RECAP OF CHAPTER 60: Still feeling shocked, confused, and distressed, Naomi sits down to figure out a message that she can write to Binyamin, to explain what happened.

In Vienna, Dena tells Bentzy that the reason she made him hang up on the newspaper editor, or whoever it was, was because she intuitively felt that he should not know about the female journalist who had called her. That woman seemed to be mentally ill, by the fact that she thought the Nazis were still in power, and Dena decides that if she’ll call again, she’ll try to understand the whole situation better.

CHAPTER SIXTY ONE

The note in the bottle of cleaning soap:

I spoke to someone; she is Jewish. And not only her… The conversation was very strange. I’m very confused. Everything we knew…may not be true.

It’s not clear who rules. Those who we thought did—have long been defeated. Including the leaders and the army.

Maybe they control only these areas nearby? I didn’t quite understand.

Another person listened with me for some of the time, and she’s also confused.

We need to be very careful. Even though I wrote this note in gematria, destroy it right away, and don’t speak about this subject for a few days.

Also, until we see that they are not looking for us, I don’t want to meet.

“Where was this hidden?” Binyamin asked his mother, who had taken a break to run home at exactly the same time as his personal break. He folded the note, keeping a neutral expression on his face. “Is this what was in the bottle Naomi brought here this morning?”

He glanced outside through a slit in the window shade. The area in front of their house was empty. His break would be over in a few minutes, and he’d go back to the factory.

“Yes,” Rechel whispered. “I didn’t understand why she brought it, and why she was practically screaming at the top of her lungs that she’d bought me what I’d asked for…but alright.”

“Worst-case, we’ll say that by accident, it all spilled. That’s not what is bothering me,” his mother said. “I’m more worried about what she wrote to you here. I knew you’d come to check it, so I came also.”

“How did you manage that?”

“With Katarina? I’m on cleaning duty today; I don’t have to be there when they are sewing and embroidering.”

She pointed to the note. “Nu?”

“The truth is, it’s not very clear to me,” Binyamin said slowly.

“What, you weren’t able to decipher Naomi’s gematria?”

“That I was able to do, but I don’t really understand what she is saying.”

“Something worrisome?” Her forehead creased.

“Worrisome? No, not at all. I’d call it strange.”

The creases grew deeper. “What’s strange?”

“Mamme, I prefer not to talk about things that I don’t understand,” Binyamin replied gently. “Is it okay if we wait until I ask her clearly what she meant to say?”

“Does she even want to talk about it?”

He smiled, knowing when he was defeated. “I guess not. At least not yet.”

“Of course. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have taken the risk of sending this note. Just imagine if one of the Wangels would have demanded that she open the bottle that she was carrying early this morning.”

“Oy, Mamme, those things don’t happen anymore. It’s been years since they stopped people randomly to check what they’re carrying.”

“But if they see something suspicious?”

“What can be suspicious about someone bringing some soap to her mother?!”

“She was carrying the empty bottle too easily. I think she did try to make it look like it was full, but I saw that she was walking too fast, and it swung a bit in her hand.”

“Did anyone see her?”

“I don’t think so, baruch Hashem. Anyway, for now she’s sufficed with sending this note, eh?”

“Apparently. She wrote not to talk to her about anything for the next few days,” Binyamin admitted.

“It’s very good that she’s being cautious. So what are you going to do with that note now?”

“I’m going to destroy it.”

“How?”

“I’ll tear it into tiny pieces, and slowly we’ll get rid of them.” Rechel nodded. “So… what did she write?”

Binyamin took a deep breath. “That she had a very strange conversation with someone.”

Rechel sighed. “Okay,” she said. “I have to go back to the sewing room now. Are you also leaving the house?”

“Yes. I finish early this evening; we have to take care of everything for the matzos tonight.”

“Oh, I almost forgot about that!” A smile lit up her tired face. “Lots of hatzlachah with it, and may we have kosher and mehudar matzos for Yom Tov!”

“Amen!”

“When will you be finished?”

“Tonight we’ll take the oven out of the storage room, we’ll draw the water, and before dawn, we’ll start to bake, b’ezras Hashem. We hope to finish it all by ten, before it gets too warm out.”

“Will Naomi come with the children to the baking?”

He frowned. “Honestly, I have no idea. I totally forgot about the kids coming to watch… Also, I don’t know what they will do this year, when the class is split so clearly between us and the Reformers.”

“They also eat matzos; why should they care if their children see the baking?”

