RECIPES FOR LIVING:
What’s Your Timel By Kandy Derden Let’s Go, Do, See Editor
Are you famous? How do you know? Is there a chart somewhere which reveals your rank on the fan-based public recognition meter? Or, are you nearly famous? Again, how do you know? Is there a scale somewhere to measure your current status and/or the length of time until fame is achieved? I’m not aware of any such device, although I’ve been told internet search engines continually gather such statistics in their data bases. Therefore, I’m fairly certain access to a simple list could be of great benefit to those who are working toward the specific goal of being famous. The timeline to fame is different for everybody, probably due to a wide variety of factors. For starters, each individual has different talents and skills, levels of creativity, determination, confidence, desperation and maybe even luck. It might be beneficial to first ask: How do you define nearly famous? Almost? Local only? Not quite? Still striving? Perhaps these could be markers on the above-mentioned meter. Do you want to be famous? I’ll admit there is that momentary little burst of joy the first time someone recognizes you and looks at you with an expression of awe. On the flip side, consider all the people who achieved fame and then -8- | ExtendedWeekendGetaways ~ February, 2024
began to spend a lot of their time avoiding fans and photographers. It even caused them to hide from the very recognition they wanted – at first. For some, all it takes is time for their popularity to diminish. For others, it can happen quickly if someone else takes over their status as fastest, strongest, biggest, etcetera. Remember, once you are the best at something, there is no place to go, except down. Consider the story of Walter Ray Williams. He was a horseshoe champion. With time, he had bested all competitors. Knowing there had to be a way to use his skill to continue making a living, he decided to try a similar sport. It didn’t take long for him to become a professional bowler. Making a smart decision and adapting his skill definitely worked well for him. He excelled in his new venture and will forever be remembered for it in the Professional Bowlers Association Hall of Fame. Even though I am not a bowler, this is the only Hall of Fame I’ve had the opportunity to visit. It was more interesting than I expected, perhaps because of the stories such as described above. One of my many interests is baking and cake decorating. Okay, so I don’t know of any cake baker’s hall of fame, but this is my own personal version of adapting. Years ago, I was given what has become THE perfect chocolate cake recipe. I’ve made if for friends and relatives many, many times, all to rave reviews. Then one day I was asked to make a Red Velvet wedding cake. The two recipes I had were not nearly as good as I had originally thought now that I had this yummy recipe for comparison. To the test kitchen we go. I modified the two original red velvet recipes combined with the chocolate cake recipe.
line To Fame?
I am pleased to report, it worked! The result is a Red Velvet Cake worthy of the Love of your Life. Don’t be afraid. It’s easy to make. It’s impressive and perfect for Valentine’s Day. In fact, it’s nearly famous!
Hurry-Up Red Velvet Cake
2 c. flour 2 c. sugar 2 tsp. soda ¼ c. cocoa ¼ tsp. salt
1 c. oil 1 c. buttermilk 2 eggs 2 oz. red food color ¾ c. boiling water 1 tsp. vanilla Sift dry ingredients. Add oil and buttermilk. Blend well. Add eggs and vanilla. Then food color and water last. Bake at 350 degrees for 3040 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.

TRAVEL TRENDS:
Is “Dry-Tripping” In By Robin O’Neal Smith Associate Editor Mocktails, non-alcoholic lookalike drinks, are gaining in popularity. Many hotels and restaurants have taken “Dry January” and are extending the “alcohol-free” offerings in the upcoming months. One of the popular trends is that destinations, restaurants, hotels, and bars are even packaging vacations and experiences around non-alcoholic activities and adventures known as “Dry Tripping.”
growing segment of “thoughtful” drinkers who want to mix it up occasionally. It’s an exciting and surprising change in the market, but a good one for sure.” Gaibrell Pickney, Food & Beverage Manager at The Emily Hotel in Chicago, echoed, “Between October and December 2023, our mocktail sales have increased significantly. We want to put just as much creativity and care into our mocktails as our standard cocktails.”
Why Alcohol-Free?
Arts and leisure writer Michael C Upton has embraced the “alcohol-free” lifestyle and travels nationwide tasting various “mocktails.” When asked why the trend is becoming so popular, he stated, “Many people have embraced an alcohol-free lifestyle, whether it’s for health reasons or social reasons. Some people are just sick of getting hangovers.
A Popular Option
According to John Cassanos, Director of Food and Beverage at the Kimpton Journeyman Hotel in Milwaukee, “In the last couple of years, there has been a remarkable growth in interest from our visitors as well as good options in the market to use in those cocktails. This is not just a Dry January phenomenon.

