MIRACLEBABY

Recap: I had a baby girl, but she was born extremely early and the doctors are warning that she most probably won’t survive.

I sit next to little Chayala and watch her tiny chest rise and fall, rise and fall as the ventilator pumps oxygen into her body. We chose the name Chaya as a tefilla, beseeching Hashem that this precious child should be granted life.

I glance around and notice the doctors making their rounds. As they near Chayala’s incubator, I draw in a deep breath and try to steady my shaking hands. I’m not sure why I’m so nervous, as there has been no change in her condition since she was born 2 days ago, but for some reason I’m getting the jitters.

The doctors check her, then turn to me with grave looks on their faces. I guess those jitters came from a mothers’

sixth sense.

“Your baby has bleeding in her brain,” one doctor says. “If she lives, she will not be a functioning person. She will not be able to walk or talk.”

The words hit me like a ton of bricks. She will not be able to walk, talk, move, live life. The adorable two-yearold I was imagining in my mind, singing and running and tantruming and playing, morphs into the image of a pale, doll-like child leaning against a white hospital bed, still and unmoving. Grief, sadness, and disappointment battle with the sliver of hope still left in me, the one that whispers that doctors have been wrong before, and they are not prophets who know exactly what will happen in the future. I’m not even sure that I should hope. The doctors sound so sure of themselves, and then, if (when?) things turn out like they said, I will be left to sweep up the

I guess those jitters came from a mothers’ sixth sense.

remnants of my shattered dreams.

A week later:

Today is a very special day. I will be able to hold Chayala for the very first time! The ventilator is finally being removed, and I am getting a chance to hold her, 9 long days after she was born. I bounce into the NICU.

“The doctors will be here soon to remove the ventilator,” the nurse informs me.

I go over to Chayala’s incubator and inform her that she will be held by Mommy today. The little bundle doesn’t respond, but I’m sure she is excited.

Truth be told, hiding behind all my excitement is a little twinge of nervousness. Chayala is so tiny, fragile and delicate. She can literally fit into my hand! I’ve held newborns before, but this is a completely different experience. I never before held a breathing human who fits into the palm of my hand.

Half an hour later, Chayala is gently placed into my hands. I gaze at the innocent little being. She is practically see-through, her veins crisscrossing her body in clearly visible lines, pumping blood and oxygen to and from her heart in a valiant effort to stay alive. She weighs less than a pound, less than those one-pound containers you can buy in the takeout section, less than a fifth of a bag of flour. She reminds me of a feather – light and delicate and easily blown away by just a wisp of wind.

I stroke her cheek and feel tears bubbling up inside me, rising up from my heart until the edges of my eyelids, where, despite my best efforts, they come spilling out across my face. There are tears of happiness and of sadness, of hope and of despair, of love and of disappointment. My emotions rage and clash, each vying for my attention. The happiness and joy of finally getting to hold and cuddle my newborn, my precious little baby, dances around the sadness of the circumstances. The hope and dreams for the future are clouded with grim predictions from the doctors like a sunny blue sky marred by big black storm clouds. The intense, overwhelming love I feel for Chayala is tinged with disappointment - things are not perfect, and they may never be. She may never be a normal child, a normal adult, a normal person. If she makes it through, she may very possibly be handicapped in all sorts of ways.

Right now, though, I try my best to push all thoughts of the future out of my mind and focus on the here and now. Right here, right now, I am holding my Chayala! Her skin is velvety soft, like butter, and her miniature features are so incredibly endearing, I just can’t take my eyes off her.

I sit there, clutching my precious baby as tight as I dare, for three hours. This is a unique opportunity - I do not know when I will be able to hold her next. • TO BE CONTINUED

Yahadus notebook belonging to eleven-year old Surele, last page:

-Roizy, what happened to Morah Naomi? She’s not feeling well?

-I guess not. A minute ago, she got confused and said chametz instead of matzah.

-And at the beginning of the lesson, after she came back and was shaking and sat for a few minutes till she started to teach, she told us we’re waiting to go out to galus instead of to the Geulah. Did you notice?

- Sure. And it’s not like her to get confused twice in one lesson!

-Should we ask her what happened to her?