He smiled. “I don’t mind if they all come. It’s a nice experience, regardless.”

Indeed, that evening, the children came to watch the water, the mayim shelanu, being drawn, together with the adults. But the next day, the day of the baking, wasn’t quite as successful, and the “nice experience” was not exactly very nice.

Naomi realized it from far, as they approached the field where the oven was standing. It had been built by the skilled hands of Reb Dovid Kush,

zichrono l’vrachah, forty-three years ago. But today, the familiar calls of matzah bakers sounded very different from that of other years.

“They are screaming there!” Dror Elkovitz said, as he left his partner in the line and came over to Naomi. Rivku stopped and squinted. “What’s going on over there, Naomi?” Naomi, too, squinted in the blinding light of the rising sun. “It sounds like an argument,” she said. “I hope it’s not anything worse.”

“Who is there?” Katy shouted. “I can’t see! Oh, it’s your brother, Naomi, and the rav, and a few other frum men… But there is one Reformer there; it’s Ernie, Leo Sherer’s nephew!”

“My sister-in-law’s father,” Rivku murmured. “I think he always comes to the baking. He’s in charge on our behalf.”

“And there is Leo Sherer himself!” Katy crowed. “What’s he doing, running over there…?”

“It’s my grandfather!” Dror boasted proudly, going back into the line and taking his partner, Chaim Landau’s, hand.

“You’re not going to do whatever you want here!” the vaunted grandfather proclaimed loudly.

The proud grandson’s forehead creased with discomfort.

“Why is your grandfather screaming at my father?” Chaim asked his partner, which did nothing to boost Dror’s already flagging mood.

Naomi intervened quickly. “Quiet, Chaim! Even if the adults are arguing about something, it doesn’t mean the children should get involved.”

“But we want to see the matzah baking!” Zuska cried, folding her arms. “What is going on?”

Naomi exchanged glances with Rivku for a moment. Then she left the group and marched forward to her brother Binyamin. “What’s happening, Binyamin?”

“We had some delays with the baking,” Binyamin said. “We had to clean the oven, because mice had taken up residence in it over the year. So we ended up coming too late to the baking.”

KRIAH TUTORING

“What do you mean, ‘too late’?”

“We don’t bake at this hour outside, under the sun,” he said. “We are baking!” someone shouted from behind him; it was Ernie. “And don’t you burden us with your chumros! We’ll finish the baking now, and then you can do whatever you want!”

Naomi realized that it wasn’t a good time for the children to observe the baking. “Kids, we’re going back to the classroom now,” she said to her group, raising a calming hand to ward off the grumblings of dissent that rippled through the pairs of children. Until now, they’d stood in obedient silence, while waiting for the signal that they could go into the field. “There were mice in the oven, and the cleaning took much longer, so now everything is delayed.”

The babble of voices behind her made her hurry even faster back to the classroom. Rivku didn’t say a word either, and Naomi was pleased about that. She had no idea if she’d grasped all the details of the issue, but in any case, she had no interest in making this personal between her and Rivku. The men would work it out, b’ezras Hashem, and she and Rivku would just be busy with what they were supposed to be busy with.

“In the end, our people took their sacks of flour and left. The Reformers stayed to bake, and tomorrow, we will bake our matzos,” Aryeh said, as he wiped down the chairs with a wet rag. He stopped to scrape at a sticky stain. There was a pleasant scent of cleaning in the air of the small house.

“And that’s it?”

“It wasn’t so simple. Wangel also came and got involved. Today the bakers got a special permit to be late to work, but tomorrow they won’t. They’ll have to deduct the time from their personal accounts.”

“I hope this doesn’t mar the atmosphere in the whole camp,” Naomi said as she scrubbed a metal pot. “The status quo was pretty good

lately…”

“Yes, it really was,” he agreed. “Is this pot clean enough?” she asked. Aryeh put down his rag and came to run a finger over the pot. “It’s perfect—ready for kashering,” he said.

“I wanted to ask you if it’s okay for me to participate in the baking tomorrow as well. The more hands there are, the faster we can do it.”

“Oh, okay,” she replied quietly. “Will it take a lot off your salary?”

“The regular fine. Something we can handle, b’ezras Hashem. But putting that aside, do you know what I was thinking during this whole argument, Naomi? That maybe for the status quo between us and the Reformers, what happened today wasn’t great, and I sure hope that the matzos they baked today are kosher enough, even if they are not mehudar. But for us, the ruckus was actually very good.”