“Many former drinkers wanted the same flavor profiles found in their favorite cocktails, which needed more than soft drinks. The rise in popularity of zero-proof cocktails comes at a perfect time when the interest in classic cocktail culture is at its peak. People like the nostalgia of old-timey drinks. Those drinks can easily

How Do The Drinks Compare?
During some recent press trips, I tried a variety of “Dry” drinks, and all were delicious.

Even in the heart of Key West’s famed party scene, locals and tourists alike can find “dry” drinks. The Four Flamingos: A Richard Blais Key West Kitchen in Key West, Florida, offers the Watermelon Mint Refresher. Located on Chicago’s iconic Magnificent Mile, Michael Jordan’s Steakhouse offers guests an extensive non-alcoholic cocktail list year-round. The bar provides an elevated ‘sports bar’ atmosphere where sober/sober curious travelers can get excited to watch their favorite games without the pressure to drink. The historic Amway Grand Plaza Curio Collection in Grand Rapids, Michigan, has seven bars and restaurants. Each offers mocktails, non-alcoholic beers, and a non-alcoholic wine. This English-inspired Deer Path Inn on the outskirts of Chicago has a celebrated cocktail program helmed by the Chief Spirits Officer— and just this year, he designed programming for the sober-conscious traveler. The new zero-proof programming includes a bookable “Zero-Proof” hotel package featuring in-suite DIY mocktail mixology kits, a private mocktail mixology lesson with the inn’s Chief Spirits Officer, and a take-home gift for at-home mocktail making. Maui’s most stunning restaurant, Merriman’s Kapalua, features a selection of quench-worthy, carefully crafted, zero-proof cocktails found nowhere else on the Island. Hotel ZaZa is a luxury boutique hotel brand with properties in Austin, Dallas, and Houston, offering a ‘Healthy You’ package to help guests become their healthiest selves while they stay. Guests booking overnight accommodations can add the ‘Healthy You’ package, including mocktail credit each evening. Kissimmee, known for its diverse culinary scene and vibrant entertainment, has much to offer those looking for “Dry-Tripping” deals. International Drive is a hub for tempting selections. frescos, tango mango teas, and the refreshing Lichenstein Lemonade. Fogo de Chao offers options like the Clean Cucumber Martini and the Brazilian Limonada. Off Highway 192, Salt & Cellar promises an unparalleled mocktail experience crafted by the cocktail professor, Jarl de Vries. Every palette will find a drink specially shaken and stirred just for them at Aveline, a mezzanine bar within the Kimpton Shane Hotel in Atlanta, GA. Baltimore’s vibrant dining scene is buzzing with a burgeoning zero-proof movement, offering exquisite mocktails that entice your taste buds without the alcohol. They are also home to the Hopscotch Bottle Shop, the first non-alcoholic bottle shop in the state. It is a retail destination and a community hub for tastings, classes, and events educating those who are sober-curious or “sober-serious,” about an alcohol-free lifestyle. Whether you’re embracing a teetotaler lifestyle or simply eager to explore the world of exciting zero-proof beverages, Greater Fort Lauderdale has you covered. Various restaurants and bars offer “Dry” options, creating a Mocktail Heaven. I visited and enjoyed a restaurant, Casa Sensei, on Los Olas Boulevard, which offers waterfront dining with fruity mocktails like Tropical Fusion and Casa Sunrise. Philadelphia also embraces the “Dry Culture” trend with restaurants like Bolo, offering mocktails to full-fledged dry bars like The Volstead. They also have a growing community centered around booze-free living evident in a surge of events like the recent Dry Vibes sober festival at Location 215. As someone who enjoys “Mocktails,” it is great to know that adult and elevated beverages can still be delicious and accessible for everyone.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you already know the Super Bowl will take place at the recently opened Allegiant Stadium and marks the first time Las Vegas and the state of Nevada will welcome and host the Super Bowl.