- You think that’s nice? Is it okay for us to ask?

-I don’t know, but I think we have to.

-Why do we have to?

-Because otherwise what we wrote here is just lashon hara, and if we ask her what happened it will be that we spoke lashon hara l’toeles.

“It’s not so simple to speak lashon hara l’toeles,” the voice of Morah Naomi said above them. The girls recoiled and then blushed. “You have to plan it ahead of time, before you talk, and there are a few conditions that must be met. But it’s fine, I forgive you. I see that you are really worried about me.”

“Do you feel okay?” Roizy asked timorously.

“You’re right, I’m not myself. But it will pass soon, b’ezras

“Until tomorrow?” Rikvu asked, and Naomi grasped at once: she was worried about the hours she might have to fill in tomorrow.

“Of course.” Surele’s blush deepened, and she grabbed her eraser. “In a minute, nothing will be

Naomi smiled at them again, with effort, and then went to the bench on the other end of the large room before they could ask her again what had happened to her. She could feel more eyes fixed on her back; she didn’t allow herself to turn around to see who it was. She just hoped no one was following

Apparently it was only Katy, hurrying toward her with a cup of tea. “Naomi, take it!” she said. “Are you sick, maybe? You don’t feel too

“I don’t know what happened to me,” Naomi murmured, sitting down heavily

Rivku was also approaching. “In the morning you looked fine,” she said in a tone that was hard

She smiled at Rivku. “I really think I’ll be fine. It’s not anything serious. Just…a bit of dizziness.”

Katy whispered something to Rivku; Naomi couldn’t hear her even if she would have wanted to. In any case, she didn’t want to. The children were playing nicely in the room, not really noticing what was happening. Only the older girls were a bit concerned, and Naomi well understood why. It had been a rough winter, and the infirmary had been occupied by too many people. B’chasdei Shamayim, everyone had recovered, but the fears remained ingrained in all of them.

But maybe this evening was too dangerous for him to come to their house

“I felt fine then,” Naomi replied. “So what happened?” Katy fretted. “Maybe you have a stomach bug?”

“I really don’t know. It’s like this weakness…” Naomi closed her eyes and leaned on the wall behind her.

“Should I call your grandmother?” Rivku asked.

“No, no need. I’ll recover, with

“Alright,” she said aloud, forcing herself to stand up. For them. “What’s with lunch? Whose turn is it to help with that today?”

She saw immediately how her practical question released a burden that was weighing down her students. “Me!” Zuska announced, exchanging relieved glances with the others. She went out to the small kitchen with two other girls. When they came back with the steaming pots, they brought a guest with them. Naomi stifled a sigh. She loved her grandmother, and there had been no way to warn the girls not to tell Babbe anything about the way she was feeling. But—it was so hard to hide things from her grandmother.

“I came to fulfill the mitzvah of bikur cholim,” Babbe said. “But I see that baruch Hashem, the situation isn’t so bad. Naomi, is that right?”

“Yes, it was something very…short.”

“You need to make sure to rest enough,” her grandmother said. “You’re not putting in overtime, are you? There’s no such thing in the preschool.”

Naomi smiled at Rivku. “There is sometimes, and actually, it’s Rivku who does it.”

“But that doesn’t mean that I’m here more than I’m supposed to be,” Rivku hurried to clarify. “I’m just here sometimes in place of both of us, but that’s fine. It’s nice to do favors for Naomi.”

“Because she’s so nice,” Katy announced, “and then she gives back to Rivku every minute that she was left alone.”

“Good, so everything is fine.” Babbe smiled and turned to leave. Naomi escorted her to the door, and only there did Babbe ask quietly, “Have you had lots of urgent errands recently, Naomi?”

“Do I have to tell you, Babbe?” her granddaughter asked defensively. “You’re aware of most times when I leave. And it’s not so many. It’s just…accumulating.”

“I just hope that the ones I’m not aware of are not the kind that are better off not happening.”

Naomi didn’t answer. She sufficed with a smile, though she had no idea how Babbe would interpret it. If Binyamin had any complaints with that, she’d send him to their wise Babbe himself, so he could remember how impossible it was to hide anything from her.