“What do you mean? In what way was the ruckus very good for us?”

“Well, there’s a lot of agitation in the camp right now; there’s tension; everyone’s talking everywhere I think that if we sit down with Binyamin this evening, and you tell him what you heard on the phone call, it won’t be obvious or unusual to anyone.”

“What’s so urgent that it has to be this evening?”

“Have mercy on the poor boy, Naomi,” Aryeh said with a smile. “He is so uptight, he doesn’t know what to do with himself.”

“And you think that the jumble of information that I can give him will calm him down? I’m afraid just the opposite will happen.”

“And then what?”

“I’m afraid he’ll do something hasty that will put us all in danger.”

“He won’t.” Aryeh was firm. “Binyamin is young and fiery, but he won’t do anything foolish.”

“Okay, so find a time and a good excuse. For my part, he can come and help us get ready for Yom Tov. I think anyone who hears about such help will accept it for what it is.”

Recap: Chayala has a procedure done and is in critical condition.

Chayala’s condition remains the same over the next few days. She is attached to a ventilator and completely lost any progress she had made up until now. Her situation is precarious, and I am an emotional mess. What will be with my precious baby?

Sometimes I bury myself in my siddur and Tehillim, feeling like Hashem is right here by my side. Other times, I feel numb and disconnected. Even when I daven, I am not sure what to ask for. Asking for Chayala to get better is asking for an open neis. She is on the verge of death. I ask for it anyway, though, along with the strength to handle whatever is in store for us, and that everything should work out for the best.

Sometimes I lose myself in a puddle of helplessness and despair. I just sit by Chayala’s side and watch her, attached to so many wires and machines, her tiny body being pumped and kept alive by them. I want so badly for her to just get better, continue on the upward spiral she was on before, slowly progressing and thriving at her own pace, reaching milestones most babies are born with. But instead, I stare at her face, so white that it is hard to tell she is still alive. I can almost feel the presence of the malach hamaves, hovering over her, waiting for the right moment to snatch her away from me, from us, from this world. I want to just stand up and shoo him away, but that is not something in my power to do. Suddenly, the machines start beeping, shrieking in my ears, and I am pushed aside by a swarm of doctors. Chayala’s oxygen is dropping! I stand at the side for a few

minutes, holding my breath, until she is finally stabilized. I breath a sigh of relief. However, I quickly realize that it is too soon to be relieved. The same scare occurs again and again over the next few days.

Each time Chayala’s numbers drop, I try to prepare myself, mentally and emotionally, for the end. The problem is that it happens many, many times in the span of a few days. I am so grateful that she is still hanging in there, so appreciative of each extra moment with my precious daughter. The emotional see-saw is hard to handle, though. The up and down, thinking this time it is the end, then breathing a sigh of relief as she gets through it and is still alive, only for it to happen again a few hours later.

Chayala also needs a shot in her leg, the one that had had a blood clot, every day. I had to get that same shot once also, after she was born, and it was extremely painful. It is hard for me to contemplate Chayala getting that shot every single day! She is so weak and helpless, and I wish I could shield her from this extra pain, but there is nothing I can do about it.

Until now, the hospital only allowed me and my husband, the baby’s parents, to visit her. Anyone else, including my parents, Chayala’s grandparents, were not allowed in. Now, I realize that this may be the last chance for my parents to see Chayala while she is still alive. If we wait any longer, they

may lose that opportunity forever. I explain this to the hospital staff, and they grudgingly acquiesce to my request.

I try to prepare my parents for the sight, but they are still scared out of their wits at seeing her. My mother turns almost as white as Chayala and cannot even get any words out of her mouth right away.

My father whispers, “Are you sure she is still alive? She looks…like she’s not.”

They are both horrified at Chayala’s appearance. I remind my parents that Chayala was doing much better, and looked alive and healthy, until a few days ago. It is disappointing, though, that they are only getting to see her in real for the first time when she looks like this. I had imagined that we would soon be bringing Chayala home, and my parents would get to see her free of the incubator and surrounding apparatuses, and even be able to hold her. The contrast of that dream to the scene now is like a sharp black stain on a lacy white tablecloth.

We spend that Shabbos at home, as we usually do. On Shabbos afternoon, I walk over to the Hatzalah garage and ask the goy there if he can call the hospital to find out if there are any changes in Chayala’s condition. He gets through, speaks to the doctor, then delivers an update.