sports spectacle ever. The NFL has been an incredible partner, and we look forward to working with their team, the Host Committee and our partners across our destination to showcase Las Vegas as ‘The Greatest Arena on Earth’.”
The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) and Las Vegas Raiders were invited by the National Football League to collaborate on a bid to host Super Bowl LVIII. After a nearly one-year process, the bid was presented to and approved by the 32 clubs earlier today in Dallas.
Responsible for the destination’s collective hosting effort, the Las Vegas Super Bowl Host Committee is comprised of community leaders in business, tourism, gaming, sports, entertainment and government. The executive committee includes Chair Maury Gallagher, CEO of Allegiant Travel Company; Vice Chair Sandra Douglass Morgan, Of Counsel at Covington & Burling LLP; and committee members Jeremy Aguero, Chief Operations and Analytics Officer for the Las Vegas Raiders; Anthony Carano, President/COO of Caesars Entertainment; Clark County Commissioner Jim Gibson; Steve Hill, CEO/President of the LVCVA; Virginia Valentine, President of the Nevada Resort
“Being named a Super Bowl host city is a defining moment in the history of Las Vegas,” said Steve Hill, CEO and president of the LVCVA. “An event of this magnitude combined with the energy of Las Vegas is going to be unmatched. Our entire city is committed to making Super Bowl LVIII the most electrifying -16- | ExtendedWeekendGetaways ~ February, 2024
I - FEB. 11 is an ideal destination for the Super Bowl. Only in Vegas can fans enjoy over-the-top sporting events, an unrivaled lineup of entertainment, world-class culinary offerings and much more in one weekend. With an estimated total economic impact of more than $500 million based on previous Super Bowls, Super Bowl LVIII will significantly benefit the greater Las Vegas area and the entire State of Nevada—through direct spending, additional tax dollar generation, increased room occupancy and job creation. In addition to the total economic impact, the Super Bowl will deliver an unprecedented amount of positive media exposure for the destination and ensure a lasting legacy for the region through a variety of NFL and Host Committee community initiatives over the next two years.
So Who Will Win The Championship? Association; Dan Ventrelle, President of the Las Vegas Raiders; and Steve Zanella, Chief Commercial Officer of MGM Resorts International. As planning begins for the event, additional entities will be asked to join the host committee to expand its reach and representation in the community. “From the moment Allegiant Stadium was approved, we knew it was only a matter of time until Las Vegas welcomed the Super Bowl. We couldn’t be happier about today’s announcement,” said Maury Gallagher, chairman of the Las Vegas Super Bowl Host Committee. “Las Vegas does everything bigger and brighter, and this committee is looking forward to creating a uniquely thrilling experience for fans, players and staff.” As a proven and unparalleled location for large-scale sports and special events, Las Vegas
The matchup for Super Bowl LVIII is set, as the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Championship Game and the San Francisco 49ers beat the Detroit Lions in the NFC Championship Game to advance Sunday. According to the ESPN Matchup Predictor, the San Francisco 49ers have a 50.6% chance of beating the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII. They were the No. 1 seed in the NFC. The Chiefs, who were the No. 3 seed in the AFC, had to get through a pair of road tests on their way to a fourth Super Bowl in five years. After beating the Miami Dolphins in a frigid Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City got past the Buffalo Bills on the road before winning in Baltimore. February, 2024 ~ ExtendedWeekendGetaways | -17-

