3-acres. With a mechanical reaper it took 1-hour per acre. In 1834 he was granted a patent. He moved his operation to Chicago in 1847 and in 1851 his invention was recognized with a medal and became internationally famous. Tours of the original McCormick Farm are free, self-guided and provide access to the 1822 family home, gristmill, blacksmith shop, museum and workshop.
The Frontier Culture Museum is an absolute must if you are in the area. It is located in Staunton. This outstanding complex brings to life through demonstrations, outdoor reconstructions, live interpretations, and the ethnic farmsteads from which the cultures that settled the Valley came. The compounds represented, West Africa, England, Germany, Ireland, Native America and Virginia, are authentic and include homes, work areas and outbuildings. www. frontiermuseum.org
Lexington was founded in 1778. The town was once known as Gilbert Campbell’s Ford but was renamed in honor of the village in Massachusetts where an early Revolutionary battle and all the streets except one, Main, were named after Virginia’s Revolutionary heroes. www.Lexingtonvirginia.com
Thomas Jonathan “Stonewall” Jackson became legendary during the Civil. He graduated from West Point in 1846 and served in the US Army. In 1851 he took a professorship at the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) in Lexington teaching philosophy. In 1854 his first wife, Elinor Junkin, died in childbirth and he emancipated her slaves. In 1857 he wed Mary Anna Morrison and the
following year he purchased a 2-story brick, Federal-style home in Lexington. They owned 6 slaves, Albert, Amy, Hetty, her 2 sons and Emma, a 4-year-old girl.
The 45-minute house tour includes period furnishings and personal possessions. Of particular note are a piano purchased for his wife, bedroom furniture from his first marriage and his framed diploma on his study wall. In 1861 a messenger delivered the order for Jackson to march VMI cadets to Richmond. He would not return alive. The home, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, has been fully restored. http:// www.stonewalljackson.org