“Your baby’s lungs have collapsed.”

Mothers, dear. I know, I know…There is nothing more humbling than your playroom. Yet, there is nothing more beautiful, nor is there a greater blessing than the messes that children make. So, take a moment to send up thanks for all that goodness. With that being said, we can try to make a system that works for your playroom. Ever left the house to PTA thinking this should only take a half hour, only to find yourself returning four hours later (hairs on your wig standing straight up)? To me, that’s how playroom projects usually turn out. At first glance, it’s like what’s the big deal to organize this playroom? Just straighten the books and games and presto you’re done! But then reality hits and the chills settle in. I find myself sorting through teeny tiny pieces of Lego mixed nicely with some Playmobil and a bit of MagnaTiles and Playstix too for added flavor. This is the stuff nightmares are made of. But don’t get discouraged, follow me step by step as we organize the playroom. Just be sure to book a good massage for your back afterwards.

PLAYROOM PERFECTION, NO LONGER AN OXYMORON

Meet the lively Family M. consisting of 7 adorable red headed children. They greeted me with exclamations ranging from “You’ve come to the right place” to “You have no idea what you got yourself into”. That should have been my cue to run but I didn’t. I sure am glad that I didn’t because the satisfaction that comes along with a challenging project is unrivaled.

THE PROBLEM (AND SOLUTION) OF THIS SEEMINGLY IMPOSSIBLE SPACE:

I will usually begin by asking my clients what works for them in a space and what doesn’t. However, in this case I got my answer at first glance. The playroom closets were built awfully deep. The likes of which I have never encountered before. The problem with deep spaces is that the back turns into a no- man’s land. You have no idea what might be lurking in the very back of such a closet.

Now, I promised you a solution, didn’t I? Very simple. We settled on a rotation system. This means that the toys that are currently popular with the Family M. kids, were placed in the front and the rest were placed in the back. After a while, Mrs. M. can choose to rotate the toys so that the children won’t get bored of them. This was done to the books and games as well.

THE PROCESS:

1. Empty - we emptied out the two closets entirely. The floor turned into a kaleidoscope of colors. Not so pretty when you know its your job to clean it.

2. Purge - get rid of all things that no longer serve a purpose. Dump those scary looking dolls with missing eyes and limbs. C’mon who are you looking to traumatize anyways? Toss away the car with no wheels or the wheels with no car. Get my drift?

3. Categories - Let’s get into this:

There are four categories that will be found in a playroom:

A. Games/Puzzles

B. Books

C. Toys

D. Crafting

Place each category in a separate closet or on a separate shelf.

4. Containerize- is that even a word?!

Back to our categories:

A. Games/Puzzles- you can either place them vertically, horizontally, or empty them into what has become popularly known as game boxes. However, that is a pricier option.

In the picture, you may notice that I chose to place the games vertically in order of colors. I happen to love how sharp it came out!

In contrast, the puzzles were stacked horizontally. That was simply because the boxes were already coming apart and I felt that this would be the safest solution.

B. Books can be placed in separate categories or skip it! In this case, Family M. carries entire series of books so I separated them. I used shelf dividers to separate book categories. You may also use magazine holders or any other kind of holder.

C. Toys - Ask any experienced mom and she will tell you that she wishes she would have stocked up on TONS of her kid’s favorite toys rather than to buy every random toy that hit the market. Kids favorites include (say it along with me!) MagnaTiles, Playmobil, Legos, and Klicks. Some things just never change!

D. Crafting - Okaaaaay. So here is where things get sticky. So first of all, just to get this off my chest, teachers dear, how about substituting the glitter in your projects?! I’ll pass on the privilege of having silver glitter in my cutlets.

Onwards, now!! Here is what I prefer to do with crafts, coloring papers, etc. I like to place a couple of magazine files, or even better multipurpose bins lined up on a shelf. I divide them by kid’s crafts, coloring papers, looseleaf papers, coloring books etc.

For supplies, simply separate them into any simple containers. (I prefer the Organizing Warehouse accessory bin- sold in Wilhelms)

5. Labeling - When you are finally at peace with yourself and your playroom is looking awesome, go ahead and label!!

Now don’t forget to book that massage (and tranquilizer, if you wish!)

BBQ HASSELBACK SALAMI

This simple, yet delicious version of a hasselback salami is perfect to serve at room temperature. This also freezes beautifully. You can freeze before baking or after.