Crystal Mountain
With a new season comes new features and amenities to make this season better than the last. This year, Crystal Mountain guests will have quicker access to the slopes, lessons they can take home with them, and simply more reasons to enjoy winter in Benzie County. Here’s what’s new this winter at Crystal Mountain: Increased Snowmaking: With the addition of five new snow guns, Crystal Mountain now boasts a total of 177 snowmaking machines. The new Super Puma Snowmakers, from Michigan-based SMI, are exceptionally efficient, producing even more snow than their predecessors, ensuring optimal skiing and snowboarding con-34- | ExtendedWeekendGetaways ~ February, 2024
ditions throughout the season. “What we love about the Super Pumas is the snow quality and the throw,” said Mike Cutler, director of Mountain Operations. “Our goal is to create more snow, more efficiently, and by investing in these automated, high-tech snow guns, our snowmakers can be strategic about when and where to cover the slopes.”
Enhanced Grooming:
The newest addition to the groomer fleet is the PistenBully 400. This state-of-the-art groomer is not only designed to increase productivity but also has the cleanest exhaust technology, meeting Tier 4 Final emission standards. “Our entire grooming fleet now consists of Tier 4 Final
groomers, which exceed the EPA emission standards,” said Cutler. “These newer machines help reduce our carbon footprint because the Tier 4 groomer releases 20 times less the emissions than an older Tier 1 generation groomer.”
Freedom Pass:
For the very first time, Crystal Mountain is proud to offer the Freedom Pass to Premier Passholders. This special passholder perk unlocks the freedom to explore more than 20 resorts across the country, including nearby Caberfae Peaks, for three days with zero blackout dates. This is in addition to the already established reciprocal deal at Mount Bohemia, plus passholders enjoy discounts on lessons, lodging, retail and Crystal Spa.
n Brings New Amenities Introducing Flaik:
Crystal Mountain is taking a significant step towards improving kids’ learning experience on the slopes. “Flaik” utilizes a GPS tag that students will wear during their lessons which allows snowsports instructors to track their progress, and it also gives instructors and parents more peace of mind knowing where the kids are on the slopes. Plus, student progress reports and satisfaction surveys will be included in the “Re-live Your Lesson” follow-up messaging. “We’re excited about implementing Flaik for Crystal’s Snowsports school because it allows kids and their parents to ‘re-live the lesson’ even after the session is over,” said Chris Fisher, director of Snowsports. “The GPS function tracks which runs the kids take during their lesson so when the kids return to the slopes with
their parents, they know which runs they’re comfortable on. Plus, it allows our instructors to know where the student left off and where to pick up in teaching when the student returns for another lesson.” Also new this year, guests can reserve and pay for their lessons online in advance, saving them time at check-in when they arrive at the Mountain
Adventure Zone.
Igloo Dining:
For those looking for a unique dining experience, there will be outdoor igloos available for reservation at the Wild Tomato. The 12-foot diameter domes can fit up to eight people inside to enjoy a special selection of beverages, small plates and sweet treats – including a s’mores kit complete with mini tabletop fire pit. Blankets and a faux fireplace heater keep it extra cozy while overlooking Barr Park and the ice skating rink.
Expanded Backyard Station:
For those participating in Kids Group Lessons, the Backyard Station has been upgraded, now twice its previous size. Just look for the buildings that resemble a train near the Backyard chairlift and that’s where Snowsports students can step February, 2024 ~ ExtendedWeekendGetaways | -35-
inside, warm up and refuel for more learning on the slopes.
Paperless Rental Process:
Fewer lines and quicker access to the slopes – that’s what the new paperless rental process will provide to Crystal Mountain guests. Those who reserve rentals online in advance will get the best price, and when they arrive at the resort they will go straight to a rental tech who will have their information. Those who don’t buy in advance will simply use the laptop at Tickets and Rental to submit their information and receive a barcode to hand to rental techs. “Skier and rider information and waivers will be captured digitally, so guests will spend less time filling out paperwork and more time on the slopes,” said Megan Farfsing, Tickets and Rental manager. “Plus, we’ve expanded our rental fleet this year with more skis, snowboards, helmets, poles and boots!” For the best deal on lift tickets and rental equipment, purchase online in advance.
Cross-Country Webcam:
Know before you go! Crystal Mountain is adding to its fleet of resort webcams with a new live camera at the Cross-Country Center. This is a popular way guests can see for themselves whether or not there’s snow on the ground, if it’s busy, or if there’s a special event happening such as the Fat Chance Fat Tire -36- | ExtendedWeekendGetaways ~ February, 2024
bike race or Airsoft Biathlon.
New Art Park Sculpture:
Winter is a beautiful time of year to explore Michigan Legacy Art Park. The Art Park is home to 50+ sculptures and installations, including the newest addition “Gateway to Black Eden.” The more than 15-foot tall steel artwork, designed by Detroit artist M. Saffell Gardner, is an expression and reflection of the African American lake resort experience in America before the passage of the Civil Rights Act in 1965. USA Today recognized Michigan Legacy Art Park (No. 5) among the 10Best Sculpture Parks in the United States. Every year, the goal is to open for skiing and riding around Thanksgiving. Of course, natural snowfall is the best snowfall, but if Mother Nature doesn’t deliver the white stuff, Crystal snowmaking crews can fire up the snow guns when the temperature, humidity level, and barometric pressure are all just right for a number of consecutive days. As always, the latest weather and trail conditions can be found on the Crystal Mountain Snow Report. Valentine’s Day Specials include a snowsports lesson. Enjoy a delicious prixe fixe dinner at The Thistle. Take advantage of the Crystal Spa specials. For details, see https://www. crystalmountain.com/event/valentines-day/