The truth was, maybe—

A new thought popped into Naomi’s head, like a flower popping up between melting chunks of snow. Maybe it wasn’t worth hiding the information? Maybe they should consult with someone about it, and if so…was it worth it for that someone to be Babbe?

Naomi went back into the classroom, reminding herself that Aryeh and Binyamin had not yet heard about the phone call. Suzy

had heard a small part, but not the rest…

She took a deep breath. The heavy stone that had been sitting on her heart, which had lifted a bit because of the responsibility she felt for her students, suddenly sank down again more forcefully, and Naomi felt physically ill. She slowly walked over to pour herself a cup of water, not knowing how she would make it to the end of the day.

It was a good thing Babbe had left already.

She sipped from her cup of water, trying to think how to let Binyamin know what she had heard this morning. She wouldn’t write a word, not even in their secret code; it was too dangerous.

It was safe to assume that Binyamin would find himself a way to get to her. But maybe this evening was too dangerous for him to come to their house. She’d already attracted too much attention with her absence and her not feeling well.

And the boy! The boy who’d come to her house to give Suzy the broken telephone!

How many people at the factory already knew that she’d spent some of the morning hours with Suzy Elkovitz?

A dark cloud of danger swam before Naomi’s eyes, but she didn’t let herself collapse to the floor. Not here. Not near everyone. If she’d faint, in addition to everything else, everyone in the camp would know something was up. And the danger would increase manifold.

Naomi blinked rapidly, fighting the fog. It was actually obedient, and slowly dissipated. She leaned on the wall, forcing herself to take deep breaths. The girls were giving out the food on plates, and she knew they needed her help; otherwise, in another minute, the bickering would begin.

The sun peeked in at her through the barred window high up on the wall. She wouldn’t be afraid now, because fear was useless. She’d think about the sun that Hashem sent them morning after morning, and about the sweet children who were here and waiting for her, and

not about anything else. Especially not about the earthshattering information that she’d heard today on the phone, and about what Wangel would do if he’d find out about this call.

***

Bentzy exchanged a worried look with his father. “I’ve never heard of such a newspaper,” he said. They were both sitting on upholstered executive chairs, discussing the information they’d just received from the secretary.

“That doesn’t mean anything, of course,” his father replied. “But it’s true that the name of the paper sounds bad. Something trying to be too cosmic and worldly doesn’t bring good things with it, for the most part.”

“And her questions were crazy!” Bentzy tapped his pen on the glass pane that covered the wooden desk.

“Wehrmacht! SS!” He fell silent suddenly. “On the other hand, she did not speak respectfully of them.”

“Maybe it really is someone confused, who is living in the past…”

“So what’s her connection to the newspaper whose name she mentioned? Is she a crazy lady living in delusion, or a journalist?”

“Maybe in the past she was forced to write for this newspaper,” his father said slowly, “and it also no longer exists.”

“You mean that being a journalist is part of her delusions?”

“Something like that.”

They both were quiet for a long moment.

“So we can check if during the period of Nazi rule there was a newspaper called Der Cosmos,” Bentzy suggested. “I’ll call Hershy Kop. He’s half a historian, and is very knowledgeable about anything relating to the Holocaust.”

Ten minutes later, they had an answer. There was no such paper, certainly not to an extent that was known.

“And today?” Bentzy pressed his friend.

“Today? Maybe. You know how many crazy, delusional newspapers there are?”

“Anti-Semitic ones?”

“That, too,” Hershy said.

When the call ended, Bentzy and his father sat there, feeling that it hadn’t given them too much to go on. On the contrary, it had just left bigger questions unanswered.

“You know what?” his father said, standing up suddenly. “I know someone in the national telephone exchange. I can ask him to get me the number where she called from, and then I can call them back myself. Then we’ll know more about this newspaper: what its agenda is, and who the journalist who called here today might be.”

S S STRATEGIES FOR OPTIMUM SUCCESS

THE WORRIED CHILD

Fear.

Anxiety.

Fright.

Stress.

Are they all four words for the same thing? In this book, The Worried Child: Recognizing Anxiety in Children and Helping Them Heal, Dr. Paul Foxman explains that fear, anxiety, fright, and stress while related, all have slightly different meanings. Once we understand their definitions, we can figure out which feelings are unavoidable and which are controllable.