Ingredients:

2 12oz salami

1/4 cup brown sugar

1/3 cup BBQ sauce

1/3 cup apricot jelly

1 Tbsp smoked paprika

1 Tbsp mustard

1 tsp garlic powder

1 tsp black pepper

1 tsp kosher salt

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 350°.

2. Cut both salamis into thin slices, without cutting through the bottom. Place in a small baking pan.

3. Combine rest of ingredients in a bowl. Pour over sliced salami. Bake for 1 hour.

CRUNCHY CABBAGE SALAD

This cabbage salad is the perfect crunchy salad to top your table with. This salad stays crunchy for a while, making it a perfect party salad.

Ingredients:

1/2 bag purple cabbage

1/2 bag green cabbage

1 bunch scallions, thinly sliced

3 packages pastrami, diced & baked for 20 minutes on 350°

1 bag shredded carrots

2 mini cucumbers, diced

1 pack ramen, slightly crushed

1 1/2- 2 cup cooked orzo

Dressing Ingredients:

1 Tbsp toasted sesame oil

2 Tbsp silan or honey

1 tsp soy sauce

1 tsp salt

1 tsp garlic

1/2 cup olive oil

2 Tbsp mayo

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 400°. Place diced onions in a small baking pan. Bake for 30 minutes, stirring halfway.

2. Combine all salad ingredients in a large bowl.

3. Combine dressing ingredients in a small bowl.

4. Dress and enjoy.

ANGEL HAIR PASTA

This elevated version of the classic angel hair pasta salad is my go to side dish for all occasions. It’s delicious at room temperature and can be made in advance.

Ingredients:

1/2 cup soy sauce

1/3 cup brown sugar

1/2 cup sesame oil

5 garlic cubes

1-2 ginger cubes

24 oz mini broccoli, defrosted

1 pack angel hair

1 stalk scallion, sliced, for topping

Sesame seeds, for topping

Directions:

1. Bring a large pot of salted water to boil. Add broccoli and pasta. Cook for 8-10 minutes.

2. Drain in a strainer.

3. Add remaining ingredients to the pot. Put cooked broccoli and angel hair back in the pot. Mix gently with a spatula until combined.

A delightful burst of flavor in every bite, these pinwheels are sure to be a hit. With their savory meat filling and flaky puff pastry, you'll want to keep going back for "just one more."

INGREDIENTS

2 sheets puff pastry dough

1½ lbs ground beef

1 medium onion, diced

2 cloves garlic, minced

2 tsp Lieber’s oil

1 (8 oz) can Lieber’s sliced mushrooms, drained

1 tsp Lieber’s salt

½ tsp Lieber’s black pepper

½ tsp Lieber’s cumin

1 tsp Lieber’s paprika

½ tsp Lieber’s onion powder

½ tsp Lieber’s garlic powder

½ cup + 2 Tbsp Lieber’s creamy Dijon mustard

½ cup Lieber’s spicy mayo

DIRECTIONS

1. In a pan over medium heat, add the oil and sauté the onions, mushrooms, and garlic for about 7-9 minutes.

2. Add the salt, pepper, and remaining spices. Cook for about 1 minute, until fragrant.

3. Add the ground beef, breaking it up with a spoon or potato masher. Brown the meat for 10-15 minutes, until cooked through.

4. Roll out both puff pastry sheets. Spread a layer of Dijon mustard on each sheet.

5. Divide the meat mixture between the two pastry sheets. Roll each sheet into a jelly roll shape and slice into pinwheels.

6. Place the pinwheels on a lined baking sheet. Bake at 350°F for 25-30 minutes, until the pastry is golden brown.

QI am very concerned about my 9-year-old grandson's eating habits. He has restricted himself to eating only cold cereal, dry bread, omelets, baked goods, and candy. When he sits down to a meal, he won't even look at his food and seems to have no appetite at all. If my daughter offers him meat, chicken, fish, fruits, or vegetables (raw or cooked) he makes himself gag and runs away from the table. Sometimes she is able to force a spoonful of meat down his throat but he almost vomits it back up and that tiny bit of meat comprises his entire dinner. He has been eating this way all his life, he is painfully thin, but he seems healthy and is active. Should he see a therapist to help him overcome his aversion to most foods or should he be left alone to eat those few foods that he likes?

AWhen a child exhibits a highly restrictive eating pattern, as seen with your 9-year-old grandson, it can be deeply concerning for both parents and grandparents. Watching a child refuse nutritious foods and show distress at mealtimes can leave one feeling helpless. However, it’s important to approach the situation with understanding, compassion, and the right tools to support healthier eating habits.