Rock On at the Ro
By Kathleen Walls Freelance Travel Writer AmericanRoads.net Cleveland’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is an amazing time travel trip into American music. It helps answer the question, what was the first rock and roll song? Sure, it’s about rock and roll, but since rock and roll evolved from blues and country with many other genres adding a touch or two, the museum showcases those early influences including Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Ma Rainey, Robert Johnson, Hank Williams, Bob Willis, and countless other musician whose music led to rock and roll. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame started in April 20, 1983 as an idea by Ahmet Ertegun and Jann Wenner, co-founders of Atlantic Records and Rolling Stone Magazine, respectively. The concept grew and had its first class of inductees in 1986. Elvis Presley, James Brown, Little Richard, Fats Domino, Ray Charles, Chuck Berry, Sam Cooke, the Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly, and Jerry Lee Lewis were inducted. When they decided to open a museum, they considered many locations. Each with a connection to rock and roll. Cleveland won because of Alan Freed, a Cleveland disk jockey. In 1951, he was the first to call the style “Rock and Roll” on the radio, although others had used the term in songs previously.

The unique pyramid style building designed by I.M. Pei, opened in 1995. When you step inside you feel the musical vibe. Their newest exhibit celebrates the 50-year anniversary of hip hop. You move from the roots of rock and roll, early blues, and country music, to Johnny Cash, Elvis and the Beetles. Exhibits showcase music as it evolved in different areas like Detroit, Muscle Shoals, and other places where music made an impact. There are exhibits about soul music, the Fifties, Sun Records, and all the people and places that influenced rock and roll. You’ll see costumes, instruments and other personal artifacts belonging to the musicians. One thing many of us have forgotten and younger people may not know about is explained in the exhibit “Don’t Knock the Rock.” The exhibit has videos and artifacts telling how many politicians and preachers tried to stop rock and roll by calling it evil. Vice President Spiro Agnew was very vocal as were many preachers. They claimed rock and roll corrupted the young. Nothing new, remember, in the late 1800s, fiddling was called “the devil’s music.”
ock and Roll Hall of Fame The second floor is the most interactive. Here you find The Garage where you can pick an instrument to play or get together with friends and jam in a real studio with all the instruments. The third floor is the holy grail, the Hall of Fame. Each year has a list of that years’ inductees. The categories are not only musicians but influencers, and people behind the scenes who move music forward. Visit the Power of Rock Experience in the Connor Theater that showcases some highlights of induction ceremonies. The top two floors hold temporary exhibits. Outside you’ll find Johnny Cash’s tour bus. The bus is open to museum visitors during warmer weather and included in regular Museum admission ticket. The museum has a café for snacks and drinks and a gift shop. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is still growing. It held a groundbreaking on October 5, 2023 for its $135 million, 50,000 square-foot expansion project. The museum will expand by one third,
with the Main Exhibit Hall increasing to nearly 39,000 square feet. The additional room will allow the Rock Hall to hold larger traveling exhibits. They expect it to be completed by late 2025 or early 2026. The museum will remain open during construction. When I visited, I had a question I wanted to see how an expert would answer. What was the first rock and roll song? Jason Hanley, Vice President of Education and Visitor Engagement here and author of We Rock!: A Fun Family Guide for Exploring Rock Music History said, “There isn’t any.” I agree, since so many early songs had equal elements of what we consider rock and roll. Jason pointed out, “One of the earliest songs that has the words ‘rock’ and ‘roll’ in it is a blues song by Trixie Smith in 1922, ‘My Man Rocks Me (With One Steady Roll).’” The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio is one museum every music lover needs to visit.