Let’s start with some definitions:

Fear: an instinctive reaction to clear and present danger or threat

Anxiety: a state of apprehension or worry about a danger or threat that may occur

Fright: state of fear when danger or threat catches us by surprise

Stress: any situation (positive or negative) that requires adjustment or change

Fear is part of our survival instincts. Our body goes “fight or flight” mode. This happens without thinking about it, instead or body takes over and prepares by tensing muscles, increasing the heart rate, sharpening vision and hearing, and intensifying breathing. All of these changes allow our body to fight the threat or run quickly from

it. These physical changes, once triggered by danger, cannot be easily stopped.

How do children (and adults) go from fear to anxiety? When children have repeated reactions to fear, due to frequent threats or stresses, this recurring “fight or flight” reaction can lead to symptoms such as difficulty concentrating, memory impairment, and anxiety. Anxiety is the fear of fear. Anxiety tends to develop after a child experiences a traumatic situation. At first, they have the fear reaction (fight or flight), but the lasting repercussions may include persistent worry, concern or dread. Multiple fear reactions, when not discussed and untreated, can lead to anxiety.

I have shared a partial list of the potential “external” causes for anxiety that Dr. Foxman mentions. An external cause is something that happens in the child’s environment, rather than within the child himself. Many of these causes for anxiety make sense to us as parents, but some might be surprising:

If a piece of personal property is stolen from the child

If the child experiences a serious or painful injury

If a parent is ill and therefore incapacitated in some way

If the child is a victim of bullying, or witness someone being bullied

IF THEY DON'T LEARN THE WAY WE TEACH, WE MUST TEACH THEM THE WAY THEY LEARN Rifka Schonfeld, Director

1542 East 19th St Brooklyn, NY 11230

718.382.5437

rifkaschonfeldsos.com

There can also be internal triggers. Internal triggers are situations that occur within the child himself. Two types of internal triggers are strong emotions and cognitive patterns. How can strong emotions trigger anxiety? If a child experiences extreme anger or excitement, these emotions can feel like a fear reaction. As a child, it is hard to distinguish between external danger and strong internal emotions. Therefore, children who go from “low to high” and back again can also develop anxiety. Another trigger can be negative cognitive patterns such as perfectionism, pessimistic thinking, and all-or-nothing thinking. These repeated thoughts can lead children to develop high levels of anxiety about the future or their self-worth.

Dr. Foxman believes that there are three ingredients that explain how, why, and when anxiety develops. First, he believes that children have biological sensitivity or inherited characteristics.

Second, he believes that you develop an anxious temperament based on your early life experience. Those with an “anxiety personality profile” have some of these characteristics:

Strong sense of responsibility

High standards of achievement

Difficulty relaxing

A BUTCHER WITH THE CHOPS TO PROVE IT

Under new management, our butcher department has been revamped to serve you better! From our new Hashgacha to an upgraded selection of premium cuts, Mehadrin’s butcher will meat and exceed your expectations.

Tendency to worry

Tendency to please others

Difficulty with assertiveness

Oversensitivity to criticism and rejection

Third, he believes that stress induces this anxiety to come out. Stress is the “when” piece of the puzzle, inducing anxiety when changes need to take place.

There are multiple different anxiety disorders in children including separation anxiety disorder, avoidant disorder, overanxious disorder, social phobia, post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, and panic disorder. While some worry and anxiety is normal, it is a problem if it interferes with the child’s daily functioning. If you find your child is struggling with anxiety on a frequent and intense basis, getting him evaluated will help him and you live happier lives.

Whether your child is suffering from an anxiety disorder or just plain anxiety, there are still many things you can do in order to help control the anxiety. As a general rule, distinguish between what is in our control and what is out of our control. We can control ourselves, but not those around us. Unpredictability and uncertainty are associated with anxiety. So you choose how to spend your time, how to maintain your relationships, how to care for your children, and live according to your core values.

Some other tips:

Rest. When you sleep, your body relaxes. Help your child get as much sleep as his body needs.

Exercise. Exercise relieves stress and fights anxiety. Get your child kicking a ball or running around the track.