One key factor that may be at play is a sensory processing issue. Children with sensory sensitivities often react strongly to certain textures, smells, tastes, or appearances of food. What might seem like simple pickiness could actually be a physical and psychological response to overwhelming sensations. For these children, foods like meat, vegetables, or fruits can feel uncomfortable in their mouth, leading to gagging or running away from the table.

This isn’t a matter of stubbornness—it’s a genuine challenge that can be distressing for the child. Sensory food aversions can limit a child's diet to foods that feel "safe"—often those with predictable textures, such as dry bread, cold cereal, and baked goods.

In situations where sensory issues are suspected, working with a feeding therapist—often an occupational therapist with specialized training— can make a significant difference. Feeding therapy involves gradually exposing the child to new foods in a non-threatening, supportive environment. The therapist works on desensitization techniques to help the child become more comfortable with different textures, tastes, and smells. Therapy sessions may include play-based strategies, texture exploration, and bite-sized introductions to new foods. Over time, this approach can help expand the child’s diet and make mealtimes less stressful for everyone involved.

At home, positive reinforcement strategies can encourage gradual progress. A simple chart system can help track small victories, like touching a new food, smelling it, or trying a tiny bite. Each accomplishment can earn the child a reward, whether it’s a sticker, extra playtime, or a small privilege.

The goal is to celebrate effort, not just success. The focus should be on making the experience positive, rather than using force or pressure, which can increase anxiety around food.

Also, children learn by example, often through a process akin to osmosis. When family members model healthy eating behaviors—enjoying a variety of foods without pressure—it can subtly encourage the child to become curious about new foods. Eating together as a family, talking about flavors and textures in a relaxed way, and showing enjoyment can make mealtimes more inviting.

Avoid drawing attention to the child’s restricted eating during meals. Instead, create a low-pressure environment where trying new foods feels safe and optional.

You asked if you should seek professional help; given the severity of your grandson’s food aversions and his physical thinness, consulting with a therapist who specializes in feeding issues would be a valuable step. While it’s encouraging that he seems healthy and active, a specialist can help ensure his nutritional needs are being met and work with him to expand his diet in a supportive and structured way.

In addition, a pediatrician or dietitian can provide guidance on nutritional supplements if necessary to ensure he receives the essential nutrients he needs while therapy progresses. Kudos to you for being such an in-tune and caring bubby!

Divrei Hayamim states that Mered married Basya. The Gemara explains that Mered was actually Kalev ben Yefuneh, but he was given this name because it derives from the Hebrew word for “rebel.” He earned this title for standing against the plan of the other Meraglim (spies). Similarly, he married Basya because she too rebelled, defying her father’s wicked decree.

4. FUN FACT

Basya means “daughter of Hashem.” Hashem said to her, “Moshe was not your son, but you called him your son. You too, are not my daughter but I call you My daughter.”

1. LIFE STORY SNIPPET

Basya (also known as Batya), daughter of King Pharaoh, went to the Nile River to purify herself from her father’s idols, accompanied by several maids. She saw baby Moshe in a basket in the river and wanted to save him. Her maids protested, insisting that a king’s decree must be followed, especially as the daughter of the king. When they persisted, the angel Gavriel came and beat them to the ground, causing their deaths. At that moment, Basya’s arm miraculously extended, allowing her to reach Moshe and rescue him.

3. BRINGING IT DOWN

Like Basya, you have the power to stand up against wrongdoing and choose what is right, even if you are in the minority. For instance, if you find yourself among people speaking Lashon Hara, you can refuse to participate and simply walk away.

5. QUESTION TO CONSIDER

How can you choose to do what is right even if others are not?

Measure 2.5 inches down the landscape side and draw a line through the canvas for the sky. Then from the corner of the line you drew, draw a diagonal line to the bottom of the canvas corner on the longer half of the canvas.

Add some clouds by drawing circles that touch each other.

Mix turquoise, blue and brown to create a dark blue color. Using a sponge brush, paint the larger half of the canvas, leaving the area around the diagonal line untouched. Let it dry.

Paint the river by following the diagonal direction loosely, painting little squiggles of blue turquoise and white in a wavy line down the paper.

Finally, add Moshe’s basket. To form the basket, draw a half-circle, then a quarter-circle on top. To create a floating effect, paint small waves around it.