Nature’s rarest celestial wonder. You owe it to yourself to experience it once in your lifetime. Total solar eclipses are indeed rare and awe-inspiring events. It’s fascinating to know that the last total solar eclipse visible in Ohio was in 1806, and the next one after April will be in 2099. This long gap between total solar eclipses makes each occurrence a special and unique experience for those who get to witness it. Only 21 total solar eclipses have crossed the lower 48 states in the entire existence of the United States. On April 8, 2024 “totality” as it is referred to, will enter Ohio around 3:00 p.m. in the southwest corner of the state and will exit the northeast corner around 3:10 p.m. During that time, those in the path of the total solar eclipse will be cast into darkness. All of Sandusky County will be in the area of totality. Sandusky County will experience 3 minutes 38 seconds of darkness while central and southeast Ohio will experience only seconds of totality or no totality at all. Make the most of a once-in-a-lifetime event and make the drive to Sandusky County. Make it a long weekend, with many eclipse themed events, featuring live music, food and more. You will return home with nothing but memories of good times and nature’s greatest celestial gift. Warm Wishes Love L
Meeting St. Pete Beach was not love at first sight. We’d never met, so it was a blind date. I was hesitant–should I choose neighboring Clearwater? St. Pete had the reputation of being more laid back while Clearwater was a bustling beach with high rises. In the end, I couldn’t resist the five story, flamingo-hued Hilton Garden Inn property directly on the gulf (plus I had reward points). We arrived at night passing some unappealing strip malls before arriving at the hotel. Inside the lobby, a group of men reeked of alcohol and the neighboring motel was playing loud music. Clearly, this was not going to be a match. After a poor first impression, I woke up the next morning to blue-green, Caribbean like water that shimmered with diamonds under the warm Florida sunshine. The room was immaculate and the breeze was gentle. Downstairs in the lobby, smiling families and couples set off for breakfast and the beach. Maybe I’d rushed to conclusions about St. Pete. This Valentine/birthday stay might just be the perfect match. After all, the prospects in Ohio were looking pretty bleak this time of year with their endless dull gray days and icy reception. Turns out -56- | ExtendedWeekendGetaways ~ February, 2024
my extended weekend getaway was a love match.
Matchmaker, Finding Love
As a travel writer, I fashion myself a bit of a matchmaker. I like to introduce people to bright, new experiences that enliven their zest for life. That often means exhaustive research before I even get to my destination. I read countless reviews, make numerous calls, and surf on the web so much that I can hardly wait to see real-live surf! The thing about St. Pete is that there is plenty to fall in love with. Sure, he’s not

perfect–but pretty close to it. What’s more, St. Pete offers something for nature lovers, foodies, culture seekers, adventurers, and yes of course, miles of endless beautiful beach.
Resorts on St. Pete Beach
What’s special about St. Pete Beach is its walkability. You can easily spend the day exploring nearby resorts. Each one has a distinct personality with activities and restaurants that make them worth a visit. Our Hilton was cozy, beachy, and bright. Most of all, the reviews all commented on cleanliness, ranking highest on my list for choosing a place to stay. The RumFish Beach Resort
is next door to the Hilton and is a destination in itself. One of my best moments of the trip happened here– a birthday dinner inside The RumFish Grill. This intimate restaurant is surrounded by a 33,500 gallon aquarium. Make sure to watch Animal Planet’s TANKED before visiting to better appreciate the size and scope of the aquarium. There’s something both calming and joyful about dining amongst stingrays and tropical fish. Choose from locally-sourced seafood and other specialty entrees. If you don’t care about carbs, then the warm basket of rolls is pure comfort. The hotel’s art is worth checking out too. Marine-inspired paintings and murals by Florida’s famous artist, Thomas Krause celebrate manatees, dolphins,
and other native wildlife. The Tradewinds operates The RumFish Beach Resort and the sister property a short stroll away, the Island Grand. The exterior has palms, lush landscaping, and lagoons interspersed with restaurants and gift shops. Here you can have a fruity drink tucked away in a lagoon and watch white ibis. Waterways twist throughout the property, and the people watching is fun– spy resort guests paddle boating under bridges and families playing a round of mini golf. Farther down the beach is St. Pete’s “Pink Palace,” The Don CeSar. This opulent pastel beauty opened in 1928. gesture. The Don oozes romance and elegance with a world-class spa and highend dining. For me, The Don symbolized a giant pink birthday cake surrounded by delicious, sugar-white sands. Although a day of swimming and walking did not leave me looking presentable to dine at The Don, I did savor a scoop of complimentary birthday ice cream as the sun melted behind the ocean.
St. Petersburg vs. St. Pete Beach
The first few days were all about the beach. Before leaving, we had to head to St. Petersburg the city (not to be confused with St. Pete Beach). The two are on opposite sides and quite different. Depending on traffic, it’s about a 20 minute drive from the beach to the city. The focal point is the St. Pete Pier that reaches out to Tampa Bay. The modern architecture fits the vibe of the city. Live music pulses from the rooftop bar with tikis. Five-levels fit in a marine education center, dining, and retail in this angular beauty with massive windows and overlooks. I timed my visit with the local farmer’s market. Sadly, they were packing up by the time I made it there. There was still time to do a quick walk around to get a feel for the market. Every inch of St. Petersburg was buzzing. That Saturday brought a regatta festival and a marine biology expo for kids. We only had time to breeze past The Dali (Salvador Dali Museum), only so much time on an extended President’s Day weekend).
Fond Farewell
Now, I look back fondly on my brief time with St. Pete Beach. Ah, the long walks with bare feet on sugar-soft sand. The way the blue-green waters sparkled. The way the sun kissed my face. The sherbert-colored sunsets. I’ll never forget the 72 hours we spent together. Until we meet again, warmest wishes and love, St. Pete Beach. -58- | ExtendedWeekendGetaways ~ February, 2024