Proper nutrition. Highly processed or sugary foods can feed anxiety. Eat foods that are high in vitamin B and low-fat proteins.

Sweet Deals, For The Entire City To Chew On!

Hi all! I am thrilled to be featured in these pages. It was heartwarming to see the enthusiastic response to this new column as close to 200 emails came pouring in.

As an organizer, there are many things that I wish I can yell from the rooftops. So here’s my chance and you can be sure that I plan to use it! Mainly, what I always wanted to say was that organizing is something that every person is capable of doing. Its practical and its simple. This is really what I'd like to focus on in this series.

Let's break it down by what being organized is and of course, what its not:

We cannot begin anything without discussing organization in its simple definition. Oxford dictionary defines organization as, “ To arrange something or parts of something in a particular order.”

Lets start by what its not. Its not having the fruits and veggies in your fridge lined up by color. And its not that sister in law of yours that just has it all together. (She doesn’t, BTW). Being organized can be many things. Since we are discussing it in the context of your home I’ll define it as such. In simple, a home that is organized is a home that has an order and a system for how things are placed and how it is run.

When items have a clear and specific home, you and your family members will more likely place it where it belongs rather than dumping it on the next available flat surface,

The simple no- fuss method to organizing any space:

There is a very simple method to organizing any space. It doesn’t require any genius mind or massive creativity. Just follow these steps and watch the miracle take place!

1. EMPTY - and when I say empty, I mean EMPTY! You want that space fully cleared out.

Ok, Deep breaths now…

2. TOSS - What you are looking to throw out includes:

A. Items that are ruined (That doll that’s missing a head or the marker that doesn’t work. Face it-They ain't coming back to life very soon)

B. Items that are expired

C. Items that you have no need for. You can of course donate things that are in good condition.

3. SORT - Divide your items into separate categories or zones. I will address all categories throughout this series.

4. PLACE - You want every item to have a designated home. Place products in the most practical places. For example, your spices will be near the oven, etc. For best results, use bins and containers so that it stays contained.

5. LABEL - This is a biggie, yet very often overlooked. Once you have a label it is clear to all where everything belongs.

Follow along with me as I do exactly this in Leah’s kitchen:

Meet Leah, and the kitchen that she just cannot get enough of:

In my first conversation with Leah, she solemnly asked me to come wearing a blindfold. I so appreciated her confidence in my abilities! I explained to her as I explain to all my clients- we women are juggling so many balls. And may I just say that we all are so so amazing?! It makes sense that some things like magazineworthy pantries just don’t make it to the top of our list of priorities.

Leah is a full time working mother with a couple of young children at home. We decided to tackle her kitchen since that is a place that she spends lots of hours in.

Follow along as I show you how we transformed her kitchen into something beautiful yet practical. Below are some of the categories that will be found in every kitchen.

NOSH/SNACK CABINET:

1. Leah and her family are obsessed with all kinds of candy. She has a big selection of candies and sweets. We collected all the candies from around the kitchen and sorted them. We decided to display her family’s favorite candies as she uses them as incentives and treats. Let's hope that bedtime goes smoother ;)

2. Since she has such a large selection, we placed the overflow of candies in a bin right nearby.

3. We placed her snack bags in bins that are just a bit transparent. The purpose being so that she can see if she needs to buy more but the mess isn’t visible.

PANTRY CABINET:

The reason I call this the pantry cabinet, is because Leah doesn’t have a specific pantry. We designated one of her cabinets to act as a pantry.

Some common categories that you will find in a pantry includes; Pasta, Grains, Baking, Cereals, Crackers, Matzah, Sauces and Condiments, Oils.

The categories that you see in the picture is specific to Leahs family. For instance, you will not find a grain of rice in her home. In other client’s homes, I often have to designate a separate bin or two for rice.

1. I used 10x6x5 clear acrylic bins (every organizers favorite due to its great dimensions and multi-use) for all the categories.

2. Leah is not a big baker so we kept the baking ingredients higher up as she doesn’t need easy access to it.

3. I placed a turntable for the items that Leah uses all the time. The rest of her spices were placed in a separate cabinet.

4. Leahs children enjoy pasta, so we kept that lower down.

Occupational Therapy and Behavioral Optometry a Collaborative Approach

Vision, the primary mode of learning integrates with proprioception (body awareness) and vestibular function ( awareness of body in space) to enable a person to freely explore within the spatial world. The collaborative approach of Occupational Therapy and Behavioral Optometry explores common goals and outcomes related to learning and sensory motor development and ultimate behavior.

Treatment strategies of these two professionals often overlap and in so doing can hasten the course of treatment and subsequently, can enhance the expectations of the other.

Increased intervention for school aged children, especially with mild neurologic signs affecting development and learning, has put significant pressure on both Occupational Therapists and Behavioral Optometrists to resolve and/or remediate dysfunction within each of their domain.

Occupational Therapists have routinely been taught a superficial visual assessment based

on an elementary understanding of its function. The occupational therapist can regularly identify abnormalities in the visual system, yet the therapist is rarely able to understand what effect those abnormalities will have on function and strategies needed for remediation.

ODA’s Center for Advanced Vison Care has developed a program to address the ability of these two professions to be better able to engage in conjoined treatment for these children.

Special needs programs centered throughout the Brooklyn area have been invited to engage in a three-hour workshop presentation educating Occupational Therapists in vision therapy practice. This program is being spearheaded by Esther Gurell O.D. and vision therapy assistants of the Advanced Vision Care service.

Guided vision therapy techniques are being taught to be utilized in occupational therapy programs to both enhance function and expectations in remediation.

Postpartum Support

True episodes From people like you. Who've seen REAL RESULTS.

The days and weeks passed after the birth of my baby, yet I still felt very weak both physically and emotionally. Every little noise or disturbance irritated me, and my moods were worryingly unbalanced. When the Adreno supplement was recommended, I decided to try taking it. Unbelievably, within a short time, I saw a major difference in both areas. I finally regained my previous strength and stamina and felt like a vibrant wife and mother again

Tahua Explains: Our Adrenal Gland helps us deal with stress. It is designed to kick in and help handle emergencies and not meant to be relied on for everyday living. When the body is in a state of adrenal coping, this gland will overwork and not be able to function properly. Adreno is formulated with herbs that boost the Adrenal gland so the body can regenerate and function properly.

BE FIT WITH BENEFIT

AQI am a healthy teenager of average weight and height. I love fruits immensely. Is there such a thing as eating too many fruits a day? I can have 2-3 apples, melons, berries, mango and grapes in a day. Is this something I should be weary of? Should I be limiting my fruit intake? Can this cause a sugar issue or weight gain?

With Tu’bshvat in the air, this is a perfect time to address the topic of fruits!

Fruits are often seen as the ultimate health food—packed with vitamins, minerals, fiber, and antioxidants. If you’re a healthy teenager of average weight and height and love fruit, you might wonder: is there such a thing as too much? Can excessive fruit consumption lead to sugar issues or weight gain? Let’s break it down: Fruits provide essential nutrients like vitamin C, potassium, fiber, and various antioxidants that help support overall health. The natural sugars found in fruit, primarily fructose, are different from added sugars in processed foods because they come packaged with fiber and nutrients that slow down absorption and provide lasting energy. Truly a gift from Hashem.

The recommended daily intake of fruit for teenagers is about 1.5 to 2 cups per day, according to the USDA. However, this doesn’t mean that slightly exceeding this amount is necessarily harmful. Your body’s needs depend on your activity level, metabolism, and overall diet. If you are very active, you might require more fruit to support energy demands. What works for one does not necessarily work for another.

That said, eating excessive amounts—such as multiple apples, melons, berries, mangoes, and grapes in one day— could have some potential downsides:

1. Sugar overload – While fruit sugars are natural, consuming large amounts in a short period can lead to spikes in blood sugar. This could be a concern if paired with other high-sugar foods or if you experience energy crashes.

2. Caloric excess – Although fruit is lower in calories compared to processed snacks, eating excessive amounts could contribute to weight gain if it leads to an overall calorie surplus, as with any healthy food one may be eating.

3. Digestive issues – Too much fiber, especially from highfiber fruits like apples and berries, can cause bloating, gas, or diarrhea.