The Race Is On For
DAWSONVILLE—Folks carrying moonshine in the north Georgia town of Dawsonville knew the importance of outrunning law enforcement during the Prohibition days of the 1930s. They needed to soup up their cars for speed and did so to their advantage. Their ingenuity continued after Prohibition was repealed and alcohol sales were legal again. But that need for speed prevailed and stock car racing became a sport. Dawsonville’s early racing days eventually led to the creation of NASCAR, with some of the biggest names hailing from Dawsonville. It’s why today the town is considered the birthplace of NASCAR, home to racing greats Bill and Chase Elliott, Raymond Parks, Red Vogt, Roy Hall, Gober Sosebee and Lloyd Seay.
Georgia Racing Hall of Fame
Visitors will receive an overview of Dawsonville’s racing history, from its early moonshine origins to NASCAR’s stars at the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame (415 Highway 53 East, Dawsonville, Georgia 30534; 706-216-7223). Established in 2002 as a showplace for the history of motorsports in the region, the museum features both original and replica racers from the 1940s to today. There’s also the Elliott Family Room, showcasing the triumphs of award-winning NASCAR drivers Bill “Awesome Bill from Dawsonville” Elliott and his son, Chase Elliott. In addition, the museum hosts the Racing Hall of Fame, dedicated to honoring the influential figures of the sport.

Stick to traditional or try a new version – just be sure to have at least one slice this month. Some bakeries offer national and international shipping so that everyone can enjoy a king cake from New Orleans. You’ll see dressage winners, all the horse gear (spurs, saddles, etc.) that ranch women use, learn about equine therapy, and the Las Azaleas, a “team of young Mexican American horsewomen who guide their horses, sidesaddle, through highspeed, choreographed performances known as escaramuzas.” While walking around reading about these amazing women, you can enjoy the interactive horse display that winds around the whole floor. In its 15th annual season, Sherwood broke attendance records each weekend of 2022 then continued the trend through 2023. Sherwood Forest Faire is a Medieval Festival based on the tales of Robin Hood and his Merry Band set in a 25-acre permanent village in the Lost Pines region of Bastrop County just 35 miles east of Austin. Sherwood Forest Faire holds more than 100 permanent buildings, 170 artisans & merchants, and 150 shows per day. The 2024 Entertainment Line-up is on the website at www.SherwoodForestFaire.com and updated each week of the faire to show stages for performances. Visitors will see returning favorites, such as Sky King’s Falconry, the Washing Well Wenches, Judas & Magnolia Escape Artists, and the New Riders of the Golden Age full contact jousting. In keeping with Austin’s spirit as the Live Music Capital of America, Sherwood hosts at least 10 live music acts each weekend including The Inheritance, Master Bones, The Bedlam Bards, and The Jackdaws. The final 3 weekends in April will see the return of pipes and drums bands The CRAIC and Tartanic. Sherwood’s artisan marketplace is extraordinary. You can meet many of the 170 artisans making hand crafted items such as jewelry, hand blown glass, leather boots, medieval and renaissance clothing, fine art, swords, chainmail armor, wooden mugs, and more. The Sherwood Players spin a tale of history and legend that changes each season. It
is now the year of our Lord 1192 and King Richard the Lionheart and King Philippe of France are off on a holy crusade. Will the Queen Mother, Eleanor of Aquitaine, and the bold Robin Hood be able to keep the dastardly Prince John in check? Sherwood Forest Faire is located 35 miles East of Austin on Highway 290 between McDade and Paige Texas. Daily admission is $24 + tax for adults and $14 + tax for ages 6-12. You can buy daily and season passes at https://www.SherwoodForestFaire.com/Tickets. For directions and more information on Sherwood Forest Faire, visit: www.SherwoodForestFaire.com.

the National Cherry Blossom Festival transforms the city with unique events – from petal-themed parties to parades – each one a celebration of the flowers that bring a vibrant pink energy to life. More specifically we’re looking forward to Mother Nature’s gift of beauty in our nation’s capital each spring – cherry blossoms!
It’s thanks to these beautiful blooms that we have the National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington DC each year. For those that may not be familiar, let’s start with a little history lesson because these trees are not just pretty – they’ve got a cool backstory. Over a century ago, in 1912, the mayor of Tokyo City gifted Washington DC a remarkable symbol of friendship. The gift? Thirty-two hundred Japanese cherry trees, spanning twelve different varieties. Thanks to this generous act, each spring the city blooms into a spectacular sea of pink. It took some time, 23 years in fact, for the first Cherry Blossom Festival to kick off. But boy, was it worth the wait! Now, every year,

The Gullah have been identified as inhabiting the coast of North and South Carolina while those who live on Georgia and the Sea Islands and Florida’s coast are referred to as Geechee. In the early 1700s slaves were imported into the Low Country in small numbers but, spurred by the need for laborers, the 1790 census shows that 75% of Charleston’s population was enslaved. South Carolina’s crops, indigo, Carolina Gold rice and Sea Island cotton, required intense labor and enduring severe conditions. Two-thirds of the enslaved born in the Low Country did not live to become 16-years old. The vast majority were Africans from West and Central Africa captured because they already had rice growing and metalworking skills. The IAAM presents an outstanding introduction to the slave’s experience and the enduring aspects of the culture that they brought with them. There are 12 permanent exhibits and 9 galleries. The galleries include Gullah Geechee, the TransAtlantic Experience and a Geneaology section. #IAAM Charleston built a lazaretto in 1707 and it was used as an isolation house to inspect slaves prior to entry into the population. They were held from 10 to 40 days. The first house in the area was built on Sullivan’s Island. The structure was made of brick, had no windows or ceiling and was 30’X16’. Unruly and recalcitrant enslaved were thrown overboard at the lazarettos. The buildings are no longer standing.

Valentine’s Vacation
As you plan for your next family vacation, you may consider a winter travel experience this Valentine’s Day. A ski vacation is a beautiful way to make family memories. Whether your group consists of multi-ability level skiers or those just starting to learn the sport, skiing is an incredible way to appeal to each family member. It’s also a wonderful multi-generational getaway that everyone will love. My husband and I put our twin girls on skis when they were three years old, and after a few lessons and a bit of practice, they never looked back. 23 years later, we continue to ski as a family and always look forward to spending time on the slopes. The non-skiers in our group enjoy other snow-related activities like cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, or just relaxing by the fire. And, after our day, we all reconnect, sharing our experiences over some delicious food and cocktails après ski.
Great For Families
Where should you spend your ski vacation? That’s a great question. The answer depends on choosing the right resort for your needs. A family-friendly resort like Granby Ranch in Granby, Colorado, caters to different ability levels, providing the opportunity to offer more advanced skiers challenging runs and novice -106- | ExtendedWeekendGetaways ~ February, 2024
skiers a place to learn in a comfortable environment dedicated to giving them confidence on the slopes. Even if you don’t want to downhill ski but love the snow, there are cross-country trails and several other alpine experiences to enjoy the outdoors at the resort and around Grand County. Granby Ranch is 90 miles west of Denver, an easy one-hour and thirty-minute car ride from Denver International Airport. This intimate resort offers 406 skiable acres with 38 trails across two mountains–The East Mountain at 9,202 feet elevation and the West Mountain at 9166 feet with a vertical drop of 1,000 feet. The East Mountain is geared for novice to intermediate skiers, and the West offers challenging black diamond runs for the advanced skiers in your group. There are plenty of runs but the trails are laid out so that they all lead back to the base lodge. Due to its size, there are fewer crowds at Granby Ranch, and no one will get lost if you split up to access different

attention in a group setting. What’s nice about Granby Ranch is that even if you are already a skier, you can hone your skills and tricks at a multi-day camp to level up your abilities. On specific nights, you can enjoy skiing under the lights at East Mountain– an exhilarating experience.
Dining and Snacks At The Base Lodge
The best part about this Colorado ski resort is that you can reconnect quickly with your group. If you have a child in ski school and older teens or skiers on the East or West Mountain, you can all meet up in the middle for coca breaks, a quick snack, or a sit-down lunch at the base lodge. When hunger strikes, you can ski by the GR Food Truck at the base of the mountain or enjoy a sit-down meal at the Slopeside Dining Hall, offering tacos, nachos, barbeque, or family-friendly favorites like chicken fingers. They also have classes for older novice skiers, lessons for adult beginners, and private lessons for skiing and snowboarding instruction. The groups are small, so you will enjoy individualized

Activities For Non-Skiers
If you like to play in the snow but aren’t interested in skiing, Granby Ranch offers guided snowshoe tours–a great way to immerse yourself in nature.