For most healthy teenagers, there’s no need to strictly limit fruit intake, but balance is key. If you’re eating a variety of foods—vegetables, proteins, whole grains, and healthy fats—alongside your fruit consumption, you’re likely in a good range. If you notice signs of sugar cravings, fatigue, or digestive discomfort, it might be a signal to scale back slightly. Always listen to your body.

Tips for healthy fruit consumption:

• Pair with protein or healthy fats – Eating fruit with nuts (in moderation), yogurt, or cheese can help slow sugar absorption and keep energy levels stable.

• Vary your choices –Rotate different fruits to get a broad range of nutrients instead of sticking to the same ones daily.

• Watch portions of high-sugar fruits – Grapes, mangoes, and bananas are higher in sugar, so consider balancing them with lower-sugar options like berries or citrus fruits.

• Listen to your body – If you feel sluggish or experience energy crashes, assess your intake and make adjustments accordingly.

The GI is an important concept when it comes to understanding how certain foods affect blood sugar levels in your body. The glycemic index measures how quickly carbohydrates from food enter your bloodstream and raise your blood glucose level or “blood sugar”. Foods with higher GIs will cause spikes in blood sugar more rapidly than those with lower GIs, which can be beneficial for some people who need quick energy but not ideal for others trying to control their diabetes or maintain healthy weight management goals. Different types of fruit have different GI ratings on the scale ranging from low (55 or less), medium (56–69) and high (70+). Generally speaking, most fresh fruits tend to fall into either the low/medium range unless they are processed like dried dates, raisins and pineapple which typically have higher GIs due to their concentrated sugars. For example, apples generally rank at 38 while banana has 52 making it slightly more likely to cause a spike in your blood sugar levels compared to apples if eaten alone without other foods like nuts & seeds providing slower releasing carbs helping balance out its impact on insulin response times. Below is a list of fruits, broken down according to their glycemic index. List is courtesy of www. thegestationaldiabetic.com

2. THE NUGGET

Yocheved and her daughter Miriam, are referred to as Shifra and Pua in the Torah. Pharaoh commanded them to kill every newborn baby boy. Despite the danger, Yocheved and Miriam disregarded his order. Instead, they actively kept the baby boys alive. In this merit, the Kohanim and Leviyim came from Yocheved (and the Davidic line of royalty came from Miriam).

1. LIFE STORY SNIPPET

Yocheved, the daughter of Levi, married Amram, her nephew, and had three famous children who became great Neviim: Miriam, Aharon, and Moshe. At age 130, after having her first two children, she gave birth to Moshe, whom she saved from death by hiding him in the Nile River.

3. BRINGING IT DOWN

Just as Yocheved chose to listen only to Hashem, we can do the same. If someone tells us to act in a way that goes against the Torah we can disregard it. For example, if you are pressured into eating something that isn’t your standard of Kosher, you can stand strong and follow what Hashem wants.

4. FUN FACT

Yocheved was born as Yaakov and his family entered Mitzrayim, and lived long enough to experience Yetzias Mitzrayim. She and her cousin, Serach bas Asher, were the only people who both entered and exited Mitzrayim.

5. QUESTION TO CONSIDER

How can you stay strong in your standards when it comes to Torah & Mitzvos?

Place one plastic plate on top of the maze template. Use a black sharpie to trace the maze onto the plate, then set it aside.

on paper (as shown) and trace onto the different colors of foam. Cut the pieces out.

On the inside of the second plastic plate, create a diamond design with the glue by drawing

Sprinkle the different color sands on the glue until it is fully covered. Shake off the excess sand and let the glue dry.

Glue the baby to one side of one of the magnets. backing to match.

Glue the house on the top plate at the end point of your maze. Let dry. Staple the two plates together, and you’re finished!

SCIENCE UNCOVERED

Use the magnets to help the baby find a house to hide in!

Magnets are surrounded by an invisible force called a magnetic field that can either push away or pull in. Every magnet has two ends, called the north pole and the south pole. Opposite poles – north and south – are pulled toward each other and stick together. The magnetic force is so strong that even if something thin is between two magnets, like a plate or sand, they still stick together!
